Book Description
Thomas ap Catesby Jones was one of the most controversial officers in the U.S. Navy during the first half of the nineteenth century. A fascinating representative of a period of tumultuous change for both the navy and the country, he was a firebrand with a desire for reform and willingness to experiment. This biography explores his colorful career that spanned five decades and places it within the context of his changing times, as the navy moved into an age of iron and steam and a young nation struggled for recognition. It is the story of a complex figure known for his mistaken seizure of Monterey, California, in 1842 when the United States and Mexico were not formally at war. At the time Jones seemed to have created a national crisis, yet that episode, like Jones himself, was more complicated and had far greater ramifications than appeared on the surface. Historian Gene Smith's enlightening study not only chronicles important events in Jones's life but also explores how they helped shape the character and backbone of the navy during its formative years. He describes Jones's early career fighting smugglers, pirates, slave traders, and the British, evaluates his actions in the Battle of New Orleans, explains how he carried the stars and stripes to Hawaii in the 1820s, and how he helped incorporate California into the United States.
The embodiment of the nationalistic spirit that gripped the United States following the War of 1812, Jones was determined that his country would never again be subservient to the British, and as this biography clearly indicates, his actions and those of the nation's were influenced by that determination for the next forty years.

Book Description
The multi-talented English explorer Sir Richard Burton describes his three-year voyage throughout Central Africa from 1856 to 1859. In an attempt to interest both the scholar and the common reader, Burton mingles accounts of his own adventures with more scientific observations. Burton's fascinating chronicle contains detailed geographic and socio-cultural information, as well as commentary which is often offensive but always interesting to scholars of colonial Africa. Lake Regions of Central Africa is considered a prime example of an explorer's journal. In two volumes.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth the effort.......2001-10-20
The book is a detailed chronological account of nearly three years of difficult travel between Zanzibar and Lake Tanganyika, circa the late 1850's. Nothing escapes Burton's observation. He writes of everything from the local hairstyles to the price of pombe (African beer). He gives detailed descriptions of the landscape, geography, flora, and fauna. He writes of Arabs and the Eastern slave trade. He depicts safari life in the days of human porters and mules. He tells of the people he encounters, though his descriptions of Africans may be offensive to some. There is a wealth of information here, something for everyone with an interest in Eastern Africa, or exploration, or imperialism. The place names have sometimes changed from Burton's time to ours, as have the English spelling conventions of Swahili words. Anyone with any interest in Eastern Africa, especially the precolonial period, should arm themselves with a good atlas and reference book and read Burton.
Burton led an amazing life of exploration and scholarship [he wrote "The Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El-Medinah and Meccah" after disguising himself as an Arab to travel to the sacred city; he visited Salt Lake City and wrote "City of the Saints"; after exploring in South America he wrote "Explorations of the Highlands of Brazil"; and he translated the "Arabian Nights" and poetry of Luís de Camões], still he may not be an easy writer to come to terms with for many contemporary readers. He is far from what we would call "politically correct". But he wrote so much and so well, and is practically the only writer to travel in Eastern Africa in the 1850's that is in print today (except for John Hanning Speke who was with him on this trip, and who wrote "Journal of the Discovery of the Source of the Nile").
To put this book in context it is wise to read something about Burton, particulary Burton and Speke in Africa; know why in "Lake Regions" Burton never refers to Speke by name. (There are a few Burton biographies, and books about Burton and Speke; or see the movie: "Mountains of the Moon")

Book Description
Feelings either flow naturally, like a river, or get dammed up. If our emotions become blocked, we can become tense, unhappy, anxious, or depressed. This book offers simple techniques for using art to embrace, understand, and release our emotions so that we can experience a greater sense of well-being in our lives.
In The Art of Emotional Healing , Lucia Capacchione presents the simple yet powerful methods she uses in her internationally acclaimed workshops, showing us how to reach inside and let our feelings out through drawing, painting, journal writing, collage making, sculpting, drumming, dancing, mask making, and more. No artistic talent or skill is required, only a desire to let go of self-criticism and discover how we really feel.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource.......2007-08-08
I saw this author at an art therapy workshop a couple of years ago. It was an incredibly moving and meaningful experience, and I decided I wanted the book as a resource for my therapy work. It's a really comprehensive resource, including exercises in many different modalities such as movement and sound. I recommend it.
Excellent Guidebook.......2006-03-14
I have attended Lucia's workshops and read many of her previous books.
This is one of her best yet, a definitive guide to utilizing our creative spirit to heal.
I highly recommend this book!
The mystery within..........2006-02-16
Lucia Capacchione's Art of Emotional Healing offers a rich array of tools, ideas, exercises, experiences and wisdom to enrich our day to day living. Though this is new material, exploring many different expressive media, this book is somewhat similar to her excellent first book, The Creative Journal, in that it is also jam packed with artful directions for new and fresh results. Drawing, painting, writing, dialoguing, dancing, mask making and so many more activities are explored with Lucia's characteristic insight. I found a simple exercise about movie watching answered an important question I had been unable to clarify for myself until then - and that was just a five minute excursion! Our emotional life does not stop growing and changing, and the deeper we go into this practice called Life, the more we find to contemplate, explore and enrich us. What is important is stepping up to the plate and being willing to look inside. This book helps us to keep our eyes open, and it helps us to keep up the surprise of discovery. Veterans of personal enquiry will find much to inspire, and newbies can feel reassured that they are in Lucia's safe and capable hands. Any artists feeling stuck, in a rut or disenchanted will find new energy here. One could hardly ask for a better guide into the grand mystery of you.
Who thought healing could be so fun?.......2006-02-01
This book offers so many wonderful ways to express, understand and move through your emotional inner landscape. It is a veritable treasure chest of ideas and "angles" to help you mine the important insights within your emotions. I especially liked that it used so many methods of self-expression. You could easily find something that fit your mood or interests, even combining two forms of self expression, such as movement plus writing about how that felt. A form of non-invasive, private self-therapy that is FUN! Very liberating!

