Book Description

One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

4 out of 5 stars Profound historical fiction...........2007-10-18

Been on a bit of a western reading Jag lately after reading Dances with Wolves and Across the High Lonesome(both are excelletn by the way) when I stumbled across this book. I ended up reading this book over the course of one weekend. I found Fergus' research on the Plains Indians and how he wove it into a fictional story fascinating. He does lean on stereotypes in places but the fictional premise of this novel drew me in and would not let go! Perhaps not a classic, but a very worthy historical fiction.

3 out of 5 stars Wild story from the wild west.......2007-10-08

May Dodd is the daughter of a wealthy family in Chicago who humiliates them by running off with her lover and having two children by him without marrying. Her family has her committed to an asylum as her indiscretion could only be caused by insanity. But she is ultimately given an opportunity to gain her freedom from the asylum - she must relocate west and become the bride of a Cheyenne Indian.

Little Wolf is the Cheyenne Chief who proposes to President Grant that the two nations trade 1000 white women for 1000 horses. It is Little Wolf's belief that by having children with the white brides that the offspring will bring the Cheyenne closer to the white world and thus begin the process of assimilation. The US Government takes the Indian Nation up on its offer in secret sending only those women who volunteer or want the freedom to escape their current lives, such as women in asylums and jails. May Dodd jumps on this opportunity and becomes a leader amongst the other women who believe the west has something to offer.

This novel is comprised of the journal entries of May Dodd and letters that she writes to loved ones back home understanding that they will never be mailed. Her writing chronicles the daily life of the Cheyenne from the elaborate wedding ceremony the white women experience, to the everyday chores and friendships that are born on the vast prairies. It is a unique look at how the Native American life may have been in the late 1800s, but also provides a sharp contrast between that life and that of the whites. The story is not without conflict and does a good job of presenting the perspective of the Native American as the white man trampled over their lands and customs.

Something about this book just didn't grab me and hold on. It was interesting and informative, but I had trouble buying into the May Dodd character. She was a bit too strong willed to be plausible. While others around her experienced terrifying fear, she almost brushes her own experience with fear and danger aside too callously. Not to say that she didn't acknowledge the people and circumstances that scared her, but it was minimized in such a way that it became hard to read her as a believable character. The story is moving, but was missing something that is hard to put a finger on.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing read.......2007-10-06

I loved this book! At the very beginning I was a bit skeptical but once I got into it I couldn't stop listening. I read some other reviews that mentioned finding men writing in a woman's voice not believable but I disagree. An author is a story teller and can tell a story from many perspectives, you need to use your imagination... it's fiction! After only a little way into the book I was immersed in the time, place and beauty of the setting. I loved the characters, a lot of variety and different peronalities. The Native American way of life was quite interesting and although this book was written in a plain spoken way it really came alive for me. I would highly suggest this book to anyone. It's an easy read and I think a "page turner."

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-10-03

I loved this book and am so sad that it ended. I hope his other books are as good as this one because I really liked his writing style. I read all the time and this is the best book I have read in a long time. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. I would highly reccomend it!

5 out of 5 stars Great read with unexpected story line.......2007-10-03

I asked some friends what was the best thing they'd read lately. When they mentioned the title of this book I could not imagine what it was about and visualized something like the Million Man March...in reverse? :-)
Even when they told me a bit of the plot line I wasn't sure about "One Thousand White Women". But they said they couldn't put it down so I gave it a try. I loved it - so much so that I bought it as a gift for someone else. The book intertwines a bit of a real story with 'what might have been'. I found myself so engrossed in the book that I forgot it was fiction...and wished it wasn't.

4 out of 5 stars Loved the action, loved the romance, loved the storyline! Great start to a new series!.......2007-07-13

I love the author and her "Magic" series. I normally read the paranormal romances and was nervous picking up this book. Honestly I didn't buy this book at first, after seeing that the male character was named Dare I was worried. I was like his name is, Dare? But I'am so glad that I bought this book. This book was fast paced and sexy. The story line was great! It had me turning the pages so fast I finished the book in a day. Crazy huh!

I felt for Lyra and her mom. The cult in this book is scarey and believable. Lyra being a 23 year old virgin was even believable, oddly enough. Dare was such a hunk and what a sweetie!! I thought this was a great read!!!

