5 out of 5 stars Brings yesterday into focus for today's girl.......2000-07-26

My 7 yr. old advanced reader found this book not only reasonable to read, but it held her excitement at wanting to know what would happen to each of the characters as the wagon train progressed on its journey and met real dangers. It was not too scary, but filled with the concerns of real life in the pioneer days. The story developed the unfolding of a girlhood friendship in such a way as to show a young reader ways to ease into a relationship. It was a delight to read with a child and educational in many ways.

4 out of 5 stars The Pioneer Cat-Chapter 3.......2000-02-03

I really enjoyed this story. I really liked it when her family felt sorry for her and let her have that cat. It's about a little girl on her way to Missouri with her family, Ma, Pa, Kate, Benjy, Duffy, and Doris.

Great book and story line --- God can use us even when we are having an attitude problem, Both women in the story realized the blessing God had already given them.

Another wonderful book by Francine Rivers. She is one of my favorites.

This is actually two stories "threaded" into one.

I didn't think I would like it, but it was SO WELL DONE.

Sierra is reading an old journal from the 1800's while dealing with her present day life and cheating husband.

5 out of 5 stars redeming love by francine rivers.......2007-07-16

It was a GREAT book. I couldnt put it down! I feel that she taught me something about myself and loving others on every page! I would recommend this book to EVERYONE !!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Christian Fiction.......2007-02-14

"The Scarlet Thread" has two on-going stories at once and both are entertaining and hold one's attention. One story is set in the present and the other deals with an ancestor from the past.

The present day story portrays how a man has lost himself in his climb on the corporate ladder and thinks he's outgrown his wife. Ms. Rivers weaves a great story as the husband gets his eyes opened and faces losing his family almost before he knows what's happened. He comes to find out his wife is not as docile as he once thought and once she truly seeks God's help, the hubby is in for the ride of his life.

It's a joy to recommend this inspiring book to others.

4 out of 5 stars worth reading.......2006-11-21

This book has a few structural problems, such as not quite enough continuity between the two parts, and a main character who is at times hard to identify with. But it was still a touching story, exploring marriage problems and the source of true fulfillment. The part about Mary Kathryn McMurray seems the best. Despite a few unrealistic idyllic pioneer scenes, Mary Kathryn's journal was a captivating read.

Book Description

The inspiring story of a 4300km solo hike from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail.
Despite never having hiked before, George Spearing decides to take 'leave of absence' from his job as a firefighter in the New Zealand Fire Service and walk the length of America.
Travelling entirely on foot and off road, George's five month journey takes him through the desert areas and High Sierra Nevada of California, the Cascade ranges of Oregon and Washington, and finally emerges in the Okanogan Forest of British Columbia, Canada.
The diverse mix of dry Mojave desert, High Sierra snows and the characters and wildlife met along the way, provide an often humorous look at the US and its wilderness through the eyes of a New Zealander.
The lively and easily read style, including illustrations, will appeal to both adventurer and armchair adventurer alike.

Follow the adventure from its inception on an Auckland, New Zealand Fire Station, to its culmination in British Columbia, Canada. Traversing 40 Wilderness areas, 24 National Forests, 7 National Parks, 3 State Parks, 19 major canyons and climbing 57 mountain passes, the epic journey takes the reader from near sea level at the Mexican border to 13,200 ft at Forester Pass in the snowbound High Sierra. An entertaining and inspiring read for anyone contemplating hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, or for anyone who just enjoys a good adventure story.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Journey.......2007-08-15

Now I want to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. The story is well told, a real page turner. Well written, very interesting, and an inspiration for getting myself on a trail.

3 out of 5 stars Long on Kiwi humor; short on backpacking narrative and photos.......2007-06-26

This book was an easy read, but disappointing in its lack of photos and descriptions of life on the trail and destinations seen.

