Book Description

Along with barrooms and bordellos, there has hardly been a more male-focused institution in Texas history than the Texas Legislature. Yet the eighty-six women who have served there have made a mark on the institution through the legislation they have passed, much of which addresses their concerns as citizens who have been inadequately represented by male lawmakers. This first complete record of the women of the Texas Legislature places such well-known figures as Kay Bailey Hutchison, Sissy Farenthold, Barbara Jordan, Irma Rangel, Eddie Bernice Johnson, Susan Combs, and Judith Zaffirini in the context of their times and among the women and men with whom they served. Drawing on years of primary research and interviews, Nancy Baker Jones and Ruthe Winegarten offer concise biographies and profiles of all eighty-six women who have served or currently hold office in the Texas Legislature. The biographies describe the women lawmakers' lives, campaign strategies, and legislative successes and defeats. Four introductory essays provide historical and cultural context for the biographies, which are arranged chronologically to give a sense of the passage of time, of relationships among and between women, and of the issues of their eras.

A wonderful reference for introducing one group of strong Texas women. Although there is more to life than politics, we are fortunate these women chose to juggle political balls.

4 out of 5 stars Information Book on Texas Legislature.......2001-09-15

"Capitol Women" describes the history of women in Texas legislative politics followed by biographies of every woman who served in the Texas legislature. This book argues that female legislators have had to decide whether to conform to expectations of a male dominated institution, and thus be underminded by being viewed as less capable as male legislators, or to challenge these norms and thus possibly become outcasts. To overcome preconceptions, some Texas female legislators suggest women should either a.) learn the political system and how things operate or b.) work to change and improve the current political system. Some suggest creating strategies incorporating both elements. Still, even recently, State Sen. Judith Zaffirini was advised by a Lt. Governor that "if she cut her skirt off about six inches and put on some high heels, she could pass anything she wants."
Texas has elected women as Governors. Ironically, the first female Texas Governor, "Ma" Ferguson, wife of previous Governor Jim Ferguson, was elected in 1924 with support from antisuggragists and the active opposition of many women. Some legislators then questioned, since Texas law prevented a married woman from legally signing transactions without her husband's signature, whether she would need her husband's signature to approve legislation transferring state property to the federal government.
Ann Richards was elected Governor along with the largest percentage of female legislators that had existed prior. The book argues that more women in politics can make a difference, as the Richards Era was credited for increased attention to mental retardation facilities, crime victims' rights, protection against stalkers, reducing family violence, increasing child immunization, and other issues championed primarily by female politicians.
Someday, there will be a time when a person's gender is not a significant consideration in politics. Until that time comes, this book is a great chronicle of women in the Texas legislature.

    Book Description

"We traveled this forenoon over the roughest and most desolate piece of ground that was ever made," wrote Amelia Knight during her 1853 wagon train journey to Oregon. Some of the parties who traveled with Knight were propelled by religious motives. Hannah King, an Englishwoman and Mormon convert, was headed for Salt Lake City. Her cultured, introspective diary touches on the feelings of sensitive people bound together in a stressful undertaking. Celinda Hines and Rachel Taylor were Methodists seeking their new Canaan in Oregon. Also Oregon-bound in 1853 were Sarah (Sally) Perkins, whose minimalist record cuts deep, and Eliza Butler Ground and Margaret Butler Smith, sisters who wrote revealing letters after arriving. Going to California in 1854 were Elizabeth Myrick, who wrote a no-nonsense diary, and the teenage Mary Burrell, whose wit and exuberance prevail. Introducing this Bison Books edition are Linda Peavy and Ursula Smith, freelance writers living in Vermont. They collaborated on Women in Waiting: Life on the Home Frontier.

5 out of 5 stars Effective of overland travels.......2004-07-22

Lively, energetic accounts full of grit and substance from the women who migrated west in 1853 and 1854. To mention a few:
Amelia Knight details river fordings; the vast numbers of dead cattle with their ensuing stench; wagons, chains, yokes, etc. strewn along the trail; the wind and sand ("them that eat the most breakfast, eat the most sand"). She gave birth to her eighth child towards journey's end. Writes with much clarity.
Celinda Hines had the attributes of a young naturalist. Her descriptions of scenery, landforms, wildflowers, etc. are most touching. When her father drowned along the Boise River, her final entry for the day was a haunting "wolves howled".
A very religious and optimistic Hannah Tapfield King began the journey "happy, blessed and content". By the time she reached the Fort Laramie area she was feeling dismayed, dejected and weary. Quite understandable. A deep thinker.
This is another excellent book in the Covered Wagon Women series.

