Book Description

Isreal's feasts are infinitely more important than just a series of cultural observances. These feasts are appointed by the Lord, and they are owned by the Lord. He calls them " my feasts." Together they form God's prophetic calendar, outlining the work of history's most important person...Jesus, the Messiah. As such, few themes are more timely or rewarding for God's people today.

The Feasts of the Lord covers all aspects of the biblical feasts...historical background, biblical observance, and prophetic significance. Yet, this book is not just another reference book on the feasts. It is written from the Hebrew Christian viewpoint, helping you to see the feasts through Jewish eyes.

The words of the Savior, His messianic claims, and Bible prophecy will all take on a rich, new relevance for you against the exciting backdrop of The Feasts of the Lord.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Chest of Information.......2007-02-16

The pages are falling out of my copy of "The Feasts of the Lord" simply because of how many times I have referred to it while preparing lessons or sermons. I am almost brought to tears every time I read of the literal meaning of the "afikomen" at Passover. I gave a copy of this book to a Jewish friend who helped me in proofing the manuscript of "Maccabee." Though "The Feasts of the Lord" demonstrates unapologetically the New Testament fulfillment of the Old Testament feasts, the book was well received. A big thank you to the authors.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible book.......2007-02-07

This is one of the most beautiful, high-quality books I own. The illustrations are amazing with rich colors and magnificent details. The writing is understandable and gives wonderful insight into Jewish history. This is an incredibly valuable tool for any serious Bible student and a treasure for any serious book collector.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-Opening.......2007-01-13

This is one of my most treasured books. So wonderfully written, I felt like I was literally attending these feasts. Very eye-opening to end time events.

This is an excellent source and must reading for understanding God"s purposes im mankind's affairs. Further, it increases the understanding for the Christian in his roots and history. It connects all the dots to bridge, with understanding, the Jewish faith and the Christian faith to give clarity to the Christian belief system.

Book Description

It’s the celebration of an era. At a mind-blowing price, this ultimate, beautiful, illuminating, and really groovy look at the 1960s counterculture is rich in illustrations and filled with the history, politics, sayings, and slogans that defined the age. For those who were there, this volume will flash them back. For those who weren’t, they’ll wish they had been.

Sex, drugs, and rock and roll; peace rallies and riots in the ghettos; Flower Power, Black Power, and Gay Power; Mothers of Invention and Women’s Liberation; Woodstock, Monterey Pop, and Altamont. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times: it all depends on whom you ask. But without a doubt the hippies transformed society. Every significant moment of the era comes vibrantly alive once again in psychedelic images, rare portraits of writers and musicians, dynamite poster and album artwork, and photographic records of political events that shook the world. Hundreds of unforgettable quotations come from seminal figures such as Ken Kesey, Timothy Leary, Grace Slick and George Harrison. Proceeding year by year from 1965 to 1971, Hippie gives an unprecedented degree of shape and coherence to an age—that is kaleidoscopically astounding.

Barry Miles was a central figure in the counterculture milieu. He wrote Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now, as well as The Beatles: A Diary; contributed to I Want to Take You Higher, the Rock Music Hall of Fame’s chronicle of psychedelic music. The Sixties is Miles’ own memoir of the decade.

5 out of 5 stars Nice coffee table book.......2007-06-12

That's actually a very nice coffee table book with amazing pictures and good stories. Good for random "excursions" into the era of the hippie movement and the love generation. I also liked a lot the print quality. Overall, strongly recommended if you're looking for a coffee table book. If you are looking for a more detailed narrative, "The Haight-Ashbury: A History", by Charles Perry, might be more appropriate.

5 out of 5 stars Far Out.......2007-06-01

I just received this book at work and quickly went through it, I noticed some reviewers were not that happy about the way it was written, considering the price and wealth of original illustrations and images this is a must have for anyone who is interested in the counterculture, looking at the images alone can give you a feel of a whole era, I loved it

5 out of 5 stars good hippie book.......2007-05-22

This book is great. I loved all the pictures and information. I even got an idea from the book for my wedding! I love the hippie lifestyle!

