Dr. John Sarno caused quite a ruckus back in 1990 when he suggested that back pain is all in the head. In his bestselling book, Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection, he claimed that backaches, slipped discs, headaches, and other chronic pains are due to suppressed anger, and that once the cause of the anger is addressed, the pain will vanish. Relieved Amazon.com readers call this book "liberating" and say "it sounds too good to be true, but it is true." Sarno has returned with The Mindbody Prescription, in which he explains how emotions including guilt, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem can stimulate the brain to manufacture physical symptoms including fibromyalgia, repetitive strain injuries, migraine headaches, hay fever, colitis, ulcers, and even acne. If these psychosomatic problems all sound a little Freudian, what with the repression of emotions in the unconscious, it's because Sarno unapologetically borrows from Freud for the basis of his theory and cites childhood trauma as a major source of emotional problems. He also says that his program is a "talking cure" of sorts, since patients must be convinced their pain is rooted in their emotions before healing can begin.

The book reads a bit like psychology text, with Sarno quoting from psychoanalytic theorists including Heinz Kohut and Graeme Taylor and the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition). Sarno walks through the neurophysiology of mindbody disorders, lists the symptoms of dozens of disorders that he believes are emotion-based, and offers a basic program for overcoming psychosomatic pain and illness. His recovery plan includes meditation and sometimes psychotherapy, including behavior modification, and stopping any medication or physical therapy. While Sarno's ideas seem radical, they were commonly implemented earlier in the 20th century, when psychoanalysis was at its peak of popularity, and they promise to become more accepted in our current era of alternative medical therapies and anger management. --Erica Jorgensen

5 out of 5 stars worked for me.......2007-09-23

quick comment: I bought this book on a whim and it worked. Thank goodness I gave it a try. I'm back to my normal life style after 2 years of pain controlling my every move...

5 out of 5 stars This book has helped my sister and my best friend!.......2007-09-20

I purchased two copies of this for my sister and my best friend, both of whom have been suffering from a number of painful disorders. Both of them wrote to me very quickly after receiving the book and reported that it makes so much sense that they were excited and relieved to find such great information and ideas that were immediately helpful. I'm buying two or three more copies for other family and friends - it's a small price to pay for such wonderful results! Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars What a relief!.......2007-09-17

Nearly 10 years ago a friend told me about this book. I had upper back pain that I attributed to yoga. There was no definitive moment of injury. I just woke up with this pain in my neck that started radiating down my arm. No structural problem was found through xray. I went to a chiropractor and ran after 1 session (not for me) and then physical therapy. After 2 months (!) the hospital kicked me out of physical therapy (!!) with residual pain that I figured I'd just "deal with". It pretty much faded but every so often I'd have an attack and I'd go get a cortisone shot or accupuncture. Not too bad.

Then in 2004 I got the mother of all pains: a lower back/sciatica pain that settled in and wouldn't leave. Again, MRIs, Xrays, etc. found nothing. I thought it was because of a severe left leg fracture that required 2 surgeries and 1 years total in a cast and crutches. I figured it threw out my alignment. Interestingly though, I developed the pain a few days after I met my biological mother (as an adult) who abandoned me at birth. I recognized the significance but I could not imagine this much pain could be attributed to that. The pain kept on and I was getting worse every minute. I felt like dying because chronic pain is something that we just cannot live with. I got on strong painkillers and finally found 1 that didn't anesthetize me so I could function and feel normal. I also got Raynaud's phenomenon too, never mind bouts of IBS and constipation over the years.

After a couple of years of stability with the pain meds generally blocking the sciatica pain, my upper back/neck pain kicked in with a vengeance this summer. It'd come and go but finally it settled for good. I remembered Dr. Sarno and ran for this book. To be fair, I had my second physical therapy visit 3 days ago. The next day I read the first half of the book and today I finished it. Right now I can move my neck around like normal. Its a little tender but not like the cripple Quasimoto neck I felt I had on Fri., so bad that I was ready to kill someone.

