Book Description

For centuries, adventurers and scientists have believed that not only could we delay death but that "practical immortality" was within our reach.Today, many well-respected researchers would be inclined to agree. In a book that is not about anti-aging, but about functional aging--extending your healthy, active life--Dr. Sanjay Gupta blends together compelling stories of the most up-to-date scientific breakthroughs from around the world, with cutting-edge research and advice on achieving practical immortality in this lifetime. Gupta's advice is often counterintuitive: longevity is not about eating well, but about eating less; nutritional supplements are a waste of your money; eating chocolate and drinking coffee can make you healthier.CHASING LIFE tells the stories behind the breakthroughs while also revealing the practical steps readers can take to help extend youth and life far longer than ever thought possible.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-10-09

I was disappointed by this book, particularly because of Dr. Gupta's excellent television work. The astonishing breakthroughs to help you live forever are: get some exercise, try not to eat too much, and keep an upbeat attitude towards life. Ta-da!

The bibliography is the only part truly interesting enough to study, since it does point in some promising directions for more in-depth reading on the subject of longevity and healthful living.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough substance.......2007-08-28

I was not impressed by Chasing Life. Within the topics it covers (exercise, eating, supplements, memory, attitude, and the future) the practical information and suggestions offered were quite basic. The book focused more time than I would have prefered on how future technologies could extend life. This book is not for people wanting an in depth look into physiology of aging, or a comprehensive approach on how to combat it.
Stylistically ideas and sentances throughout the book seem fragmented. It's an easy read that touches on a few ways to improve your health, with a light conversational tone and lots of stories about the people Dr. Gupta meet during his research of this book.

3 out of 5 stars A Basic Primer for Longevity.......2007-08-22

I found this book a somewhat frustrating read. At times it seems as if it were written strictly for a tv audience, with the content skirting over issues in a glib and lackadaisical tone. It does mention early on that a companion tv series is in the works, and I got the impression that the book is a sort of script for the tv program. There is also some very poor writing, which at times made me feel that Dr. Gupta should have spent more time chasing editors instead of chasing life.

There is a lot of good basic longevity information but nothing that has not been revealed elsewhere. There are some gems in here, like the very clear explanation on what happens in cells to promote the aging process. At the same time, Gupta covers a lot areas that are still very speculative but doesn't tell you that until after you've read the few paragraphs or pages on that topic. This habit starts with the introduction, where he talks extensively about stem cell injections currently occuring in Russia, only to end the section by saying, essentially, "we're not there yet but there's a lot of other good stuff in my book you can follow".

The meat in this book is located at the end of each chapter where Gupta lists the top tips for that section to promote longevity. Again, most of these are not anything new, but each page could be a handy reference (for the rest of us) to help us establish new, longevity promoting habits.

In sum, the book is a good primer on longevity but takes too many detours in speculative areas and can sometimes jar you with its poor writing.

1 out of 5 stars Too New Agey and Vapid.......2007-08-05

This book really disappointed me. I thought Gupta would stick to more hardcore empirical science. Instead, this book covers a lot of questionable territory. In several chapters, Gupta sounds more like Ram Das than an actual physician. Other parts of the book, like his discourse on stress and immunity are just plain factually incorrect. Gupta leaves out whole areas of research and new discoveries, especially those at MIT. If you like this topic, stick with the other new age authors. Gupta is a weak imitator of those before him.

3 out of 5 stars Not for Physicians.......2007-07-11

This book is more suited for lay persons than physicians, although the occasional medical insight was informative.

5 out of 5 stars A Hit!.......2006-11-08

I read this book aloud to my class of 4th graders and they loved it! This book had humor, suspense, and positive messages. It also gave me the opportunity to teach a little about the history of the Gold Rush. A definite hit!

5 out of 5 stars A good supplement to the Gold Rush unit.......2006-10-26

I definitely enjoyed reading By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman, and I think it would be a great supplementary source for teachers to use in the Gold Rush unit. This book is a ficitional story, but it is full of historical accounts related to the Gold Rush era. The main characters is Jack and Praiseworthy. They set out on a journey in search of striking rich when Jack's aunt became penniless. The two main characters went on a wild and exciting adventures where they encountered many life-learning lessons about themselves and the historical background of that time. This book is definitely a good resource to use in and outside of the classroom, because it provides historical information along with an inspiring story about friendships.

4 out of 5 stars It had tons of action!.......2006-10-18

I liked By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman because it has a lot action. It's set in 1849. The main characters names are Jack and Praiseworthy. The book starts on a ship that's racing another ship to California. Jack hides a pig so the cook can't make Sunday dinner out of the pig. Jack and Praiseworthy get robbed several times. They go to the mining camps and try to strike it rich. I like the part where Jack and Praiseworthy go propecting. I recommend this book to ages 9 and up. If you like adventure and the Gold Rush, you would like this book.

