Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

PS - I agree: How lame that Amazon has mixed together reviews for all these different versions. They are all so different!

Anyway, this is a comment about Marcia Brown's 1957, which I found to be incredibly gory. Rather than merely knock the troll off the bridge, this billy goat gruff graphically dismembers him, poking out his eyes and reducing him to "bits, body and bones. Yuck! There are other, mellower version out there... This one's not my favorite. (ReadThatAgain!)

Cute book with pictures that keep their attention. My boys walk around all the time saying "who is going over my bridge" in their gruff little troll voice! "Don't eat me... I too little," they say. I am so glad I added this book to our collection.

My 21 month old son loves the story of the Billy Goats Gruff, at first we used to make up the story from what we remembered about it, but now with this book he can follow along and point at the troll hiding under the bridge. It gets may requests. The pictures are great and the story flows quickly enough to keep his interest. I like the ending. Snip Snap Snout, this reviews wrote out.

Which 3BBG version? This one--without question, hands down.......2005-05-23

Here's the one, parents and grandparents. Stephen Carpenter's son Tad had loved this story so much that Carpenter decided to write his own version--and am I glad he did! This is one of my four-year-old's daily requests, and my 13-year-old will still scoop it up for a chuckle from time to time. What makes this particular edition so great?
1. Big, fun illustrations. The goats are different sizes/colors. The troll is green, knobby, and hairy.
2. A troll who is just scary enough for a little menace (the littlest goat gruff appears once in his shadow) but is still kind of cute, and very comical when he takes that famous drink.
3. The cadence and style of the writing is just perfect for doing different voices for the troll and three goats, just like my mom used to do. The first time she tried it with this book, she remarked, "This is a really good version."
4. The encounter between the biggest billy goat and the troll is simply thrilling--this is one tough, unintimidated billy goat!
4. The last page is fantastic. The goats are grazing in a veritable Eden with smiles of satisfaction, and the troll is hilariously peeking out of the water down next to the bridge.
5. The old-fashioned ending--"snip snap snout, this tale's told out."
This family of seven could not love this book any more. I would not change a single line of the illustrations or a single syllable of the text. A beaut.

As one of the critics says; this i s indeed a pageturner... However, there are numerous faults facts in this book. Among them includes that the film IT`S A PLEASURE was a Fox film. Wrong, it was produced by International and released by RKO. Several critical comments on her films are stolen from among others Leslie Halliwell, a notable filmcritic and the ONLY bible for moviebuffs until internet movie database came along. Stories of Sonja and Tyrone are also way over the top; the talk they had in the dressingroom - how did Leif Henie and Raymond Strait get hold of t h a t? Leif was still in Norway at the time. However. There are several items that distinguish this biography; the stories by Sonja`s secretary Dorothy Stevens in particular... It is true that in creating the ice-skating star Sonja Henie, her father created a monster. But in the long run Sonja suffered from it. She was never taught to be a normal person. And indeed: She gave Norway a place in the sun and donated with her third husband Niels Onstad the Henie-Onstad ArtGallery near Oslo. U should visit it if u came to Norway. All of Sonja`s medals and trophies are in a well-guarded room and photos etc from her films are displayed in a huge basement. It must never be forgotten that she gave our nation a great deal - indeed giving the community of Bærum a home for retired people. U WILL see this reading this book that she was a trouper - a woman who was taught to fight and be competetive. And everything she tried her hands on - became lucrative.

Hell on Ice.......1999-10-30

I know and have known quite a people who worked with Sonja or were as close a friend as she would permit and this book seems to confirm all that I've heard over the last 40 years. I met Sonja in 1963 in Pittsburgh at the opening of the Pittsburgh Arena. Despite all her shortcomings as a person, there was something about her that fascinates me as a skater and as a person. Anyone interested in skating should read this book.

For those who loved to watch Sonja Heine, this book is a must, showing her amazing rise to fame, volatile temperment and unbelievable perserverance. You won't be able to put it down from start to finish.

I found the story to be very lovely with wonderful pictures to highlight it. It seemed to be a very truthful story, though I do not know alot about that country and its customs. After checking it out from the library, I have now decided I want to own this book. I highly recommend it.

I was just reminded of this great retelling of Three Billy Goats Gruff. The suspense and pacing are brilliant. The illustrations are gorgeous AND funny. It was one of my all-time favorite read-alouds when I was a children's librarian. A MUST HAVE!

Who's Afraid of the Big Blue Chupacabra?.......2007-08-15

Honesty is a good policy, right? I should be honest with you right from the start then. Ladies and gentlement, I feel no shame when I tell you that I worship at the hallowed shrine of Eric A. Kimmel. Oh, don't look at me like that. It's not such an unusual thing to say. Consider the following situation: You've a class of itchy, hot, sticky, whiny third graders who want to be anywhere but your Story Hour Room listening to picture books. You know and I know that they will like these books once they get into them, but for a group this finicky you're going to need some real show stoppers. Picture books that wow them right from the get-go and don't release their grip until the kids are on their way home. To whom do you turn in your hour of need? What name leaps immediately to your lips? Sweet Eric A. Kimmel, of course. You whip out your copy of Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock, and voila. Instant happiness and calm. There's something about Mr. Kimmel that can turn folktales, both classic and original, into readaloud pleasures. Now he's set his sights on that old Billy Goats Gruff tale but with a South American twist. The result is "The Three Cabritos" and a nicer addition to my storytime revue I haven't seen in months.