I am a counselor and a therapist, so when I first picked up "Healing Back Pain" I thought I already knew what he was saying so what's the point of reading it. I knew that emotions affected the body. I just didn't think it could possibly be causing as much acute pain, in 1 specific spot, like I was then experiencing. Well, it does. I am a believer now. Like he described, the pain will just keep moving and in a way that cannot be accounted for by a structural problem. How is it that my left side sciatica every now and then moves to the right? Or that my upper typically left side neck pain is on my right? I guess you really have to get to a point where you are willing to believe it (sort of like the surrender process in recovery from substances), or be willing to try to believe it, in order for it to work. I am going to start working on my rage issues some more(yes, there are plenty of reasons for rage in my life, past and present) and see if that will alleviate the sciatica pain I'd written off as hopeless. Actually, speaking of rage, at the age of 10 years old I had these terrible, painful attacks in my liver area. No one could figure out why. At the age of 21, I was finally diagnosed in the ER with gallstones that were on the verge of bursting my gallbladder and so I had to have it removed. Because of my age no one had thought that I could be having gallbladder problems. In Chinese medicine, the liver/gallbladder is the seat of anger. Pretty telling.

5 out of 5 stars It worked for me.......2007-09-15

One previous reviewer states if you are scientifically minded, this book won't work for you. Well, I am not only scientifically minded, I am a scientist. Actually if you are a scientist and a bit familiar with empirical science and experimental design, it could make more sense because you will be less likely to misread it, and you could also check the medical literature, in particular evidence-based medicine reviews, yourself regarding the effectiveness of various traditional treatment modalities. I am grateful to Dr. Sarno. If you think TMS applies to you, I also recommend books by other authors who wrote about TMS, in particular Dr. Mark Sopher, Fred Amir, and Dr. Nancy Selfridge.

5 out of 5 stars Psychological explanation of apparently physical pain and its treatment.......2007-08-05

Firstly, like most things in life, this probably won't work for everyone. However, if you read it with an open mind and finish the book, its likely to help you.

Coming from a family of allopathic doctors, I was somewhat sceptical about the theory (TMS) proposed by Dr Sarno which he has termed Tension Myositis Syndrome. However, it is actually completely in line with allopathic medicine, he just believes that the cause of most pain is psychological/psychosomatic rather than simply a physical/structural one.

The crux of his theory is that the mind/brain employs a mechanism to deal with emotional/psychological problems that the sufferer is unable to acknowledge or deal with on a conscious level by initiating a seemingly physical response (normally by reducing the blood flow to a certain physical area) which produces real pain in that area so that the suffer is focused on the physical pain rather than dealing with in many ways much more debilitating psychological/emotional pain.

This relationship between the mind and the body is, Dr Sarno believes, a sort of defense mechanism.

Sarno is clearly a very learned and experienced Dr and has a vast amount of knowledge, not just of allopathic medicine but also psychiatry (Freud) and complementary therapies.

His writing style is very simple and straightforward but very well researched and explained and he gives case studies to back up his claims. For what it's worth his theory and treatment method has been endorsed by several well-known celebrities including Anne Bancroft (RIP) and Howard Stern.

My personal experience was that I was suffering from excrutiating back and shoulder pain which rendered me unable to work using a computer. This made me extremely depressed as it limited me physically and had a big psychological impact. After numerous costly sessions at the osteopath and extensive physiotherapy I was not getting any better. I came across this book online and as a last resort I bought it. After reading the book I started to slowly feel better and now, two years on, my pain has completely gone. I occasionally get the odd twinge but I now know that it is nothing structural and will dissipate and that it is likely a referred emotional worry. As soon as I recognised this consciously and allowed myself to accept the possibility that there was something bothering me that I was unable/unwilling to face, I found the pain subsided.

If you want to buy just one book on this subject, then this is the one

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on RSI.......2006-11-10

This is by far the best source of information and guidance on RSI that I've ever seen. It's the only book (along with dr. Pascarelli's books) that explains the true causes of RSI symptoms. It will help you understand what's happening to you if you have RSI, and it will help you manage your symptoms and find appropriate treatment. It's a must-have book if you live in an area or country where RSI specialists are hard to find.