5 out of 5 stars "I ground in a few acorns for flavor.".......2006-08-18

BY THE GREAT HORN SPOON! is written for younger readers but is a delightful light read even for adults, who will get through this book in one sitting.

The story concerns young Jack Flagg of Boston and his faithful manservant Praiseworthy who, upon discovering that Jack's foster Aunt Arabella is virtually penniless, decide to set out for the California Gold Rush and save the family from poverty. Along the way, Jack and Praiseworthy have numerous adventures (they are forced to stow away aboard ship, they run afoul of the highwayman Cut-Eye Higgins, Praiseworthy, a model of rectitude, becomes renowned in the gold fields as "Bullwhip," the man who can win any fight, and they strike it rich), through all of which they persevere, largely because of their wit, their intelligence, and their reliance on each other. BY THE GREAT HORN SPOON! is a wonderful lesson in the nature of true friendship.

A fun story with a fine sense of historical place and memorably colorful characters, BY THE GREAT HORN SPOON! is a story for children of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2006-07-18

By the Great Horn Spoon! is a wonderful and entertaining book for ALL ages. This book can be used in the classroom when covering the Gold Rush period or it can be read for leisure. The story is about a young lad and his dreams and quest for gold. He has a noble cause and he learns valuable lessons from an unexpected source. I would definitely highly recommend this book!

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

America , how well do you know your history?

In his Farewell Address, Ronald Reagan said if we forget what we have done, we will forget who we are. This book, written by one of Reagan's most loyal lieutenants, responds to Reagan's heartfelt call for an informed patriotism.

We all need to know more about this land we love. In this gripping tale of a nation, our country's past comes alive. Here is the story of those we chose to lead us and what they did with the awesome power we gave them. Join Bill Bennett for the great adventure. America's teacher will lead you on a voyage of discovery.

What others are saying:

"William J. Bennett artfully and subtly makes connections between our past and current events, reminding us ... that we are intimately and immediately connected to the extraordinary Americans who have bestowed upon us our great heritage.... [T]he importance of America: The Last Best Hope probably exceeds anything Dr. Bennett has ever written, and it is more elegantly crafted and eminently readable than any comprehensive work of history I've read in a very long time. It's silly to compare great works of history to great novels, but this book truly is a page-turner.... Prepare to have your faith in, hope for, and love of America renewed."
-Brad Miner, American Compass

"The Role of history is to inform, inspire, and sometimes provoke us, which is why Bill Bennett's wonderfully readable book is so important. He puts our nation's triumphs, along with its lapses, into the context of a narrative about the progress of freedom. Every now and then it's useful to be reminded that we are a fortunate people, blessed with generations of leaders who repeatedly renewed the meaning of America."
-Walter Isaacson, Benjamin Franklin: An American Life

"For too long Americans have been looking for a history of our country that tells the story of America's triumphs as well as its tragedies. Now Bill Bennett has come forward with America: The Last Best Hope, which tells the story-fairly and fully-from 1492 to 1914. Americans who have been reading recent biographies of the Founding Fathers will love this book."
-Michael Barone, US News & World Report

"Bill Bennett's book will stand as perhaps the most important addition to American scholarship at this, the start of the new century. For the past fifty years American historians have either distorted American history or reduced it to a mess of boring indictments of our cultural and political heritage. With this book Bennett offers to Americans young and old an exciting and enjoyable history of what makes America the greatest nation on earth.
-Brian Kennedy, president, The Claremont Institute

This is a must read for all Americans young and old. The characters in our Country's History come to life as Mr. Bennett includes the interesting details that you don't learn in school. If our teachers used this book as a guide for their classes our school children would retain so much more of the key thoughts and ideals that make our Country great.

4 out of 5 stars Good general coverage on US History.......2007-10-02

Many reviews state this book is void of great detail and only scratches the surface. Bear in mind it's a two volume set on the entire history of the US. How detailed could you be in just too volumes. I contend the book serves its purposes wonderfully. Yes, it's concise but a pleasure to read and a great refresher on the History we were taught in our high schools days. I wouldn't expect the book to go into exhaustive detail as the book is on US general history. I'd use this book as path to lead me to explore US history topics in greater detail. I like the un-political correctness usually taught these days - poor Indians, white man bad, stealing of lands from Mexico, Jefferson and Washington were terrible because they were slaveholders... The injustices taught nowadays can go on and on. But this book does not conform and gives us something we should truly be proud about - our heritage. The author is proud of his heritage as he conveys it. He uses humor and whit while the book moves along keeping the readers attentions. Its refreshing to read a positive view our history. My only negative is that this book does have some obvious spelling and grammar error better editing should have been used. The "story" is told of the founding and existence of a great country. It will undoubtedly leave the reader more proud than when he/she starting reading. And rightfully so! We live in a great country of rich history. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars I actually LOVE history now........2007-09-23

I never wanted to learn history. Seemed boring. I opened this book and now can't put it down. It's so wonderful to learn these things and be able to relate them to our lives today. This should be a mandatory book for all students.
Thanks Bill!