5 out of 5 stars Chosen Prey .......2007-07-12

After Lyra Collin's father was killed when she was thirteen in a police bust gone bad, her mother was talked into joining a cult called The Temple of Light by its Prophet, Neil Barker. For three years Lyra lived in fear of the day she turned eighteen and would be forced to become one of Neil's wives. Lyra escaped before she could be forced into a farce of a marriage and has been on the run now for five years from the cult.

Being a private investigator has been the main focus of Dare Lancaster's life since he left the police force after the death of his partner. Taking the job of finding Lyra Collins ended up being a lot more than he expected. Protecting Lyra from the Temple of Light was now his responsibility since they found her because of him. There was another danger to him, though. He could very well lose his life along with his heart to this strong, yet fragile woman.

Cheyenne McCray is one of my favorite authors. One of the reasons why is that she spins a tale so vividly that I always feel as if I'm right there, living the story along with the characters. Chosen Prey lured me in so deeply that I could feel the pain that Lyra experiences. I did like both Lyra and Dare, loved Nick and loved to hate Neil, Mark and Adam. Both the story and the characterization are rich in detail and emotion. The only problem that I had with Chosen Prey was that during the five years that Lyra was on the run, she never truly learned how to defend herself against being taken, though I do have to say she did learn how to disappear and hide extremely well.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-06-13

This is a hot sensual romantic suspense and it stands up to all those words. I enjoyed the book and will eagerly look forward to more of this type by Ms. McCray.

Lyra Collins escaped from a cult when she was 18 and has been hiding ever since. She is a talented artist and has survived the last five yrs by selling her art. Life has not been easy but just when she at last thinks she is safe Dare Lancaster finds her.

Dare Lancaster is a Private Investigator hired by a member of the cult to find the artist who is producing a certain type of art. Dare has been a police officer before he turned rancher and sometime PI. He and his partner run a security agency.

Unknown to him he is followed to Lyra's house and she meets him with pepper spray and a firmly slammed door. When he is leaving he sees several men with peculiar hair and clothes who pull up to her door. They rush out surrounding the house and Dare realizes something is definitely not right. Wiping pepper spray out of his eyes he jumps into the fray and manages to rescue Lyra, quickly taking her to a safe place.

When time allows Lyra tells him about the cult and it's leader Neal Barker who has made a prophecy that Lyra will bare the new Messiah. She is to become his No. 1 wife and concieve the next leader of the cult.

The romance is hot, the action is non-stop and the story is fasinating. I loved it. If you like alot of heat in your romances this one is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad--Good Suspence and Worthy Characters.......2007-06-03

Lyra Collins has been on the run since she was a teenager. Having found what she thought was a safe haven in Bisbee, Arizona, she lets her guard down one too many times. The relentless people of the Temple of Light have found her and its time to run again. An unwilling participant in a sordid prophecy, Lyra refuses to bow to the cult prophet's delusional desires. The cult members bring determined to all an all-new, dangerous level though and they will do anything to recapture her.

Former cop turned private investigator Dare Lancaster never meant for the alluring young woman to come to harm. When he leads to bad guys straight to her door though, he vows to set his mistakes to rights. The fact that he can't resist her sweet body and devilish charm sweetens the desire to help her as well. He's better at protecting than he is at detecting in this instance and he sets out to take down the cult that wants to harm Lyra. Using his previous skills as a cop, he forms a rigid defense around the unconventional little beauty and an even hotter, sensual one around her heart. When the cult comes calling again though, he'll have to pull out all the stops in order to keep the cult's leader from seeing his evil plans through.

Chosen Prey is rife with bold, desperate sensuality, fueled by the precarious situation Lyra and Dare find themselves in. Though neither has met before, each knows there is something primal between them. McCray writes their story with a passion fueled suspense that starts with action and ends with even more heart tripping action by the end. It's a fast paced read that is suspenseful and hits the mark wonderfully with regards to Lyra's characterization. My one regret is that Dare is not as equally fleshed out, but what we do get of him is hot and certainly left me admiring his bold pursuit of Lyra as well as his determination to see her rid of the Temple's shadow. The details of their environments, from Bisbee to the stark conditions of the Temple's compound, are wonderful enough to give the reader a clear impression from beginning to end. As an intro for me to what MCCray can do with romantic suspense, I came away pretty pleased and look forward to reading more such romance from her.

