Book Description
Few artists have explored genres and techniques with such curiosity and pleasure as Henri Matisse, whose fascination with the relationship between interior and exterior forms occupied him throughout his career. In the early 1950s, he chose to dedicate his last years to the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence and the nursery school in his hometown of Le Cateau-Cambrésis, both in the South of France. These sites represent a culmination of all Matisse's earlier visual and spatial explorations.
This book sheds new light on the development of Matisse's oeuvre, which spans some 60 years. Lavishly illustrated with almost 400 images, this deluxe volume includes beautiful reproductions of the artist's most famous paintings paired with lesser-known documents and photographs culled from the archives of his estate. The authors also gathered first-hand accounts related by numerous participants in the Vence and Le Cateau projects. The result is a fascinating, almost day-to-day look at Matisse's process as he created these works, and an intimate portrait of both the artist and the man. AUTHOR BIO: The late René Percheron was head of the museum of national antique art in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, and a lecturer on the history of art and photography. Christian Brouder is a researcher at CNRS, the national organization for scientific research in Paris.

Offering an intimate portrait of the artist in work and life.......2005-01-04
Primarily known for his luminous color paintings, the French artist Henri Matisse was also involved in designing stunningly beautiful stained glass windows and even ventured into the realm of architecture as well. Matisse: From Color To Architecture is a seminal work by Rene Percheron and Christian Brouder and the first to focus on these lesser known endeavors by one of France's most renowned painters. Offering an intimate portrait of the artist in work and life with a focus upon Matisse's work in his final years on the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence and the nursery school in his hometown of Le Cateayu-Cambresis (both of these buildings are located in the south of France), this 384 page compendium is enhanced with 396 illustrations (247 of which are in full color) and includes beautiful reproductions of Matisse's most famous paintings drawn from the collections of Centre Georges Pompidou, the Hermitage Museum, the Barnes Foundation, and the National Gallery of Art. These works are paired with documents and photographs culled from the archives of the Matisse estate. Included are first-hand accounts from the participants in the Vence and Le Cateau projects. Matisse: From Color To Architecture is an original and recommended contribution to personal, professional, academic, and community library Art History and Architectural Studies collections.

Suggested Reading For All African Americans.......2007-08-23
The Isis Papers is an excellent book and should be required reading for all conscious Black African Americans. This book answers many questions which have been nagging at me for years. I will recommend it to all my friends and family members.
This is a book that will be kept in your personal book shelf.
Pseudo-Afrocentrism, For This Book Is..........2007-05-02
...sexist: "single parent (female-headed) households (...) [are] very disturbing individual- and group-destructive pathological forms of behavior". Submitting females would have to care for kids and home. The women's liberation would be largely homosexual, turn males into weakened homosexuals and react hysterical to rape. "the so-called strong Black female" would be an epidemic of a Black social-pathological syndrome. In reality, in many parts of Africa, we live(d) in matriarchal societies.
...erotist: Melanin envy - "Through anal intercourse, the self-debasing white male may fantasize that he can produce a product of color, (...) fecal matter." Whites would dislike to procreate albinism and turn homosexual. People-destructive Black homosexuality would have to get treated and prevented. In reality, in pre-colonial Africa we knew of the most various alternative concepts: Boy-Wives and Female Husbands: Studies of African Homosexualities.
...anti-semitic: Sigmund Freud and Karl Marx (1818-83) would be wrong on ANYTHING. Because they are Jews. Otherwise they would have been able to prevent the holocaust. Jews reproduced with Whites, but they couldn't hide their Black origin: It would be their own fault. That would be, why they are God's chosen people: As a bad example to be punished.
...reversed racist: Whites would be "albinos", abnormal genetic defective mutants. ALL Whites would suffer from an INFERIORITY complex and plan to survive as a "race" by killing all "coloreds". "the hippies and yippies, by allowing dirt to accumulate on themselves (...) are adding color to their skins".
