5 out of 5 stars Great Textbook!.......2006-07-30

I just started my summer class a few weeks ago, and I definitely agree with the instructor that it's a truly great textbook! It's not as pricey as I initially thought it was going to be and it has a ton of art information. The CD and timeline are kind of useless, but I would still use them to study for exams or quizzes. If you want to learn about art in SOOO many ways, get this book because it's a treat!

4 out of 5 stars chosen paintings shown several times.......2006-05-01

I got this book for a class, and besides just using it for tests, I haven't opened it much. Most of the paintings in the first few chapters are also the same paintings in the last few chapters, though, and I thought it would have more variations. However, the info in each section is concise, easy to read, and the whole book is a great introduction for the beginner to the study of art.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for the begining Artist or Art lover.......2006-03-22

I found it to be detailed enough to learn about art without boring me. It was actually for a class I'm taking by found I read more chapters than required because it was a great overview on many diffent subjects from art to architecture

Received the book in time and actually it was very fast too. Product is great. A Million thanks.

Book Description

A simple walk through Washington, D.C. began a profound journey of personal discovery and renewal for Newt Gingrich, one of America's most influential politicians and commentators. At the National Archives, the immortal words from the Declaration of Independence that we "are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights," jumped off the page and into his heart with the simple truth that from day one in our country's history, the Author of freedom was not the state nor even the Founding Fathers. Our basic human rights and freedoms were-and are-"Creator-endowed." Gingrich sounds a clarion call for us to recognize that the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness that we hold so dear are inseparable from a sincere and humble acknowledgement that these gifts are only the Creator's to give. As a bonus, the book includes a "walking tour" of Washington, D.C.

5 out of 5 stars America, the Christian Nation Under God .......2007-09-26

This book was another top notch, highly informative conservative-traditionalist volume that speaks the truth that America is indeed a Christian Judeo nation at heart.

It is so vitally important for American culture to return to our moral religious values, and seek the historical truth that indeed the Founders were very spiritual people who upheld very Christian ideals in springing to life the American nation.

While Thomas Jefferson was a Deist (not an Atheist but one who believed that God had sprung the universe into life with little involvement in the affairs of man), many of the founders themselves were personally brought up in the Christian tradition. I can recall the miracle on Christmas when George Washington crossed the Delaware River to storm the Hessian base camp, or his Thanksgiving Day prayer.

One can come to the logical conclusion that the inspiration of the American idea was spawned from the both the secular notions of the Enlightenment era, and the philosophies of Christianity.

Regardless of those extremists out there who try to twist history into something that it wasn't for PC reasons or their own personal contempt for American Christian ideals, there is no United States of America with out the traditions and philosophies of Jesus Christ.

God, the Ten Commandments, & the teachings of the lord Jesus Christ will always be apart of America.

This is one fantastic book worth your time and money.

And if a loser named Peter decides to spam my review with is radical trash, please ignore him because he is an internet stalking pervert. (& no one cares about what he thinks anyway.)

5 out of 5 stars Rediscovering God in America.......2007-09-10

The book is an excellent reminder of the source of strength and wisdom that all our founders looked to as they made decisions concerning the founding of America. There is a clear discussion of the separations issue and the foolish conclusion that our leaders did not want God a part of public life. It reminds us of the importance that all leaders in the first 100 years of the country place on Christian faith.

America is the MOST faith based country in the world....But ???

Newt is such an interesting guy...it is worth reading to get a sense of the history of how our country's founders and there on saw faith as part of America.....buy it, if you have faith in America as well...

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-07-21

I read with interest how our founding fathers consistently built buildings with the reminders that there is a Supreme being, God, who has blessed us with this country, our constitution, and our democracy. There are so many nihilists around us that would destroy all of this. Evil does lurk in this world. A well writtent book, succinct but accurate with historical facts.

5 out of 5 stars Watch you words.......2007-08-07

This is the best book I have ever read on how important the words of our mouth are. Charles Capp makes it clear, to the point and backs up what is said with Scripture.

4 out of 5 stars for the saved only-advanced learning.......2007-07-07

There IS power in the Word...spoken. Believers DO have authority given by Christ. Capps is an expert at teaching these truths. Yet, he doesn't teach any other foundational truths of the Bible, which may hinder those without strong "roots". Also, I don't enjoy his writing style, e.g. he changes phonts alot for emphasis(i assume) which I don't get and he is repetitive. I do enjoy listening to him on the radio, and will look for his dvds and cds.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read.......2007-01-19

Fantasic book to learn how to operate the spiritual power available to all who choose to believe God's word. Deliverance and the more than abundant life can be yours. This book is rightly divided biblically and very interesting.

