Customer Reviews:
Great Recipes.......2007-10-17
This is a great book. I purchased it for my husband and I am reaping the benefits. The recipes are easy and taste great. My husband has lost 10 lbs in 3 weeks using these recipes along with exercising.
The only thing you have to lose is your weight........2007-09-23
Based on the NBC hit show "The Biggest Loser," this colorful cookbook is a plus to anybody's library that is trying to lose weight or even just eat healthy. The promise of the book is that eating healthy can be quick and delicious AND it doesn't have to mean bland, tasteless food- and the book delivers.
Readers will find a short review of the Biggest Loser's way to lose weight- which is sensible- you eat right and exercise. Then comes the heart of the book- over 100 recipes for the various meals like breakfast, snacks, etc. And unlike a lot of cookbooks, each recipe shows you exactly how many calories, fat grams, protein grams, carb grams, fiber grams, sodium, and cholesterol it contains- which is nice for a wide variety of other populations such as those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease.
A sensible and practical cookbook, a lot of people will probably get their money's worth. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if a shoulder problem keeps you from getting all the benefits of lifting weights.
Some really outstanding healthy recipes in here!.......2007-09-13
I really enjoy this cookbook. I'm not much for cooking, but there are recipes for every type of cook in here. I found some really easy ones that I love to make that even my husband enjoys! it's also very motivating to hear from others who have had struggles similar to my own. I'd definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants to live a healthy lifestyle!
A Good Buy.......2007-08-27
This book has a lot of great recipes and they're pretty basic. I use it to give me meal ideas, especially snacks and breakfast. Although a few of the recipes are very similar, it's still chalk full of delicious recipes, not to mention a little info on all the participants and some basics about the biggest loser eating plan. If you're on the fence, I say go for it.
Some good recipes in the book.......2007-07-27
You may have to acquire a taste for some of the recipes, but it worth the effort to at least try them.

Book Description
The Biggest Loser was NBCs surprise hit of the Fall 2004 television season, drawing a passionate audience and prompting people nationwide to start their own Biggest Loser competitions. This unscripted weight-loss drama was based on overweight contestants competing to lose weight and win a quarter of a million dollars with the help of a team of doctors, dietitians, and trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels. On the evening that the first seasons finale aired, legions of fans went to the NBC Web site to look for the diet and fitness plan that the contestants used. It wasnt available to the publicuntil now. With this book, people looking for change can accomplish the same type of radical makeover of their bodies, their health, and their lives that they saw on The Biggest Loser. The book features the food and fitness plans from Bob and Jillian, health advice from the shows medical experts, and motivational tips from the contestants themselves. The contestants compelling stories and reasons for losing weight, dramatic before-and-after photos, and real-life advice provide the inspiration and upbeat attitude that made this show a smash hit.
Customer Reviews:
Biggest loser book.......2007-10-10
Book was very informational and inspirering. The food plan and the exercise plan was very easy to follow. It also helped reading about the biggest losers from season 1 & 2. What helped them, their tips on eating and exercising. Also getting tips from the trainers was helpful.
As good as the TV show.......2007-09-21
"The Biggest Loser" diet suggests limiting your daily calorie intake to seven times your body weight (measured in pounds). For a 200 pound person that means 1400 calories a day. This might be OK for an average weight but I am not sure if the formula is proper for very heavy or very light people. So, from that point of view I find this book not very scientific. On the other hand the exercise plan suggested in the book is pretty reasonable. There are also a lot of other good advice that will help you take a long term control of you weight and will result in a good health: stay away from sugar (except for natural sugars contained in fruits), eat salad before each meal, exercise, and so on. For much more comprehensive advice on adopting healthy lifestyle, resulting in permanent weight loss I rather recommend "Can We Live 150 Year?" by M. Tombak. A lot of free excerpts from Tombak's book can be found at the author's website.
Great Book.......2007-09-13
I love this book because all the recipes are so easy and a lot of them are not time consuming. I like the fact that the book has a lot of simple snack and appetizer recipes.
Fantastic.......2007-09-11
I have the whole series and am giving them as Christmas presents to all my friends that watch the show. I gave one for a Birthday present and she is thrilled, we can all get motivated and loose the weight. Love It!
Great Book!.......2007-07-19
I have found this book to be great! It is a simple plan to follow and very adaptable. The first day, although I was worried I'd be hungry, I felt full and content. I am enjoying this new way of eating. I was inspired because a friend of mine was on last season's show and he lost a lot of weight and to this day looks great!

