Book Description

What you see is not always what you get - and this true story of a man and his dog is no exception. Woven just under the surface of this simple parable, Keller presents profound spiritual truth. It is the story of Lass, a worthless animal thought to be untrainable, who becomes a magnificent and valuable sheepdog - not terribly unlike how God's love can transform our worst characteristics into blessings that serve to further His Kingdom. Allow yourself to see Biblical truth in this classic tale of what can happen when you yield to the Master.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Books / Excellent Buy.......2007-09-28

Loved this book - a wonderful story of Love through the eyes of a shepherd. Lass is a sheepdog who is abused and unloved. Her transformation when she is loved by her master is a picture of our transformation when we receive God's (our master's) love.

The write ups were misleading. I bought this book for my grandson, only to find it contained Christian propaganda. "Obey the Master's voice" ??? please...

5 out of 5 stars Engaging, light read - recommend for all.......2006-10-09

This book is warm story that shows the relationship of trust and loyalty built between an abused dog and his new owner. I highly recommend it to any and all.

Worthy of a re-read from time to time. Among other messages, a gentle reminder of the spirit of service we are all meant to demonstrate!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for dog lovers.......2006-07-09

I gave this book to a friend for her birthday. She has a dog just like Lass and could relate very closely to the author's experiences. She loved the book. I am reading it now and agree completely. Great book for any dog lover.

Be sure to get this little book to go with "A shepherd looks at psalm 23". It will open you eyes to your relationship with our good shepherd and it may put you to shame as to how willing are you to follow His call.

    Book Description

From frosted mountain peaks to the low-lying farmlands of the Fraser Valley, from the Sahara-like sand dunes of Farwell Canyon to the dripping, moss-bedecked rainforests of the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia is a province of startling contrasts. Its beauty has inspired many photo collections, but none quite like David Nunuk's.

Natural Light is a spectacular, jaw-dropping collection of Nunuk's best photographs of British Columbia in all its moods, accompanied by his often wry observations about the settings and his unorthodox methods of capturing them. In the tradition of Wade Davis, Nunuk writes about his experience hiking into an area, planning a shot and digging in patiently until the light and weather co-operate to make the perfect picture. He becomes intimate with the subtle variants in a landscape over an hour, a day, a month or a minute before he captures the images with his camera. His pictures are composed with a naturalist's eye for scientific detail and an outdoorsman's affection and respect for nature.

From the warm Mediterranean tones of an Okanagan vineyard to the crystalline twinkle of an ice cave, the striking radiance of Natural Light makes this luxuriously produced, oversize coffee-table book the perfect gift for lovers of outdoor photography, naturalists, armchair travellers or anyone who wants to see BC in a dramatic new--and entirely natural--light.

    Book Description

A tale of obsession so fierce that a man kills the thing he loves most: the only giant golden spruce on earth. "Absolutely spellbinding."—William Grimes, New York Times

As vividly as Jon Krakauer put readers on Everest, John Vaillant takes us into the heart of North America's last great forest, where trees grow to eighteen feet in diameter, sunlight never touches the ground, and the chainsaws are always at work.

When a shattered kayak and camping gear are found on an uninhabited island, they reignite a mystery surrounding a shocking act of protest. Five months earlier, logger-turned-activist Grant Hadwin had plunged naked into a river in British Columbia's Queen Charlotte Islands, towing a chainsaw. When his night's work was done, a unique Sitka spruce, 165 feet tall and covered with luminous golden needles, teetered on its stump. Two days later it fell.

The tree, a fascinating puzzle to scientists, was sacred to the Haida, a fierce seafaring tribe based in the Queen Charlottes. Vaillant recounts the bloody history of the Haida and the early fur trade, and provides harrowing details of the logging industry, whose omnivorous violence would claim both Hadwin and the golden spruce. 16 pages of illustrations.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant book.......2007-08-14

The Pacific Northwest is one of history and beauty, as told here it is also one of violence and savagry. The brilliant narrative tells the story of a mythis tree in the Canadian Galapagos. John Vaillant explains in true outdoorsmen style(Into the Wild) how Grant Hadwin came to cut down the Golden Spruce, a semi-mythic survivor, a massive tree.

