5 out of 5 stars Not an encyclopedia!.......2002-03-20

This is a narrative history of porcelain, lavishly illustrated. It covers only porcelain, not other forms of ceramics. It focuses on wares that I would consider exclusively museum quality. The illustrations are gorgeous. The text is gracefully written and thoroughly informative. Although it is not arranged topically as a real encyclopedia would be, it does have a marvelous glossary at the end that is an education in itself. With the caveat that this is a narrative not a topical reference, I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Overview Of Cleveland History.......2007-03-31

Updated for the city's Bicentennial celebration, the book is part of an ongoing series based on The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History.

Northeast Ohio historical consultant Carol Poh Miller and respected college professor Robert A. Wheeler - who has written extensively on early city history - present an overview of Cleveland's rich heritage, with an emphasis on the period from 1930-1996.

The authors split the history into four parts, utilizing more than 50 illustrations, with an appendix that includes the city's population from 1830-1990, a listing of mayors and a section of additional readings for those interested in delving further into specific topics.

The book does a good job in briskly - and punctually - moving through the city's history like an old CTS rapid-transit train on a clear summer day.

4 out of 5 stars Great introductory overview of great overlooked city.......2000-06-20

Good historical overview of Cleveland supplemented by photographs. Cut and dried, scholarly approach. Recommended as a starting point for historical research into what shaped the city.

      Book Description

The product of nine-years' research by New York State Museum curator Geoffrey N. Stein, The Motorcycle Industry in New York State is the first book to focus on the over one-hundred year history of motorcycle construction in the Empire State. Here you'll encounter the work of Glenn Curtiss, George and Percy Pierce, William Schack, John Glas, Edwin Thomas, Willis Ives, Carl Neracher, Leigh Evans and John Taylor among hundreds of other dreamers, designers and developers. You'll encounter the Emblem, Neracar, Monarch, Reliance, Yankee, DeLong, Marvel, Militaire and Rugmobile among other ordinary and extraordinary motorcycles.

And here you'll learn the mostly short but sometimes extended histories of such concerns as the Autoped Company of America, the Kiefler Motor Works and the Merkel Motor Wheel Company.

Beginning with the experimental motorized bicycles of the 1890s, the encyclopedia records as well, the golden years for the development of mass-produced motorcycles in the 1900s and 1910s. The work recounts the decline of the industry as the public adopted the automobile for everyday transportation. And it reports the recent renaissance of construction as a cottage industry, producing custom motor-cycles in small shops from Long Island to Grand Island.

Legendary scholar-activist W.E.B. Du Bois labored to complete an "Encyclopedia Africana" before his death in 1963. Just over 35 years later, two Harvard educators, Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Ghanaian-born Kwame Anthony Appiah, have brought Du Bois' intellectual dream to life in Africana, the most complete and comprehensive record of the Pan-African diaspora compiled into one volume. With over two million words and 3,500 entries from more than 220 contributors, Appiah and Gates sought, as they put it, to "give a sense of the wide diversity of peoples, cultures, and traditions that we know about Africa in historical times, a feel for the environment in which that history was lived, and a broad outline of the contributions of people of African descent, especially in the Americas, but, more generally, around the world." To fulfill this aim, they consider biographical, political, artistic, economic, historical, and geographical data; a brief sampling of topics includes "Food in African-American Culture," "Creolized Musical Instruments of the Caribbean," and "Anthropology in Africa." The section on Africa fills about two thirds of the book, loaded with invaluable information--from the ethnic and colonial factors that contributed to violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Eritrea, and Sierra Leone to the educational, linguistic, and social advances in Tanzania, Gabon, and South Africa. The legacies of the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Nubia, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe are also presented in great detail. The encyclopedia also contains documented evidence of African-derived peoples in Asia, including the exploits of Malik Ambar, who arrived in India from Ethiopia as a result of the East Indian slave trade.

Turning to the Western Hemisphere, Africana skillfully and succinctly synopsizes the lives and achievements of a multitude of African Americans, from 18th-century inventor-astronomer Benjamin Banneker to late-20th-century heroes like Colin Powell, Tiger Woods, and astronaut Mae Jemison. You'll learn about the little-considered black presence in Canada; Africana also uncovers hidden pockets of black culture in surprising places like Chile, Paraguay, and Argentina (where the Negro population, we discover, was reduced by a process of miscegenation known as blanqueamiento, or whitening). The upper-crust veneer of the Argentine tango is peeled away, revealing the dance's roots in the rhythmic innovations of 19th-century Afro-Argentines. With all of the aforementioned headings and topics, however, it's the special essays that best detail the treasure chest of scholarship of Africana. Robin Kelley examines the volatile clash between "Malcolm X and the Black Bourgeoisie"; Thomas Skidmore deconstructs "Race and Class in Brazil" and the myth of "racial democracy"; Mahmood Mamdani, in "Ethnicity in Rwanda," brilliantly decodes the complex and maddening colonial manipulations that erupted in genocide and made the Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups "more political than cultural identities ... one is power and the other is subject."