5 out of 5 stars Career saving.......2006-07-13

When I was managing a software development group, a programmer on the team showed up at work one day with wrist braces. Turns out typing had become agony for him. He read this book, then diligently and conscientiously followed some of the recommended practices (strength training, yoga, serious workplace ergonomic changes). The wrist braces are gone, and his career has been saved.

You can't fix anything just by reading a book. You *can* fix things when you understand the problem and have some ways to combat it. This book can give you both.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2006-02-20

I bought this book after all the glowing reports and am happy to say it lived up to my expectations. Just improving my posture (one of the suggestions) has helped with my RSI.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Want To Know Where I'd Be Without This Book.......2005-10-15

I have been putting off writing my review because I have so much to say and in the meantime my hands are not yet a hundred percent. BUT it is thanks to this book (in conjunction with THE TRIGGERPOINT THERAPY WORKBOOK, which I found later) that I am not disabled today. The doctors I went to were not only shockingly unkind but dangerously misinformed...so I feel it is my duty to pass the info. on ASAP and I will revise this review later.

It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome! is the very best book out there dealing exclusively with repetitive strain injuries. What is great about this book is that it alerts you to the potential severity of the problem without terrifying you - it puts the time frame for healing easily at 6 months and possibly longer. Until I read this book, I had NO idea what was going on.

It offers charts to help you determine if you are a 1st degree, 2nd degree, or 3rd degree sufferer. It divides injuries into two basic categories: muscular and nerve. I would like to add that in my case there was also ligament injury, which was not discussed in this book. It also profiles the personality type that can become more vulnerable to this kind of an injury: perfectionist, obsessive, passionate about work.

My advice is that when it comes to books about this topic, read ABOUT them all carefully and then get all of the ones you need -even if you have to put them on a credit card, your HANDS are at stake! That being said, if you could only get two books this should definitely be one of them. Thank you so much Suparna Damany and Jack Bellis for illuminating this mysterious problem and analyzing it from a new angle.

Other Books I used and that you must look into to get a clear picture:

THE TRIGGER POINT THERAPY WORKBOOK by Clair Davies. Okay, finding IT was basically a miracle, because it provided the missing piece that NONE of the other books on RSI really explore. It is the only book that helped me even more than It's not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I won't describe it here but the look inside this book feature on Amazon allows one to read the introduction. Basically, Suparna Damany and Jack Bellis got me through the first half of the healing process, and Clair Davies got me though the second half.

COMPLETE GUIDE TO REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY by Emil Pascarelli: informative but terrifying, only read it AFTER you've read the others to better understand the dangers. But know this: braces can occasionally cause great damage, and a condition called RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Unlikely but horrific and important to be aware of so if the symptoms show up you can do something about it.

CONQUERING CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME by Sharon J. Butler: very nice exercises that seem to help a lot of people (though I was too injured by the time I found this book). Sharon Butler also has an online book dealing with DeQuervain's (a thumb injury) which was good and the only book out there specifically about this particular injury.

THE CARPAL TUNNEL HELPBOOK by Dr. Scott M. Fried: if you suspect nerve damage, this book is very encouraging about your prospects for recovery - and is the only book I found to deal exclusively with nerve issues. Also gave me the idea to just buy my own paraffin unit rather than pay for physical therapy every week.

FREE YOUR BREATH, FREE YOUR LIFE by Daniel Lewis.

LIGAMENT HEALING by William Weintraub.

FINALLY: PRISCILLA'S YOGA STRETCHES is an incredible TV program I discovered that comes on at 5:30am weekday mornings in my area on one of the PBS stations (apparently Priscilla Patrick has had exercise programs on PBS since 1980). Supposedly it is shown or can be requested all around the U.S., and it too played a critical role in helping me to heal and also maintain- better than any exercise class I've ever taken. Her videos can also be ordered (I plan to get the one called Stretch and De-Stress which targets neck, back, arms, shoulders) but I have not done so yet because with the TV show it's not really necessary.