Do you have a family or relationship problem? Get this book.

Do you have a financial problem? Get this book.

In Genesis chapter 1, the tool that God use to create that which He wanted was "words". Guess what, words are exactly the same tool that you have to create that which you want in your life.

Problem is, most people are using words to bring that which they don't want. This book does an excellent job of getting you straitened out and creating that which you do want.

Even well-versed Biblical scholars might be perplexed if asked about Jabez, a little-known man listed in 1 Chronicles, chapter 4. Yet his simple petition is the cornerstone of The Prayer of Jabez and has become a call to live a more "blessed life" for countless readers.

The prayer is a simple one: "And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, 'Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain.' So God granted him what he requested."

In an era where many Christians shy away from anything that smacks of "name it and claim it," author Bruce Wilkinson alleviates misgivings by putting the prayer into perspective. Wilkinson, founder and president of Walk thru the Bible Ministries and a popular speaker for Promise Keepers, writes in a persuasive, conversational style that will woo even the most cynical reader. He has used the Jabez prayer for more than 30 years, and testifies enthusiastically to the changes it has wrought in his own life. Wilkinson challenges readers to recite the Jabez prayer every morning and keep a record of the changes that occur. The power, he emphasizes, is not in the prayer itself, but "rather, the power is in what you believe will happen as a result of the prayer, and the action you take." Wilkinson makes a convincing case. --Cindy Crosby

I promised myself I'd read this for a dear friend who asked me when he was passing away. I kept my promise, almost. I read 75% of it but never really got the prayer deal other than bless me and bless me some more. Sorry folks but I dont see what the hoopla is about?

1 out of 5 stars What did it accomplish?.......2007-04-29

I was just talking with my men's Bible study group about this very book. I remember when it swept through the church like wild fire. We recited it at my church every week. What exactly was the lasting legacy of this book? Nothing...nothing at all except it sold quite a few books and calenders. Actually, it might have indeed left a legacy...Bless me God, bless me...give me more and bless me indeed...ME
ME...ME...The prosperity preachers abounding today say similar things.

5 out of 5 stars Little Book---Big Message.......2007-03-15

I was a little taken aback when I read some of the negative reviews on this book. It inspired me and I keep a copy of it in my car so I can have it's message and 'the prayer' handy. Christians, just like anyone, sometimes feel burnout or frustration. For me, this was the bellows that blew on my heart to rekindle the flames of belief.

3 out of 5 stars Look for a book with more depth.......2007-01-12

This book was given to my wife as a Christmas present by the youth coordinator at our church. It's a very short book - only 92 pages - that can be read in just a short time. It is a light and easy read for a long afternoon.

Bruce Wilkinson takes the prayer said by Jabez in 1 Chronicles 4:10 and explains how praying this prayer can greatly change things in your life and bring blessings to yourself. Some may find the prayer to be a bit selfish, but if the blessings you receive are used in the right way it can surely be used to God's advantage.

The book is an easy and light read and there are plenty of good points about prayer. I like Jabez's prayer and it is one that I may apply in my personal prayer life. But the book failed to really spark anything in my soul. Maybe if I apply the prayer long enough this opinion may change, but for now, I've certainly read other books which have lit my soul on fire and really push me to make a difference in myself for the glory of God. I'm also a bit weary of Wilkinson's translations of what the prayer really means. There are no supporting facts to back up Wilkinson's claims of Jabez's meaning of the prayer. I would recommend this book maybe to a new believer just to give them a jump start with prayer (the book does encourage you to pray every day). But for someone who is looking for more depth in their prayer life, I'd suggest other books on the subject.

This book is very well written for the person who is seeking to learn about Jesus of Nazareth.

5 out of 5 stars This book has some very interesting points........2005-05-19

This books has some very interesting points on Satan and anti-God. It is required reading for anyone interested in religion and Christianity today. The book will help you deal with issues facing the real world in a holy sense.

5 out of 5 stars it connects his life to your life.......2000-05-08

As a previous reviewer mentioned, I also purchase this book in bulk to pass out. It is excellent. It is small and short, but packed with a common way to understand Jesus in his day and what that means for us in our day. It has helped many people I know to understand the Gospels much better and it has given them a confidence in knowing Jesus Christ.