As a child, my favorite books (read over and over again) were the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. In so many ways, this series reminds me of how much I enjoyed experiencing their journeys. The covered wagon women series, is of course on an adult level; but in many ways similar to the Little House experience. Although there are certainly hard times upon the "covered wagon women" with unknown disease and death visible all around them, finding safe water and adequate food, the books are so enlightening as the authors of the journals all are so positive and driven to find a new better place along the Oregon trail and out West. How brave they were to leave everything behind to head to a world no one had experienced. For any of you other former Laura Ingalls fans, and for anyone else fascinated about the women of the west, I would very highly recommend this series.

I have acquired the first edition of the book as a gift from my mom. As a Turkish-American, I was surprised by the title, which addresses the Ottoman Empire as Turkey. The reading of the book truly takes me back to the last two decades before the fall of the Ottoman Empire. I strongly recommend the book, since it has successfully painted a picture of Turkish society of 1880s. I am stunned to find so many commonalties between then and now in terms of culture and interaction among individuals. I also appreciate the beautiful and skillful language used in description of those times.
The book is particularly humorous and insightful to an individual such as myself, who is considering a career in foreign service.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Fantastic re-envisioning!!.......2007-10-18

This is a really fantastic book! It's like all of the factions and rules in the star wars canon were mixed up in a salad, and then reassembled. You will definitely be surprised at how things have ended up. The line between good and evil is blurred. This allows Ostrander and Duursema to create some very interesting flaws in character development. Also, the Rule of Two is broken in this era which allow the creative team to come up with some very varied Sith!

Anyone who is a fan of Knights of the Old Republic (games) will really enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars A great beginning to what looks to be a great series.......2007-08-09

One of the best Star Wars comics to come along in years. Recaptures the spirit of the original trilogy very successfully without rehashing the plotline and proves that the series doesn't really need the movie characters to tell stories well (hear that, Del Rey?). Some of what makes it so fun is the way it stirs up the combinations of the archetypes the reader is already familiar with such as Imperial, Rebel, smuggler, Jedi, Sith and puts them together in all-new permutations.

5 out of 5 stars Post-ROTJ haters, read this and buy Legacy.......2007-07-12

"After the death of Emperor Palpatine, the defeated Imperial forces pulled back to Bastion, near the Unknown Regions, and called a truce with the New Republic. The Jedi, under Luke Skywalker, again became agents of peace across the galaxy

That peace was shattered by an invasion of fanatical extra-galactic aliens called the Yuuzhan Vong. These "Far Outsiders" killed trillions and devastated entire worlds, taking Coruscant itself and fracturing the New Republic. A Galactic Alliance of remaining systems, Jedi, and the Imperial Remnant finally defeated the invaders, exiling them to the living planet Zonoma Sekot.

Meanwhile, a new breed of Sith, a legion of them led by Darth Krayt, kept patient watch. Emerging from hiding on the planet Korriban, the Sith formed an alliance with the newly reforged Empire. Together they manufactured an incident that sundered the Galactic Alliance and began a brutal war. The Jedi alone remained to defy the Sith and now they are few.

However, the name SKYWALKER still burns among them--a legacy of hope in a galaxy of darkness . . . "

        4 out of 5 stars A promising beginning.......2007-07-05

"Star Wars Legacy" is a comic-book series beginning 125 years after the events of Return of the Jedi. Cade Skywalker is a Jedi in training, but the elite order of peacekeepers is once again beset by dark forces -- a resurgence of the Sith on one side, no longer restricted only to two, and a growing new Empire on the other.

After Cade sees his father slain in a Sith attack, he foresakes the Jedi and, as he grows older, becomes an aggressive and highly successful bounty hunter. But it's hard to ignore your destiny, particularly when your most famous ancestor has learned how to return from beyond and dispense advice as a glowing spirit.

"Broken," the first volume in the new series, has plenty of action and has built the framework for an interesting storyline. It hasn't grabbed me yet, but I hope to see it develop into something exciting.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A nice read about the beginning of Starfleet........2005-05-12

"Broken Bow" is the novelization of the first episode of the television series "Enterprise" and it is a quite enjoyable read. It is approximately 150 years from now. Mankind has made first contact with the Vulcans, and later a few other intelligent races, but Earthmen are still the "new kids on the block" and humans are just beginning to venture out into the stars in a significant way. Starfleet is very new, and mankind's mentors, the Vulcans, disapprove of these upstart humans getting loose outside of our Solar System.