Cheyenne has done it again with a pulse pounding, heart stoping new series. It gets you hooked from the first 10 pages and keeps you reading. I got so into it that I felt what they characters felt. A great romantic suspense.

Book Description

Copper Ashcroft is an accomplished D’Anu witch, but the magic she wields is a potent force—strong enough to hurl her into a mysterious Otherworld when a spell backfires. Before Copper can escape, another being is pulled into her realm—Tiernan, a powerfully virile Tuatha D’Danann warrior. Blond, blue-eyed, and shamelessly seductive, Tiernan could be Copper’s savior…and his touch sets her body on fire.

Like others of his kind, Tiernan stands alongside the D’Anu witches to battle the demons of the Underworld. Obligation to his cause and his people cautions against any entanglement with Copper, yet each second spent with this beautiful, uninhibited woman stirs an insatiable hunger. Desire explodes into carnal bliss, but the visions that haunt Copper’s dreams are growing stronger, and they foretell a terrifying evil waiting to be unleashed…

Saving the city will take more than brute strength…more than witchcraft. Only together can Copper and Tiernan find a way to overcome the dark forces—and seize a passion that has bewitched them both.

3 out of 5 stars When does lust equal love?.......2007-04-17

I have read MANY Romance and Adventure Novels in my time ... and never have I read one with som much F-ing in it. Not making love, not sex, but just straight F-ing. There is no tenderness in this book that I could find ... so I had a very hard time connecting with and seeing how the main Characters, Copper & Tiernan, could have possibly fell in love? If you like to read Porn, this book is great ... if you are looking for romace, love and all that implies ... skip it. As for creating another world ... the authors imagination is passible, I was able to "see" the "worlds", I just wished that not all of the "romanticly" linked characters were so VULGAR and base! It is one thing to lust for someone, but when there are feelings involved ... I am sorry, it is not always lustful, angry and hard ... definately more porn than anything else.

3 out of 5 stars Eh, ok..........2007-04-08

I just finished this book and it took me longer than usual to read through it b/c I didn't feel it was good as her first one. To me, the characters seemed fake. It was hard for me to feel connected to them and it wasn't very believable. There were a few parts where I felt wrapped up in it but they didn't seem to last very long...

5 out of 5 stars I was hooked!.......2007-03-22

I thought this book was hard to put down. I read the whole thing in two days. It may have had some 'cheesy' moments, but I really like books that come together in the end and hey, the 'love' scenes were um.. quite vivid.

Fun book to read.

Awesome read. This is the second part of the witch's books written by Cheyenne McCray. The first was Silver and Hawk's book. This book has the heroinne Copper and her gorgeous man Tiernan. You will really enjoy all the intrigue of this book. I cannot wait until the next book comes out.

4 out of 5 stars Not McCray's Best-3 1/2 Stars, Really.......2007-01-27

Copper Ashcroft is a witch whose use of grey magic got her kicked out of her former coven, along with her sister, Silver. Now Copper's persistence in using grey magic has landed her-accidentally-in Otherworld, where she tries new spells as often as possible in order to get free, and back home to her sister and the new coven they have formed.

Tiernan is a Tuath D'Danann warrior who is drawn to the picture of Copper her sister has every time he sees it. But he's betrothed to someone, an alliance which will strengthen both families, and Copper has disappeared anyway. When a visit back home uncovers his fiance's affair with another man, he puts off the wedding until he can find a suitable way to end the betrothal, and returns to San Francisco to help expel the Fomorii demons which threaten both the worlds of the Fae and humans.

He is surprised to find himself sucked into the same Otherworld where Copper is trapped, by yet another of her spells gone awry-but he loses no time in seducing Copper, a mutually enjoyable experience. Until Copper finds out he has a fiancé. . .

I very much like what I've read of Cheyenne McCray's work in the past. This book, however, was one I failed to enjoy as much as I have her past works. There was plenty of action, and lots of interesting supernatural elements, but the main characters seemed too lacking in depth, their interactions too rushed, for me to be able to enjoy or believe in their relationship as anything but purely sexual, and it didn't seem as if they respected each other even within that framework.

