Book Description
In this marvelously researched and moving biography closely grounded in Frieda Fromm-Reichmann's work, Gail Hornstein brings back to life the maverick psychiatrist who accomplished what Freud and almost everyone else thought impossible: successfully treating schizophrenics and other seriously disturbed mental patients with intensive psychotherapy, not lobotomy, shock treatment, or drugs.
To Redeem One Person Is to Redeem the World tells the extraordinary life story of the German-Jewish refugee analyst, who was the first wife of Erich Fromm. Written with unprecedented access to a rich archive of Frieda Fromm-Reichmann's clinical work at the legendary Chestnut Lodge Hospital in Rockville, Maryland, and using newly discovered family records and documents from across Europe and the United States, this is the definitive biography of a remarkable woman.
Best known to millions as the courageous therapist in I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, Joanne Greenberg's bestselling chronicle of madness and recovery, Fromm-Reichmann (1889-1957) is a fascinating and controversial figure in twentieth-century psychiatry. To Redeem One Person Is to Redeem the World traces the story of her life and education, from a loving childhood as the eldest of three daughters in an Orthodox Jewish family to medical school at seventeen, as one of the first women admitted to study at a Prussian university.
During World War I, Fromm-Reichmann took charge of a military hospital in Königsberg, transforming it into a pioneering center for the treatment of brain injury. By her mid-thirties, she had opened her own psychiatric sanitarium in Heidelberg, where she and her staff put into practice a unique and hopeful integration of psychotherapy and tikkun, the Jewish ethical principle that every person is worth saving. At thirty-six, she had an affair with and then married her patient, Erich Fromm, later the celebrated author of Escape from Freedom, The Art of Loving, and other psychological classics. Her close friends and colleagues in pre-World War II Germany included some of the most visionary intellectuals and therapists of the era: Martin Buber, Karen Horney, Franz Rosenzweig, Gershom Scholem, and Georg Groddeck, among others.
Hornstein recounts Fromm-Reichmann's dramatic escape from Nazi Germany, exile in France and Palestine, and her flight to the United States, where she found asylum at a tiny hospital outside Washington, D.C. Over the following decades, Fromm-Reichmann would emerge as the most distinguished figure at Chestnut Lodge, a mental hospital unlike any other -- intellectually radical, yet filled with warm family feeling and deeply respectful of individual difference. Fromm-Reichmann was not only pivotal in creating a beacon of hope at Chestnut Lodge, which stood alone as the place where the sickest patients could go to be cured. She was also a maverick in her field -- the only prominent woman analyst of her day to write about schizophrenia, not femininity or children. And she had little interest in the arcane theoretical disputes that obsessed most of her colleagues; curing patients was her consuming goal.
As the pendulum swings back from psychiatry's addiction to drugs as the sole treatment for mental illness, Fromm-Reichmann's breadth of vision makes this biography of a heroic, yet all-too-human, woman a timely and compelling work.

Best known to millions as the courageous therapist in Joanne Greenberg's chronicle of madness and recovery, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, Frieda Fromm-Reichmann (1889-1957) is a fascinating and controversial figure. She is credited with accomplishing what Freud thought impossible: successfully treating psychotics and schizophrenics with intensive psychotherapy, not drugs. Numerous researchers have attempted to study her life but, the dearth of records and personal effects thwarted each attempt to penetrate the myth. Now Gail Hornstein's relentless, ten-year pursuit of every trace of Fromm-Reichmann's life has culminated in the long-awaited liberation of the actual facts and history from the fictionalized doctor in...Rose Garden. Using these newly discovered family records and a rich archive of tape-recorded sessions with patients, Hornstein illuminates a fascinating life. Fromm-Reichmann, born into an Orthodox German Jewish family, believed that every person is worth saving. The story of her education and early psychiatric practice, her complex marriage to Erich Fromm (the celebrated author of The Art of Loving), her dramatic escape from Nazi Germany, and her intense relationships and rivalries with major psychoanalysts makes for truly compelling reading.
Customer Reviews:
Terrible.......2007-07-17
The writer simply cannot write prose. Her attempt at metaphors are terribly jarring. I have never come across a published writer who was so bad.
Terribly disappointing as I love Frieda Fromm-Reichmann and have read her work with fascination and joy.
Too dark.......2006-02-19
I found this book way too depressing. The author seemed to make a point that Dr. Frieda was not the saint she apeared to be in the famous book from Greenburg. In every sentence, it was reaking with some pessimistic streak, even in the depictions of the many photos I found fascinated by. I love Greenburg's book dearly, and to just know such a person as Dr. Fried existed was enough to give light to this world. I think the author of this book should have mentioned more of the fact that Friada did accomplish an enourmous amount... It was awful how the author refrained Frieda's untimely death over and over and over again, as if her life had a sad fate, despite all that she strived for. Even her work with the real Johanna Greenburg is underminded, immediately followed by a whole chapter about a patient she was unsuccessful to reach out.
Not recommended, although it is the only existing book I know about her, and I rushed to the library to get it as soon as I knew it was out. Too bad.
Great!.......2001-08-07
the author gave insight into the politics of the mental health field, from the philosopy of running private and public institutions to the competition between psychoanalysts, and competition beween the differant professions. From Reichman's story is written in the context of world history and the history and development of mental health treatment in the U.S.. All this plus the Freida Fromm-Reichman's philosopy and approach to analysis. The author provides a rich portrait embracing both the strengths and weaknesses of Fromm-Reichmann
IF YOU'VE READ "ROSE GARDEN," YOU'LL WANT TO READ THIS..........2001-01-19
This is a fascinating, well-written, well-researched biography of the psychotherapist who cured Deborah Blau, the patient in the best selling novel, I Never Promised you a Rose Garden (c1977). Even recent reviews of "Rose Garden" indicate confusion about Hannah Green (a pseudonym) and Joanne Greenberg (the author of this autobiographically-based novel). This book straightens it all out while exploring the fascinating life of Frieda Fromm-Reichmann.