3 out of 5 stars One flower short of a bouquet.......2007-01-02

Great photos, but not a great read. Still, it's fun. Get it cheap...
Barnes & Noble recently marked it down to $5.

3 out of 5 stars Great look, terrible text.......2006-12-11

I very much wanted to like this book. And I do, for the pictures, for the quotes, and for the book itself, which is nicely sized, has great cover art, and a satisfying heft. However, the writting itself is terrible.

The style of the writting could be generously called journalistic. Miles, the author, is not a writer, and his tone is that of someone dictating a grocery list, and thus the text fails to express any of the excitement and vitality which it describes.

Furthermore, there are numerous factual errors and lapses in editing. For example, San Francisco's big park is Golden Gate Park, not Central Park. To walk from SF's Filmore to Golden Gate Park, you have to walk west, not east (actually, more north-west, but let's not quibble). In terms of editing, there were several mispellings and typos, including the consistant use of quotation marks (") instead of apostropheses ('). Thus "David's" becomes "David"s." This is very sloppy editing. Was this book done on the cheap, or in a great hurry?

However, the book is only $14.95, and the pictures alone are worth the price. However, just don't buy it expecting much in terms of the writting.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-10-01

I bought this book expecting it to be spiritual and some of the statements were, but they were not backed up with anything that relates to how the Indians incorporated those thoughts into THEIR daily lives. I just got an unrelated history lesson. For example, Feb. 10th-"To clothe a man falsley is to distress his spirit..." Then the next information on that page is about a Native Day in American History on "Feb 10th 1763 The French ceded the North Americans territory to England in the Treaty of Paris, ending the French and Indian War (1754-1763)." Now, what do the two have to do with each other? Or at least put something in about how Native Americans dress or something related to the spiritual quote of the day. The format bugged me. There is some good information, but very poorly organized.

5 out of 5 stars A Special Native American Daily Read & Meditation.......2006-11-03

For those of us who take the time to get up extra early, open our front doors, and listen to the birds calling as the sun is rising, this book is so helpful to start your day off just right. The Words of our Grandfathers remind us to live with our hearts and pay attention to the old ways in our every day lives.

The author, Terri Jean, has had the foresight to add in History notes to remind us of what heppened in the past, reminding us of seasonal thoughts, and so much more.

This book is dynamic and meditative. A worthwhile present for someone special who is a Native American.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-06-01

Though the book is designed as a daily meditational, I read through the Red Road Ethics beginning to end. Full of wisdom, but I felt a couple of the quotes were inacurate (paraphrased).

When I bought this book I was waiting something difficult to read for but I was so surprised how wonderful and easy this book is! It gives me lots of hope and joy every morning when I read each day's part! IF you value these Native people's thoughts - this book is MUST to own!

5 out of 5 stars A reminder of how God uses ordinary people for extraordinary purposes.......2007-03-20

I received this book as a gift from my parents last year and I'm about to purchase a couple of copies for friends in my small group from church. This book shows how the rubber meets the road, how everyday men and women throughout history have LIVED their faith.

It's easy to say you believe and to be a believer in a relatively peaceful environment. It's another thing altogether to turn your beliefs into action when faced with adversity, including death. In all of the 365 stories, there is proof that God can use any circumstance for his glory. And it's a reminder that all we need to do is have faith that He can do anything and use anyone.

Following each daily segment is a question or two that's thought-provoking and then a bible verse that brings the point home. The fact that these stories are about real people and real events dating back from before Christ was born to the 1900's shows how timeless God's message is and how it applies to each and every one of us, regardless of circumstance.

5 out of 5 stars The One Year Book of Christian History.......2007-03-10

An eye-opening look into significant historical events in Christianity as a daily devotional. Painstaking detail is researched by the authors, but each day's entry is crisp and concise. The presentations seem generally very fair, but Reformed readers will like this much more than Arminian readers. A few respectful accounts of Roman Catholics are given, but that church does not fare well overall in this selection (unsurprising to this reviewer). Some days are devastatingly moving. Good daily Scripture verses and questions to the reader for further consideration.