But this is not just a murder, this is an act of protest by a man who loves the forest and hates what man has done to it, the coprorations, the government, everyone. He is a latter-day Edward Abbey, in the spirit of Crazy Horse and the Monkey Wrench Gang. The Monkey Wrench Gang (P.S.).

The history is as brilliant as the story. The author also describes the rich evology of the Northwest Coastal forest of British Columbis. The Queen Charlotte Islands are also home to the Haida Gwaii, a native people. For them the Spruce was K'iid K'iyaas, as Everest is Sagarmatha to the Sherpas.
Hadwin was a woodcutter and road builder, a man who also loved nature. But as in 'Into the Wild' he left his family and went mad, and committed a great crime.

    A brilliant read.

I checked this book out of local public library because I am interested
in the subject. Never did I expect such fine, concise, and insightful--
not to mention lucid and expressive --writing! Mister Vaillant is
a joy to read... even though the subject is so depressing. He somehow
managed to bring the great American Northwest and the great Canadian
Southwest into vivid, living perspective for me! Thanks, John.

1 out of 5 stars Potential Reference Document - Not a Structured Read.......2007-04-10

This book tried to force a story line in where there was not one to be had. The structure of the book was impossible to follow and there was no flow whatsoever. Before finishing the first chapter, I was skipping paragraphs and a third of the way through the book I was skimming through chapters. If this book had removed the choppy story line about Hadwin, hired a competent editor and then included a complete index, you would have a solid reference document about the natural and cultural history of the Queen Charlotte Islands. Instead you have a longwinded, well referenced mess. I just finished reading a book about the history of the Dust Bowl "The worse hard time". Now you would think, here is a subject that just could not be made interesting, but the power of a good writer made the book both interesting, informative, and just an overall enjoyable read. In ending - Let me save you some money and summarize the whole book for you - The Pacific Northwest has been deforested, local native people of the region are rich in culture, some nutcase cuts down a Sitka spruce with golden needles because he wants to stop deforestation (what? - don't bother asking why because you will not get the answer), and environmentalist are all good.

4 out of 5 stars The Golden Boy - Vailant.......2007-02-23

Golden Spruce, by John Vaillant, is a book about many things. It is quite a few history and biology lessons, an example of how people can be driven to want to destroy something they love, and a damnned good story - all at the same time. The last book that I can think of that I thought I was reading for a good story and not only got the story but ended up knowing a lot more about nature and my own self in the process was Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver. Vailant was praised in reviews by authors who have a lot of nature cred (get it? Not street cred, nature cred - I think it is funny...), such as Sebastian Junger and his storytelling was compared to John Krakauer.
Vailant's primary theme throughout the book seems to be pain. He argues that humans can cause themselves less in the long run by aiming towards sustainability and living off the resources available to them at the time rather than depleting what is around them for export and profit. The context of this message in Vailant's book is timber, but can be applied to a broader range when the reader starts to think about the moral dillemas that Vailant describes loggers and the Haiida face.
What stood out most in Vailant's book is the imagry. As a native Northerwestern myself I often times wanted to put down the book and go for a walk in the woods. There is passage in the begining of the book that I sent to a friend of mine who is now living in Europe because I knew when she read it she could be standing in a patch of Oregon old growth.
Little of the book focuses on Grant Hadwin, the man who fell the Golden Spruce. What is mentioned of him gives the reader a sight of a man determined, perhaps mentally ill, and with a passionate yet skewed cause. He is compared to Timothy McVeigh.
Vailant's research into multiple disciplines makes for a comprehensive picture of the dense Pacific Northwest. Readers are schooled in botany, marine biology and climatology - all in the context of the story being told. Never did it feel like a lecture, like a tangent or like Vailant was trying to make his research count for something. It was all relative and helpful to what he was trying to explain to us, which he said best in one sentence towards the end of the book, "Most of us are led to believe that we have more freedom and choice than ever before when in fact we are driven by the real, if short-sighted, demands of our wallets, sophisticated advertisers, increasingly large and powerful conglomerates, and a reactive response to the clock."

