4 out of 5 stars King of Scouts - the title is an understatement for this man........2007-10-08

Fred Burnham wrote "Taking Chances" and "Scouting on Two Continents" - biographies written from his point of view.

This book/novel fills in some of the holes in the facts of what the modest Fred Burnham didn't include.
The author draws upon information not available until 2000 - a collection of private letters between Burnham and Baden-Powell stored under seal in the Yale Library.

I have read many books about Fred Burnham and that mention Fred Burnham.
(Biographies of Winston Churchill mention Fred Burnham cause Burnham saved Churchill's life during the Boer War in South Africa.)
This book one is a welcome addition to my collection of African Tales.

Burnham's exploits never fail to amaze me.
His attention to detail is complete.
His ability to see detail, while prevailing in the most trying of conditions, are so advanced that mere mortals can only dream of having that level of perception of their environment.
He doesn't seem to have realized the extent of his mental and physical gifts.
Its seems like the complicated information that Burnham collected, processed, interpreted and communicated while scouting came to him as easily as if normal people were checking to see if it was raining.
But it wasn't that simple - he dedicated himself to the study of the details that would keep him alive in lands filled with tribal strife - the American West and South Africa.
In this modern world of instant gratification its hard for today's men & women, outside the elite military units like SEALS, SAS, Delta Force, to understand the importance of the art & craft of true scouting behind enemy lines.

I truly believe that Homer would have included Fred Burnham in the Iliad as a major figure if Burnham had lived in that time... That's how singular and brilliant he was.

3 out of 5 stars Deperately needs an editor.......2007-05-06

It's good, but it was published on-demand by the author and could have used a professional editor to clean it up a bit.

Also, although it's a novel it would have been nice to have an introduction, bibliography, and notes, and generally some more explanation.

Visionary empire-builder, ultimate Kipling hero, the carrier -- for England -- of "the white man's burden," Rhodes in his time was revered in England. Who else had a huge country named after him? His life-long dream was the world federation of states, cessation of wars and world government, under British rule. In the perspective of the turbulent century that passed since, he appears a giant with toppled dreams. This is his story.

Anthony Thomas, a South African exiled in 1977 after he made an anti-apartheid documentary, approached English empire builder Cecil Rhodes (1853-1902) with just the right attitude. Thomas strongly criticized the racially unjust and politically corrupt methods by which Rhodes built the white-dominated states of Southern Africa, but he was also fascinated by the forceful personality that enabled Rhodes to charm, cajole, and finagle his way into wealth and power. Vigorous prose and a propulsive story line do justice to Rhodes's action-packed life, which is also the subject of a Masterpiece Theatre dramatization by Thomas.

1 out of 5 stars Look For Another Biography.......2007-05-30

Cecil Rhodes, claims Antony Thomas, in a torturous attempt at historical comparison, shares the same qualities as Heinrich Himmler because both were taught by Jesuit priests. Really, now. While few people would ascribe any saintly qualities to Rhodes, statements like this do a disservice to serious students of history. As a result, Thomas' book is a mundane recitation of facts punctuated with generalized observations that come from nowhere and seem designed only to astonish.

The drama of Rhodes' life figured prominently in the story of the British Empire. Antony Thomas fails to capture this essence. The outsized historical character Cecil Rhodes deserves a less timid biographer (Robert Massie comes to mind) who understands the man and the majesty of times in which he lived.

5 out of 5 stars Thing or Two..........2004-09-25

Mr. Rhodes knew a thing or two about a thing or two...

4 out of 5 stars Solid study of moral ambiguity.......2003-05-25

Antony Thomas states up front that he is certainly no fan of Cecil Rhodes, and from that statement, the reader might expect to be treated to a real chop job. Instead, one gets a remarkably even-handed treatment of Rhodes. It would be easy simply to characterize Rhodes as evil, but to Thomas' credit, he does not take the easy way out. He is more than prepared to exam what can be best described as Rhodes' moral ambiguity.

I would not call Rhodes amoral in the strictist sense. He knew well enough when he was doing wrong to want to conceal his activities. Nor would I call him a ruthless pragmatist. His devotion to his friends was quite real, and in the case of Neville Pickering's death, Rhodes' all-consuming grief ultimately kept him from purchasing land that he knew was rich in gold. His personal feelings kept him from making a second, utterly massive, fortune in gold. That is hardly the action of pragmatist.

