5 out of 5 stars The best of Bruce's books about the Beatles.......2005-09-07

I bought these books when they first came out, and i wasn't disappointed. I previously read Bruce's book on Vee-Jay - and if you haven't read that then you should check it out too.
The Capitol volumes are easily the best, because they cover the Beatles best records. Everything from Meet The Beatles to Magical Mystery Tour is here, with the singles to match.
You get the album art and labels in full-colour, with info on the records like release dates and sales etc.
He also tells the story behind each release. For example, the famous Butcher cover gets a full run-down, as do the early Capitol singles when EMI had to bully them into releasing them.
Everything you ever wanted to know about the records is here.
A book for collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomonal.......2002-03-19

Beatles fans who thought the bar could not be raised any higher after the legendary Mark Lewisohn Beatles books (also available at Amazon.com, by the way) are in for a real treat. The Bruce Spizer books are a marvel. I have three so far and will buy the fourth one when it comes out. If you are into minute details and great archival images on large glossy high quality paper stock, BUY BRUCE SPIZER'S BOOKS. They are expensive but well worth the investment. They are must haves and certainly more information than most humans should or would care to know about the Beatles on Captiol Records. If there is a Beatle manic on your Xmas list, you can do no better than to splurge on this set of books. They are that good.

Book Description

When Oklahoma attorney Ben Kincaid came to Washington, D.C., to defend a senator caught in a red-hot sex scandal turned murder case, he never dreamed he’d end up trading the courtroom for the senate chamber. And after his not-so-distinguished client stepped down, Ben found himself appointed to complete the sullied senator’s term. Now, having barely gotten his political sea legs, he must rise to yet another challenge: advising the president’s next Supreme Court nominee during the sometimes thorny confirmation process. Luckily, Judge Thaddeus Roush’s popularity on both sides of the aisle looks to make him a shoo-in. Until he decides to out himself on national television–igniting a Beltway uproar and setting the stage for a bare-knuckle partisan brawl.

Forced to scramble for spin control, Ben hastily calls a press conference for the now controversial candidate. But the photo op becomes a tabloid nightmare when, on live TV, a brutally murdered woman is discovered in the judge’s backyard. For the political forces out to torpedo the nomination of a gay Supreme Court Justice, the shocking turn of events is pure gold.

With the secret backing of the president and a made-to-order new candidate waiting in the wings, the cagey senate majority leader and his most ruthless allies mount a smear campaign that would put Joe McCarthy to shame. But Team Kincaid isn’t about to let the best man for the job get derailed.

While Ben uses his best courtroom strategies to wage a war of words, his crack private eye, Loving, hits the capital streets to fight a much more hands-on battle–with hustlers, hit men, and homicidal hoods–as he digs for dirt in places even Deep Throat would avoid. It’s soon clear that this game is anything but politics as usual.

In Capitol Threat, William Bernhardt serves up a resounding one-two punch of political intrigue and legal suspense peppered with a volley of his trademark plot twists, sly wit, and persistent thrills.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Some unlikely twists, but not bad.......2007-06-18

I've read all of the Ben Kincaid series and enjoy the twists and turns, no matter how unlikely. There are a couple of factual issues to be addressed in future printings (i. e. the State of the Union address is delivered in the House chamber, not in the Senate). I still wonder about how Bill does his research for those grizzly torture scenes. Keep up the good work. It might be time to give Ben, Kristina, Loving, and the rest of the gang a rest.

5 out of 5 stars A Court Thriller.......2007-05-30

Readers familiar with William Bernhardt's courtroom series featuring attorney Ben Kincaid; his offbeat partner cum fiancée, Christina McCall; his intrepid investigator, Loving; and his computer maven administrative assistant, Jones, will be riveted by their latest escapades in the complex plot of CAPITOL THREAT.

