Book Description

At forty–one, Lance Herndon is at the top of his game. A self–made millionaire, he is the owner of ACCESS, Inc., a thriving information systems consulting company. As a prominent member of Atlanta's young, wealthy, and powerful set, he is surrounded by black Atlanta's "beautiful people" whom he wines and dines with finesse. But when he fails to show up for work one day, friends and family start worrying. Their worry soon turns to horror when he is found murdered in his own home, his head smashed in –– in what appears to be either an act of jealous–fueled rage or a seedier sex crime. Now, with a laundry list of ex–wives and lovers, competitors, critics and admirers in hand, detectives must break through the city's upper crust to discover his killer.

Part investigative thriller, part social commentary in the tradition of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Redbone offers a truly intriguing story that channels insight into one of America's great metropolises.

Good true crime story. However, while reading did not know if I was reading a fiction, editorial, social commentary or biography. Suspensful but not well written. Entertaining but jumped around too much ... got more from the Court TV synopsis on the internet.

Wait until this book comes out in paperback. I purchased this book and it was not filled with a lot of details. I watched this case on Court TV and this book came no where close to the actual trial.

4 out of 5 stars interesting true crime book .......2007-03-21

While the 1996 Olympics placed Atlanta on a world stage, someone murdered forty-one years old ACCESS, Inc. computer consulting firm CEO Lance Herndon. Besides his once successful firm that was suffering from financial troubles, the victim was considered a star player amongst the affluent African-American jet set. Herndon was known to have quite the sexual appetite especially for "redbones" petite, light-skinned black women.

One of his redbones, Dionne Baugh, was convicted of killing him as the prosecution pointed out that she became outraged after they had sex because she learned he was not going to help her in court with a charge of trespassing at his home; so while he was sleeping, she killed him.

This is an interesting true crime book because of its close look at the power of affluent blacks in the New South. Thus the background and the victim come across three dimensional especially his sultan like behavior towards his harem. Though Herndon's convicted killer seems to nebulous except for her temper and court date motive, Ron Stodghill provides a solid entry that true crime readers will appreciate.

Although the book is fairly well written, it left too many unanswered questions. I got more information by reading the Court TV files. I agree with the previous reviewer, its not worth the price. Wait for the hardback.

I was a little disappointed with the writing style of this book. It reads like a newspaper article or court transcript. The character development was weak. There was so much more to the personalities involved, but he barely scratched the surface. We know very little about the upbringing of the murderer and very little about the victim, although the author seems to have had plenty of access to close family and friends. With the back-drop of Atlanta, Black class and priviledge, southern culture, etc., this could have been an amazing book! Too bad.

Book Description

"Voyages deep into the frenzied, complex world of LBO transactions."—BusinessWeek

"Sheds light on an important chapter in both African-American and American business history."—Earl G. Graves, Publisher, Black Enterprise magazine

When Reginald Lewis was six years old, his grandparents asked his opinion about employment discrimination against blacks. Reg replied simply, "Why should white guys have all the fun?" Why, indeed! Lewis grew up to become the wealthiest black man in history and one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time, reigning over a commercial empire that spanned four continents. At the time of his death in 1993, his personal fortune was estimated at $400 million.

"Why Should White Guys Have All the Fun?" traces Lewis's rise from a working-class neighborhood in east Baltimore to Harvard Law School and, ultimately, into the elite circle of Wall Street deal-makers. Expanding on Lewis's unfinished autobiography, journalist Blair Walker completes a vivid portrait of a proud, fiercely determined man with a razor-sharp tongue—and an intellect to match. He shows how Lewis's lifelong hunger for wealth and personal glory fueled his success on the playing field, in the classroom, and in the boardroom. Walker also provides a rare insider's view of Lewis, the iron-willed negotiator and brilliant business strategist in action as he finesses one phenomenal deal after another.

A moving saga of personal courage and determination as well as a virtual how-to book for those who would like to follow in Lewis's footsteps, "Why Should White Guys Have All the Fun?" is every bit as memorable as the man whose story it tells.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Enthusiastic........2007-07-05

This work tells the story of a black man who rose to become a top CEO.

Author BLAIR S. WALKER, discusses the chronicle of his subject's private life based on dozens of interviews and also consulting many sources and borrowing on an unfinished autobiography Reginald Lewis wrote shortly before his death from brain cancer in order to give a full and accurate account of this intense, goal-oriented man's life.

