5 out of 5 stars Well worth it........2007-07-10

I originally borrowed this book when I was looking for a history reference book to use with my seven year old. I enjoyed it so much that I had to purchase my own copy. Though I bought it to use for homeschooling my son, I enjoyed the book so much I was up nights reading it. The pictures are great, the layout is easy to follow and reference, and the content is inclusive without being complex or boring. I would highly recommend it as a great history timeline reference either for studying, reading, or browsing.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting History.......2007-01-17

We use this book almost daily in our home school. It is full of extremely detailed illustrations that can be graphic (a pile of human heads)but will draw children's attention even if they can't read the words. My kids were amazed when we bought a picture book with real photographs of Egypt and they were able to match up the original photos with the art in the Usborne book. Lots of information that tends to be a little too fragmented so you will need to supplement with other books to get a fuller picture of "World History" even for your kids.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-11-13

We bought this as part of our homeschooling and my kids are really interested in it.

2 out of 5 stars Returned it because of the drawings of topless women........2006-08-21

The drawings and illustrations are fantastic except for a few pages with women without tops (shirts). We don't feel that is appropriate for our grade school boys so we returned the book.
We could have torn out the pages or tried to cover them, but felt that wasn't the best solution.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for home or school!.......2007-09-14

I'm a high school social studies teacher and encountered USBorne books at a teacher workshop. They are very informative and vibrant texts. The internet-linked versions are wonderful. They include numerous links that accessed through the USBorne website, not the book. This allows for dead links to be eliminated and new links to be added (even more than are mentioned in the book). The pictures are wonderful, colorful, and some illustrations can even be downloaded for classroom use. I'm very happy with this book and use it in the classroom.

5 out of 5 stars Great general history book for young readers.......2007-07-14

My kids have loved this book. We are using it for the Sonlight Curriculum for level 6 & 7 for my 10 year old homeschooler. It is a great outline with lots and lots of wonderful pictures. The chronological approach has helped my son put pieces of history in place.

This is NOT a comprehensive text. It is an excellent supplement or overview, but is not designed to cover the details. The beautiful pictures have helped drive my son to other sources to learn more about particular events.

4 out of 5 stars Cool.......2007-03-13

This is ideal for young children. Great great graphics and illustrations, short concise explanations. It's substantial for the young reader/learner.

2 out of 5 stars USBORNE HISTORY.......2007-03-12

I heard so many raves about this book, so I bought it for my 10 year old.
The information to me was sparse, the printed words in the book are so tiny, I almost pulled out my magnifying glass for my child. The internet links, are links you can find on your own, by typing the subject in google. The price for this paperback book is riduculous. Very disappointed, ended up buying the Kingfisher history book, which I found so much better in reading quality and price, especially since it is a hardback and the Usborne book I bought was a paperback. Check if they have it at the library or school to see if, it is what you want, before you waste your money.

3 out of 5 stars Encyclopededia of World History .......2007-02-14

I didn't care for the first 100 pages, 1/4th of the book, being dedicated to the theory of evolution and millions and millions of years did this and that. I was thinking the book would be more directed to people, places and things. It is a very clear with simple presentations of the history of the world that can be shown to my grandchildren. However, it has a too much art work, as filler pages, which is typical of the new technology of printing.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated survey.......2006-11-11

This book consists of three parts: Early Civilizations, The Greeks, and The Romans. The first focuses mainly on Egypt, though it touches on others such as the Assyrians and Babylonians.

The strength of the book is the lavish illustration. The drawings are detailed and brightly colored and are intended to convey the realism of what is being portrayed. The book is a survey and, of necessity, only gives slight coverage to many important topics. That being said, it is a good survey and covers a great deal for a book targeted at this age group.

Any concerns over undue nudity are unfounded. There is a pictorial representation of a stylized fertility god Min along with more than two dozen other Egyptian gods. It does have a phallus as might be expected, but is in the Egyptian style. Elsewhere, the Minoan women are represented with bare [...], as one would see on almost any fresco from the period containing a depiction of women. That's about it.

I child will be confronted with depictions of nudity if they travel to any museum with ancient artifacts in their collection. Fear of the reality of this aspect of our historical past is the only thing that might prevent one from buying this book on that basis.

It is a shame that it does not seem to be in print any longer.

4 out of 5 stars Angry about shipping.......2005-09-10

Looking at ship options caused this to arrive the next day at a high cost.

2 out of 5 stars Not what we wanted.......2004-07-14

We returned this item after browsing it and considering it for our 4- and 6-year-olds. We had two main disappointments: First, we thought there were too many pictures in relation to the rather spotty text. Virtually all of the pictures are "cartoonish" hand-drawn illustrations rather than photographs. Yes, the pictures attracted our childrens' attention immediately, but we were wanting to teach them the ideas and themes of history, not just have them attracted by cartoons. And very quickly our six year old focused in on the nudity, asking us what was that unusual large "thumb" sticking straight out of the man--which was actually the erect penis of a "fertility god" representation. A previous reviewer wrote "Much prefer this to Usborne's World History which has more nudity than I can allow my children." Well, that picture and the several others drawings of nude humans (frontal male and female nudity in the "cartoons") is more of a distraction and problem than we felt our young children needed when trying to learn history. We are much happier with the Kingfisher books we obtained, which focus more on TEXT and IDEAS and relatively less on the cartooniness. They also feature no nudity. What's the point of including nudity and references to reproductive anatomy, for young children? More appropriate for older children, but by then the "cartoons" would probably look like such.