3 out of 5 stars Lack of Direction.......2007-01-30

I got this book because the cover said it was like Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. Well, it isn't - in my opinion, not anywhere close to it. Krakauer, for the most part, focused on one main subject / storyline and when he did deviate, his stories were always entertaining. John Vaillant, on the other hand, goes on and on about several different subjects. Now, don't get me wrong - I love to learn about history and facts about people and nature. All of his story lines started out interesting, but got boring and tedious after a while and I even started to get the feeling he was repeating himself. I found the background information about the Haida and Haida Gwaii interesting, but I think it would have better if he had made it shorter and written a seperate book about it instead. I got irritated several times throughout the book because I just wanted him to get back to the main story.

The book just seemed to have no direction and was, in my opinion, just a big mess. It gave the impression that he had done a lot of research and just wanted to give you every single solitary detail and fact that he had read. I felt like I was reading a really long high school book report. He should have focused on the story of the Golden Spruce and given short side stories about logging, the Haida, Haida Gwaii, and Hadwin, where applicable, but left the in depth details for another book.

    Book Description

At the core of this popular guide is "the program" — a 13-week walk/run plan designed to turn anyone into a runner, without injury. Originally developed by sports medicine physicians and refined through three years of clinics and responses from runners, it explains precisely how the beginner should train every day for the first 13 weeks. Every part of the process is covered, from equipment to staying motivated.

New to this edition are sections on training to run faster and farther, interval and tempo training; maintaining fitness on vacation; training for a half and full marathon; and coming back from injuries. A new chapter focuses on running and the family, including running during pregnancy and after the baby arrives, jogging strollers, children who want to run, and running with the family dog. Also included is the latest on nutrition and running, including low-carb diets and other popular diet trends.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Watch the editions!!!.......2007-10-02

Just a note to those that are interested in buying this book. The 13-week run/walk program was completely revised between the 2001 and 2005 editions of the book. The 2001 edition is a much gentler approach, while the 2005 edition assumes that you have a certain level of fitness. Just to illustrate: the very first session of the first week of the 13 week program in the 2005 edition calls for "run 1 minute, walk 2 minutes; do this 12 times" (the 9th time just about killed me), whereas the 2001 edition of the book starts with "run 30 seconds, walk 4 minutes 30 seconds; do this 7 times". So if you're more fit you may be happy with the 2005 edition, otherwise try to find the 2001 or 1999 editions of the book. Otherwise, I liked the book a lot.

4 out of 5 stars An absolutely beginner's guide to...........2007-09-14

...Running! This is a very decent introduction (and also highly motivational) for someone very new to running. In my humble opinion, this is not a book for even someone that is slightly advanced into running. If you are someone that has been into a program and can run 5Ks and want to improve your time or improve breathing skills, this is not the book for you. However, if you are just beginning to run (and want to motivate yourself), then this is a good book. That is the reason why I gave the book 4 stars because it says it is a beginner's runner book. I just assumed that I would find tips such as rythmic breathing or other skills that will help you run better. good luck and keep running because its good for you!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Running!.......2007-09-09

I bought this book two years ago (the 2005 edition) and it gave me the basis I needed to keep running ever since. The book lives up to its title and gives you a practical program for running 60+ minutes by the end, gradually helping you break yourself into it.

