        Book Description

Iris Origo's last book, "A Need to Testify", is a memoir of four friends who shared an anti-fascist commitment in Italy during World War II. Two of them, writer Lauor de Bosis and American monologist Ruth Draper, were lovers. The other two, historian Gaetano Salvemini and Ignazio Silone, journalist and author of "Fontamara" and "Bread and Wine", lived in exile. When "A Need to Testify" was originally published in the early 1980s, "New Statesman" called it "a sensitive and beautifully written book by a remarkable writer," and the "New York Times" felt that Origo's portrait of Silone was the best short study of that author ever written. "A Need to Testify" is the third in a series of new editions of significant biographical works by Iris Origo. Books & Co. and Helen Marx Books have previously published both "Leopardi: A Study in Solitude" and "The Last Attachment" to rave reivews.

                      Book Description

Surrounding a heavily patrolled racist stronghold in the black of night, or venturing into dank tunnels underneath a prison hold by crazed rioters, an intrepid group of men challenge evil on its own turf. Under the expert leadership of Danny O. Coulson, these highly trained agents of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team execute perilous missions in crises too volatile for SWAT teams, and in explosive situations where there are....

                      No Heroes

Danny O. Coulson is the founder of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Hostage Rescue Team, or HRT. In an FBI career that spans three decades, he led the arrest of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, convinced McVeigh's friend Michael Fortier to become the government's star witness, and has helped bring hundreds of murderous extremists and killers to justice -- from the Black Liberation Army police assassins to the treacherous white supremacist terrorists of the Order, and the Covenant, Sword and Arm of the Lord.

In No Heroes, Coulson opens a long-locked door into the secretive world of the HRT, the civilian equivalent of the U.S. military's elite Delta Force. Coulson's stories spring to life with nerve-jangling electricity as he discloses the tactics and teamwork of HRT snipers, operators, negotiators, and experts in assaults, electronics and explosives.

Coulson takes the reader inside famous cases and provides riveting first person accounts of such high-profile investigations as the Atlanta prison riots -- and tense showdowns including the disastrous sieges at Ruby Ridge and Waco. He sheds new light on the deadliest terrorist attack in American history -- the Oklahoma City bombing that took 168 lives -- with never-before-revealed details of the FBI's massive efforts to locate the conspirators before they struck again.

Finally, Coulson exposes the frightening rise of domestic terrorism and its implications for the 21st Century. For him and the men and women who have followed him, the path to justice is never too steep, too dark or too narrow. Though equipped with high tech weapons and physically fit bodies, these agents consider their razor sharp minds to be their best weapons. They use deadly force only in defense of life.

Because, when people die, there are No Heroes.

Have not recived the book yet, so i am not very happy

5 out of 5 stars True account of true heroes.......2003-10-27

Although Danny O. Coulson didn't want his agents to be known as heroes (for taking unnecessary risks), this book illustrates how he and every one of his agents in the HRT were definitely far beyond the status of hero. He gives in depth accounts of how he formed the HRT and many of their missions after having served as an FBI SWAT agent. An excellent read. He sought no honor, but he definitely deserves it.

2 out of 5 stars An Elitist Attitude Revealed.......2003-07-20

I found Danny Coulson's book an interesting read but I think his attitude about armed citizens was brought forward very clearly in two unrelated incidents. It's the same liberal view we see in the left wing gun control advocates who would like to see us all disarmed and helpless. While they, because they can afford it, have their own armed guards to watch over and protect them.

Mr. Coulson was sent to disarm and arrest an evil doer. What was the man's crime? Why he dared to arm himself to protect his home, family, friends, and nation against what he saw as a government out of control. A threatto his personal life and liberties. Had he threatened anyone? If he did it wasn't related as far as I can recollect. Were the man's fears founded? Well, apparently they were since the very government he feared sent armed men to his doorstep to disarm and arrest him! A man about whom Danny Coulson had no good thing to say. He described this man in the most unflattering and derogatory terms.

We move further down the book and Mr. Coulson finds himself feeling threatened by the very government he has served so faithfully for so many many years. What does he do? Why he arms himself with a full automatic weapon and an automatic sidearm to protect himself and his family. He carries the rifle right on the seat with him wherever he goes! Does he see this as a double standard in contrast to his earlier behaviour? Apparently not because that guy was just a stupid average joe and he, Danny Coulson, was a highly trained "elite" FBI Agent. Danny Coulson displayed the typical attitude of politicians, government agents, and even some local police departments. His actions, in each case, define Danny Coulson more than any other incidents he relates. A double standard and an elitist attitude.