As a result of solving a tricky case some months prior, the governor of Oklahoma has appointed Ben to fulfill the rest of Senator Glancy's term. Ben is his usual socially inhibited self, fighting his sense of inadequacy, and the rest of his retinue also are not completely comfortable in their new venue, Washington, D.C. Nevertheless, they persevere and in the end prevail. The first important event they attend is held in the Rose Garden, where the President is to announce his nominee to the Supreme Court, Thaddeus (Tad) T. Roush, a well-respected and mostly liked jurist on the Court of Appeals.

The book begins 10 years in the past. The narrator is a thief and a murderer. Irony and fate will find her the "main attraction" at the celebration party held at the home of Roush. Who is she? How did she get there? Why did she suddenly reappear at this time? These questions form a thread that run through the fabric of the novel; albeit the main frame of the story is the uproar started by and about Roush himself.

The next section is titled "Three Weeks Before" and introduces another influential character: Judge Rupert Haskins, a well-respected Republican who expected to be the President's nominee to the Supreme Court. We meet him and his overly devoted wife at a dinner reception where a fire breaks out. The doors are jammed, and all routes of escape are closed off. But Haskins charges to the rescue; he shouts orders and his forcefulness breaks through the panic so that everyone starts moving and gets out --- or almost everyone. An infant can be heard crying in the midst of flames, smoke and heat. Of course the judge saves the tyke and becomes a national hero --- a feather in his cap that is sure to be the ticket that will put a lock on his chances of flying through the juggernauts on his way into a seat on the Supreme Court.

Fast forward to the event at the Rose Garden and the President's Supreme Court nomination announcement. Surprise! Surprise! Thaddeus T. Roush is his pick. The President's speech, Haskins's outrage, the appearance of the "narrator" and what follows is what propels CAPITOL THREAT into the realms of suspense, political drama and timeliness.

The Supreme Court remains a very honored yet elusive body, but William Bernhardt tweaks the curtain that shields the nomination process to discuss how and why a particular person is chosen. He takes us through the goings-on of committee, then hearings in Congress and the awesome task of voting (or not voting) for the nominee on the hot seat getting the third degree. And in Roush's case things are even hotter.

In the meantime Haskins is spinning a web of vitriol and revenge against the world. He wants that seat so badly he can taste it and will do anything to get it. Anything! He has a group of senators who are backing him; they plan to trash Judge Roush and do as much damage to anyone who gets in their way. This ramps up the suspense as the machinations of sore losers usually do.

The architecture of this novel is constructed with every detail fitting together like a lock and key. Bernhardt's keen eye for characterizations makes his players more than cardboard cutouts and more available to readers. The writer's sharp ear for dialogue produces conversations that are acoustically pitch perfect and believable. And he is gifted with a great sense of humor that makes its way into the story with exquisite timing.

The Kincaid novels all have a social issue at their heart. Bernhardt never preaches or proselytizes, but through Ben and his colleagues he certainly gets his point across. Each of his 15 novels is so different and fresh that one can read them in any order, which is a boon for readers new to these works. You can bet that you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars "It isn't personal. It's politics.".......2007-05-14

Ben Kincaid isn't in Oklahoma anymore. The self-deprecating criminal defense attorney is now a newly-minted junior senator, appointed by the governor to fill out the term of his predecessor. Among the decisions that Ben has to make: Will he run in the upcoming senatorial election? Will he finally set a date to marry his long-suffering and endlessly patient girlfriend, Christina McCall, who is also his chief of staff? These matters are soon relegated to the back burner when a series of explosive events suddenly place Ben in the national spotlight.

The conservative Republican president of the United States nominates Thaddeus T. Roush for an opening in the U. S. Supreme Court. The Commander-in-Chief and most everyone else is shocked when, in his acceptance speech, the nominee blurts out, "Ladies and gentlemen, I am a gay American. And I will not live in the closet any longer." The Republicans are unhappy, and they want Roush's nomination to fail in the Judiciary Committee. However, Roush has vowed to fight back, and Ben's mentor, Senate Minority Leader Robert Hammond from Texas, asks him to represent Roush during the committee hearings. Roush has confidence in Ben, who, he declares, does "what it takes to see that justice is served." When Ben reluctantly agrees to assist the nominee, he jeopardizes his career and places himself squarely in the line of fire.