I'm puzzled by some of the negative reviews here because it is very much geared for people who have never run or haven't done so in so long they don't know how to begin again. It covers all the basics you'll need to know about stretching, nutrition, injury avoidance and treatment, goal setting, clothing, and crosstraining, and it explains how these are important in relation to your running. It even gives tips on issues like running while pregnant, with a stroller, or how to get your kids involved if you want to try and make running a family affair.

The program itself is great, and while I was always pushing myself (and was even intimidated sometimes looking at what I had to do for my next run), it was never more than I could handle. I found I was so unprepared for running that I had to take an extra "pre-training" week in which I halved the first week's goals, but after that there was never a problem. Additionally, one of my favorite things about the book besides the program is all the little synopses of interviews with different runners that give you a sense of just how diverse they are - young/old, heavy/lean, competitive/recreational - as well as the reasons why they run. You're bound to find yourself identifing with (and being inspired by) some of them!

When I started this program almost two years ago, a minute of running left me winded and beat. Tomorrow I'm running ten miles in preparation for a half-marathon at the end of next month. All told, I'd say it definitely works and I wholeheartedly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Resource for the Beginner.......2007-05-20

In November 2006 I bought 2 books, The Beginning Runner's Handbook by Ian MacNeill, and The Courage to Start by John Bingham. These books changed my life. I was an athlete when I was younger (I played rugby in high school and college, threw the discus and shot put, practiced martial arts, and played competitive softball) and running was always a necessary evil of being part of a sports team. I hated it. I never thought that I would run just to run, and like it. The MacNeill book has a 13-week run-walk plan to go from a coach potato to being able to run a 10k, starting with a lot of walking and working toward mostly running. After the initial 13 weeks, it also has more advanced training plans to maintain your level of fitness, and plans to increase speed, and increase distance. They suggest adding distance very slowly, a little each week (like 10%) to minimize the chances of getting hurt.

When I started I weighed around 300 pounds. Then I started running and eating more sensibly. I've lost 54 pounds, with the hope of getting to my playing weight, which was in the 210-220 range. I am running 3-6 miles three times a week, and hope to be able to build up to more. If I can do this, anyone can. Good luck!

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-05-12

The plans at the back of the book alone are worth buying this book. It's truly catered to the ultimate beginner. It even has a 13 week walk program for those not physically ready to stress their body with jogging yet. I'm not much of an athlete but several years ago I had managed to train hard and learn to run for some training that my job requires. Then, I had knee surgery and decided to sit on the couch too long afterwards! I'm on week 8 of this program and back in the swing of things just fine. I've repeated 2 of the weeks just to give myself time to really build my endurance again- repeating weeks is suggested in the book if you think you need it. The only caution I will put on this book is that it's long on motivational stories and quotes that I just didn't need. I wish it had focused more on health, nutrition, physiology of running and injuries.

    5 out of 5 stars Lovely Book!.......2005-09-11

This book has colorful drawings suggesting gardens [to scale] for all kinds of settings - shade, sun, slopes, corners, and narrow strips, as well as color photos of the plants and suggested varieties of specific species.
Included are directions for supporting structures such as paths and trellises, general plant care, and soil preparation.
It's a thorough book with lots of ideas in an attractive format.

    5 out of 5 stars A surprise, excellent.......2003-06-01

I had low expectations for this when I ordered it. I figured it would be one of those overly general "how to" books that leave out much of the important information. I was surprised to find that it has very specific plans for a variety of garden situations, plans which already show specific groupings of specific plants.

I found this very helpful because I'm not particularly experienced in designing a landscape, nor am I wealthy enough to afford a landscape designer. There is a design for every corner of my new house, tailored to sunlight, etc. I can follow the plans verbatim and end up with a landscape that looks like it was professionally designed, or I can make small changes to personalize it. This is, as the previous reviewer commented, much easier than starting from scratch.

    Definately worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars One Stop Shopping for NW Garden Landscaping.......2002-10-26

THE BACKGROUND: I know next to nothing about plants, and what little I do know is mainly for plants that grow well in the Deep South, where I grew up. I now have a cute house with a remarkably boring yard 2500 miles away from the "Deep South" - in Seattle, to be exact.

