Excellent book you wont want to put down.......2001-12-11
"Walk a Mile in My Shoes" grabbed me from the start! The story was excellent and while you thought you knew what was to come, the author cleverly threw you a curve ball. The theme was realistic and easy to relate to. I definitely recommend this book and look forward to this authors next work. I can't believe this was his first book, very good job!

I just finished "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" and thoroughly enjoyed this book! i was impressed with the realism of the story and the development of the characters. some of the situations reminded me of my own childhood. i would recommend this book to others and would encourage this author to write more.

This memoir of a young gringo's assimilation into the exotic street life of a bustling port on Mexico's Sea of Cortez is an eye-opening account of the area's working-class life. After months of anthropological field work in late 1960s Ecuador, David Stuart returns to Guaymas with broken bones and a broken heart, finding comfort in the cafés and nightspots along the waterfront. There he reveals his failings to people whose lingua franca is the simple wisdom of listening and understanding. The loyal barmen and taxi drivers adopt him into their tight-knit circle, helping him ride out the devastation of betrayal by a woman who is carrying another man's child.
Dubbed El Güero ("Whitey") on the street, Stuart drifts into la movida, the Mexican world of hustlers, politicians, police officials, businessmen, and street urchins. Amazing good book - 10 stars .......2007-06-08
This is a genuine can't put it down and hope it never finishes, wonderfully intelligent, joyful, intense, sad, emotional, laugh out loud book. This is one of a very few books that I'll ever read a 2nd time - and a 3rd ... We came to San Carlos (15 miles from Guaymas) in 2005 and loved the area so much we are building a house here. We go to Guaymas several times a week and it's surely changed since the author's Chronicle days - but it's still a lovely little city. This is a true story - and that's why the characters and situations ring so true. Much recommended.
Note - the titles are a little confusing but there is another "Guaymas Chronicles" book - the 2nd "half" of the story - Guaymas Chronicles - Zone of Tolerance.
This is a chronicle........2007-01-04
As a chronicle, I would say the book is written exceptionally well. If it were a work of fiction, I would say the author failed to generate sympathy for the main character, himself. Because the chronicle is written so well, it may seem you are reading a fictional account that doesn't quite measure up. It is what it is. An exceptional recanting of a true story.

La Mandadera.......2004-04-12
Stuart's book is at once touching, funny, and heart breaking. It tells the story of his life in Guaymas, Mexico in 1970 and how his life was changed with the influance of a scruffy street urchin who he made his Mansasera. Although only 10 years old, she knew more about 'la movida' (the moves' than he ever expected. Together they enter busdiness and manage to 'do things for people'. Together with an assorment of other colourful characters, Stuarts portrait of life in Guaymas is one of those books that is contagious - buy it and get one for a friend.
Mexico, by an outsider looking from within.......2004-04-07
The premise of "The Guaymas Chronicles" (TGC) is simple enough: a young twenties American grad student, unsure of where he fits in and what he wants to do with his life, settles into a daily routine in the Mexican fishing and tourist town of Guaymas, on the Sea of Cortez, and makes friends with a large number of the townspeople, before finally figuring out what next to do in his life. What makes TGC special is what it reveals about the lives of the poor and the working class in Mexico. Those with an interest in Mexico's people will find TGC to be enlightening, poignant, and an engrossing read.
David Stuart chose the right profession when he decided to become an anthropologist - he loves observing his fellow man. For reasons not entirely explained in the book (this is one of the minor deficiencies), he had a rough childhood, leading him to feel alienated from America and its people. Instead, he finds his (apparently) ideal social network among the taxi drivers, bartenders, waitresses, prostitutes and street people of Guaymas. Even though he tries, he can never fully fit in with these people because, as one of his friends tells him, he has too many options and choices in life that they, his Mexican friends, will never have. But that doesn't prevent David Stuart from providing a fairly intimate look at how these people conduct their lives, how they find happiness, and how they respond to the challenges life presents them.
There are many lessons to be learned from TGC. Life is much more fragile in Mexico, due to a poorer health care system. We may complain about the cost of health care here in the U.S., and push health care to a somewhat dubious extreme (cosmetic surgery and botox injections), but this book shows the cost of not having a good health care system. Moral choices do have significant consequences; in TGC, several instances of promiscuity have severe results. And yet, through it all, most all of the Mexicans that David Stuart meets find enjoyment in life, primarily through warm-hearted social interactions and support networks. There are lessons that we in the U.S. can learn from Mexicans.

Very good collection of drills for all situations........2004-06-22
Overall, this is a very good collection of tennis drills. Tina Hoskins covers tennis drills for numerous situations including: singles, doubles, group and children drills, competitive games, and even backboard drills. That is how she reaches the staggering number of 245 tennis drills. Given that most players have specific needs and desire associated with tennis drills, you will probably find only a small percentage of these drills useful. And, that is perfectly OK.
In my case, I am a former varsity college tennis player still hitting at the NTRP 4.5 level with a technical orientation to the game. I actually love challenging singles drills. Within this book, I actually found only 8 drills (3% of total drills) useful. But, these 8 drills include some of the most physically and technically challenging drills I ever came across. The most extreme drill is the one actually portrayed on the cover page. Frankly, if it was not for this book, I did not think this drill was possible. This is because it is composed of shots that are typically outright winners (passing shots down the line, and cross court volleys in the open court). In any case, I tried these 8 drills this past weekend. And, they worked. After an hour and half of intermittently doing these drills, and then just hitting around to catch our breath; We did all these drills, had a lot of fun, were more exhausted than usual, but hit the best we ever hit. I can see how if I keep the work up on these extreme-8s, my game and physical condition will reach the next level.
If you are a tennis coach teaching clinics, there are probably many more drills you will find useful within this book. But even if you are not, you may find the book very useful just like I did. The drills shown in the book, opens your mind and body to what is possible. Out of the drills shown, it is easy to tweak them a bit to your own needs. Thus, tennis drills becomes also a mental game of creativity.
The one drawback of the book is that a slight majority of the drills are explained without drawing. I think the book would have been more effective by concentrating on maybe the best 100 drills and illustrate all of them instead of 245 drills where only a minority of the drills is illustrated. But, overall this is still a valuable book on tennis drills.

