RAF Gibraltar.......2006-03-19
A fine picture book for aeroplane buffs, but sadly lacking as a history of the Royal Air Force in Gibraltar. The four page introduction could well have been extended, albeit at the loss of some photographs.

Skinner: The Humanist Behind The Behaviorist.......2007-08-24
The how's, why's, when's, and where's of a forged life are depicted beautifully in the biography of a scholar and scientist that dared question our penchant to attribute our so-called "success" to our will and dignity. Skinner is portrayed as a human being who readily recognized that his success was indeed accidental. Skinner is real, geniune, and too much for the ordinary mind to handle.
The Biography Box.......2004-02-18
This is the best biography I've read. I certainly find Skinner interesting, but what's impressive is how well this book flows, and I expect that's due to Bjork's writing skills and understanding of Skinner.
I came to this book because I don't know much about Skinner. I can't vouch for its accuracy or slant but it seems very professional, with plenty of references. I feel lucky to have started here. I've been reading other books on Skinner and Radical Behaviorism and appreciate the background Bjork has given me. There's a smooth mix of detail and overview.
Although there's plenty of material to help to understand Skinner the scientist and philosopher, there is also a good amount for feeling one has learned about Skinner the man, a dutiful husband, warm father, and, despite some isolation that his advanced thinking brought him, a decent friend. Seeing this side of Skinner provides good reason not to jump at labelling him a reductionist. I also learned to admire his faithfulness, despite popular opposition, to pushing forward to scientifically study how conditioning impacts us (and how we use and can better use conditioning to our own advantage).
While I'll be reading Skinner, I'd also like to read more of Bjork. If I were a famous thinker, Bjork is someone I'd like to have write my biography.
Insight to Skinner.......2002-01-15
This is a good primer of Skinner's life. It provides clarification regarding the origin of Skinner's ideas and charts the course of his personal and intellectual development through his career.
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating book potentially useful for everyone.......2000-08-16
Whatever you think of behaviorism, or Skinner's other works, this book is an admirable effort, and his approach to old age can be profitably adapted by those of any age. Skinner takes a clear-eyed look at how to alter one's environment -- one's home, one's habits, developed over a lifetime but often suboptimal for the person one has become -- to minimize inconveniences and maximize enjoyment.
I first read this book in my early 20s, and I was profoundly struck by Skinner's pragmatic assessment of his circumstances and his focus on making positive steps to improve his life.
[Incidentally, I shared an elevator ride with Skinner around the time this book came out (before I had read it) -- we didn't talk, but he scowled at me.]
A wonderful finishing touch to B. F. Skinner's career.......1997-08-24
When he was almost 80 years old Skinner, the creator of behaviourism, decided to share with us his wisdom about old age.
This is a very useful book for people approaching old age, or for those who have to deal with old people.

Surprisingly Appealing Practical Tips for Living as One Ages from The Great Behaviorist.......2005-12-17
This is a surprisingly practical guide to living from the great behavioral psychologist, B.F. Skinner and a young co-author. A lifetime of careful observation of the behavior of humans and other animals gave him a great deal of insight into the practical difficulties of dealing with whatever subset of the infirmities of age may beset one. He relentlessly applies the behaviorist "ABC" [antecedent (setting) / behavior (action) / consequences] model to many challenges of daily life and comes up with refreshingly honest, direct, even bold, solutions. Many libraries probably have a copy on their shelves. But, once you read it, you may want to have one on your nightstand, next to your pen-light, notepad, and pencil. You may want to give it to some of your more whiney aging friends and acquaintances, too.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Book!.......2007-04-03
I love this book. I've never read any other "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books before, but this one caught my eye. I absolutely relate to the 7 essential ingredients for a balanced life. I also found the quotes in each section to be really meaningful. If you're a stressed out woman, trying to figure out what happened, this book will help you explore your needs, thoughts and feelings.
Add heaping handfuls of caring, love and charity--serves all.......2004-04-18
This book is in the format of the beloved "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series and consists of stories from the lives of women; women who work on the PTA, women who have an extraordinary child named Joel who makes flag safety pins for everyone in the post office after the anthrax scare moved him to action. And also women who have had to stay calm while removing handfuls of peanut butter from the cat or toilet seat. There is a check list about life and what you really want from it--a helpful exercise for anyone to sit down and take stock of things that matter. This is a perfect Mother's Day or birthday or anniversary gift for any woman on your list. And a fun read, too. Enjoy.
Life's Lessons Dor Women: 7 Essential Ingredients for a bala.......2004-04-15
I love this book. As always the Chicken Soup stories are wonderful and in
this new book they perfectly relate to each topic they introduce. But
what's incredible about Life Lessons for Women is that it presents a simple,
do-able plan to simplify and enrich your life. Somehow Marston
makes you feel as if this is the book you'll truly incorporate into your
life. The vision of what your life will become is believable. Looking at
issues like "Recognize What's Important" and making a "Top Ten Values You
Use to Define Yourself" and evaluating whether they are reflected in your
everyday life immediately changes your perspective and gives you the
nudge needed to rearrange priorities. Through reading this book,
you will give yourself permission to put yourself at the top of your "to do
list." This is a well-balanced, complete guide for changing your life,
presented in a way that you can immediately start applying it and reap the
benefits from the get go. A must for anyone from a stressed-out professional
to a frazzled mom!
Hotter and More Nurturing than Chicken Soup.......2004-04-14
Listen, I'm not your average Chicken Soup reader. (The books are fine. They're just not my particular cup of...tea, soup, or what have you.) But I have two other wonderful books by Marston on my shelf, namely her parenting book, "The Magic of Encouragement," and her book for midlife women, "If Not Now When,"---both of which I love and return to often. So, on impulse, I picked up Marston's Chicken Soup/Life Lessons book last night, and I'm already a happy grrrllll as a result. (A good self-help book that's also fun to read is truly a thing of beauty---and all too rare.)
Okay, opening at random, page 201, "Create a Passion Kit," to bring "a sense of joy, creativity and playfulness back in your life.." Hey, which one of us wouldn't benefit from a little of that?! (And the book is packed with delightful stories to illustrate Marston's suggestions.)
Page 194: "It's time to be outrageous. What do you have to lose?" What indeed?
In short, it's a smart, charming, useful, extremely entertaining book. Buy it. You won't be sorry. I'm here on Amazon because I'm planning to buy a few more copies as gifts for friends.
No Regrets.......2004-04-14
I've been reading self help books for 25 years but this one is the one that changed my life. The stories combined with practical tools and exercises helped me to make the changes I've wanted to make forever, but simply couldn't until this book.
I've always tried to be what you OTHERS wanted me to be. That is a lot of work, and not very satisfying. The *Questions Worth Asking* were wonderful. The one that really made me stop and think was: When I'm 80, what will I regret having done or not done? My answer, which shocked me -- was to dance. So, at the magic age of 45, I started salsa classes, and I'm having the time of my life!
This book taught me how to be fearless and how to live my dreams. Thank you, Stephanie!

