5 out of 5 stars Necessary text to study prejudice, discrimination and other.......2003-01-12

This text opens the eyes of the reader to the savagery and despicable cruelty of the lopsided South in the 1950's. How a world can be so tainted that it would demonize the human race with such an act. Killing of a child for this so-called crime denies the existence of the world God created where human beings are meant to co-exist regardless of color. Prejudice is learned; it cannot be natural. How can it be ?

4 out of 5 stars shocking but necessary.......2001-03-20

I read this book as part of Dr. Robert Weem's Black History class at the University of Missouri and I was absolutely stunned. Being one of a very few white girls growing up on the border of Mexico, I thought I had experienced racism and prejudice, boy did I have a lot to learn. I was first shocked and then just out right embarrassed that anyone, but especially someone I share any similar characteristic with (white skin in this case) could so horribly murder a child. "OH MY GOD" I repeated to myself over and over again. "OH MY GOD."-the picture of that mutilated child will surely sicken the heart of anyone, especially a parent.

I think anyone who has been disillusioned to believe that the old south (or the new south for that matter) was made up of free, happy black folks who were at last welcomed to white society at the abolition of slavery (or even in 1964 for what it is worth) needs to read this book and see the world without the rose colored glasses.

A little hard to follow, this book doesn't flow like a John Grisham novel, but if you can get through the tedious facts (I know, I am part of that now-now generation) you will find a heart wrenching and mortifying story that will change the way you see white America and the poor hand it has dealt so many black people. Also very interesting...the dissention between Till's mother, uncle and the NAACP. I completely recommend this book to anyone interested in history, knowledge, and the truth.

Book Description

It has always been said that truth will ultimately prevail. This three part book represents that truism. Part One presents the untainted facts surrounding the story of Emmett Till's brutal lynching and the establishment of that incident as the true catalyst of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s. Unearthing and establishing Till as catalyst found its beginnings over thirty years later, in the 1988 Ford Doctoral Dissertation, "Emmett Till: The Impetus of the Modern Civil Rights Movement," by this author at the University of Iowa. It speaks the truth about the seminal role of the innocent fourteen-year-old northern youth whose brief visit to Mississippi, the metaphor for American racism, rendered him the status of martyr for victims of centuries of abject racial oppression. Part Two presents the raison d'être for the book, as it confronts and exposes the abominable acts of plagiarism by several people whose obvious goal is to acquire fame and fortune for themselves. Part Three highlights the continuing commitment to the struggle on the part of the author via demonstrating the Till Continuum, represented by modern day examples of Black victimization. The plight of Black farmers, who are losing 9,000 acres of land per week, and land owners in general, such as "Smokin' Joe" Frazier who lost 140 acres of prime property in Bucks County, PA valued at 100 million dollars, are supreme paradigms of this reality. Thus, the injustices of robbing Black people and their future generations of their land legacy and the theft of the intellectual property of one who is dedicated to truth in its totality are the key elements in this book. Scholars, attorneys, celebrities, and many others have offered testimonies here, thereby rendering their dedication to bringing a halt once and for all to such pervasive injustices.

This book blew me away!!! Dr. Hudson-Weems is the true keeper of the legacy of Emmett Till. She was the "first" to establish Emmett as the true catalyst of the Civil Rights Movement!!!!! Why haven't I heard of Dr. Hudson-Weems until now?!!! Her eloquence and writing style is without question. She is the only one brave enough to "tell it like it was." Susan Parr's prose delights the hearts of adults...because we are all children at heart. This is a passionate story of a lamb in Jerusalem at the time of Christ's passion and death on the cross.
I found this to be a good study for the very young. It takes kids into Barnabas' new Bible adventure. Really fun. The rhymes were captivating.