THE GOAL: create some nice-looking, *low maintenance* landscaping for the yard, but without having to become an avid amateur gardener, carpenter or landscape designer.

THE TECHNIQUE: as is my style, I go in for complete overkill and immediately buy a dozen books on the subject of landscaping and gardening - must be thorough in my research, you understand. I pour through them, make lists, check with local nurseries, draw detailed plans, etc., and after many hours of work and decision-making, finally decide what to buy and where to plant them.

THE RESULT: 90% of the plants I finally choose as appropriate to the area, low maintenance, and nifty looking, are in this ONE BOOK already, and there were plenty of others in this one book that could have substituted for the remaining 10%. My planting layouts also fairly strongly resemble several of the suggested layouts detailed in this book.

THE LESSON: Should have started and stopped with this one. I coulda fit in tuba lessons or something!

Buy this book, Cascadia gardeners and landscapers! It's what you need! Oh, and it also has tons of useful information on creating walls, fences, gates, paths, garden layouts, pruning, planting, etc.

    VERY highly recommended.

The Burgess Shale of British Columbia "is the most precious and important of all fossil localities," writes Stephen Jay Gould. These 600-million-year-old rocks preserve the soft parts of a collection of animals unlike any other. Just how unlike is the subject of Gould's book.

Gould describes how the Burgess Shale fauna was discovered, reassembled, and analyzed in detail so clear that the reader actually gets some feeling for what paleobiologists do, in the field and in the lab. The many line drawings are unusually beautiful, and now can be compared to a wonderful collection of photographs in Fossils of the Burgess Shale by Derek Briggs, one of Gould's students.

Burgess Shale animals have been called a "paleontological Rorschach test," and not every geologist by any means agrees with Gould's thesis that they represent a "road not taken" in the history of life. Simon Conway Morris, one of the subjects of Wonderful Life, has expressed his disagreement in Crucible of Creation. Wonderful Life was published in 1989, and there has been an explosion of scientific interest in the pre-Cambrian and Cambrian periods, with radical new ideas fighting for dominance. But even though many scientists disagree with Gould about the radical oddity of the Burgess Shale animals, his argument that the history of life is profoundly contingent--as in the movie It's a Wonderful Life, from which this book takes its title--has become more accepted, in theories such as Ward and Brownlee's Rare Earth hypothesis. And Gould's loving, detailed exposition of the labor it took to understand the Burgess Shale remains one of the best explanations of scientific work around. --Mary Ellen Curtin

    Book Description

"Gould has brought to light one of the least known but most spectacular paleontological discoveries of all time….a brilliant tapestry."—Martin Gardner

The Burgess Shale is a small limestone quarry formed 530 million years ago. In it are the remains of an ancient sea that nurtured more varieties of life than can be found in all of our modern oceans. Stephen Jay Gould explores what the Burgess Shale reveals about evolution and the nature of history. 116 illustrations.

I am a fan of science and have enjoyed reading many recent books by great authors like Carl Sagan, Richard Leakey, Tim Flannery, Richard Dawkins and Jared Diamond. For some reason I hadn't had the chance to get around to reading a book by the legendary Stephen Jay Gould. Therefore, when I purchased my copy of his book entitled Wonderful Life: The Burgess Shale and the Nature of History, I was very excited and couldn't wait to read it. I was aware that before Gould's passing he was a promoter of science and that he was well known. However, I must confess I was extremely disappointed by this book. The first few chapters started off quite good, however, as the book progresses into the desciptions of the creatures of the Burgess Shale, I felt it becomes comes quite technical. Also, unlike the previous authors I mentioned, Gould seems to offer little in the way of explanations of some of the biological terminology that he uses in the book. Therefore, I feel that this book may be well suited for a person with a complex understanding of biology or palaeontology, however, it is not well suited for the lay person, or even a person with a slightly better than average understanding of these study areas.