5 out of 5 stars The One Year Book of Christian History.......2007-01-10

I gave this book to several friends, of mine, who tell me they are thoroughly enjoying the book, and the information they are gaining. I purchased the book, after having read a daily excerpt, about Christians being discriminated against, in centuries past. The reading seemed quite relevant, in relation to current events, and I thought it would be beneficial to learn more about Christian history.

I recommend it to everyone who wants to further their faith and grow in their knowledge of history.

Book Description

Careful planning, camaraderie, reliable weapons — these were the WWII GI’s necessities. Pinups provided a different kind of support, mentally transporting American soldiers from the perilous front lines into the accommodating arms of gorgeous, nude, or barely clothed women. Featuring art by such legendary pinup masters as Gil Elvgren, Billy DeVorss, Rolf Armstrong, and Zoe Mozert, this colorful collection commemorates the strange blend of innocence and erotica that characterized the 1940s pinup. Louis K. Meisel has gathered over 300 of the era’s most striking images, arranged into six different themes from Nudes to Swimsuit and Seaside to Indian Maidens, Pirates, and Gypsies. Meisel’s introduction expertly examines the idealized settings and dreamy drawings of a uniquely American icon.

4 out of 5 stars A celebratory look at a classic and risqué American art form.......2007-01-11

When someone else mentioned this book was small, they weren't kidding...to give you a frame of reference, the dimensions are slightly less than that of a standard DVD case. I suppose I can't be too critical about this point as Amazon does have the dimensions posted on their site, and I just neglected to notice this when purchasing.

Published by a company called Collectors Press, Jeepers Peepers! A Gallery of American Pin-Up Art is about 175 pages long, and about 160 of those pages feature pin-up art from the 1930s through the 1960s, presenting roughly over 300 tantalizing images divided into seven different categories (the editorial review states six, but I counted seven). The categories included are as follows (in order);

1. Nudes
2. Playful & Sporty
3. Swimsuit & Seaside
4. Exotic
5. Indian maidens, Pirates (yarrgh) & Gypsies
6. Sheer Beauties (lingerie)
7. Glamour

Up front there's a six-page introduction written by Louis K. Meisel, who's apparently `owner and director of one of the largest and oldest contemporary art galleries in the world'. The introduction is very informative as Mr. Meisel certainly seems to know his stuff (unlike me). My favorite quote from this section is as follows;

"There was no problem with political correctness; feminism was decades in the future. The pin-up girl was how girls and women wanted to look and how men and boys wanted them to look."

As far as the images, they're presented cleanly and in a very professional manner. The paper stock is decent and glossy, allowing the images to shine. As I mentioned earlier there's over 300 images crammed into about 160 pages, so sometimes you'll have one, two, or even three prints on a single page. There's also a concerted effort to identify the particular artist, the date, and title of the work (when possible), which is about the only other text in the book beside the aforementioned intro.

A few things I noticed while perusing through the book...

Apparently it wasn't uncommon for alluring women to get their skirts caught on everyday objects, resulting in said garment riding up to reveal that which we're normally not meant to see. One example would be the act of using a ladder to put something (i.e. books) on a shelf. Ladies beware, as not to catch your hem on one of the rungs when you're coming back down (ladders seemed particularly fiendish devices to operate)!

Another interesting phenomena...back in the day, when an attractive woman was walking her dog while her arms burdened with groceries or some such thing, there was the extreme possibility of having the naughty, mischievous pooch tangling its leash about its owners legs, thereby causing the woman's undergarment to fall about her ankles, followed by a gust of wind coming along (perhaps from a passing bus) and popping the poor woman's skirt up just enough to reveal a healthy pair of gams (and perhaps then some).

A variant on this would be a similar woman, arms burdened with whatnot, trying to exit a telephone booth, only to have her skirt get caught in the door! Oh my!

Then, of course, we have the poor woman at the bowling alley...just as she's chucking her ball down the lane her underpants fall down about her ankles, right at the same time her skirt is blown slightly upward by, I suppose, the air pressurized hand dryer located by the ball return. How many pins did she end up knocking down? Who cares?

My favorite section of the book is the Playful & Sporty portion, as it presents various situations as the ones listed above, most with a similar tone, that being of the `oops, look what happened to me!' variety. As if those kinds of things ever happen in real life (maybe they do, but sadly, never in my presence).