Well, good luck and please, please, please get ALL the information you need to avert a potential disaster! Go sit in Barnes & Noble and look through these books if you're not ready to buy. But save yourself NOW. Also don't fall into despair! I was messed up for well over a year but once I had the right info I healed quite quickly! Without the work of all these amazing people I don't want to know where I'd be.

5 out of 5 stars THE BULLETPROOF FIREWALL!!.......2006-05-22

Are you getting ready to take your Check Point certification exam? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Robert Stephens, Barry Stiefel, Stephen Watkins, Simon Desmeules and Eli Faskha, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that is the perfect reference for anyone migrating from earlier versions of Check Point's flagship firewall/VPN product; as well as, those deploying VPN-1/FireWall-1 for the first time.

Stephens, Stiefel, Watkins, Desmeules and Faskha, begin by discussing the various methods that are deployed among different firewall vendors and open source solutions. Then, the authors discuss the significant changes between NG AI and NGX and partitions these changes into eight major categories. They continue with a review of what must be done prior to the actual installation and configuration of a Check Point environment. Next, the authors guide you through the necessary steps to perform the NGX upgrade. Then they take you on a tour of the interface used to configure your NGX installation: the SmartDashboard. They also discuss the need for tracking and walk you through a few configuration examples. Then, they discuss both basic and advanced concepts for network security and reveal how Check Point's technologies supply relief for current threats. The authors continue by showing you how to enable or disable Network Address Translation for a single host, for a range of addresses, or for an entire network. Next, they address the best way to authenticate users so they can access privileged resources. Then, the authors show you how Check Point FireWall-1 can integrate with third-party products. They continue by focusing on configuring site-to-site VPNs and the different design considerations that are involved. Next, the authors discuss the increasing number of employees that are either working comfortably at home or just simply away from the office, who need corporate access as if working locally. Then, they examine the functionality of SmartUpdate as a SmartConsole client in your Check Point environment. They also take you on a tour of SecurePlatform with the different operating system capabilities and the Check Point supported add-ons to SPLAT. Next, the authors demonstrate how to set up SmartView Monitor in a way that will allow you to view all your security components that your SmartCenter manages. Finally, the authors show, first the reason why VoIP should be secured and, second, how it is done.

The goal of this most excellent book is to cover all of NGX's dramatic changes and new, enhanced features. More importantly, you will learn how to secure the integrality of your network's data, communications, and applications from a multitude of blended threats.

5 out of 5 stars All the new NGX features.......2006-03-17

Any familiar with prior versions of Check Point's firewall program and newcomers to CheckPoint alike will find CONFIGURING CHECK POINT NGX VPN-1/FIREWALL-1 an important overview of all the new features in NGX. From working with the SmartView Tracker tool and understanding how a Check Point VPN-1 Pro Gateway administrator evolves to work into network security to handling authentication and integrity issues globally, everything from building the platform to licensing is covered in detail. An excellent survey of all the enhanced features and changes.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book.......2006-02-17

'Configuring Check Point NGX VPN-1/Firewall-1' by Robert Stephens is another good book by Syngress for IT Professionals. Syngress has really focussed on IT setup and configuration for it's latest releases of books and they have done a solid job. Packing over 600 pages of material into this guide, if you use Checkpoint at your job, you would be wise to pick up a copy of this book for your desk at work.

4 out of 5 stars Near the official courseware.......2006-01-25

This book is written by many respected authors and security professionals. Among them there is Barry J. Stiefel, the man who founded the first Check Point User Group (www.cpug.org).

I'm a Check Point Certified Instructor (CCSI) and can assure this book covers a lot of topics included in official Check Point VPN-1 NGX coursewares.

On Chapter 13 about Check Point VPN clients solutions it includes a Integrity technology discussion, acquired from ZoneLabs and to be merged with SecureClient.

