Book Description

The cabin door crashes open-and in a few minutes Regina's life changes forever. Allegheny Indians murder her father and brother, burn their Pennsylvania home to the ground, and take Regina captive. Only her mother, who is away from home, is safe. Torn from her family, Regina longs for the past, but she must begin a new life. She becomes Tskinnak, who learns to catch fish, dance the Indian dance, and speak the Indian tongue. As the years go by, her new people become her family . . . but she never stops wondering about her mother. Will they ever meet again?

"A first-person narrative based on the true story of a young woman held by Indians from 1755-1763, related with all the impact of a hard-hitting documentary . . .Wonderful reading." (School Library Journal)

"I Am Regina is an enthralling and profoundly stirring story, historical fiction for young people at its very finest." (Elizabeth George Speare, Newbery Award-winning author of The Witch of Blackbird Pond)

4 out of 5 stars A Collision of Cultures.......2006-11-15

In I am Regina, Sally M. Keehn tells the story of a ten-year-old girl who is taken captive by Native Americans after they brutally kill her brother and father. In their village, Regina is given a new name, Tskinnak, and slowly adapts her new way of life. This young adult novel is well-crafted in terms of structure; it has a sound arc of conflict sustained by a strong narrator and cast of fascinating supporting characters that all possess individual goals and desires. Keehn masterfully juxtaposes Native American culture and the ways of the "white man" through the eyes of Regina/Tskinnak, her innocent narrator. As time progresses in the book, so does Regina/Tskinnak's understanding and acceptance of Native American culture. Though this transformation occurs slowly, the soul of her very being is forever altered. She is able to see the war amongst white men and Native Americans from both sides, and finds herself questioning where she truly belongs, a question that resonates in the minds of children and young adults of today. The only inconsistency in the book occurs during shifts in time. Keehn shifts in "moons" and at times it is confusing to judge how much or how little time has passed since the last scene. Keehn began the story using short choppy sentences, but as the book progresses, it outgrows this simplistic structure and evolves into a well-written text. I am Regina is a powerful and moving story that will captivate readers right down to the final sentence.

5 out of 5 stars I Am Regina Review.......2006-10-30

I Am Regina is one of the best books I ever read. It's good, because you can learn about a good time in history, and its a true story, all in one exciting book! I didn't think it was boring, I thought it was interesting to learn about facts! It's a great book for pre-teenagers!

5 out of 5 stars This Book is Great.......2006-10-21

This book is great you'll love it. First she and her sister gets caputered by indins when her mom and younger brother went to the mill and her dad and older brother got killed by the indins. Regina is sad first she wanted the white men to come and save her but they didn't entill every one of the indins were gone. Which was most of her family because she gave up hope. She was at this camp with the white men and all mom's and dad's are tring to find there dauters and sons from the war. Regina was so nice and tried to never give up like i am.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting book that's hard to put down.......2006-06-05

This book gives an accurate portrayal of what it was like back in the 1700's ~ and what it was like to move into the Indian's territory.

I am Regina is a true story (historically), making it that much more exciting to read. It is also one of the best books I've read lately. Ms. Keehn keeps the mystery and excitement going from beginning to end. I am also sure she did much research to find out what the Indians ate, how they prepared their food and how they forraged for food during the winter.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes true stories, anyone who is interested in history, and anyone who likes a book you cannot put down.

Don't want to spoil the story for you ~ read it for yourself and see what happened to this darling child - as well as so many others.

This book makes me want to go to Pennsylvania and visit Regina's gravesite.

5 out of 5 stars I AM REGINA.......2006-04-14

Rould you believe that two indians would crash your cabin door open, holding rifles at that, intending to kill you and your family. Well this is exactly what happened to a girl named Regina in a historical fiction novel called I am Regina.

The main charactors are Regina, Sarah, Tiger Claw, and Woelfin. This book took place back in 1755, when the French and Indian War was starting in Pennsylvania.

In the colonial times of Pennsylvania, on a small farm in the cornffield, the Leininger family were held victom by two indians. While the mother and the youngest brother were at the mill on the hill, the father and brother were murdered and scalped and the two daughters held captive to go to their tribe. while going there the two indians that met up with other indians split up at a fork, seperating the two sisters. the younger sister, Regina, and her companion, Sarah, were now held captive by the indian known as Tiger Claw to his tribe. when she reached the tribe, Regina and Sarah were adopted by none other than Tiger Claws mother, Woelfin. Will she ever see her mother and brother again, will she be able to even survive. you must read the book to find out.

this book was one othe the best books my group ever read so far, there's so much action, lost lives, war, and other great things. My personal favorite part was when Regina's sister tries to run away from the indians, on a stallion at that, I thought that showed great courage unlike her sister at the begining of the book but she does get braver. this book is great for people who like action and sorrow because in the book, the French and Indian War was going on so there was a lot of fighting and bloodshed. the author, I think, was trying to tell us to not judge people for their appearence but get to know them because in the ook when Woelfin gets to know Regina, she starts showing her good side. hope you all like this reiew and bye.

    Book Description

"This book stands alone as a study of the Spanish-American city....It brings together material on the structure of Spanish colonial cities [and] society in the cities, with an especially useful discussion of occupations and family organizations....General readers will also find this an interesting book."

—William H. Beezley, Professor of History, University of Arizona

The colonial Spanish-American city, like its counterpart across the Atlantic, was an outgrowth of commercial enterprise. A center of entrepreneurial activity and wealth, it drew people seeking a better life, with more educational, occupational, commercial, bureaucratic, and marital possibilities than were available in the rural regions of the Spanish colonies. Indeed, the Spanish-American city represented hope and opportunity, although not for everyone.