If motivation and inspiration is what you seek, you will find it in various chapters throughout the book. Power packed with valuable business lessons on deal making and negotiations, this book has the ability to cultivate your mind set in many a positive ways.

Lewis was a tough- minded narcissistic individual. He was a man set on being an exception to life's ugly stereotypes towards African Americans.

Although the book does fall short in not talking about the deaths of two keystone figures in Lewis's life which was his grand pop and grand mom who were considered some of his greatest strength as a boy.

Lewis and his two LBO's became a greater success than the famous "burning bed" blunder by the former First Boston Corp..

Overall, you will find this book an entertaining read.

5 out of 5 stars A Strong Mind and An Example of How to Achieve Success.......2007-05-29

I was blown away by this book, more so for the similarities between Lewis and myself. I think he was proud of being black but I agree with him that its only an aspect of who you are. Americans as a whole, whether they are black and white tend to group successful blacks as some sort of exception, which is a done and TIRED story. Reginald is a man's man that did things his way successfully. Too bad his life was cut short no telling where he might of been and how much more successful he would have become.

For readers its a look at an intense, fearless, determined, and extremely ambitious man who just happened to be African-American.

5 out of 5 stars Why Should You Enjoy This Book?.......2006-10-22

The Lewis and Walker edition of 'Why Should White Guys Have All the Fun?' is one of the most well-researched and written books that exist from a partial business autobiography/biography standpoint. When you read (and study) this book you feel as if you know Reginald Lewis (Reg) personally. You felt that you have sat at the same table, in the same room, with the same true characters that made him the man that he was.

Reginald Lewis was no saint. But, he was driven by passion and a determination to be the best. Walker (the co-author) has created many things within the context of this book: A bio, a blueprint, an academic view of business, a detailed account (diary) of a very accomplished man. But most importantly, Walker and Lewis together have created a great story. It's more than just mere inspiration, it's a book that when you're done, you will want to make Reg a member of your advisory counsel (the kind that motivates and drives you when their physical presence is no longer here). Reg is now a part of my advisory counsel - and he's given me good advice. Read this book regardless of your ethnic background because it truly drives home a point: We can all have fun!

4 out of 5 stars (Elite Print by biographer Walker);(italics by autobiographer Lewis).......2006-05-01

There was a consistent pattern of the italic matter in which Lewis* kept to his focus "business" and businessman (and bussiness women) and just a brief mention of activity with his wife and children(the book opens with a lengthy discussion of his "humble beginnings" and how his older relatives, especially his grandmother were his greatest strength as a boy, although he does mention his great love for his mother and respect for his step-father and siblings)...His thrill for being accepted at "Harvard" never left him and there is a bldg for law students named after him on Harvard's campus. He gives insight into the wars within in the brokerage world(and how one should be careful what one sells, even with biggies like "McCall Patterns" since if the company should falter in any way shortly after you've sold it,you might be legally held responsible to the buyers) and how "other values" matter more when he gets in swiftly fading health... his biographer ,Blair(co-author of the book published posthumously) does a marvelous insert between the Lewis's italics and also includes : an epilogue(others were left to mourn for him on 01/19/1993); an index ; & a list of all who contributed to "his* story). It was a book worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Bio/autobiography of a superstrong personality.......2006-04-01

I've been reading more business related stuff as of late, and I picked up "Why Should White Guys..." a while back. Reginald Lewis earns tremendous respect in my eyes for his intense energy and willingness to take risks to achieve. Reading this book, you can see what a trailblazer he actually was as he pulled off a seemingly impossible buyout of Beatrice Foods and then drove them to strong economic performance.

I give this 4 stars because I'm ambivalent on Lewis' significance for black Americans. He achieved and he's given back a lot to the community, as evidenced by the Reginald Lewis Library in Baltimore. But this book also reveals that his success was greatly aided by Michael Milken's junk bonds [although in the book's defense Milken was still positively regarded at the time of writing] and he deeply loved being part of Harvard Law School and chose to make a very public donation of a multimillion dollar building to them as he became established.

I think the lack of discussion of some of these issues reflects the time period that this book was written in rather than any fault of the author. This is an authorized biography with large samplings of Lewis' own words. Lewis' amazing rise deserves a full-scale critical biography, and I'll give this a high rating until something else comes out to supplant it.

4 stars.

This was the first book I read by this author and it was better than I expected. The book held my attention from the beginning to end and I hope their is a sequel to find out what happened to one of the characters. I don't want to say too much, but if you have not purchased this book, hurry up and do so. You won't be disappointed. Keep up the good work and I can't wait for your next book.