On Chapter 14 it also includes a lot of details from the official Check Point SecurePlatform courseware.

The last chapter, Chapter 16 about VoIP, is even better than on the official course manual.

The book misses more details on some covered product features, coverage of some excluded features, OPSEC 3rd party interoperability examples, architectural problems discussion (like logging strategy, rulebase optimization, etc.), but it's a good book.

I strongly recommend it to anyone didn't take the course and want to have a wide coverage of many VPN-1 NGX features.
Who already attended the official course won't find here anything new.

5 out of 5 stars The only wind tunnel book available.......2002-12-08

This is the only book that contains everything one needs to know about sub sonic wind tunnel. For students doing a project or a course in experimental fluid mechanics, or those whose work involve aerodynamics, this will be a good reference. Anyone who has been through fluid mechanics courses during their undergraduate years know the importance of wind tunnel testing. This book covers topics from wind tunnel designs, to measurements, boundary corrections, testing procedures and the nonaeronautical applications of wind tunnel.

The original is the one book everyone in the wind tunnel test area had open on their desk. It covered everything from overall theory of aerodynamic testing to details of wind tunnel design. The revision brings it up to date with use of computers and digital test gear.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbingly brillant.......2007-10-10

This book left me thinking and disturbed for days afterwards. Simply amazing. Heinlein captures you and sucks you in completely.

5 out of 5 stars Survival science fiction.......2007-09-08

A great read. I enjoyed the approach to the survival mindset. The story is a bit of a reflection of the misogyny and chauvinism present in the American culture and reveals a perspective of white males. True equality of individuals is only accepted in the context of survival situations. The same can be seen in the Lewis and Clark expedition after reaching the pacific ocean. It is odd to see how the virtue of equality and altruism only thrives in dire circumstance. Without needs, humanity is prone to vice.

4 out of 5 stars One of his good ones........2007-07-29

With Heinlein there are two sorts of books, the ones aimed at teenage boys with lots of action and good hard sci fi, and the waffley semi religious strange ones he wrote in later life. Personally I liked both styles. Anyway this book is of the former sort, ideal for younger readers, but I enjoyed it too as this was one of the early gem's I missed in my youth.

5 out of 5 stars Ahead of its time, even for science fiction........2007-02-06

This was a terrific book for me to read as a pre-teen and teenager, and it's still a great read today. Heinlein's story is well-conceived, and it moves quickly; unlike so many 1000-pagers today, it keeps the reader's interest. Like most good science fiction novels, this one doesn't spend too much time dwelling on what makes it science fiction, it dwells on how people interact and react in the world that is established. A lasting impression from me was the postive, confident black female character in the book, which was ahead of its time in ways most science fiction of the time hadn't foreseen. Bravo to Heinlein for realizing that the future ambitions and success of humankind would show up in more than just the white male population.

5 out of 5 stars Tunnel in the Sky.......2007-01-12

My teacher, Mr. Fassold, read this book to us in my seventh grade class, and I'm glad he did. Normally I don't read science fiction books like this, but I had no choice. The book is about this kid in the future enrolled in advanced survial. He is a senior in high school enrolled in a college class. After somestrange events he finds that he must survive on his own without help longer then was expected.
I thought Robert Heinlein was very clever with his complete turn around of the plot and the universe he creates. I also admired the way the book is just as good now, as it was fifty years ago.
I would recomend this to anyone to anyone looking for a good read, regardless of the genres you normally read. The book is funny and it's characters are lively. This is one of the best books I have ever read and now I finally understand the saying, "I just couldn't put the book down."

5 out of 5 stars a book that opened my eyes.......2007-01-12

It's been four years now, that I wanted to have this book ! The first time I heard about Gann. I learned technical analisys, and the teacher mentioned Gann at the end of the course., only roughly, and left me with lots of question marks. I repeated the course, only to hear more about Gann, but the second time, he even said less. He only mentioned that there was a man, named william Gann, who had a " different way " to trade and the legend says he made millions. Well the millions of 1980 are not the ones nowadays, but still.. He said all is written in this book, and who wants to understand gann should read the book.
When finally I bought it, I read it in two days, and NOW, I understand so much more !
the book is not a novel, not fiction. he uses short, and matter of fact sentences. But for those who want to look " beyond" is a MUST ! .

