Book Description
Take a close look at a wave-battered coast and you will discover a rich, fascinating, and remarkably brutal environment. Here, animals and plants exposed to wind, sun, and rain at low tide must cope with crashing waves as the seas rise to submerge them each day at high tide. How do living things survive in this harsh zone? With 87 stunning color photographs and an engaging text written for those with little or no knowledge of marine biology or physics, this book tells the story of one stretch along the Pacific coast of North America--introducing the mussels, limpets, crabs, grasses, starfish, kelp, and other animals and plants that live there, and explaining how they function and flourish in an environment of waves, sand, and rocks.
In pictures and words, Wave-Swept Shore explains complex phenomena, such as wave action, using simple, intuitive analogies. It explores how the forms of animals and plants affect their survival in this harsh environment, considers their distribution on the shore, and looks at their seasonal variations, focusing on what can be easily observed by visitors to the coast. Revealing the rich variety of habitats woven into what may at first look like a fairly uniform environment, the book, an effective and beautiful tool for learning about the edge of oceans everywhere, opens our eyes to the wonders of rocky shores and introduces a whole new way of looking at the natural world.

An honor and pleasure to read..........2006-05-25
This book eminates respect for the natural ecosystems of our shorelines. Visually it left me in awe. I frequently walk the Oregon coastlines and the detailed images are causing me to take a closer look... I am equally eager to explore the text at deeper levels. We are purchasing a copy for evening reading at our beach house and anticipate that it will become a fabulous gift for all those on our list who share our passion for the sea...highly recommended *****

Book Description
First time author Peter Embley is a man who has fought his way back from the brink. Four years ago he was involved in an horrific car accident which left him with severe head injuries, and killed his wife. Experts told him that he would probably not walk again, but Peter decided very early on that he definitely would. His positive outlook and determination to succeed drove him to push himself, and he confounded the experts by not only walking again, but also gardening, playing golf and driving.
Peter was inspired to write his memoirs by book written by a fellow sufferer. His father was a captain in the Merchant Navy who, in 1945, was killed when his boat hit a mine. As the orphan of a merchant seaman Peter was sent away from his mother at the age of only 11 to the Royal Merchant School in Berkshire. The shock was great but the young boy adjusted and the foundations were laid for Peter's own career in the merchant navy.
He chose The Ellerman Line, which sailed out of Liverpool to some of the world's most exotic and fascinating places, and the author manages to convey to the reader the colours, smells and cultures of these locations, as well as giving a glimpse of life on board a ship. While he enjoyed the glamour of nautical life he found the prolonged separations from his pregnant wife, Pat, extremely difficult to cope with and he eventually decided to pursue a different career. The computer revolution was just beginning and Peter got in on the ground floor, becoming a systems analyst with, among others, Otis lifts.
In 1998 Peter and his wife Pat celebrated their ruby wedding anniversary and were looking forward to a long and happy retirement together when the car crash shattered their lives. Life for Peter Embley has certainly not been easy over the last few years but things are so much better than they might have been. His recovery continues and now he has Margaret at his side, whom he married in October 2001 and with whom he is very happy. He hopes his book will inspire others who are recovering from brain injury.

