3 out of 5 stars Good start dragged down by mediocre writing and factual errors.......2007-07-14

As a longtime NHL fan who grew up watching the tag team of Probert & Kocur in Detroit, I am no stranger to fighting in the NHL. I was hoping with this book to get some insight into the unwritten rules and systems in place for fighting in the NHL. In the first 75 pages or so, I got that. Then...

The last 2/3 of the book is dragged down by pointless sidetracks into discussions of rule changes, economics, and other nonsense not related to "The Code". The focus gets lost and the points being made are dragged down by the mediocre writing style.

Additionally, there are numerous factual errors throughout. Referring to the Calgary/Edmonton feud as "The Battle of Ontario" would be one (though it was correctly labeled later in the book); stating that Chris Pronger and Steve Yzerman are both finesse players would be another (Yzerman, yes. Pronger, no.). Labeling Borje Salming and Doug Weight as enforces would be another. Doug Weight? The guy is a first-line center. And on and on and on.

So what starts out promising doesn't finish that way. Too bad!

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2007-05-14

Very interesting topic, I loved some of the quotes.

Overall, the books thesis is disproved by itself, poor logic. I think that the author is deep down against fighting, dispite what he claims.

The real problem is that the book gets old fast. It is not a thick book, but it could easily lose half the pages. Repetition with different chapter titles. Should have just made a point with all the quotes and stories left in.

5 out of 5 stars BOOK JACKET TEXT.......2007-05-06

Hockey is, and always has been, a sport steeped in a culture of violence. Players have learned, however, to navigate through its mazes and labyrinths of physical contact by adhering to an honor code of conduct known simply as "The Code." As mysterious as it is sacred, the Code is an unwritten set of rules, the bible of hockey sportsmanship if you will, that has been handed down from generation to generation. While the Code has been around since the early days of the game's inception up in Canada, it remains a very taboo subject shrouded in secrecy. In fact, many players are simply unwilling to talk about it publicly. Everything from bench clearing brawls; to when and how you can challenge a guy to a fight; to settling old scores -- it's all covered in the Code. But, you won't read about it anywhere. Nope, there is no manual or rule book to refer to, just a way of life for hockey's elite who are lucky enough to find themselves initiated into one of professional sports' greatest fraternities.
The players know that if they break the rules of the Code, then there will be hell to pay. You see, hockey is all about respect and disrespect, and that is ultimately why these frozen warriors don't wear facemasks. Each and every act of disrespect out on the ice must be accounted for, the Code says so. If that means dropping the gloves and getting dirty, so be it -- even if that means having to fight your former roommate or best friend. Players understand that if they cheap shot a guy, or run him from behind, or carry their sticks high, then they are fair game to in turn get punched in the face. It is a very simple, yet effective, deterrent. There is a chain of accountability in pro hockey and it's been that way for more than 100 years. In a militaristic sense, it is intimidation based on the theory that a good offense can be established by having a good defense.
Hockey's rules of engagement come down to players protecting one another, factors of intimidation, and plain ol' retaliation. If a player challenges another player, then that player must answer the bell, and "show up," or face the humiliation of being considered dirty, or even a coward. Worse yet, if that player refuses to right what was wronged and defend his actions, he risks having that incident escalate to a higher level, involving additional teammates. That is when the big fellas come off the bench to keep the peace, and that is also usually when the crowd goes wild. Would you believe that by the time two heavyweights drop the gloves, that there may have been up to a dozen events between several different players that led up to that fight? That is all a part of the intricate matrix that makes up the Code.
To fully understand the significance and history behind the Code, Ross Bernstein, the author of more than 30 sports books, interviewed more than 100 current and former NHL tough guys, as well as a handful of coaches and media personalities. Their insight and memories help weave the story of why fighting is allowed in professional hockey and how the Code allows the players to police themselves both on and off the ice. It is truly a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the only true gladiators left in the world of professional sports. When they step onto the ice, it is all about the Code... all about respect, accountability, pride and honor.