Customer Reviews:
my favorite vegan cookbook.......2006-08-02
This book doesn't say "vegan" anywhere on it, and I myself am not vegan (just a vegetarian for now), but I feel like I could be vegan based on this cookbook. Oser gives a great, not-too-lengthy but informative introduction to using soy, with a complete list of "unusual" ingredients and where to get them, as well as a conversion chart. The recipes are great -- easy to make and delicious! She has a fantastic mix of foods, but my VERY favorite thing about this book is all the "comfort foods" she includes. There's an AWESOME recipe for shepherd's pie, for example, that is filling and tasty and makes you not miss meat at all. This book also has the hands-down BEST vegan chocolate cake recipe I have ever eaten. I recommend this book to both new and veteran vegan/vegetarian cooks. You will not be disappointed.
At yeast it tastes good?.......2004-03-07
I have been an ardent vegan for nearly 2 years, and this book nearly made me go and buy a McDonald's hamburger. The recipes I have tried had ingredients that were expensive, difficult to find or both. The finished dishes were not appealing to any of the senses, and had a horrible aftertaste. The aftertaste may have been attributed to the massive amounts of nutritional yeast and miso required by many dishes. After the third time I tried to make a meal using recipes in this book, I threw it out (and almost threw up). I did not want this book to go to Goodwill or Salvation Army and continue the legacy of horrible vegan cooking. There are good vegan cookbooks out there, try again. IF YOU MUST TRY THIS BOOK AVOID: Quiche Lorraine, Brussels Sprouts with Chestnuts and Creamed Artichoke Hearts. All will break your vegetarian/vegan spirit, and scar you for life.
Best Soy Recipes I've Ever Tasted.......2003-05-02
I give this 4 stars, only because some of the ingredients are not typical pantry stock and many of the recipes are labor intensive. However, they are "delicious" and filled with nutritional balance. The quantities are large, so often, I will freeze recipes. Also, I've found that if I don't have all the ingredients like mushroom powder or nutritional yeast, the recipe is still very good. Thank you, Marie Oser, for taking the time to test and balance healthy recipes that are worth making.
Delicious Meals and Desserts!.......2003-03-08
I bought this cookbook after about 6 months of being on a diet recommended by my naturopathic doctor. I was told to avoid meat, dairy and sugar. I had been doing o.k. with one of the Moosewood Restaurant books, but was looking for more variety. When I first started looking at the recipes in here, I was a little nervous, being "cooking-challenged". There were a number of ingredients I had never heard of! But there is a glossary in the front that explains what the ingredients are and where you can find them. Also a good techniques section, which helped me a lot in preparing tofu. And now having made several of the recipes and being amazed when they are finished (they actually look like something I'd get at a restaurant), I'm not so daunted anymore. They are really fairly easy to make and don't take as much time as you might think from reading the ingredient list. The desserts are great, and believe me, I was addicted to sugar! But these recipes use evaporated cane juice, which you can find at the health food store, and are very tasty! I especially like the chocolate chip cookies and the brownies! I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to make a change to a healthier diet!
