Book Description
This vivid work, first published by UNC Press in 1954, reveals General Joseph Orville Shelby as one of the best Confederate cavalry leadersand certainly the most colorful.
Born in Lexington, Kentucky, but drawn by the promise of the growing West, Shelby became one of the richest men in Missouri. Siding with the Confederacy at the outbreak of the Civil War, he organized his Iron Brigade of cavalrywhose ranks included Frank and Jesse Jamestaught his men a slashing frontier style of fighting, and led them on incredible raids against Federal forces in Missouri. When the Confederacy fell, Shelby refused to surrender and instead took his command to Mexico, where they fought in support of the emperor Maximilian. Upon his return to Missouri, Shelby became an immensely popular figure in the state, eventually attaining the status of folk hero, a living symbol of the Civil War in the West.

Shelby: One fine cavalry general.......2006-03-07
Many commanders, both North and South, thought Jo Shelby to be the best cavalry general of the South. From the black plume he wore in his cap to the large sorrel horses he rode (after getting three shot from under him at Cane Hill, Arkansas, he superstitiously would only ride sorrels) to his daring tactics, Shelby struck an heroic figure. A successful businessman in Missouri before the war and a prominent slaveholder, he raised a three-regiment cavalry brigade in 1862, taught it western fighting tactics, and conducted a number of raids in Missouri and Arkansas for the rest of the war. A real thorn in the side of Union leaders, Shelby's "Iron Brigade" inflicted much damage in raids all along the western border region. Most distinguished were his operations in Sterling Price's raid into Missouri in the fall of 1864, especially at Glasgow and Sedalia (both of which he captured), Waverly, and Westport. When the war ended, he refused to surrender, and simply took his men to Mexico to fight for Maximillian. But after Maximillian was killed in 1866, Shelby returned to Missouri. His popularity only increased in the hero-hungry post-war South, which was bolstered further after he appeared as a defense witness in the trial of the James brothers, who had ridden with him during the war. He died in 1897, and his funeral was the second largest in the post-war South for a Confederate leader, after only Jeff Davis's.
O'Flaherty's approach is that of a popular, rather than an academic, historian. So much conversational dialogue is included that sometimes the book reads more like a novel than a biography. At times he over-quotes sources: for example, he includes the complete transcript of an interview that appeared in the Kansas City "Journal" with Shelby just before the James Boys trial. It's interesting, but could have been abridged. His purpose, though, seems to be to present Shelby as a hero in the Sir Walter Scott mold: brave, loyal to a cause, fair and democratic, tough on the battlefield, concerned with the welfare of his charges. In this he succeeds admirably. [This is a reprint of the original 1954 edition.]
Jo Shelby.......2005-08-02
I was particularly interested in reading about Confederate General Jo Shelby as my great-grandfather fought under him during the Civil War, serving in Co. A, Elliott's Battalion,
Shelby's Brigade. The book was fairly informative, but relied too heavily on the writings of Major Edwards, Shelby's Aide, who was not always objective, and given to hyperbole.
All-in-all though, it was enjoyable reading and gave me a lot of information about the man my ancestor served under.
I am in the process of visiting the battlegrounds where Shelby campaigned and this book will help in visualizing the various battles.
A very fine read.......2003-04-09
Gen. Shelby did remarkable things with his small command. His genius was unappreciated due to Jefferson Davis' myopic pre-occupation with west point pedigrees instead of ability and results. A Southerner can only sigh at the lost opportunity, if Shelby had been given command of command of the Army of the Trans-Mississippi instead of Theophilus Holmes.
This is a very readable volume about the greatest Confederate cavalryman in the war who led several different lives. About a half of it covers the war, another 1/4th the Mexico adventure, and the remaining 1/4 are split between his growing up and the post-Mexico (1868-97)years.
It features vivid descriptions of many battles in MO and AR, as well as the tale of his expedition to Mexico after the war. The details of his tactics at the Battle of Cane Hill, which he used repeatedly after that is fascinating. The author's style is a bit colorful and folksy, sorta like you're there talking to him. If you demand that your history read like a textbook that may spook you off, but if it doesn't it's a wonderful bio about a neglected figure

