From their departure in North Carolina to the beginning of the Twentieth Century, some guarded secrets are included. Most of this book is pure history, but presented in a historical novel format, but pictures and awards authenticate most of the details. Book Description

Sugar Ray Robinson (1921-1989) was hailed as the finest boxer to ever enter a ring. Muhammad Ali once called him "the king, my master, my idol"-and indeed, he was the idol of everyone who had anything to do with boxing. But for African Americans, he was more than a great boxer. In an era when blacks were supposed to be humble and grateful for favors received, he was a man whose every move in and out of the ring showed what black pride and power meant. Sugar Ray grew up during the Depression in the ghettos of Detroit and New York, rose through the amateur boxing ranks, became Golden Gloves champion at the featherweight at the age of eighteen, and become world welterweight champion in 1946 and middleweight in 1951. Robinson had it all, but later lost it all; and in this classic autobiography he tells it all with remarkable candor. Here is Sugar Ray: the dazzlingly handsome champion with a craving for fast cars and fast living; the kid who was terrified of elevators; the young GI who, together with Joe Louis, combated racial discrimination; the honest fighter who refused a million dollars to throw a fight against Rocky Graziano; the boxer who dreamed he would kill his opponent in the ring, and did so the following night. This Da Capo edition is supplemented with a new foreword and afterword by Dave Anderson about Sugar Ray's last years in Los Angeles and the legacy he left behind, and with eight new pages of stunning photographs.

        5 out of 5 stars Sublime grandness!.......2006-12-26

To talk about the grandness of Sugar Ray Robinson may seem a commonplace, but in the annals of the boxing there has not been such kind of boxer who has displayed such style, refinement, effectiveness and elegance. 109 KO along his life and the fact to have recovered four times the World championship have become a true myth in this sport.

A champion among champions. One of the greatest of all time tells you his story - he is a fighter, not a writer. Don't expect pretty prose, expect a deep, moving look into the life of Sugar Ray Robinson.

it is what it is. you get Sugar Ray's story right from the man himself. its concise and thorough and entertaining and inspirational

        Sugar Ray - 3.75 Stars

I wanted to love this book. I wanted to love Sugar Ray - he was Ali's hero and in a lot of circles he is considered pound for pound the greatest boxer of all time!

I wanted to love this book and Sugar Ray - but unfortunately I didn't.

I almost feel like I'm committing some sort of sacrilege here - and I'm sad to say - I found Sugar Ray Robinson somewhat unlikable.

The story is a great story - a very poor family's struggle and their support and love for each other - Sugar Ray's discovery of boxing and his rise to fame and fortune and the phenomenal and heart breaking comeback and the sad decline in the end. His story really is very interesting, but the book doesn't capture it. It doesn't capture the Sugar Ray magic and I felt that Sugar Ray wasn't 100% honest - he and the book were truthful, but I felt that there was something missing - that he wasn't completely honest.

          Book Description

In 1959 a group of Miccosukee Indians, frustrated in their attempts to gain official recognition by the United States, met with Fidel Castro and were recognized by the Cuban government. The man behind this unprecedented move to provoke the United States government into action was Buffalo Tiger, a Miccosukee elder who has become one of the most prominent Indian leaders in the southeastern United States in the modern era. This book is the story of Buffalo Tiger's life, told in his own words. Born in a small village in the Everglades in 1920, Buffalo Tiger grew up immersed in the traditional customs and language of the Miccosukees. Making their home for generations in the remote reaches of the Everglades, the Miccosukees were able to retain much of their older way of life well into the twentieth century. As the modern world encroached on the Miccosukees and the Everglades shrank around them, Buffalo Tiger became an energetic and outspoken leader of the community. He and other Miccosukees fought for years to escape the shadow of the larger, better known, and more politically powerful Seminoles. As the first tribal chairman of the Miccosukees, Buffalo Tiger oversaw the adoption of a tribal constitution and worked diligently for reforms and to protect the community's cultural and natural resources. In the 1970s the Miccosukees became the first modern tribe to take complete control of their affairs and federal budget. Buffalo Tiger's penetrating observations about his people and the world around them, combined with the skilled scholarship of historian Harry A. Kersey Jr., strikingly illuminate a memorable life, a tireless leader, and an Indian community still proud to call the "River of Grass" its home. Harry A. Kersey Jr. is a professor of history at Florida Atlantic University. He is the author of several books, including An Assumption of Sovereignty: Social and Political Transformation among the Florida Seminoles, 1953-1979 (Nebraska 1996) and The Florida Seminoles and the New Deal, 1933-1942.