I should probably mention this was sort of my introduction into the world of pin-up art, as while I've been aware of its existence, this is the first book I've purchased exclusively devoted to the subject. That being said I'm sure there's better books out there in relation to the material, but in terms of a general and economical introduction I think this worked out well as it covered a number of different themes along with presenting works by a decent number of artists over a healthy period of time. The flipside? The prints presented are often on the `smallish' side, especially those where two or three appear on the same page. All in all the positives outweighed the negatives, and even given that which I know now (with regards to the size), I'd still have bought the book.

5 out of 5 stars A solid diversity.......2006-09-24

JEEPERS PEEPERS! A GALLERY OF AMERICAN PIN-UP ART receives a fine introduction by New York gallery owner Louis K. Meisel, whose gallery specializes in pinup artwork by top artists from the 1930s through the 60s, as it provides a gorgeous set of color pinup illustrations by a wide range of artists. These don't just come from calendars, but are from commercial art, wartime posters, and more, going beyond the usual pinup collection focus to display a solid diversity of models and approaches to the pinup.

3 out of 5 stars Thanks to Brown & Bigelow.......2006-07-17

I think it's only worth buying if you want an inexpensive introduction to the art of the pin-up. There are about two hundred and sixty paintings included but unfortunately they are crammed into a 6.5 inch by 5 page size with many three to a page (sort of large thumbnails) and this is the problem with all of the Collector Press mini books, they are too small to really get the best out of the subject. Other books reprint consumer ads in this small size!

Another slight annoyance with this book is that it concentrates on artists from the twenties to the forties with a few from the fifties, so no Al Moore, Bill Medcalf, Freeman Elliot and no giants of the genre, Vargas or Petty! In fact the artists that are included seem to be mostly the ones that Collector Press have already published books about.

Where would pin-up art be today without the foresight of calendar printer Brown & Bigelow to more or less create the concept and print millions and millions of girlie pictures that could even be used to tell the day and date especially in garages and light industrial units across America. Dozens of pictures in the book are from their calendars. Well done B&B!

Much better I think to search out author Louis Meisel's definitive book 'The Great American Pin-Up'. You even have two to choose from: the chunky coffee table version (ISBN 3822884979) and the less costly reduced size (ISBN 3822817015) both are well designed and printed with over nine hundred pictures by every American artist up to the seventies.

5 out of 5 stars A NOSTALGIC LOOK AT PIN-UP ART .......2006-07-03

Before magazines like Playboy came along the ideal dream woman for men to enjoy was usually provided by a bevy of talented pin-up artists in magazines and calendars. Pin-up art has enjoyed a tremendous resurgence in popularity over the past decade but "Jeepers Peepers" from Collectors Press presents the men...and women...who got it all started back in the 1930's. The book begins with a short history of pin-up art and introduces us to some of the legends of the field such as Rolf Armstrong, Earl Moran, Alberto Vargas, Zoe Mozert, and perhaps the greatest of all, Gil Elvgren. The book presents 176 pages of their stunning art covering various subjects such as nudes, sports, swimsuit, Indian maidens & pirates, exotic, and glamour.

What you get in these pages is really far more interesting than you get in photographs. What stands out especially is the use of color and shadow that you simply don't get in a mere photograph. There is Edward D' Arcona's magnificent 1930's nude redhead lying on a divan by candlelight that is simply breathtaking. And Zoe Mozert (one of the few female pin-up artists) provides "bubbles" with a gorgeous nude blonde playfully blowing bubbles from a pipe.

Perhaps no pin-up artist was more playful than Art Frahm who had a whole series of pin-up that he did that found his female subjects caught, literally with their panties down...around their ankles, usually with several amused men looking on. Much of the work in the Exotic sections comes from the 20's and 30's when American's fascination with places like Egypt and the Orient were at an all-time high and reflected in works like Armstrong's "The Enchantress" showing a striking Egyptian woman dressed only in sheer silks.

The chapter on Glamour truly shows off its women in all their glory, dressed in beautiful gowns and adorned with fabulous jewels and other accessories, all looking like Hollywood starlets out for the big movie premiere. Billy DeVorss has a magnificent piece of a blonde in a dazzling red gown, taking a moments rest after an exhausting evening.