A splendidly packaged reference work that will adorn libraries and homes for years to come, Africana defines the black experience in the same sweeping way that the Encyclopedia Britannica defined Euro-American civilization. More importantly for young readers, the magnificent collection shows that Africans and the continent's descendants are a truly global people who have made tremendous contributions to human civilization. --Eugene Holley Jr.

      Book Description

Drawn from the acclaimed landmark in reference publishing, this incomparable one-volume encyclopedia of the black world is now within reach of every family, student, and educator. It brings the entire Pan-African experience into sharp focus, with entries ranging from "affirmative action" to "zydeco," from each of the most prominent ethnic groups in Africa to each member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Africana will provide hours of reading pleasure through its longer, interpretive essays on the religion, arts, and cultural life of Africans and of black people everywhere.

      5 out of 5 stars A Pan-African Dream Deferred Made Real.......2007-02-18

Scholars Kwame Anthony Appiah and Henry Louis Gates, Jr., paid homage to the great W.E.B. Du Bois' dream to produce an encyclopedia cataloguing the achievements and history of the African Diaspora with the publication in 1999 of the massive 2,095-page AFRICANA: THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE AFRICAN AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. Appiah and Gates duly acknowledge Du Bois' many contributions to history, literature, and the struggle for human rights around the world with: their dedication of the book to him, a regular encyclopedia entry on his achievements, and an "interpretation" by Cornel West of his historical significance.

While AFRICANA is exactly what the title implies, it is also quite a bit more. The book itself represents a major achievement of publishing technology. What Du Bois was not able to accomplish by sheer brain power and intellectual camaraderie, Appiah and Gates achieved through developments in modern communication technology, the computer, and a global team of dedicated intellectuals. The scope of AFRICANA encompasses literature, religion, music, dance, sociology, politics, and, above all, history. In reading the book for pleasure or referencing it for specific topics, one realizes just how much of the African-American and African experience has shaped and defined the greater modern human experience.

3 out of 5 stars No comprehensive Index again!.......2006-05-03

As a university professor in African American Studies, I looked forward to the first edition and bought it. But I was disappointed by the woefully lacking index which is also the case with the 2nd edition.

The five-volume 2nd edition is much easier to handle in terms of weight for each volume than the VERY heavy one volume 1st edition. However, one must wonder how Harvard professors (the editors) could allow a lack of a comprehensive index the second time around.

I bought the 1st edition, but I recommend not buying the 2nd edition. If a future edition has a comprehensive index, I will buy and would urge you to buy, as there is a wealth of information.

As for this (2nd) edition, save your money. Use the volumes at your school/university or community library for good general background information on the African and African American Experience.

4 out of 5 stars Great Coffee Table Book..........2005-09-20

This encyclopedia has plenty of useful information and gives the reader easy access to black history that is not easily researched (especially considering this Eurocentric world we live in). Great to have on your coffee table, exposed, so that guests can have a quick and random look at some black facts and history. This encyclopedia has entries that I would suggest be used to wet your appetite for knowledge and spark your desire to learn more, but not to be used as the sole source of info on any given topic.

4 out of 5 stars Where are the black fraternities and sororities?.......2005-07-24

As the author of The Divine Nine: The History of African American Fraternities and Sororities, I was disappointed to not see any reference to the nine African American Fraternities and Sororities, particularly since W.E.B. DuBois was a member. It seemed like a strange omission for such a comprehensive book.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Concise in word and spirit.......2004-10-24

Covering everything from Adam to Zakariyyah, this concise reference
guide is designed specifically for readers and students who wish to learn more about the world's fastest-growing religion. Fully illustrated, the book contains hundreds of alphabetically arranged entries, which give succinct yet authoritative information on everything from the Qur'an and its origins to the role of Islam in the USA. With even-handed coverage of the different schools of belief, and a timeline and guide to further reading, this is an indispensable and inexpensive guide to the Islamic faith (Publisher).

Brevity in description and presentation may be a laudable feature in a
concise encyclopedia. Elaboration is sometimes required to block
distractions and ambiguities. For instance, the book mentions Shii
as a group as opposed to Sunnis. But it falls short of explaining (under the entry on Sunnis and Shi'i) what doctrines of each group are. Sunni
Muslims believe that Islam is based on five pillars, namely, the profession of Faith or Iman, Salat or prayer, Saum or fasting, Zakat or alms-giving, & Hajj or pilgrimage to Mecca. In addition to these five pillars, Shii also consider Imamate (leadership of the descendants of the Holy Prophet, and their infallibility), Jihad (the holy war) and Taharah (cleanliness) as the pillars of Islam.

A Concise Encyclopedia of Islam draws a balance in its
presentation, as it aims to offer objective coverage of all the
different branches and movements within Islam, including the Sunni, Shi'i and Sufi traditions. The entries in this book explain key historical moments, pinpoint important geographical locations, define concepts from jihad to the Hajj, and outline the achievements of figures from Rumi to Malcolm X.