          Book Description

Texas native James Farmer is one of the "Big Four" of the turbulent 1960s civil rights movement, along with Martin Luther King, Jr., Roy Wilkins, and Whitney Young. Farmer might be called the forgotten man of the movement, overshadowed by Martin Luther King, Jr., who was deeply influenced by Farmer's interpretation of Gandhi's concept of nonviolent protest.

Born in Marshall, Texas, in 1920, the son of a preacher, Farmer grew up with segregated movie theaters and "White Only" drinking fountains. This background impelled him to found the Congress of Racial Equality in 1942. That same year he mobilized the first sit- in in an all-white restaurant near the University of Chicago. Under Farmer's direction, CORE set the pattern for the civil rights movement by peaceful protests which eventually led to the dramatic "Freedom Rides" of the 1960s.

In Lay Bare the Heart Farmer tells the story of the heroic civil rights struggle of the 1950s and 1960s. This moving and unsparing personal account captures both the inspiring strengths and human weaknesses of a movement beset by rivalries, conflicts and betrayals.

Farmer recalls meetings with Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Jack and Bobby Kennedy, Adlai Stevenson (for whom he had great respect), and Lyndon Johnson (who, according to Farmer, used Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., to thwart a major phase of the movement).

James Farmer has courageously worked for dignity for all people in the United States. In this book, he tells his story with forthright honesty.

First published in 1985 by Arbor House, this edition contains a new foreword by Don Carleton, director of the Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin, and a new preface.

I was able to sit in a lecture class of Dr. Farmer at MaryWashington College. Dr. Farmer was able to to convey to us thestruggle that he and other civil rights leaders went through. His powerful voice, coupled with his compassion for the subject made it the best class I have ever taken. Dr. Farmer is a tribute to all Americans.

5 out of 5 stars New Appreciation for an American Treasure.......2004-11-13

This is a superior book throughout. If you're a Bradbury fan, Eller & Toupence will give you a new appreciation of an old favorite. The biographical details and info on the pulp magazine world of the 1940s and 1950s were eye-opening as well. Reading this, I came to understand how Bradbury worked his ass off to bring us the stories and books that have become part of American culture. On their best days, Poe and Hemingway couldn't touch R.B. Kudos to Eller & Toupence for their fantastic work. (I recommend, though, skipping the lengthy introduction, which is an academic-style snooze, unlike the rest of the book). Here's hoping mainstream literati will read this, and celebrate Bradbury as the genius he is. In other words, a damn fine effort.

Reader's Comment: DuBois Speaks, by W.E.B. DuBois

          Encyclopedia of Struggle
These articles and speeches constitute an encyclopedia of the U.S. Black liberation struggle, and to a lesser degree, the freedom struggle in Africa, especially when combined with his first volume covering 1890 - 1919.
Dubois was a leader of the Black struggle from the late 1800s through much of the 1900s. A founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and editor of its magazine from 1910 until 1934, he also organized the Pan African Conference in the 1920s. He was a fighter against U.S. government imperialist wars and during the cold war he was outspoken against McCarthyite witch-hunts.
Born in 1868, he witnessed and experienced the results of the defeat of Radical Reconstruction following the U.S. Civil War. He witnessed the rise of the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 60s and, having renounced his U.S. Citizenship, he died in Ghana in 1963.

5 out of 5 stars The sharpness of a great mind directed against racism.......2003-01-20

What struck me with these articles and speeches--after mainly knowing Dubois from his larger works--is the rigorousness of his mind, and his great literary gifts. Some of the writing is thrilling just as writing. Also quite interesting are his analyses of Garvey and his attempt to look back at his debates with Booker T. Washington particularly on industrial versus academic education.

Dubois was never a Marxist. In 1916 he shocked general Black opinion by supporting the racist segregationist Woodrow Wilson for president and for his support to US participation in World War beliving that Black participation would further progress for Black people and give supporters of African liberation like himself influence in the peace settlement, a cruel illusion. Likewise, during the 1930s, Dubois tended to be taken in by Japanese imperialism's claims to defend all of the "colored races" against US and American imperialism. During the Second World War, Dubois supported Washington's imperialist war, although he criticized the segregation of the US war machine.

