Book Description
Tony thinks it's dumb to go all the way to Liberty Island for a birthday picnic. But that's before he understands what the Statue of Liberty means to Grandma.
Customer Reviews:
Reviewing A Picnic In October.......2003-11-23
A Picnic In October is about a family who goes to the Statue of Liberty each year on Lady Liberty's birthday. A young boy learns why his grandparents started this tradition.
Grandma and Grandpa immigrated to the United States from another country due to harsh situations. As soon as they arrived in the U.S. they went to the Statue and thanked Her for letting them intor her country. So each year since they arrived, Grandma and Grandpa bring the whole family to Lady Liberty on her birthday for a picnic as a way of thanking her.
The pictures fit the text well by helping the reader see and feel the emotions this story tells. The reader can see how important this event really was for the grandparents as well as the rest of the family.
A Picnic in October.......2003-11-13
This is a fantastic book! I use it in my 4th grade classroom in conjunction with a study of the Statue of Liberty, but it also speaks to many other issues such as immigration, respect for grandparents and patriotism. As always, Eve Bunting has beautiful illustrations that work so effectively with the text. In light of the events of 9-11, this book is even more meaningful and evoked a discussion of the Twin Towers shown in the skyline of New York.
A Picnic In October.......2002-10-19
This book is about a boy and it's his grandma's birthday. They go to see the Statue of Liberty. They have a picnic and a wonderful time. The boy hates the party. Anyway, it has the most beautiful pictures. I recommend this book to people who love the Statue of Liberty.
A Picnic in October.......2000-09-18
Tony cannot understand why every year his family has to lug picnic supplies and even a birthday cake to the Statue of Liberty. It seems silly to him to celebrate a statues' birthday. As the day progresses, Tony begins to understand what the statue represents to immigrant families such as his. This is a beautifully written and illustrated book. The text is touching and meaningful. The illustrations capture the emotions of the text perfectly. This would be an excellent book to introduce the concept of immigration or to present to a child taking a trip to the Statue of Liberty.

No more questions.......2005-07-19
This book not only answered all the questions my 5 year old Davey had, it kept him persuing his determination to "read the big words" as soon as he could. Wonderful, informative reading for all ages.
Great book for young readers.......2004-09-06
This was a fun and relatively easy read for our 5 year old child. The words are easy enough to read and the illustrations are beautiful. We went to see the statue earlier this year and this book came home with us from the gift shop. It was great to hear our child read it on the ferry boat as we left Liberty Island. It was a welcome gift for our child and will be a source of fond memories. If your child has never seen the statue and you're planning on seeing it, this book would be a nice preview for him/her. If your child has already gone there, this would make for a nice memory builder. It is great for a child about 4-6 years old with an affection for the statue and who is interested in learning to read or build up their early reading skills.

Questions answered.......2005-07-19
This book gives a perfect response to the questions of a very inquisitive 5 year old--His teacher told a story of Lady Liberty and he was loaded with questions about her-- this book filled in the blanks--Super reading for a child and his Grampy or Grammy.
Lovely story of Lady Liberty.......2002-10-20
I also use this book in my classroom and third graders love it. They are fascinated with the size and grandeur of the Statue of Liberty. This book tells the history of the Statue in simple text and large, vivid illustrations. (Did you know that he made it to look like his mother?) I recommend this book for 7-9 year olds. It will expand their horizons and leave them hoping that someday they will see the Statue in person.
Wonderful Story.......2002-07-25
My 2 year old is facinated with the Statue of Liberty. So before we visited her in person, I wanted to find a simple worded book with lots of captivating pictures and found this one. It really does an excellent job of telling the story of how America obtained Lady Liberty. We would highly recommend this book to any American Patriot!!
Statue of Liberty.......2000-04-16
The text and especially the illustrations in this book were just what I needed to explain to my kindergarten students what it would be like to visit the Statue of Liberty. The illustrator shows an aerial view of the statue on Liberty Island, the ferry needed to reach the island, and New York City in the far background. He continues with pictures showing the construction of the statue to the impressive fire works celebration on the Fourth of July. The author explains the building of the statue as well as the purpose. If you had only one book to explain the Statue of Liberty to school age children, I would recommend using "The Story of the Statue of Liberty" by Betsy Maestro and illustrated by Giulio Maestro.
Book Description
For more than a century, the Statue of Liberty has stood proudly in New York Harbor, welcoming people from near and far. Perfect for reading together with a young child, L Is for Liberty uses simple language and bold illustrations to celebrate the statue, her history, and the freedom she stands for.

Americana.......2006-07-10
A great reflection upon our ideals which continue to carry over from one generation to the next. Excellant visual depictions of of our American spirit. Vibrant and alive.
A terrific 4th of July book!.......2004-08-24
L is for Liberty is a book that is beautifully illustrated. I am looking forward to sharing this book with my daughter on the 4th of July. And introducing her to Lady Liberty and what she stands for. If I have a complaint it is that this book should also printed as a board book! A terrific addition to any home library!