Jeepers Peepers is really a looking glass into decades long past and into the styles and humor of the day. While there is still pin-up art today, sadly that sense of humor and innocence is long lost but still lives on in this great book.

Book Description

New Book bridges Ancient Wisdom with Modern Technology!

Dr. Randall C. Jimenez, a San Jose State University educator, and Richard B. Graeber, an engineering documentation specialist, have collaborated to bring the first Technical Manual for the Aztec Calendar ever produced. The book was created to address a lack of clear, concise information regarding this ancient native artifact and to correct inaccuracies as taught in history classes across the U.S. today. By using concise documentation techniques, over 240 sources were compressed into a 100-page book, which includes 150 technical drawings, 230 word native glossary, timeline and a 12-page bibliography.

This unique book entitled Aztec Calendar Handbook, on the surface appears to be about the Sun Stone, but in reality is about of Native American history. Chapters include; the History of the Aztec Calendar, Native American Time-keeping, Keepers of Time, Founding of Tenochtitlan and the Legend of Quetzalcoatl. It is designed as an accessible authority on the Aztec Calendar and the people that had such a profound effect on the shaping of modern America.

By looking at myths, legends & history with an Aztec's perception of God, this new Manual provides needed answers to many important questions.

Grammatical aside, there is no other treatise on pre-Columbian America and the Aztec Calendar as complete, concise and thought provoking as this one. I didn't notice the grammatical error until the fellow from Tejas spotted it. I was too amazed at having my perception of Native America shattered. After reading many books on the Aztecs, I bought this book and was favorably impressed by the depth, continuity and treatment of the entire subject matter. There is so much information in this book its astounishing. The bibliography contains over 200 sources. Direct eyewitnesses from the 16th century are quoted. The Time-Line is great. I will be referring to this book for years to come.

Butler's Lives of the Saints: New Concise Ed., edited by Paul Burns, ISBN 0-8146-2903-2, Copyright 2003

Consider another book. Despite "Butler's" being in the title, it seems to bear no relation to the Butler's Lives of the Saints published in the 1950s and 1800s.

Defects:
1. There is no index or alphabetical list of saints. If you want to look up a saint by name, you have to scan the list of 366 saints in the table of contents, which is six pages long. An index would have provided quick access.

2. Saints are not listed under their actual commemoration day. Why? Because the saints did not "die on conveniently spaced dates" (page xi). Nothing in the description of the saint alerts you to the date being wrong. To determine the correct day, you have to closely read a paragraph at the beginning of the month.

3. The book does not bear an imprimatur from a bishop or "nihil obstat" showing that it's free from error. To illustrate why this is a problem, one-third of the entry for St. Maria Goretti is not about her; it's a critique of her sainthood and of the Church. Example: in "feminist circles ... Maria has been seen more as a martyr to patriarchal society" (p. 310).

5 out of 5 stars Old heroes to learn about.......2006-07-16

It has been nearly fifty years since I read this book. I had forgotten how much detail Butler placed in his research of the lives of the saints. Although my mind has moved more towards agnosticism, it is of great interest for me to read how the Church appreciated the lives of some of its past members. I am now trying to read of the saints related to that day, but alas my schedule is too busy to read the entire selection.

5 out of 5 stars all 12 volumes.......2006-02-04

This edition of Butler's Lives of the Saints presents its subjects in a vibrant, sober and (as required by the genre) brief way. The books are like the Litany of the Saints invoking these memorable Christians and giving readers a picture of the communion of saints. They came from every time and place. They represent all of human variation. The series does not shy away from presenting weaknesses along with admirable qualities. This clearly comes from the conviction that God's grace does not work only in ideal people, but every variety of person can be a saint.