Kincaid is extremely uncomfortable around the smoke-filled rooms of our nation's capitol, where secret deals, corruption, lies, and unbridled ambition trump the American ideals of truth and justice. However, Ben soon learns to play hardball with the best of them, and he does his utmost to boost Roush's chances with all of the oratorical tricks at his disposal. Unfortunately, further revelations about the candidate's past as well as the murder of a young woman in Roush's garden present seemingly insurmountable obstacles to his confirmation. How can any candidate survive so much bad publicity?

"Capitol Threat" is a strange amalgam of lighthearted banter, farce, torture, cold-blooded murder, and insider information about Washington politics. Unfortunately, Bernhardt gives in to the temptation to preach; too much of the almost four-hundred page novel is taken up with speechifying. The narrative is suspenseful enough, and Ben, Loving, and Christina are always good company. However, too many far-fetched twists and turns and a few unrealistic coincidences weaken the book. All in all, Bernhardt had a promising idea and he showed courage in addressing such controversial issues as abortion, homosexuality, and the death penalty. However, the author would have been more successful had he crafted a more coherent, plausible, and subtle story.

1 out of 5 stars Political Commentary.......2007-05-11

The ham-fisted political statements far overshadow the thin plot and character developments. This novel has no particular focus or dramatic intrigue (as opposed to earlier books in the series) and serves primarily as a platform to highlight the author's animus toward any views other than his own. Everyone's entitled to his or her own opinion, but write an editorial for a magazine--don't couch such polemics as a "novel".

2 out of 5 stars Capitol Threat not up to par.......2007-05-07

I am a big fan of William Bernhardt, but this book was not his best by far, for the first time i have been disappointed in the Ben Kencaid series. It was too slow moving, not enough about Ben and his partner and their employees and the personal stuff. The whole book was kind of a waste of time for me and not up to his usual entertaing writeing. I have read all of his books and keep them in my small library and this was the first time I have felt let down by him.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2007-05-07

I bought this book because I was looking for short hikes for our family with elementary-aged children in all the titled Utah Nat'l parks. It does do a good job of describing the hikes in very great detail, how to get to the trail head, etc. Each hike is rated according to it's difficulty and child-friendliness and length of time to complete. This is all very good and helpful. However, I discovered after the fact that most of this same information is available on the National Park Service website and the brochure available for free at the visitor center, including some that aren't in the book.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Hiking Guide.......2007-03-13

I purchased this book prior to a trip to Zion and Bryce National Parks. I've read a number of hiking guides before and found this one particularly helpful. The author gives excellent details both on the difficulty of the hike and what you can expect to see. After hiking most of the trails in both parks, I can vouch for the accuracy of the guide and found the information very useful.

The sole drawback is the lack of color photos which would add far more impact to these descriptions. This is a common failing of this type of book but it a shortcoming even so.

4 out of 5 stars Why The Beatles Hate the LP's.......2007-05-13

During the press conference for the Vancover show in 64,Paul voiced his
disaproval of how the American record company would release anything
as a single. During one of their U.S shows John took a swipe at one
of the LP titles. He didn't have a copy of it & didn't want one. After
buying the Capital Box sets of their U.S. LP's I know know why & you
will too. Growing up in Australia, we got the U.K. versions of their
albums - which are the REAL versions & are better. Read this book & you
will see how the record company milked the music for all they could.
Capitol never wanted them but when they were forced to take
The Beatles...they became the most succesful act to have records released by the label. And you payed for that privilage. A facinating book.