3 out of 5 stars Read it if you're curious, but get it from the library. .......2007-04-11

If you want to know why fighting in hockey is not only accepted, but necessary, or if you want some privy information from some of the game's top heavyweights, then read this book. But don't spend your money for it.

There are numerous errors of fact throughout this book. One is tempted to give Bernstein the benefit of the doubt, and think it's a keystroke, like when he reports the standard size of an NHL rink as 100' X 85'. Later he lists the correct dimensions of 200' X 85.
By the time I was reading how Mike Vernon led his team to two consecutive Stanley Cups from 1996-1998 though, I knew they weren't typos. Mike Vernon wasn't the starting goaltender for the Detroit Redwings in `96-97, but he did build his stock up enough in the playoffs to get a fat contract from San Jose the following year, when Chris Osgood (and Kevin Hodson) backstopped the Wings to the Cup in '97-98.

It is impossible to type "Ontario" though when you mean "Alberta". Bernstein refers to the rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton as "the battle of Ontario", and I know he knows the difference, because he later refers to it as "the battle of Alberta". After a while of reading other completely irresponsible factual mistakes, the book would seem to be much less credible. The only thing that salvages it is that quite a bit of the text is verbatim interviews with former and current players, referees and other hockey personalities.

Here are some other items that will make a hockey fan furrow their brow -
Listing Mario Lemieux as at least 6'5", 230. Well, he ended his career at 230, but came in weighing much less at 6'4". I am quite sure he didn't get taller.
Comparing Muhammad Ali, the world's most recognizable athlete to Tie Domi.
Spinning the 1987 Canada / USSR junior bench clearing brawl as a head-to-head championship game. (The Soviets were out of contention.)
Claiming the biggest rivalry of the six-team NHL was Chicago / Detroit. Not to disrespect that for what it was, but read any Canadian's book that has anything to do with hockey, and you will know the best NHL rivalry of all-time is Montreal / Toronto.
Calling Derian Hatcher fast.

After all of that, the book is not well organized or written. I did not buy this book to read the author's personal testament to his favorite players or endure pages of redundant opinion. And you shouldn't either. If you want to read some great anecdotes, or really are curious about the necessities of fighting in hockey, then you'll find it here. But check it out from your local library.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book.......2007-04-04

As a 25+ year hockey veteran, this book taught me a lot about the game behind the game. The commentary by many ex-players had me laughing out loud and my wife looking at me funny. I would recommend this book to anyone who thinks hockey is a brutal or barbaric sport since it definitely teaches the reader lessons on what provokes enforcers in the NHL.

5 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE hockey book!!!.......2006-03-07

I've owned this book for over 20 years, and I still pick it up from time to time to read it . .it is honestly that interesting and compelling. In no way would I consider myself as being a New York Ranger fan whatsoever. That being said, when I had finished reading this book, I found myself at times actually rooting for the Rangers in the playoffs based on the writing skill of "Ratso" Sloman. It is that good. If you can only read one hockey book in your lifetime, read this one.

5 out of 5 stars Thin Ice is a must read !.......2002-12-17

It's absolutely asinine that this book was not among "The Top 100 Sports Books Of All Time" compiled by the staff of Sports Illustrated Magazine. It is a must read, you do not need to be a hockey or sports fan to enjoy this read, it is the "Ball Four" of hockey books. Don't miss it, if you can find it !

5 out of 5 stars "Ratso" and the Manhatten Rangers !.......2001-03-13

Although I'm not a NY Ranger's fan by any stretch of the imagination, this book is a long forgotten classic and a must read for every hockey fan. "Ratso", (Larry Sloman) did a great job in profiling the NY Ranger players on and off the ice and he is able to insinuate, instances of sexcapades and drug use among the players and still protect their privacy, he takes us behind the scenes of the Manhatten party life with celebrities, models and hockey players. I was able to find this book in an old inner city library sometime in the late 70's, early 80's. The chance of you finding it now are slim and nil, but if you do get a hold of it, I'm sure you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Hmm ... Interesting.......1999-04-03

As JHRay has already mentioned ... it's funny how rbettendorf could review this book and find such information as: personal bios of Mark Messier, Brian Leetch, and Mike Richter as well as the rangers winning the Stanley Cup in 1994.