Trying to figure out what made Rhodes tick becomes trickier the more one examines his deeds. Even Thomas is vexed at times at how easily Rhodes moves from one alliance to another, and completely reverses his stands on issues such as native rights. By the time of his death, Rhodes was lionized throughout the British Empire as being in the vanguard of imperialists, but Thomas shows that for most of his career, he was strictly pursuing his own economic and political interests, and did not cloak himself in the gard of British Imperialism until it was absolutely necessary.

Thomas does not only focus on Rhodes. He demonstrates that most of the men that Rhodes dealt with could be, at times, just as morally ambiguous as he. Rhodes knew well that every man has his price, and demonstrated it again and again. Men in positions of power were irreconcilably opposed to Rhodes & his plans, at least until Rhodes made the right offer. The Victorians would had one believe that they were paragons of virtue and rectitude, but reading of Rhodes' dealings with them makes such a claim hardly believable.

At the end of his life, Rhodes began to appreciate that a man's legacy would not be measured in the wealth that he amassed or in the deals that he made. For Rhodes, that realization came too late. Most of his accomplishments are now hardly remembered, and the man himself is remembered now more with scorn and revulsion that awe and respect. Yet Rhodes was a remarkable man. Thomas makes the distinction between being a remarkable man and a great man, and in this finds the true tragedy of Rhodes' life: he had the talents to be a truly great man for all ages, but instead used these talents strictly to serve his own interests.

The book is quite easy to read, and is well-organized. To Thomas' credit, he does not report all the stories about Rhodes as gospel, and if the historical record is unclear on certain matters, he will say so. He also examines the conclusions made by other scholars on certain subjects and deals with this quite competently. I was pleasantly suprised, since he is not a historian by profession. I do note with interest that some events (such as the famous story of Rhodes dumping loads of diamonds into a bucket, just after Barney Barnato has purchased them) are reported by Thomas in the book as being stories which may or may not be true and cannot be verified by the historical record, but are presented in the "Masterpiece Theatre" production as being true. It is a good indication that in the book at least, Thomas is trying his best to be a responsible scholar.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Story!.......2001-12-19

This book is a great read for many reasons. On the one hand, it is well written and well argued. Thomas states his judgement on Rhodes in the beginning, which is a negative one, but then weighs what can and cannot be said about the man based on available evidence. He does not make sweeping statements of any kind. He also measures what past biographers have said against the evidence.

On the other hand, the story itself is fascinating. Thomas delivers a convincing portrait of Rhodes, one that punctures the heroic image of the "Colossus of Africa" while still revealing the clever and opportunistic nature of the man. We learn that Rhodes was a sickly child, whose frailty drove him to Africa when he was a teenager. Personal frailty lasted his whole life--and killed him in 1902. Rhodes was not much of a student, though he was driven to go to Oxford to acquire the right credentials. Rhodes had greater ambitions than amassing wealth alone, but we are led to wonder how committed an imperialist and an English chauvinist he was, given his opportunism. Thomas also presents an engaging description of the people around Rhodes. One of the more interesting is that of Barney Barnato, a British Jew who came to South Africa and amassed a larger fortune than Rhodes ever did and who appeared to be a better businessman than Rhodes as well.

The larger story of South Africa is also integrated into the tale. The diamond and gold rushes are described with great detail, including the largely tragic conflicts with native Africans. There is also much detail about the conflicts between the English and Boers, and even the role of Great Power interests (mostly British).

A general sense of adventure and opportunity about South Africa seems to exude from the story throughout. One of the most interesting examples in the book is the story of the relations between white prospectors--including Rhodes and his colleagues--and the native chief Lobengula, whole ruled in the north over the Matabeleland. The description of the massive and fearsome Lobengula, his treasures, his soldiers, his brutality and his ultimate defeat and suicide offer some of the most gripping narrative in the book.

There are not that many weaknesses to the book. A minor one might be that the book could benefit from more maps. There are 2 maps of southern Africa in the beginning of the book, but a few more maps throughout the book detailing the places where key events occurred would have been helpful.

    4 out of 5 stars A good survey on Rhodes's life.......1999-11-26

Antony Thomas does a very good job of presenting the life events a notable personage, while doing justice to the views of both Rhodes's many apologists and many critics. Rhodes thought his name would live on through his accomplishments for a thousand years, yet in less than a century, most of his work has been undone. Southern Rhodesia is now Zimbabwe and Northern Rhodesia is now Zambia.

