Book Description
Betty Berzon, renowned psychotherapist and author of the bestselling book Permanent Partners, tells her own incredible story here. Berzon’s journey from psychiatric patient on suicide watch—her wrists tethered to the bed rails in a locked hospital ward—to her present role as a groundbreaking therapist and gay pioneer makes for purely compelling reading.
Berzon is recognized today as a trailblazing co-founder of a number of important lesbian and gay organizations and one of the first therapists to focus on means of developing healthy gay relationships and overcoming homophobia. Her sometimes bumpy road to success never fails to fascinate. Along the way she encounters such luminaries as Anaïs Nin, Eleanor Roosevelt, the Sitwells, Evelyn Hooker, and Paul Monette. Her recollections here provide a collective portrait of her fellow pioneers and a stirring lesson in twentieth-century history.
It is, however, the intimate story of Berzon’s own private passage toward self-discovery—from mental breakdown and suicide attempts, through hospitalization, eventual triumphant recovery, and her own coming out as an open lesbian at the age of forty—that makes this memoir an urgent, insightful, and deeply emotional testament to human survival.
Customer Reviews:
Surviving Madness: A Therapist's Own Story.......2006-08-22
A very compelling story of a top Psychotherapist who was also a deeply closted lesbian for the 1st half of her life and a gay activist in the 2nd half. Ms. Berzon opens her heart to the reader as she shares her joys and her sufferings. She is also an excellent writer and for readers who would like to become writers, she offers some valuable insight.
what an amazing journey!.......2005-10-29
Difficult to imagine that this revered guru of same-sex relationships was for many years the victim of her own internalized homophobia. The highs and lows of Berzon's life are vividly recounted, punctuated with names of friends like Anais Nin, Evelyn Hooker, Paul Monette, and Michael Murphy. It's no spoiler to say that she ultimately found happiness in a long-term relationship, making her tale that much more inspiring. Highly recommended.
Opening Your Soul.......2002-08-28
An unbelievable journey that shows courage, an innate ability to survive, and a strength of character we all wish we could emulate. I know Surviving Madness was written with tears, because I shed them in so many parts of her story.
Once I started reading the book I didn't stop till I had finished. What greater review can you give....

Book Description
A fascinating read for non-medical layman and allied health field professionals, this unique book on neuroscience goes beyond discussions on the morphology and physiology of the brain by presenting the central nervous system as what it is: not only a group of neurons and lobes, but an extremely complex, integrated system responsible for an extraordinarily wide scope of functions. "Holistic" in approach, it integrates data from the realms of basic sciences, psychology, psychiatry, and neurology - covering a significant amount of updated subject matter plus material rarely found in standard neuroanatomy and neurophysiology texts - such as drug abuse, nutrition, brain plasticity, dreaming, consciousness, and aggression. Presents a witty, conversational and captivating narrative, interjecting discussions of complex concepts with humor, anecdotes, philosophical discussions and clinical case studies. For professionals in such allied health fields as nursing, social work, psychology, and the rehabilitation disciplines, including physical, occupational, recreational and speech and language therapies.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT BOOK!.......2000-01-17
It's the best book i've ever read about neurology. No doubt if you are interested in this topic. It has a very dinamic vocabulary and easy understanding. Also i want to say that this doctor is very important in Argentina. I recomend this book!
Facinating - absolutly facinating.......1999-11-01
I am a layman without any knowledge of the dynamics of the brain. I just couldn't put the book down. It was slow reading but well worth it. I look at life in a very different way.

Book Description
What produces emotions? Why do we have emotions? How do we have emotions? Why do emotional states feel like something? This book seeks explanations of emotion by considering these questions. Emotion continues to be a topic of enormous scientific interest. This new book, a successor to 'The Brain and Emotion', (OUP, 1998), describes the nature, functions, and brain mechanisms that underlie both emotion and motivation. 'Emotion Explained' goes beyond examining brain mechanisms of emotion, by proposing a theory of what emotions are, and an evolutionary, Darwinian, theory of the adaptive value of emotion. It also shows that there is a clear relationship between motivation and emotion. The book also examines how cognitive states can modulate emotions, and in turn, how emotions can influence cognitive states. It considers the role of sexual selection in the evolution of affective behaviour. It also examines emotion and decision making, with links to the burgeoning field of neuroeconomics. The book is also unique in considering emotion at several levels - the neurophysiological, neuroimaging, neuropsychological, behavioural, and computational neuroscience levels.
Customer Reviews:
Deathly Boring.......2007-04-21
This text was used for a 400 level affective neuroscience course, and has been the most complicated and difficult read I've had yet in my neuroscience courses. Dr. Rolls relies extensively on his own research and publications for references. His interpretations of emotions in regards to positive and negative conductance is decidedly his own, as others in the field (Panksepp among others) go nowhere near his theories. I had to purchase two other texts for this course to get through it, and received an A for my efforts. The prof went stray from his usual excellent selection for textbooks for this 'latest' edition of the author's career endeavours.

Book Description
This book explains why complex systems research is important in understanding the structure, function and dynamics of complex natural and social phenomena. It illuminates how complex collective behavior emerges from the parts of a system, due to the interaction between the system and its environment. You will learn the basic concepts and methods of complex system research. It is shown that very different complex phenomena of nature and society can be analyzed and understood by nonlinear dynamics since many systems of very different fields, such as physics, chemistry, biology, economics, psychology and sociology etc. have similar architecture. “Complexity Explained” is not highly technical and mathematical, but teaches and uses the basic mathematical notions of dynamical system theory making the book useful for students of science majors and graduate courses, but it should be readable for a more general audience; actually for those, who ask: What complex systems really are?