5 out of 5 stars History at its best.......2007-09-10

I bought this book after reading volume II, which I also loved. History is one of my weakest areas - I was never good at memorizing names and dates and am embarrassed about my lack of knowledge. Bennett makes American history come alive. After you read it, you feel like you know the previous presidents and their contemporaries personally. There is sometimes a little repetition between chapters, perhaps that was intentional. Other reviewers said that this book reads like a novel. Perhaps not as "quick" as a novel, but it's really a pleasure to read. Both volumes were so good I would read them again.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Review of American History.......2007-09-04

Mr. Bennett not only provides a well researched and documented review of American History but makes it a pleasure and entertaining to read! I bought it to read and can't pull it away from my 18 year old son who doesn't like to read... until now!

Book Description

Here is a rare perspective on a story we only thought we knew. For Apollo 11, the first moon landing, is a story that belongs to many, not just the few and famous. It belongs to the seamstress who put together twenty-two layers of fabric for each space suit. To the engineers who created a special heat shield to protect the capsule during its fiery reentry. It belongs to the flight directors, camera designers, software experts, suit testers, telescope crew, aerospace technicians, photo developers, engineers, and navigators. Gathering direct quotes from some of these folks who worked behind the scenes, Catherine Thimmesh reveals their very human worries and concerns. Culling NASA transcripts, national archives, and stunning NASA photos from Apollo 11, she captures not only the sheer magnitude of this feat but also the dedication, ingenuity, and perseverance of the greatest team everthe team that worked to first put man on that great gray rock in the sky.

5 out of 5 stars Will use this in class........2007-05-12

I will use this book in my middle school curriculum when I teach about space. When I showed it to students, they pretty much just looked at the pictures. After they watched "Apollo 13" it made a lot more sense to them. Then they wanted to understand more about the technology available at the time. This book makes a great companion piece to "The Right Stuff" and "The Dish" as well. If you are trying to get a historical perspective on that time period and didn't live through it as some of us did, please do yourself a favor and read it. The current textbooks cannot portray the taste of adventure we felt each time the astronauts voyaged out into dangerous places,as students back home gathered around black and white TV's brought into the classrooms to watch splashdowns. Knowing that the support structures have to be so huge may help people both understand why it costs so much to run a space program as well as perhaps pursue careers in the aerospace industry that are not just in the small astronaut corps.

4 out of 5 stars team moon.......2007-03-25

i thought this book was great. i added it to my classroom library and the students love it too.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Read for all ages.......2007-01-10

Definitely a juvenile-oriented work, but nonetheless very interesting and full of information not generally provided in accounts of the first manned moon landing.

4 out of 5 stars An Adventure in Science Fiction.......2006-11-22

Though I typically lean towards fantasy and adventure-themed novels, this was one of the few science fiction books I was able to appreciate, not only for its interesting word choice, but also for its unexpected suspense. The author of this book really paints an image in your mind. The beginning, for me, was something I had to somewhat struggle through, but once I got past it, I was able to dive into the past, understanding the fears of the unknown that the people of that time must have faced. What was it like to go to the moon, to step onto that land that no man can describe? And 400,000...that's no small number, just as it was no small feat to land Apollo 11 on the moon.

~From the reader

5 out of 5 stars Simply Breathtaking.......2006-11-08

I apologize for paraphrasing the title of Dr. Jones's review, but it really is appropriate and fitting; the book does give you "a catch in the throat [and] a hint of a happy tear in [your] eye in admiration for the men and women of Apollo" on so many different levels. Through her compelling writing and her keen eye for selecting breathtaking photos (in Thimmesh's context, even black and white, mission control shots are "breathtaking"), as well as the stunning layout and design she herself put together for the book, Ms. Thimmesh truly impresses on the reader the incredible nature of the mission and the accomplishments of so many who contributed to the endeavor.

