Book Description

This book and beautifully illustrated deck draw on the ancient Lakota ritual of healing and purification known as the sacred Inipi, or sweat lodge ceremony, which has existed in the Lakota culture for thousands of years. The cards and accompanying book comprise a self-contained and highly original system that will help you harness creative energies to deal with issues that are of concern in your life. Used for self-discovery rather than divination, the cards gently guide you toward inner growth and self-knowledge in the time-honored tradition of the Lakota people.

Fifty cards, illustrated in vibrant color, access the powerful symbols and teachings of the Inipi, capturing the spirit of this ancient ceremony.

In a variety of spreads the authors show you how the cards can provide you with an expanded vision of your being and purpose, offering an intimate sense of walking in balance between the conscious world and the world of spirit.

Publication coincides with the U.N. Year of Indigenous People.
Archie Fire Lame Deer is one of the leaders of the Native American spirituality movement.

5 out of 5 stars Divination in many forms. Creator knows his path........2004-07-26

As a follower of the Red Road, I rebuke the individuals claim that this is "Nativism (tarot with a feather on it)". As a matter of fact, if the individual owns the cards at all - there is hypocrisy abound.
Tarot is comprised of a Major Arcana and a Minor Arcana, with over 70 cards and more than twice the interpretations - as the cards have meanings when forward, reversed (upside-down), and even sideways.
The Lakota Sweat Lodge Deck - a deck I've been using for many years, consists of 50 cards that do NOT reverse (they only can be read in the forward position).
Tarot focuses on fortune telling, a path of gypsies and witches and mystics. Chief Lame Deer is focusing on Healing, and irregardless of the methods he chooses to employ in doing so - whether it be by piercing at the Sundance, or crafting these cards - he still is doing Wakan Tanka's work ...

These cards .... "speak" .... to me. I have never used the book as more than a nice fallback item in case their is no use for a reading and the message isn't clear. But the vibrance in the artwork, the messages it reveals, is beyond words. Simply holding the deck gives me a sense of the Chief's fullfilment in Creator's Gifts. I respect what The authors, illustrators, and publishers have allowed me to share with others.

This is THE BEST DECK I OWN. I own many and, quite simply, the energy from most "Tarot" type decks do not work with my own - they even seem to counter it. This energy ... flows.

As with Black Elk;

"I cured with the power that came through me.

"Of course, it was not I who cured, it was the power from the Outer World, the visions and the ceremonies had only made me like a hole through which the power could come to the two-leggeds.

"If I thought that I was doing it myself, the hole would close up and no power could come through.

"Then everything I could do would be foolish."

These cards help to create that hole from which the power flows.

Mitakuye Oyasin, Aho.

People see the author's name and assume the book/cards have some sort of legitimacy as representatyions of American Indian traditions. But this EXACTLY the sort of cultural misappropriation that we have been resisting for decades--the endless charade of "shamans," hucksters, new-age "culture vultures" and mysticism-disguised-as-Indianism (tarot with a feather on it!).

Please, readers, understand that this is NOT a fair, accurate, useful, or even respectful representation of Lakota (or ANY Indian) traditions. Go read some Vine Deloria, jr. or James Treat instead.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Tarot I Own.......2003-01-24

This is one of the most powerful tarots I have ever worked with. Not only is it good for divination, but it also gives you positive affirmations, and even some ritual ideas for getting your own answers. If you are on a spiritual path that favors divination and self exploration this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Watch out, because these cards will hook you........2002-09-27

My favorite tarot deck was the OSHO Zen Tarot, but the Sweat Lodge cards are much more powerful. These cards gave me an insight into a meditation and riutal that I should do. It was one to heal and calm. Well I couldn't figure out what it was about, but soon dicovered why I needed it. I highly recommend this deck.

5 out of 5 stars Awakening.......2002-04-07

I found this deck in a 80% off bin in a bookstore. How could I go wrong, as an avid tarot and card collector. I had never heard of the deck, but once i got home and opened it, i was in for a real awakening. I had absolutely no idea how intuitive these cards would be. They are a great tool for self reflection and growth, and come with an informative book, and beautifully illustrated. A great tool for anyone interested in spirituality, or self discovery. I am fortunate to have gotten them for such a deal, but with what I have learned from using them, I would consider then a great buy at full price.