5 out of 5 stars AN AMAZING JOURNEY BACK INTO BEATLEMANIA - PART 2.......2003-07-19

This was the second Bruce Spizer book that I had bought and like it's companion "Part 1 - The Singles" it is an amazingly enjoyable book to behold. I've got these US versions in my collection though they are Orange Label 70's variations. It's great to learn about the logic behind their releases and it's equally interesting to listen to a US "Rubber Soul" especially as I was used to the UK/Australian 14 track version all these years... the US Version sounds like a Folk/Pop/Rock Album ALA the Byrds The "Butcher Cover" saga is a production almost bigger than "Ben-Hur". Bruce Spizer takes you right into the minds of those involved with that drama. No wonder Alan Livingston was reluctant to take those 20 "Butcher" LP's home..he'd had enough of them! The Author's thoroughness is never in question and the quality of his books consistently put many others to shame. The label reproductions are wonderful and helpful if you've bought the original US LP's. To think that now those US LP's are now deleted and replced by their UK counterparts. Overall the quality is superb and Mr. Spizer's books sit in the same class as those of Mark Lewisohn's "Complete Beatles Chronicle" & "Abbey Road" books as well as the massive "Beatles Anthology" tome. While each part stands alone quite well you must buy Part 1 to complete the set as they complemment each other really beautifully. I thoroughly recommend these books to any Beatles fan and lovers of Rock Music books.

5 out of 5 stars Must for Beatle Fans.......2001-05-31

A great book to find treasures with your old LP's. To find out what version or issue numbers you might own. Pictures are extremely good! With glossy photos!!

5 out of 5 stars THE REAL BEATLES ANTHOLOGY.......2001-02-09

This book is the third book of a trilogy that every Beatle collector should have. Starting with the history of VJ, Bruce has fantastically illustrated the Beatles American history on vinyl. With this third edition, Part 2 of the history at Capitol, The photo's, the adverts, and the history itself make this book worthwile in every way.

WELL FOLKS, IT'S FINALLY HERE! THE LONG AWAITED VOLUME TWO OF BRUCE SPIZER'S NEW BEATLES CAPITOL ALBUMS BOOK TITLED, 'THE BEATLES' STORY ON CAPITOL RECORDS PART TWO: THE ALBUMS' (By Bruce Spizer, October 2000). INDEED, I'M RUNNING OUT OF SUPERLATIVES TO DESCRIBE THE INCREDIBLE WORK THAT BRUCE HAS DONE IN THE FIELD OF THE BEATLES AMERICAN RECORDS. JUST WHEN YOU THINK IT'S NOT POSSIBLE, HE IMPROVES HIS PRODUCT EVERYTIME! AS YOU ALREADY PROBABLY KNOW, HIS FIRST TWO BOOKS ('Songs, Pictures & Stories Of The Fabulous Beatles Story On Vee Jay Records' & 'The Beatles' Story On Capitol Record Part One: The Singles') WERE AMAZING CRITICAL SUCCESSES AND EASILY THE BEST BEATLES RECORD BOOKS TO EVER BE PUBLISHED ON THE SUBJECT OF THE BEATLES ORIGINAL CAPITOL & VEE JAY RECORDS! THIS BOOK CONTINUES BRUCE'S TRADITION OF IMPROVING THE BOOK WHENEVER AND WHEREEVER HE CAN. ONE EXAMPLE IS BRINGING TO VIBRANT LIFE THE "ALREADY REALLY GOOD PICTURES" INTO VERY BRIGHT, STUNNING DETAILED IMAGERY! INDEED, MANY OF THE LABELS IN THIS BOOK LOOK BETTER THAN THE RECORD LABELS THEMSELVES! THE STORYLINES AND RESEARCH ARE SIMPLY FIRST RATE. THE ARTICLES SUCH AS THE "THE HISTORY OF THE BUTCHER COVER", ALONG WITH HISTORIES/ILLUSTRATATIONS OF THE BEATLES CANADIAN AND MEXICAN ALBUMS (AND VARIOUS OTHERS) ARE TRULY A BONUS AS THIS BOOKS STANDS STRONG ON THE MERITS OF THE BOOKS MAIN FOCUS, ...THE U.S. RECORDS! ANOTHER HUGE TREAT ARE THE MANY IN-STORE PROMOTIONAL ITEMS SUCH AS ORIGINAL IN-STORE MOTION/STILL DISPLAYS AND POSTERS FEATURED IN FULL COLOR!! YES MANY OF US ASSISTED BRUCE IN HIS EFFORTS, BUT HE TAKES HOME THE TROPHY AND DESERVEDLY SO! JUST ORDER IT FOR YOURSELF AND YOU'LL SAY THE SAME THING I DID.... "I DIDN'T THINK IT COULD BE DONE, BUT THIS BOOK IS EVEN BETTER THAN THE OTHERS!!!" OF COURSE, AS WE HAVE COME TO EXPECT WITH ALL BRUCE'S QUALITY WORKS, EVERY SINGLE ENTRY IN THE BOOK IS ACCOMPANIED WITH FULL ILLUSTRATION! I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT'S IN STORE FOR HIS "BEATLES ON APPLE RECORDS" BOOK WHICH WILL BE OUT IN 2002! ...THE PHRASE "ABSOLUTELY A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY BEATLE FAN AND COLLECTOR" IS INDEED, A PRETTY WORN OUT PHRASE, BUT IT'S GREAT BOOKS LIKE THIS THAT FORCE IT'S USE YET AGAIN!

