Open the mummy-shaped box.... Smell the must of the tomb.... Reveal the secrets within.... Included among these secrets are a 24-page booklet all about real-life mummies and the people who study them, a 10-inch plastic-model body, and four carved heads of gods to protect the Canopic jars where you'll store the plastic organs found inside the body--both lungs in a single jar, please! Find the hidden drawer containing the gauze wrappings, headdress, scarabs, and a cardboard cat you can mummify to accompany your Pharaoh in the afterlife. Wrap your mummy from head to toe, place lucky amulets in the gauze, and bury it in the back yard (soak the gauze in brine first for a more realistic mummy experience). Don't forget to seal the tomb with your "Curse of the Mummy" sticker ... and to warn your parents, so when they rent the expensive tiller to dig up the garden, they don't break the blades on your ultracool mummy.
This kit introduces curious kids to the mummies of many different cultures, such as those of ancient Egypt and South America, and to all the types of mummies, including shrunken heads, bog mummies, and ice mummies. Slightly creepy good fun.

A new "treasure" for my son.......2007-08-09
My five-year-old son and I did this project together (okay, so I did most of the work, but he was engaged in "helping" the whole time, which is saying something). We have completed pretty much every "mummy" kit we can get our hands on, and this one was probably the best. This kit contains a plastic "pharoah" body with a cavity inside that holds his internal organs. After you assemble the canopic jars, remove the organs, place them in the appropriate jar, and top them with super-cool authentic-looking lids. Then put the body back together and wrap with included gauze. We felt there wasn't enough gauze, so I cut some white cotton into strips, which he unwrapped and wrapped again about 1,000 times! Now the kit is secure in his "treasure drawer" beside his bed. Very cool and fun! He learned a lot.
awsom kit.......2007-01-10
this kit was just what we needed in order to get an a on the paper
Cool, but overpriced.......2006-07-19
My kids (10 & 11) had fun exploring this. No one has yet discovered the "craft" side of it. Still it would be a nicer treat from the Clearance isle. Full price is a little much for what you get.
Time intensive cutting and gluing for assembly.......2006-07-16
Time intensive cutting and gluing of small pieces. Frustration level of trying to get all the little pieces to stay together with glue overshadowed the learning. My daughter loves Egyptian history, but became bored with this kit because of the time involved in putting the canopic jars and cat mummy together. Would have been much better if kit had come with premade canopic jars (or something easier to assemble.)
Best of the Best.......2006-01-19
Like many kids his age, my seven year old son is VERY interested in mummies. (I think it's one of those ways kids cope with beginning to understand the concept of death and death rituals, so I figure it's okay to indulge his macabre interests!!) Anyways, I paid $19.99 for this kit at a local museum, and even at five dollars more than the Amazon price, it was a great value! The enclosed book that comes with the kit is terrific on it's own. It starts by explainging about ancient Egyptian mummies, the rituals surrounding their production, and why these rituals were important to the ancients. As the book describes the rituals in very kid-friendly but still no-holds-barred kind of way, your child can follow along with the enclosed kit pieces to make his own super-cool mummy. There are even canopic jars! The book then goes on to describe where else mummies can be found and discusses how some are intentionally made by man while others occur naturally due to environmental conditions. Top notch all the way through!

Book Description
Who is plundering the tombs of ancient Memphis? A brother and sister solve the mystery in this diary full of intriguing details about daily life in Egypt 3,500 years ago.
What was it like to be an aspiring young scribe in Egypt, circa 1500 BC? Picture it through the eyes of nine-year-old Nakht, who has just moved with his family to bustling Memphis, where his father has a prestigious new job. As Nakht takes up his own (often boring) lessons, little does he know that he and his sister, Tamyt, will soon stumble upon a sinister plot involving the robbing of nearby tombs — and will actually catch the high-ranking mastermind at a banquet inside their own house! As a reward, the siblings are invited to the royal palace in Thebes to meet none other than King Hatshepsut, whom they are shocked to discover is a woman — one of few female kings in ancient Egyptian history. Brimming with lively, detailed illustrations and bolstered with endnotes, a timeline, and a glossary, this newest tale from the author of CASTLE DIARY and PIRATE DIARY is sure to stir readers' interest in one of the most fascinating eras in history.
Customer Reviews:
my kids love this.......2006-08-02
my kids (7 and 5) could't get enough of this - probably their favourite bedtime storybook this year. The book has great pictures and the mysterious tomb robbery kept us reading avidly. Along the way we learnt more about everyday life in ancient Egypt than from any number of the usual history books for kids. The book also works as a starting point for exploring some of the features of ancient Egypt (necessarily) only briefly touched on.
ancient history as fiction- great home education.......2006-06-23
I'm doing ancient history with my first grader, starting with the Egyptians. This is giving a very nice overview of the culture, in a format that a first grader is enthralled with. It goes along well with short readings from other about Egypt types of books.