In the late mid 1940s W.E. B. Dubois confused his own progressivist liberal politics with the similarly proliberal policies of the American Communist party and Maoist China. He even became a member of the CPUSA, and left the country for exile first in China and then in Ghana.

However, it is very clear that long before this confusion, Dubois understood that American racism was rooted in the world-wide pattern of imperialist domination of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Dubois' ideas and speeches are needed to complete understanding of racism and imperialism.

5 out of 5 stars A book for all humanity!.......2003-01-03

Definitely read these speeches and writings by W.E.B. DuBois! They're exciting, eye-opening and inspiring, a call to struggle for the best we can make of humanity.

For much of the 20th century, W.E.B. DuBois was a leading figure in the fight against segregation, lynchings, race prejudice and oppression in the United States. He campaigned against the pervasive stereotypes of Afro-Americans, publicizing their accomplishments, abilities and stature as human beings. He challenged AFL unions and the Socialist party to reject the racist practices of the day and to united Black and white workers in a common struggle. He was outspoken opponent of colonial oppression and imperialist war and of the McCarthy witch hunt in the United States in the 1950s.

There 36 articles and speeches cover a fascinating range of topics: from the Marcus Garvey movement in the 1920s to the debates on education and the role of Afro-Americans in the post-Civil War period, from the fight against lynching to the anti-colonial freedom struggles of the 1950s and 1960s.

One of my favorites is his 1929 speech at the Chicago Forum where he debated a prominent racist, and white-supremecist, Lothrop Stoddard. DuBois fiercely attacks the myths of race supremacy, arguing that whether "Nordic, Mediterranean, Indian, Chinese or Negro... the proofs of essential human equality of gift are overwhelming." He exposes the economic interests behind race oppression and champions "the black and brown and yellow men [who] demand the right to be men." Don't miss this one!

              Book Description

Alvin F. Meyer has lived life to it's fullest, and now, with an octogenarian's complacency, he walks down memory lane to gather the laurels of success with nostalgic pride. Born into the Weil-Meyer family and heir to wealthy grandparents, Alvin chalked his way through various schools to Virginia Military Institute, hardly affected by the Depression of the 1930's. His career took him places and he found himself tied up with people who left a lasting impression. The foundation of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and the creation of the United States Air Force Biomedical Science Corp earmark his illustrious career. Sprinkled through it are his personal moments with his wives, children and family that cement the loose ends of his life. An interesting and candid autobiography of a well-lived and well-fought life.

                  Book Description

Amalgam Illness: Diagnosis and Treatment starts with a detailed explanation of why to consider amalgam illness to be something that some people must have by comparing the well known statistics for how much mercury people absorb from their fillings to the well known statistics of how sensitive different members of a population are to a given toxin. This is for people who really don't know if they believe in amalgam illness or not (the other material available is rather sensational and I can't blame anyone reading it for having questions) before going any further.

Amalgam Illness: Diagnosis and Treatment discusses how to deal with physicians if you think you have a controversial disease - especially if you have the great "luck" to be covered by a managed care plan.

A key section is devoted to diagnosis - how to tell if you actually have amalgam illness instead of something else. It is also possible to be mercury poisoned from something other than amalgam, and the testing and examination described here is diagnostic regardless of the source.

How to get the dental work done safely if you have decided amalgam fillings are the problem is briefly described - there is a robust industry of amalgam free dentists if you know how to look for them.

The use of drugs and nutritional supplements to get the mercury out of your system is carefully presented - there are some important factors here that are not well described in the previous books on the subject and not all physicians who claim they know what to do actually give good advice.

Then comes what turns out to be the major section of the book - how to treat all the related health conditions amalgam illness can cause so as to relieve them while mercury detoxification proceeds. Since amalgam illness is not widely recognized in the medical community, most people with it get pretty sick before they get motivated to bounce around between doctors and eventually end up in front of one who tells them about it. So most victims have pretty serious, unpleasant health problems (like fibromyalgia or severe allergies) and they really need to make these STOP for the year or two it can take to get fully detoxed and let your body heal.