...racist: "albinos" are excluded from Blacks, having been chased away once. Whites/albinos are only reacting to that to survive. "[Some "abnormally short" TV actors] are NON-WHITE MALES, with constitutional and/or genetic deficiencies." Her advice: Stop being homosexual! Have no children before 35! Married couples, sex no more than twice a week! Do not let wives earn more than husbands! In reality: It is NOT Black people's behavior that excuses or causes racism. It is beyond their control. It is the white supremacists who have to change.
...eugenic: Sterilization of Blacks would be valid, if Blacks would all be that "genetically defective" as these small actors. "counter the thrust of the Black male as female, clown, infant, buffoon, transvestite, homosexual. Black males who are unwilling to fight for their manhood are thereby indicating that they debase Black manhood (...). These males do not deserve the privilege of procreating themselves, and this should be enforced".
...ageist: "Blacks, as a people, must understand that Black child-parenting [by youths and young adults] under stress of racism is GROUP-DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR, and as such it cannot be condoned by the people; it must be controlled." Youths may be conditioned to stay children longer in mind (in Western culture). Disregarding extremes, teenagers become responsible adults in (traditional) Africa much earlier. It is a Western mis-teaching that first loves automatically fail. Teenage rebellion against parents isn't universal.
...dictatorial: "correct behavior for Black people (...) is to prevent, BY ALL POSSIBLE MEANS, children from giving birth to, OR PARENTING, children." "We should take it upon ourselves to establish a five-year-plan [!] for the TOTAL ELIMINATION of Black child-parenting, so that by the year 1984 [!] there will be NO Black child-parents in the U.S." (my emphasis).
...militaristic/genocidal: "One method I have been using with all Black male patients (...) is to have them relax and envision themselves approaching, in actual combat, the collective of white males and females (without apology or giving up in the crunch). (...) Black women must learn to rear sons who will learn from the cradle that their major function as men is (...) to defend, protect and support their people (in that order), even should death be the consequence". "It will require a (...) counter war effort (...) to neutralize, by every means at their disposal, this war of racist injustice. (...) Black manhood (...) means WARRIOR or SOLDIER against white supremacy, embracing everything that the words warrior or soldier imply. Those who do not wish to be warriors or soldiers should not procreate themselves".
This book discredits any decoding of symbols. It is a Rorschach inkblot test, the author herself is taking. It is NOT the common association to see a box ring as a white vagina or a Christmas tree as a Black phallus with dozens of "colored" men's testicles and white melting phalli hanging on it. (In reality a pyramid symbol.) E.g. the Eiffel Tower may look like a phallus. But standing directly beneath it, looking upwards, it resembles a vagina. It never occurs to the Dr. that pucks are black, so that they can be spotted on ice.
No "control groups": The ancient Greeks and Romans didn't know any racism against Blacks (but against north European Whites), bringing her entire theory down. She's "originating" human occurrances like homosexuality differently based on skin color.
Never could Black "albinos" and Whites pass as one another. In the most intense albinism - which happens anywhere -, NO melanin is produceable, i.e. in hair, skin (no tanning), eyes (appearing red). (Recessive) Albinism is either-or, i.e. if Whites were albinos, the kids with non-albino Blacks would look black and not halfway between. The kids of an albino Black and a non-albino White will look (lighter) Black, not white.
"High Heels" are not inherently female: All shoes had high heels, when initially imported from the Arabs. Judges wear black robes not to camouflage as Black, but because they grieved the death of their queen and forgot to change back. If you shave any apes, they will not expose black, but white skin. I could go on for pages. It's not about sloppy research. Do not blind yourself by passionate anti-racist statements. In white debate class culture we swallow anything, when we like the (supposed) major sentiment.
