A highly recommended eyewitness testimony.......2003-08-07
Ably edited for contemporary readers by Joshua Brown, A Good Idea Of Hell: Letters From A Chasseur A Pied presents the diary and letters of Robert Pellissier, a man who served his country of France in the infamous trench warfare of World War I. Vivid descriptions of shelling, the long inactive waits in the cold and the wet, the limited tactics, the news of the battlefields, insights on how changing technology affected the nature of war itself, and a great deal more comprise this literate and highly recommended eyewitness testimony of the unfolding military battlefield history of World War I. Of special interest is the inclusion of three letters from a Protestant army chaplain at the end, explaining just how Pellissier "heroically and selflessly" died during battle -- which resulted in his being posthumously awarded the Medaillie Militaire and the Croix de Guerre avec Palme.
MEMORABLE LETTERS.......2003-06-30
These letters written to his family by a foot soldier serving in France during World War I graphically remind us that war can not only be hell, it is hell.
American raised and professionally a scholar at Stanford University Robert Pellissier nonetheless felt the pull of his native country, France. This may well have been his reason for enlisting in the French army in 1914. He was sent to the front where he fought in the Alsace mountains.
Masterfully written these documents relate in gripping detail life and death in the dank, frigid trenches where French soldiers are bombarded every day by thousands of German shells. Pellissier tells his family of the horrific sights he encounters almost hourly, and of the ill treatment of civilians by the Germans. His professorial eye misses nothing of the bravery or the cowardice.
He was wounded on August 29, 1916, and died soon after. His letters were penned from officer training school, from the front lines, and from the hospital. All are testimony to a man who loved and died for his native land.

Laing's writing style is easy & colloquial........1999-04-20
I read this about 10 years ago & have recently read it again. Laing's writing is easy & colloquial, more like conversation than some exercise with a thesaurus. Laing reviews the state of psychiatry today (1985) & reviews the events in his life that helped shape his iconoclastic views of medicine & society. He eschews the term "anti-psychiatry," seemingly preferring not to name or "institutionalize" his process & praxis for psychiatry. By the end of this book, Laing & his views seem incredibly human & humane, & one wonders, Why aren't all psychiatrists like Laing? Early on, Laing cites the changing psychiatric view in Italy; the new edition of WM&F coincides with the 20th anniversary of Italy's law 180, which pretty much altered the way psychiatric services are dispensed & which was promoted by both doctors & patients, proving that the camaraderie among patient & staff that Laing longed for was possible.
A readable account of a complex man........1999-04-09
I first read this more than 10 years ago & found it a pleasant diversion from his more polemical writing. Laing is witty & honest: he cites but doesn't dwell on the cliches & sloganry that have fairly engulfed descriptions of his profession. Laing is incisive & wastes little time with exposition: he's on to another topic before you realize he's just alluded to rabid anti-Semitism in Great Britain during WWII! His descriptions of patients are heart-rending, especially the elderly women with whom he worked after his stint in the Army. Laing was & still is maligned by the psychiatric professional community in the U.S., but in Italy this year, it's the 20th anniversary of the "Basaglia Act," which was promoted by doctors & virtually altered the way "mental disorder" is viewed & treated. Laing made no small contribution here, & his easy style & good humor are evident in WM&F & just two reasons why he remains influential.

Blood Type Diet and Lupus.......2004-02-25
I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus in 1988. The only solution for my problems was to take antibiotics, steroids and Quianine (sp?) for the skin rash. All of these drugs caused other problems and never made me feel better. In 1999, I began the blood type diet and today I am healthier than I have ever been. I have energy, I never take prescription drugs and I exercise everyday. I take supplements, follow the diet and do accupuncture to keep my system strong and healthy. The people who don't follow the diet continue to be ill and progressively get worse. Many have died...and that is unnecessary. If you have Lupus and are looking for answers TRY this book. What can it hurt? You have probably tried everything else with limited success.