5 out of 5 stars very seeker sensitive and full of refreshing truths.......1998-05-21

this is the only book I ever buy in bulk - it is great to give to people who are unfamiliar with Christianity,Jesus Christ, the church, etc. This book is very easy to read and the content (although their is no scriptural reference) is very accurate Biblically. I encourage Christians to read this to further deeper your understanding of Jesus.

5 out of 5 stars Christianity in a nut shell as originally taught........1997-08-27

No other book I have read is such a succinct summary of Christianity as originally taught by Christ. It takes us back to the times, history and original context without the intervening centuries of Church politics or dogma. Yet it is done in a practical, no nonsense, modern style acknowledging past/current religious and secular prejudices about Christ. In short, it is a discussion of Christianity that both Christians and non-Christians can be proud of without having to suspend their faith, reason, or intelect

5 out of 5 stars VERY INTERESTING BOOK.......2007-10-08

This book is one of the most interesting text book i have come across. It gives enough details of every well known religion. there are also photographs giveen to show you what the tevt is explaining.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer on the World's Religions.......2007-06-25

An excellent introduction to the world's primary religious and wisdom traditions: their origins, major tenets, peculiarities and similarities across the spectrum, and contemporary manifestations. Along with the companion book, An Anthology of Living Religions, this text offers a solid study in the world's religions.

3 out of 5 stars hard read.......2007-02-09

While Living Religions is a good source of information, it was incredibly difficult to read. It was like reading an encyclopedia. I did not like the authors gender bias.

4 out of 5 stars Archetypes explained........2007-01-08

Living Religions should be looked at as an attempt to describe and create an overview of current religious traditions in the world today. Thus, while it is descriptive of the practices, histories, and theologies of various faiths around the world, it attempts little psychological or sociological overview of religion as a whole. With practice dominant over theory, the title of Living Religions is clearly justified. Mary Pat Fisher has presented an overview of how religion enters the lives of people today.

The coverage is quite thorough. Introductory chapters present the primary universal ideas of religion both in general and by looking at commonalities in the various indigenous religions practiced mainly by small groups of people in often isolated parts of the world today. From there it moves roughly from India to East Asia, and then to the Near East in geographic coverage. Any religion followed by more than roughly five million people gets coverage, though the various denominational subsets necessarily are covered only in passing.

There are a few editorial aspects of Living Religions that should be mentioned. The first is that it is written as a textbook, with all that that implies. While it comes with suggested readings and bibliographies, and with study questions that haphazardly piece together the covered material, the writing also can fail to address the issues of religious passion and faith that makes tradition so compelling for so many people. In short, it can be rather languid. More to the point, it presents religious faith as an exclusively fixed and uplifting experience. Little is said about crises of faith or personal conflicts within. Followers as seen here are perpetually true and contented believers. It is the archetypes of religious belief that Living Religions presents rather than the actual living practice in most cases. The text provides many page-long case studies of religion in life, but only for the examples of people who are positively defined by such things. So here, again, we see the appropriateness of the title. Living Religions is not equivalent to Living Religious People, and what the reader gets is religion in the abstract. This is perfectly appropriate in an introductory text, though I think some level of exploration into actual practice would have been nice. What is less appropriate is that the author has at times made this perfection of faith a much more explicit editorial facet of the text. Examples of this are most clearly seen in the chapter on Islam, where Fisher mentions on far more than one occasion her opinion on the subject of religious violence and Islam. Namely, she rejects it, and in doing so shows that she is rejecting the truth of thousands of years of collective history. Fisher says, on page 480, "Whether state-sponsored or incited by militant extremists, violence finds no support in any religion." This is blatantly false, as a perusal of any number of sacred texts or newspapers will show. Under Fisher's editorial control, all paths lead to God, and so the reader here will find. Thus, one may look to Living Religions as a valid overview of the basic characteristics of the major religions in the world today. For deeper and truer insights, it's best to continue elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Living Religions w/CD (6th Edition).......2006-03-22

I found Living Religions to be very interesting and informative. Before reading this book, I knew very litte about religions other than my own. After reading this text, I discovered the beauty in each religion presented and was able to erase the stereotypes and stigmas that I once held. I recommend this book to anyone who has little understanding of world religions and would like to become educated or for someone who may just need a reminder. It is an easy read, with the exception of some of the vocabulary associated with the different religions.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-07-24

This book has got to be one of the best books I've ever read. It is definitely second in line after the Bible, of course. But this book does incorporate the truths of God's Holy Word. It explains how we must FIRST develop a STRONG relationship with the LORD before we EVER will develop a strong relationship with any one else.
Lady in Waiting proves to continue to be helpful to me as well. I read the book over a year ago and continue to turn back to it for insightful words and references.
If you or someone you know has ever struggled with any relationship, whether it is a family relationship, a friend relationship, a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship, or a marriage relationship, the book will apply to your life; although I believe the authors meant to gear it just to a male/female relationship, it can apply to any relationship in your life.