The book interprets symbols wrongly AT THE COST of Afrocentrist knowledge: The Washington, D.C. obelisk isn't a white phallus symbol, but a resemblance of (Black) Egyptian architecture like most of the city's monuments/government buildings and the pyramid on the dollar bills. (Read AFRICAN ORIGINS OF FREEMASONRY: Treatise of the Ancient Grand Lodge of Khamet.) The Christian cross isn't a symbol for a castrated Black man's genitalia to be used as a dildo, but derived from the Egyptian sign of life, the nkwa/ankh.
For a worthy version of the Dr.'s pseudo-work, read Putting It All Together: World Conquest, Global Genocide and African Liberation published in the same year. To psycho-analyse racists read Frantz Fanon, e.g. Black Skin, White Masks. For Afrocentrist psychology read Na'im Akbar's booklets.
Ignorance as a political philosophy.......2007-02-02
This book is racist fantasy disguised as science. It didn't bother me too much because there will always be a lunatic fringe; after all, some people really do believe in flying saucers.
What I really found depressing was the number of people in the amazon feedback that thought highly of the book. I didn't realize there were that many people out there that are so filled with bitterness that they'll grasp onto anything to justify it.
My recommendation is for everyone to condemn this book, along with all white/black racist screeds.
Unlocking The Hidden Doors Of Racism.......2007-02-01
The book is a collection of essays written by Dr. Frances Cress Welsing from 1970-1988. Originally published in 1991, the current edition has a January 2005 afterward from Dr. Cress Welsing, a behavioral scientist and practicing psychiatrist.
Her writings concern her holistic theory on white suupremacy, The Cress Theory of Color-Confrontation and Racism. You must read the initial essay carefully and with an open mind to Dr. Cress Welsing's approach on the subject, or you will get bogged down with incorrect conclusions to her writings.
The basis of her theory is the drive of racism/white supremacy for genetic survival due to a lack of melanin in the skin pigmentation of white or color-deficient Europeans.
She then applies the theory to such topics as war, sports, currency and politics. My only disappointment is Dr. Cress Welsing's use of the same quotes from a variety of sources in papers that were published years apart.
Ultimately, there is a real answer to centuries of race wars perpetrated on people of color by whites. In a long sentence in the 2005 afterward, Dr. Cress Welsing says it all:
"Racism (white supremacy) is the local and global power system and dynamic, structured and maintained by persons who classify themselves as white, whether consciously or subconsciouly determined; which consists of patterns of perception, logic, symbol formation, thought, speech, action and emotional response, as conducted simultaneously in all areas of people activity (economics, education, entertainment, labor, law, politics, religion, sex and war); for the ultimate purpose of white genetic survival and to prevent white genetic annihilation on planet Earth - a planet upon which the vast and overwhelming majority of people are classified as nonwhite (black, brown, red and yellow) by white skinned people, and all of the nonwhite people are genetically dominant (in terms of skin colloration) compared to the genetic recessive white skin people."
The Isis Papers is a vital exploration into the genesis - and genetics - of hate. It is a highly compelling read.
"If you do not understand White Supremacy (Racism), what it is and how it works, everything else...will only confuse you.".......2007-01-18
This is the first statement that comes to mind as I read through most of these reviews placed about this book. In addition to understanding the white supremacy system, one must also understand and analyze the history of European's from pre-history to the present, especially regarding their social relationships to their own people as well as foreign populations, which Dr. Welsing does quite explicitly in this text.
In response to the brother who posted the last comment, while there may or may not be a gene that is indicative of a particular race (i.e. genes that determine race vs. genes that determine eye or skin color), Dr.Welsing's inclusion of genetics in her theory of color confrontation is ONLY used to explain the lack of melanin producing skin among the white population, which does in fact tie into the genetics of skin pigmentation (skin color IS determined by one's genetic makeup), you're example of a white and black person's genetic commonality being more similar than two black persons genetic commonality is completely devious of Welsing's use of genetics in her book.
When she refers to blacks and non-whites as "genetically superior to white people" in her theory of color confrontation, she is strictly referring to the significant absence of melanin and skin pigmentation in white people, compared to the vast majority of the hue-man populous, who in fact have varying levels of skin pigmentation from yellow (e.g.Asian) to very dark/black (e.g.African).