5 out of 5 stars Beware of superbookdeals seller.......2006-06-19

Buy this book by all means, but not from superbookdeals - they don't
't deliever and they ignore emails.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time!.......2004-06-15

Gann was a good trader and self-promoter but was a lousy writer! He was supposed to have had a mystical key which unlocked the future movements of the markets. He never disclosed the mechanics of this key to his students, associates, or family members. Some of his forecasts were astounding while others were simply asinine. There is supposed to be a secret of market prognostication hidden in this book which might become apparent after the third reading. However, it is not likely that any but the most determined reader could get through this literary equivalent of a trip to the dentist's office more than once.

Much of Gann's reputation came from an article that Richard D. Wyckoff wrote in 1909 describing Gann's trading skills. However, it should be noted that Wyckoff wrote twenty years after this article that the greatest trader he had ever known was Jesse Livermore - not W. D. Gann! (Furthermore, Gann was not included in Wyckoff's top three traders!) I have known several Gann-type traders over the years but, aside from their hype, have never witnessed any great market foresight coming from these practitioners. In my observation, the most successful Gann-type traders appear to be trend-followers.

I have found that it is dangerous to bring preconceptions to the market place. The market is neither right nor wrong - it just IS! Preconceptions cause one to try to catch swing tops and bottoms. This is a hazardous, often financially-fatal practice. It is much safer to go with the flow. Trade with what you are experiencing - not because your forecast indicates that SPX should be trading at 1100 at 10:00AM on September 3.

1 out of 5 stars Far different from what I expected. A "Bible Code" book.......2003-04-02

This is the first Gann book I ever read. I expected it to be some kind of trading book that taught me about how one of the most famous traders of the last century developed and applied his technique like the Gann Line in the market, or something close to Reminiscences of a Stock Operator. However, this is a fiction of how somebody picking sentences here and there from the Bible, making propheses and earning bucks of gold in commodities markets.

I have been a Baptist for half of my life and I study Bible intensely. I certainly would appreciate other traders to turn to Christ as their personal Savior. I just dont buy into that "Bible Code" type of stuff and take the Bible as a means of fortune telling for money making.

Still I will read other Gann books in the future. However, I just cant recommend this as a trading book to anyone at all.

5 out of 5 stars Esoteric Masterpiece on Market Behaviour.......2003-02-07

There are certain literary endeavours which have several layers of meaning imbedded in them. This profound book is a very valuable key to economic independence. It requires patience and hard work and probably a life devotion to unwinding its esoteric meaning. Do not expect to read this once and obtain an understanding of what it means. This book requires a good deal of background in esoteric matters such as Astrology and Kabbalism; it also requires diligence because every line must be combed for veiled meanings. There is no quick scheme for riches here. If you enjoy learning, exploring and growing this book will reward you. If you are looking for a get rich quick thing I don't think you will appreciate this work. To the discerning reader, I would suggest that once you have attained Mastery of all this, the irony is that the obtention of the riches becomes almost irrelevant, since you have obtained a wealth that far exceeds that of the mundane world!

You'll learn how to:

Avoid or treat common but debilitating repetitive stress injuries, including carpal tunnel syndrome

5 out of 5 stars Pain Free.......2007-04-07

I was diagnosed with DeQuervain's Tenosynitis. This book helped me handle the pain in 48 hours! I started doing just a few of the exercises and in 2 days I was better and I had this for months! I am still doing the exercises daily and the pain has not returned.

3 out of 5 stars This is an odd book.......2006-02-27

This is an odd book. He seems to talk out of both sides of his mouth: he tells you to use good ergonomic habits on one page, and on the next one to change the height of your chair, keyboard, etc., frequently so that you're not always "in the box" that makes everything be at the "right" angle. A good editor might have improved this book substantially.