IT IS A MUST READ!

5 out of 5 stars Truth cuts like a knife.......2007-07-06

I loved this book and the study and meditation guides in the back of the book. The writers speak harshly at times, but truthfully. They are straight forward about what we do as single women. This will cause you to stop and check yourself. It will also force you to be honest with yourself regarding your motives. If you are truly committed to living a Christian life as a single woman, this is definitely a book to purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book!.......2007-06-04

I first was introduced to this book at the age of 21, and I think it is a fanatastic book. The Lord used it to radically change my perspective of my relationship with Him and of future relationships.

Jones and Kendall walk you through 10 godly characteristics that are displayed in the life of Ruth (from the Bible). Step by step, they show you how you can have a personal, intimate, love relationship with Jesus Christ, who is the Only One who can ever make us complete, satisfied, and content.

Though it is made clear that marriage is not a guarentee for some, we are shown that God promises to bless us if we seek Him first, and allow Him to fulfill us and be our Heavenly Bridegroom.

I would highly recommend this book to any single ladies group of any age.

Also, if you enjoyed Lady In Waiting, you may also like Passion and Purity,: Learning to Bring Your Love Life Under Christs Control by Elizabeth Elliot.

5 out of 5 stars very helpful.......2007-05-17

Our ladies group used this book for book study. we found it to be very biblical and easy to understand. It is espeically helpful for younger single ladies. I will highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Uncertain.......2007-01-20

I liked this book becuase it showed me that you really need to wait on God's timing for everything. However, I felt like this book was TOOOO religous and I felt like it tried to make me feel guilty for not trying to study the bible intensively. I am a Christian but I am not very religous. I felt like there was too much biblical refrence rather than actual guidance.

Book Description

The finest photographic account of Jewish life in America.

This extraordinary volume features classic photographs of the history one has learned to associate with the Forward—Lower East Side pushcarts, Yiddish theater, labor rallies—along with gems no one would expect. The premiere national Jewish newspaper has opened up its never-before-seen archives, revealing a photographic landscape of Jews in the twentieth century and beyond. From shtetl beauty contests and matchmakers caught mid-deal to the streets of the New World; from diaspora communities and mandate Palestine to the Holocaust, the Soviet Jewry movement, and the emergence of Jewish suburbia; from Paul Muni and Barbra Streisand to Woody Allen and Madonna—this book is a kaleidoscopic array of modern Jewish life. Original essays are included by leading intellectuals and historians, including Leon Wieseltier, J. Hoberman, Roger Kahn, and Deborah E. Lipstadt, plus an introduction by Pete Hamill. A great gift book in the tradition of Roman Vishniac's A Vanished World and Frederic Brenner's Diaspora: Homelands in Exile. 531 duotone photographs.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING PICTURES.......2007-08-05

I found this book very informative and very interesting. I enjoyed reading all the Jewish history in it. I was very interested in the information about Poland because my father's father was born there and I have a lot of his papers from when he was born in what was called Austria-Poland (even his birth certificate). It brought back many memories of my grandmother, who would take me to the Lower East Side of Manhattan where my father was born and we would shop in the specialty stores there and to the Jewish Theatre when I really didn't understand Yiddish but kept asking what they were saying and I did enjoy going. I have been recommending this book to friends and neighbors and have it on the coffee table in my living room and anyone who picks it up is fascinated by it, regardless of religion.

5 out of 5 stars Leftist Jews Carry On the Tradition for All Immigrants!.......2007-05-14

The Forward captured and related news for the new Jewish immigrants, and for some of them not so recent, in both a special political and social way.

Obviously, with my name as a Christian Irishman, I did not live the experience, but my significant other grew up in the rare environment of a Leftist (read, Socialist) community in the Bronx that continues to enrich the American political experience, as well as the peculiarly American, secular Jewish experience.