There are extensive tables of what to use for different conditions, a description of all the drugs and nutritional supplements suggested in the book, and appendices covering things like what the assorted clinical laboratory tests you might get actually mean, what other helpful books are that you might use, and supporting information like what the chelating agents are and how they work.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Life Saver.......2007-03-31

My wife who is in her 30s, has never smoked, eats a very healthy diet, exercises daily, and in general has a very happy life. She started to have health issues that progressively got worse over the past three years. Things like, loosening teeth, hot flashes, nerve pain, racing heart, heart thumps, panic attack, immune system decline, insomnia, problems with certain foods. In one year alone we racked up thousands of dollors in co-pays and prescriptions. All of the conventional tests, blood tests, x-rays, CAT scans, EKGs the doctors used could not identify the cause. The doctors began to say, "you are young and can't possibly be really sick it must be in your head."

We began to do our own research and noticed that she had a very bad period with many ER visits shortly after having a large old Amalgam removed by her dentist. This is when our research led us to Amalgam Illness. We asked our doctor to test for Mercury. When the blood test came back she was over the limit. We finally had our first real clue to what was causing my wife's health issues. Even though there are millions of people who have Amalgam fillings in their mouth and are suffering various degrees of Amalgam Illness the Dental and Medical communities are not ready or willing to address the issue.

This book however does address the issue in great detail. It is written at a college reading level and so may be challenging to read for some, but it is well written and has excellent content. It in detail expains what the illness is, what the symptoms are, how to help relieve the symptoms, and most importantly how to recover from the illness. The book has greatly improved my wife's quality of life and enabled us to get her on a real path to recovery.

Thank you Dr. Cutler for writing this book! I only wish the government would address this issue. Just imagine how many people have this illness and are being wrongly diagnosed and medicated, not to mention the millions of dollars being wasted.

                  Sincerely,
                  Robert Brown

5 out of 5 stars The Book Brought Me Back To Life..........2007-03-21

3 Years ago I was suffering from many of the symptoms of heavy metal poisoning. I did not really know what was wrong and I attributed many of the symptoms to stress and the beginning of middle age. I consulted a dr who wanted to put me on hormones, and a naturopathic dr. The ND took a full medical history and informally asked me if I had silver fillings. It turned out I did, I had many of them including one that had broken several years before and was continuing to crack. I could taste metal in my mouth. I then was sent to do a heavy metal test, via a "Challenge" test. I was very shocked when the results came back off the charts. I was rather skeptical that this was the source of my problems so I started to do resarch. I talked to people all over the world including firefighters who had been exposed in 911. I talked to the Department of Ecology in Washington State and the E.P.A. I then found Dr. Cutler's book and a support group for Chelation online via yahoo. I sought out additional medical advice. By this time I was very ill, almost bedridden. It was very horrible because I had been quite well most of my life and took wellness for granted. I considered the possibility that if I continued to feel so sick I wanted to end my life. I first did a detox as recommended by Dr. Cutler while your fillings are in and noticed improvement. I then went and scheduled total filling removal. After the removal I was even more sick. I had taken all the fillings out at once, something that is not recommended. It is better to do it in stages. I followed Dr. Cutler's recommendations for chelation and his protocol and I started to recover. Under the guidance of a naturopath, and an MD(who does not want to be named because of the controversy) I did chelation and natural detox using fir saunas and supplements. I have had a full recovery. I still need to chelate but I do it lightly in the spring with a follow up from ND and MD. I followed Dr. Cutler's recommendations to the letter. His book is very clear cut and concise. I recommend it for anyone who thinks they may have problems due to their amalgams. I am not a researcher but I do have common sense. An element which is very toxic out of our mouths, in fact a hazardous waste...cannot suddenly be safe in our mouths. I was told basically off the record by people at the Department of Ecology that this is "a consumer driven issue." In other words they thought it was a good idea to get mercury out of your head, and not let a dentist ever put mercury fillings in your mouth...but due to this controversy they could not say anything on record. Moreover...if you go to the E.P.A. website you will see they are telling dentists NOT to use amalgam fillings. I also had been overexposed to flouride due to a habit of eating toothpaste while on the way to workouts at the gym and not really spitting it out. I thank Dr. Cutler, Andy very much for his work because I believe it saved my health. I think it is very irresponsible for dentists not to let their patients know about the possible dangers of amalgam fillings. It is true that not everyone is sensitive, and everyone gets different results but we cannot ignore the effects and possible ramifications related to heavy metals being in our bodies. This controversy has been around for a long time. The attitude of some researchers is sort of to say, "well not everyone gets this from their fillings so it must not exist" This is not a very responsible position. Not everyone gets lung cancer from smoking, but we now know there is a definite correlation between cancer and smoking. I thank Dr. Cutler very much. I have purchased several copies of the book and given them away to people who have symptoms. I would recommend this book to anyone who currently has silver fillings and has symptoms or no symptoms. Recently a contractor I had hired took his 4 year old to the dentist. She was given 6 silver fillings and became ill and had spotting indicative of a reaction. I shared the book with him and he had these fillings taken out. I would never let my child get silver fillings now that I know about this research. I was most fortunate that the people I worked with were open, and willing to look at other research including studies from Europe, and the basis of the treatment came from Dr. Cutler because of his experiences and the fact he had evaluated other treatments that can cause harm due to how mercury works in the human body. I recommend this book to everyone who currently has amalgam fillings. For the people who say that it is quackery, I challenge you to consider that this was what people have said about smoking, having lead in paint, pesticides, and anything in the environment where people profit until enough people get sick and or die. It is very irresponsible to take this position. Thank you Dr. Cutler for having the courage to do the work and publish it.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2006-06-03