What an AWESOME book!!.......2007-10-02
I received this cookbook last Christmas from one of my clients. I LOVE this book! I have made SO many of the recipes. Better Homes and Gardens sure knows how to make a dinner flavorful. I purchased this book to give to another VERY busy individual who also has a family that depends on them for dinner. Put the ingredients in and you are DONE!! Some recipes require browning of the meat. Please do this. It makes it VERY tasty.

Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes & Gardens)
The biggest issue I have with cookbooks is that you REALLY don't know what you're getting until you have it in hand and you're reading it...This cookbook is no different...I expected alot of crockpot recipes, but I didn't expect some of the recipes with such unusual ingredient combinations...And what's with adding mushrooms so much or making it spicy hot so much *ICK*...you know, just because you CAN mix things together, it doesn't mean you SHOULD...Oh well, for what it is, it's a good cookbook but it could be better so 4 out of 5 stars it is!
yummy food.......2007-08-11
I am enjoying this cookbook. Out of the last about 6 recipes I tried, I liked 5 of them so that's pretty good!
Great meals.......2007-06-08
I highlight all the favorites and there are lots to highlight in this simple to make cookbook.

An excellent book, has loads of information on calories. I gave this to my wife and she is impressed.

This guide is pretty complete in content and has been helpful. Would recommend if getting diet under control.
Calorie book.......2007-04-10
I have not gotten into this book as I desire as yet. I found it to be very helpful. Has number of calories on more foods that I have found in other books. I am looking forward to using this book to the fullest. I believe it is going to be very beneficial.
Packed with information.......2007-03-26
A useful resource that's packed with information on the calorie content of everyday foods and even fast food restaurant choices.
biggest loser calorie counter.......2007-03-16
This book was very disappointing. It certainly did live up to the reviews I read. I am a physician and ordered ten of these books for the patients I teach diet therapy to. The book was difficult to find items in the manner that they were subdivided. Once the subdivision was found, it was then noted to be limited, and certainly not very comprehensive.

Customer Reviews:
good book.......2007-09-15
Has a lot of no noncence recipies .It is not flsahy but the recipies work .
A Let Down.......2007-08-29
i was hoping to expand on bread machine recipes from the booklet that came with my mahine. This book has tons of recipes, but they're all pretty much the same, just switches flavors. Imagine any kind of fruit and nut combo bread, and they put it in there.I was hoping for more variety as far as type o fbreads and dough. Plus they have alot of sourdough recipes, which takes three days to make sourdough, somethinig I'm not inclined to do. It was kind of a disappoinment. i did try the banana bread recipe, but it came out like reguar white bread with a banana flavor-not very good.
Big disappointment.......2007-08-16
So sorry I wasted my money on this book. The recipes are too large for my machine. Some of them sound good, but since I have a 1 pound machine and all the recipes are for 1 1/2 & 2 pound machines, they did not do me much good. I was not expecting the soup and sandwiches portion of the book, either. If I had wanted soup recipes, I would NOT have bought a cookbook about making bread. It is a very nice looking book, however and lays flat for easy reading. The recipes are easy to read, also. Format is good.
Well designed, but slightly complex recipes.......2007-07-11
I have no complaints about this recipe book except that many of the recipes are very complicated and not basic. For instance, there is no basic honey wheat bread recipe. Every recipe has on average about 15 different ingredients, which is not very basic and makes utilizing the recipes a bit tedious when you have to hunt down ingredients, like gluten, rye flour, etc.
So-So.......2007-06-09
The first time I tried a recipe from this book, I thought it had too much salt and not enough yeast. I was right! Since then, I have increased the yeast by about 1/3 and decreased the salt by about 1/3, and they are about right.
The alternating orange & blue type is supposed to make it easier to read, but it makes it harder. For some reason, you tend to skip the orange lines. Be careful not to leave out ingredients!
I do like that there are separate lists of ingredients for medium and large loaves of bread, and the recipes tell you which cycle is recommended for each recipe.
I wish there were some pictures of some of the recipes. No pictures makes it feel like a cheap, fund-raising textbook or something. It doesn't feel like a professional recipe book.