4 out of 5 stars A compelling novel of man's inhumanity to man........2003-04-11

The Sacrificial Lamb is definitely not just one more story about the holocaust. It's a compelling novel about man's inhumanity to man; of people caught up in events that comprised the most evil times of the 20th Century.
Nathan Ludwig and Stephon Baumeister first met as young boys, for a time immune to the prejudices of the adult world that was pre-war Germany. Anti-semitism forced an end to their friendship but it could not destroy the bond that had formed between them.
After his father's death, Stephon, raised by parents loyal to National Socialism, strikes a deal in which the Reich pays for his medical education, after which he is expected to work for and support the Reich. Assigned to Buchenwald, to get along, he performs experiments on the prisoners.
Nathan, after the death of his parents, is raised by relatives. He attends medical school where he meets his wife, and becomes a doctor. But he is forced from his practice by rising anti-Jewish sentiment. Sensing danger, he decides to take his family and flee Germany.
This compelling novel pulls the reader in and will not let go, as Nathan and his family are captured. While they are sent elsewhere, he is sent to Buchenwald where he once again meets Stephon.
Time passes. Nathan, with the help of prayer and God's grace, finds the courage to minister to both the spiritual and physical needs of fellow prisoners. He uses his past friendship with Stephon to acquire additional medical supplies with which to ease their pain.
Here we have a riveting story of helpless people caught up in those evil days. Doepke makes their suffering seem real as they are forced to put their lives on hold and endure tremendous suffering. We meet individuals who, because of their horrible experiences, become more than they ever thought they could be.
Living at Buchenwald, Nathan develops a closer relationship with Jesus as his personal savior and friend, and through him, a close relationship with God. Ignoring the danger of discovery, Nathan, in the tradition of Bonhoeffer and Kolbe, comforts many by praying with them, offering a belief in God and hope for the future to those open enough to listen. Stephon, watching, is not immune, and he begins to question his rigid loyalty to Hilter's goals.
As with the biblical David who answers God's call and strides purposefully toward the giant Goliath, eager to do God's work, in Nathan, we have another example of how God uses insignificant humans to accomplish His ends, and we see that adversity and suffering do, indeed, serve a useful purpose. It's been said that more poeple have come to God because of suffering and adversity than in any other way, and Jack Doepke's tale amply demonstates this truth.
I also liked the way Doepke developed his characters. These are people about whom one comes to care deeply. You'll marvel that Nathan is not caught and dragged to the ovens; that Stephon is not exposed and shot; and hope and pray, along with Nathan that his wife and sons will be found alive after the war.
A drama of excitement and moral seriousness, this book will cause you to stop and ponder the evil of those days in Europe, when civilization seemed about to perish at the hands of immoral men. I heartily recommend it.

      Book Description

Selflessness and courage comprise those who join the military and go off to foreign lands to defend our country. Leaving behind family, friends and spouses, these men and women face their enemy and mortality to recognize a much grander concept: freedom.

The Korean War has often been overshadowed by the power of World War I and II and the revolutionary years of Vietnam. Yet the men who were in Korea and fought on behalf of the United States sacrificed just as much as their fellow men in previous and later wars. In the autobiographical work "Sacrificial Lambs," author Raymond Colton tells his story of joining the military at the age of eighteen with grand notions of Army life only to realize the illusions of what constitutes a hero.

Telling and honest, Colton's "Sacrificial Lambs" allows readers to experience his pain in serving a country that, upon returning home, treated him differently as a disabled veteran. Colton gives voice to all who fought in the Korean War and portrays the "real life" experiences of a Korean War soldier and hero.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Author.......2007-09-17

I have read two of her books now and neither of them were at all disapointing. She revels her whole self in this book and I find it amazing that she was able to get through all of what happen to her. It was intresting to see how her work with the young boy brought up her old baggage and she was able to make it through that. Very good book and hard to put down.

5 out of 5 stars Healing is always two-sided.......2007-05-04

Annie's realization that "healing is always two-sided" seems to capture the heart and soul of the therapeutic relationship. Her artfully written narrative shows how "what has been wounded in a relationship must be, after all, healed in a relationship."

Her healing therapeutic relationships--both as a therapist and as a client--help Annie begin to move beyond the damage of her past traumatic relationships. Annie convincingly demonstrates the therapist's own sense of vulnerability has the potential to bring either tragic harm or human healing to the client. She beautifully summarizes this realization with her advice to therapists: "If it is possible to remain open to our fears and make reparations for our mistakes, our vulnerability can be used in the service of healing."