The novel delves into the politics of the construction of the Enterprise and Starfleet, both of which the Vulcans believe are premature, more than the initial television episode did. I personally find the setting in "Enterprise" to be more interesting and enjoyable than that in either The Original Series or The Next Generation (both of which I very much enjoyed!) simply because it has a wonderful "New Frontier" feeling to it. The new warp technology means that Starfleet has very little knowledge of what lies "out there," the other technology is new and sometimes quirky. The transporter is "safe for biotransport" but no one relishes the idea of riding the darned thing, which I can understand. Most races that Enterprise will encounter are new to mankind, and offer new challenges and opportunities. In this episode, humanity meets up with the Klingons, which is never an easy thing to do!

The prose in the novel is good, and this is a very decent read for fans of "Star Trek" and the "Enterprise" concept.

          4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2004-11-10

Yes, the accuracy of this book can definitely be questioned. Lets be honest, there are contradictions throughout the Star Trek universe but you have to get over that. The key question is whether or not the contradictions are integral to the story --- they are not. This was an entertaining read and a good start to a new series. Could it have been beter -- yes. The encounter with the Klingons was disappointing. The continued conflict between humans and vulcans was a little annoying. But, still fun to read.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent adaptation of a fine episode........2004-05-18

In this book, Diane Carey once again demonstrates what she is capable of when not attempting to show how cute and clever she can be with the language. In many of her earlier works, her writing was almost indecipherable due to a tendancy to try to find new, unusual uses for perfectly good words. More and more, in her recent efforts, she has gotten away from this quirk, and the result has been some truly fine writing; this is one of the best so far. The story itself is not as good as her story in "Day of Honor, Ancient Blood", but that isn't her fault. In this case, she is writing a novelization of an existing episode, and she does a solid, workmanlike job of it. The episode is good, just not as good as the best ideas that Ms. Carey has had on her own. This story is an excellent introduction to the "Enterprise" characters and storyline, and Ms. Carey's treatment of it is very worthwhile reading.

5 out of 5 stars The adventure begins..........2004-04-14

A great story about mankind reaching for the stars. After almost a century of being held back by Vulcan guidance Starfleet's first Warp 5 starship commanded by Capt. Johnathan Archer embarks on a mission to return a wounded Klingon named Klangg to his people. Along the way they run into temporal cold war agents-the Suliban and must try and prevent them from killing Klangg (as he carries valuable information back to the Klingon Empire). Archer must also overcome his distrust of Vulcans and his new Vulcan first officer T'pol. This pre-federation chapter of Star Trek is just as enticing as the other Star Trek series'. Even though the technologies featured (Only Warp 5 capable Engine designed by Archer's dad,no tractor beams on Enterprise,no phasers or photon torpedos) are a bit primitive compared to the other series you get to witness the early Starfleet deep space missions. An excellent story nonetheless and well worth reading or watching.

4 out of 5 stars The Beginning Of Starfleet.......2003-05-11

This novel by veteran Star Trek writer Diane Carey is based upon the first 'Star Trek: Enterprise' episode, Broken Bow. It lays the foundation for the formation of Starfleet, which of course came before 'The United Federation Of Planets', and includes some events leading up to the aquisition of warp technology (this book is more detailed than the television version) including a bit more about Zephran Cochran, the inventor of warp drive on earth. This is really fascinating stuff. The plot and storyline are good, as is character development, required reading for any serious Star Trek fan. This book also goes into some detail concerning the start of Vulcan-Terran cooperation and mutual trust and respect, very interesting coverage here. This is great science fiction on any standard, well worth reading, written in an easy to read, flowing style.

            Book Description

A boy falls from a building during an initiation ordeal and, after years in a coma, dies. His sister confronts four men during their twenty-fifth high school reunion. She suspects that they are responsible for her brother's death, and she has filed a lawsuit against "person or persons unknown" for damages as the result of unlawful death. When the sister is murdered all four become suspects. Then one of them disappears, and the circle narrows. The narrator is contacted anonymously by the murderer. They meet back on the fatal roof. Powerful and disturbing, Weyman Jones' novel Broken Glass tells a moving story of how the past can come back to hurt or heal those who have survived it.

Weyman Jones lives in Long Island, New York.

            5 out of 5 stars Broken Glass.......2005-01-17

Chances are every life, even that of social worker Sam, has something in its growing-up background that shouldn't have happened. This comes back to haunt him in a low-key, believable, sparely-written book that starts with a high school 25th reunion.

There are no cliché characters or predictable plot twists here as we follow the events that occur after high school friends reunite.

The author lulls you with details of Sam's rather mundane life, and then socks you with moments of high drama which are described vividly and skillfully.