My kids are in love with this book!.......2007-01-18
My seven year old thinks this book is the best gift he has gotten all year! He giggles and comes and tells us the joke he has read and then reads some more. If you want your boys to read this one will help. It doesn't hurt to bring a bit of laughter into the lesson either.
Jokes for granddaughter.......2006-04-23
I e-mail my [...] granddaughter jokes often, the cornier, the better. She loves corny humor. I thought I would have a never-ending supply with this big book of jokes, but I have to hunt to find short, simple jokes for her. I would say that the book is for an older audience than first graders. It has a lot of good material in general, but too many long jokes in my opinion.
suks comepletely.......2006-03-29
this joke book suks. if i can give it any star i want, i would give it a -10 stars. i never actually bought it, but i borrowed it from a friend. i needed a joke book for my anouncements on the intercom every morning, and it only lasted 3 days and i ran out of good jokes. some of the jokes arnt appropriate and most of them dont make sense. if your gonna buy a joke book, dont buy this!
Hey, kids like it.......2005-09-05
This book has some (okay, maybe even a lot of) un-funny jokes that don't make much sense (non-sequitar), but it has some good ones and my younger siblings enjoy reading it.
Some material not appropriate for children........2005-05-02
"If a nut on the wall is a walnut, what is a nut in the bathroom? A pee can."
"Why did the baby cross the road? She was stapled to the chicken."
Billing itself as "the mother of all joke books", The Jokelopedia has the apparent goal of turning your child (or grandchild, etc.) into a comedian. Categorized by subject matter such as a monster jokes, classroom distractions, family funnies, etc., the book contains riddles, jokes, cartoons, and tips from famous comedians. Many of the riddles have pun-ch lines consisting of puns: some that I consider funny, and many of which adults will consider groaners, but will get a lot of giggles from 8 year-olds.
Although I tend to like puns more than the average person, as a practitioner of non-violent communication, I don't recommend giving this book to children. I am concerned that roughly up to 10 to 20% of the laughs come at the expense of becoming desensitized to the suffering of animals and humans. For example, there's a joke about a woman who buys a parrot, and to get the bird to talk, she buys a mirror, a ladder, a bell, etc. She goes back to the store and reports that the parrot died. The clerk expresses his sorrow over her loss and asks if the parrot ever said anything to her. The woman replied that just prior to dying, the parrot said, "Doesn't that store carry any food?" So the joke is that the parrot starved to death because the woman was too stupid to buy food in addition to all the accessories. There are riddles that have punch lines at the expense of animal suffering, for example, "What's black and white and flat? A panda that's been run over." And the tacky frog in a blender joke, mentioned by a previous reviewer, could give a child the idea to actually try this (likely very few children but it's possible). Although much of the egregiously tacky material is in the "Snot funny" section, there is some in other sections of the book.
Another reason I don't recommend the Jokelopedia is because of the practical joke recommendations. The child who tries out these suggestions will probably think he or she is being funny, but those laughs come at the expense of being rude and crude to other people, and insensitive to their feelings. For example, one of their slumber-party jokes is to pour cold water over the shower curtain rod on someone using the shower. Another is to put another child's hand in a glass of warm water to get him or her to wet the bed. Yet another is to put some fake plastic vomit in the sink. One of the elevator practical jokes is to bet the other passengers that you can fit a quarter in your nose. Yuck. Another joke encourages lying: "Tell [your big sister] that one of her friends called (for this to work, be specific--use the real name of someone your sibling is close to and say one of the coolest kids in school is having a party tonight, but you can't remember all the details." In case your budding comedian runs out of practical ideas to play on siblings and parents (yes, a parental practical joke idea involving the kitchen sink sprayer is provided--don't say you weren't warned!), there are five suggestions for tormenting the pizza guy.
One could, as another reviewer did, rip out some of the pages prior to giving the book to a child, or perhaps cross out portions with a thick dark marker like it's a government document. (But if you rip out the page of slumber party practical jokes, the blurb on Lucille Ball is on the other side.) Had I received this book as a child with pages ripped out, I would have been extremely curious about what was missing and sought out another copy! Unless the authors write a new edition that takes out the practical and insensitive to suffering jokes, I don't recommend rewarding them by purchasing this book. That's unfortunate, because I think some of the puns are very clever, and encourage children to have fun with the language.