5 out of 5 stars powerful, beautiful, evoking.......2004-02-19

I began this book because I am a student of Annie's. I could not put it down, feeling like I myself was becoming somehow involved with her relationship with Ben (the 5 year old boy with brown hair and bangs). I felt like I was getting inside both Annie and Ben while watching the beautiful way in which they interacted. I could not be in the room with this book without wanting to read on into the relationship that evolves. The personal aspect of the patient-therapist relationship becomes the center focus as does Annie's life outside of these interactions with Ben. The reflection, time, energy, and exposure that is demonstrated by the author in this book was by far the best I have ever seen. This has become my favorite book, one that I will never live without, and also one that will remind me of what I want to do with my life and how to do it.

4 out of 5 stars The Prevalence of Dismal Psychotherapists.......2002-09-30

Harvard child psychologist and severe child abuse survivor Annie Rogers suffered psychiatric hospitalizations once or twice a year from puberty until her late twenties -- when, after a six year insidiously inept and crazymaking "therapy," an attempt to stab and shoot that therapist and one last hospitalization for another word salad psychosis (and no more insurance), her exceptional and no doubt desperate sister and friends found the gifted and pro bono analyst Dr. Blumenfeld. If this exceptional memoir hasn't become a classic must read in psychology with many reviews by both patients and therapists by now, there are unfortunate reasons. One is that Annie's politically correct adolescence shows in her disdain for the "medical models and diagnoses" Dr. Blumenfeld himself could afford to abandon only because he knew them and the blind therapists who live by them so well -- and thus could authentically reach and stabilize the talented and brilliant, borderline and psychotic personality and doctoral intern Annie. "You have a kind of giftedness, Annie, that probably has always been inseparable from your suffering, and we don't know very much about that yet." What we need now is a wonderful book from the exceptional and sainted Dr. Blumenfeld and more from the healed and gifted writer Dr. Rogers on the two sided magic of play therapy with children. You must meet Annie's beloved "oppositional" 5 year old patient Ben and ponder the 7 foot angel "Theosporus" who protected and accompanied Annie from age 6 to Dr. Blumenfeld's office at 27. A Shining Affliction raises more questions than it answers -- it might have been twice as long, and it's hard to tell if important details were deliberately or unconsciously left out. As it is, it's a daring memoir by a once psychotic Harvard child psychologist that should be a controversial must read classic in both child and adult psychotherapy.

5 out of 5 stars a strong memoir, about which I have a few criticisms.......2001-09-01

At its best it reminded me strongly of I Never Promised You A Rose Garden, in that it shows the healing relationship between an excellent therapist and a disturbed female patient. This book had the added benefit of having the patient/author also be a therapist, and while being healed herself doing a marvelous job of participating in the healing of a young boy whose problems are remarkably similar to her own.

The book was beautifully written, very open and revealing, and gentle in its nature. I also was grateful to hear the author write of her experiences with a TERRIBLE therapist, who, for self-protection, violated therapeutic boundaries left and right and essentially drove the author mad.

            A few criticisms:
            1) I found annoying the authorýs rambling free associations when she was psychotic. Itýs like, she seemed to be trying to be literary and give the reader an idea of what was going through her mind, but I think she could have come up with a more coherent, descriptive and readable way of doing it than spouting out word-noise. It reminded me of the Keseyýs dull ramblings about the ýfogý and the ýmachineý in Cuckooýs Nest. I tended to skim/skip over these parts.

            2) I canýt help but wonder what really motivates a person like Annie Rogers to bare her soul to an audience. Granted, she wrote a wonderful and interesting book that contributes to the writing on psychotherapy, but I still think itýs suspect, like to some degree she sold herself out. I find a real beauty and self-respect in anonymity, especially for a psychotherapist, so when someone voluntarily gives it up, I canýt help but question why. (Grandiosity? Career enhancement? Shaming her bad therapist? Getting her good therapist to love her more ý and to live up to his prophesy?ýor perhaps just ýlook, mommy, see how great I am!ý)

            3) I also find it suspect that her ýgreatý final therapist pushed her so hardýyet so subtlyýto become a writer. What was in it for him to mold her as such?