5 out of 5 stars A misstress indeed!!!! .......2007-08-22

Tiphani has come in the game holding no punches. The Millionaire Mistress is a novel you will not want to put down.

Oshyn and Chloe is two cousin and they both are a force to reckon with. This novel has everything from sex murder and whole lot of twist and plots you won't believe.

3 out of 5 stars The Urban Book Source.......2007-08-13

Meet Oshyn (yea that's right, pronounced ocean) and Chloe, two cousins in the midst of a generation long rivalry. Oshyn is the books good girl, the one you will ultimately end up rooting for, hoping she can wake up and realize the shady things her trifling cousin, Chloe is planning in her own house. Throw together a bit of drama, a dash of betrayal, with a potential for a few cat fights, and we've got a great book right? Well, I wouldn't say great. The pages keep you turning, the story is interesting to say the least, but the ending wasn't satisfying. Maybe there is a part two (hopefully) and maybe there isn't, either way I felt sort of cheated as all the things brought to life in the book wasn't dealt with by the last page. If I must say something in the author's defense, I feel this was a good first attempt, as I was completely drawn in by the first couple of pages and the only reason I cared to know what happened is because she set up the characters in a way that you actually do want to know what happens.

1. What did you like best about this book?
I loved the way the author wrote personalty into each of her characters.

2. What did you dislike about this book?
I didn't like that some of the situation brought up in the book were not dealt with.

3. How can the author improve this book?
I tell the author to either eliminates the frivolous content or completely deal with everything in the end. The readers will want to know what happened. And the only reason they want to know is because what we have read with the exception of the ending was pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-12

Ms. Tiphani,

Girl this book was nothing nice. I was planning on taking it on vacation with me, but I read the whole thing the same day. Oshyn is the good girl in the book, but don't get it twisted because she got something for that A**!!!!!!!!! Chloe is her gold digging, black mailing cousin, that makes every dollar on her back. Chole is so underhanded she wants every thing that her cousin has. So she set out to take over her man and her life. Apples is Oshyns bestfriend they are more like sisters. Apples ex-boyfriend will stop at nothing to take back what he beliefs is his. All of this drama collides in a way that you will not belief. Ms. Tiphani, I hope that you are working on a part 2. This story will not be complete until Oshyn can fill that grave and throw dirt on that BITC*. This book was outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Page turner.......2007-07-12

This book is a quick read. It starts fast and ends even faster. Tipihani has created characters the reader can connect with and want to get to know. She also has a plot that keeps you guessing and turning the page to find out what will happen next. Even though some of the scenerios are a little far-fetched, keep in mind that is what reading a book is all about.

If the money that passes through the hands of African Americans was ever centralized, it would equal the gross national product of the ninth largest country on earth. Despite this collective wealth, few blacks take advantage of this country's stock market--a trend financial journalist Carolyn Brown would like to reverse. The Millionaires' Club, written under the auspices of Black Enterprise magazine, is a concise guide outlining the basics of acquiring money through establishment of an investment club. It works like this:
Groups of people pool their money to invest. The club requires members to plunk down a set amount of money each month, which it then uses to buy shares in securities--mostly stocks. Profits and dividends are plowed back into the portfolio until the club reaches its financial goal. The appeal is simple: As a group, people with small amounts of money can consolidate their financial resources to make larger purchases of company shares.
Brown details everything you need to know to start a club, including recruiting members, regulating the group, and how to become profitable. She advises clubs to invest in growth companies, to diversify investments, reinvest earnings and dividends, and to focus on long-term investments. Brown also advocates the use of the Internet, investing in real estate, and the building of youth investment clubs. All told, Carolyn Brown's wealth-building wisdom is sound and realistic: "The good news about belonging to an investment club is that not only are you helping to enhance the group's cash reserves, but you are learning personal wealth building for the enrichment of your family, children, and the next generation." A good investment, indeed. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Let's face it. Personal finance is a drag. So many books, so much advice, and so much confusion. That is until you read the Millionaire's Club. Surprisingly, the author Brown does an excellent job. I say surprisingly because most personal finance writers seem to be just as dense as the very books that they keep churning out to the general public. Brown's book, however is short, clear and helpful. She's a straight shooter that believes in serving up no fuss and no muss personal finance. Millionaire's Club has got to be one of the best how-to investment club books currently on the market. I should know. I started an investment club three weeks after reading the book.