Four novellas of standard Laumer heroics.......2006-07-20
This is not the science fiction I usually read, as it involves super heroes (disguised as ordinary men), tanks-on-steroids called Bolos, and standard guy-against-the-universe plots. But nobody does a better job with this kind of material than Keith Laumer. I love his stuff and it makes a nice break from cyber-dudes and computer games.
"The Undefeated" consists of four novellas published from 1963 through 1967 in "Galaxy" and "Worlds of Tomorrow" sci-fi magazines. They are:
"WorldMaster"--After the defeat the Soviet Bloc (yeah, I know, a bit dated) in a fierce space battle where his admiral's ship appeared to hang back out of the fight, Captain Maclamore learns that his commander is saving space's last remaining battleship for better things--like helping him take over as supreme ruler of Earth. Does Captain Mac want to join his old friend in the new World Order? Heck, no. Mac's going to take out the wannabe-El-Supremo or die trying. (Anyone with a 'carefully lamp-tanned' face has got to be a bad guy in a Laumer novella.)
"The Night of the Trolls"--Eighty or so years after the Big War, Jackson wakes up in a top-priority research center and discovers that what used to be America has been bombed back to the Stone Age. What exactly happened while he was asleep? In order to find out, Jackson must first get by the rogue Bolo that guards the research center where he had slept away eight decades.
"Thunderhead"--Lieutenant Carnaby has been stranded for twenty-one years on a miserable mining planet with a single surviving (if you can call it that) settlement. He tends his beacon station, wondering if the Fleet has forgotten him---"Maybe they're too busy fighting the Djann to check in with every little JN beacon station on the Outline." When a message does finally come through, Carnaby's flitter is long defunct, and he must make the long climb up Thunderhead to reset his beacon. If he does make it to the top, it won't be much fun. The long-absent Fleet has asked him to call an enemy warship down on top of himself.
"End as a Hero"--A bit more tongue-in-cheek than the first three stories. Grantham (a Retief clone) escapes from the enemy Gool (gigantic icky telepathic slugs) and makes his way back to Earth, only to discover his own people are trying to destroy him because they think his mind is controlled by the Gool. After the first few attempts to blast him into atoms have failed, Grantham does some serious thinking on how to persuade his commanding officers that he's still on their side.

Gritty and Timely.......2004-06-01
Nominally fiction, comprising two parts memoir, one part polemic and one part historian's caution ("Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" -- George Santayana), The Undefeated covers a little known and less remembered period in the history of American involvement in Vietnam, the last year of ground troop action, when the foremost thought on everyone's mind was that they didn't want to be the last man killed in Vietnam.
The Undefeated contains a full complement of believable characters involved in some ugly situations in Quang Tri Province. The war was supposed to be winding down around them. It wasn't.
Full disclosure: K. Mike "Kevin" Hill and I are both members of Vietnam Writers 4 Kerry (see http://www.vietnamwriters.com). However, that fact had no influence on this review.
I am the author of A Bad Attitude: A Novel from the Vietnam War, also available on Amazon.