Book Description
How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Diabetes shows you how to explore the spiritual depths of your diabetic crisis. Part how-to book, part memoir, part inspirational tract, this book is a spiritual, humane, and humorous approach to diabetes. It includes expert advice from medical and psychiatric professionals on the healing power of spiritual practice, and stories of other people who have diabetes.
Customer Reviews:
Helped me get back control.......2007-10-03
This was a very easy reading book with great stories and inspiration. It gave me the push to get back control of my blood sugar.
Truly a book for EVERYONE !.......2003-03-13
I don't have diabetes and I loved this book! Charles Creekmore writes with such honesty and wit that every chapter is a delight. He offers wise counsel with charming humility, and even when I'd "been there before," I found myself mentally thanking the author for reminding me how to get back on the road to mental, spiritual, and physical health. Buy this book for yourself AND for someone else you love!
How to Live the Sweet Life.......2002-12-24
Charles Creekmore has lived in many parts of the world, and in this book, he invites us along on his travels - not only from state to state, but through his ever-changing states of mind as he learns to live (and thrive) with diabetes.
The diagnosis of a chronic illness can be a tremendously demoralizing event. But as Creekmore discovered, it might be the exact impetus we need to improve the state of our soul, and how it relates to our daily lives. Being forced to reexamine our priorities, the way we earn a living, the basis of our self-esteem, our relationship with nature, and all the unhealthy little habits our bodies and minds have learned over the years - this can be the "silver lining" of illness. And what's more, this increase in spirituality can, in turn, improve the health of the body (as illustrated by Creekmore's interviews with patients and doctors).
Spirituality means different things to different people and, in spite of the title, this book is not overly biased toward any one philosophy or religion. Never preachy, it simply encourages you to try some new (or new-to-you) strategies for lightening the burden of diabetes, or any other chronic illness. ( I highly recommend "The Grand Silence" - I've found that earplugs can have a huge effect on my level of stress!)
All of us will have to face change and loss sometime in our lives, and this "maintenance manual" can help anyone do that with a little more strength.
Zen and the Art of Writing Nothing(new).......2002-09-03
There is nothing new which would add to your knowledge of basic "new age" cliches by reading this book. It would not be bad if he applied new age concepts, in a unique manner, to diabetes management. But , he doesn't. The only thing that makes this a "diabetes book" is the fact that his diabetes caused him to begin a search in the new age section of his local bookstore. Usually, ADA books are excellent, but this is one time satori was missed.
Written with humor, flair, and abiding spirituality.......2002-06-07
Published by the American Diabetes Association, Zen And The Art Of Diabetes Maintenance: A Spiritual Toolkit For A Better Life is a personal, emphatic testimony of the spiritual side to maintaining one's body and health when confronted by the disease of adult diabetes. From managing one's emotions rather than being ruled by them, to accepting that diabetes is not the end but an eminently treatable condition and that life is worth celebrating, Zen And The Art Of Diabetes Maintenance is a superb presentation written with humor, flair, and abiding spirituality. Zen And The Art Of Diabetes Maintenance is very highly recommended for anyone having to deal with adult diabetes in themselves or a loved one.

Let's get cooking.......2002-03-12
I've been looking for this book for a long time. Great recipes. Can't wait to try it.
Every recipe works.......2001-02-15
I wasn't expecting much when I borrowed this book from the library. But as soon as I tried one dish, Beef Tomato Curry, I knew I hit a jackpot. Just about every recipe works..and so delicious. The ingredients listed aren't hard to find..especially since I live in the San Francisco area. I ended up going to the copy place and copying the whole cookbook since this book is no longer in print. I did call up the publisher but they have no plans of reprinting. This is the book where I learned proper Chinese cooking techniques. Rhoda Yee explained everything step-by-step. Not only that, but the stories she told of her life and life in the village is so real and heartwarming. These are bonafide authentic Chinese cuisine. To this day, everybody asks me how I make my stir-fried broccoli. They said it's the best broccoli they ever tasted. My husband is so proud of my cooking and embarrassingly tell everyone about it. This little book ranks with my copies of Hazan's Essential of Italian Cooking, Kennedy's Essentials of Mexican cuisine, McDermott's Real Thai and Roden's New Book of middle Eastern Book. If a fire breaks out in my house, God forbid, these books are the ones I'm going to grab first.
The best Chinese cookbook you'll find, if you can find it........1997-10-31
This hard to find book is the best Chinese cook book you will ever find.
Great Cookbook.......1997-08-20
I originally purchased this cookbook in 1976.
We lived in an area devoid of Chinese Restaurants
and several friends were craving Chinese food.
The receipes were easy to follow and the food
turned out great. Several friends purchased the
book as the result of our dinners. The food took
quite a bit of preparation time but the outcome
was well worth it. I've lost my original copy
and wish it was available now.
