    Book Description

Introduction by Frederick C. Leiner. During his distinguished fifty-seven year naval career, Charles Morris was instrumental in bringing the fledgling U.S. Navy through its early trials and in plotting a course to the greatness that would follow. In 1804 he was at Stephen Decatur's side during the fabled burning of the captured Philadelphia in Tripoli Harbor. During the War of 1812, he was second in command to Isaac Hull when Constitution defeated Guerriere. In 1880--eighteen years before the official start of its book-publishing program--the Naval Institute published his autobiography as an issue of Proceedings magazine. Later that year, a Boston publisher brought it out in book form, but this is the first time it has appeared in print since.

With an introduction by an author who specializes in the early American Navy, this new Classics of Naval Literature edition will be welcomed by historians and buffs alike for Morris's eyewitness accounts of the seminal events of his time. Unlike many other writers of the era, he wrote in a style that modern readers will find engaging. Joining the Navy as it reorganized for the Quasi-War with France, Morris fought in its early engagements and later served in many key posts as the Navy traded sails for steam and smooth bore cannon for rifled guns. Echoing the words of naval historian J. R. Soley in the original preface, this book may still offer lessons for the Navy of today.

          Book Description

Although during his lifetime the bulk of his work went unpublished, Renaissance scholar Thomas Harriot is now recognized as a major contributor to many fields of learning, such as mathematics, astronomy, and botany. Harriot's theories, inventions, and discoveries were as groundbreaking as they were controversial. From his daring exploration of the New World to his scientific findings on subjects as diverse as alchemy and the moons of Jupiter, Harriot's accomplishments reflect the endless curiosity of a remarkable mind. The author draws on the diary entries of Harriot's close friend, Thomas Buckner, and Harriot's own maps, diagrams, and handwritten notes, to capture the authentic flavor of an extraordinary time, as well as the enigmatic character of a genius. This is a small volume, but if you have an interest in the native language of the North Carolina Algonquians (also known as the Croatans, the ancestors of the present-day Lumbees), it is invaluable. The Croatan language has long been extinct, and nearly everything that is known about it is gathered into this slim book: five sixteenth and seventeenth century glossaries, plus a historical background.

                      Book Description

ou probably didn't realize that when you graduate from college you increase your lifespan, or that your co-worker who has a slightly better job is more likely to live a healthier life. In this groundbreaking book, epidemiologist Michael Marmot marshals evidence from nearly thirty years of research to demonstrate that status is not a footnote to the causes of ill health-it is the cause. He calls this effect the status syndrome. The status syndrome is pervasive. It determines the chances that you will succumb to heart disease, stroke, cancers, infectious diseases, even suicide and homicide. And the issue, as Marmot shows, is not simply one of income or lifestyle. It is the psychological experience of inequality-how much control you have over your life and the opportunities you have for full social participation-that has a profound effect on your health. The Status Syndrome will utterly change the way we think about health, society, and how we live our lives.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An important contribution to understanding health inequalities.......2005-12-20

Marmot began his important work on social determinants of health with two long term studies of the British Civil Service finding that those who enjoyed higher status roles had better health and longer life expectancy than those who had lower status roles. This gradient from higher to lower applied throughout the service. Why was it so? And did it apply in other social and cultural contexts?

This book is a compelling exploration of the commonality of this phenomenum throughout both developed/transitional and developing country contexts, exploring the evidence and sifting the reasons for it. Status is found to be crucial - people with more opportunity to control their lives are more resiliant to stress and enjoy better health as a result (I simplify). It is not that healthier people enjoy better status because they are healthier - an argument carefully considered and dismissed - but people enjoying social contexts that enable them to secure status will enjoy better health and longer life. This applies as much to the rich social opportunities of Kerala in India as it does to an upper middle class suburb in the United States. Poverty, in itself, once basic needs are met, is not the issue as long as it is equally shared with all, what matters is the disequilibrium between people's status and being in the population denied access to opportunity to control one's life. The book is well-written, closely argued, and could change how you see the world for good.

1 out of 5 stars A book of socialist faith, not reason.......2005-11-24

Open Professor Marmot's book to almost any page and see him make firm statements and firm conclusions about research and anecdotal evidence which are in fact quite uncertain. It seems reasonable that status affects health, indeed I believe it does, but Professor Marmot throws anecdotes or questionable research conclusions at the troublesome fact that healthier people will achieve greater status, or in other words that healthier people are healthier.

Professor Marmot cares only about "inequality", not evil. For example, he appears to see no difference between the millions of Russians murdered by Stalin during Communist rule and the millions of Russians who have had shortened life expectancies during the collapse and aftermath of Communist rule, supposedly as a result of "inequality". Could these tens of millions of deaths have been due to people like Professor Marmot who sought a government-mandated end to inequality, and not to inequality itself?

