Book Description
Who decides if a child goes to foster care? What dangers do child welfare workers face? What is the impact of poverty and substance abuse on the child welfare system?
Marjorie Beggs answers these questions and many more in In A Day's Work, a new book published by the nonprofit Study Center Press, which profiles four outstanding child welfare workers in California. Beggs did extensive interviews with each social worker and accompanied them on supervised parental visits, sexual abuse investigations, and into the court system. The result is a lively, journalistic account of individual case worker motivations, concerns, failures, and triumphs.
The child welfare workers profiled are: Clara Zamora, a case worker in San Francisco's Emergency Response Sexual Abuse Unit; Susan Sontag-Cristano, Riverside County case worker in the Court Dependency Unit; David Weinreich, a Permanency Planning Unit case worker in South Central Los Angeles; and Barbara Williams, a court officer in Contra Costa County. Zamora, the only Spanish-speaking worker in her unit, believes all non-English-speaking families that get involved in the child welfare system would benefit from services in their own language but it should be mandatory for cases involving sexual abuse allegations. "Sexual issues are so intimate that it's difficult to talk about it all," she says, "not just for the family members but for the workers, too."
Sontag-Cristano began working in Riverside County's emergency response and family maintenance department but two years ago transferred to the court dependency unit. "At first I hated the court stuff," she says. "Sometimes I feel like a hostage negotiator. I know that sounds crazy, but there are days I walk out of court like I just negotiated a United Nations peace treaty or something."
All the social workers profiled reveal their motivation for entering such a stressful and sometimes frustrating profession. But they also discuss the satisfaction they feel on doing a good job, for children and parents alike. Barbara Williams takes particular pride in representing parents fairly. "They are in the worst possible situation," she says. "They've got someone coming in saying, 'You're a terrible parent. You shouldn't be raising your children.'"
David Weinreich sums up the work of child welfare workers by saying, "This job is about problem solving. I tend to err on the side of the child. If I'm wrong, and I have been, then I'm wrong, but at least I've taken precautions. In my experience, children tell the truth."
Beggs' in-depth interviews and scene-setting style make this book a vivid portrait of the people who work on the front lines of child welfare. At the same time, she imparts the facts and figures that describe a child protection system in California that has grown from 34,000 children in foster care in 1984 to 92,000 in 1995.
In A Day's Work grew out of a project undertaken by the 12,000-member California chapter of the National Association of Social Workers to recognize accomplishments of child welfare workers and to portray their work realistically for people who are considering a career in social work. Sixteen county Social Services departments statewide were asked to nominate successful full-time child welfare workers. Nominees responded to questionnaires and participated in focus groups; four were chosen to be profiled in In A Day's Work.

Customer Reviews:
Very nice!.......2007-01-06
This is a good, basic handbook, with generally good advice.
I was initially prejudiced against this book when I read their extremely negative take on homebirth, which is biased, outdated and unreasonable. Our baby was born at home with a midwife, and I know from experience that homebirth is far, far superior to hospital birth in terms of safety, emotional comfort and medical supervision of mother and baby. Midwives are extremely skilled individuals who are constantly monitoring both mom and baby, rather than running between ten patients. There are far fewer risky medical interventions and midwives consistently have lower c-section rates and rates of other interventions. Knowing what many friends of ours have gone through in "modern" hospitals with rude and uncaring medical staff, having to deal with strangers and pressure from staff toward unnecessary intervention, I would never have a birth any other way, and I found the authors' take on homebirth (that it's risky and supervised by unskilled and untrained individuals) absolutely insulting, and I was hesitant about taking the advice of the rest of the book.
After that heated spiel, however, I should add that the book did seem pretty good aside from that - just a wee bit too conservative and leaning towards "we've always done it that way, and that was good enough for us!" I am a fervently evangelical Christian, like the authors, but that is no reason not to embrace new ideas such as homebirth and other more recent options.
One thing I LOVED about this book is its pro-life stance. Having read many prenatal care books, I am absolutely revolted by the pro-choice stance of many of them - "If you want it and it's healthy, it's a baby and here's how to take care of it. If you don't want it or it's not perfect, ditch it in a biowaste can - it's only fetal tissue anyway!" I really appreciated the positive stance of this book toward all unborn babies, something that is quite rare.
This book also seems to be quite well-researched and put together by a great team of people. I would say that it is generally trust-worthy and free from fringe-type advice.
I would recommend this book with reservations - read it, but read others also. Or do what we did - get it and keep it as a reference guide.

Its a shame that a great many harried and exhausted parents of runamuck toddlers won't have the energy or time to read Lorilee Craker's See How They Run: An Energizing Guide To Keeping Up With Your Turbo-Toddler. It's a shame because if they did, they would be treated to practical, frustration avoiding, behavior correcting, invaluable advice that would make their parenting so much easier and so much more effective. Tips, tricks, and techniques for dealing one to three-year-old kids include how to tame tantrums, extensive advice on painless toilet training, how to serve the little one a balanced diet, and much more. An invaluably helpful source for harried parents everywhere.