It wasn't so much Tiernan, since he had good reason not to be faithful to his fiancé, but Copper came across as a bit of a bumbling airhead with a vocabulary lacking the words `moral compass'-even though she got mad at Tiernan for having sex with her, once she found out he was engaged. Shouldn't that be a question a smart person asks BEFORE the horizontal bump & grind? I dunno. *G*

There were aspects of the character that were fun to read-her stubborn use of grey magic had me thinking at first we were going to get a far more fully rounded and determined gal-but once she found out about Tiernan's pseudo-fiancé, she just kind of sank into behavior that was ill-suited to a woman confident enough to veer from the well-traveled paths her art decrees to explore new vistas. This book was by no means horrible: it simply wasn't up to the standard this author is capable of.

With good authors, there's always the bar they set themselves with their former work, and McCray's has always been quite good-and no doubt will continue to be in the future. For many authors, this would be an excellent effort. As measured against McCray's own well-demonstrated talents, it can only be described as a bit below her usual high standard.

very good book, introduces different mythology and alternate races well.

i would recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Story, extremely sexy and full of plot twist.......2007-01-08

WOW!!.....This book is HOT with a capital H. I loved this book. Extremely exciting, interesting and captivating. Not for the faint of Heart. The Author is not afraid to go there! The Heroinne Silver was strong and a real bad-A Chick that retains her femininity. The Hero-Hawk was gorgeous, dark, strong and sensitive. I like that in a man. The sister's book is out now also. (Copper and Tiernan-Seduced by Magic). The bad guys (??) are truly BAD. They commit horrendous crimes and deserve everything they get and more. Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars barely adequate..........2007-01-03

The willing suspension of disbelief eluded me completely with this book.
This seems to be an exercise in something (but what?)and it's not working.

1 out of 5 stars Trashy romance masquerading as fantasy.......2006-11-30

This book was clearly written to capitalize on the Romantic Fantasy/Horror genre. It was clear the author hadn't even bothered to read anything from the genre.

The book reads like it was written from a formula derived from a Cliff notes versions of Hamilton, Harris, Dresden, ...

I couldn't even finish the book it was that bad.

1 out of 5 stars It's sad...........2006-11-26

I work in a book store and tell people not to buy this book. I warn them. It was the first romance I ever did let alone paranormal, which I am notseasoned in no thanks to Ms. McCray. I wanted to go to her signing cause she lives here in the area near me in Arizona. Glad I didn't cause I would have to tell her. Please stop. Crude probably...but as a future writer...and a seasoned reader, it's an example of what not to do...I also don't recommend Elloras cave. Yes erotic romance but crappy erotic romance. These writers are horrific at times. Some of us have read alot in these genres and these are books we do not reccomend at all. How they got publishe dis the age old question...guess some people don't care about the story, or the thought put into a good read just the momentary fulllfilment of sex every other page...

Book Description

On the morning of June 25, 1876,  soldiers of the elite U.S. Seventh Cavalry led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer attacked a large Indian encampment on the banks of the Little Bighorn River. By day's end, Custer and more than two hundred of his men lay dead. It was a shocking defeat--or magnificent victory, depending on your point of view--and more than a century later it is still the object of controversy, debate, and fascination.

What really happened on that fateful day? Now, thanks to the work of Herman J. Viola, Curator Emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution, we are much closer to answering that question. Dr. Viola, a leader in the preservation of Native American culture and history, has collected here dozens of dramatic, never-before-published accounts by Indians who participated in the battle--accounts that have been handed down to the present day, often secretly and accompanied by oaths of silence, from one generation to the next. These remarkable eyewitness recollections provide a direct link to that day's events; together they constitute an unprecedented oral history of the battle from the Native American point of view and the most comprehensive eyewitness description of Little Bighorn we have ever had.