I found the most interesting part of the book to be the description of the development and consolidation of the diamond fields at Kimberley. Oddly, the De Beers name which is now synonomous with diamonds around the world came from the name of a farm bought by Rhodes from the De Beers brothers early in the diamond rush. Other than this land sale, the brothers apparently had no role in the industry that made their name famous.

Much of the book deals with the ventures of the British South Africa Chartered Company, including the conquest of Southern Rhodesia (Matabeleland and Mashonaland), and the ill-starred Jemison Raid. The tales of economic and political intrigue, both in Britain and in Africa, are first rate.

    Book Description

Cecil Rhodes was an imposing figure, tall, robust-looking, with a leonine head, a man so charismatic that one contemporary claimed that "belief in Rhodes was a substitute for religion." But he was certainly a man of contradictions. He was a dreamy idealist whose favorite book was The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius and a ruthless businessman whose guiding principle was "every man has his price." He supported invidious racial laws in South Africa, and invented and sponsored the world-renowned Rhodes Scholarships. Though his own education and intellectual talents were unprepossessing, he dominated the British Empire and became one of the leading figures in the English-speaking world, the confidant of Queen Victoria and Kaiser Wilhelm, and a man of vast wealth and world-wide influence. Based on seventeen years of research, this monumental volume offers the definitive biography of one of the most controversial figures of the nineteenth century. Rhodes was truly larger than life, and this book captures that life in fascinating detail. It offers an astute portrait of Rhodes' childhood and adolescence, informed by insights from modern psychology; it vividly depicts life on a nineteenth-century African cotton farm (Rhodes' first venture) and in mining camps around Kimberley and the Witwatersrand; it traces the surreptitious stock buyouts and mergers that allowed Rhodes to gain control over 90% of the world's diamond production by age thirty-five; it describes his campaigns against African populations that allowed him to establish Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia); and it discusses the poorly planned, disastrous raid on the Transvaal that destroyed Rhodes' reputation. A conqueror and colonial monarch, Cecil Rhodes presided arrogantly over the fate of southern Africa. But he also built lasting economic institutions, furthered transportation and communication links, improved agriculture, and fervently believed that he used his wealth and power to advance the best interests of the British Empire and Africa. This biography illuminates a complex and fascinating life, a life both evil and good.

    3 out of 5 stars Fantastic Quotes.......2004-06-23

What makes this biography so unique is that it is, in fact, very well researched. The book if full of direct quotations from intimate correspondences and the like. As an avid reader and researcher of sub-Saharan history, this book is a treasure-trove of wonderful snippits of reactions to pivotal moments in Rhodes' life. That said, there are two shortcomings to this book: 1) The book is sprinkled with psychology babble from a contributer, other than Rotberg that really detracts, rather than enhance the read; and 2) the book can be repetitive, i.e. the same quotations - while great - are used over again, as are basic facts. In sum, the book is nevertheless a valuable contribution to the study of Rhodes and to the history of the southern African region.

1 out of 5 stars The Best Information Is Between the Lines.......2006-05-07

`The Anglo-American Establishment" is a book by Carroll Quigley, a man whom former president Clinton called his "favorite professor."

Quigley documents the work of a secret Group of influential conspirators, alleging that the Group was one of the most important historical facts of the 20th century, due to its influence on British foreign policy. The book covers the period from 1919-1945.

The author nearly bores us to death, and presents a lot of information that is contradicted by other sources. There is some worthwhile information here, but it will be hard to find if your eyes glaze over.

Cecil Rhodes of South African fame formed this unnamed Group and perpetuated it after his death, by way of a trust fund.

Many who were associated with the Group imagined that they were endeavoring to extend British rule throughout the world, along with the great moral ideals of "freedom and democracy."

This Group was self-deluded. They imagined that they were moral, civilized, and even Christian, but they were the antithesis of all that. Their methods were those of tyrants, despots, warmongers, and conspirators.

Quigley makes a fundamental error in supposing that this Group was at the apex of power. More likely, this Group was manipulated to further the interests of international finance, without the idealists in the ranks having any suspicion of being used.

The name Robert Henry Brand (Baron Brand, Lord Brand) is repeatedly mentioned as a supremely influential member. He was a partner and managing director of Lazard Brothers Bank. "In all of his activities Brand has remained one of the most central figures in the core of the Group."

The Group was responsible for an unbroken series of British policy disasters. Like they say, the big money is made in wars and depressions.

The Group's idea of expanding the British Empire mutated into the idea of placing the Commonwealth within a League of Nations, which is just another name for world government.