What's best about this book is the inclusion of a couple of simple exercises that you can do almost anywhere, whenever you have a few minutes. I'd check this one out from the library rather than buying a copy for myself.

I might recommend his plain-vanilla "Pain-Free" book for most people instead.

3 out of 5 stars Some ok advice; some downright silly commentary.......2005-12-16

First, nearly every exercise Egoscue includes here has been borrowed or adapted from Yoga -- either from Asanas or restorative poses. He pretty much says so, but he doesn't say the Yogic work is more thorough. He does have some really goofy comments such as there is not benefit from ergonomic computer devices. A good ergonomic keyboard places your wrist flexion at the proper angle, and your fingers are not cramped as with traditional keyboards. Another weird comment is his rationale for why typist in the old days didn't get carpal tunnel. He claims it is because people were stronger then. I don't think so, considering the huge leap in women sports in high school & college. The true reason is because the old typewriters had no place to rest the wrists, a habit nowadays that puts pressure right on the carpal tunnel area. He does make one good common sense observation that the human body was designed to move around and not be constricted, and the less the body is in contact with a chair or any other object for long periods of time, the less stress on the body. All in all, a very skimpy book that could have been a 10 page brochure with a poster sized pull out for the exercises.

4 out of 5 stars It really works -- but only if you take the time!.......2005-09-20

Egoscue says that most chronic pain is caused by poor posture and poor body mechanics (e.g., moving wrong). The solution -- a set of stretches that teach you good posture and good body mechanics. These "E-cises" are gentle and easy to perform. They do take a bit of time -- more than an hour for people who use PCs all day -- but the results are amazing. The biggest problem with this book can only addressed by the reader: this advice does you no good unless you lay down and do the E-cises. Don't let the lengthy time daunt you though -- the time required shrinks after a few weeks, and the relief is well worth it. The 5-minute stretches are helpful, too. The reviewers who didn't like this book all sound like they never actually tried the E-cises.

I'd give this book 5-stars, but I must in honesty admit that Egoscue's book "Pain Free" is superior.

5 out of 5 stars changes way of thinking.......2005-03-11

I stopped thinking about taking rest and got into activity after reading this book. The explanation of DROM and IROM is great. I do not do the e-cizes cause i am lazy. But still it has taught me how to approach pain caused by PC.

Sharon Butler was working as a massage therapist and Hellerwork practitioner when she developed carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. Unable to sleep through the night because of the pain and concerned about her livelihood, she built upon her knowledge of connective tissue and developed a series of stretching exercises to gently relieve the tension in her body. After daily stretching in this way, her pain soon subsided. To prove that these exercises weren't just a fluke, Butler intentionally overworked her body to bring back her symptoms. While this may not have been the smartest move, her stretching program again relieved her pain.

The magic behind her powerful exercises is their focus on fascial tissue. Fascia, which is stronger than steel, holds the body together. It wraps around muscle fibers, bones, and tendons. (If you've ever looked at an uncooked piece of chicken and noticed the glistening white layer over the meat, you've seen fascia.) In people who overwork their bodies, the fascia hardens, a natural response to prevent future injury. Unfortunately, this stiffness worsens with repeated insults to the body. Muscles, nerves, and tendons tense up and inflame even more and may even adhere to each other. Metabolic waste products can build up and become trapped instead of being carried away by the lymph system, and even more pressure is placed on the affected body tissues.