3 out of 5 stars Butler's Lives of the Saints.......2005-09-08

The rating of 3 stars does not reflect THE BOOK - actually, I have another copy of this book and love it. However, I ordered (I THOUGHT) A LARGE PRINT EDITION. Your presentation on line was very confusing. I requested large print offerings, and, found that not everything that came up for perusal was large print. I made the mistake of selecting what I thought WAS large print only to find, upon receipt, that it was not. I was purchasing this book as a gift for my neighbor who desired a book about the lives of the saints in large print because he is legally blind and cannot read the normal type. For that reason I rated my experience as a 3 because I am disappointed. I AM STILL LOOKING FOR A BOOK ABOUT SAINTS IN LARGE PRINT AND WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME. R. Ford

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, I think it's awful.......2004-07-07

Paul Burns is, according to the book jacket, distinguished only by the fact he has a "first-class degree in modern languages" (whatever that is), and has translated many books about liberation theology.
He systematically attacks all of the greatest Catholic saints, like the Cure d'Ars (an "intransigent moralizer"), saint Joan of Arc (maybe she didn't exist!), saint Rose of Lima (she had mental problems), all missionaries ("cultural imperialists!"), etc. Cheers! (www.inquisition.ca)

Book Description

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the LP chart, this superb and visually awesome book brings you the very best rock, pop, rap, reggae, soul, and punk album covers ever created.

At a time when listeners increasingly download or upload songs, creating personal playlists on MP3 players and I-Pods, the art of packaging music seems to be fading away. But for the past 50 years, musicians have released their work inside brilliantly-designed packages that made an important statement about their music and style. Look at the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Band, for example--just one of the 500 memorable images in this amazing collection, all chosen by a panel of 50 experts and each accompanied by enlightening commentary. Among the choices: the brilliantly psychedelic and way-out art from the Rolling Stones' Their Satanic Majesties Request; Peter Tosh's fiery cover for Bush Doctor; and the somewhat demented-looking prom queen on Hole's Live Through This album. From rock to pop, jazz to blues, these are all artistically, stylistically, and culturally significant in their own way, and will undoubtedly spark a debate with fans around the world.

1 out of 5 stars why aren't the art directors listed in the index?????.......2007-03-31

My husband, John Berg, was the art director of many of the covers in this book. I looked in the index to find where they were and I was amazed that a book on the subject of the album COVERS would not have a listing for the people who created the album covers. Listing the albums by recording artist and listing by album name is fine but the subject of the book is the ART on the covers, and yet the art directors, while buried in the text under the pictures of the individual album covers within the body of the book, are not singled out in an index. A person researching the work of John Berg, or Bob Defrin or Paula Scher would have to KNOW the album title or the band in order to see the work. That's ok for a book about the bands, or the music or even the decade, but if it's about the cover art lets have it BE about the cover art- there should have been an index for the ART PEOPLE: the illustrators, the photographers and the art directors...so for someone interested in who did the covers rather than just what they look like this is not the best book, no matter how well it's printed.

5 out of 5 stars For Fun or the Music Enthusiast.......2007-01-29

I received this book for the holidays and wound up reading it cover to cover in 3 hours. The book does a great job of explaining the evolution of the album cover. It also gives great background into what the artist's was trying to portray with the cover. The book covers all genres, as well as, explains covers that were giving social commentary to covers that are just plain silly. Great purchase for anyone that loves not only the music but everything that goes into it.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Book, brings back the memories.......2007-01-21

If I had known, this would have been the last gift my husband opened. We could not get him away from this book on Christmas morning. It was fun to see him sit with our daughter and tell her about which titles he had and some of his memories to go along with the album covers. Neat book!

1 out of 5 stars Some mistake: perheaps most banal covers of all time?.......2006-12-09