    3 out of 5 stars Not Good.......2007-07-15

This book is quoted so often in the literature that I thought I was going to read something profound. It isn't. Conway Morris and others were right to criticize it. Not sure what all the fuss is about. As a well reasoned argument Gould missed the mark.

5 out of 5 stars Revolution in thinking about evolution.......2007-02-25

Burgess Shale is the most important find ever of remains of early animal life on earth. Stephen Jay Gould explains why, and also why it took almost seventy years before the true significance of this treasure trove began to dawn upon the scientific world. In Gould's view, the 1970's reappraisal of the Burgess Shale fossils represents no less than a Copernical revolution in thinking about the way life on earth has evolved. While this may be, or may not be the case, the tale of how this reappraisal came about is thrillingly and competently told.

As a complete layman in the field of paleontology, I found the insets, explaining the basics and the terminology of the science very helpful. The beautiful drawings by Marianne Collins also helped me a lot to get a feel of what the amazing creatures of Burgess Shale must have been like while living.

The tale of how three British paleontologists, through their work on the fossils, arrived, much to their own surprise, upon conclusions very different from Walcott's (who first discovered Burgess Shale) is a captivating one. Gould's analysis of why Walcott in his time could not possibly have seen his find in it's true light, is something I could have done without.

But then, even if this part holds less interest for me than the main story, were it not for social obligations, I would have finished this book in one sitting!

Heartily recommended for all interested in the history of life on earth.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant prose, science made accessible.......2007-01-10

I feel remiss for not writing a lengthy review of the book, but I hardly have time to do it justice as I go about my work. Instead, I will summarize the major points.

Gould is an exceptional writer who makes science accesible for all readers. I know that this book has drawn new paleontologists into the field, and it definitely encouraged me. It also inspired research programs, numerous books by detractors (e.g., Conway-Morris's "The Crucible of Creation"), which are unfortunately not nearly as well written, and helped popularize the importance of the Cambrian explosion and the lack of understanding of this crucially important time in the history of life. While some of Gould's ideas have since been proved wrong (e.g., he felt that there were more body plans, phyla, represented by Burgess Shale animals than at present but these animals have since been seen to fit into existing phyla), other ideas (e.g., that nearly all phyla arose in the same geological instant) have stood the test of time.

As with all science, the book should be approached critically. Unfortunately, there are few scientists who are able or willing to make their work accessible to the lay person so that all can have an opportunity to understand, enjoy, and contemplate.

I have to say that even though I love food and finding awesome recipes, I rarely use the awesome cookbooks and recipes that I already have. EXCEPT THIS ONE! I can honestly say that I have made and tasted several of Kathy Casey's recipes. I really like that the ingredients are all easy to find in your local, normal grocery store. (B/c I want quality AND a one-stop shop.) I also love the flavors that come from the finished product. Try the crab cakes or endive salad!

    5 out of 5 stars Always beautiful!.......2007-01-08

I just picked up Kathy Casey's new book and I love it. I must admit that I am one of those cooks that needs pictures to entice me to make something and Kathy's cookbooks always have them. Her salad recipes are to die for. So many salads are just so bland, but the Endive salad with Roasted pears is amazing. I'm also a big fan of her French Seasoning salt. I put it on everything!

5 out of 5 stars A perfect blend of the Northwest.......2006-11-29

This beautiful coffee table cookbook has it all; from creative uses of apples and hazelnuts to raspberries and rhubarb (w/honey mousse!). Crab, salmon, muscles, oysters, and halibut all here as well as pork loin, lamb, chicken and duck. And the cocktails and desserts are spot on for our region. As a northwest native and editor of The Good Home Cookbook: More Than 1,000 Classic American Recipes, I can say that these recipes well represent our region in a classy, tasteful and accurate manner. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of New and Different Dishes.......2006-11-27

Last night we finally got rid of the left over turkey from Thanksgiving and I get to think about fixing something else. I think I'm in a shrimp mood, and this book just fell open to page 66 with Sesame Roasted Shrimp Sticks with Zippy Apricot Dipping Sauce. Spicy, quick, easy and they look absolutely delicious.