Enter Butler's exercises. The book is arranged to let you pick and choose the correct stretches to suit your needs. Too much typing, guitar playing, or gardening? Stiff neck, tingling fingers, sore upper arms, or all three? However you developed your repetitive strain injury and whatever your upper-body symptoms (or if you're smart and you'd like to prevent such problems), there are multiple stretches in Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome to suit your needs. The book is arranged to help users develop a personalized stretching program with more than 40 stretches for the upper body, forearms, wrists, fingers, and thumbs to choose from. Butler thoroughly explains the importance of stretching and the correct (and incorrect) way to do it, and the exercises are lucidly illustrated.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book - the stretches work!.......2007-04-25

I'd only be repeating the praises others have given this book, but I just want to say I highly recommend this book. The stretches are explained clearly and simply and they do work. I've bought this book for friends and when they follow the exercises, they get relief. Another plus, is doing the stretches FEELS so good and it only takes maybe 15 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent set of stretches for large variety of carpal tunnel types.......2007-03-15

This book was loaned to me at my job as a computer engineer. I had carpal tunnel affecting my wrists & forarm. Excellent, easy stretches which really relieve the pain. I recommended it to a friend who cleans houses for a living, and she was able to stop wearing the arm brace. Great for those tiny, hard to stretch muscles.

5 out of 5 stars Great self help book!.......2006-11-10

Excellent guide to conquering several medical pains/problems that most doctors would have to diagnose.

5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL for me, but maybe not just this book..........2006-06-17

I have been experimenting with many strategies to get rid of carpal tunnel in my right hand, including learning how to write and do housework with my left hand. I do the exercises for both hands at the same time so that my left hand doesn't develop the same problem. With these exercises
and a hand brace when sleeping, pain at night went away. But if I forget to do the exercises on one day, I pay for it the next day through pain and decreased range of motion so I know they are essential. The carpal tunnel has not all gone away after several months of doing the exercises, however, just improved. Perhaps I need to do them more often. Be careful when you do them - she is not kidding when she says go GENTLY. More force is worse. The other thing that seems to be helping me is pilates.

4 out of 5 stars A helpful book for anyone with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. .......2006-03-17

I ordered this book for my wife, who has had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) in her right wrist for some time. It recently got worse after she fell off her bike and broke a couple of bones in the same wrist. The bones have healed, but the accident somehow increased the CTS symptoms: tingling sensations, numbness and a general increase in CTS aggravation. She has found this book, Conquering CTS, informative and helpful. After reading it and doing the excercises, for about a month now, she has found that not all the exercises suit her particular condition. So, she has, through trial and error, found which excercises in the book are helpful. They work, and help relieve the sypmtoms. So, I would recommend this book to anyone who has CTS. It is not a cure-all, in my wife's case, but it has made a difference. I would buy it, read it, try the exercises and find which ones work best for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-10-16

While people are well familiar with a ganre of philosophical fiction, Bollas breaks new ground by introducing us to "psychological fiction." In this wonderfully engaging book, he introduces us to to the inner world of an analyst, a thoughtful and civilized man, contemplating life.

3 out of 5 stars nice try.......2006-11-11

Bollas has written some brilliant books of non-fiction. This try at fiction is much weaker, and the characters are little more than characatures or vehicles for ideas. Still I believe Bollas is to be commended for trying a new form and some of his usual wonderful insights still shine through. The book is a quick and easy read for those who may not want to devote the time to his more weighty and far more interesting works.
(Excuse my spelling -- I'm hopeless without spell check.)

5 out of 5 stars Darkness Illuminates Life.......2005-09-10

This book contains "Life as an Object", a paper that has already become a classic in psychoanalytic circles. In this chapter and throughout the book, Bollas uses fictional characters, exaggerated plots, and sprightly humour to illuminate hidden areas of psychic life. He dares his reader to contemplate life as a "thing in itself", something that we are all in relationship to. Through stories of the main character's ("the psychoanalyst's") life, Bollas imperceptibly touches his reader, creating eerie moments of emotional discovery without a clear trace. The experience of reading "Dark at the end of the tunnel" is an encounter with life, and like life, the book is often difficult to bear. As one journeys with "the psychoanalyst" through exchanges with friends, colleagues and patients, one confronts depressing moods: fear of dying, awareness of human frailty, social psychosis, and loss of faith, among others. However, representing the full array that life can offer, one will also be impressed by the hilarious, clever, beautiful and the deeply evocative.