I am a record collector with more than 30 years of addiction.
I enjoyed enormously Michael Ochs "1000 Record Covers" issued by Taschen in 1994. And afterwords I bought and reasonably enjoyed other record cover reference books such as One Hundred Album Covers by Storm Thorgerson & Aubrey Powell issued by DK and others.
Well learning about such a luxury edition as what this one seemed at a first glance, I thougt that I shall have a valuable addition to my library...
but I was badly mistaken.
This is the worst collection of "best" covers I ever came accross in my life.
The Authors begin with the Fiftes: Frank Sinatra's banalities that will not catch the eye even of a Sinatra's dedicated fan. Then come other albums full of b/w graffities. A whole page is dedicated to the White Album with a ridiculously high issue number (White Album means logically a white page). Just for a laugh - there is another completely red page with another "highly conceptual" cover, that would merit only a verbal mentioning. The only passable covers in the book are either in bad printing quality or poor(creased and soiled) cover quality. Apart from that these staple famous cover art pictures are so banal that a 10-years old child is already tired of looking at them.
I wonder why the Authors made such an expensive and useless book.
Well I understand that the tastes differ, but ... not to this point.
My advice to any serious collector and cover art fetishist: leave this book to the Remainders.
It is a pity there are no 0 stars in this scale, but I should perheaps leave 1 star because the Authors are at least interested in cover art: good for them.

4 out of 5 stars Great converstion piece.......2006-07-30

Fascinating read, helped answer a lot of questions as to who or where or what.
The only downside - if you can call it that, is that we were not familiar with a lot of the album covers, but if
only this book and Michael Ochs's 1000 Album Covers combined their information and published a book together - that would be the ultimate. But no regrets, I have them both and they make great coffee table books.

Book Description

This is absolutely the best fighter pilot memoir of World War II. Pierre Closterman was a Free French fighter ace and his account of the air war over Britain and France has justly become famous. It contains everything one could wish for: wonderfully observed descriptions of wartime Britain, frighteningly evocative stories of in-the-cockpit action, an amazing cast of characters, and all the drama and bravery of a man fighting a desperate war thousands of feet above the ground. An undeniable classic and a true page-turner.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars You will smell the cordite.......2007-07-10

Clostermann's account of the air war in Europe is one of the best I've ever read -- almost as good as Wellum's "First Light." Clostermann's writing is vibrant, the level of detail is astounding, and his ability to put you "in the cockpit" during those harrowing days is really unparalleled. Highly recommended.

My only complaint, and what robbed the book of a fifth star in my humble opinion, is that Clostermann's transparent anti-American agenda is pursued at every turn, without any perspective or sense of balance. For example (a) his (arguably fair) criticism of French civilian deaths at the hands of American bombers is devoid of any similar reference to Bomber Command's exploits in the intentional area bombing of German civilians; (b) friendly fire events actually appear at every turn in his narrative, but the Americans are singled out for special criticism on that point, for no apparent reason other than bias; and (c) Clostermann claims at one point, without any evidentiary basis whatsoever, that a directive about "proper" targets in the theater was ignored only by the Americans.

Indeed, at times one detects Clostermann's generic distaste even for some of the Brits in the RAF! I was left wondering whether Clostermann was "projecting" in an effort to avoid discussion of the frankly shameful conduct of so many Frenchmen during the war.

But all that is, in the end, a small bone to pick. Certainly Clostermann himself was not among the group of disgraced Frenchmen. His devotion to duty, skill, and courage -- characteristics shared by many of the Free French pilots -- can't be doubted. Moreover, his frank discussions of his own fear, and the effects on his flying, give this narrative an authentic feel. This is a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Just buy this book.......2006-09-24

Along with Heinz Knocke's 'I Flew for the Fuhrer' an absolutely outstanding aviation read. Like others here the original edition I had inherited was almost worn thin. I was delighted to read the 'extra bits' as I could probably almost recite the old one! Particularly poignant were the comments regarding Tempests being attacked by US fighters and the description of the 262's arriving to surrender on Clostermann's airfield in 1945. This book simply cannot be recommended enough.

PS:I would suggest along with 'I Flew for the Fuhrer' that an excellent companion read is Eric Brown's 'Wings of the Luftwaffe' - an RAF technical pilot who offers unbiased opinions on Luftwaffe aircraft.

PPS: Regarding the -D9/Ta152 comments above. I believe old Clo-Clo is technically correct!

5 out of 5 stars Still Riveting After All These Years.......2006-04-15

.

