Shortly after terrorists led by Osama bin Laden attacked the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, President Bill Clinton ordered retaliatory missile strikes against targets in Afghanistan and Sudan. It was the first time the United States had responded to an individual terrorist with such overwhelming military force. Bin Laden, of course, is no run-of-the-mill rabble-rouser; Clinton called him "perhaps the preeminent organizer and financier of international terrorism in the world today." That's quite a label for someone who, as biographer Yossef Bodansky describes, "lives with his four wives and some fifteen children in a small cave in eastern Afghanistan" without running water. Yet he is "a principal player in a tangled and sinister web of terrorism-sponsoring states, intelligence chieftains, and master terrorists." Remarkably little is known about the man; as Bodansky reveals, even the year of bin Laden's birth is uncertain. This book, then, is more than the story of a single terrorist. It's a description of a whole movement waging a jihad--holy war--against the United States in the belief that America's modernizing influence on Arab nations thwarts Islamic fundamentalist goals. Bin Laden is strikingly current, extremely well informed, and thoroughly detailed. Readers interested in facts about the Middle East's violent underworld will find it fascinating--and chilling. Bodansky notes that bin Laden has become a hero to radical Muslim youth, and Osama is now a very popular baby name in many Arab countries. --John J. MillerBook Description
In August 1998 two powerful car bombs exploded simultaneously outside U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. In Nairobi, the force of the blast shattered windows more than a quarter mile away. Less than two weeks later the United States retaliated by launching cruise missiles directed against terrorist camps in both Afghanistan and Sudan. The real target, however, was one man who has become the symbol of Islamic terror. "Our mission was clear," a somber President Clinton told the nation. "To strike at the network of radical groups affiliated with and funded by Osama bin Laden, perhaps the preeminent organizer and financier of international terrorism in the world today."Customer Reviews:

Product Description
Who is Osama bin Ladenthe only terrorist leader ever to have declared a holy war? What drives him and those he leads to hate a West that helped enrich and arm them? Bin Ladens name has been linked to a number of incidents that have cost Americans their lives, including the bombing of the USS Cole in 2000 and the destruction of the American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998. Now, he is linked to the catastrophic assaults on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Here is a comprehensive account of the rise of bin Laden. In meticulous detail, world-renowned terrorism expert Yossef Bodansky uncovers the events in bin Ladens life that turned the once-promising engineering student into a cold-blooded leader of radical Islam. In the process, Bodansky reveals a chilling story that is as current as todays headlines but as ancient as the Crusades, a story that transcends bin Laden and any other single man. This book is a sobering wake-up call.

One of the most enchanting figures of the silver screen, Ronald Colman appeared in such classic films as Beau Geste, The Prisoner of Zenda, Lost Horizon, and A Tale of Two Cities. He was nominated four times for the Academy Award, which he won for a spectacular performance in A Double Life. His voice was unrivaled, and he had a brilliant career as a radio star. Man's Reach
Elmer L. Andersen Manufacturer: University of Minnesota Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0816637393 |
Book Description
Biography/RegionalThe beloved former governor's personal story of a life in service and of triumph over adversity.
Elmer L. Andersen has been described as Minnesota's leading citizen. A leader in many fields, he built a small adhesives company, H. B. Fuller Company, into a world leader, and created a publishing empire from one weekly newspaper. As a Minnesota state senator, he pioneered progressive legislative measures in the areas of civil rights, special education and welfare, mental health care, and metropolitan governance. His years as Minnesota's governor in the early 1960s were marked by his role in the founding of Southwest State University and several state parks; the latter, in addition to the important part he later played in the creation of Voyageurs National Park, gained him a reputation as one of the region's leading environmentalists.
In A Man's Reach, Governor Andersen recounts his years of service with a keen truthfulness, but also with the generous spirit that has guided his life and career. For the first time he tells the story of his 1962 political defeat as he ran for his second term as governor in a contentious race followed by a four-month-long vote recount, one of the most memorable and heartbreaking elections in Minnesota's history. Here, also, is a true insider's account of President Kennedy's masterful handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the story of how Charles Lindbergh taught him to fly, as well as candid recollections of fellow Republicans Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Nelson Rockefeller, and Harold Stassen, and political rival Hubert Humphrey.
Now in his ninety-first year, the former governor continues to inspire through this story of a man who was an impoverished teenage orphan but became one of the leading lights in business, politics, and public service in his state. Told with humor and humility, A Man's Reach is sure to encourage anyone who ever wondered if one person can make a difference.
Governor Elmer L. Andersen is one of Minnesota's leading political, business, and cultural figures. He lives in Arden Hills, Minnesota.
Lori Sturdevant is an editorial writer for the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The Needle's Eye: Women And Work in the Age of Revolution
Marla R. Miller Manufacturer: University of Massachusetts Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1558495452 |
Book Description
Among the enduring stereotypes of early American history has been the colonial Goodwife, perpetually spinning, sewing, darning, and quilting, answering all of her family's textile needs. But the Goodwife of popular historical imagination obscures as much as she reveals; the icon appears to explain early American women's labor history while at the same time allowing it to go unexplained. Tensions of class and gender recede, and the largest artisanal trade open to early American women is obscured in the guise of domesticity. In this book, Marla R. Miller illuminates the significance of women's work in the clothing trades of the early Republic. Drawing on diaries, letters, reminiscences, ledgers, and material culture, she explores the contours of working women's lives in rural New England, offering a nuanced view of their varied ranks and rolesskilled and unskilled, black and white, artisanal and laboringas producers and consumers, clients and craftswomen, employers and employees. By plumbing hierarchies of power and skill, Miller explains how needlework shaped and reflected the circumstances of real women's lives, at once drawing them together and setting them apart.
The heart of the book brings into focus the entwined experiences of six women who lived in and around Hadley, Massachusetts, a thriving agricultural village nestled in a bend in the Connecticut River about halfway between the Connecticut and Vermont borders. Miller's examination of their distinct yet overlapping worlds reveals the myriad ways that the circumstances of everyday lives positioned women in relationship to one another, enlarging and limiting opportunities and shaping the trajectories of days, years, and lifetimes in ways both large and small. The Needle's Eye reveals not only how these women thought about their work, but how they thought about their world.