4 out of 5 stars Hostage Rescue from the front lines.......2003-04-25

Coulson's book offers an intriguing look at the politics and logistics of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team from his unique perspective as the unit's first leader. Politically savvy and cynical, Coulson reveals the frustratingly complicated issues that surround most rescue situations, while rewarding readers with those rare incidents when everything went right. Like many books of this nature, Coulson focuses primarily on key events rather than on his personal feelings about the results of his actions. It is an invigorating read for those who enjoy true crime written by those who lived it. David R. Bannon, Ph.D.; author "Race Against Evil."

4 out of 5 stars More than the title infers.......2002-11-25

There is an interesting juxtaposition apparent in this book. Coulson, a career FBI agent and one time SAC (Special Agent in Charge) of three Bureau regional offices, plays himself against an overwhelmingly bureaucratic and politically sensitive FBI. Coulson's view is at once an outsider and, at the same time, an insider in most of the major and politically sensitive episodes in the Bureau's last twenty-plus years. The author appears to hold particular disdain for the politcally astute Bureau culture that, at times, seems to only be concerned with it's decisions after they have already taken their toll (reference the railroading of the author for his role in the Ruby Ridge episode several YEARS after the events unfolded). What is interesting is that Coulson almost certainly had to play into some of that political mindset to achieve his various supervisory roles. It is without question that Coulson played by the rules. But he played his cards. His furry regarding the inquisition against him is understandable; to this much he admits. The Bureau's headhunt infected his faith in the FBI and, more importantly, the Justice Department hierarchy. It brought with it a disappointing and trying end to an otherwise stellar and unblemished career. And, perhaps most disturbing it made he and his family the unfortunate target of baseless death threats.

No Heroes is not without some minor stylistic flaws but it excels at what it is intended to do: to highlight the everyday heroes of the FBI who selflessly pursue the most base of society's detritus while managing against many odds to maintain honor and follow the FBI's respect worthy code: Fidelity, Bravery and Integrity.

Coulson's book reserves disdain for the most heinous in our society and the occasional career bureaucrat. And while it entertains certain whims of it's author, there is no reason to believe that Coulson is less than a hero to the men and women he served with. He is worthy of respect and this book deserves more than a passing glance.

                      Book Description

Wearing blue jeans meant I was a local. The gray in my hair meant I'd been away. Word of my impending return spread throughout the county. Some stories would have me moving in with my folks because one of them was very sick. Another had me purchasing my old grade school and converting it into an art colony. I was living in a houseboat on Cave Run Lake. I had AIDS and came home to die. My wife left me and I was back to hunt another. One story said it wasn't Chris Offutt but his younger brother who was investing in the new mall. When the truth finally outed, everyone knew I had bought the old Jackson place, which meant I must be doing pretty well for myself because they were asking a pretty penny for it. On top of that, somebody else said I was teaching at the college, but no one believed the college would ever allow that.

In his fortieth year, Chris Offutt returns to teach at his alma mater, Morehead State University, the only four-year school in the Kentucky hills. With the humblest of intentions, he expects to give back to his community, hoping to become, quietly, a hero of sorts. Yet present-day reality collides painfully with memory, leaving Offutt in the midst of an adventure he never imagined: searching for a home that no longer exists.

During that same year, Offutt records the story of his parents-in-law, Arthur and Irene, Holocaust survivors who emigrated to New York from Poland in 1946. Their moving chronicle of exile and war entwines with Offutt's attempt to find a sense of safety and home. But it is Arthur who sagely states that "home is illusory" and there are "no heroes" in life.

The New Yorker crowned Chris Offutt's 1993 memoir, The Same River Twice, the "memoir of the decade." No Heroes is a sure contender to reclaim that honor, lifting the tale of one man's homecoming to universal significance.