Product Description
The Pyramid Texts are the oldest body of extant literature from ancient Egypt. First carved on the walls of the burial chambers in the pyramids of kings and queens of the Old Kingdom, they provide the earliest comprehensive view of the way in which the ancient Egyptians understood the structure of the universe, the role of the gods, and the fate of human beings after death. Their importance lies in their antiquity and in their endurance throughout the entire intellectual history of ancient Egypt. This volume contains the complete translation of the Pyramid Texts, including new texts recently discovered and published. It incorporates full restorations and readings indicated by post–Old Kingdom copies of the texts and is the first translation that presents the texts in the order in which they were meant to be read in each of the original sources.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Source Material.......2007-05-16
Allen's translation and take on the Pyramid Texts is both profound and a wonderful read. Rather than just dry translation Allen uses the English language the way it was meant to be used. I would highly recommend this book to any student of Egypt. This is the source material combined with the translations of Faulkner and Budge among others one can gain a comprehensive insight into ancient Egypt from various view points without a lot of the "New Age" hoopla that surrounds so many recent publications concerning Ancient Egypt.
It boosts self-confidence and places the individual in his centre.......2006-11-22
As psychologist I recommend this book. It boosts self-confidence and places the individual in the centre of the universe and nature. We can find ourselves in this book. It's the proto Bible if we see gods as principles. We see here that all teachings of Moses and Jesus are Egyptian too, besides G'd given or according to nature. The content is so powerful that it even can create worldpeace. Pyramids are 'good news books'.

Gods, Goddesses & Mummies, Oh my! -- a review of "Egyptian Gods and Goddesses" .......2007-09-21
So many beginning readers are fiction, so it is nice to run across something in the non-fiction genre. This particular book's focus is death and the afterlife in ancient Egypt. It begins with a discussion of the more familiar gods -- Osiris, Isis and Anubis -- what they looked like and what attributes they had. It then goes on to describe the dangers to the soul that were thought to exist as it transitioned from life to death. Including the final judgement at the end.
Other points of interest are the burial practices. The book actually goes into a considerable detail about how mummies were made. Very cool, but not gross. There is also a discussion of pyramids including some of the typical contents that might be found inside: items such as glassware, chairs, and musical instruments. Examples of cuneiform are shown. The book finishes by noting that modern Egyptians are mostly Muslim and that they pray to one god - Allah.
The publisher lists this book as a Level Two and suggests it as a practice reader for those in first, second, and third grades. However, the Accelerated Reading designation for this book is 3.2 -- which means that that group feels that the book is best suited for new Third Graders.
[The AR designation is a general "guide" that rates books on a relative scale of difficulty. Children can certainly read at levels above or below their group range, so that this number should only be used as a aid to help choose books that are appropriate and not frustrating.]
You find vocabulary words such as: festival, people, prayed, thousand, special, powers, brought, warmth, guarded, warriors, protected, etc.
Four Stars. Okay Read-aloud. In general, I think this book is a nice introduction to a historical period most young children wouldn't otherwise be exposed to for years. Content is fascinating and even I learned something.
Annoyingly there is no pronunciation guide. Most adults may know the names, but children probably won't.
Good for a unit on Egypt.......2007-03-17
While there are a lot of sight-words in this book, it is very accessible for novice readers. I got this book alone with easy readers on the Nile and King Tut for a unit we did on Egypt. It could also be useful for a unit on ancient mythology (when paired with books on Ancient Roman and Greek myths).
entertaining introduction to Egyption Gods, for kids.......2006-07-10
Beautifully illustrated children's book. Gives basics of Egyptian Gods and Goddesses, ancient Eryptian beliefs in afterlife, mummies, pyramids, and more. Great for kids, with or without a trip to the museum!
Great Start for Kids.......2001-09-08
My young daughter has gotten into mythology and ancient religion and this is one of the few books I've found geared towards the young reader. It contains a lot of good beginner information about the Gods/Goddesses of Egypt. I highly recommend this book for the Level 2 reader.
Egyptian Gods and Goddesses.......2000-07-05
This book is good for people just starting out on studying mythology. It was a little simplistic but easy to follow, some books on mythology can getting confusing if you aren't good at remembering who is who but this one was easy to keep track with.