The best part of the book which I enjoyed reading is that which avoids controversial issues. The book does not take sides in its coverage of the existing shades of opinions. This is the greatest strength of the book, at a time when the Muslims, the followers of Islam, are more sinned against than sinning. The book strikes the balance and presents events in their true light. The balancing approach of the book makes it a useful resource.

Besides, the book is low priced and handy in size. Given its utility as a handy annotated dictionary on Islam, it can be acquired by public libraries and area study institutions specializing in religious studies.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been a great book.......2007-09-19

The author is a highly respected Hindu spiritual guru, and has deep knowledge of Hindu traditions. The present book is primarily a Hindu response to muck-raking and mud-slinging which many Hindus feel is the main output of Western scholarship.

The title of the book is slightly misleading, though the word 'True' should have been a warning. I bought this book eagerly hoping for a learned elucidation of Indian religious history. Unfortunately, the book turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. A large part of the book has been devoted to angry attacks on Western scholars (and Western-influenced Indian scholars), who have rejected Indian and Hindu views regarding out scriptures, and have floated their own theories and ideas. While I can empathize with this, the arguments have not been presented well, and some come down to almost a kind of shouting match.

This kind of a running fight has also affected the structure and coherence of the book, as there are frequent side-trips to counter-attack the culture-raiders. Amusingly, this is somewhat reminiscent of Prof. Amartya Sen's style of writing in the 'Argumentative Indian'.

Notwithstanding this blemish, the book offers some useful information about Hindu scriptures, orthodox views of Hindu timelines, and a Hindu perspective on some of the controversial issues.

To conclude, I do humbly submit that it would be useful for us to consider carefully what the Lord himself told Arjuna (Srimad Bhagwad Gita, Ch.2, shlok 62-63): '...unfulfilled desire leads to anger, anger results in loss of judgment. This leads to loss of memory, and loss of memory leads to loss of intellect. This causes loss of 'gnan' (knowledge).'

All in all, a useful book, especially if taken with a large pinch of salt.

          1 out of 5 stars garbage.......2007-09-13

          If I could give 0 I would.
In this book one can find only hate, hate and hate towards everything which does not come from India.
Of course not any scientific proof for history of India except his own interpretation of Puranas and similar scriptures.
          Do not waste your time....

4 out of 5 stars A Hindu perspective from one learned Indians Perspective.......2006-12-19

I gave this book a four star review because it's a hard slog. You've got to be genuinely interested to delve into the details. A fabulously researched view of Hinduism and Indian History from an Indian Perspective. The winners write history and much of Indian History and thought has been, sometimes crudely and other times subtly twisted and changed by people(s) with an ulterior agenda. The author points out where this may have happened, how and the potential reasoning - from his perspective. Whether you agree or disagree, this is a breath of fresh air compared to the tired old 'cows, caste and curry' formula repeated ad nauseum. At the least it is much better than any book written by 'experts' in US universities, who seem to see Hinduism and India through a sadly myopic and sometimes downright hostile view. With friends like these... read this book for a look through Indian Eyes and not through the foggy lens of the West.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not excellent........2006-08-20

I bought this book with the idea of knowing more about the history and religion of India as the title suggests, but unfortunately, the author seem to have diverted from the main topic and gets into criticizing others works.
I was little disappointed. But, I do give due credits to the author for going into depths and trying to analyze each topics in the book, very good job.
Would I suggest this book to someone who wants to know the history and religion of India, probably a yes. I would also caution the reader not to get too carried away with each and every statments that the author has written and would urge the reader to use his/her own good judgement. Some of the author's reasoning are not that strong enough to prove a point.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Guide for hundreds of generations........2005-05-16

This book is by far the most complete and authentic history of India and the Hindu spiritual tradition available to the English speaking world. This book covers so much information that the title doesn't do it justice. The author (an established and proven Spiritual Master) provides a complete history of India dating from the beginning of our Earth planet up until the present. In precise scientific and historic detail, He lists the development of every human civilization on this earth, explaining the development of their language, cultural shifts, the transforming of religious beliefs etc. In AMAZING detail the author gives perfect dates, names, and proven historic details that show how Hinduism has been mutilated by Western (and some Indian) writers which has confused the entire world for thousands of years. The book explains in perfect common language the source and common thread of all the Hindu scriptures in an unmatched style. Come to find out this book has been hailed by hundreds of authors and writers from around the world as the most factual and amazing book on Hinduism OF THIS AGE. The book is rather large and a few of it's chapters do read much like a text book simply because of the vast information it's explaining; However in VERY easy to read, basic common English sentences. Anyone could easily read and understand this book and I recommend it for extensive or casual study and especially for students doing research papers. A HUGE list of sources, an index and a glossary help the reader understand and elaborate the book. A vast website has been created by the author that captures the essence of the book on a web-format. http://encyclopediaofauthentichinduism.org I highly recommended this book to EVERYONE, looking to get a true and accurate spiritual history of not only Hinduism but a spiritual history of the entire world. Words cannot explain the wisdom and clarity this book contains.