I would reiterate the comments dismissing out of hand Mr. Waldron's completely off the mark review (and would ask other readers to consider the response to Mr. Walderon's review by clicking on the comments to his review). It would be a shame if any reader (and particularly children who did not have the privilige of experiencing those historic events first hand) were disuaded from reading the book and sharing, at least at some level, in the wonderous accomplishments of so many. It is hard to understand how one could not encourage everyone they know to read this book; failing to do so would not only deprive someone of (re)experiencing the truly awe inspiring nature of this epic event, it also deprives those who did so much for mankind (and it is hard to overstate the importance of their accomplishments--if on no other level than the perspective it gave humanity on the chunk of rock they share with each other) of some long overdue recogintion.

This is truly a book that should be read by everyone--not just children--to try and regain that perspective. I recomend it wholeheartedly to everyone.

The book is Simply Breathtaking!

Book Description

Are poltergeists energy fluctuations in the Zero Point Field?

Could even the simple experience of déjà vu be explained by the quantum theory of parallel universes?

Do thoughts have the energy to manifest and move physical objects?

PSIence introduces readers to the latest discoveries in quantum physics and New Science that may explain the existence of paranormal phenomena—UFOs, ghosts, poltergeists, mysterious apparitions, time anomalies, the Bermuda Triangle, energy vortices—and psychic abilities such as ESP, telekinesis, remote viewing, and recalling past lives.

You'll explore the cutting-edge ideas that are fascinating both scientists and paranormal investigators, including:

• The latest theories of multiple universes and eleven dimensions. • The Zero Point Field—is it the potential source of all creative energy? • The potential of every human being to experience the paranormal.

Many of the world's leading scientists, researchers, philosophers and spiritual leaders—from noted physicists like Michio Kaku to the revered Dalai Lama—are beginning to accept the possibility of alternate realities and dimensions that warp time and space. PSIence takes the reader on a journey to where the "normal" and the paranormal intersect, where the known and unknown converge, where science greets the supernatural.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible read!.......2007-10-07

PSIence is one of those rare books which I could not put down! I usually juggle 3 or 4 books at a time, however, this one got top billing on my nightstand for the 3 nights it took me to read from cover to cover. Yes, that's right, I could not put it down! Ms. Jones has the uncanny ability to explain highly complex scientific subjects in an easy to understand manner. She is able to bring lucidity to such sometimes daunting topics as string theory, parallel dimensions, wormholes, and other axioms of theoretical physics. The author is able to bridge the gap between hard science and paranormal phenomena with a level of cohesiveness which I have not seen from other authors. As a longtime student of both quantum physics and the unknown, I can highly recommend this book. With my discovery of PSIence, I feel like my vast collection of books could completely disappear and I would be satisfied with this one title.

5 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Compilation of Knowledge!.......2007-09-25

PSIence, weaves a remarkable grouping of knowledge from different fields of the Paranormal, into an understandable, cohesive directory, for the novice, as well as the educated lover of Science, blended with the Metaphysical! This is not a Doctoral Dissertation, but an effort to portray, to the layperson, the basics, and some great individual truths, with many links to the contributing inspirations for this writing! The Bibliography alone is worth the price of the book! So many links, that will allow you to further research the concepts presented, will keep the reader busy for many months to come! This is reference material people! I highly recommend this Book! Dave Reid, Bio-Chemist, Statesville, NC

5 out of 5 stars The marriage of science and mystic thought.......2007-09-16

I have been looking for a book like this for years that presents a unified view of the world, not this science on one side and mystic/paranormal on the other side.
It is also written in a style that is both easy to read and not "dummied down".
A great book to recommend to "scientific skeptics" that you might have in your life !!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Ghosts Explained by Science?.......2007-09-04

Two hundred years ago, if you had stopped someone on the streets of New York and told him you heard music coming through the air, he would have had you hauled off to the loony bin. Today, we all know that music does, indeed, come through the air and it comes to us on what we call radio waves. This is only one example of science finally catching up with and explaining what seemed like a paranormal (beyond normal) experience. It is likely that science will also eventually be able to explain ghosts, UFOs, ESP, and other paranormal oddities as "normal."

This is the premise behind Marie D. Jones' intriguing book, PSIence: How New Discoveries in Quantum Physics and New Science May Explain the Existence of Paranormal Phenomena. Jones, a lifelong student, researcher, and investigator of metaphysics and the paranormal, takes the reader on an incredible voyage into the world of quantum physics. She speculates not merely that science may be able to someday prove the existence of ghosts, aliens, time travel, mysterious disappearances as in the Bermuda Triangle, and other paranormal phenomena, but that it may have already done so!