Customer Reviews:
Humor and Mummy go together.......2005-05-01
When my 5 year old took an interest in mummies we went searching the library for books on mummies. "You Wouldn't Want to be and Egyptian Mummy" instantly became his favorite. This book puts you in the seat of being the mummy and goes through the steps of you going from dead to becoming a mummy and beyond. This book (and the series) provides a great learning tool while mixing in humor.

Book Description
For more than 15 centuries, no one could read the strange-looking Egyptian hieroglyphs. And then in 1799 a French soldier in Napoleon's army in Egypt stumbled across the Rosetta Stone, an ancient inscription recorded in Greek, hieroglyphs, and demotic script. Many of the brightest scholars of the time--Egyptologists, historians, and linguists--as well as detectives, professional code breakers, and plain amateurs, all set out to decipher the forgotten words. Carol Donoughue tells us the fascinating story of the hieroglyphs and the race to decipher them, explaining how this curious writing system began with simple drawings of everyday objects. She compares the hieroglyphic system to modern alphabets in an entertaining narrative complemented with numerous photographs and drawings, maps, historical timelines stretching from ancient Egypt to Napoleon, a glossary, and numerous sidebars. The book culminates in an edge-of-your-seat description of how the brilliant French archaeologist Champollion finally succeeded in deciphering the hieroglyphs. A final section displays an alphabet of "hieroglyphs" and offers some fun activities for children based on hieroglyphic writing.
Customer Reviews:
loaded with details, brings history to life.......2002-10-20
This book tells of the discovery of the Rosetta Stone and about attempts to break the code of the hieroglyphs and demotic script. We learn of the various men who tried to break the code and about the successful young man who finally did break the code. The book also tells about who currently owns the Rosetta Stone and the journey and literal fighting that took place over its ownership.
Through this story the reader is introduced to what hieroglyphs are and what demotic script is. Battles are very lightly touched upon, enough to explain why the Egyptians began writing in Greek as well. (The Rosetta stone tells the same story in Hieroglyphs, Demotic script, and Greek and was the key to breaking the hieroglyphic code.) The reader is kept in suspense about the meaning and the decoding of the hieroglyphs...as the discoveries are made the code is revealed to us in bits and pieces. For example we start off not knowing if the symbols stand for sounds of a spoken word or for literal translations to objects/animals, etc. In the end the hieroglyphs are spelled out and the reader is given several examples to try to interpret their meaning. Some of the basic writing rules are clearly discussed such as that the writing can go left to right or right to left, and we are to follow the face of the animal shapes to tell us which way to go. Writing can be vertical and the symbols can be backwards or forwards! There are no punctuation marks, sentences or paragraphs, it all runs together.
There are photographs, illustrations, timelines, and maps throughout this book, which add to the experience. This is loaded with text, it is not as skimpy in text or detail as some books that publishers group into this same age category. Yet it is not as loaded or illustration-driven as the DK/Eyewitness books (as a comparison comment, not a complaint).
I especially enjoyed the details about the life of Jean Francios Champollion, the man who broke the code of the hieroglyphs. Taught to read at a young age and homeschooled by his older brother for most of his life, he was devoted to reading and learning foreign languages from an early age. He disliked math and science and chose instead to study languages. His devotion to his passion lead to his decoding the Rosetta Stone and later to fundraising to pay for an expedition to Egypt. He was so passionate about the bringing history of Egypt to others that he persuaded the King of France to acquire many Egyptian artifacts and he became the curator of the Egyptian museum of the Louvre, which still is on display today. This is all told in an interesting way in this book. We can all learn something from Champollion, to follow our interests, teach our children what they are most interested in, and to excel in one area (of study) can lead to great things if the passion is allowed to flourish. This is a great contrast to our American public educational system today, which wants excellence in many areas of study (and covers each lightly) and doesn't allow time or energy to be spend one or two areas of specialized interest.
My only complaint is that I found the questions posed to the children annoying ("what do you think this means..." and such). I don't think children need to be directed to think about something, it happens to each of us as we read. Perhaps we don't all wonder about the same thing at the same paragraph in a book but that is OK. Sometimes the questions asked the child to interpret something but then the true answer is never revealed which is annoying and I feel leaves the reader feeling incompetent and possibly frustrated to have a curiosity sparked but left without the correct answer, wondering if they are correct or not.
This is a great book to tell the story of unlocking the mystery of the Rosetta Stone and an easily understood introduction to hieroglyphics (and the two other languages) used by the Egyptians. This book really brings history to life.
An unusual and beautiful book!.......2000-06-13
This short (48 pages) book simply and intelligently tells the story of the decipherment of the Egyptian hieroglyphs for children. It is illustrated with beautiful artwork and is a worthy gift for an artistic, curious middle-school child.