Book Description

The grandson of slaves, born into poverty in 1892 in the Deep South, A. G. Gaston died more than a century later with a fortune worth well over $130 million and a business empire spanning communications, real estate, and insurance. Gaston was, by any measure, a heroic figure whose wealth and influence bore comparison to J. P. Morgan and Andrew Carnegie. Here, for the first time, is the story of the life of this extraordinary pioneer, told by his niece and grandniece, the award-winning television journalist Carol Jenkins and her daughter Elizabeth Gardner Hines.

Born at a time when the bitter legacy of slavery and Reconstruction still poisoned the lives of black Americans, Gaston was determined to make a difference for himself and his people. His first job, after serving in the celebrated all-black regiment during World War I, bound him to the near-slavery of an Alabama coal mine—but even here Gaston saw not only hope but opportunity. He launched a business selling lunches to fellow miners, soon established a rudimentary bank—and from then on there was no stopping him. A kind of black Horatio Alger, Gaston let a single, powerful question be his guide: What do our people need now? His success flowed from an uncanny genius for knowing the answer.

Combining rich family lore with a deep knowledge of American social and economic history, Carol Jenkins and Elizabeth Hines unfold Gaston’s success story against the backdrop of a century of crushing racial hatred and bigotry. Gaston not only survived the hardships of being black during the Depression, he flourished, and by the 1950s he was ruling a Birmingham-based business empire. When the movement for civil rights swept through the South in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Gaston provided critical financial support to many activists.

At the time of his death in 1996, A. G. Gaston was one of the wealthiest black men in America, if not the wealthiest. But his legacy extended far beyond the monetary. He was a man who had proved it was possible to overcome staggering odds and make a place for himself as a leader, a captain of industry, and a far-sighted philanthropist. Writing with grace and power, Jenkins and Hines bring their distinguished ancestor fully to life in the pages of this book. Black Titan is the story of a man who created his own future—and in the process, blazed a future for all black businesspeople in America.

Actually most of the information from this book was taken from Green Power ( written by the man himself) and the rest was stretched. Actually, I know the authors. Neither of them truly new him and as far being related, they were nieces only by marriage. I just think they are trying to make a quick buck on something that they know nothing about.

4 out of 5 stars Winner of A.G Gaston Spelling Bee.......2007-06-02

As a child I participated in and won the A.G. Gaston spelling bee on the state level two years in a row (1957-1958). It was a stepping stone for me and enabled me to go on and do more rewarding things as an adult. I remember staying in his motel in Birmingham with my sponsor and god mother, Mrs Tempie Horton. This is a piece of history that I share with my grand kids. My name is (maiden) Lois Jean Scott and I attended Calvary Jr. high school in Huntsville, Alabama. I am grateful for Mr Gaston and his wife, whom I met on several occasions, for giving me this opportunity.

Excellent, well-written rag to riches story! As a student, I aspired to win the spelling bee which he paid money to the state winner in Alabama.

5 out of 5 stars Very Insightful Story.......2006-09-07

I took me a little longer than normal for this read but it was a very good narrative of a great american entrepreneur, regardless of his background. Although I am familiar with the accounts of the civil rights movements, the authors did a very good job of painting a picture to the reader of how those events were intertwined with Arthur G. Gaston's life. I appreciated the honesty in detailing his relationships with those close and even more interestingly, Martin Luther King, Jr. Very good book. Icon in our American capitalistic system.

5 out of 5 stars Gaston is Rockefeller with both hands tied behind his back--Simply Amazing!.......2006-07-27

Carol Jenkins and Elizabeth Gardner Hines do an excellent job of documenting the life and times of one America's greatest, if largely unsung (at least outside of the black community), business heroes. Gaston built a great business empire in the Deep South of Birmingham in the Jim Crow, pre-Civil Rights, pre-Affirmative Action era. Imagine the wealth he could have achieved had his brilliance and work ethic not been shackled by racism and discrimination? And despite being lambasted as an apologist and Uncle Tom by many during the battle for civil rights, what would the fate of Dr. Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement have been were it not for the financial resources, advice and intervention of Gaston? Black Titan is a great example of defining a man, the times he lived through and the broad impact left in his wake. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Gaston several times during the last decade of his life. For those who didn't get that chance, Black Titan is the next best thing to meeting him in person. The book should be required reading not just for black America, but for all Americans. Also, this book is yet another reason why Carol Jenkins is deservedly idolized by an entire generation of black journalists--she is a titan of her profession, and a worthy heir of Gaston's legacy.