3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2007-06-19

Although I commend the author for his courage and humor, some things about the book distracted from reading pleasure. This read like a self-published book (maybe it is) that had not been edited at all. There were no paragraph indents, and many sentences were run-on (strung together with commas when there sould have been a period). I'm not a stickler about grammar, but this was distracting and made it hard to read. There was also a problem with tense and scenes suddenly switching. For example, in a camping scene, the author would suddenly mention that he saw 3 bears while camping, but it turned out that this was referring to something that would happen several chapters later, so that during the present scene I would wonder, "Where are the bears?" Often I would hope for an interesting scene only to be disappointed by a blow by blow of each day and night on the trail (including the days where nothing really happened). If you can deal with the amateur style, you may enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Any PCT Dreamer.......2007-01-23

My favorite aspect of this book is how the reader sees America (and the PCT) through the eyes of a humorous New Zealander. George's writing is a pleasure to read. I especially enjoyed the passage where he describes exactly why he hiked the PCT. He had obviously done a lot of thinking over the many miles he walked and had come up with a beautiful way to express the exact reasons as to why he would walk 20+ miles a day for five months.

The only aspect of the book I didn't like was that, towards the end, Spearing seems to be a bit tired of writing a book and resigns to simply listing the names of the wilderness areas he visits. This is in stark contrast to the excited, witty and funny tone taken earlier in the book.

Regardless of this, I thoroughly enjoyed Spearing's book. If you are at all interested in hiking the PCT, I'm sure you will like his book too.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book! You'll be happy you did.......2006-10-13

I shot right through the book and finished it off in short order. The reason, of course, was that I found it to be very interesting, humorous to the point of frequent guffaws and snickers, and inspirational. I truly believe that only those with physical and mental toughness have a chance to actually complete a thru-hike in one season. Add to that the perils of heat, cold, rain, snow, lack of water, scrapes, bruises, sprains or broken bones, loneliness, missed food drops, leaking canteens, dried-up water sources, high-altitude problems, indistinct trail markings, wildlife (bears and rattlers, e.g.) and a host of other perils, and it becomes apparent that one also has to be very fortunate and resilient to get through. I believe the odds are really stacked against success, and that is why stories such as George's are so uplifting. Add to all that, the fact that he was half a world away with very limited resupply support, and it became an incredible undertaking. I had originally thought that perhaps the next edition should include a dictionary of terms, so those of us unfamiliar with his particular way of expressing various words would be able to zero in on the meaning. In retrospect, however, I also believe that having to guess at the meaning adds to the magic, entertainment and humor of the story. Thanks again, George, for the great read. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors, adventure, and human triumph.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I expected.......2007-05-13

I ordered this book based on the film, " The Oregan Trail," which I enjoyed watching. The book is a good follow-up to the movie, making much of the content even more real for me.

4 out of 5 stars The Wild West.......2006-10-13

Parkman's travelogue on the Great Plains is a major work of life among the Native Americans. His descriptions are honest and capture a society that was fading even while he was writing. The book had a major impact on the way that non-westerners saw the Great Plains. This was both good and bad. Parkman wrote through the lens of a Boston aristocrat and was full of prejudices against those who did not meet his standards. This was dangerous in that many who read about the "backwardness" of the Native Americans used this as justification for "civilizing" them. Although this was probably not Parkman's intention, it was a consequence of his writing. In addition, he promoted the hunting of buffalo for sport, which led to the decimation of the buffalo heards on the Plains.

Another major issue with this book is that, in spite of its title, it is not about the Oregon Trail. Parkman went no further than the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains and he did all in his power to dissociate himself from the pioneers moving along the Oregon Trail. If you are looking for a history of the trail, this book will not satisfy your needs.

However, in spite of the misleading title and the prejudices that surface throughout the book, it is still a fine piece of writing that opens up a world that has been lost to today's readers. Read it and enjoy your travels into another time and place.