This book was published in 1981. Mess was in Edmonton and Richter and Leetch were still in high school my friend.

5 out of 5 stars Prior review of a different book.......1999-01-25

On the off chance that anyone else is searching for this book, the other review posted is not a review of Sloman's book. As you can see, this book was published in 1982, years before the cup win in '94...

Sloman's book is about the late 70's and early 80's. He is friends with several Rangers, and writes about his experiences with them.

For a SERIOUS hockey fan, a great book. For a casual fan, probably a pass.

BTW, Sloman has been on Howard Sterns show many times.

4 out of 5 stars Cute book for hockey lovers-to-be.......2007-06-12

This board book goes through the entire alphabet, giving each letter it's own page and it's own hockey term or reference. The terms touch on the game of hockey itself and the history of the sport. However, I was a little disappointed in a few of the references.
There are some that are so old, obscure, or nonsensical that parents may not even know what it means or who the person is (e.g. "Y is for two glorious Canadian Years-- the Summit Series and the Salt Lake Games"; huh?) More than a few are just plain unimaginative. And there are plenty of terms I would like to have seen in the book but didn't. There's no Playoffs, no Faceoff, no Net. It refers to the Stanley Cup as "Lord Stanley's Cup" (putting it under the letter L) which is technically correct but isn't how it's really referred to.
Also, the writing is iffy at best. Nothing rhymes or has any sort of rhythm whatsoever, and at times really isn't even grammatically structured very well.
Overall, though, even though it doesn't sound like it, I do like the book. Most of my dislikes are nitpicky. It's a cute book, especially for the hockey fan who wants to get their kid into it the sport as well. It's a fun and educational read.

5 out of 5 stars one year old knows the sport thanks to this book.......2007-05-25

I bought this book for my husband to read to our [..] son. It's been a year since we've been reading it and now whenever we get the book out, Ben has to run and get his mini "zamboni tractor" and mini hockey stick that we bought him separately. He holds them tight and at each page he points and repeats hockey terminology. Even when we're not reading the book, the terms stick with him. At about 20 months, when I had my arms folded, Ben said to me "Mommy ref". This is thanks to one illustration, the referee has his arms crossed for the interference call. This book is for hockey loving families and fans of all ages.

This book is a great way to work with the ABC's when you have a classful of sports-minded boys. Being a primary teacher, I am always looking for different approaches to the alphabet. What a great way to interest boys. I first heard this book from the Philadelphia Flyers/Phantoms Organization. They came to our school for an assembly. Since it was a little over our children's heads, they read this book to them instead. The children were enthralled. I then had to order it to become a permanent part of my personal school library! Not only does it explain the basics of hockey, it brings in some of its history. Very enjoyable!!

All the reactionary whining when Neil Smith was fired after 40 days by the Islanders means that no "experts" in the media bothered to read or remember this book. Neil Smith is a whiny dork who watched as Mike Keenan underminded him at every opportunity. Read this book and be happy.

A worthy summary of the Rangers cup winning season and subsequent failure. Not quite a behind the scenes look at the team but lots of interesting antecdotes the average fan (like me) would otherwise miss. Great insight into Mike Keenan and why his tactics worked for the Rangers (until game 4 vs the Devils). Also gives insight into why they don't work now. I read it in two days and would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for an introduction to hockey.......2007-10-13

Needs to be updated to reflect significant rule changes in NHL in last 3 years, but otherwise it is a good introduction to hockey. Has lots of good, clear illustrations. The greatest value of this book is the illustrations of referee signals since when watching amateur hockey or league hockey the ref's signal is not announced over a PA system.