Book Description
You may not be aware of it, but being young can be dangerous. Children under the age of five - babies, toddlers and preschoolers - are injured and treated in hospital emergency rooms almost twice as frequently as the U.S. population five and older (on a per capita basis). Each year, approximately 1 in 11 children under age five are treated in hospital emergency rooms for injures. And for every 2 treated in the ER, 3 are treated in doctors' offices and clinics.
Although there are many ways in which a young child can get injured, in the majority of cases, there is one common and consistent element - a parent or caregiver did not recognize the danger involved. Child safety is different from many other aspects of parenting. The way a young child interacts with his environment - his home, furniture, fixtures, and baby products - must be fully understood in order to make his environment safe.
Fortunately, most injuries are easily preventable when parents learn the child safety basics and become aware of the many subtle and unforeseen dangers facing their children. The Child Safety Guide for New and Expecting Parents enables parents and caregivers to learn about these important and critical elements essential for providing a safe environment for their children. Topics covered include childproofing, car seat selection, use and installation, child products, product recalls and common household hazards - water, choking, window, poison - which face our children daily.
The content was selected to provide the most important information available to keep young children safe and focuses on key safety issues for children from 0 to 8 years of age. The book was designed and organized for the sleep deprived and over-worked parent. We have used a larger than normal type face to go easy on the eyes and have included many illustrations to visually portray safety concepts.
The use of this book can and will go a long way in helping to reduce the many avoidable child injuries that occur daily throughout the U.S.

Safety First.......2004-11-05
Protecting children is a parent's responsibility and Christian J. Bezick has written THE CHILD SAFETY GUIDE FOR NEW AND EXPECTING PARENTS to help readers meet that responsibility. Bezick is founder and president of the American Family Safety Network. He is a specialist in the arena of child safety. The guide covers topics such as childproofing, sleep safety, car seats, infant products, and much more.
Bezick provides an alarming statistic that shows more than 4 million children under the age of 5 were injured and required medical attention in 2002. He goes on to say safety must be learned. Parents and caregivers instinctively look out for obvious dangers to children, but THE CHILD SAFETY GUIDE FOR NEW AND EXPECTING PARENTS points out the not so obvious dangers and arms readers with extra knowledge and comfort to protect their children. This guide should be required reading for anyone who is given the charge to care for children.

Offering plain-terms warnings of numerous hazards.......2004-10-30
The Child Safety Guide for New and Expecting Parents is a potentially life-saving resource. Offering plain-terms warnings of numerous hazards to infants and children, and the basics of childproofing one's home and car, chapters cover how to place one's baby to sleep (always rest infants on their back, to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome), car seats made simple, common choking/poison/water/window hazards young children face, and much more. An absolute must-have for anyone about to deal with very young children, whether welcoming a new family member or just baby-sitting for a few hours.
Important guidance for new parents.......2004-09-30
One of the things new parents have to deal with is how to change their home, their thinking, and their habits to make them all safer for children. The Child Safety Guide for New and Expecting Parents examines how to prepare for your new child and protect them from harm. The author covers many areas of child safety including childproofing your house (cabinets, electrical outlets, stairs, etc.), purchasing a child friendly crib, car seats, choking, poison, and water hazards. Especially for a new parent there are many things that are often overlooked. It would seem reasonable to assume that a child's walker or an older child's bunk bed is safe, but they often are not. Because of this, Christian J. Bezick also takes a close look at safety considerations for bunk beds, walkers, toy chests, playpens, and other common equipment and furniture for children. The Child Safety Guide for New and Expecting Parents is a highly recommended resource for all new parents.
Important Read for All Parents.......2004-09-05
This is an outstanding book for all parents of young children and expecting parents.
It covers many topics, including childproofing, car seats, sleep safety, child products and recalls and household hazards areas, such as choking, poisons, windows and water.
I have found bits and pieces of child safety information in parenting magazines, websites and flyers, but this book has it all. It is not only comprehensive in its content, but also is very easy and interesting to read. The many illustrations and graphics certainly appeal to me as a mother of two young boys.
This book is to child safety as What to Expect When You're Expecting is to pregnancy!

A Decent Gift.......2007-05-13
I purchased this as a gift and included some wine. It made a nice compliment to the wine, although I'm somewhat reluctant to say it would hold up on its own.
It's very easy to keep your eye on the prize..........2007-05-09
I found that with this kit I was able to stay focused on what to look for in each tasting. The tasting sheets help me tremendously when there are flavors present that I can't quite think of. The book inside is quite easy-to-read and flip through. I loved everything about this kit and will continue to use it as a guideline in future tastings whether it's around at the time or not.
Perfect gift for the novice wine lover.......2006-12-22
I bought this as a gift for my best friend and was pleasantly surprised. In addition to having useful and practical information, it also has accessories that I would never have even thought of such as glassware tags and tasting checklists. For what you get, the price is exceptional. I highly recommend this as a gift for the wine lover in your life.