Yes, you can put the book down, but you will jolly well pick it up again because you need to know how Sam fares and you certainly need to know who done it.

It is a pleasure to read a book where the telling of the tale never calls attention to itself. Such invisible writing is difficult to do although Weyman Jones makes it look easy.

5 out of 5 stars All The Right Ingredients.......2005-01-04

This tale of young friendship, threatened 25 years after an initiation rite goes tragically wrong, quickly becomes a humdinger of a mystery with all the right ingredients -- trust and perfidy, suspicion and accusation, supposition and logic, violence and murder, with clues strewn along the way which do nothing to spoil the surprise ending. Weyman Jones has strayed somewhat from his roots as the author of young-adult novels -- and has pulled it off. A great read.

            5 out of 5 stars A n intriguiging thriller.......2004-10-29

I've read all three of Jones' books. They get better all the time. I found the characters credible, the pace kept moving, and a lot happened in not too many pages. I was surprised to find that I could imagine this on the stage as well as on the silver screen. It impresses me how completely Jones seems to command each of the different cultures in his stories--Indian, Treasure hunters, and LI suburbia with a social work slant. This was a good length for a mystery story--too many of them are too long these days.

5 out of 5 stars An intriguing crime thriller .......2004-09-11

In Suffolk County, New York twenty-five years ago, a high school junior Freddy fell from the fire escape of the Falcon Nest Hotel during a "club" initiation. Freddy remained in a coma for a few years as his family fell apart in their grief before Freddy finally died.

Over the years though she married and divorced one of them, Freddy's sister Angela suspects four people were involved in the incident though none of them were seemingly impacted by it as her family was. At a high school reunion she informs Michael, Sam, Jock and Hap that she is suing them in the wrongful death of her sibling. Stunned, social worker Sam is further dismayed when Michael's son Mike is caught in a stairwell with an underage client; instead of filing the report he allows history to repeat itself by hiding the truth. However, when someone murders Angela, Sam with the help of his girlfriend, concludes he must face up to his role in the tragedy confronting his three friends.

BROKEN GLASS is an intriguing crime thriller starring a beleaguered protagonist struggling with doing the right thing as for the second time in his life, loyalty to his friends comes in conflict with what he knows he needs to do. The terrific ensemble brings depth then and now, but the conscience and center of the tale is Sam. His dilemmas as a teen and as an adult make for a fine moral thriller, which asks when does one blows the whistle on a friend, family member, etc.

              Book Description

On September 11, 2001, a central critique of missile defence—that it will be futile against the lowest-tech and most likely type of attack against the United States—was brought home with terrible force. Yet the program continues, as it has in one form or another, regardless of political or material conditions, consuming $133 billion over the past fifty years. In a book that combines travelogue and technological assessment, political history and polemic, JoAnn Wypijewski visits some of the places where National Missile Defense lives a real life, where it is tested and researched, and where America's exercise of empire on earth meets its ambitions for space. Across the geography of missile defense—from Huntsville, Alabama, to California's Central Coast, to the cliffs of O'ahu, to Kwajalein atoll in the Marshall Islands—Wypijewski excavates a history of dispossession, of imperial fantasies made real. From the Marshall Islands, she presents pictures of an American suburb serviced by a slum, of some of the world's most sophisticated technology existing offshore from a cholera ward, of a native culture hammered for the sake of a military program that 'works' only to the extent that it keeps itself going. This is a story of Star Wars quite unlike any other. It argues that the system is best understood not through its expense, faulty tests or political machinations, but through its claims on space, in the history and lives of people on earth.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every American.......2005-02-10

While most critiques of the Star Wars missle defense system focus on its outlandish cost overruns and unfeasibility, Wypijewski goes much further, detailing missile defense as colonialist enterprise. While the cost of missile defense is an outlandish burden for the American taxpayer, it is death toll for the Marshall Islanders, who must bear the burden of this fantasy in their lives. We must all read this to see how it has come to pass, and then ask ourselves why such stories don't make the evening news.

                  Book Description

A dittybag was once described to me as a small bag in which WWII sailors used to carry their toilet articles. They also contained a collection of attitudes, values, memories and behavior, which they brought home with them. Likewise, the Vietnam Veteran brought home his dittybag. This one was too often filled with pain too hard to face. PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, was not recognized at that time. But it has had disastrous effects on those vets, as well as their wives and children. The Vietnam War was much different than past wars. A big wall of pain exists for many, who have no idea how to get through it. They have no understanding of why they are feeling (or not feeling) what they are. Although I no longer wish on stars, I do believe in the power of God. If my story can touch just one life, I will feel like what I have been through will have a meaning.