5 out of 5 stars Great History Book.......2003-05-02

Love the pictures and the write-ups. Much prefer this to Usborne's World History which has more nudity than I can allow my children.

5 out of 5 stars Usborne Book of the Ancient World:Combined Volume.......2003-03-01

Awesome book for all ages, the pictures are great. There is so much information, yet it is easy to follow and understand. It is well worth the money, and much more interesting than the history books in schools. This is a book you wished you could have had to learn with when you were in school.

5 out of 5 stars English as a Second Language.......2007-01-04

I purchased this book as a gift for a young boy in Germany who is studying English. He wrote me a thank-you note (in English) saying tne book is "brilliant." Even the adults around him had great fun looking at this lively book. I was attracted to the interactive format of the book. It can be used with the internet.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2006-02-23

This is a beautiful book that encourages children to learn about their world. Information is provided in bits, making it easy for children to digest. In addition, the internet links provide unlimited learning on the topics in the book. As far as the person who complained that they showed a photo of NYC without the World Trade Centers, I think you need to be aware that the book was published in 2002 and the WTC no longer was there, nor will ever be there in the future. Don't we need to depict the here and now truth in our books for children?

1 out of 5 stars Colorful book - bias presentation.......2005-09-22

While the book is well made and quite educational, I can not avoid but see the bias of the publisher in presenting the "world." I almost wonder what world are they presenting? P. 52-53 the "City" depicting NYC without WTC, and the picture of a Mosque in the middle of their "city" (no other religious buildings there i.e. no church or synagogue near by). Living in post 9/11 America I find this offensive. This is certainly not the "world" I would want my child to live in.

4 out of 5 stars The Usborne First Encyclopedia of Our World.......2005-09-11

This is a colorful and interesting science text for a first to third grader and definitely worth the price. It has a neat internet link feature which I know my child will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars What a great book!.......2003-03-17

This book is recommended for ages 9-12, but my 6-year-old ate it up and my 4-year-old enjoyed it too. I bought it because my girls are going through a knights and castles thing, and this was recommended as a good place to learn about them. I thought we'd just read that section and put it on the shelf until the other subjects came up. Well my 6-year-old saw things differently. She loves this book. She loves the way it is laid out and what she is learning from it. She had no interest in Vikings or Romans or Egyptians before this, but now she wants more on all these topics. And it is a fun book for me to read too. It is reminding me of things I hadn't learned since I was a child, and the diagrams are so clear that maybe I am learning things better than I did when I was a child.

5 out of 5 stars Four books in one, excellent information!.......2000-04-12

WOW, this is a compilation of four different civilizations, it includes ALOT of information on understanding how these ancient groups lived. I have learned alot of interesting facts every time I haved looked through the pages. The illustration in it is amazing, there is not a corner left empty in this huge book!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for the history students library.......2004-07-17

Not only does this Encyclopedia look impressive on the bookshelf, but it is quite impressive in content as well. On opening this 400 page hard covered book, it oozes tactfully and beautifully layed out illustrations and photographs from start to finish.
This Encyclopedia covers the Mesopotamian World, Ancient Egypt, Ancient, Archaic and Classical Greece and the Roman World giving you historical background along with insight to the every day life that one may of experienced in that time. For Example, in covering Ancient Rome, the major headings are Early Rome, The Roman Republic, the Roman Empire, Everyday Life, The End of Empire, The Roman Word factfinder etc.
If you want to look further into a topic that is covered in this Encyclopedia, it does add an internet link on the same page of that topic so you aren't scouring the back trying to find the link.
My only dissapointment with this Encyclopedia is that it does not cover Ancient China and other ancient civilisations. When I looked at the title of this Encyclopedia, I just presumed that they would be covered, but not so.
Other than this, this is a very user friendly Encyclopedia and glad it is in my home library.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction.......2002-07-27

My son who usually doesn't like to sit in one place very long, actually read the book for a stretch of an hour without any dangling carrots! I strongly recommend this book for any home library.

The book is organized by subject groups, ie birds, fish, plants, worms, etc. The pages are full of clear and short descriptions(just right for elementary school children), and wonderful pictures of the animals/insects in action. I found myself reading it with equal enthusiasm. It is a great introduction to the living creatures around us.

Great information, but would like to find a good reference book like this that does not include evolution as the primary theory of why things are like they are.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to teach young children about time.......2007-08-11

How can you teach a preschooler about how society changes over time? It is a very difficult task, but one accomplished with this book. Filled with fabulous, detailed illustrations, this book compares the way things were done "then" (late 1800s/early 1900s)to how they are "now". I had fun discussions with my 4 year old daughter about how people used to cook,
shop, and farm, for example.

This is a book published from Great Britain, so there are a few little "Briti-cisms" (i.e. calling a sweater a "jumper"), but it is entirely appropriate for American audiences nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and Educational.......2006-05-31

My son who is 7 loves this book. He loves to pour over this book and talk about the differences between different eras. This book is essentially a picture book with some writing. The pictures depict two scenes side by side from different times in history. For example, it might show the front of a general store with a dirt road, a stage coach, and wagon pulled by horses, women in long dresses etc. And on the other page it would show the front of a grocery store now with grocery carts, cars, etc.