Excellent book to improve your game........2004-08-06
This is an excellent book on the subject. This is the second tennis drill book I have read, and this one is slightly better. The 100 drills are explained in the most efficient and concise way possible. In tennis, a picture is worth a thousand words. And, the author understands that perfectly well. Almost every single drill is clearly illustrated which greatly enhances your understanding of what that specific drill is about.
The author covers all the tennis drill situations you would encounter, single, threesome, doubles, and groups.
I am a former college player. I have played, watched, and studied tennis all my life. But, I probably knew only half of the drills mentioned in this book. In other words, this book taught me a lot of skills I could focus on practicing on the tennis court to improve my game. In tennis, there is no finish line. You are never too good. But, this book will help you get as good as you can or want to get, and have a lot of fun doing it. I strongly recommend it.

Disappointed With the Tennis Ball Machine Drills.......2005-10-04
When I bought this book I was hopeful that the chapter on the Ball Machine drills would help me to use my new ball machine more efficiently. I was disappointed by the fact that the chapter was geared for more than one player and the machine, rather than just one player and the machine. I believe that most of the drills can be revised so that they work with just one player, but it didn't really contain what I was looking for. I didn't feel there was that much value added to when I go out with the machine before reading this book.
Incredible number of great drills.......2004-11-12
While I agree with the other reviewer who said that the drills were tailored to a clinic setting, I have found that many of the drills can easily be adapted to as few as two people. The value in the book is in learning the concepts that each drill is meant to teach. If you need work on a particular part of your game, there is most likely a drill that can help you.
The book explains each drill in text and with a clear diagram of how the drill should be conducted (where players should be positioned, where the balls should be hit). The text portion also gives variations on the drill that can be used depending on the skill level of the players. It gives suggestions on how to make it easier for less advanced players, and suggestions for making it more challenging for more advanced players.
I teach clinics, so it's obviously a good reference for me to keep my clinics fresh, but I also refer to it for my own practice with my mixed doubles partner.
The overall content of the book is excellent, but having read through most of the drills, I've found portions where the editing fell short. There were a couple of drills where the text portion didn't match the diagram, and it looked like the description was for a different drill. But overall, the information in this book is extremely useful. Of all the tennis books I have, this is the one to which I refer the most.

This book is a comprehensive, easy-to-read list of drills for all levels. The pictures and clear directions simplify my coaching and serve as an invaluable resource on the fly! Buy this book if you don't have oodles of extra time to read fluffy descriptions and just need creative basic drill ideas to serve as a backbone for your practices.
Many drills for the clinic setting.......1998-10-23
I purchased this book in hopes of finding a tome filled with quality tennis drills for two people or a player and coach. The drills in this book are, however, arranged for more than two people such as one would find in a tennis clinic setting. Nonetheless, the drills seemed fine and there were several for each stroke.

Interesting however..........2001-02-13
The book is interesting but in many ways duplicates traditional drills that the United States Tennis Association use. The rope idea seems neat but cost was way to much, a $5.00 yellow rope can do as a substitute just fine at your local hardware store. Neat idea but i don't know if this guy wrote the book to SELL the equipment or vice-versa. Ideas seem logical but coaches have done these drills for years. I'd have to give it a thumbs down.

Great for small families.......2006-10-18
This book is perfect for couples; many recipes make just two servings, everything I've made was very tasty, yet nothing required a whole lot of work. The suggested side dishes have been excellent with the entrees, as well. These recipes are especially welcome when I've had a hard day at work, because I can create a delicious dinner in a short time and then have the rest of my evening free. Many thanks for such a great cookbook--it's worth every peny!
What's for Dinner?.......2005-05-09
This is a fantastic, handy cookbook, perfect for a home cook who is trying to break out of a recipe rut. It also would make a great gift for someone graduating college and getting a first apartment, or for someone who is single and maybe getting weary of constant carry-out. The recipes are simple, with basic ingredients, and mostly prepare two servings (although many can be doubled).
The book is all main courses and loosely organized by main ingredient: fish, poultry, meat, meatless, etc. The layout is fantastic, with gorgeous photographs and blurbs with suggested side dishes, wines and desserts. Also, it opens and stays open to your work page, which makes it easy to refer to during cooking. The recipes are interesting, ranging from comfort food like chicken and dumplings to elegant meals to ethnic dishes, and all the ones I've tried have had successful results.
If you're a gourmet cook with unlimited ideas for family meals, then this will not be for you. But if you're a beginner, or someone who likes to prepare fresh meals but sometimes lacks inspiration or time to think about menus, this cookbook will be a welcome addition to your kitchen bookshelf.

I've cooked several pasta and seafood recipes from this book and they are all winners. The recipes all seem well-tested and accurate. Best of all, the book suggests accompanying side dishes and desserts that are well placed.

This is a great resource for cooks on a tight schedule. The book offers a nice variety of entrees, including a number of excellent vegetarian dishes, and I really appreciate the side dish and dessert suggestions. This is a useful, unique cookbook that would make an appetizing addition to anyone's collection.