ASIN: 0618514619 |
Book Description
We are a diabetic nation: according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three Americans born in this century will become diabetic. James Hirsch's myth-shattering blend of history, reportage, advocacy, and memoir will speak for, and to, the 20 million Americans who live with this disease. Cheating Destiny offers revealing views of the diabetic subculture, the urge toward secrecy that many diabetics feel, the glycemic rollercoaster they ride constantly, and the remarkable perseverance-even heroism-required for survival. Hirsch is uniquely qualified to write this book. An award-winning journalist and best-selling author, he has lived with type 1 diabetes for twenty-five years. His brother Irl, also a diabetic, is one of the country's leading diabetologists. Most poignantly, he knows firsthand the toll diabetes can take on parents: his three-year-old son was diagnosed with the disease while Hirsch was writing this book. Hirsch draws on all this expertise to craft an incisive, surprising portrayal of the fascinating science behind the disease and the skyrocketing impact of diabetes on our economy and society. Most striking is his candid, authoritative writing about the psychological and emotional hurdles that diabetics confront every day. Anyone who lives with diabetes-or loves a diabetic-will find here an empowering voice of empathy.
Customer Reviews:
50+ Years with Type I...Hirsch is right.......2007-05-20
I've had Type I diabetes since age 3 and I'm now 54.
The fact that I'm still alive is a testament to the improvements in treatment of the specific type of diabetes I have. Having said that, the incredibly bad training and lack of understanding of most medical professionals is downright frightening. With my years of experience, I know when a medical professional is clueless and can find one who does have knowledge and experience. What scares me are those parents and patients who don't understand and end up being treated by the uninformed or misinformed. Mr. Hirsch gets it right on that count and that is what I consider the key point of an effective treatment plan...start with the very best professionals you can find. Do NOT settle for wannabes with degrees that mean less than nothing! Find physicians who have the disease themselves and are active in research and have well trained, experienced staffs. If your physician gets excited and starts praising you for your 5.0 A1c...and does NOT warn you about the neurological damage to the brain from excessive lows, it's time to find a new endocrinologist.
My last two endos are both type I's who teach at major medical schools. My primary care physicians communicate with the endos and coordinate my treatment...effectively.
Be proactive and research your medical caregivers.
Kudos to Mr. Hirsch for a book that states the truths of diabetes care in our time!
Cheating Destiny.......2007-05-12
As a mother of a Type 1 Diabetic, I was pleased to find a very readable and even encouraging personal story to be your own advocate and responsible for your own destiny.
Disappointing and misleading on several levels .......2007-04-12
I read this book on the basis of its reviews, but I don't understand why it's been so well received. It is eccentric, episodic, and disjointed, as if the author took a number of shorter articles and threw them together willy-nilly. As such, it is neither coherent nor particularly informative. It is certainly not a book for anyone trying to obtain objective, helpful information about management of these two diseases.
I use the term "two diseases" advisedly. I am a Type 2 diabetic (non-insulin dependent) from a family with a multi-generational history of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. My father (Type 2) and his half-brother (Type 1) both died of diabetic complications. Although Hirsch provides a sop to Type 2 diabetics (90% of all diabetics), it is clear that his primary focus is Type 1. Why not just say so? I am not belittling that focus. But Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are different in terms of cause, mechanism of failure at the cellular level, and treatment options.
Hirsch (in common with many "crusaders" for specific diseases) is also outrageously careless with regard to his usage of the word "cure". The fact is that the more researchers discover about the intricacies of the human body, the farther away they find themselves from a "cure" for many, many diseases, from the merely inconvenient to the life-threatening. Modern research and medicine struggle with a myriad of complex, chronic disease processes - it isn't all about money and politics. Therefore, although "cures" are devoutly to be wished for, "mere" successful management of a disease by a patient and his or her doctor should be applauded, not condemned.
In this regard, I take serious issue with his opinions concerning "tight control" methodologies. His comments on Bernstein's diet are specious (and I don't think he was playing devil's advocate). I don't follow the diet myself, but I do successfully practice a 40-20-40-20-40-20 regime. Further, the reversal of symptoms in early Type 2 diabetics is not a "cure" - it is merely a reversal of symptoms. The person remains a diabetic. This is something of which my "ignorant, income motivated" doctor reminds me every time I see him (and believe me, he has amassed far more than "2 hours" of diabetes education over his years of practice!).
I wish I had something more positive to say about this book - the author can be an excellent writer when he chooses to be. But this type of over-the-top selective information does more harm than good.
Type 1 Diabetic.......2007-03-26
I LOVED this book! I have had type 1 diabetes for 24 years and I am very well managed and complication free. This book was interesting and informative in so many ways... the history of diabetes treatment; the hurdles and challenges of treatment & research given today's healthcare system, pharmaceutical industry, rewards systems and cultural landscape; and a first person perspective of a knowledgeable long time diabetic. You may not agree with everything Hirsch has to say, but this is a GREAT read nonetheless.
A must-read for health care providers & those affected by diabetes.......2007-03-21
wow. phenomenal book. The text contains both history surrounding this disease and disuccion about the shortcomings of today's medical care thereof. Hirsch succinctly highligts the critical components of the challenges of the disease & its care. I recommend this to all patients, colleagues, & friends.