As a fourth-generation Irish-American, I am obviously somewhat removed from immigrant issues. On the other hand, the family oral tradition very strongly pointed out why my ancestors fled Ireland during the potatoe famine of the mid 1840's and how English political suppression of the Irish led to my family's connection to events in today's Ireland.

This book, specifically the photos and 'back stories', enable all of us of whatever immigrant background to re-live some specific moments in the American immigrant past that led to the building of a great community and to our country, whatever its faults.

While new immigrants arrive from the Caribbean, Africa, Eastern Europe, India, etc., and have their own stories to tell with their own ethnic language newspapers, The Forward will continue to stand as a model of 1) helping new immigrants adjust to their new homeland; 2) keeping them informed of news of their former homeland(s); 3) providing advice as to how to adjust to their new land. These are, perhaps, timeless topics in helping new immigrants adjust to their new land and circumstances.

The book and photos should serve as a rich tribute to striving immigrants of whatever religion, regional, or racial background to show how almost every new arrival wants to 'fit in' and contribute. Maybe this book, in some small way, will add a few "positives" to the current, embarrasing, and rediculous controvery over immigration.

1 out of 5 stars It's a Living.......2007-10-07

First things first. Totalitarian governments are very bad. Soviet Russia was among the worst. Anyone with any doubt of this proposition should take the time to peruse Harvest of Sorrow by Robert Conquest.

That said, this book, while adding something to our understanding of the evils experienced by those suffering under Soviet Russia's domination, is quite bad and, in my opinion, not worth the time and excruciating effort to read.

Kira Argounova and her family return to St. Petersburg following the Soviet Revolution. Conditions are, as one might expect, quite poor. Kira finds here ambitions checked. There is a symbolic love triangle. Simply stated, this book is a historical romance with pretensions to literary fiction. The underlying message of the story, however, is no deeper or more convincing than one would expect from a Nicholas Sparks novel.

Laying aside, though, the merits of the "We the Living" philosophy, my biggest problem with this book is the, quite frankly, poor writing. My four most serious complaints follow.

1. This book is overflowing with pointless verbosity - descriptions that, while wordy, convey no meaning. For example: "The girl looked straight at him, softly, defiantly. He answered with a glance that was an invitation, and a mocking insult, and almost a promise. Then he turned and walked to the counter, as she went out slowly." The tone of the book is undermined by this absurd wordplay. I found myself, on many occasions, chuckling at Ms. Rand's pretentious languange. The subject matter of the novel is not given much to chuckling.

2. Many words and phrases are repeated so often as to make this book seem like a parody. Are there really so many mocking, insolent, arrogant and defiant smiles in Soviet Russia.

3. There are a number of scenes in the book that seem absurdly unrealistic. Most striking is the scene in which Kira and Leo meet. Not only do they fall in love seemingly instantaneously in a rather unusual circumstance, but they also engage in dialogue artificial enough to make Mickey Spillane blush.

4. Finally, the coup de grace for me was chapter X of part 2, the preposterous meeting between Morozov and Timoshenko. The scene appears to have been lifted nearly intact from a below average episode of Threes Company. Indeed, Ms. Rand's contribution appears to be merely the lengthening of the scene from merely uncomfortably overlong to absolutely intolerable.

On the positive side, the book I read featured a cool illustration by artist Nick Gaetano.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome. A great book.......2007-09-20

First, a disclaimer: I am not a member of the cult of Ayn Rand. This is the first book I've read by her. I did not read it because I believe in Objectivism already, or am attracted to its tenets, with which I am completely unfamiliar. All I know of her, and that knowledge is dubious, is that she is the darling of many (what I would call) fundamentalist capitalists. I was looking for a good novel, knew that she was both reviled and adored, and figured it would be interesting reading, at least. For the record, most would call me a liberal.

I was blown away. I'm still not looking to join the cult, mind you, but I will read other books by her because this one showed evidence of a warm heart, an uncompromising intellect, and a fever for living well. Ideology was not permitted to run roughshod over plot or character. It's an astonishingly accomplished first novel, and ought to be a candidate for every serious book club and every list of great books.