Also in regards to your comment regarding the impossibility of eliminating the white race through intensive cross-breeding, I think you should re-read the section of the text where Dr.Welsing explains that white skin pigmentation is a form of albinism which in turn explains the reasoning behind Dr.Welsing's conclusion that white skin is in fact a "genetically recessive trait" considering the fact that at least 70% of the world's people are born with substantial amounts of melanin, even through cross-breeding with whites, therefore logically if enough breeding occurs amongst peoples who possess melanin (same race or cross race breeding) and are naturally born with skin pigmentation, then those who are genetically recessive/inferior will be eventually be wiped out (think Darwin's survival of the fittest and natural selection), and because of this REAL possibility, is the reasoning behind white supremacy (ensuring white genetic survival). Read the book again (if you really read it in the first place) and I guarantee your reasoning will change.
As for my recommendation, this book is an absolute must read, period!
Peace brothers and sisters!

Gardening.......2005-08-25
Provides lots of interesting gardening information if you are planting only trees and shrubs. Book does not detail anything for vegetable gardeners. Title should be changed to include the word "Forestry" rather than the broad term 'gardening".
Very helpful handbook.......2005-02-07
This is a great reference for those gardening in shade. It is organized in a logical format and can be easily used. The photos are nice and the information helpful as plants are considered for a shade garden. While it may not be adequate for those gardening in the deep south, it is very well suited to zones 5,6, and 7.
A must have.......2002-06-22
This wonderful little book (thick, but only 4.27" wide) is an absolute necessity for anyone who wishes to do some gardening in a shady area. In fact, this book is really three books rolled into one. The first section looks at shade and shade gardening, it is straightforward and highly informative. The second section is entitled The Color Plates, and gives a long list of shade-loving plants, including a very nice color picture, and a highly informative description. The third section goes hand-in-hand with the second, and gives more in-depth information.
This book is really great, a must have for those of us who wish to do some gardening in a shady area. I highly recommend this book to all gardeners!
Great idea book with pictures of shade lovers.......2001-03-22
The Taylor's Guides are very reliable sources for gardening information and great pictures, and the Shade Gardening Guide is one of the best. Shade gardening is difficult for many reasons. There are not that many very showy flowers for seasons other than Spring, and there are many types of shade. The descriptions are very specific and helpful: light shade, dappled shade, "the more shade, the less moisture is needed," and so on. The soil and shade descriptions for each plant are excellent and detailed.
Although the plants are listed alphabetically for the cultural requirements, the pictures are listed by groups: trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, summer bulbs, ground covers, vines, grasses, and ferns. I would recommend that people using the book for plant selection read the "Encyclopedia of Plants" part as well as the brief but good descriptions with the color pictures.
Keep in mind too that the flowering times are primarily for New England (zone 5). Furthur South you may get earlier and more flowers. For example, Ceratostigma is listed as an Autumn bloomer, while in PA, it blooms from July through October. So you get more than the book suggests. Not bad. Anyone with shade should experiment with the plants in this book. As a gardening professional, I see so many great and underused plants listed and described in this book.
Not a good resource for Southern gardeners.......2000-09-09
Having recently purchased a condo in Houston with a north-facing porch, I eagerly awaited delivery of this book. However, I was quickly disappointed. This book should be titled "Shade Gardening in the North," since virtually all of the plants listed are for Zones 5 and lower...not much help for my Zone 9 garden. It did contain a couple of pages of information for shade gardening in the South (which they consider to be North Carolina!), but I was really looking for specific information on the types of shade plants I could plant here. This would have been a great book if I lived in Ohio, but not so good for us Texans.