Book Description

William Bernhardt’s bestselling novels featuring Oklahoma defense attorney Ben Kincaid capture the bare-knuckles reality of high-stakes criminal defense, as lofty ideals of justice clash with power, corruption, and wealth. In Capitol Murder, Bernhardt’s hard-charging hero takes on his most shocking, headline-making case yet.

Kincaid’s legal success has earned him a dubious reward: a journey through the looking glass into the Beltway. Here, in the heart of the nation’s capital, a powerful U.S. senator has been caught first in a sordid sex scandal, then in a case of murder.

Senate aide Veronica Cooper was found in a secret Senate office beneath the Capitol building, on Senator Todd Glancy’s favorite couch, blood pouring from the knife wound in her throat. The young woman’s death comes on the heels of the release of a sordid videotape depicting her and Senator Glancy in compromising positions.

With the senator’s reputation in tatters, the evidence against him–as a sexual predator and possibly a killer–mounts. By the time a nationally televised murder trial begins, Kincaid and his team know they’re facing the challenge of a lifetime. According to public opinion, and even in Kincaid’s most private thoughts, Glancy is one more politician who cannot admit his own culpability.

But while a dramatic trial unfolds in the courtroom–loaded with pitfalls, traps, and an astounding betrayal–another trial is taking place on the mean streets of D.C., as Kincaid’s investigator pursues a young woman who was a friend of Veronica Cooper’s, plunging Kincaid into a bizarre world of Goths, sadomasochists, and a community of self-proclaimed vampires. Somewhere in this violent underworld lies the secret behind Veronica Cooper’s demise . . . and the crux of Senator Glancy’s innocence or guilt.

In a case that pits Kincaid and his freewheeling partner Christina McCall against the brutal machinery of Washington politics, the answers they seek are hidden in a murderous maze of lies and hidden motives. And in William Bernhardt’s best novel yet, getting to the truth is an unparalleled experience in pure, satisfying suspense.

That happened when I realized that: (a) I really didn't care about whether the Senator was convicted or not; (b) I'd found out who the real murderer was 3 CD's before that, and (c) I couldn't stand another political rant about how evil Republicans are and how holy Democrats are. Bernhardt slanders Nixon (easy to do, I know), and Reagan, while showering pity on poor Bill Clinton for his legal troubles, all the while telling everyone how evil the insurance and oil industries are. I could read MoveOn.org if I wanted that.
Give me Tony Hillerman any day.