GOOD RECIPES, GREAT CONCEPT.......2002-02-08
The strong points of this book are the concept of blood type and diet, and the nutritious recipes. Whether one is trying to lose or maintain weight, or simply choosing their foods more carefully because they are health conscious, the book is beneficial. This book, like Dr. Peter D'Adamo's "Eat Right" series is based on the concept of eating right for your blood type.
The downside of the book is that I found some parts contradictory and the book just did not come together as anticipated. The reader may be confused by some of the combination of foods. Overall, it is a book worth reading because the concept of blood type and diet is sound; however, my preference on the topic of blood type and diet is still Dr. D'Adamo's books ("Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type, Cook Right 4 Your Blood Type and Live Right 4 Your Blood Type") they are all absolutely superb and highly recommended.
Khader proves it again!.......2000-07-26
Dina Khader's first published book is a long-awaited gem. Her earlier work crafting the recipes for Peter D'Adamo's now-classic "Eat Right 4 Your Type" has evolved as her experience and precision have grown. This work is a must read for those desiring a comfortable change to their diets with radically effective results. Khader's delicious recipes and compelling writing will satisfy the most doubtful critic. Following her suggestions, I have greatly improved my circulation and lost several minor ailments. This contribution to the field of nutrition literature is an important launching point for an increasingly important voice in the field. Read this book, apply its lessons and feel good again.
Gourmet recipes for the diet conscious.......2000-07-24
The principals behind this diet have long been proven with the work of Dr. D'Adamo and others. For the first time, however, a series of recipes have been collected that allows the serious "foodie" to enjoy gourmet meals that are properly combined and delicious. I highly recommend the book.
good effort but not user friendly.......2000-07-18
After much anticipation this book was finally published. The premise of the book is very good. Unfortunately it was also disappointing. Although the authors want us to properly combine foods some menus listed incompatible foods at the same meal. For instance grains and proteins. I know the blood type diet approach works because I have been following the principles outlined in D'Adamo"s book "Eat Right 4 Your Type" since January 2000 and not only lost 15 lbs but feel much better with arthritic pains gone and have much more energy. I do not understand the previous reviewer stating she has lost weight since the book just came on the market in the past week or so. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this book as I would like. It is not user friendly.

Book Description
With succulent fillings under their golden toppings, it's no wonder that potpies have such a universal appeal. Author Elinor Klivans offers a huge range of filling options from vegetables and eggs to meats, chicken, or fish. And the variety of toppings is a real eye-opener: homemade crusts; story-bought phyllo or puff pastry; tortillas; quick-mixing corn bread or biscuits; even nuts, potatoes, or bread. These 50 recipes go from classics like beef and vegetable potpie or everyone's favorite chicken pot pie, to new takes like the Breakfast Special Potpie: Eggs, bacon, and potatoes with an Irish soda bread crust is a great new option for brunch. Also included are plenty of meatless versions, such as the sublime Spinach, Ricotta, and Parmesan Potpie topped with a delicious cream cheese crust. Advice about assembling and baking potpies assures that all parts of the fillings will be cooked just right and toppings will stand at crispy and proud attention. With useful ideas for do-ahead preparation, storing, freezing, and re-heating, there's nothing like Potpies.

Delightful book .......2007-03-25
What's good: There is much to love about this cookbook with recipes such as "Costa Rican Spicy Picadillo & Plantain Potpie," "Farmer's Market Chicken Potpie" and "Roasted Tomato, Onion & Potato Potpie with Parmesan Crust." Our favorites are the "Empanada Potpie with Cream Cheese Crust" (pictured on site), the "Chilaquiles Potpie" and the "Springtime Vegetable Potpie," though there are certainly others that tickled our fancy. Klivans' instructions are easy to follow, which was a relief since before getting this book I had never made a potpie before. In addition to forty-six individual potpie recipes she also includes three delicious recipes for rolled crusts, as well as sections about equipment, technique and how to store potpies. After the recipes, one of the best things about this book is how easy it is to use. Most recipes are accompanied by tips for variations, make-ahead suggestions and crust options. Colored tabs on the side of the page indicate how many servings the recipe makes and how long it takes from start to finish. I thought this last bit was especially useful because you don't have to read through the entire recipe to find out if it's doable in the amount of time you have. Although a paperback, the book is well-bound and most of the recipes are accompanied by mouth watering photographs. Chapters include "Ten Especially Easy Potpies," "A World of Potpie Classics," "New Takes on Potpies" and "A Garden of Vegetable Potpies for Every Season." It's almost needless to say, but there is something in this book for everyone.