Book Description
How does a mother cope when her twelve-year-old is suddenly abducted? What goes through the mind of a child when she is far from home, helpless to determine her own destiny? How is a family affected when the oldest child is gone for weeks, monthswhen they don't know whether she is dead or alive, when they have no idea where she is?
Stolen Innocence follows the real-life trail of deception that plagued Jan Broberg from the age of twelve when she became the victim of a terrifying and bizarre four-year brainwashing ordeal. Jan's captor maintained such a convincing and threatening hold on her that even after she returned home from the initial kidnapping she continued to secretly meet him and was eventually taken from home a second time.
Stolen Innocence is a gripping story for anyone seeking assurance that the human mind and spirit can overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges. It tells the story of one family's survival over incredible afflictions. Join their triumphant journey; see how the same determination, unending hope, and unwavering faith in God that provided strength to win their battles can give you strength to win yours.
Stolen Innocence: The Jan Broberg Story details not only the frightening acts of a dangerous pedophile, but also shows warning signals and teaches many of the tough lessons that parents, neighbors and society must learn in order to better protect our children.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating read.......2006-05-03
I saw this cover over a year ago, but forgot the title before I could find the book. I was thrilled when I found the book again, as the story had intrigued me. I was so impressed with the honesty of this story, of the humility of Mary Ann to be so honest, even when I'm sure it was hard for her to do. I'm also so proud of Jan--I've seen her movies and I was stunned when I realized she was the girl in this book. Evil definatley has a face and a name--as does faith and family unity.
And to the 'Revenge' reviewer--from the tone of the post I can't help but think it's Robert himself--this is the only review that reviewer has ever written. It sounds to me that he's still seeking his power any way he can. Anyone that read that book and has any decency in them would realize that it's not about revenge, it's about triumph. The book isn't about Robert--it's about a family who survives the worst life has to offer at the hands of a twisted man. They are now willing to tell their story so as to spare someone else from having to live through the same torment.
My only complain (the reason for 4 stars) is that I'd have liked to have Jan's portions written in first person like Mary Ann's was and I'd have liked to have the information presented with more detail to the chronology, there were places where it skipped to future, then back again. All it all it was very well told and well written--especially since it's been 30 years.
I'm a little curious.......2004-04-21
To the person who wrote the review entitled "Revenge? Hate?" I am curious to know how you know that this book, as you put it, is "destroying a man and his present family"? Do you personally know the kidnaper? From the things you said in your review, I am guessing that you do. To me it sounds like you are the one with a lot of hate. The author didn't "smear" anyone's name, the kidnaper did that to himself when he committed the crimes. You act like we should have sympathy for the kidnaper. But let me tell you, I know how it is to spend a lifetime to recover from abuse and I don't have sympathy for someone who would kidnap and molest an innocent child. You also asked why the author waited so long to write the book. As a victim, I know that sometimes it takes a very long time before a person is ready to talk about such horrible crimes. It is frightening and shameful to have gone through such things. When I read this book (and I happened to also go to a conference where the victim spoke) I didn't feel that the author was judging the kidnaper. I think it could have been much worse against the perpetrator if that had been the goal. She wasn't writing about everything that has happened over the past 30 years, she didn't write whether the person had or hadn't changed since the events of the book, she just wrote about the experiences of the time of the kidnaping. And she wrote it in a way that truly hit home to me. I know what it feels like to be terrified every day because of abuse. I wish I would have had the courage to tell someone many years ago. This book gives victims some strength and courage. I applaud it. I think everyone should read this book!
Revenge? Hate?.......2004-04-21
This is a good story for parents to help them be aware of what could happen to their children. However, why did the author feel it was so necessary to repeatedly state the name of the friend that took their daughter? THE ENTIRE STORY COULD HAVE BEEN TOLD USING AN ANNOMYNOUS NAME INSTEAD OF DELIBERATLY SMEARING A PERSON'S NAME ON ALMOST EVERY PAGE OF THE BOOK!! The reason I say this is that it has been 30 long years since this event happened and people do change. Why dig up all this dirt and destroy a man and his present family over something that happened so long ago?
The answer?.....Some people(the ones who wrote this book)can ONLY JUDGE and are unable to forgive.
I did alot of things 30 years ago that I am ashamed of but with wisdom and age have learned the wrong of my mistakes and become a better person. Don't most of us become wiser and better as we age. Would you want to be judged today by things you did 30 years ago?
My father's associate was charged with molesting a 12 yr old girl. It was in all the papers and very, very biased. The papers never asked for his side of the story. His career(a Pediatrician) was ruined! He over-dosed on pills due to the trauma. Two weeks after his death the girl admitted she had made it all up BECAUSE SHE WANTED SOME ATTENTION!! Not only did she kill a wonderful man, she ruined the lives of his wife, 8 children, and 900 pediatric patients.
To the author I would like to ask these questions.......why did you wait 30 long years to write this story? Did Elizabeth Smart's book motivate you to take advantage of the moment and cash in on the profits while the market was "HOT"? Why have you not found forgiveness in your heart?
To the reader I would give this advice: Do not judge a book by it's cover. Be assured there is more to this story than meets the eye!
AMAZING STORY!.......2004-03-28
Jan Broberg Felt is my cousin and Mary Ann Broberg is my aunt. I was a small child when Jan was abducted and my memories and knowledge of the abductions were vague. This book told me so much that I didn't know about Jan's story. I was amazed and horrified by all of it.
I encouraged both of my teenage daughters to read this book and am telling everyone I know about this story. It's so well written and were it not true would be almost unbelievable.
This book really is a must read!
Why Isn't Berchtold In Jail.......2004-03-24
Jan Broberg Felt is my 3rd cousin's wife. I found her story both tragic and compelling. Indeed the book is a "page turner." I'm proud Jan now carries the Felt family name because of how she has aquitted her life since the tragedy. Robert Berchtold should have gone to jail for a long time, but he weasled his way free. Even this month I hear he tried to run down one of Jan's body guards. He's a real piece of work.