Pierre Closterman died on March 22, 2006. News of his death prompted me to go back to my father's bookcase and pull out 'The Big Show'. It was just as exhilarating a read as I remmeber as a kid in the 70's

Closterman uses wondefully evocative language in decscribing events in the air over Europe in WWII. Full of action and a 'vital elan' that was unfortunately in short supply among Frenchmen in the 30's and 40's. Some drawbacks to the book are an uneccessary snobbish attitude towards the Americans and Brits as well as minimizing of some of his own failures (the most critical being the lack of air discipline that led him to fail to support his wingman, Mouchette, that led to his companion's death). But such is the nature of autobiographies.

But well worth the hours spent to read this gripping account of one man's war.

5 out of 5 stars The finest fighter pilot narrative of World War Two.......2005-10-17

What a pleasure to have a new edition of this marvelously evocative book available! This is the first time that it has been presented in its entirety and the additions only increase the book's value as a window into the world of the combat aviator.

The book was originally written shortly after the war and as a result there is an immediacy about it that is, at times, electrifying. It was an international best seller and deservedly so, highlighting the career of a fighter pilot who started flying combat on Spitfires and ended up in Tempests. For many years it was the only book that dealt with combat action in the Tempest, a beautiful and powerful warplane introduced late in the war to combat the V1 and the new German jets. The original edition has some minor errors in it, but the descriptions of the missions were just outstanding! The swirl of the dogfights, the dives into flak, dealing with zero visibility weather, the victories recounted in detail, the losses of friends recalled with a warrior's stoicism, this fine book set a standard that has only been approached by other works.

As V. M. Yeates WINGED VICTORY was the finest First World War fighter pilot book, THE BIG SHOW is the second war's. Yeates told his story as a novel based on his experiences as a Sopwith Camel pilot on the Western Front, but the latter book, while reading like a novel, has the extra advantage of being true.

Pierre Clostermann wrote two other books, but his first book was his finest and cannot be recommended highly enough. To read it is to find in its pages what it was like for young men to fly and fight in the hostile skies of Europe in what has come to be known as "the good war."

3 out of 5 stars Marvellous written, but full of strange "facts"..........2004-11-13

This book is a page turner. It's amazingly exciting and you will feel like you're into the cockpit of Spitfires and, later, Tempests. But some strong issues arise...

First of all, the number of victories by Clostermann. He says he had 33. RAF official claims put him wuth "only" eleven! A great, very GREAT discrepancy;

Second, a lot of facts are simply untrue. He says, about Walter Nowotny's death, that the German ace was a long foe of him. Goosh, ALL of Nowotny's victories were obtained on the Eastern Front, save on or two pairs, while he was flying an experimental Me-262 unit in Western Europe!

Anyway, it's very good book.

Hang in there-it's almost over!

Much of the nation has been counting the days since the first inauguration of the president who said, "I'm the commander-see, I don't need to explain-I do not need to explain why I say things. That's the interesting thing about being president."

Yes, there is hope-and now you can count down the days while enjoying:

the best of Bush bloopers and blunders

the indictments, scandals, embarrassments and audacity of the president's advisors, admirers (think Harriet), cronies, appointees (see "cronies") and strange bedfellows

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars What a bunch of bullcrap.......2007-08-03

Only an immature liberal would buy this. Who counts down two full years of their lives just so one president will finally get out of office? Here's a tip for the people that do: go get a life. Bush may not make a good president, but sitting here complaining doesn't do any good. Move on with your own lives and just hope that the next president is better. If he isn't, then what are you going to do about it? Just live with it and stop your whining.

5 out of 5 stars Great Calendar.......2007-06-23

This calendar is nothing more than your typical liberal sour grapes. Keep it up guys. I like it as it helps our cause. Maybe one of these days the libs will grow up and become educated on the facts of this country and what is really happening.

5 out of 5 stars I Can't Wait.......2007-02-20

Well, it's 2007, and the next Presidental election is coming up in less than two years. And what is a better way to bring it all in than a countdown calendar? True, it will take some time to get this nutjob out of office, but waiting will be twice the fun with this calendar. I highly recommend for people who truly love their country. Now I'm just worried about who our next President will be...

1 out of 5 stars not happy.......2007-02-07

I am very unhappy that I ordered a 2007 calendar on Jan. 4, and have been notified - AGAIN - that its shipment has been "delayed". I cancelled my order today. I will have to reconsider using Amazon for "time sensitive" purchases.