What's bad: This isn't "bad" per-se, but on a few occasions I'd read a recipe and think: "What? That's not a potpie!" The "Chilaquiles Potpie" mentioned above falls into this category, since both my mother and Nana always made chilaquiles the traditional way: in a skillet on the stove top. I couldn't help thinking that just because Klivans moved the ingredients over to a casserole dish, then baked them in the oven, the chilaquiles still weren't "really" a potpie. Also, and this is my being nitpicky, I didn't like how she doesn't lightly fry the tortillas before adding them to the sauce, which to my mind is absolutely essential because it prevents the tortillas from getting mushy. Nevertheless, I gave this recipe a go - frying the tortillas, of course - and the result was delicious. The same can be said for the recipe featured in this entry (see site), which is another example of a Mexican dish being taken out of its original context and remade into something altogether different, yet highly enjoyable.
Conclusion: If you like potpies and want to introduce your taste buds to something other than plain old "Chicken Potpie" definitely check this book out - but fry your tortillas!
Great recipes but don't believe the portion sizes.......2007-03-03
We've tried 4 or 5 of the recipes in this book in the past month, and they're mostly easy to make (though some are more time-consuming than others--these aren't "get home from work, eat dinner in an hour" recipes) and yes, very yummy. However, in every case I've found the suggested number of servings to be way off. Unless you are having the pot pie as an appetizer, or along with two or three side dishes (I don't--to me a pot pie should be the whole meal), count on getting about half the meals out of a single recipe as the recipe indicates. As long as you've got that expectation, this is a great book for weekend fun in the kitchen!
another winner by klivans.......2007-01-22
I have been a fan of all of her books and this one is great! Have made several recipes - and all delicious. easy to follow instructions, substitution suggestions and lots of photos.
Truly Yummy! .......2006-12-21
One dish meals but creative and hip too. A book for the new cook entertaining friends or the homemaker wanting to get a family dinner on the table. There is something for everyone in this book.

Diane Phillips lures you into her cookbook with a picture of the perfect pot pie, topped with a lid of golden-brown, flaky crust. Inside this cookbook, though, you'll find that what Phillips offers is not your grandmother's labor-intensive pot pie. Indeed, most of the 75 recipes are suited to the limited time and dietary desires of today's cooks. Her easy-to-assemble fillings emphasize chicken breast, lean meat, and other healthful ingredients, while the toppings can be put together in a snap. About the only old-fashioned thing Phillips keeps in her pot pies is lots of full, intense flavor.
The first recipe, Chicken Bouillabaisse with Rouille Crust, tells it all. The filling consists of boneless thighs simmered with white wine, saffron, tomatoes, and rice. For a crust, you spread toasted slices of French bread with a garlicky red pepper and olive oil purée, set them over the casserole-like filling, and bake until everything is bubbling hot. Reading on, you realize that Phillips sees a pot pie simply as something covered by a layer of something. Ryan's Pie, chicken chunks in thyme-perfumed cream sauce under a puff pastry lid, is as close to classic as she gets. From there, you find such combinations as turkey meatloaf baked under a layer of mashed potatoes enriched with bacon and sour cream, and lean pork, stewed Tuscan-style with red wine and vegetables, served under a polenta crust.