Artists have long been attracted to Provence for the quality of the light and for the dramatic color; now Colors of Provence demonstrates just what Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and others found there. Divided into chapters entitled "Red," "Orange," "Yellow," "Green," "Blue," and "White, Black, & Gray," the book is a feast of photographs celebrating the vermillion walls of a small French village, the shades of green in a Provençal herb garden, the cerulean blue of lavender spindles. In and around these luscious photos Michel Biehn weaves a net of words describing the culture and customs of Provence, with a few recipes thrown in for good measure. The Colors of Provence is a book made for dreaming over, ideal for those who have seen Provence for themselves, and those who hope to one day.
Book Description
Under the bright Provencal sun, the colors of earth, stone, trees, fruits, and flowers give this region its unique character and beautyâfrom the deep purple of lavender fields to the radiant yellow of sunflowers, and from the bright red of vine-ripened tomatoes to the earthy blackness of fresh truffles, the essential elements of Provence are unfolded chapter by chapter and color by color. Ochre bricks and roof tiles are set against ripe red cherries, while glistening clementines share the orange hues of Mediterranean coral. Yellow tints the popular pastis liqueur and the zucchini blossoms used in the local cuisine. Green recalls the traditional garden pottery while blue reflects the fishing boats and white symbolizes the region's famous cotton boutis bed coverings. An insider's guide includes the best addresses for fabrics, ceramics, antiques, and embroidery, sources for gourmet delicacies, and recipes for uniquely Provencal dining experiences. This book is a visually evocative and essential reference on this unique corner of the world.
Customer Reviews:
Local Color.......2001-03-22
Michel Biehn records in loving and sensuous detail the customs and culture of his native Provence, using color as an ingenious organizing theme. The book goes far beyond the cliched lavender. It reveals the purples that fill Provencal gardens at Easter: lilac, iris and wisteria; the deep indigo that dyed the "jute de Nimes" exported to the United States as "denim" (de Nimes) by Levi Strauss; the hot saffron that flavors bouillabaisse; the orange coral marketed at Marseille; the white-on-white boutis embroidery on quilts and linens for the traditional trousseau; the red stone villages rising from the red earth; the yellow of sunflowers, straw hats and bright silk petticoats. Biehn's particular interest, and expertise, in traditional Provencal fabrics and costumes provides a logical palette on which to juxtapose these dramatic colors. Filled with memories, history, folklore, poetry, garden wisdom and mouthwatering recipes, The Colors of Provence is illustrated with ravishing color photos of Provencal landscapes, homes and objects.
This book has very much enriched our journeys in Provence and prodded our memories when we reminisce about them. Michel Biehn's idiosyncratic list of his favorite places to visit in Provence has led us to wonderful restaurants, shops, tile works, fabric stores and museums. We found it a valuable resource for understanding the significance of artifacts in village museums in Provence, and especially the collections of the extraordinary Provencal folk museum - the Musee Arlaten - that poet Frederic Mistral established in Arles with his Nobel prize money. A lovely and lively book perfect for planning a journey to Provence or dreaming about one.
Gorgeous photos, magnificent colors!.......1999-08-20
I was given this book as a gift upon returning from a trip to France, and this more than any of my travel photos will remind me of and make me yearn to be back in Provence. Very beautiful!

Book Description
“My face is black is true but its not my fault but I love my name and my honest in dealing with my fellow man.”
~Callie House (1899)
In her groundbreaking new book, My Face Is Black Is True, historian Mary Frances Berry resurrects the forgotten life of Callie House (1861-1928), ex-slave, widowed Nashville washerwoman and mother of five who, seventy years before the civil rights movement, headed a demand for ex-slave reparations.
House was born into slavery in 1861 and sought African-American pensions based on those offered Union soldiers. In a brilliant and daring move, House targeted $68 million in taxes on seized rebel cotton (over $1.2 billion in 2005 dollars) and demanded it as repayment for centuries of unpaid labor.