5 out of 5 stars Parkman the master of Historians.......2006-09-01

In a day when "historians" make comment on the long dead or events from the confines of their apartments, Francis Parkman is the person who actually experienced the history he wrote about. There is no political correctness in Parkman and he describes savages, French, frontiersmen and Mormons exactly as they were without apology.
This work is a masterpiece everyone should read and be a guidebook to modern historians who spend more time working a political end and getting in the way of history rather than letting history tell it's truthful tale.
Parkman is not just the historian or recorder of events. He is the bard of Sioux myth, the geologist, biologist and countless other things describing flora, fauna and weather. He is complete in having that air of Boston social elite in beginning his journey and returning from the plains an American having tasted, smelled and breathed the savage world and revealed the eastern thoughts on how that world would evolve for the next 60 years.
Parkman is remarkable and the best compliment for this book is to recommend that readers search for other Parkman histories to read as they are real.
I am currently in his wonderful Montecalm and Wolfe series on the history of Canada which actually created America. If you have children, share Parkman's history with them as he will make it come alive for them.
As you can see by all of the lengthy reviews, Francis Parkman invokes a great deal of thought and emotion in his histories which transfers to the reader.

4 out of 5 stars Generally exciting account of the Oregon Trail.......2005-12-04

The Oregon Trail by Francis Parkman is an account which further enforces the history of the Oregon Trail we had learned about in [U.S. History] class. The book portrays what it must have been like to travel on the Trail, never knowing what the next day would bring. The buffalo hunting which took place throughout the book became monotonous and boring after the first exciting few, but other than that repetitiveness, the journey was well depicted. I especially enjoyed Parkman's in-depth descriptions given to the reader of the people he meets on his journey and his observations on their actions as well. His vivid imagery of scenes from nature such as animals, prairie landscapes, and the weather, place the reader right next to Parkman in his adventuresome expedition. There are some dull, repetitive points in the observations made by the author, but aside from that his autobiographical telling of his journey is unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic for a Reason.......2005-03-12

The Oregon Trail still stands as a classic of American literature and of a rapidly vanishing past. Written as an account of a summer he spent traveling the Oregon Trail, Parkman captures the details of communal Native American life with no sentimentality, just hard reality. Even though written in 1846, Parkman is amazingly precise in his estimation of the vanishing frontier and Native American way of life. At times, he is rather callous toward the Native Americans, but this also reflects his times and environment. Highly recommended.

I have read the first diary of Joshua three times, the second one twice. I am about to read the third one, which is this one and I KNOW it will be good. I would also recommend other Dear America books and other books by Patricia Hermes to anybody. They make a realistic fictional person from the colonial times and describes how they feel while telling a conflict at the same time. I've already read seven Dear America Books. I liked every single one of them. And I know this will also be great, too.

Where to hike with Fido in Oregon: All trails certified as dog-friendly, dog-fun, and dog-safe.

*75 hikes throughout the state--many accessible from urban areas
*What to pack for your pooch (the Ten Canine Essentials) and what to include in a doggy first-aid kit
*Tips for hiking with minimum dog-impact on the environment and on other hikers

Ellen Bishop and her dogs, Meesha and Dundee, have hiked more than 750 miles together in Oregon--now they present the best, most dog-friendly trails found throughout the state. These trails do not require leashes (except in parks as designated), and host few hikers and even fewer children. They are free of cliffs, paw-damaging terrain, poison oak, nearby roads, off-road vehicle traffic, and other hazards of particular danger for dogs. All of them offer shade and lakes or streams for Fido to play in or enjoy a drink.

Many hikes are easily accessible from urban areas including Portland, Eugene-Springfield, Roseburg, and the Medford-Grants Pass area. There are also hikes along the Oregon Coast and in northeast Oregon, in areas including the Wallowa Mountains.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Dog and I like the book.......2004-12-26

I truely enjoy the book. We have been on roughly five of the hikes recommended in the book. The author states what difficult level each hike is. However, that is for her and her dogs fitness level. I only found one trail impossible to master so far. But that was because of fear of heights. After going on these trails I add my own comments to the book, such as how the trail was, if litterbags were available and if restrooms were on site. I also add a map were available and mark our own hikes. Because of this book we have discovered a few new trails to take. Thank you Ellen Bishop.