In this authoritative work, Jay Kinsbruner draws on many sources to offer the first history and interpretation in English of the colonial Spanish-American city. After an overview of pre-Columbian cities, he devotes chapters to many important aspects of the colonial city, including its governance and administrative structure, physical form, economy, and social and family life. Kinsbruner's overarching thesis is that the Spanish-American city evolved as a circumstance of trans-Atlantic capitalism. Underpinning this thesis is his view that there were no plebeians in the colonial city. He calls for a class interpretation, with an emphasis on the lower-middle class. His study also explores the active roles of women, many of them heads of households, in the colonial Spanish-American city.

        Book Description

There is no book quite like Quilt of States—the unique combination of handmade quilts with the voice of each state heard through the writing of one of the state's librarians to illustrate the coming together of the United States of America.

Using one of the only two original American folk art forms—quilting (jazz is the other)—Adrienne Yorinks demonstrates her amazing talent for using quilts not only as art, but as information sources. Her work illustrates the history of our country and is accompanied by the words of librarians from every state in the Union.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Charmed and Amazed.......2007-10-06

My late sister wrote the New Mexico segment of this book. Her publisher's copy arrived just days before she passed and we were charmed that she could be a part of such an amazing project. The illustrations are beautiful - the book is a "must" for quilters, libarians, and all children learning about their states. You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars stitches of time.......2006-02-13

Rebeccasreads highly recommends QUILTS OF STATES as a superb way to learn both the history of how America came into being, the geography of our country & the bright & charming uses of quilting montages with brief stories as told by librarians of each state.

QUILTS OF STATES has an historical introduction with each state listed according to when they joined the Union, with two page quilts for how our nation looked in 1790, after the Louisianna Purchase, the Missouri Compromise, the Mexican War, Secession & the later inclusion of Alaska & Hawaii.

A magnificent addition to libraries of both patriots & quilters.

        5 out of 5 stars Exceptional! A Must-Have........2005-10-30

Author Adrienne Yorinks and fifty librarians across the United States have literally stitched together an exquisite, exceptional creation.

The book begins with a historical introduction. After briefly chronicling the arrival of the first Europeans up to the creation of the U.S. Constitution, Yorinks notes, "[E]ventually, all 13 former Colonies ratified the Constitution and joined a new nation. It would take more than 170 years from the creation of the first state for the U.S. to become the 50 states that it is today. Every state has had its own unique path to statehood. This is their story."

Each state is given its own double-page spread, beginning with the "First State," Delaware, and ending with the "Aloha State," Hawaii. Each spread features a colorful, illustrative quilt piece created by Ms. Yorinks as well as a brief state history written by a librarian from that particular state.

Readers will find appended four pages of state facts and an index. In the author/illustrator's note, Ms. Yorinks writes, "My goal was to create something special, something truly unique." In that she has succeed spectacularly! This is not just a book, but a work of art that is sure to become a classroom classic.

        A definite "must-have." Suitable for district-wide purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Letter from Benjamin Hatcher.......2004-11-27

Benjamin Hatcher of Boston writes a long letter describing his participation in the Boston Tea Party, to William Yancy of South Carolina, June 18, 1774. Everything seems authentic, with nice illustrations.

In fine detail, the story of the Boston Tea Party is a bit different than what we know today as the legend, but the essentials are the same: the colonists boarded three British ships and threw the crates of tea overboard, due to a tax on tea which they objected to.

Benjamin Hatcher is a seller of tea and makes it clear why he opposes the tax: people can't afford it. There's a black market in tea imported from other sources, while the Tea Party is going on.

        Interesting and well written.

What was a gristmill and how did it operate? What was a housewright, and what did he use "trunnels" for? This is a fascinating glimpse into the life of a colonial village in the year 1730. By showing people's various occupations, author James Knight offers readers a unique window into American history. Highly recommended.

        2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-07-19

The Village: Life in Colonial Times, was not an appropriate title for this book in my opinion. It was supposed to be about life in the times, which is many aspects of their lifestyles back then, according to the title. When I read it, I found that it was only about all the different jobs of the colonial era, which was very disappointing. I did not like it because of this - I had thought it was going to be about the clothing they wore, and different shops, and their religion, etc. But, as I said, it was only about the jobs. Also, there were no pretty colorful pictures to go along with the text, only black and white, un- detailed sketches. So, if you are looking for a book about the jobs in colonial times, this is great for you, but if you want a book about all different parts of life in the colonial times, I would recommend finding something else.

This is the first modern scholarly edition of what is considered the most detailed ethnographic account of Cherokee life in the late 18th century. TimberlakeÕs memoirs describe the months he spent living with the Cherokees then escorting a delegation to London to meet King George III. He provides details of daily life, including ceremonies, games, the role of women, the preparation of food, and the creation of weapons, baskets, and pottery. This edition pairs the original text with extensive footnotes and annotiations, a new introduction, index, and more than 100 illustrations, including artifacts, maps, period artwork, and contemporary artwork.

What a wonderful book! Life in a Colinial Town (Picture the Past) takes young readers on a journey through life in the American colonies and beautifully illustrated it with artwork of the period and photographs of historical interpreters in authentic settings.

Young historians will come away with a good understanding of the crafts of the day, houses and furniture, a day in the life of a slave and children at school work and play. There is wonderful information and pictures of clothing wigs, food, etc.

Bonus: The book even gives a recipe for apple pancakes authentic to the period! Score!