Dr. Berry tells how the Justice Department, persuaded by the postmaster general, banned the activities of Callie House’s town organizers, violated her constitutional rights to assembly and to petition Congress, and falsely accused her of mail fraud; the federal officials had the post office open the mail of almost all African-Americans, denying delivery on the smallest pretext. Berry shows how African-American newspapers, most of which preached meekness toward whites, systematically ignored or derided Mrs. House’s movement, which was essentially a poor person’s movement. Despite being denied mail service and support from the African-American establishment of the day, Mrs. House’s Ex-Slave Association flourished until she was imprisoned by the Justice Department for violating the postal laws of the United States; suddenly deprived of her spirit, leadership and ferocity, the first national grassroots African-American movement fell apart.
Callie House, so long forgotten that her grave has been lost, emerges as a courageous pioneering activist, a forerunner of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. My Face Is Black Is True is a fascinating book of original scholarship that reclaims a magnificent heroine.
Customer Reviews:
The Brilliance of this Historiography.......2007-07-06
Berry's brilliance as a scholar is exhibited in this text. She not only introduces the heroine Callie House, as a significant revolutionary who served jailed time for her leadership in this reparations movement, Berry uses House's story as a foundation to report how former enslaved Africans were mistreated systematically. Through use of a plethora of the state of Tennessee records, scholarly materials and various other documents, Dr. Berry introduces the first reparations movement to the reader.
It was often painful to read how former enslaved persons were treated as freedpersons, since all 8 of my great-grandparents were born between the 1870s to 1890. Knowing that they were children when their parents were so sorely abused was a very vivid and poignant point.
Dr. Berry is to be commended for creating this historiography that not only revealed House's story, it showed how callous the federal government was toward Black people during Reconstruction, and that this callousness trickled to the vicissitudes of everyday life and toil, from healthcare, employment, shelter, and a quality of life that all people deserve to have. Five starts to the senior scholar! - Colita Nichols Fairfax
PRIDE.......2007-01-03
This book really gives one PRIDE in knowing that people exsisted like CALLI HOUSE. Whatever ones ethicity, this is a book which should be read by all and the educational system should make this be a requiremnet. The population must be told and ugly story of what SLAVERY was and still is in the HYPOCRITICAL united staes.
Good unknown history.......2007-01-03
As a historian and lover of obscure history in particular, I have to give Miss Berry (who I met in 1999 at a historian's conference in Toronto and found to be an excellent conversationalist) high marks for the untold story of Callie House.
Callie House tried to form an organization to encourage the government to grant living ex-slaves (this was in the early 20th century when many were still alive). She tried to do this with many strikes against her, facing racism, sexism, and classism (she did not have much formal education). Unfortuantely, government harrassment tried to destroy her movement.
As mentioned, little is documented about Miss House's personal life, but being a Tennesseean like Miss House, Miss Berry does a good job in using her knowledge of the area and historical documents to fill in the holes.
However, in the last chapter Miss Berry links Miss House's movement to the modern day reparations movement. One can argue that there is a considerable stretch between the noble effort of a woman to get deserved pensions for elderly ex-slaves and the modern snowball's chance in hell Quioxtic endeavor to get reperations for the descendants of long-dead slaves, but Miss Berry tries to put a good face on the modern movement. She notes the 2002 reparations march, forgetting to mention that it was very poorly attended and almost universally dismissed for its outlandish and crackpot speeches and states that the reparations movement is mostly supported by the poor black masses (I have to disagree- in my experience it has usually been supported by a segment of black nationalists with some high school or college education).
But that's another story, I'll admit. In either case, regardless of your opinions of the current debate, this is a VERY good and interesting read.
Another Racial Alibi Eliminated.......2006-05-19
Since the Civil Rights Movement it seems most "Whites" and amazingly even some "Blacks" have bought the argument that slavery and its legacy were so long ago that no living African-American could rightfully claim being a victim of it.
This book shows that argument as being just another shameless attempt to avoid owning up to our nation's original sin. The fact that "White" leaders right after the Civil War used other equally specious rationales to avoid paying the piper for their unconscionable crime is telling. Ms. Berry's book should definitely be taught in every school in our guilty nation. And broadcast on every so-called news show. I'll hold my breath until Hollywood decides to make the movie.