Jones takes the reader on a dizzying ride through theories of multiple universes, hidden dimensions, energy fields, superstrings, Zero Point Field, wormholes, and time warps, to name just a few. She supports her ideas with the research of such eminent scientists and thinkers as Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi, William Roll, J.B. Rhine, Werner Heisenberg, and Erwin Schrodinger. Although sections of the book may warrant a second reading in order to better grasp their implications, for the most part Jones cuts through the hieroglyphics of quantum physics and new science, distilling it down to an essence that can be understood by the average reader.

The ramifications of the theories presented in PSIence are incredible. If these theories can be proven true, then everything we thought we knew about existence, everything we thought we knew about the nature of the universe is stood upon its head. With such potential, why wouldn't everyone read this book?

PSIence is an invaluable addition to the library of anyone interested in the paranormal; I strongly recommend it.

Book Description

Renowned investment advisor Marc faber sets out to find tomorrow's gold - the outperforming asset classes of the future. Far from being a sensational reading of the runes, this book delves deep into the past, to chart how old investor trends developed and assess how new patterns might emerge.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book about global investing.......2007-05-14

Faber, a pioneer in study global business cycles, successfully predicted many ups and downs of different markets in the world since the 80s. In this book written in 2002, he predicted the rising of China, and the booming of commodities due to the rising demand from China, India and other Asian countries. Years later, his prediction again has been proved to be correct. An insightful book about global investing.

5 out of 5 stars This author has been proven correct.......2006-12-24

I purchased this book shortly after it was published in 2002. The author has been correct in his advice to date (Dec 2006) and I believe will be proven right for years to come. It is a rare opportunity to find a book that so clearly lays out the future and helps you make great investment ideas and actually has recent history to see if the author has provided good advice.

5 out of 5 stars A "Big Picture" and "Very Long Run" view. Excellent Book!.......2006-03-19

Traditional wisdom about investing is full of conflicting messages. We all heard that past performance doesn't guarantee future results (means it's hard to say about future based on the past data). But at the same time, we are told that US stocks are expected to return about 8% annually based on the past performance (means it would be reasonable to expect 40%+ return over 5 years). And at the same time, in Q1'06 Dow is still lower then it was 5 years ago (hmm, if 5 years is not a long run, what is?). Each statement describes the US market, sounds simple and straightforward, but they are giving conflicting views, so this knowledge is not really helpful. Simple, but doesn't make sense.

This book does make a lot of sense. It starts with a very impressive overview of the global history from the earliest known civilizations. Then it tells you about cycles in economic activity. The quality and quantity of the facts and references is amazing! Then authors gives you an overview of the current situation in macroeconomics and geopolitics. And then he is explaining his view of the future, both short and long term.

It's is clearly not a "how to get rich quickly" book. The main focus is not what you should be doing but to explain you the big trends so you can make your own educated decisions.

The book is written in 2002, but it will stay actual for years to come. Actually now in 2006 it's amazing to see how acurate Faber's forecasts were.

The book is also pretty short and easy to read.

Highly, highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Common Sense Approach to Investing.......2005-10-01

I find this book informative, candid and very refreshing. The author is able to apply his broad expertise not only in analysing past events affecting world markets, but is able to project himself and the reader forward into possible future scenarios in the world markets. His premise is that future financial growth will be found in Asia, particularly China, with the USA and Europe lagging behind. His insight is useful to those who wish to position themselves early into an expansionary wave of financial profits. The information is based on sound research, uncommon knowledge, and a huge dose of common sense. This book is well worth the time it takes to read and the money it costs to purchase. Enjoy and learn!!!

5 out of 5 stars A book that one can go back from time to time.......2004-10-28

I first got to know Marc Faber on reading articles of financialsense.com. I then researched his book along with Jim Rogers' on Amazon.com. I bought both and more.

This is a great book for some one has just a little economic knoledge but wants to learn more. And it is great that he has explained the economic cycles, moving money centers, etc.

So for any one needs reasons to invest globally, for any one needs understand the history of economics, get this book and keep it with you to review from time to time. I guarantee you this book is better than any Wall Street financial adviser can ever give to you (do those people really understand the economics or investing? I personally believe the Wall Street just wants to suck up your money and make a profit for themselves).

Only two men would be inventive - and adventurous - enough to try to find out: Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, the MythBusters. Each week, hosts Savage and Hyneman, both special effects experts, use modern science to put another three urban legends to the test on their popular TV show. In this book, you'll learn how they either "busted" or confirmed fifteen myths on their show, often with spectacular results. Here are just some of the urban legends in this book:

Mythbusters: Don't Try This at Home! gets to the bottom of these urban legends and more, and it lets you do your own mythbusting with fun experiments you can do safely at home.