3 out of 5 stars A good historical document !.......2005-05-07

"The Anglo-American establishment" is a continuation of Quigley's major work "Tragedy and Hope." In this book Quigley lists many names of the Anglo-Saxon (means English descendant) round table and discusses the connection with their cohorts in the American establishment. Of course, Quigley had always potrayed the elitist organizations and plots as benign, and admitted on different occasions that they already have taken over the world financially, politically, and militarily if needed. He also conceded that it was too late for anyone to stop the Anglo-American establishment from ruling the world, and it is better to accept it as the new reality of the new world order.
Quigley proclaimed himself on many occasions as the historian of these elites, as they allowed him into their secret doors in order to have him research their steps and advocate for their causes, and rewrite the world history in their favor.
Tragedy and Hope is a much better book that than this one, but "The Anglo-American Establishment" might make anyway an interesting reading for the curious mind....

3 out of 5 stars Boring details of History.......2005-03-10

I purchased this book for a few different reasons. I wanted to find out what Bill Clinton saw in this mentor and college professor. I wanted to learn more abnout how the U.S. got itself into such a screwed up state, and I wanted to get clues as to how to defeat the Cabalist takeover of the U.S.
The book is full of history of the roots of the international banking elite who tried to bring Brittish (world) Imperialist domination into the 20th century. The details of the first half of the book are long and boring and didn't enlighten me at all but if you want to know the navel lint of history go for it.
The rest of the book has some interesting sections and did help me attain my goals somewhat but it was like finding a needle in a haystack. I have boring book hay fever so for me it was "Are we there yet?" the whole way.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking and indispensable read.......2004-10-14

Bill Clinton's Anglophile, one-world mentor, Professor Carroll Quigley of Georgetown, first attracted the interest of the John Birch Society and other conspiratorialists in the 1960s with his Tragedy and Hope, in which he revealed that an unelected, unaccountable elite had played a major, though hidden, role in directing the British empire in the first decades of the twentieth century. The Anglo-American Establishment is a detailed account of the growth and operations of that group, from its origins in Cecil Rhodes' secret society and its flowering under Sir Alfred Milner to its role in fostering the Commonwealth of Nations. Indispensable for anyone who seeks a case study to verify Disraeli's assertion that "the world is governed by far other than those whom the public believe to be its rulers."

4 out of 5 stars How the modern propaganda machine was born.......2002-06-25

This is a very interesting book. It was written in 1949, and it seems that Quigley noticed a powerful group who steadily built a very large and successful propaganda machine which was very influential upon British Imperial and foreign policy between the two World Wars. The writing style can be cumbersome at times, especially when detailing personal connections between some of the actors, most of whom are unknown to modern American readers.

To start off with, he makes known that Cecil Rhodes in his first 5 wills wanted to leave his inheritance to start a secret society to preserve and expand the British Empire. Quigley maintains that this society was formed in 1891, consisting of Rhodes, William Stead(influential British columnist), Lord Esher(influential advisor to the royal family), and Alfred Milner(later Commissioner in South Africa). They were to form a sort of 'old boy' network, where they would try to recruit like-minded influential people and bring them on board.

They pioneered the use of study groups to float ideas around and criticize them to anticipate opposition. When they reached sufficient consensus(this was facilitated by participants being all liberal imperialists), they would use their collective influence to get their project implemented. They used their influence at universities as recruiting grounds for people of ability. Using money from trusts such as the Rhodes Trust, Beit Trust, Carnegie Trust, they set up and controlled chairs and lectureships at universities to study foreign relations and Imperial affairs. By using their power of patronage, they filled these posts with fellow liberal imperialists.

They also controlled the Times, the Round Table, and created the Royal Institute for International Affairs. He also claims that they controlled or influenced other publications, such as the Economist. By creating studies and publishing books on foreign affairs, controlling the journals and periodicals that review them, they were in a position to influence or mold public opinion on foreign policy matters. For example, by controlling the Times Literary Supplement, they would give favorable reviews to books supporting their viewpoint. Books not supporting their viewpoint would not get reviewed, or would get rubbished. This practice is going strong today.

He also showed how the Royal Institute of International Affairs became the defacto research branch of the Foreign Office. Thus briefing material and area research to inform Foreign Office officials would originate from this group. The Council on Foreign Relations fulfills this role for the US Government today.