Opponents of the "Warrior-Statesman of the Lakota Sioux" (as the subtitle dubs him) criticized Red Cloud (1822-1909) as duplicitous. In Robert Larson's sympathetic appraisal, Red Cloud's deliberate deceptiveness was part of a delaying tactic to sustain Lakota culture in an increasingly hostile environment. Eventually concluding that the white invaders could not be stopped, the fierce fighter became a wily negotiator who wrung some concessions from the U.S. government as he presided over his people's transition from nomadism to reservation life. It's a sad story, told with sensitive awareness of history's painful ambiguities.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars A exciting adventure.......2002-10-31

The book the Red Cloud is a really good book about the native american period. It talks about the history of one leader, Red Cloud. It talks about his life and his effect on the land and his people. He was a strong and couragous person. He stood up for what he believed in. He was kinda of like the the person in between, that is the person between the government and the tribes. Red Cloud did not favored the separation of people. He believed that we can coexist together. Red Cloud lived a long time for someone back then. This is a good book for educational purposes. It is a great tool for learning about the history of Native Americans. Even though this is an biography, it can still be a great learning experience for all.

4 out of 5 stars For the most part, doesn't avoid the controversy.......2001-05-01

Along with Crazy Horse, Red Cloud is probably one of the best known
Native American leaders, at least by name. He is also probably the
most controversial. Some see him as a statesman and visionary
who, aware that war against the whites had become pointless, negotiated
in the best interests of his people. Others see him as self-serving
and vain, using white insistance on negotiating with "one true
chief" as a means to his own ends.

      For the most part, Larson
weighs in on the side of statesman, but he doesn't fail to show the
other side too. He points out how Red Cloud would often make a point
of a small issue, that would benefit only him, at the expense of a
larger issue that affected his people. One example he uses is when,
on a trip to Washington in 1870, Red Cloud became sullen and withdrawn
until he was assured that his delegation would be given 17 horses to
for the trip from the train to the reservation. However, he largely
ignored the bigger and more important issue, of mining for gold in the
      Black Hills.

Unfortunately, though, on the most controversial
issue, how much Red Cloud had to do with Crazy Horse's death, or at
least plans for his arrest, Larson is disappointingly vague. He does
acknowlege that Red Cloud was probably jealous of the younger leader.
Indeed, in the last chapter he notes that "...his role in this
tragic affair is probably the blackest mark against his name."
(p.302) Unfortunately, though, Larson doesn't cover the incident in
nearly enough detail. He implies that Crazy Horse truly was planning
to go back on the warpath, rather than fight the Nez Perce as
requested by Lieutenant Clark. He also makes no mention of any possible
misinterpretation of Crazy Horse's words by the less than reputable
interpreter Frank Grouard. Larson may have had good reason for
choosing to leave out some of this material. Certainly his list of
sources shows that the book is well-researched. Unfortunately, the
choice by the publisher, not to use footnotes in this particular
series makes it difficult to determine on what Larson bases his
      assumptions.

On the whole, though, the book is well written, and
easy to follow. It is especially valuable for information about Red
Cloud's life before and after the Indian Wars, a period that is not
covered much in any history books. I can definitely recommend this as
a good introduction for those not familiar with the period, or for
those who simply want to know more about the role Red Cloud played in
those important times. However, I would follow it with a good
      biography of Crazy Horse.

4 out of 5 stars Worthy foe for the white man.......1999-11-01

Traditionally, stories of Indian leaders view them as temporarily dangerous nuisances the whites had to deal with during the reasonable and inevitable process of moving the Indians onto reservations. This book is part of a new approach of looking at what an Indian leader tried to achieve for his people and assessing how he went about it and how successful he was in meeting his own goals. There is much detail. Larson has been extremely thorough in his researches, and, though we do not really hear Red Cloud's voice, we respecfully watch him do what he had to do to further his people's best interests. He didn't wear a suit or tie or have an Ivy League degree, but Red Cloud functioned very well indeed in opposing an alien force. Anyone who thinks the earth may one day be invaded from outer space should study Red Cloud. Thank you, Oklahoma University Press.