Interesting Look into the Hawkings' Family Life.......2003-01-15
This is an interesting book on a multitude of levels. It is not just your regular celebrity expose. It is also a look into the life of an academic family, the family of a severely handicapped person, and a look into British life.
Jane Hawking married Stephen Hawking, believing that his life would be a short one. They hoped to jam as much love and fulfillment into what they thought would be short years together. They married fairly young, had children right away and set to keeping house. (Boy, wasn't everyone surprised at his staying power!)
Jane (May I call her Jane?) describes the domestic details of a young family as well as the intrigues of her tweedy academic society at the University. Its a delightful look into how academes live, describing the politics, the society and the passion for learning. At various points, they travel to the States and other places in Europe and she enlightens us on the life of the learned in those places, as well. If you contemplate a career in academia, this book can be enlightening.
She, for many years, was an astounding caregiver, dealing with Stephen's (May I call him Stephen?) progressive physical decline and heavier demands. She managed to run the household, raise the kids, and literally haul him around for years before a serious respiratory incident forced her to bring professional nurses in full-time. She recounts battles with the British health care system, battles for access with the University, and the domestic friction that one would expect when one member of the family is so handicapped.
Jane got a PhD in her own right (you GO, girl!) in Spanish poetry and here is where the book loses a star. The book's a bit more wordy than it needs to be, on a number of fronts. My PhD buddies tend to write non-thesis material like that. I recognize the style. A bit of editing may have been nice.
Still, a worthy read for moms, academes, caregivers, stargazers, Spanish poets, Baroque musicians...
Real people, roller coaster experiences.......2001-09-06
Jane Hawking tells life as she lived it with her husband of 25 years Stephen Hawking. This is a story of families - those that Stephen and Jane came from and the one they built.
The interplay of love given and received from unexpected sources is a major theme of this book. Kind words from colleagues were remembered as she struggled to bring up 3 children and help make a sick husband strong.
Insights on living with the disabled from a family perspective abound. The energy needed to run concerts, dinner parties, childrens' parties, trips and more comes through in the book, as well as profound emotions.
This book inspires one to make the most out of life. Stephen's pioneering research is clearly explained in simple terms for those who do not have a PhD in the mathematical physics of black holes. If a little lengthy, it reveals vignettes of an academic life that roams from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge across the Atlantic to dreary Seattle and sunny Pasadena.
With candid insights into her private spiritual experiences the author draws her own conclusions regarding the role of God in the universe.

Book Description
With childlike innocence and humor, a young narrator living with his single father and brother explains divorce and it?s grown-up words ? like ?New Arrangement,? ?Ideal Situation,? and ?Differences? ? from a kid?s point-of-view. Special emphasis is placed on the fact that divorce is not the child?s fault, that it is a grown-up problem. Deals with practical day-to-day matters such as single-family homes, joint custody, child-care issues, and misunderstandings. Includes Note to Parents. Full-color illustrations through-out. For ages 2-6.
Customer Reviews:
G Auxier.......2007-04-24
I found this book to be just too wordy. The concept was good, children do blame themselves for divorce and look for reasons why they caused divorce but this book is more for adults to understand how children come to those conclusions rather than something that would help a child understand. I felt that it was condescending and not at all believable in terms of what a child would say.
Was it the Chocolate Pudding? A story for Little Kids About Divorce.......2007-02-03
I found this book to be directed towards a divorce situation where
the kids primarily spend time with the father. This would be a perfect
book for that custody agreement. I was surprised that the mother was
only mentioned toward the end of the book, and a slight attempt to show
the mother is in the childrens life daily. I returned it and ended up
losing money due to shipping.
great story.......2007-01-03
really nice story to help children understand that divorce is not their fault, which is an almost-inevitable conclusion most kids under the age of 8 will draw. family in the story is obviously a middle class caucasian family having a pretty amicable divorce: families where there has been violence or more argument in front of the kids would want to add some sentences here and there. for example, "remember when mommy and daddy used to yell/hit/argue all the time? that was scary, wasn't it? we didn't want to scare you, so we decided we were better as friends than as husband and wife. i know it is hard to go from house to house, but now it is not scary and we both love you very much." that sort of thing.
Chocolate Pudding Brings Relief!.......2006-08-10
As a professional Colorado divorce (attorney-trained) mediator, I don't often fall in love with new children's books about divorce; there are simply too many fine ones already out there. Sandra Levin's Was It the Chocolate Pudding?: A Story for Little Kids About Divorce, however, is a welcome exception, a total delight!
Chocolate Pudding perfectly captures the consterning confusion divorce ushers into the world of a six-year-old boy and his little brother. The boy just knows his mom moved out of their home, suddenly and without explanation -- because he smeared chocolate pudding all over his brother one day. After all, he muses, "I was in big trouble mister!" for getting carried away in what seemed like just so much fun.
Levin's picturebook world is accompanied by his reassuring voice patiently explaining to the young reader all these new and complex adult words and phrases:
'Explaining' is when you talk to somebody about something so they can understand it, even if that somebody is a little kid.
'Differences' is the grown-up word for everybody not liking the same thing and not always getting their way.
'Adjusting-to-our-new-arrangement' is what you do when you don't have an ideal situation and it's still okay.
Gorgeously illustrated by Bryan Langdo, Chocolate Pudding's punchline is the boy's huge relief upon discovering it was NOT his pudding antics that led his mom to leave the family. In fact, he learns, he and his brother didn't have a darn thing to do with his family's breakup! (And just to be sure that all kids hearing the story understand: "Relief," he notes, "is the grown-up word for feeling like you're carrying a big heavy book bag and someone takes it off your back.")
Levin's premise is that "big stuff like divorce needs some explaining," and Chocolate Pudding is more than up to the task.
Highly recommended for young children (perhaps 2 to 6 years of age) and anyone touched by divorce's sometimes long shadow.
A picturebook story explaining the concept of divorce and joint custody to young children ages 2 to 6.......2006-08-07
Nicely illustrated by Bryan Langdo, Was It The Chocolate Pudding?: A Story For Little Kids About Divorce by Sandra Levins is a picturebook story explaining the concept of divorce and joint custody to young children ages 2 to 6. Offering insight into divorce and growing up through in a thoroughly "kid friendly" story of two young brothers whose mother and father are divorced, Was It The Chocolate Pudding? follows a six-year-old and his little brother as they try to understand why their parents no longer live together and why the boys shuttle back and forth between them. Featuring a light-hearted, easy-to-read, age-appropriate understanding of what happens in a divorce, Was It The Chocolate Pudding? is very highly recommended as an informative, entertaining, and a perfect vehicle by which a concerned parent can help their own child understand a divorce in their own family, thereby avoiding misunderstandings and self-blame on the part of a child trying to understand an adult process.