Here are the dramatic stories of the Cheyenne and Lakota warriors who rode into battle against Custer, the yellow-haired Son of the Morning Star, an adversary whose valor they admired--but who became a mortal enemy after breaking his peace-pipe oath, a scene described vividly in these pages. Here in their own words are the stories of the Crow scouts, allies of Custer, who advised against attacking Sitting Bull's village on the Little Bighorn. Here are tales of valor told by the Arikara scouts who fought side by side with Custer's men against the Lakota and Cheyenne; although the Great Father in Washington rewarded their heroism with silence, it is celebrated to this day in tribal stories and songs that come to us from beyond the grave with hair-raising immediacy and power.

Lavishly illustrated with more than two hundred maps, photographs, reproductions, and drawings, this remarkable book also includes:

An account of the battle, including startling descriptions of Custer's conduct, collected from the Crow scouts by the famed photographer Edward S. Curtis in 1908. Curtis never published this report--President Theodore Roosevelt advised him not to--and it remained a secret until his ninety-year-old son recently gave the material to the Smithsonian.

New archaeological evidence from the battlefield that casts fresh light on the Seventh Cavalry's movements, along with discoveries from the site of Sitting Bull's village--including the complete skeleton of a cavalry horse with its rider's well-
preserved saddlebags and personal items.

A series of illustrations made soon after the battle by Red Horse, a remarkable tableau that is reproduced here in its entirety for the first time.

Three letters written by Lieutenant William Van Wyck Reily just days before he died at Little Bighorn that provide key and potentially controversial insights into the conduct of the cavalry under Custer's command.

In short, this landmark book takes us much closer to knowing what really happened on that June day in 1876 when Custer died and a legend was born.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but. . ........2007-01-18

I wished I had known (should have read the reviews!) that this is a coffee table attempt to deal with an extremely complicated subject. The pretty pictures and artwork were fine, but the book claims to have important historical information from the Crow scouts. When I read (reread and reread) the accounts, I was no closer to understanding what happened. Indeed, one descendant of the Crow scouts admitted that the versions of the events told to him by the scouts were not the same.

The book's strength is in its modern work at the site. The articles about what items were found at both sites with metal detectors (a whole horse!) was fascinating and worth the purchase price. For instance, that bullets with the same rifling were found all over the Custer battle site is fascinating. I hope more metal detector search can be done.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've ever read!!.......2004-05-01

This book is so ground-breaking and thorough and clever that I'll read it again as soon as I get time. The narratives and recollections of native Americans combined with the most up-to-date scholarship make this book a small masterpiece. Our view of the battle was so slanted and biased, generally without intention, because of an overemphasis on the records of European participants, etc. This book gives another view, and thus B-A-L-A-N-C-E.!!

5 out of 5 stars A major work........2001-05-28

In general I'm not really big on modern history (my notion of "modern" being everything after 1200 BC!), but Viola's book "Little Bighorn Remembered," featured as it was as the "untold Indian story of Custer's last stand," intrigued me. I have to admit to having had to take a second run at it before I really got into the subject. It isn't that the work is poorly written; it isn't. I think that the up front and in your face brutality of the 19th Century US government in dealing with the Native American population was just hard to deal with for me. It`s not that I am myself Native American; I just have a strong sense of fairness and fairness had no part in it. When I finally did settle into the material, however, it read rapidly. In fact it probably classifies highly with some of those I-couldn't-put-it-down novels over which people burn the midnight oil. (In my case I should have been getting a quick nap between patients while I was on-call for the OR on a night shift).

The first two chapters of the book concern the antecedents leading up to the Indian confrontation with Custer and the 7th Cavalry. These included Custer's own pre-dawn attack on a sleeping Cheyenne village under the leadership of Chief Black Kettle on the Washita River in 1868 and an earlier similar attack on Plains Tribes camping at Sand Creek in 1864. In both instances dozens of men, women, and children were hunted down and shot and their bodies butchered. In the 1868 attack even the Cheyenne pony herd, some 900 animals, was also killed, severely crippling the people's ability to pursue their traditional lifestyle. The narrative of these two chapters is filled with unfulfilled promises and broken treaties with Native Americans in the furtherance of US territorial expansion during the 19th Century. Certainly anyone familiar with the attitudes of Europeans toward technologically less advanced populations world wide in areas they wished to exploit will recognize the pattern.

The remainder of the book is divided into chapters each dealing with various perspectives on the battle of the Little Bighorn. Here is where the book rises above others on the subject, for Viola makes use of very diverse sources in his effort to thoroughly and fairly cover the subject .