Even though his book could be more organized, I give Dr. Cutler five stars for his content. I have owned the book for over four years and keep referencing it over and over. It outlines a conservative and safe protocol for mercury/heavy metal detoxification.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Information on Mercury Poisoning.......2006-05-16

If you or someone you love has or suspects mercury poisoning, you need this book. Mercury poisoning and amalgam illness are very controversial subjects (at least in the U.S.), and it is often hard to get thorough information on properly diagnosing and treating it. This book is a godsend for those looking for answers.

Some have remarked that this book is too technical and hard to understand. I feel Cutler has tried to explain this complex problem as clearly as possible...however, the fact of the matter is if you do have mercury poisoning, you are going to have to become an expert to have any hope of getting better.

A smiley "feel good" book on fasting and juicing garlic and cilantro may be easier to read and make you feel more secure, but it's not going to solve real mercury poisoning. Your family doctor will most likely ignore you, and even some alternative practitioners may be somewhat confused as to how to handle treatment, potentially causing more harm than good.

Dr Cutler spells out in detail the chelation tests and protocols you need to avoid that make the situation worse. Particularly helpful was the listing of supplements you can use before/during chelation to soften symptoms and side effects. Also essential information on specific details of chelation and testing to gauge how much metal you are excreting (in all cases, my practitioner recommended a different approach, and after I presented the information in the book, the doctor agreed Cutler's method was safer and made more sense).

Had I not found this book, I never would have had the courage and ammunition to take charge of my own treatment. If you are in the same place, and need reliable information, buy this book, read it, find the sections that pertain to you, learn it, know it. If there is information you don't understand, go to the library or get on the Internet and figure it out. A good place to start is learning about Amino Acids, how they function in your body, and which ones are linked to your specific symptoms. A great companion on this subject is Michael Lesser's "The Brain Chemistry Plan". I carry a copy of Lesser and Cutler's books in my backpack at all times.

                  Thank you Andrew Cutler.

5 out of 5 stars The only one that works.......2006-02-25

I was almost dead. This works. First energy came back to me for each round of detox. Then allergies lessened, joint aches went away, stomach problems decreased.. Well, poisonoed people can have hundreds of symptoms, I wont count to 100. Read his forum on yahoogroups for more info.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Book.......2007-06-02

When I ordered this book I was very excited about it. I love fruit, and using it in cooking for me is always fun. When I use fruit in savory dishes I do it to be innovative and for something "new," but when I use fruit it dessert, it's for elegance, and style.

This book did not dissapoint. There are recipes for almost every fruit imaginable, most available in any grocery store, along with some beautiful photos of some of the finished and plated desserts.

The book starts with the authors, Mr. David Lebovitz, acknowledgments, and continues with a foward by Ms. Deborah Madison. This is the first book of Mr. Lebovitz's I've owned, and seeing how great this one is, must now get his other, Room for Dessert.