This is absolutely the best book on the subject of the human mind that I have ever seen. There are lots of pictures and plenty of different categories of interesting mind phenomena. This is not a reference or text book (thank goodness) but an owner's manual, as the editor says, and is fantastic for learning all about the latest findings about the mind or just casual browsing. You will love this book!

Book Description
Medical researchers have found that a high-fat, high-sugar diet, combined with environmental pollutants and stress, can lead to a buildup of toxins in the body collectively known as chronic degenerative disease. Here holistic physician Gabriel Cousens provides a dietary regimen that may help reverse this process by introducing whole, natural, organic, and raw foods into the diet. These restorative “live” foods can reverse chronic disease and bring back health and vitality. This eclectic cookbook shares 250 delicious vegan recipes from chefs at the Tree of Life Cafe. Dishes include Avocado Salad with Rosemary, Green Dragon Broccoli, Raw-violis, Lavender Milk, and Carob Coconut Cream Eclairs. International entrees, juices, and aromatherapeutic remedies are also featured.
Customer Reviews:
Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine.......2007-10-06
Fabulous for your library or as a gift. Dr. Cousens has compiled all the data you need for optimal health and diet in the raw world. He explains how poor diet can affect your body. He adds pictures while explaining. I took a highlighter and highlighted facts I never want to forget. He has loads of recipes for all phases whether you are a beginner or looking to enhance your diet. This book will be around for a long time and worth so much more than he is charging.
One of the Best on Raw Foods.......2007-09-11
This book, along with the LifeFood Recipe Book by the Judds, are my current bibles on raw foods. I think this book is better researched and more scientific than the LifeFood book, but I use recipes from both all the time. The one thing I'm not really sure about is the temperature for dehydrating raw foods. The LifeFood book won't allow anything dried at a temperature over 118 degrees, but this book, as well as the manufacturer of the Excalibur Dehydrator, which is supposed to be the best, say you can start with a higher temperature for several hours and then reduce it. Have tried both ways, I prefer starting with the higher temp both for the texture of the food as well as the reduced drying time. Other books I would recommend are: The Raw Food Detox Diet by Rose, Green for Life by Boutenko and Nourishing Traditions by Fallon. Although Nourishing Traditions is not a book about raw foods only, it is about natural foods and does have some raw food recipes as well as a wealth of information about food that I've never seen anywhere else. It's well worth having in your library if you are seriously concerned about the foods you eat or you don't intend to eat totally raw.
I've had it one day and it's already dog-eared.......2007-06-15
I own 11 raw food recipe books and this is the first one where I was folding down the corner of practially every recipe page to flag it. Finally a recipe book that doesn't have page after page of sweet fruit salads, smoothies, soups and sauces. This is savory recipe after savory recipe with a LOT of dehydrating involved. Apparently G. Cousen's view is now that you should start out dehydrating wet foods at 145 degrees for two hours and then knock it down to 115 in order to get the food out of the dehydrator faster and not encourage bacterial overgrowth on your food. It still seems inconclusive on how this really effects the enzymes. For the next book possibly? Oh, and the desserts look really good, too. Lots of nuts here, no cashews or maple syrup. Two things I overuse and have been wanting to remove from my diet. Great buy!
Refreshing.......2007-03-08
I'll be to the point. Lots of good vegan, raw recipes that are relatively simple to make and don't require exotic, difficult to find ingredients. Classified according to glycemic index, helpful to those trying to alkalize their systems. Can't wait to experiment with the large selection of appetizing concoctions in this book. Very much appreciated!
Excellent Book.......2007-02-17
Dr. Cousins has done a phenomenal job of showing how raw foods can transform our health and well being. The recipes are terrific. I use this book at least once a day. This book is a must have if you are going to maintain a raw diet. Love it, love it, love it!

Tasty recipes and beautiful pictures.......2004-11-19
I bought this book in South Africa more or less for the pretty pictures, but it has become my favorite and most used cookbook. As most cookbooks are, this cookbook is broken into sections for different parts of the meal: Soups and Salads, Side dishes, Poultry, Fish, Meat, Sambals and Preserves, Breads and homebakes. It also includes a section on making your own spice mixtures (like garam masala and roasted masala) and basic condiments (like mayonnaise). Favorite recipes among my friends and family include the Cape Brandy Pudding and Chicken biryani. In between each section are descriptions of the different regions of South Africa, replete with crisp and glittering photographs of flora, fauna, and scenery. Rainbow Cuisine it ultimately true to its name: it has a wide variety of recipes, reflecting the wide variety of cultures of South Africa, from Cape Malay to English and from Afrikaner to Ndebele. Although some of the dishes are pretty much impossible to make in the US (Roast loin of kudu, for example), those dishes are in the minority and, other than meats, it uses ingredients that are widely available (though some translation might need to be involved: like naartje = tangerine and sodium bicarbonate = baking soda). The only semi-inconvenient issue the book has is that all of the measurements in the recipes are given in metric units and temperatures are given in Celsius. There is a very useful conversion table in the back of the book, and if you're less forgetful than I am, you should have no problem, but I inevitably forget to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit and then wonder why it takes so long for everything to cook. That said, I love this book. It's perfect as a gift - I take any excuse to buy it for my friends and family (birthdays, holidays, or just because I found it on sale), and everyone who uses it loves it.