Perhaps because the book promotes a politically correct, leftist, government-solution, tax and spend agenda as a solution for "inequality", it does not appear to have attracted serious criticism of its scholarship.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable teaching aid for public health students.......2005-10-04

This book is the perfect introduction to the study of Health Inequalities, especially in the context of occupational health. Students are gripped.

5 out of 5 stars A topic in its infancy.......2004-09-29

You are a hot shot in a company, though not the boss. You are paid extremely well, but, again you have plenty of bosses above you (say the partners of an investment firm). Is it better than deriving a modest income being your own boss? The counterintuive answer is NO. You will live longer in the second situation, even controlling for diet, lifestyle, and genetic predispositions.
Marmot spent years poring over data; he left no stone unturned and is well read in the general literature on human nature. This idea of people living longer when they exert control over their lives has not spread yet. That people lead longer lives when they trust their neighbors and feel part of a community is far reaching. Just think of the implications on social justice etc. Also think that everything you learn on human preferences and well-being in both economics and medicine is either incomplete (medicine) or bogus (economics).
The book is well written, humorous at times, and rigorous --it reads like a well-translated scientific paper. But it feels that it is just the introduction to a topic. Please, write the continuation.

When connoisseurs speak of wine as a long-term investment that can appreciate in gustatory (and monetary) value for decades, they usually refer to red Bordeaux, France's biggest and longest-lasting wine. But as the cachet of Bordeaux continues to attract legions of wine fanatics across the globe, the 90s have seen Bordeaux prices skyrocket. The importance of informed buying has never been more acute, and Parker's guide is simply the best available. Updated from the original 1985 edition, the third edition of Bordeaux is organized along the same lines as the region's wine classifications. After introducing the style, history, and techniques specific to each principal appellation, Parker discusses the featured châteaux in detail--from the techniques of the vintners to the peculiarities of the all-important terroir. Parker's ratings for the tasted vintages, based on the 100-point scale he popularized through The Wine Advocate, are the real crux of each winery's listing. Performing all his tastings in "single blind" style--where each wine is judged without knowledge of the price or producer, and only in context with similar wines--assures a measure of independence in the tastings. Big-name wines are often deflated, and many "also-rans" from the landmark quality classification of 1855 finally win their deserved recognition.

The third edition naturally highlights the series of (mostly good) vintages that Bordeaux has seen since the release of the second edition in 1991, but it also includes updated tasting notes on the vintners and vintages Parker has revisited since that time. His opinions command such worldwide attention that, given time, either your palate or your wallet is bound to benefit from keeping up with Parker's advice. --Todd Gehman

                      Book Description

When Robert M. Parker, Jr.'s Bordeaux was first published in 1985, it was greeted with tremendous enthusiasm by such legendary authorities as Hugh Johnson and Michael Broadbent. Time, Newsweek, Business Week, Esquire, and People magazines soon joined in the praise, and the book became a huge commercial and critical success. In England, it won the prestigious Glenfiddich award.

Since that time, Parker has published eight other books for wine lovers, many of which have received critical awards -- Burgundy, The Wines of the Rhône Valley and Provence, four editions of the Wine Buyer's Guide, The Wines of the Rhône Valley, and an updated edition of Bordeaux in 1991 -- as well as his highly respected newsletter, The Wine Advocate, and bi-monthly columns in Food & Wine magazine. With each book, his audience has expanded to the point where not only American wine consumers but also those in France, England, Japan, Sweden, and Germany have quickly learned to trust his palate. In 1995, Parker became the first American in the wine field to receive La Croix du Chevalier de l'Ordre Nationale du Mérite (The Cross of the Knight of the National Order of Merit), one of France's two highest honors, conferred on him directly by President François Mitterrand. In 1998, he won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional. Clearly, it can be said that Robert Parker is America's foremost wine professional.

With this third edition of the classic that launched him, Parker strives to maintain his unprecedented independence, objectivity, clarity, and enthusiasm in reporting on the vintages of Bordeaux and provides the prodigious comprehensiveness for which he is known. Not only has he added tastings for the vintages in the intervening years between this and the last edition but he has also retasted and reevaluated many earlier vintages. His accessible and direct style welcomes both the seasoned wine collector and the eager beginner to the pleasures of fine wine and France's most illustrious châteaux.