Phillips is so creative in working her idea that you are fascinated even by the delicious-looking results from her most fanciful flights, in which everything from tortillas and risotto to slices of sautéed eggplant, mashed beans, ratatouille, and a blue-cheese custard serve as toppings. Among the least-expected choices are a stir-fry topped with a pancake of pan-crisped noodles, and sautéed fish covered with mango salsa and passed under the broiler. Phillips tells when you can make a dish in steps, and how long each one keeps in the refrigerator and in the freezer. For those concerned about fat, she tells how to substitute leaner choices in place of cheese, cream, and butter. If you like casserole cooking, want to get stimulating variety for basics like boneless chicken, and appreciate the value of one-dish meals, Pot Pies will be a pleasing kitchen companion. --Dana Jacobi
Book Description
Eighty-five deliciously easy recipes for the quintessential comfort food, updated and dressed up for the twenty-first-century palate.
All of us grew up with pot pies--homemade if we were lucky, otherwise store-bought. Either way, we all remember breaking through that flaky, buttery crust to get at the steaming, creamy chicken or beef or vegetables inside. Pot pies are, in fact, the ultimate comfort food, conjuring up images of Mom in the kitchen and a milk-and-cookies kind of world.
Now, at the turn of the century, Diane Phillips brings pot pies back into our lives. And like us, they've grown up, developed a sophistication and a range of tastes and styles. But at the same time, they remain just as comforting, soothing, and satisfying as the ones we remember with so much affection.
In
Pot Pies: Comfort Food Under Cover, you'll find recipes for poultry, meat, seafood, and vegetable pies, with flavors from Asian to French to Italian to Latino, Southwestern, Cajun, and plain old all-American. They may be covered in potatoes, like Old-Fashioned Chicken Pot Pie with Chive Mashed Potato Crust; biscuits, like Mom's Beef Stew Topped with Sage Parmesan Biscuits; noodles, as in Oriental Chicken and Vegetables Topped with Noodle Pancake; cheese (Mediterranean Shrimp Pie with a Feta Crust); or even rice (Zucchini Pie with Parmesan Rice Crust).
Whatever the filling or topping, you'll find wonderful, savory flavors peeking out from under an equally tasty cover.

Delicious and practical!.......2006-01-23
I use this book often. You can mix and match the toppings (foccacia, phyllo, potatoes, pastry, rice, etc). Her fillings are delicious, if caloric. My young children especially love her recipes, which are traditional but innovative. For example, her scalloped potato and ham casserole is made with a quiche-like filling and topped with lots of gooey swiss cheese. Who wouldn't prefer that over the standard recipe? The beef stew with sage biscuits is a family favorite which I prepare in the crock pot. Each recipe I've tried has been successful. A great addition to your cookbook collection.
This book is good.......2005-10-23
This book gives you more than the basic chicken pot pie, although that recipe is great. I didn't know that there were so many tasty ways to fix a pot pie; I love the variety in this book.
A great book, full of easy-to-make recipes.......2003-03-18
This comfy cookbook is dedicated to that wonderful staple food, potpies! The first chapter is a handy set of instructions on setting up a pantry. After that, the fun really begins! There are four potpie chapters: chicken and turkey, meat (beef, pork and lamb), seafood, and vegetable. Potpies of every description are includes: all-American, Cajun, Mediterranean, SouthWest, and much more. What is nice, is that the recipes for crusts and contents are spelled out, which means that you can mix and match, or whatever.
This is a great book, one that I am glad that we bought. So far, we?ve made Ryan?s Pie (p. 46), Beef Filets with Wild Mushroom and Maytag Blue Cheese Topping (p. 77), and (my personal favorite) Mom?s Beef Stew Topped with Sage Parmesan Biscuits (p.88). This is a great book, full of easy-to-make recipes; I highly recommend it!