"My Face Is Black Is True" is a must-read for any American who considers themselves educated.
Should be required reading for American History classes.......2006-03-17
This wellwritten and extensively researched book reveals not only the drive and persistence of post-Civil War African Americans in seeking reparations for ex-slaves and war veterans, but what can be accomplished with little more than a basic ability to read and write and a talent for organizing and motivating one's colleagues. Callie House is truly an American heroine and her efforts to help black citizens obtain what they richly deserved from the U.S. government, despite obstacles which would have made a lesser person roll over, should be recognized and remembered.

fact or fiction.......2007-07-05
Some say this isnt true, after reading it seems that some is fiction. Especially extensive quotes years after the events from someone who coulnt read or write at the time the events occured and would have no way of recording them for future use. Somewhat drawn out. Keep looking there may be something better out there on the subject.
Excellent Book, and very moving........2007-04-01
This book is one of those books that have quite an affect on you. By the time I was done I had a bit more of knowledege of how slavery really was. Clearly I had no idea until I read it. I really wanted to cry so many times during the book.
Everyone should read this book.
Awe-Inspiring!.......2007-02-25
Once I completed reading this book from front-back cover, I wanted to re-read it. I was incredibly inspired and humbled by Ms. Jacob. Her hardships, and brutal struggles were unthinkable, let alone, unspeakable. How she gathered the mental strength to put her story to paper is yet another testament of her tenacity and raw power of strength, love, belief, and courage against her most ungodly circumstances. She helped me to confirm my vow to strengthen myself in the name of all my powerful brothers and sisters....past and present. I will never complain about my life. But I will vehemently complain about the continued injustice placed on Blacks, both young and old. We, as a people, are moving forward, full-trottle. We can not and will not be stopped, ever. Let no man put us asunder! History has showed us most horribly what can happen. My life is a gift and a testament of the struggles of my ancestors. Harriet Jacob's story has given me newfound strength to persevere in my career and to live life fully. My ancestors's angst, fears, physical and mental tortures will not go unnoticed, forgotten, nor minimized. I owe my ancestors a good, if not great life! African-Americans are strong, proud and resilient.
"Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud"! Rise Up My People!
Everyone should read books of slavery. Learn not only the torture of Blacks, but the warped psyche of American slaveholders and the mental legacy they have passed on that is prevalent today.
"Reader, be assured this narrative is no fiction.".......2007-01-25
And with that sentence begins perhaps the most powerful personal account on the brutality of slavery. Written under the name of Linda Brent, the reader is led on a journey into this world of hate by a white power structure in the south & north through the experiences of Harriet Jacobs.
"I have not exaggerated the wrongs inflicted by slavery...." Jacobs writes. "Only by experience can anyone realize how deep, and dark, and foul is that pit of abominations."
And as I read this outstanding book, I reflected on how this country has never truly confronted the sordid past of slavery, the failure of Reconstruction and essentially a victory through defeat on the battlefield for those who were advocates of, shills for or operated businesses with slave labor.
This nation was built on the tears, blood, sweat and toil of millions, and Jacobs is one voice of truth, imploring those with open minds & hearts to hear the reality of human bondage.
The book should be required reading in every high-school American History class. The ramifications of rewriting history by running from the past must stop if this country wishes to step onto the path of true equal rights and justice for all.
Jacobs presents the facts. It is sad that it continually gets pushed aside for the fiction that is U.S. history.
Harriet Jacobs, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.......2007-01-05
This book was excellent, and I couldn't put it down. It was an easy read and would be appropriate for anyone over age 12.

Book Description
With a text by the artist's grandnephew, Bonnard brings a special intimacy to the exuberant, beautiful domestic interiors, pastoral landscapes, still lifes, and portraits of the French artist Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947), whose vibrant, colorful palette drew streams of art lovers to a recent retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Only a peek at Bonnard.......2006-12-22
This is a small book, limited in the scope of its scholarship and illustrations. The paintings chosen for the latter are pretty much standard to all books on the painter. In my opinion, there are much better works on Bonnard for those seriously interested in his work and life.