Organized by appellation, Bordeaux moves alphabetically from one producer to the next, providing essential information and an overview of the property and its owners, listing each vintage, and including numerical ratings and detailed tasting notes of most of that chateau's wines for the past thirty-seven years. At the end of each tasting note, Parker estimates the "anticipated maturity" -- the range of time when the wine should peak in flavor and balance -- and each entry concludes with a summary of the chateau's older vintages. Throughout these extensive commentaries and tasting notes, there is never a doubt that this is the most complete consumer's guide to the wines of Bordeaux ever written.

Who is making Bordeaux's best and worst wines? What has a specific château's track record been over the last thirty or forty years? What châteaux are overrated and overpriced? Which are underrated or underpriced? Always with an eye toward the consumer, Parker distinguishes true value from perceived value.

While the bulk of the book is given over to these ratings, the opening and closing chapters of the book provide readers with a true sense of the changes in the region and its vintages. Such critical issues as: Who most influences winemaking styles?, What role does technology play in modern wine production?, and What impact do second labels have on the quality of the first? are tackled here. Parker also lovingly describes the growing conditions in the region year by year, spending considerable time discussing the 1995 vintage, which he terms "the most consistently top-notch vintage since 1990." In addition to this, Parker reassesses the Bordeaux Classifications, the effects of the soil on the grapes, and the different winemaking processes. He then rounds out this incredible volume with a User's Guide to Bordeaux Wines, practical travel and dining information for wine-touring trips, a complete glossary of terminology, and a quick reference index of the entire book.

As the first book to discuss the 1995, 1996, and 1997 vintages in detail -- vintages that are being hailed as the Best of the Century -- the third edition of Bordeaux is the best tool to use in making both purchasing and consuming decisions. From the wine writer The Sunday Times (London) calls "the world's most experienced and trustworthy palate," Bordeaux provides all the information today's consumer needs in order to select the perfect bottle.

5 out of 5 stars The best wine book.......2001-09-07

I consider this to be by far the best book on Bordeaux. While I do not agree with Parker or just about anyone else regarding the rating of Italian wines, Parker is right on target in his ratings for Bordeaux. I find it interesting that Parker is a fan of the rich and opulent micro wines coming out of Pomerol and St. Emilion. There are strict Bordeaux traditionalists that don't care for these wines. I think they are great and agree with Parker. They simply add another dimension to the many styles of wine being made in the greatest wine producing area of the world. Parker is extremely consistent and the only other taster that comes close is Stephen Tanzer. The Wine Spectator and James Suckling are pretty good, although I think they overrate too many wines in subpar vintages. Ironically, Spectator is not a big fan of the decadent wines Parker likes from the right bank.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Bordeaux guide.......2000-10-06

One reviewer noted that this really comes closer to a buying guide than anything else. I suppose that is true, but it is much more, also. It is easy enough to write histories of Bordeaux, and many are very entertaining, such as D. Markham's work on the 1855 Classification. But when most of us pick up a recent Bordeaux work, isn't it more helpful to hear more than "Chateau Lafite is a first growth and has produced good to excellent wine in x, y and z vintages, and many others." This is a book that takes a stand. And quite frankly, Parker's Bordeaux palate is as good as anyone's in the world. You don't have to agree with everything he says on every wine to recognize a master at work.

4 out of 5 stars Informative but not the Gospel.......2000-01-22

This book is comprehensive and informative and should be added to the library of any serious wine lover. However, it is important to bear in mind that Robert Parker has very definite views on what a great Bordeaux wine should be! Wine, of course, is very much like art - the beauty is in the eye of the beholder! It goes without saying that if you enjoy your wines black and tannic and undrinkable for the first 15 years then Robert Parkers famous points system is for you! It is probably better to ignore his points system altogether as a wine with 85 points could well be vastly superior to a wine with 95 points , depending on whether you are looking for elegance rather than inky blackness. It is also worth noting that wines such as "Cantemerle" are sometimes penalized by Parker for being light coloured and elegant rather than a blockbuster heavy wine (such as Latour). Hachette produces a much better wine guide which presents a more balanced view on wine appreciation. It helps undo the damage which is rife in America - many wine consumers feel obliged to serve only wines with 90+ points , thereby missing out on an ocean of extemely delicious and elegant wines which Parker only rates with 85 points.

                      Good drinking!

                      5 out of 5 stars Bordeaux.......1999-11-28

A thoroughly comprehensive work, seemingly the definitive current description of all Bordeaux's. More than just a frank rating by one of the world's wine experts, as Parker shares facts and opinions about the various chateaus and their progress, ups and downs, in producing fine wines. This is certainly an encyclopedic effort, and one truly feels that each and every chateau and its wine have been described in considerable detail. Someone not familiar with Parker might find it interesting that his ratings are often quoted in wine publications and at auctions to give readers somewhat of a guide as to the quality of an individual wine. This is not a book that rates all old wines. Parker tends to rate still drinkable old wines, and does go back, in many cases to the 60's, in a chronological order. He also has notes about "superb" ancient vintages, that goes beyond the chronological listings.