This book is wonderfully writen and easy to understand for people who want to learn the basics of hockey. I have been an occasional spectator of the sport since 1965 and enjoy watching high school, college and professional games (especially the Minnesota Wild!). Unfortunately, I wasn't familiar with all of the rules and types of penalties (except for of course, high sticking, hooking and slashing). So just the other day, while watching an intense college game, I decided it was time to buy a book. I am pleased with my selection and am buying another copy for my friend. By the way, were women!

3 out of 5 stars Okay... not the greatest book.......2007-10-15

This book wasn't bad. It was cute at parts and flowed right along. I have on major complaint. The end seemed rather abrupt. It seems as if our characters had various things to overcome, and *poof* the book ended. I felt like I had bother to read this book and was somewhat disappointed. I don't want to give anything away, but this wouldn't be my first choice for a romantic read.

5 out of 5 stars A fun book to read!.......2007-04-29

As a hockey fan, I appreciated the setting of this book. I like the way Deidre Martin writes: snappy, sexy, fast-paced, action-packed yet tender too. The sexual tension and banter was well written and witty, without coming across as hostile and abrasive. The characters were well-drawn, likable despite their flaws. I especially appreciated the subplot of caring for and mentoring Tuck. Both protagonists make a huge difference in his young life, each in their own special way. Kudos to the author for a wonderful story, and I can't wait to read the others in the series.

I kept putting off reading Dierdre Martin...see I read a bunch of other authors, so I didn't want to add to my list...WHAT A MISTAKE! She is a fabulous writer. I was caught from the 1st sentence. You really get to know these characters...so much that you cry when they cry and you laugh (sometimes outloud) when they laugh. Dierdre is such a talented writer. I am waiting (not very patiently) for her next book, Chasing Stanley. Please don't make the same mistake I made...don't wait to read these books, GET THEM NOW, and enjoy them as much as I did!

4 out of 5 stars If only all reunions could include romance!.......2006-07-24

Former heavyweight Katie reluctantly attends her high school reunion. Treated like a leper by the more popular students, she has lost a lot of weight, gone to college, and is now at home helping her mom take care of her nephew and on a sabbatical writing a book about the sociology of sports. Most of the people she meets at the reunion are apologetic about the way they treated her until nemesis Liz Flaherty makes an appearance and is still as snotty and childish as ever. As Katie leaves the party, she manages to capture the attention of fellow former student Paul Van Dorn, who has returned home after a career-ending head injury cut his NHL career short. Paul is still having difficulty coming to terms with his present as a bar owner and moving on from his past glory days.

Paul is flattered when he is asked to coach a local hockey team, until he finds out that it is the juniors - 9 to 10 year olds who know little about the sport but love to skate. But in Katie's nephew Tuck, he finds raw talent. When Katie finally succumbs to Paul's charms (after a very horrific but funny first date), she fears that people will assume Tuck has gotten ice time because of her. Tuck is currently motherless as his mom is in a detox center. When she gets out, he wants to stay with Katie but mom Mina has other thoughts, and often Tuck is not a priority in her misguided life. Katie would love nothing more than to be a bigger part of Tuck's life.

The biggest obstacle in the relationship is the fact that Paul is so committed to his past, while Katie would rather never think about the worst period of her life. And of course Liz is waiting in the wings to wreak additional havoc on Katie's life. Will these two ever be able to find some middle ground?

Martin redeems herself after last year's abysmal "Total Rush" with a compelling and romantic story about second chances both in life and love. The result is a tempting tale!

4 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Light.......2006-07-17

This book was a refreshing break from some of the really heavy paranormal or historical romances I've read lately. Yeah, it's a bit superficial and light, but it was written well, and kept my interest. I finished the entire book in a day, whereas sometimes I can take days to slog through a book. The author has a good style and is very witty, at times this book made me smile or even laugh out loud, and that's just the thing for a good summer romance book.