Included are the oral histories passed on by the Indian participants, stories from the Cheyenne and the Dakota on one side and from the Crow and Arikara scouts with Custer on the other. Probably the most interesting part of this material is the fact that not all Plains Indians felt the same about the coming of the army into the area. In fact the imperialism of the US government was actually superimposed upon on-going events among traditional enemies within the community of local people. The long standing enmity of certain groups actually facilitated the ultimate defeat of the Plains Indians. Even allies weren't necessarily of one mind and still are not. A popular saying among the modern Cheyenne is that "The Sioux got the glory, the Crows got the land, but the Cheyennes did the fighting(p. 27)."

Also among the narratives are notes left by Edward S. Curtis who undertook the mission of creating a photographic preservation of Native American Indian lifestyles before they disappeared. During the pursuit of this work Curtis took the opportunity of covering the battle site in the company of three of Custer's Crow scouts. From information about events provided by these individuals he came to the conclusion that the battle had not proceeded as recorded thirty years previously. His intent to publish his conclusions in his project was discouraged by President Theodore Roosevelt, primarily because the latter was concerned that pro-Custer factions would ruin Curtis. The information was preserved and given over to the National Museum of American History by his son Harold just prior to Harold's death at the age of 95 in 1988.

Among the "documents" preserving the Battle at Little Bighorn are the Indian drawings of the event of which Viola includes illustrations of many. Though simple line drawings they give every bit as clear an image of the violence and carnage of the battle field as do the photo images of the Civil War. Included are drawings by the Dakota, Red Horse, and some etched drawings by an unknown artists on flattened metal from trade kettles. Also presented, many for the first time, are some of the victory memorabilia collected from the battlefield and preserved by family members of the Indian participants through the generations.

A fire across the battlefield in 1983 made an archaeological examination of the site possible and almost imperative. Application of modern techniques to the charting, recovery and analysis of the material remains on the site by professionals and trained volunteers in the decade between 1985 and 1995 have allowed a reinterpretation of what occurred and an external verification of the stories of various participants. (For a more in-depth account of which see my review of "They Died With Custer : Soldiers' Bones from the Battle of the Little Bighorn.")

Among the most amazing reports of the battle and its events is that of the contribution of suicide to the death toll. Apparently the notion of torture at the hands of Indian combatants, fostered in part by the tradition of post mortem mutilation of enemy bodies (to prevent their full enjoyment of the afterlife) produced a "save the last bullet for yourself" mentality that led to a far higher mortality than might have occurred. One Indian witness reported having seen a man "murder" a compatriot and than shoot himself. Apparently he was not the only individual to have seen this puzzling behavior either.

Probably the most arresting facets of Viola's book, and certainly the ones I found most enjoyable, were the many rotogravure/tintype portraits of the various American Indian personalities involved in the drama of the Plains. The faces are filled with dignity, composure, and intelligence. It leaves the viewer with a sense of compassion and loss. One wonders what the country might have been like had the two worlds learned to coexist more peacefully and to learn from one another.

4 out of 5 stars Crow accounts are valuable.......2000-03-04

I found this book to be fascinating pictorially and in its presentation of Indian viewpoints of Little Bighorn.

Some other reviewers have criticized Herman Viola's inclusion of the accounts of Custer's Crow scouts, as if Viola is somehow doing a disservice to scholarship. However, I don't think he is necessarily presenting these accounts as gospel. Viola acknowledges the inconsistencies between witnesses' stories, but he gives the Crow a chance to speak for themselves, which seems like a good thing to me.

Perhaps by publishing these little-known testimonies, Viola will encourage other Indian sources to share their knowledge of Little Bighorn while that knowledge still exists.

3 out of 5 stars A Pretty book but flawed.......2000-02-19

Read without knowledge of the other Indian based accounts available; this is an interesting book. There are other books available also which are based on Indian accounts and seem more coherent. This book is pretty and interesting but adds very little to a serious student of the event. Some of the vignettes are interesting when compared with other indian accounts and blended with them. The story of Custer sitting around at Weir point while Reno's battalion was being routed is not well placed in time or detail. In short, the book is a quick and easy read. It is an interesting contrast to the "old" accounts of the Little Big Horn saga. In light of other recent works on the subject; it is a lightweight.