So there are these three cabritos, yes? Musical boys that they are, Reynald is small and fast and plays the fiddle. Orlando is the middle child and he plays the guitar. And Augustin is their big friendly brother, and he's good with an accordion. Everything is all peachy keen until the three hear about a fantastic fiesta that's being held in Mexico. The brothers are gung ho to go, in spite of their mother's warning to beware of the big, scary, infinitely hungry Chupacabra that lives under the bridge of the Rio Grande. Being the fastest, Reynald meets the creature first, but persuades it to wait for his older brother, rather than eat him. Orlando does the same, and when Augustin arrives he proves to be more than a match for the dance prone bridge dweller. A quick Author's Note and Pronunciation Guide for Spanish terms round out the story.

Well OF COURSE a Chupacabra would eat the three billy goats. What do all the legends of the Chupacabras say they eat, after all? Goats! So kudos to Mr. Kimmel for writing an alternative billy goat gruff story that makes perfect sense. I've seen versions done where the goats live in the inner city and where they are animals other than goats. To me, keeping the goat aspect of the story seems central to maintaining a connection to the original. Kimmel's also in lovely form with this book, keeping the tone light and the story hopping. The words and pictures are so cheery, in fact, that you remain completely oblivious to the whole "take my brother" aspect of the story. So well done there.

Illustrator Stephen Gilpin grew on me considerably too as I read through this tale. At first glance, I may have dismissed his pictures as being too computer graphicky. I was under some kind of impression that they were the slick byproduct of a series of ones and zeroes. On closer inspection, however, I could see that they were nothing of the sort. Gilpin works primarily in graphite. The colors are put in later with computers, yes, but the essential structure is hand-drawn and mighty appealing. He's also one of those illustrators that can draw the vertical pupils in a goat's eyes without making the critter look evil or possessed. As for the Chupacabra, he's rather cute. A gigantic blue furry guy who, when he dances (and he seems to do that a lot) looks positively impressed with his own hot moves. I wouldn't worry too much about your kids getting scared off by the villain in this book. If anything, they may have too much sympathy invested in the bad guy to cheer on his demise.

Authors have a variety of choices when it comes to working a little Spanish into their titles. As I see it, you've one of two choices. You can pluck out little words here and there and translate them into Spanish (ala The Bossy Gallito/El Gallo de Bodas or Chato and the Party Animals). There's that. Or you can just translate the whole kerschmozzle on the opposite page of a story and go entirely bilingual. Kimmel opts for the former, which is fine. The world certainly needs more bilingual books, but at this point we will take what we can get. Speaking of choices, I wonder if Kimmel took into special consideration whether or not the three brothers would be escaping the Chupacabra to get from the U.S. into Mexico rather than going from Mexico to America. That would just lend all kinds of interesting layers if it was the other way around, don't you think? Treatises, college papers, and who knows what all could be written interpreting this little picture book and its take on the current border situation with our southern neighbors. For simplicity's sake, the book doesn't veer in that direction. Still, it would have been something to talk about otherwise, no?

With the possible exception of the unlikely appearance of a magical accordion (a detail that rankled just a tad), I'm a wholehearted promoter of this title. You may wish to think about pairing this book alongside fellow partially bilingual title Número Uno by Arthur Dorros. Or perhaps you want another story from the same folktale but with an entirely different look? Consider Three Cool Kids by Rebecca Emberley. As for this book, it features a mighty fine pairing of author and illustrator. A folktale deviation well worth investigation.

In the late nineteenth century, Scandinavian urban dwellers developed a passion for a new, utterly modern sort of visual spectacle: objects and effigies brought to life in astonishingly detailed, realistic scenes. The period 1880-1910 was the popular high point of mannequin display in Europe. Living Pictures, Missing Persons explores this phenomenon as it unfolded with the rise of wax museums and folk museums in the largest cities of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Mark Sandberg asks: Why did modernity generate a cultural fascination with the idea of effigy? He shows that the idea of effigy is also a portal to understanding other aspects of visual entertainment in that period, including the widespread interest in illusionistic scenes and tableaux, in the "portability" of sights, spaces, and entire milieus.

Sandberg investigates this transformation of visual culture outside the usual test cases of the largest European metropolises. He argues that Scandinavian spectators desired an unusual degree of authenticity--a cultural preference for naturalism that made its way beyond theater to popular forms of museum display. The Scandinavian wax museums and folk-ethnographic displays of the era helped pre-cinematic spectators work out the social implications of both voyeuristic and immersive display techniques. This careful study thus anticipates some of the central paradoxes of twentieth-century visual culture--but in a time when the mannequin and the physical relic reigned supreme, and in a place where the contrast between tradition and modernity was a high-stakes game.

Likewise, the troll baby was a terror who slept all night and cried all day, which is when trolls like to take to their beds. There is something fascinating about the witch in this story. The illustrations by Kelly Murphy are exquisite. My son cried when we took it back to the library after renewing it 5 times. I must buy our own copy...

Like everyone else, I heard about trolls when I was kid, but I started to really appreciate them when my wife and I lived in Norway. Trolls fascinate me, not least because they're creatures of earth, almost literally-in many depictions their bodies appear to be made out of rock and clumps of sod, and they often have moss or wild grasses growing on them. (Besides, we all know what happens when they're struck by the rays of the sun!). I also love trolls because they seem to be descendants of the great Frost Giants and other enemies of the Norse gods like Odin and Thor. And I like to think that, though dim-witted, trolls aren't necessarily as evil as they've been portrayed. In a similar way, I knew even as a kid that new babies often cry at night-but I couldn't "appreciate" this fact till my own children arrived and, coyote-like, seemed to live to howl at the moon! This can be a very, very hard time to get through, and just thinking that trolls have to face it too made me feel more compassionate toward them. And yet the truth is that new babies-like all profound gifts from God-come with complications and challenges, which it's our loving duty to face up to. So you kids with screaming siblings, and you oh-so-dreary-eyed, sleep-deprived mothers and fathers-take heart! It won't last forever! And remember: Don't worry about witches out in the wood-for the truth is that EVERY baby is good!