beware, buyer.......2005-12-07
This is the first review I ever share on Amazon. I tend to keep my thoughts to myself, but this book is more a pamphlet that leads to their service advertisements. I think someone must bring this "scam" to light. (Please check the number of pages in this "book", then divide by 4 to get the equivalent pages of a book)
The 4 items that this book covers are common sense that any experienced investor and intermediate trader would have developed in the first 3 years at the respective area.
Use the cost of this book and buy a deep out of money contract. It will be more profitable.
The Four Biggest Mistakes in Option Trading.......2005-08-20
Well written and concise. Very very importan for ALL Option traders to own and keep in their library. If anyone understands a little bit about "Implied Volatility", this book is a must!
what a Joke.......2004-08-26
by far a worthless book on options,
the cover looks great, but this has no
value; I learned more on the optionsxpress
website than this book, anyone who has
read an options book would not
appreciate this book it assumes you
know nothing about options and really
tricks you into thinking that the author
knows what he is talking about.
Short and sweet but too theoretical.......2003-10-28
This book is useful in directing novice options traders to the four biggest mistakes usually made in this area. The book does what is says with describing the theory behind the authors arguments but unfortunaly does not provide market examples on how that should be implemented in real life. Having read other books by this author, I am sure he is capable of supplementing his theory with examples . One of the mistakes he mentions is buying only out of the money options and he recommends buying in the money options. Unfortunately he does not address the fact that this approach could still result in a total loss if the option ends out of the money by expiration day. In addition to be successful in trading in the money options your timing needs to be accurate enough to be certain you do not face a total loss. Timing is never addressed in this book and you would need to supplement this by other books that focus more on this area.
Why 5 stars? Even with these shotcomings it is important that beginners know where they can go wrong and then focus on what to do right.
Excellent book that delivers exactly what its title says.......2003-06-20
There are four basic mistakes all beginning option traders make, these are:
1) Relying solely on market timing;
2) Buying only out-of-the-money options;
3) Using strategies that are too complex; and
4) Casting too wide a net on option choices
Relying solely on market timing.
It causes failure because it ignores implied volatility. It can lead to paying far too much to purchase an option. It would be like buying a stock without knowing its P/E, or buying a car without knowing its blue book value. The way to avoid this mistake is by carefully analyzing which options are best suited to achieve your objective. Also, measure what is the current implied volatility of these options and compare it vs. the historical volatility of this option. This will give you an idea of the current valuation of this option, and whether it appears overpriced or underpriced.
Buying only out-of-the-money options.
By doing so, you ignore the probability that the option will eventually be in-the-money. It leads to buying options with little likelihood of profiting. You can get lucky once. But, such a blind strategy is a sure way to get wiped out in option trading. Instead, you should know exactly what is the probability of you making money on each option trades. This entails knowing the "Delta" of a specific option. If an option has a Delta of 20. It has a 20% chance of being in-the-money.
Using strategies that are too complex.
This leads to unfavorable risk\reward situations. First, you should determine your objective and make certain the trade you are going to make can achieve those objectives without more risk than you can handle.
Casting too wide a net.
You will spend too much time wasted looking for opportunities among illiquid options. By doing so, you will waste a lot of your potential returns on the wider bid and ask spreads of these less than liquid options. Instead, focus on securities that have actively traded options.
This book is a real eye opener on option trading.