Customer Reviews:
Good suggestions.......2007-09-15
This book has a wide range of useful information. I was looking for creative ideas to make taking lunch more fun, and this book was full of them. I also liked that it didn't rely on foods some kids are allergic or intolerant to.
Great Lunch Box Ideas.......2007-08-25
This book was great in that it helped me to think outside the box for packing my son's lunches for school. It doesn't have to be a sandwich, carrots & fruit. My son is a very picky eater and now I feel like I have a good amount of options to make for some variety. I also found how to better involve him, which I'm hoping will increase the odds he will eat what is packed. Some of the recipes in the back were great, but I'm not too sure yet about others. I won't knock'em till I try them though. The book was a very easy and enjoyable read and I would recommend this book to anyone.
Quick, easy and healthy lunches for kids.......2006-06-09
The Healthy Lunchbox provides a solid basis for parents to provide their children with healthy lunches that pack up quickly and easily.
The book is divided into four parts: Part One, "Get Ready!", outlines the nutrional needs of kids; Part Two, "Get Set!", helps parents with the logistics of packing lunches (how to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold, menu suggestions, ideas on how to get your children to eat what you pack, not trade it away, alternatives to junk food, etc.); Part Three, "Go!", where all the recipes are housed; and Part Four, "More Food for Thought," where the authors give parents further resources.
I read the first two parts (after looking at all the recipes!) and the information was solid and written in a conversational tone. My reason for buying the book, of course, was the recipes and I was not disappointed. There was a wide variety of foods (from your standard english muffin pizza to japanese style california rolls) presented under three headings: Sandwiches, Salads, Soups, Casseroles, and Other Main Dishes; Fruit and Veggie Side Dishes and Snacks; and Snacks and Desserts. As promised, the recipes are quick and easy, and each has its own nutrional index covering calories, total fat (further broken down into saturated fat, polyunsaturated fat and monunsaturated fat), cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates (further broken down into dietary fiber and sugars), protein, and exchanges. Serving size, total servings, prep time and cook time are also included. Indeed, this book is very comprehensive.
Additionally, the recipes in this book can appeal to adults and children alike, so that weekend lunches and adult lunchboxes can benefit, too. My particular favorite is the Turkey Lurkey Jerky - it's easy (although time-intensive) and tasty and now I can make my husband's favorite snack without any preservatives or other nasties. In fact, the first batch I made was eaten the same day (much to my chagrin)! This recipe alone was worth the cost of the book to me!

Practical but kindergarten level advice .......2007-03-23
This book is truly overrated - I think the author should have been more inventive with suggestions - most mom's know these things but life is too busy to implement them - this book did not help - for instance buy at the deli instead of fast food - at the store deli you have to park go in choose check out go home divide and conquer instead of voila - DRIVE-THRU! Give us something that is new and worth reading in the next book - maybe title it How to Get Overweight Kids Healthy Again - Tips You Can Use to Help Them Lose. Good luck next time - this one is a bust.
Practical advice!!!.......2004-12-27
Finally a readable, common sense approach to feeding my kids. This book has many realistic ideas and useable recipes for a busy mom like me. Thankfully, my kids are already physically active, but this book has given me new ideas and notions to ensure that my kids stay active. Good job Dr. McAllister!!!
great help for moms.......2004-12-08
Finally, some help for a mom who needs help getting her kids to eat healthy foods. Lots of great ideas for fun lunches and healthy snacks that my kids actually look forward to eating. This book helps you understand how to get your kids to want to eat right without nagging. The "action plans" at the end of each chapter are a lot of fun for kids and parents, and you'll probably end up some of the activities family routines and traditions.
Waste of Time and Money.......2004-03-11
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that too much TV and too many snack foods will likely lead to an over-weight child. I didn't need this book to tell me to limit TV and have my children excercise in order to keep them in shape.
If you like fat-free mayonaise, fat-free cream cheese or reduced fat jarred turkey gravy, then this book is for you. I personally think that these things are disgusting, and wish that I not purchased this book.
I wanted to new ideas for heathy eating for children - this book did not provide it.
Great Resource.......2004-01-16
I loved this book! It has been a great resource for me as a professional and as a mother of three growing children. I am a family therapist who sees many single mothers of young children. They are often overwhelmed with the physical, emotional, and financial demands of parenting. This book's easy and quick recipes were perfect; not too time consuming, and not too complicated. Moreover, the education regarding the importance of healthy eating, was very well received. Dr. McAllister's humor and her easy reading style encouraged many of my clients to prioritize nutrition. Many of the moms I work with became excited about their own nutrition. They felt they were doing something important for their children and themselves. As a busy mom, I too appreciated the quick snack ideas. Kids want to eat "right now" and too often they grab what ever is in arms reach and can be ripped open fast. This book gave me some plan ahead ideas that did not keep me up all night. I was also reminded of the lack of nutritional value in many of the foods my kids reach for. It motivated me as well as my clients. It is a great resource. I also plan to continue to share it with my clients and my friends. Thank you Dr. McAllister!

Good things come in small packages.......2007-10-05
For the bad news: First, this is a small paperback book -- as in approx 6 x 6 inches. And, disappointingly, there are almost no photographs of the recipes.
For the good news: After going brain-dead trying to come up with more variety for my kids' lunches, I needed inspiration. The recipes in this book are interesting and innovative. Some need a fair amount of preparation, but most are quick to put together.
As with all "healthy" recipe books, there are foods here that no kid would touch, but most of the recipes are sure to be kid-pleasers. If you're wanting to shake up the lunch-box routine, you're sure to find some helpful ideas here. There are some recipes that have even made it into our "quick and easy" dinner rotation.