4 out of 5 stars A GOOD READ. VERY INTERESTING. .......2007-06-11

In many ways, this work is more complex than you would first think. Note the various reviews here. This work seems to bring out all sorts of emotions. This work is not easy to review. I suppose the best place to start is to state my humble opinion in reference to a couple of points. First, I don't think that the author was actually "putting down" the good folks in his old home town. I think he was just calling it the way he saw it. I have traveled through this area of the country extensively, spent quite a lot of time there. To be honest, the author nailed a certain segment of the population quite well. Now let me state that I am from and live in the Ozarks is S.W. Missouri. Some of the folks here, myself included, make the people of the author's home down seem down right sophisticated. I have traveled and lived all over this country for more years than I care to admit to. To be quite frank, the people the author described here can be found in just about ever town in the U.S., from coast to coast. Kentucky does not have lock on "town characters." Secondly, the author indeed has some rather harsh things to say about Morehead State University. This was silly on the author's part. Schools are schools. I work with a lot of Harvard and Yale graduates that have far less "education" than a lot of Jr. College drop outs I work with. School is what you make of it after you get out. Those attending this college should not feel bad. After all, the author himself graduated from this "inferior school," made the most of it and seems to have done alright for himself.

Now, as to the book: It is actually rather well written. I do like the author's style. The story was good, easy to follow and simply interesting. This is actually two books in one. The first is about the author and his family returning to the hills of Kentucky to teach and possibly make a difference. The second story is that of his in-laws, both of whom were Holocaust Survivors. At this point I will state that I think it a shame that the author choose to use this method to tell these two stories. Both really should have been extended and made into two separate works.

The author is very, very good ad descriptions, the country, the people the background. The author is quite good a capturing emotions. Chris Offutt is obviously quite a talented writer. I should also note that a few other reviewers have stated that the author made most of the stories here up. I doubt that very much. The stories just ring too true. He may have done a bit of embellishment here and there, but is that not what most authors do?

I am giving this one only four stars rather than five for two reasons. First, there is an element of "sour grapes" that runs through the story which I found unbecoming and secondly, I feel the author should have devoted an entire book to his in-laws and their stories.

I do recommend this one highly. It is a very good read.

4 out of 5 stars You Can't Go Home Again.......2005-03-07

The author writes about his returning to his home to his eastern Ketucky roots to teach at the local college, and "give back" to his hometown. That part of the book was informative for me since I did not know a whole lot about that part of the world and its people. But, the really intersting part of the book is the parallel story he tells about his mother and father inlaw, who are Holocaust Survivors.
That part of the book, which documents his inlaws' survival stories, is especially memorable. Now the fascinating aspect of all of this to me was that the two stories, ie his memoir, and the inlaws' history, have virtually nothing to do with each other.
The two stories remain separate throughout the book.

Offutt's style of short concise sentences, and chapters makes for easy reading. His insights into the Appalachian culture
are eye opening for us outsiders.

I recommend the book, especially for those who might be considering "going home" to give back. According to Offutt, it isn't easy.

2 out of 5 stars He sounds like a funny and likable guy.......2004-06-21

The book No Heroes suffers from a severe dislocation, when Chris Offutt tries to tell the story of Arthur and Irene, his in-laws, and their shattering Holocaust experiences, but basically giving them short shrift and only a few paragraphs compared to his lengthy tales about encountering old chums, teachers and girlfriends when he returns to teach in the hills of Kentucky.

His little hostage to fortune, Sam, doesn't like school there, so Chris doesn't stay long. In a way it's a shame he wrote this book because it makes nearly every person in the Kentucky hills sound like a moron. He is unforgiving in his characterization. can people really be this small-minded and idiotic? Maybe so, but he isn't doing the Kentucky visitors bureau any favors.

At the same time, he's great at describing things, and the colorful dialect of many of his old Morehead buds will provoke a round of belly laughs, some of their sayings are both priceless and profane. He sounds like a funny and likable guy, except he's a little bit on the preachy side.

Not really a success, but maybe he's written other and better things, I'd read more of him.

4 out of 5 stars longitude and attitude.......2003-01-11

this memoir reads like a journal and seems to square many assumptions the writer went into a larger world to confirm. my own experience: leaving the south, making friends from other cultures, then coming back (for what?) line up almost perfectly with the trajectory of Mr. Offutts story. Progress has been made, work needs to be done.
Locals who have problems with this book, I have advice: go and be.
Chris is actually doing you a service...

                      1 out of 5 stars Pathetic Misrepresentation.......2002-10-29

Yes, I am educated enough to spell misrepresentation. I am also a graduate of Morehead State University and soon will have a Masters of Business Administration. Wait it gets better. I also have already obtained an MCSE, MCSA, Dell Certified Technician, A+ Certification, Brainbench Computer Technical Support, ExPert Rating Computer Technical Support, and 17 other professional certifications. Could this be possible? Yes, it is. Morehead State University is a fine institution and there are not as many "hicks" roaming the streets as Mr. Offutt would like to believe. There is no mistaking his imaginative talent and excellent authorship, but his egotistical dreamland is very questionable. I would recommend this great work of FICTION to anyone out there who enjoys a good Kentucky redneck or imbreed joke because you are just as imaginative as Mr. Chris Awful (oops, eye lowst meye diktonary!!!)