4 out of 5 stars A starting point to find insecurity within yourself.......2007-07-07

I've read the other reviews claiming this book doesn't live up to expectations. Whilst I agree in some ways, and did find it often repetitive, I personally got a lot out of it. By taking the time to reflect after each chapter on how it applied to my life I was able to better process this. A big part of me wanted to jump straight to solution mode but by working through my own "stuff" and looking back on my childhood etc I was able to better understand my own insecurities. After that I basically came up with the solutions on my own - it all comes down to self awareness. Too often we rely on books to help us solve our problems rather than use them as a key to unlock our own ability to help ourselves. Dont dismiss this book as I believe it has a lot to offer and has helped me immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful ........2007-01-05

I agree that the author does not provide specifics on solving the problem of insecurity. However, I don't think that was his purpose in this book. He focuses on providing an understanding of the tenderhearted personality type. The information was very helpful to me, opening my eyes up to aspects of this issue that I had not considered previously. I learned a lot from this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Tender Heart: Conquering your Insecurity.......2006-08-31

It was the best book I have read on the subject. My husband read it as well. Really explained a lot--it was like a light bulb went off. Excellent! I even bought another copy for my son.

1 out of 5 stars Conquering your Insecurities...title is VERY misleading!.......2005-07-30

This book did have a great start... I was flipping through the pages reading, and I was left with a one page- "how to"... I thought that this whole book was to HELP you conquer your insecurities, not just give you a quick little "over-view" of what you're SUPPOSED to be doing...
The title is misleading, and I definently wouldn't recommend this self-help book to anyone!

              2 out of 5 stars Subtitle inacurate.......2004-06-26

Yes - this book did have a great start... I was flipping through the pages reading each one carefully waiting to see where the author gets to the "conquering your insecurites"... I was left with a one page- three step recipe to acomplish what the book claims. The title is misleading... maybe it was done so purposefully to write part II?

              Book Description

On the heels of the hugely successful "California Wine Map", The Wine Appreciation Guild has just released the "Quick Access Napa-Sonoma Wine Country Map and Guide" spotlighting the wineries and vineyards of the country's wine capital. This full color, topographically precise map is the most comprehensive Napa-Sonoma wine map on the market with over 400 wineries and vineyards.

"Quick Access Napa-Sonoma" features a detailed listing of wineries and vineyards in Napa and Sonoma Counties, including name, address, phone, tastings and public or by appointment only tours. It also lists area tasting rooms and gourmet groceries. The map's simple accordion fold makes it easy-to-use, even when opened to its full size of 12 x 26 inches. And one doesn't have to be the rough and tumble itinerant to appreciate that it's laminated.

"The success of our recent 'California Wine Map' told us that people not only appreciate California's wine country, but also appreciate an accurate, well-made, user-friendly map," said H. Hesse, a mapmaker since 1967 and founder of Global Graphics. "The number one request we received was for a map focusing specifically on Napa-Sonoma and we were delighted to once again combine our passion for cartography with our appreciation of this beautiful area."

The California Wine Map became a quick favorite among the states professional wine country day-trippers. Charles E. Olken, wine writer for the Los Angeles Times called it "One of the best and least expensive guides on the market," and American Airlines American Way magazine declared it a "must have." Anthony Dias Blue on KFWB-FM (Los Angeles) said, "If you travel in search of wine, you're going to love the California Wine Map. This isn't just one of those slick brochures published by the local wine-country tourist board. It's a full-fledged, state-of-the-art, satellite-generated map of California made by a well-known cartography company called Global Graphics."

The California Wine Map was also highly recommended by The New York Times, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Oakland Tribune, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Wine & Spirits Magazine.

Global Graphics maps feature full color thematic cartography, based on satellite photography and global information systems, and use data from several sources to ensure information is up-to-date and complete. Global Graphics maps are among the most accurate and user-friendly on the market.

worst map I have ever used. Save your money and pick one up at the wineries when you get down there - they are much more accurate (surprise!)

5 out of 5 stars A must-buy for your next wine country tour.......2006-06-15

For my latest trip to Napa/Sonoma wine country, I purchased several books beforehand in the hopes that, among all of our choices, we'd be able to find the perfect, off-the-beaten-path winery. We did in Tres Sabores, although sadly most of their wine had been damaged in a fire.

Having a good book or two on the wineries and restaurants is helpful, but in the end, this map, with it's simple laminated 4-fold design, road map with wineries and tasting rooms labelled on one side, and on the other side, an alphabetical list of wineries, their hours and phone numbers, was the most useful.

Whatever the price, this clear and comprehensive tool is worth three times as much. And definitely stop by and have a chat with the folks at Tres Sabores.