5 out of 5 stars Rollicking Ride of Suspense and Intrigue.......2007-09-15

Until reading this book, I was unfamiliar with Mr. Bernhardt's character, Ben Kincaid. Now that I've been converted into an ardent fan, I intend to get to know this Ben fellow better. Capitol Murder is a fast-paced fascinating exploration of the mechanisms of national power alongside the subculture of vampire wannabes, all couched in a murder mystery. Mr. Bernhardt's development of standout characters makes the story all the more absorbing. He has figured out how to make a character at once endearing and disgusting. He then places these characters in the hallowed halls and offices of the capitol and the seedy goth clubs tucked into the other, less-explored parts of Washington. Capitol Murder is one of those books I began casually, then found myself tucking into my attache case to read on my lunch break, in the waiting room at the auto repair shop, and on my nightstand before turning out the lights (I might not recommend that one if you're after a good night's sleep). I'm now a fan, and look forward to reading more stories from this storytelling master.

4 out of 5 stars KINCAID IN WASHINGTON, D.C........2007-03-09

I ENJOYED THIS BOOK BUT HAVE SEEN A CHANGE IN WM BERNHARDT'S WRITING.
TRULY SUSPENSFUL BUT HAVE ENJOYED SOME OF HIS EARLIER BOOKS MORE. I HAVE
ENJOYED BEN KINCAID MORE IN THE COURTROOM SCENARIOS THAN IN THE POLITICAL
ARENA OF D.C.

4 out of 5 stars capital job....again.......2007-03-08

Light, exciting with something actually beginning to jell with our main characters. As usual, an enjoyable read.

One of William Bernhardt's best. This one could be made into a movie.

The best book out there for Beatle record collectors...hands down!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Something for every Beatle fan.......2003-10-14

I had heard that Bruce Spizer's books were full of images of record labels, so I wasn't sure I'd be interested in them. A friend of mine who is a serious collector told me this book was the one to start with. As it turns out, it combines lots of new information with a really great trip down memory lane. While I don't find every version of every label particularly interesting, there's a lot in this book that's REALLY great! The opening section on Beatlemania in America is an excellent overview of the subject. The chapters on each of the 45s include great images of picture sleeves and vintage Billboard ads; and Spizer describes in fascinating detail how the songs were written and recorded. It's hard to believe, but Capitol originally intended for "Act Naturally" to be the A side over "Yesterday." This was because in the early days of Beatlemania, Ringo was the most popular Beatle. (I preferred Paul.) This is just one of the great factoids that Spizer writes about and then illustrates - this one with images of Ringo on covers of a comic book and MAD magazine. The last section details how Capitol Records came to be and how the company creatively used merchandising and promotion to sell records (hard to believe the Beatles needed help!) - again, lots of pictures, e.g., actual press kits, etc. Although I skipped over some of the technical information, it's a great reference book besides being a fun read. The information is new, the stories are fascinating and the pictures really help tell the story. This book was completely worth the price - now I'm saving to buy his other ones!

1 out of 5 stars who is this book for?.......2003-09-22

These reviews are very misleading... they led me to purchase this book! Once I got a copy I was beyond disappointed: this book is an extensive collection of record labels. Little more. I mean, who is this for? People who are interested in how 45s got labeled (or often mislabeled) in the 60s? When is says "Beatles story ON capitol records", it means literally.