      4 out of 5 stars Interesting,clever,educational,easy to follow.......1998-11-28

Red Cloud:Warrioir Statesman of the Lakota Souix is a really excellent biography. Larson does a great job of presenting all the informaton in an understandable and captivating way that really makes me want to learn more about Native American history. There is even a map/picture section in the middle of the biography that helps clarify any questions you may have while reading, as all the different battles and tribes might confuse you. Other than that temporary confusion, good job Mr. Larson

      5 out of 5 stars Living Treasure.......2004-10-29

If you are not lucky enough to be able to sit at Ollie's feet and listen to her in person this is the next best thing... the book "sounds" like her... it is written as though she is speaking directly to you.... so it will throw many readers at first until you get used to the voice.... this is as close as you can get to her voice without voice recordings :) This is a wonderful way of speaking that has come about from mixing traditional lakota dialects with the english language to create a new dialect that is truely unique.

The book itself is a treasure of information that gives you a personal perspective of life in this area growing up during a time when this nation was going through major changes. Ollie gives you a vivid account of daily life, life that has all but disappeared, sprinkled with wisdom and facts you won't get out of main stream textbooks or history books. This is a wonderful window into another culture and belief system that you should not miss!

This book is for everyone, from young to old, from curious to students, those who have an interest in history, culture, and their fellow humans... this has something that speaks to everyone and gives you so much more when you are finished with it .... you won't regret this purchase! Donate a copy to your local library or school!

      5 out of 5 stars A Great American Spirit.......2004-02-07

In this wonderful book, Ollie Napesni tells her own story (through the meticulous work of her devoted recorder and editor, Dianna Torson). Born to Lakota parents on the plains of South Dakota in 1917, Ollie straddles and unites two American cultures. Through her, they fuse and participate energetically in the travails and triumphs of the century. What emerges is a great American spirit that comes sailing out of the pages in Ollie's own salty, vivacious, mid-western voice. If you have any interest in American Indian affairs - or even if you don't - you shouldn't miss this book. You won't put it down without a lump in your throat and a smile in your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic Native American Voice.......2003-11-02

Once you get into the syntax of Ms. Napesni's voice, you love it. She is a Lakota speaker and she thinks in Lakota because it is her first language. Highly fluent in English she is able to bring to the reader a sense of being Lakota. The book demonstrates to readers how one must be flexible in order to live in two completely different cultures. The book itself is a joy, easy to hold and easy to read. For fastest service it is best ordered straight from www.trafford.com.

5 out of 5 stars Native Amerian Life:Original,Historical,& Finally, Female........2003-10-31

Reading Ollie Napesni's autobiographical account as a Lakota Sioux Native American was a pure pleasure. Finally we have female insight what it was like growing up in Native America from the early 1920's. Ms. Napesni's account to her editor, transcriber, Dianna Torson, has Ollie's voice in traditional Lakota story telling style. Ollie's voice rings through and we listen to her tell "HerStory". Ms. Torson's ability to edit without loosing the traditional Lakota oratory style is remarkable. Even through a few instances of time wandering, Ollie's story won't let you go. You follow her recollections and look for her bits of wisdom. We learn about honor, dignity, humbleness, family values and strength. We discover women, men and children in Native American communities who were centered in family and Lakota Native American traditions.

Ms Napesni has offered to those of us who yearn for simplicity, commonality, spirituality and peace a world view and a life that attained those qualities.

One walks away after reading this book with a feeling of being a better person and a bit of a longing to pack up your belongings and to rendezvous with family and friends, taking the time to appreciate life and it's giver.

        Book Description

President U.S. Grant's national Peace Policy of 1869 set in motion the South Dakota Missionary movement. The peace plan assigned one religious denomination to each Indian Reservation to Â`Christianize and civilizeÂ' the Indian. When religious groups protested the governmentÂ's policy of exclusion, the limitations of the policy were lifted in 1881. Soon thereafter, many denominations were allowed to establish missions where they wanted. Soon missions, churches, and schools of many different Christian affiliations dotted the reservations, often within a few miles of one another. In Lakota Sioux Missions, over two hundred historical photographs illustrate the story of the mission era, its intended policy of assimilation, the resistance to change, and eventual compromise.

Much has been written about the 1803-1806 Lewis and Clark expedition, but few authors have considered the effect it had on the Native Americans already inhabiting the "uncharted" territory it explored. Basing her story on actual events noted by William Clark, Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve tells a fictional account of an encounter from the point of view of three young Lakota boys. Her Story explores the wariness and misunderstanding each side met and the trouble that ensued. Historical notes and a glossary are included.