Book Description

In Blood Feud, Colorado Avalanche beat writer Adrian Dater not only submits that the Red Wings-Avalanche rivalry was the most feverish match-up in recent years, but also that there was none better played.

5 out of 5 stars AWSOME READ.......2007-06-27

anyone who is a hockey fan would enjoy this read, if your an avalanche or red wing fan its a must read, could not put it down untill finished, have passed on to other hockey fans and have enjoyed as much as I have, I even have read out loud to the guys at work during break bits of the book, anyone who enjoys hockey would find this a great read

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Topic; Average Story.......2007-05-25

'Blood Feud' by Adrian Dater tells the story of the infamous Detroit-Colorado rivalry that was responsible for some of the best hockey during the 1990s.

The strong points of this book include interesting biographical information about some of the rivalry's stars (Roy, Lemieux, McCarty, and Bowman to name a few). Another solid component of this book was the inclusion of some of the 'behind the scenes' chatter among the rivals including the details of the famous exchange between Crawford and Bowman. The material was also presented in a fairly even-handed way (pretty remarkable considering this guy is Colorado media).

This book has its weak points as well. The author attempted to weave in and out of the storyline too much. You'll find yourself reading about a particular playoff series, only to be randomly pulled out of it and thrown into another topic (at times, this really killed the flow of the story). Another notable weak point is the author's statement that the Ray Borque to Colorado trade was possibly the "greatest steal of a deal in NHL history" which is absurd. Finally, there were far too many awkward personal interjections by the author (often unrelated to the story itself).

Overall, for this price, I'd recommend reading this book if you have an interest in the rivalry. Don't buy it with the hopes of it being a literary work of art; just enjoy it for what it is: an insider's recollection of an exciting NHL rivalry.

5 out of 5 stars Wingnut Residing in Denver.......2007-05-23

As a 27 year Detroit native living the last 13 years in Denver, I was in the emotional vortex of this great rivalry. This book was a great read and brought back all the polar feelings from these incredible games and bloody fights. Mr. Dater retells this story in a bioptic fashion, delving into the important characters and the stories behind the story. He points out the strange ironic twists that festered into this Hockey hatred. His fact finding was thorough and impressive on both teams. His writing style is casual, easy to read and similar to Jon Krakauer's "Into thin Air." Anyone who suggests Avalanche bias is way off base. This Denver newspaper writer is arguably tougher on the Av's than the Wings with most negative ink heaped on Lemieux and Crawford and some not too flattering episodes by Patrick Roy. Luckily this was an easy read because I had a hard time putting it down after page 1. Sent a copy to my brother in Detroit and he was late to work the morning he cracked it open. He showed the book to his boss and his tardiness was quickly forgotten and his book quickly borrowed.

1 out of 5 stars Sad Day for the Written Word.......2007-04-21

Whether your an Avs or Redwings fan (I am the former) this book is a disgrace to readers everywhere. While I appreciate the subject matter, which kept me from tossing this book into the flames before I was finished, Adrian Dater's inability to write with any depth or clarity is evident. Perhaps there is a bit more background on the relevant events, but the bios focusing on Bowman, Lemieux, Roy and McCarty are pure filler. Half the book is in quotes so I hope Woody Paige and Mark Kiszla are getting royalties from this. There are also sections about Dater himself and self realizations he has. I don't care! I didn't pick up this book to learn about Dater drinking high protein shakes and mentally pounding his HS tormentors. The editor over at Taylor Trade should submit his/her resignation. This should be a pamphlet, but with misc. facts that stray from the subject combined with 12 point font make it two hundred plus pages of dribble. This "book" is a failure on all levels and it's a shame Amazon forces one to give any stars.