5 out of 5 stars AN AMAZING JOURNEY BACK INTO BEATLEMANIA - PART 1.......2003-07-19

This was the first Bruce Spizer book that I had bought. It is an amazingly enjoybale piece of work to behold. The thoroughness of the man is never in question and the quality of the book puts many others to shame. The label reproductions are wonderful and helpful if you've bought the original US singles. I've since determined that I've probably picked up a couple of fake Beatles 45's along with the bunch of many originals that I acquired a few years back. Buyer beware but that's luck of the draw I suppose and I'll have to search out original equivalents of those forgeries. This book serves so many useful purposes apart from being entertaining and authorative. Now experienced and would-be collectors can purchase originals better educated than before. Overall the quality is superb and Mr. Spizer's books sit in the same class as those of Mark Lewisohn's "Complete Beatles Chronicle" & "Abbey Road" books as well as the massive "Beatles Anthology" tome. While each part stands alone quite well you must buy Part 2 to complete the set as they complemment each other beautifully. I thoroughly recommend these books to any Beatles fan and lovers of Rock Music books.

5 out of 5 stars Another Masterpiece!.......2000-10-13

I'll make it short and sweet-if your ANY kind of collector of beatles records, then this book is a ABSOLUTE must! As great as the VJ book that was done earlier, this is a MUST HAVE!!!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but trying to cover too many areas.......2007-01-30

This was a decent guide book, but it really tried to cover too many parks at once. It seems like it covers more family type day hikes and not a lot of backcountry and backpacking trails. We used it to plan hikes in Zion National park and Canyonlands - Needles District. The book recommended a hike in Canyonlands National park that did turn out to be awesome (Chesler Park/Elephant Canyon to Druid Arch).

We also used it to plan a hike to the Subway in Zion. In this case, I wish it had given more detail, as we ended up a little over our heads on this hike. The water was a LOT higher than we expected based on the pics we had seen and information we had. Apparently, the water levels tend to be higher in April due to snow runoff. If the book had given more information, we probably would have never attempted the hike at that time of year to begin with. Oh well, I guess you live and learn, right?

In conclusion, I would recommend this to anyone who is planning to visit one or more of the parks for a short period and wants to hit the hightlights. If you want a more in depth hiking trip to one of the parks, I would recommend getting a more detailed guide book specific to that park.

4 out of 5 stars book for foreigners.......2006-02-28

This book is very usefull for a foreigner travelling throughout USA especially as it's almost impossible to find such a book (in France) that focuses on one US state.
The book contains detailed informations concerning Utah's National Parks. Hikers should appreciate it.
I recommand it with pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Hikes for evey level of experience.......2002-05-28

We have just returned from hiking & camping in Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches And Canyonlands (Island in the Sky area), and found this book to be one of the best of any guide book we have used (over 30 years of hiking). The hike descriptions were so interesting I read them again after doing the hike! The description of how one gets to the trailhead in in a separate section titled "driving to the trailheads", which may cause problems for individuals who don't read scan through the chapters first before deciding on a hike. We found the descriptions of the trees and plantlife on each trail very useful and I would not hesitate to buy another of Ron Atkinson's guide books, they are obviously very well researched.

2 out of 5 stars Wow- Beg, steal or borrow another guidebook.......2001-05-22

Just back from a 9 day backpacking trip in Utah, using both this book and Adkison's book on Escalante. It left me with poor trail descriptions, (scarily) poor or wholly incorrect maps, and an "interesting" (read: madman-style insane) style of giving directions to trailheads. I am by no means new to the outdoors, nor to getting to remote trailheads, routefinding, etc; I can say with a degree of confidence that this is the poorest guidebook I have ever purchased. The second star is given for his "reccomended" hikes, which were, on the whole, generally right on.

5 out of 5 stars Ron Atkinson's Hiking Guide to Utah's Canyon Country.......2000-05-16

Many people think that the best way to experience the unique landscapes of canyon lands parks is to drive through them. But you will have no sense of these places unless you get out of your car and take a walk. You don't have to be a backpacker to experience these places on foot. This is a great book for learning about the opportunities for short, medium and long hikes and for finding the hike that is best for you and your physical condition in Utah's great canyon country parks.