Customer Reviews:
what happened to my review.......2002-06-14
i wrote a review of this book explaining that part of the book was very out of date, about 2 weeks ago. can you advise why it was not used?
thanks, Peter McKeone.
Every good diving library must have a copy.......1999-04-22
Despite being roughly a decade old, John's "Bible" of diving remains quite relevant on basic issues of dive theory, narcosis symptoms and other real "nuts-n-bolts" stuff. Granted, diving has progressed into mixed gas, dive computers and rebreathers, but much of these fields are still changing so rapidly that nothing in print is truely up to date. This is an essential reference to help understand diving...all 600+ pages of it.
Detailed info on dive physiology & decompression theory.......1997-04-03
This book by one of the most published authorities covers scuba and free diving physics, physiology, decompression theory in depth, and has sections on deep diving, etc. It's an excellent source and a "must read" for advanced divers, divemasters & dive instructors. The book has detailed references, and is very impartial in tone. Some sections (such as constantly changing dive computers) are getting a little bit outdated as of 4/97

Aqua Fitness.......2007-03-19
I would like to have had more detailed instructions for the exercises shown. Although you have pictures of the exercises I found that I needed to have more information on them.
Illustrased water exercises.......2006-07-21
Good book with excellent descriptions of exercises and great photographs to demonsrate correct form.
Aqua fitness.......2006-06-15
This is an excellent book with great pictures and excellent descriptions of the exercises. I make my own audiotapes to play while I work out in the pool later. It was easy to just read from her descriptions to know how to do the exercise later when I was in the pool. Clear and succinct. Very good book.
An excellent aqua guide.......2004-05-08
An excellent source of information on the benefits of aqua fitness workouts. It includes important dos & don'ts to guide you in finding the correct instruction. Aqua fitness -- which includes such diverse activities as swimming, aqua aerobics, deep water running and hydrostatic stretching -- is an increasingly popular way of keeping fit. It is suited to people of all ages and all fitness levels, including those who have impaired movement or are undergoing rehabilitation. It has tremendous advantages over exercising on land: it's low impact, reducing the risk of injury; water has a cooling effect, so the body is less likely to overheat; and it's so much fun, it's hard to believe you are working out!
Aqua Fitness is a book for everyone -- from professional fitness instructors wishing to learn how to instruct their clients to people who want to know how to use their backyard or local swimming pool to keep fit. It is filled with information on:
aqua fitness facilities and equipment
specific exercises with accompanying diagrams
how to program an exercise session
safety and first aid considerations
legal issues for instructors who wish to offer aqua fitness classes
as well details on the pool itself, such as ideal depth and water temperature. A useful list of contacts has also been included at the back of the book.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Review in Need of Some Updating.......2004-02-03
This is an excellent review and rating of the world of spirits hitting all of the major brands and types of spirits. There is nothing out there quite like it, and would easily garner 5 stars from me simply for having such a variety of listings and ratings if it were fully up-to-date with their reviews (www.tastings.com). You will find that your tastes likely diverge from their ratings, but they do offer some excellent advice nonetheless. They rate the drinks on a 100 point scale, and anything above about 85 will likley be a good choice for sampling or buying.
Having said that, you should keep in mind that in the liquor world, things are always changing, new brands or bottlings are being introduced or discontinued, formulas are being altered, prices fluctuate (usually upwards in the realm of premium spirits!) and indeed the taste of the reviewers are changing as well. If you look at the societies website, you will see with their latest up-to-date ratings, some spirits have risen and others fallen. In some cases, if they were to update the book with a new edition, the ratings lists would look very different. The example of American Bourbons show almost all of the above 90 spirits have fallen to high 80's and low 90's on the website - which appears to me to be mostly the addition of a bunch of new high quality entries requiring a re-scaling rather than indications of a fall in quality.
Still, this is an excellent starting point, and a good example of what should br a periodic publication from the BTI!
A Great Little Rating Book.......2000-09-25
This is a great book that gives one ratings on all the world's major classes of spirits. It has a section that describes each type of spirit. Whiskies, Brandies, Rums, Vodkas, Gins, Tequilas, Liqueurs and fortified wines such as Port are covered. It covers spirits from the more inexpensive schnapps popular with the college crowd to the very pricey Scotchs and Cognacs. It rates each by a number and has tasting notes. An excellent way to choose, taste and expand ones knowledge of the world's spirits. While one may not agree with each rating, they seem to generally be in line with other guides. Remember, preferences are a matter of taste. Not everyone prefers the same things. This book is a great way to experiment.