The best cookbook I own!.......2001-07-10
This is the by far the best cookbook I own, and I own at least 100 of them. I would give this more than five stars if that were possible. Every recipe I have made has been incredible and is fine to make for my husband and myself or fancy enough for guests. I love this cookbook and can't recommend it enough!
Easy yet Satisfying!!!.......2001-03-17
Diane Phillips has written a masterpiece. I have tried 5 or 6 of the dishes so far...and all have been wonderful. I'm a single working mom who is usually in a time crunch. These pot pies are quick and easy. Diane makes the recipes easy to follow and the ingredients are easy to find. Anyone who can not make these dishes turn out must not spend too much time in the kitchen, and better stick to frozen food! I can't wait to get my hands on Diane's next book.

Delicious and Creative.......2004-06-24
I loved this cookbook. Originally I received it as a stocking stuffer and, after moving it was lost .... until I located it on Amazon.
The recipes are wonderful and the different crusts allow you to be creative as well. I enjoy the Moroccan pie using turkey. It's the best use I've ever found for Thanksgiving leftovers.
Pot Pies for Adult Taste.......2001-07-03
Though I found this cookbook interesting, there were many contradictions and areas where it lacked. Mrs. Ojakangas talks about pot pies being international yet the majority of her recipes had a French flair to them. Personally, these are recipes I'd expect in Bon Appetit, they are not your everyday family fare. Many recipes require a large number of ingredients. Many you will be hard pressed to find in your local store.
I did find it a bit difficult to prepare many of her recipes after coming home from work. Though it can be done, it does mean eating late in some cases. If you're short on time, wait to try most of these recipes on the weekend.
Though I can't see myself picking up this cookbook often, these are recipes that are great for casual company, brunches, and garden parties. If you like European home-style cuisine, you'll enjoy this cookbook. If you are looking for simple meat and potato recipes, move on.
a charming collection of savory delights.......2000-09-10
This is a satisfying collection of 40 savory pies, some single crust and some double. The author includes 6 pie crust recipes at the back of the book, and she tells you which to use in each recipe (of course, if you wanted to use purchased pie crust instead, who's to know, but her pie crust recipes are excellent, especially the lemon pastry).
The book provides a nice assortment of meat pies; cheese, egg, and vegetable pies; and chicken, turkey, and seafood pies. Each pie I've made has been delicious, and they also look attractive. Instructions are very clear, and none of the recipes are too complicated for the average home cook.
This spring I made the Asparagus Tart, which was luscious and beautiful, My family enjoyed the Turkey Pie with a Corn Bread Crust, and the Pork Pot Pie with Peppered Corn Bread Crust, as a well as a Picnic Pie that had a wonderful, rustic fireside appeal--and tasted great. This is hearty comfort food. Also, we really enjoyed the Pizza Pot Pie, which was time-consuming but as my 9-year-old son proclaimed, "worth every minute." A similar dish worth making is the Rustic Deep-Dish Pizza.
There's something here for everybody. I highly recommend this charming little book.
Great Winter Food.......2000-09-08
The Chicken Pie with Roasted Peppers has become a perennial favorite in our house when the weather turns nippy. Good, solid, warm-your-insides recipes, not too fancy, not too hard to do in a hour.

A perfect gift for your loved ones just leaving the nest.......2003-12-30
This is a wonderful cookbook to give those just
starting out. It contains good ole American comfort
food. Everyone I have given it to just loves this book!
(Of course, its not exactly a book for vegetarians.)
I esp. like the roast meat section. Most general topic
cookbooks aren't that great on the subject, but
this book provides fantastic (and easy!) roast
chicken, leg of lamb and sirlon recipes.
Want a great BBQ rib recipe? You'll find it here
along with mac 'n cheese, cole slaw, french fries
and lots more.
Good, Basic Recipes.......2002-11-12
This cookbook is wonderful and has recipes for all the comfort foods a tummy desires, including pot roast, meatloaf and macaroni & cheese! It also has directions for side dishes to accompany the entrees. I have used alot of the recipes and everything came out great!