4 out of 5 stars Kinky in Wonderland.......2007-10-18

This is the 2nd book to the Wonderland series. This story is hot.Im glad that the King of Spades came out as the second story.

4 out of 5 stars A little of a let down.......2007-09-20

I had high expectations for Spades following the King of Hearts and was kinda disappointed. It was a good book and actually had a lot more humor in it than the last, but I just couldn't get into the characters so much.

4 out of 5 stars The King of Spades.......2007-05-15

This is a great read. The characters are so dominate and down to earth that you often find yourself thinking i know someone like that or i've thought that a time or two myself. King Darronn and Alexi are so Alpha in their genders that it sometimes becomes comical when they start to question themselves. I don't want to spoil the good parts (some are BETTER than others) but this is a real STEAMY read, with a great host of other HOT characters, whose stories you wouldn't want to miss. I highly recommend reading the entire series.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderland: King of Spades (Wonderland) by Cheyenne McCray.......2007-03-19

I was really happy with this order.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the first.......2006-04-12

This book was better developed than the first. I felt like I got to know the characters better, and believe in their relationship a bit more. I also like the playful/playacting Domination/submission play better than the too serious, too intense version in the first book. Alexi was a stronger character, one that I felt I could like and get to know.

4 out of 5 stars Easy read.......2007-09-20

I thought this one would be a bit more hard core, but I love the fact that her characters don't degrade each other and that it's more about pleasure than humiliation or pain. I couldn't put it down

3 out of 5 stars Quick, Steamy, Thin on Plot.......2007-09-17

This book is purportedly a paranormal romance, but it's really just thinly veiled porn. Don't get me wrong, I like a steamy read as much as anyone, but I do like the sex to make sense in the story, rather than sex be what the story is about.

This book had some interesting settings, a studly hero, a likeable heroine, and was very erotic with some light kink. But if you are looking for a real romance story, look elsewhere. On the other hand, next time you're feeling.... you know, a little..... *anxious*... give this one a try.

5 out of 5 stars Menage.......2007-08-19

I luv stories about menage's & this one is hot. It's nice to read about women who are not model thin like a lot of us.

5 out of 5 stars *GREAT FANTASY*.......2006-07-22

This is a great fantasy story. Lots of sex! Bit of intrigue. But light and a quick read. I ordered all of the others after I finished this book!

3 out of 5 stars Well written, but you have to..........2006-04-12

...understand/like/be intrigued by lifestyle BDSM. This isn't a nice fantasy with a little domination, a little spanking. What the heroine and the hero want is a Master/slave relationship in a complete lifestyle manner, and that means his absolute control of all aspects of her life, including eye contact, clothing, food, where she goes, what she does, everything. They aren't playing at anything, this is complete Domination and submission, and it is intense and emotional, even a bit draining. It is a lot harder core, not pornographically speaking, but in terms of the depth of Alice's submission, than I expected to find. The author obviously did her homework, and understands a bit about the psychology of relationships like this, so it is tastefully handled. It isn't my cup of tea, really, and I don't find it erotic, but many people do.

That said, I do feel that the author developed the world and the unusual (for a romance) relationship, but didn't spend quite enough time on the characters. The King of Hearts remained distant and unreachable, and I didn't get the feeling that he really loved Alice. While there was a deep emotional connection, related to the trust of a sucessful Dom/sub relationship, I didn't sense love or actual passion for each other, just for the roles that both had always wanted filled in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars The best yet..........2005-09-24

If you have followed the series, I think you will agree this is the best one yet. I don't think reviews should be a synopsis, of what is happening inside the cover of the book.So suffice it to say without giving anything away, great characters, the sex was as hot as Ms. McCray has ever written. Great story,

5 out of 5 stars Hot and Steamy.......2005-09-04

This was great book. Annie who had never been in love and was still a virgin living a simple life. The King of Diamonds who brought Annie there to be his Queen. Not to love her but teach her to please him. They both have trust issues. Then when Annie was in danger he realized that he could love her but is it to late? Were they a perfect match for each other? The love scenes and hot and heavy. It's just makes you want the two of them to fall in love. This you must read.