Then there is an introduction from Mr. Lebovitz, including some tips, techniques, and a section on different types of fruits.

There are then seven chapters, seperated by fruit catergory, full of recipes.

Apples, Pears, Quince, and Rhubarb - Included are fourteen recipes, mostly for apples and pears. The quince and rhubarb being included in this chapter, since they don't really fit anywhere else. There are six recipes for apples, one being a tempting spiced apple charlotte with cider sabayon. There is one recipe for quince; quince marmalade with manchego cheese. Then six recipes for pears, including; stilton shortcakes with honey-poached pears and cornmeal shortcakes with spice-baked pears. This is followed by a single recipe for rhubrab; rhubarb tart with almond nougatine.

A chapter for tropical fruit follows with ten recipes. There's a papaya recipe for papaya cake with coconut glaze, then a tropical version of baked Alaska, reightly re-named here, a baked Hawaii. There's two mango recipes, and three pineapple recipes, including one for a caramelized pineapple flan. There are two banana recipes, and a recipe for mango and lilikoi butter.

Next is a chapter full of citrus fruit desserts, with nineteen recipes, nine being for oranges, or one of their counterparts. The orange recipes include orange allspice cake with brown sugar glaze and ricotta cake with candied orange. There are then three lime recipes, the best being the lime-marshmallow pie, a single grapefruit recipe; pink grapefruit champagne sorbet, and six lemon recipes including; lemon-ginger creme brulee and gingery lemonade.

There is a whole chapter for dried fruits, which I believe are under-used in America. Mr. Lebovitz has managed to take these under-rated fruits, and come up with fifteen recipes including them. Most recipes include more then one fruit, so it's impossible to seperate them by fruit, like in the other chapters. Some examples of recipes included are; pear and fig chutney with bittersweet chocolate mousse, date ginger and candied pineapple fruitcake, and peppery chocolate-cherry biscotti.

There is then another chapter of more misc type fruits, that seem to hard to group with any other fruits; Figs, Grapes, Melon, and Pomegrantes. There are only seven recipes, two of them being; fig and raspberry tart with honey and a duo of wine grape sorbets. This is not a bad chapter, but is weaker compared to the other chapters.

There is then a chapter of stone fruits with fifteen recipes, with four cherry recipes including chocolate bread with sauteed cherries, four peach recipes, including the cover recipe; peaches poached in wine syrup, an apricot recipe; apricot and marzipan tart, two tempting nectarine recipes, and four plum recipes, including a spiced plum streusel cake.

The last chapter is devoted to my favorite fruits; the berries. Fourteen recipes are included. There are four strawberry recipes, which seem to be a favorite of everyone, including; strawberries in red wine syrup with almond meringue baskets, a boysenberry recipe, two blackberry recipes, only one blueberry recipe, and two recipes for mixed berries. There's also a recipe for tomatoes.

The only fruit that I find to be missing in the whole of the book is raspberries. Though it is used as a supporting ingrediant in some recipes, it deserves a stand alone one that all other fruits have been given.

Mr. Lebovitz has also included two indexes, one which lists the recipes by type, i.e. cakes and pies, which is handy since the book is divided by fruits, and another general index.

                  5 out of 5 stars Delicious!.......2004-05-18

I am a big fan of David Lebovitz's "Room For Dessert", but was skeptical to try "Ripe for Dessert" because I am not a huge fan of fruit desserts. this book, however, proved me wrong. The recipes are delicious. My favorite was the Lime Marshmellow Pie (although I did use whip cream and storebought graham crackers). A lot of the recipes have fruit on the side and would be delicious without the fruit. I have enjoyed the Chocolate Bread toasted with cream cheese. This is a great book for someone who loves baking and pastry and is looking to get creative. I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner because the techniques are not well explained if you don't understand them already.

4 out of 5 stars Quinces and Gravensteins and Rhubarb, oh my.......2004-01-09

David Lebovitz' new title `Ripe for Dessert' is a word play on his subject of fruits in dessert. The teacher and former pastry chef with Paul Bartoli and Alice Waters at Chez Panisse has done a book composed exclusively of dessert recipes, which include fruit in some fashion.