After an exciting flight (Lisa's Airplane Trip), Lisa, the petite white dog from Paris, is ready for her big adventure in New York. With suave Uncle Harrison to show her around, what could possibly go wrong? The two visit the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, and best of all, Times Square! Alas, this is where Lisa and her uncle part ways--accidentally. Luckily, our earnest heroine is also pretty street smart. After asking a police officer for help, she's trying to get the attention of the woman at the information desk, when she hears an announcement: "Little Lisa, your uncle is waiting for you on the 64th floor." Saved!
If you're as much a fan of Anne Gutman and Georg Hallensleben's collaborative efforts as we are--or even if you've never met Lisa or Gaspard (Gaspard on Vacation), you'll be utterly charmed by Lisa in New York. Hallensleben's thick, smeary brush strokes are endlessly appealing, whether depicting the "funny-looking Flatiron Building" or a raring-to-go Lisa gazing out the window of her hip uncle's high-rise (he seems to have some Andy Warhol paintings on his wall!) (Ages 3 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Lisa visits her favorite uncle in New York City and sees the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Central Park. When she gets lost in Times Square while shopping for souvenirs, she is saved by her own cleverness—and a Statue of Liberty night-light.
Customer Reviews:
I LOVE this book!.......2005-11-26
When I was a child we use to go to visit my dad in NY. Us kids loved Times Square...the tacky souvenirs and dollar store. This book reminds me of those great memories. The illustrator is wonderful...I love all his books.
A Great Book for Kids.......2005-11-06
This is a great book for kids with beautiful imagery of New York. It also tells an important story of paying attention to one's surroundings. I would reccommend for kids of all ages.
FUN FOR NYC VISITORS.......2005-07-27
Charming, sweet, funny, and NYC is the backdrop! I'm surprised I'm the first to review this picturebook. I've often given it and/or My New York to young kids who visit me in the Manhattan. When we have older visitors (age 8 to 13), I give them a novel that I wrote, Melanie in Manhattan, which is the diary of a funny New York City eleven-year-old who becomes a tour guide in her own town. Come to NYC--and get your kids hooked on books! (...)
Customer Reviews:
Great historical fiction for young readers.......2007-01-15
This book was required 2nd grade reading for my daughter's language arts class. It is a beautiful story of ingenuity, that also gives children a glimpse of life during the industrial period of American history and teaches about the origination of the Statue of Liberty. A great little story!
Reading for Children's Literature is fun.........2001-09-05
I have to read 40 books for my Children's Lit class and my daughter had this book in her room, so I thought what the heck. I haven't asked her yet what she thought of it, but I'm sure my son has read it. Being that he is the avid reader like his mom but my daughter you would have to pull teeth. lol! But this book was interesting because it gave information such as how the Statue of Liberty was brought to America and how Lily made her crowns was given at the end. I am going to school to become a Elementary Teacher and this project would be a great idea to teach to my students.
history,art, math in one book!.......2000-05-17
This is a great book for Dr. E.D. Hirsch's Core Knowledge curriculum (look up his books on Amazon!). Second graders study the Statue of Liberty, and with this book the class can make the actual crown that Lily sold! The pattern is in the back of the book. The second graders at my child's school all made crowns and the teacher took a class picture of the project. Lots of fun for them.
a gir living in the year the Statue of Liberty is deliverd.......1999-05-01
This story is about a girl who is living in the year the statue of liberty is first broght to america. In her class the students are asked to bring money to help build the pedestal for the statue. When she tells her pearents about it, her mother does not think that it is a good Idea. the rest of the story is about how Lilly tries to riase money to bring in to her clase.
The story was quite charming, but the pictures were just to cutesywootsy for me. But the rest of the book was quite satisfactory. Something that I liked about it was that it was a book that it showed a very healthy respect of what immigrant life was like.I would recomend especialy to kids at about the third grade level if tey wanted a book that could show them how life was like in the past, but feel the emotions that Are still felt by peopel today

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free..."
Nearly 40 percent of all Americans today can trace their ancestry to people who passed directly beneath the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor after emigrating from Europe. The most colossal metal statue ever built, Lady Liberty represents the freedom and better way of life that immigrants sought in America. This big, elegant book traces the history of the "Mother of Exiles," from her inception at a dinner party in France, to model-building by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, a young French sculptor, to internal engineering by another young Frenchman named Eiffel, to its presentation from the French to the American people in 1886. Liberty is chock-full of compelling--sometimes overwhelming--details, including Eiffel's revolutionary use of iron girders in latticelike grids for the internal support, and the discord in the American committee charged with raising money for the pedestal. Always beaming through the facts, however, is the passion of Lady Liberty's creators and supporters. Lynn Curlee's gorgeous paintings capture the staggering size of both the project and the statue itself. This book is a stunning gift for anyone who has ever been awestruck at the first sight of the majestic symbol of America's freedom. It includes statue specifications, a timeline, and a bibliography. For another Curlee tribute to an American icon, read Rushmore. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free..."
Follow the journey of the Statue of Liberty from 1865 to today as it goes from being a mere glimmer in the eyes of two Frenchmen to becoming a colossal gift to the United States, a gesture of friendship between the two nations, a monument to the first hundred years of American independence, and a symbol of liberty for all.

Liberty: A statue born of admiration.......2000-06-10
The story behind the Statue of Libery is filled with suspense even though the happy ending is well known! This book attempts to have us think more deeply about this well known American icon. Born from a deep admiration for the American democratic experiment, like many other treasures it was conceived of by private citizens and funded in the most democratic way---by the people. The story of its conception and funding is more interesting than the technical details but it is complete in all aspects including the restoration. The illustrations add to the power of the writing.
Book Description
An introduction to the best from the new directions in U.S. immigration history
Representing a selection of the finest new research on immigration,
American Dreaming, Global Realities explores the ways in which immigrant lives and those of their children are shaped by transnational bonds, globalization, family ties, and personal choice, and the ways in which they engender a sense of belonging and a sense of themselves as âAmericans.â
American Dreaming, Global Realities considers a plurality of very specific historical, economic, regional, familial, and cultural contexts. This history reveals resistance and accommodation, both persistent older traditions and Americanization, plus the creation of new cultural forms blending old and new. The twenty-two interdisciplinary essays included in this collection explore the intricate overlapping of race, class, and gender on ethnic identity and on American citizenship.