Ever since Good Peoples, his bestselling debut novel, Marcus Major has proven himself a master of lively, fast-moving, sensual stories about modern relationships. In A Man Most Worthy, he gives us the irresistible tale of a man who has everything-except the one woman he can't forget.

At thirty-six, self-made millionaire John Sebastian has achieved the kind of success that most men only dream of. His up-from-the-ground security systems business is booming, his home is a palace, and his gorgeous young girlfriend worships the ground he walks on. But seven years ago, John did something he has regretted ever since: He allowed the woman he loved to walk out of his life. Now, four years away from the big four-oh, he has come up with a plan for the rest of his life. He's going to win back Josephine Flowers, no matter what it takes-even moving back to his New Jersey hometown and overcoming the fact that she is now married to another. But his greatest challenge still lies ahead: to prove himself deserving of this special woman's love.

A story about reconnecting with the past and risking everything you have-most of all your heart-A Man Most Worthy is another sexy, witty, and wise offering from one of today's most gifted talents-an author most worthy of the kind of success this wonderful new novel is certain to bring.

        1 out of 5 stars Didn't like it........2006-05-15

I'm sorry but I really hated this book. I didn't care for any of the characters; I didn't care for the plot. I don't understand how Josephine could consider John, a man most worthy, when he made her do something that she really didn't want too. I thought John was a very selfish, arrogant character, and Josephine crazy for wanting him back. I just didn't like this one at all.

5 out of 5 stars Wanna Read A Good Book?.......2005-02-26

This one is for you! Kudos to Marcus Major for this one. I'm usually not a fan of his work, and got this book from a friend. I'm glad I did.

John promised that he would never have to struggle again after growing up in the slums of Newark, New Jersey. He's successful and has everything material with a hottie named Scent.

The problem is John is still in love with Josephine Prescott, and wishes he never let her go. Josephine is unhappily married to a man named Darrien. John always wondered where Josephine was and how her life turned out, and persus her by all means necessary. Luckily for Josephine, John is used to getting what he wants, and doesn't stop until Josephine is his.

I recommend this book as a must read! The love scenes, NOT sex scenes, but love scenes are fantastic, it's unpredictable, and has so many twists, turns, and surprises.

        4 out of 5 stars first - time read.......2004-12-20

Good book. Easy to relate to characters and develop quick like and dislike of them. Not one dimensional - great character flaws.

5 out of 5 stars A book most worthy of your precious reading time.......2004-09-29

After reading his short story in I knew I would want to read his other books. He has this way of interweaving humor in his stories. Man Most Worthy is the first full length book I've read by Mr. Major's and I was not disappointed.

John Sebastian vowed to make sure he would never have to struggle after growing up in poverty in Newark, New Jersey. He is a successful business man and even though he has everything he could want materially, and he has a beautiful younger girlfriend named Scent, he realizes he is missing something. What he is missing is the one woman he really loved, but let go many years ago. That woman would be Josephine Flowers Prescott. Josephine is a Vice Principal of a school and married to Darrien Prescott. Darrien is the superintendent of a rich school district, and he is very concerned with image. So concerned he is always thinking about what his peers will think about Josephine working in such a poor school district. He feels that Josephine should get a job in his district. He is also always bothering Josephine about her being slightly overweight. Josephine is eager to have a baby, but her husband keeps putting if off. When John finds out how quickly Josephine moved on after their break up he wonders if she is truly happy, and seeks to find out. John Sebastian is used to getting what he wants, and he will not take no for an answer in his pursuit of Josephine. He wants to correct the wrongs of the past, and earn Josephine's trust, friendship and most importantly her love.

This book is a must read. The love scenes in this book are super hot, and he has some really positive male role models in this book. Mr. Duke is one of those positive male role models. This book I felt was not predictable, and there are some great pot twists in this book that will really surprise you. First question you will have is "Well she is married, so how on earth will John get this woman back? She has moved on, there is no way she will look back. Or will she?" Read the book to find out!!! You will not be disappointed.

        5 out of 5 stars Most Enjoyable.......2004-08-27

This was an interesting and most enjoyable read. I am relatively new to this author I thoroughly enjoyed it. His characters are so well developed and they come to life on each page. Jules, Gloria, John, Josephine, & Mr. Duke all remind me of special people in my life. Keep up the good work I look forward to reading more of your work.