Best resource of its kind.......2007-04-10
If you're looking for a one-volume price guide -- this is the one. Period. Forget about Beckett.
Super Catalog of Baseball Cards.......2007-02-15
An excellent and quite comprehenwive listing of baseball cards and their values. In fact there is only one set I know of, reviewed by Mr. Lemke a year ago in Sports Collectors Digest, that was not included in the catalog. Still, I would recommend it most highly.
Not all cards are listed, pages were out of order.......2007-02-10
The book is better than most, of course, but it doesn't list many cards. For example, in the 2005 issue, there were cards listed, but in the 2007 issue, those cards were removed for some reason. Plus, in my initial issue, the pages were out of order in about 100 page increments. Thank goodness Amazon replaced it for me and the second issue was correctly paged.
Disappointment .......2007-01-19
I ordered this for my baseball card collecting husband and am very disappointed because the pages are not in order. There is a very large section of pages out of sequence. It makes it very difficult for my husband to rate and price his cards. I would love to return this defective book for a correct one! Then perhaps my confidence in ordering through Amazon would be restored.
Thank you!

About as good as I see out there..........2007-01-10
The 2007 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards has the greatest breadth of any of the baseball card valuations that I've seen on the market, including Becketts. It gives approximate worth for diverse cards in Near Mint, Excellent and Very Good condition, and includes quite a range of cards from the old tobacco cards to card brands that are yet existent. There are numerous items that I'd never heard of, but have stumbled upon, and this catalog has helped 'ballpark' their worth. That being said, there are cards that I have not found within the catalog, but this has been a relatively rare occurence and has not significantly impacted my pursuance of this hobby. There is some occasional disagreement with Beckett's, which perhaps reflects a degree of relativity in value/pricing issues for cards considered by such books, but its diversity of information and almost biblical visage are impressive!