Grace MacInnis, the sole woman in Canada's Parliament from 1968 to 1972, not only was a spokesperson and champion of her gender, but also dedicated a lifetime to improving the condition of Canada's poor. Her work was in the tradition of her father, J.S. Woodsworth, the prophet in Canadian politics who founded the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation party, forerunner of the New Democratic Party. Grace's life, which spanned much of the twentieth century, reflects the issues and dilemmas faced by many women of her time.

5 out of 5 stars Grace MacInnis, a Woman MP in the Canadian Parliament.......2001-11-30

This is an important book, which should be of interest not only to those interested in the socio-economic and political advancement of Canadian women after WWII, but also in the history of Canadian democratic socialism and Canada's twentieth century politics in general. Thoroughly researched and well argued, but lacking an index, this biography tells the story of Grace MacInnis, Canadian federal Member of Parliament (MP) from 1965 to 1972, and the sole federal woman MP in 1968-1972 (who had previously been elected to the Legislature of British Columbia). Though she didn't call herself a feminist, MacInnis was a spokeswoman for an improved status of Canadian women. She was the daughter of J.S. Woodsworth, the founder of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), which was transformed in 1961 into the New Democratic Party (NDP), and wife of Angus MacInnis, a prominent CCF MP. "If she had lacked ability their names would not have been enough to raise her up, but the connection gave her the initial boost enabling to bring her talents and capabilities into view. Grace didn't understand that her success was due to an accident of birth and to the fact that she got her husband's old riding... She deserved to get elected but that was not why she got elected."

                      Book Description

Most cancer books deal with patients who are children or seniors, or mature women with breast cancer. Rebecca Gifford was stricken as a young adult, fresh out of college and eager to begin an exciting new job. Initially she asked her doctor about the back spasms she had been having. Two months later, she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. During the next two years, Rebecca endured chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, the loss of her independence, and the collapse of her budding career. In this honest and probing memoir, Rebecca tells it like it was -- from hair loss to confinement, therapy groups, lack of sex, funerals, morphine, premature menopause, professional humiliation, and much, much more. She explores the wide range of emotions many cancer patients deny like anger, defiance, and vanity and openly shares the ordeal of living through cancer. In this illuminating look at the uncensored thoughts and feelings of an average person fighting an extraordinary struggle, Rebecca tells the reader in no uncertain terms what cancer did to her and for her.

Rebecca Gifford was only 22 years old when she was diagnosed with life-threatening cancer: this is her story of diagnosis, treatment and recovery: a story of coming of age with cancer which involved her entire family. There are relatively few accounts of young people struggling with cancer: Cancer Happens documents Gifford's challenges and her ability to be a patient advocate and choose her treatment options throughout.

                      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2004-10-15

This book helped me realize I was not the only one. I was diagnosed at 23 with Primary Mediastinal Large B cell Lymphoma and went through chemo, radiation, more chemo, and stem cell transplant much like Rebecca. It gave me much comfort that she went thru this years ago and is still here. There is not enough stories for young people with cancer, this is truly a wonderful book, I found myself connecting with everything she had to say almost like it was my experience only 10 years earlier. Thank you for writing such a wonderful book.

                      5 out of 5 stars Revealing.......2003-05-15

This book was so revealing and raw...I knew battling cancer was a huge and difficult process, but I had no idea the range and depth of emotions/issues that a person has to deal with, and especially at such a weird age. The book was hilarious, entertaining, heart-breaking, and hopeful all at the same time. A great read for anyone, but especially for those who are battling cancer or love someone who is.

5 out of 5 stars Honest, Humorous and Heart Warming.......2003-05-09

Finally someone who conquers cancer with a sharp tongue, a quick wit and without a bunch sap. Cancer Happens is the first book I've read about cancer where I was laughing one minute, then biting my nails and then sobbing like no 31 year old man should ever admit. Ms. Gifford pulls no punches. She lets you inside to see all of her pain, sorrow, bitchiness, fear, and frustration -- and it's funny. She makes you feel like you're sitting right next to her at the bar after support group meetings downing margaritas -- and you don't want her to stop talking. A great read about living life to the max no matter what gets in your way.