Rand draws her characters clearly and with complexity. While she is a bit romantic, even her simpler characters, such as the lickspittle, Victor, are developed in such a way that the reader must ask difficult questions about who he is, why he is that way, and would we be different under the same constraints. Kira, the central figure, is sympathetic, tragic, heroic, and admirable - but also a conundrum. Given who she is, why does she do the things she does? Why the compromises? Are they compromises? What of the archetypal Party man, Andrei? Is he a tragic or romantic hero? Is he a naive tool? Is he redeemed, or is his naivete merely exposed? Rand crafts a story that raises questions that have no easy, vapid answers but that demand discussion.

For those who think of Rand as the patron saint of Gordon Gecko, of greed and looking out for number one - which is the vague impression I've had of her - the characters who are most narcissistic, most self-aggrandizing, are also the most contemptible. And the hero lives a life of selfless love, with disciplined passion and a dreams deferred. This is not a book to avoid because of preconceived notions about Rand and her ideology.

The book raises many ethical and political issues, but I didn't leave with the sense that the conclusions were foregone. She talks about the corruption of a well-intended revolution, and while it applies particularly to Soviet Communism in these pages, I take it that it could as easily apply to any ideology - political, economic, religious, whatever - that fails to serve the people it promises to serve. There is clearly a passion in favor of letting the gifted be gifted, but there are nasty aristocrats and noble peasants, both, here. There's no aristocrats good, peasants bad theme operating here. I see respect for the good, whether they be rich or poor, and derision for those without dreams or nobility. As a bumper sticker says, those who have smothered their own dreams will smother yours. It becomes their job.

In 21st century America, where ideologies are ossified, partisans are blindly simplistic, and we have few, if any, bridge-builders, We the Living is a compelling call to remember that our dreams have a claim on us that we dismiss at the cost of lives worth living. What are our dreams, and what comforts or phantasms have we traded them for? I don't think Rand wants us to sleep easily after asking these questions.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Magnificent, and Often Overlooked.......2007-08-24

I am a huge fan of Ayn Rand and while many of her readers think The Fountainhead, and especially Atlas Shrugged to be her best novels. I think We The Living is right along up there. This is a good deal smaller than Atlas Shrugged, but it still has a lot of power in it.

This book is a tragedy. So do not read it if you want a happily ever after. While the story is filled with misery, you are still filled with a profound longing for a better world. That quality is something Rand puts in all her works.

This book is not just about the evils of communism, it encompasses the entire spectrum of the 'individual vs. the state'. She shows what the state can do to a person, the state can grind a man down to nothing, it can leave an empty shell. And Rand shows what the state can't do to some people, the state can restrict a person, they can impose laws, they can cause tremendous suffering, but the state cannot always take away hope and desire even in the last few breathes one might take before they die.

5 out of 5 stars Great early Ayn novel. A frank look at a change to Socialism........2007-06-18

This book was unlike her later books. It's more of a look at actual history and the effects of an actual change in government. There were many here in the US who have wanted to duplicate Russia and change our government to Marxism. They came here soon after the fall of Russia, in the very early 1900s. They called themselves "Marxists" which didn't go over well. They then stole the term "Progressives" from the conservatives and are once again using that term. Today, they have finally come into power in our current congress (Pelosi) and the puppet masters pulling their strings such as George Soros & International Answer.

Another book that most haven't read is her first book. It rates a VERY high recommendation and is again much unlike her other books. "Anthem". I believe this was Ayn's 2nd book and the only one of this type she wrote.
I couldn't help but think that it inspired "1984" and "Planet of the Apes". It was a short, quick read that was entertaining and thought provoking. Like all her books, it doesn't compare two shades of gray, but black & white. I've long used this technique in analyzing questions relating to physics, geometry, math & life.

4 out of 5 stars good story; too much philosophizing.......2007-06-12

This is my first Ayn Rand book; I can tell from the other reviews that I may like the others better. The edition I read provided some good notes on Ms. Rand, which helped me understand the book. I am glad that I read this book first, since it is apparently fairly autobiographical, and since it was her first book. I found the story interesting and assume that the portrayal of Russia at that period to be accurate. The only complaint I have is that I think that the story is interrupted too often with Ms. Rand's philosophizing.

Book Description

Living Theater: A History conveys the excitement and variety of theater throughout time and the dynamic way in which our interpretation of theater history is informed by contemporary scholarship. Rather than presenting readers with a mere catalog of historical facts and figures, Wilson and Goldfarb set each period in context through an exploration of the social, political and economic conditions of the day, and create a vivid study of the developments in theater during that time. Changes to the third edition include the addition of new biographies of key players in the dramatic world, expanded existing biographies, and a completely revised chapter on early Asian theater.