What Quigley describes is the creation of a permanant mandarin class and network, established by wealthy and influential people, a turning point in Western society. The 19th century and the cheapness and availability of weapons tended for more democratic power arrangements. By the late 19th century, industrialization and the rise of big business and big banking, led to less democratic power arrangements. Quigley describes how an influential group in England altered the power arrangements of that country, to effectively control its foreign and imperial policy. Such arrangements, unfortunately, are only too clear to see in the United States as well.

              Book Description

Clyde May was the patriarch of a family from rural Bullock County, Alabama. He was a devoted father, a war veteran, and a church-goer. He was also a moonshiner. This colorful memoir, based on oral history interviews with May's son, Kenny, explores May's life and his passion for making good whiskey despite the risk of going to jail. Now the family tradition is taking a new twist, as Kenny and his siblings have established Alabama's first legal distillery to bottle and sell a distinctive whiskey based on the late Clyde May's recipe.

4 out of 5 stars Very good local history.......2005-03-25

I just like oral histories, and this one about an Alabama moonshiner whose son takes his recipe to make a legalized whiskey is particularly intriguing because it creates a human story to go along with the demonized image of the moonshiner. Other books in this "Conecuh Series" are equally good, although each one is topically and stylistically different.

4 out of 5 stars Worthy examination of history through the eyes of the Senate.......1999-05-06

Historically regarded as a "Gentlemen's Club," Joseph Martin Hernon examines the U.S. Senate, its leaders, scoundrels, demagoues, and unsung heroes in order to provide a broad history of this organization and it's significance to American history and to America's future. Hernon pairs contemporaries from 1789 to 1990 to demonstrate how different personalities can affect the course of history, and, more significantly, to illustrate how history was changed by moral conviction or lack of it. In the course of discussing these pairings, Hernon reveals three overlooked facts about the Senate. The most obvious is that history often changes who we view as heroes and villains, and who we just forget over time. Hernon's choices for his "portraits" prove that we can't believe everything our history teachers taught us. Hernon's excellent ananlysis demands new, fresh biographies of such personalities as Pitt Fessenden, Thomas Walsh and George Frisbie Hoar who were able to rise above the party squabblings for the good of the nation. This counterpoint is also clear: we need to look again at such heroes as James Monroe and John C. Calhoun who truly are overrated and overly admired. The second fact about the Senate this book illustrates is how powerful the Senate has been in history and can be again under the proper circumstances. Every generation since WWII has regarded the Presidency as the true seat of power, with the Senate serves merely as an "appendage of the Executive." Hernon's encapsulated histories show that key senators have been more responsbile for making major changes in our country than most presidents. While the short histories don't allow Hernon to exlpore these issues to a minute degree, he covers enough detail to make his points. Hernon's third point is simply that the pursuit of the Presidency has at times weakened powerful senators and undermined their effectiveness and place in history, while those who were content to stay in the Senate were able to focus on changing the country and the world. Although I think Hernon proves his points in only 200 pages, the book could have benefited from more indepth examination of the times and some of the supporting players in the dramas of the Senate. However, this is the book's only shortcoming and overall it's doesn't detract from the overall effect. Recommended.

              5 out of 5 stars Interesting, lesser-known political figures........1998-01-26

Professor Hernon, a distinguished historian, pairs up U.S. Senators from 1789 to 1990, in light of their careers and the salient issues of the day, to portray some admirable demonstrations of character in the lesser-known senators, contrasted with more famous figures of their time.
Compared and contrasted are such enlightening pairs as Thomas Hart Benton vs. John C. Calhoun in the gathering storm of the pre-Civil War era, Henry Cabot Lodge vs. Thomas J. Walsh in the pivotal 1900-1920's, and the Humphrey vs. Thurmond dichotomy which persists to this day.
With photos, notes, and index, this is a useful exploration of some leaders and issues less widely seen.

5 out of 5 stars The World's Greatest Gate Crasher.......2007-08-22

I first heard of Dion Rich on a local radio station. He talked about his book and the events he had crashed over the years. About 2 weeks later I met him at a auction for the San Diego Sheriff's Museum. He walked up and offered 5 books for the auction along with several pics of events he has crashed.

His book is a quick and fun read. This is a man who crashed 32 of the first 33 Super Bowls (he missed Super Bowl 3 due to being on a planned vacation). He drove the NFL nuts with his crashes to the point where they setup a sting and threatened the man. His book has stories about crashing the Academy Awards and pics of the people he met there as well as many other events. It's an incredible man and a series of incredible stories.