3 out of 5 stars Blood Feud Review.......2007-04-14

First of all, this book is worth the price just for, as other comments have attested to, the screaming match that Crawford had with Bowman in 97; vulgar, but albeit priceless stuff. Second of all, it would be nice to see a Detroit reporter put together a similar account because I don't know how everyone can take this account as "unbiased". This guy is an Avs reporter for the Post for crying out loud! He includes numerous excerpts from the apparently unabashed homer Avs radio man, while providing nothing from Ken Kal, the Wings radio man who, apparently with his middle-of-the-road approach, is too boring for this book. Look, I am an honest Red Wings fan and appreciated the rivalry between both teams, but there are definitely pro-Avalanche slants in this book. Granted there are few, but they are still there. I would appreciate a counter-offer from the Detroit perspective, maybe from Bob Wojonowski, who is probably one of the top three Detroit sports writers.

Book Description

An insider's look at life on the lines

To hockey fans, Ray Scapinello's name and face are as recognizable as any star player or coach in the NHL. Scampy, as he is affectionately known has had a long and storied career as a linesman in the NHL. His 5-foot-7 frame and 163 pounds belie his ability and endurance on the ice. When Ray retired in 2004 after 33 years in the NHL, he had officiated in 2,500 regular season matches (never missing a game), 426 playoff games, and an astounding twenty Stanley Cup final series. His untouchable statistics make him a lock to enter the Hockey Hall of Fame as an official, but even they do not do justice to the respect he has earned from officials, players, coaches, and fans alike. On and off the ice, Scampy is considered one of hockey's great personalities, a consummate professional, a chronic practical joker, and a true ambassador of the sport.

Between the Lines gives a rare glimpse inside the world of hockey from an unusual perspective — through the eyes of one of the game's greatest and best-loved officials. Scampy shares his tales of life both on and off the ice as an official, an inside look at what those players and coaches are really like, what they really say and do, and what the game looks like between the lines. Full of fun stories, perspective on how the game has changed and evolved, and stories and interviews about Scampy from players, coaches, and other officials, Between the Lines is a captivating memoir of a truly unique life in hockey.

3 out of 5 stars Hockey fans will like it..........2007-03-28

As an avid hockey fan, I enjoyed all of the stories in the book. It provides incredible insight into the NHL and its officials. I found myself thouroughly amazed at how much extracurricular stuff goes on during a hockey game between the officials and players.

That said, the book itself was dissapointing. It seems to skip around alot, telling a story and then going off on several related tangents before returning to the original point. This causes the author to repeat himself several times, particularly across several chapters.

Perhaps most dissapointing is the general lack of "Scampy" stories through the first two thirds of the book. It's more of a "life of the NHL officials" type of book than a story about the life and career of a specific person. This is why hockey fans will still enjoy this book, reading background stories about NHL games always provides a unique, new, and enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, this book is published as an [auto]biography and that takes away from the overall enjoyment of the book.

1 out of 5 stars A big let down...Scampy held back.......2007-01-20

I really looked forward to reading this book over the Christmas holiday.

However, it's very painful for me to say that this book was a complete and total let down. Based on Scampy's tenure in the NHL, I would have expected so much more, but Scampy held back. Clearly, Scampy didn't want to do a "tell all" book, but this book was so poorly written and organized with weak stories and annecdotes. Scampy certainly had better material that he could have shared with us. Perhaps I can't blame him for not wanting to get into more details on topics the average hockey fan would want to know.

Scampy was the best linesmen I ever saw and his career spanned so many years. It's just too bad the book did not get into the level of detail and stories that Scampy must surely have filed in his memory banks that we all would have enjoyed reading.

Fantastic Book - a must have for any die hard hockey fan. Great insight into the game and it's history.

Book Description

Lavishly illustrated, beautifully designed, impeccably researched, and wonderfully written, Hockey: A People’s History is the altogether irresistible companion book to the CBC-Television series of the same name, airing in Fall 06. A must-have for every fan!