Customer Reviews:
Good Coffee Table book.......2007-02-23
I thought the pictures were nice & some of the information was enlightening...but for the most part this is strictly a coffee table book.
I don't think that the book is totally useless as some have stated...but I also don't think it's the best either...
Living in the Midwest...I bougth the book out of interest to better understand the Southern mentality on design... It did offer some insights...but not to the extent I'd hoped.
I don't regret getting the book...but I got it for a good price...I wouldn't pay full price for it...but would appreciate it as a gift.
beautiful photos.......2003-10-08
This book is wonderful with lots of beautiful photographs. There are colors that I never thought of using in my home, but this book has shown me that I can be adventurous and have splashes of pink or orange or brown, but still have a room look classic and elegant.
Limited in scope.......2003-09-02
Sadly, this book was a disappointment. The rooms are overdone and overwhelmingly done in dated traditional style. I wouldn't mind some classic traditional decorating, but it looks as if nothing but traditional style has ever made it south of the mason-dixon line! Sorry I bought this one.
SOUTHERN ACCENTS RULES.......2003-06-29
This is the fourth in the series of books written by the editors of Southern Accents Magazine. It is a truly marvelous resource guide for design professionals as well as "civilians" looking for ideas. Organized by color, the book showcases some of the finest rooms in the country, decorated by the best decorators working today. The text is both authoritative and fun to read, and the pictures allow us into some of the finest rooms in this country. There is nothing staid nor stodgy about this book. It underscores the absolute correctness that this magazine has developed under it's current Editorial team. While many rooms are tradtional in tone, there is a freshness and true sense of what contemporary decor is all about. While so many other magazines and books try to push "edgy" or "experimental" ideas, Southern Accents and it's books perfectly reflect the way people live now. As an industry professional, I read every magazine and buy every book on decorating that I can get. This latest book from Sothern Accents is as good as anything on the market. It is filled with ideas that everyone can implement into their own houses. A truly wonderful book that has a feeling of what a joy can be found in brilliantly decorated houses. The photography is flawless. This should be a must read for anyone who cares about decorating. And everyone should. Once again, the Southern Accents team delivers great beauty that is fresh and fun.
Enlightening.......2003-06-03
Everyone that owns a home should read this book. Absolutely beautiful photographs are combined with a wealth of knowledge. This author shows you how to mix colors, light and interior design to define the mood and character of a home. Very delightful, informative text that is easy to comprehend and enjoyable to read.

The Galerie des Modes has been called the "most beautiful collection in existence on the fashions of the 18th century." Published over a 10-year period, its plates were elegantly drawn, accurately engraved, and exquisitely hand colored. Here are 64 of the finest plates, reproduced faithfully from the originals and selected by costume historian Stella Blum.
Customer Reviews:
late 18th century fashions at their best.......2005-02-24
A lovely collection of 64 period fashion plates from Galerie des Modes. The plates cover the years from 1778-1787 and give a good representation of French high fashion in the years leading up to the French Revolution. The plates include court gowns, undress gowns, stays, day ensembles, riding habits, children's frocks and more. Complete with translated descriptions of each outfit and a decent glossary of terms.
Drool-worthy does not begin to describe in the goodies contained within. This lovely and inexpensive resource is a must for anyone interested in late century fashions. Get one for research and one to take apart and frame for your sewing room walls.
A helpful visual overview of late 18th century fashion.......2001-08-08
Stella Blum has selected plates of 18th century fashion from the Metropolitan Museum's collection and reproduced them here in full colour.
You certinally don't get all the plates produced in the 18th century but what you get is a helpful and representitive selection. This is one of the few books where you can see actual colour plates all reproduced in a sequence like this.
If you have any interest in 18th french fashion this book is both [inexpensive] and invaluable.