    Book Description

Designated by King George V to replace Calcutta as capital of British India, New Delhi was constructed between 1912 and 1929 under the steady eye of architect Sir Edward Lutyens who sought to bring to this British Colony a sense of classicism, order, and institutional beauty. Brimming with more than 300 color and black and white illustrations, plans and photographs, this book presents the most comprehensive examination to date of how this city was envisioned, planned and constructed.

From the massive war memorial arch and resplendent sandstone and marble government house to the spacious gardens and the gloriously imposing Viceroy's House, the evidence of Lutyen's architectural genius is everywhere throughout New Delhi. As architectural historian Andreas Volwahsen discusses the importance of Lutyen's work he provides a fascinating account of the making of a city: the contentious debates and cultural considerations, the inspiration and the painstaking construction, and finally the ways in which New Delhi has evolved into a modern city. With the growing interest in the preservation of historic sights worldwide, this magnificently detailed yet highly accessible history is certain to become a classic in the fields of architecture and urban design.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good insight, great theories.......2005-08-25

The book illustrates and studies many new, as well as older well known theories behind the Lutyens Delhi Plan. Volwahsen demonstrates a tremendous amount of research as well as insight that has gone into the subject, which in turn, make you think for yourself.
A must for anyone remotely interested in the subject.

    5 out of 5 stars Imperial Splendor.......2005-03-02

Wow, this book is incredible, it is quite frankly a perfect book on this subjuct. This book does not leave one leaf unturned, it has amazing B&W photos and the research is impecable, I just kept thinking, this took a great deal of time and effort to put together, that it had to have been a labor of love or they would have never gotten through it. The effort by the British Raj to build Imperial New Delhi from scratch in two decades is a tribute to British imperial power at its zenith. Whether you think it was wrong or right of the Raj to brand its imperial power on India forever, in the form of Western classical meets Indian mogul, you can't help but be blown away by the scope and beauty of Imperial Delhi. Anyone who has any, I mean any, interest in this subject should buy this book, they will not be disappointed, it is a facinating story of the ultimate colonial power and its effect on this amazing country called India. I will have this book in my collection forever and if you knew me you would know that this is high praise indeed.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent treatment of Imperial Delhi.......2003-04-16

As someone who lives and works in New Delhi, I've often thought that Raj Path (the Central Vista) reminded me of Washington DC and Paris, and now my suspicions have been confirmed thanks to Volwahsen. I've been to most of the prominent buildings built by the British in New Delhi and the author does them justice. The book is beautifully illustrated and supported by numerous maps and photos. The text is well-written and knowledgable.

My only criticism (a minor one) is that Volwahsen at times assumes that the reader has more than a general knowledge of architecture. For example, he frequently refers to the "stupa" without ever really defining it (a sort of Buddhist roof style). I would have added an appendix with a listing of architectual terms used along with definitions and context.

This should not detract from anyone's decision to read Volwahsen's work, however, as he has done a masterful job. I heartily recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars good overall book.......2007-09-11

i like this book since it covers all of southern utah. the feature i use most often and like best is the way they rate all the hikes. i do what i can and can't do, how long it will take and whether or not it's appropriate for kids. it also gives useful information such as average temperatures and nearby towns and what they have available such as restaurants, showers, laundry, stores, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Great trail descriptions.......2007-02-15

A great guide. Not only does it have the usual food and lodging recommenddations of usual guidbooks it also has great trail descriptions. this was the main reason I bought the book. Each trail guide is headed by distance, duration, Elevation cahnge, Effort and trailhead location. This info helped me narrow down the best hikes for my allowed time. Three good color maps in the front of the book: Southern Utah, Zion and Bryce, plus the various maps in the book with major roads and unpaved roads in the hiking areas. Highly recommennded especially for planning day hiking trips.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-01-10

I was planning a photo trip to utah and so collected a large number of books on the area. I would rate this book as one of the best and most useful. It gives very handy hints on planning your trip. Most guides have so much info you can't wade through it all. This Moon guide assumes you have only a limited amount of time and helps you make decisions appropriatley. Highly recommended.