As you would expect, this book from the Northwest has a lot of seafood. More ways to cook salmon that you can count (well, really you could count them) including some ways that are quite different from the others I've seen.

Another food area that has a lot of production in the Northwest is fruit, and some of her combinations of fresh fruit with farly shart ingredients like blue cheese look like the evenings side dishes are well taken care of.

Complaints, well there's one - Martini's are sacred things, you don't go messing them up with things like cucumber and sake (see page 38) - you don't even make them out of vodka - yuch! And Seattle Expresso Martini isn't really a Martini at all. Then again, the Slow-Roasted Martini Short Ribs (page 134) maybe I won't do shrimp tonight after all.

There are a lot of things here that you don't see in other cookbooks.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best!!!.......2006-11-10

Everything we have tried from "Kathy Casey's Northwest Table" has been incredible!! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to impress their Family and Friends with delicious (and fairly easy---a must for me!) Northwest favorites. You can't go wrong!

4 out of 5 stars Not helpful for me.......2007-05-23

This book may be the most comprehensive, definitive book on NW flora, but it's not very helpful to me. It's like reading a technical manual. I realize there are people who enjoy reading technical manuals, but most people don't. (That's not to say there's anything wrong with technical manuals, they just don't interest most people.) So my assumption is this book isn't written for most people.

I'd love for someone to take the information in this book and make it more engaging and accessible. Now there's a book that a wider audience would value and enjoy.

I would give this book an A- almost there and ahead of the rest.
needs a little more in the photo section for easy ID but beats the heck out of the Hitchcock that I have carried for years. I now have 2 copies..one at home and one in my pack

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Pacific Northwest regional flora.......2006-06-20

For over 30 years the regional flora for the Pacific Northwest was Hitchcock et al., Vascular Plants of the Pacific Northwest. For people on the wet side of the mountains, Kozloff provides a new standard guide. He gives us a wealth of fine photographs (over 700 in color) and illustrations, with clear descriptions and keys, allowing identification of nearly every species found in western Washington and Oregon (experts have noticed that a few species are missed, though). Non-native species are identified, with reference to their country of origin. As the most recent comprehensive text, it also provides a reasonably current taxonomic picture of the region as well, which is very useful as hundreds of new names have appeared since the days of Hitchcock. In sum, if you want the definitive flora for the region, this is it. If you want something more portable, though, you should look at a field guide - Pojar and MacKinnon's.

      Book Description

Touching all parts of the natural environment and nearly all aspects of human culture, streams and rivers act as centers of organization within landscapes. They provide natural resources such as fish and clean water, transportation, energy, diffusion of wastes, and recreation. Today, with unprecedented demands on streams and rivers by an exponentially increasing human population, a basic ecological understanding of the structure and dynamics of running waters is essential for formulating sound management and policy decisions.

The vast Pacific coastal ecoregion of the United States contains an extraordinary array of physical settings and examples of the range of dynamics associated with rivers and their management. The interface between the science and policy of natural resource management is illustrated by examples from this ecoregion, including the protection of riparian forest, the marbled murrelet, salmon, and amphibians.

River Ecology and Management: Lessons from the Pacific Coastal Ecoregion includes sections on the Physical Environment, the Biotic Environment, Ecosystem Processes, Management, and Recommendations for the Future. Specific topics include channel dynamics, hydrology, water quality, microbial processes, primary production, fish and wildlife, riparian forest dynamics, organic matter and trophic dynamics, biogeochemical cycling, maintaining biodiversity, monitoring and assessment, economic perspectives, legal considerations, and the role of non-governmental organizations in river management.