Hockey is not just Canada’s national game, it is part of every Canadian’s psyche, whether we like it or not. Watching it, playing it, coaching it, and talking about it are up there with eating on the list of the top ten things Canadians do most. In the first half of the last century it mirrored our increasing confidence as a nation and in the last years of the 1900s, which saw an aggressive but unsettling expansion of the game south of the border, it reflected our growing wariness of American influence on Canada.

Hockey: A People’s History, like the ten-part CBC series it accompanies, tells the story of this breathtakingly fast game from its hotly contested origins, and the surge in its popularity after 1875, when it was first taken inside, through the rise and fall and rise again of women’s hockey, the sagas of long-lost leagues, such as the Pacific Coast Hockey League and, more recently, the World Hockey Association, to the present day and the first-ever lockout of players by the one remaining league. In that time, while play has changed only slightly (every generation of Canadians has complained about the growing violence of the game) hockey itself has been transformed from a rough and ready winter sport to a business worth many billions of dollars, played by millionaires.

But Hockey: A People’s History is not a business story, rather, it is the story of the men and woman who helped make the game what it is today.

It also tells the story of all the great moments in hockey: not just the unforgettable 1972 victory against Russia, but victories no less glorious at the time, such as the Leafs’ previously unheard-of third consecutive Stanley Cup in 1949. Through its lavishly illustrated pages skate the players, the coaches, the owners, many of them still legendary, too many of them almost forgotten. They are the reason why Canadians have stayed true to the game.

5 out of 5 stars A Great History.......2007-03-08

Having been a Hockey buff for just over 50 years, I found this volume to be the most comprehensive and complete treatment of the subject that I have read over the years, having read several. It reveals some information not generally known to those not in the "industry". I found this book to be a fascinating, don't want to put it down read. My congratulations to Michael Mckinley.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book that brings the history of the game alive..........2007-02-28

If you're a hockey fan with an appreciation for the history of the game, *this* is the book you need to read... Hockey: A People's History by Michael McKinley. This both entertained and educated me, and brought the history of hockey alive in a way I've never seen it before.

Contents: Prologue; The Temple and the Chalice; Gold After Silver; Blood and Champagne; The Dustbowl Dream; A Cool Medium; Us and Them; The Soul of a Nation; Hope and Betrayal; The Winter of Our Discontent; Reclaiming the Game; Acknowledgements; Index

This is a coffee-table companion book to a CBC series of the same name. Not living in Canada, I can't say I've seen the series. But if it's anything like the book, it must be outstanding. McKinley goes back to the beginning of the game we know as hockey, back to 1875 when the first game was played in Montreal. Many other variations of the game existed before then, but generally speaking, this is when the game started in its modern form. Lavishly illustrated, he works his way up through time, from the birth of the Stanley Cup to the lockout season of 2004-2005. In between, you learn about the great names of the sport who often are just names attached to trophies unless you know the history... Hobie Baker, Frank Calder, Conn Smythe, and many others. The stories of teams put together to challenge for the Stanley Cup, back in the day when it was up for grabs to just about anyone. There's even coverage of the Portland Rosebuds, who challenged the Montreal Canadiens in 1916. Junior and women's hockey also figure prominently in the story, so whatever your particular interest niche is for the game, you'll find it in here.

I remember a few years back when my kids attended a hockey camp in Penticton, British Columbia. The final day included a game played in the city arena that was home to the Penticton Vees. It's an old-time barn, with plenty of memorabilia from years gone by. But until I read this book, I didn't realize just how big a deal that team was. That team went over to Germany in 1955 and beat the Russian team for the World Championships, and was the toast of Canada in the midst of the Cold War tension of the time. Walking through the arena, you could almost feel the ghosts of history, the thousands of games that had been played there. It's hard to explain, but hockey in Canada is more than just a sport, it's a national identity and obsession.

I don't know that I've spent as much time lingering and savoring a book than I did this one. It's a pleasure to read, and will add immensely to your understanding and respect of the game.