Ultimate cookbook on chocolate.......2007-02-26
Great book. Amazing collection of recipes, 1001 to be exact. Some traditional some unique, all satisfying. A picture of each recipe. Highly recommended.

A "must-have" for true chocolate lovers, color photographs of each recipe enhance the no-nonsense instructions for preparing everything from Chocolate Rum Cake, to Almond Brownie Bars, Chocolate Pumpkin Pie, Black Forest Torte, and much, much more. Also very highly recommended are three other cookbook compendiums by Gregg R. Gillespie.
Simply superb!.......2002-12-12
I found this book absolute heaven. Out of all my cookbooks this one is getting tons of usage. The recipes are easy to follow and the pictures are the best. Probably the most extensive collection of chocolate recipes ever! Don't let this pass you by. Definitely worth the money!
Lots of great recipes, but horrible index ruins it.......2002-11-24
With over 1,000 recipes, this book is undoubtably the most extensive chocolate cookbook I've ever seen. You name it, it has it! But don't be surprised if you can't find the recipe you're looking for.
The index for this book is absolutely the worst I have ever seen in any book, because it only references ingredients, not the recipes themselves. It took me almost ten minutes to find a recipe for chocolate brownies, because I had to scan entire chapters from beginning to end until I found it. I can guarantee you that you will go insane trying to find a particular recipe in this book. That's why I gave it only three stars. It would have gotten five stars otherwise.
All chocolate lovers must have this book.......2002-11-15
I love chocolate and fess up so do you! This is a great book and if you are a novice or an experienced baker you will get rave reviews from all of the taste testers ( and there will be many ) when you make just about any of the recipes in this book.
Quite a few of my holiday cookies are about to be baked.

You don't have to keep kosher to love this book!.......2006-03-05
At first I was surprised at how thin this book was given the price; however, it proved to be worth it in the end. This book is a wonderful reference for a wide variety of one-pot, slow-cooking stews. There's something for everyone here, even vegetarians. Any of these recipes can be done "the old fashioned way" in a slow oven; however, there's no reason why they couldn't be done in a slow cooker or on the stovetop instead (just use a flame diffuser to prevent burning). Even though winter is almost over, I am most certainly going to try many of the very varied dishes in this specialty cookbook.
Great Cholent Recipes with actual measurements!.......2005-07-17
I love this book. Finally, cholent recipes that have real amounts listed. A wide variety of types of cholent, normal and weird (see Spleen Cholent and Chocolate Cholent). My favorite so far is Red Cholent, which is a beany, barley, ketchupy type like I always attempted and failed.
this is REAL soul food!.......1999-02-04
This fabulous set of cookbooks not only offers wonderful recipes, but also educational information about the traditions behind the foods as well as amusing stories and charming anecdotes. A must for any collector of Jewish cookbooks!