The chapters divide the recipes into a slightly quirky seven different types of fruit, where type is not determined by botany but by a combination of season (apples, pears, quinces), terroir (tropical), and preservation (dried). The seven chapters are:

                  Apples, Pears, Quince, and Rhubarb
                  Tropical Fruits
                  Citrus Fruits
                  Dried Fruits
                  Figs, Grapes, Melon, and Pomegranates
                  Stone Fruits
                  Berries

The most striking thing about the collection of recipes is that there seems to be not a single classic fruit recipe such as simple Apple Pie or Strawberry Shortcake or Peach Melba or Peach Cobbler. Almost every recipe is original with the author or based on a suggestion made to the author. Many are certainly based on classics, but each and every one has some modification. For example:

Apple Crisp becomes Gravenstein Apple and Blackberry Crisp
Tarte Tatin becomes Apple and Quince Tarte Tatin
Rhubarb Pie becomes Rhubarb Tart with Almond Nougatine
Key Lime Pie becomes Lime Marshmallow Pie
Linzertorte become Peanut Butter and Jelly Linzertorte
Peach Crisp becomes Peach and Amaretti Crisp

There is definitely a place on many bookshelves for this kind of book. But it is important to know that this is what the book is all about before buying it. The author is so fastidious as a baker that he does not use generic pastry crusts. Rather, the crusts are customized to the job at hand. I count this as a major plus in a serious work on baking, but his may not be your particular bowl of cherries. I can see this book being justly popular with people who entertain a lot and need something new for dessert once or twice a month, especially since the book is organized to make finding a particular type of dessert very easy. I can certainly see that this book should be popular with restaurants and caterers and all professional bakers.

One important fact to know about the recipes is that many ingredients are not restricted to their proper chapter titles. Shredded coconut, for example, is something like the grated Parmesan cheese of the dessert world. It gets sprinkled on lots of different recipes.

These recipes are all very good. But, they reminded me of a comment on a TV documentary on a pastry competition where a team lost out because their tastes were just too unfamiliar to the judges.

The few pictures in the book are competent. The style of the book is a bit garish. I would have been happier with a nice sedate Alfred A. Knopf treatment to the book design rather than the hot pink and orange colors they chose. I am always pleasantly surprised by a bibliography in cookbooks. This would have been just a little better done as footnotes. The double table of contents by fruit and by type (cakes, tarts, cookies, etc) is wonderful. More cookbooks should do this.

If I were looking for a good general-purpose book on desserts including fruit, I would go with Wayne Harley Brachman's new `American Classics' volume. Highly professional treatment of familiar favorites.
This book is good for the right audience.

4 out of 5 stars Another Clever Title for a Cookbook.......2003-11-07

Mr. Lebovitz' first dessert cookbook was called ROOM FOR DESSERT. Now he has given us RIPE FOR DESSERT, a collection of 100 recipes with fruit in them. I have tried his Chocolate Cherry Fruitcake (pp. 132-133) and can testify that it is richly wonderful although I don't think it's really a fruit cake with dried cheeries soaked in kirsch as the only fruit involved. (There are almonds and chocolate chips, however.) His Date, Ginger and Candied Pineapple Fruitcake looks doable as well. I must say that I was hard put to find any other recipe I wanted to try. (This was not my experience in cookbook number 1.) It's all subjective on my part-- food always is I suppose-- but I think one can get too many flavors in a dessert if not careful. For example, I cannot imagine baking Prune, Coffe, Chocolate and Amaretto Tiramisu. Additionally, and once again this is just my personal bias, I enjoy baking cakes. There are few cakes included in this collection. Finally you don't four letter word with some classics. Key Lime Pie is one of them. Mr. Lebovitz for his lime pie does a "creamy homemade marshmallow topping and instructs the cook on how to make homemade marshmallow topping as well as homemade graham cracker crust. Does anybody on earth want to know how to make these two items from scratch? And do they have time?

I have a suggestion for the author's next cookbook. He should all it READY FOR DESSERT and include only quick and easy recipes for those of us who are (a) very busy, (b lazy, (c) poor-- some of these recipes would cost bunches--(d) all of the above.

But if you are looking for very exotic recipes with lots of contrasting flavors, this cookbook is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Yummy fruit desserts!.......2003-10-21

If you love fruit, this is the book for you. But I have to say, the chocolate brownies are truly the best I've ever had!!! Everything is yummy, and unusually for me, everything I made turned out great.

                  Highly recommended.