4 out of 5 stars The only real guide to Bordeaux.......1999-05-10

Comprehensive and generally trustworthy information. A critical analysis, from the standpoint of a wine buyer like myself should not dissuade anyone from getting this useful and professional guide. The way Parker evaluates wine is not fool proof- but he is right 95% of the time. That in itself makes him better than almost any peers considering the sheer volume of juice he tastes. For the initated and value seeking with a professional slant, it would be nice if Mr. Parker would spend more time looking at Entre deux Mers for both red and white. Professionalism and compentency has increased there and it is not the land of co-op's and swill that it once was. Also, I would like to see more attention paid to petit chx. But then again, the sheer fact that they are not in his book keeps the price down for some of my best petit estates. There are also some worthy Lalande de Pomerol and Castillion sites he has not caught onto or he omits for lack of consistancy. I'd like him to thicken the book up with a bit of this and less on what we know is great (Clasified Growth top stuff) One thing, Cru Classe wines are bad too sometimes and Parker pulls no punches when they ship out a real looser. He can find you relative bargains, like Chx Tayac in Bourg (had 82 in mag last week- fantastic). So get the book if you want to know anything about Bordeaux. Robert Parker has kind of been black listed in Burgundy- this is too bad. He knows his stuff and some minor discrepancies should be overlooked. Cant wait for a Parker / Rovani Burgundy to be released.

                      Book Description

Wine drinkers around the world refer to Robert M. Parker, Jr.'s Bordeaux simply as "The Bible."

First published in 1985, this landmark consumer guide launched one of the most illustrious careers in wine criticism. Robert Parker's mission, in his newsletter The Wine Advocate and his many bestselling books, has always been to give wine drinkers honest, informed advice about which wines are worth their money, and which wines aren't.

The fourth edition of Bordeaux presents a complete guide to vintages between 1961 and 2001. This latest volume brings readers up-to-date on the abundance of new producers in France's most important wine region and for the first time includes more than 700 wine labels. Parker has retasted and reevaluated many of Bordeaux's finest wines -- and adjusted their ratings accordingly -- so readers of his previous editions will discover herein a wealth of new material.

Parker begins with an overview of each year, which includes insight into growing conditions and yields, notes on anticipated maturity, general price ranges, and lists of best wines. The heart of the book is the chapter "Evaluating the Wines of Bordeaux," in which he meticulously reviews wine producers of every appellation. Organized geographically, the chateaux are listed in alphabetical order, and entries include contact information, vineyard size, details about the wine-making style, and a general evaluation of the chateau's wines. Best of all, each entry includes extensive tasting notes on important vintages, all of them featuring Parker's celebrated rating system -- in which every wine is assessed on a scale ranging from 50 to 100. In later chapters, he also offers essential information about the elements of a great Bordeaux wine, practical travel information about the region, a glossary of wine terms, and more.

An invaluable guide for consumers, Robert M. Parker, Jr.'s Bordeaux provides all the information amateurs and connoisseurs alike could possibly need in their search for that perfect bottle.

Recently I toured wineries in Bordeaux. Robert Parker's book is the indispensable guide to wineries in that region. He discusses each estate in detail and is quite frank in his reviews. He also recommended some hotels and restaurants, which proved to be excellent recommendations.

What a book!! Everything you wanted to know about Bordeaux and more. A comprehnesive and stunning, detailed account of the major chateaux in Bordeaux (there are hundreds of them!!)

Detailed tasting notes, going back many vintages. it is an excellent reference guide on the wines in this area.

You just have to think "the lucky so and so"; getting to taste the great wines and the great vintages of this region. To be honest you have to marvel about how he manages to do it.

This is an excellent guide; this edition has included pictures of the labels with each Chateau that is reviewed. One might hope that a future edition would have them in colour rather than B&W. A minor carp!!

Parker's insight is penetrating, but he manages to maintain an epic perspective. Parker's passion for wine vertibly sparkles from every page. His views can be idiosyncratic and he is not afraid to critisized grand crus which no longer merit the title. But only a scholar with Parker's passion could amass this comprehensive resource. This book is full of history, reviews, vintage analysis and ratings of all the chateaux, whether grand cru classe or cru bourgeois. If you are casually interested in wine or not ready to start spending big money, then this will be too much information. Let's face it: Good Bordeaux is expensive, and the shear volume of Parker's resources will overwhelm the uncommitted. But if you are willing to invest the time and money, you could not start at a better place than Robert Parker's Bordeaux.