4 out of 5 stars not as good as the other 2.......2005-08-29

i read the hearts and spade portions of this group of books and found the diamonds segment a little too "cookie cutter". i did not get a "feel" for the characters and after a while, i did not care. i don't think i'll waste my money on the clubs edition.

Comments:
McCray did a good job picking up from where she left off in Book 2 of the Wonderland series. Annie, who does painting for a hobby, is feeling sad and blue because it's the anniversary of when her cousins disappeared. First Alice and then Alexi. Annie has a talent with painting and uses it as a place to find peace and solace. Anyways, Annie ends up doing an eerie painting that she has no recollection of doing and eventually finds herself being pulled in by no other than the King of Diamonds. Not to ruin the entire story, Annie is portrayed as having a gentle nature but yet having the courage to stand up to Karn when she feels he is asking too much of her. With her love and touch, Karn soon finds himself fighting not to fall under Annie's spell and opening his heart up to her. Though a bondage book, the sex is still steamy as ever. Annie is the perfect mate for Karn, but will he realize it before it is too late?

4 out of 5 stars Followon the Wildcat and good read.......2005-10-18

Tis is the follow on the wildcat and follows Dean's attempts to put a stop to the rustleing ad to deal with her case of the hots for Jake who dumped her for a carrer as a lawman. The mistery continues in the next book. The sex is welll written and while the plot is weak its Ok and woith giving a better than average rating to the book.

5 out of 5 stars Do you love westerns?.......2004-09-29

I just love westerns and this one didn't disappoint. The love scenes were HOT, HOT, HOT!!! I loved the heroine she wasn't winey or annoying, she was very independent and self-assured. The hero was a nice alpha male and the heroine really made him work to earn her trust again. **sigh** It was a very believable relationship. I was a little surprised at the ending. I don't think I'm giving anything away, there is a cattle-rustling mystery that does not get solved and continues on into the next book. So of course I have to get the next one. I also recommend anything by Sarah McCarty too. She writes great westerns and has great alpha cowboys.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent erotic western romance ..........2004-08-21

Great characters, great love story, and fantastic alpha male. I love everything written by this author and this story was no exception. The next in the series (available as an e-book) was also wonderful. I think Ms. McCray has a way with the westerns--the characters are pleasing and the dialogue seems very genuine. GREAT HOT love scenes and and dark brooding alpha male make this story a keeper for me.

4 out of 5 stars Saddle up, partner! (Corny, I know.).......2004-07-24

This is the first Western romantica I've ever read, and Wildfire is one of the yummiest, sexiest, most erotic romances out there. The thing that I like the most is that it is set in rural Arizona with a backdrop of country life. Dean "Dee" MacLeod has had a great deal of horses and other life stock stolen from her ranch, and no one in town appears to know what's going on. But things get even more complicated in Dee's life when ex-boyfriend Jake Reynolds decides to help out with the case. He'd left her ten years ago and her heart is still broken. Her plan is to make the ultimate seduction that will show him what he's missed out on all these years, but Jake has other ideas in mind...

Cheyenne McCray's descriptions are insatiable beyond compare. I couldn't help but turn the pages until I was done with this gem. I had loved Book 1 of The Seraphine Chronicles, and now McCray has outdone herself with this first installment of the Wild series. The one thing I didn't like is that she left a rather big cliffhanger -- the reader doesn't get to find out who the rustler is. I guess I'll have to read the other books and find out, not that I wasn't going to anyway! I highly recommend this delicious romantica. Ellora's Cave and Ms. McCray have done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Those Cowboys!!!.......2004-03-17

Wildfire is the first in Cheyenne McCray's Wild series. If you love alpha cowboys this is the book for you, be warned though this is an erotic romance so has graphic sex scenes. Dee Macloud is running her ranch by herself, her ranch hands call her the "Ice Queen" which couldn't be further from the truth. Ten years ago Jake Reynolds left Dee in the middle of their hot love affair without a second thought, or so Dee thinks, but Jake has never forgotten Dee and is back in Arizona looking to take up where he left off. This is a very sexy read and you will not be dissapointed. Ms McCray is an author who is on my must buy list simply because i know she will deliver in her books and i know i haven't wasted my time or money.