4 out of 5 stars another good read.......2007-10-13

This is the second book in Spencer's series about Ukiah Oregon, and like the first it's a fun scifi/mystery/adventure. Overall the pacing's good, but the ending seemed a little rushed to me. It was still a very good read though, and if you liked the first book you'll like this one too I think.

5 out of 5 stars A great writer.......2007-01-16

A bit out there, I enjoy fantasy more then SF and the basis of this series is a bit difficult for me to believe, but the writer is so good, that I have read the entire series and found I could not put any of these books down... A Great Read..!

4 out of 5 stars a different kind of fantasy.......2006-03-24

Tainted Trail is the second Ukiah Oregon story after Alien Taste. It picks up not to long after the first one. I like the charactors in the book and the way they relate to each other. During the course of the book Ukiah learns more about his heritage and who he is. In order to enjoy this series you have to be able to suspend your disbelief. Not the best fantasy I have read, but I did like it.

4 out of 5 stars Spencer.......2006-02-28

I enjoyed finally being able to finish all the offerings in this series! Wen Spencer is one of my new favorite authors and I eagerly await her latest offering.

5 out of 5 stars I wish this was more widely available.......2005-09-08

This is a vital story in the Ukiah Oregon series. I completely agree with the advertisements that say you cannot put down a Wen Spencer novel. Without the information in this book on Ukiah's history the series would be a lot duller.

Book Description

It is 1848 when Joshua McCullough and his family leave their home in St. Joseph, Missouri, and set off for Oregon on a wagon train. During their seven-month-long journey, many of the other families on the trail suffer devastating losses, but Joshua's is spared. During one dramatic crossing, Joshua heroically dives into a rushing river to save his younger sister Becky. The battered wagon train reaches Oregon after traveling over two thousand miles.

4 out of 5 stars Ok but Bewidering Edition of Dear America.......2006-01-16

I think my students will like this book and find it interesting but I am bewildered at the willingness of the author in adding gruesome episodes with little explanation. I find short passages that mention a gruesome death or injury and just go on to the next page. My main interest in using this book is for ESOL students whose reading levels are low but need American history lessons. This book fits the bill in history and reading level but I wonder if the book could have been written with a more comfortable fit. Students are going to end up with many more questions than a feeling of clarity. I will have to try to make that up.

4 out of 5 stars Okay but not great.......2004-05-07

This book is about a young boy traveling the Oregon Trail back in the day. He has many hardships and has to deal with lots of problems. They have to deal with death, sickness, and many wagon problems. The diary tells of how he feels and really shows his true side.

4 out of 5 stars Home here we come!!.......2004-05-05

I thought Westward to Home was an okay book. It was about a boy named Joshua and his family moving to Oregon. At the beginning of the book Joshua's grandfather didnt want to go to Oregon with his family. He thought it would be hard for him to leave his wife's grave. He eventually decided to go to Oregon with his family. Joshua was excited. Joshua's grandfather surprises his whole family with something he does on the trail. This book is best for boys. They can connect with how he feels and what he goes through.

5 out of 5 stars traveling along.......2004-05-05

This book brings you back to 1848. It shows you the hardships people had to face as they struggled to Oregon. Loved ones, live stock, and whole families were lost forever. As Joshua struggles to Oregon with his family he meets new people, forms new friendships, and meets up with unexpected love ones. As Joshua gets ready to leave Independence, MO. His beloved grandfather changes his mind and decides to come with Joshua and his family. As they go along Joshua's grandfather meets a young lady and marries her, this is a big shock to everyone. Joshua overcomes his fear of water and finds the courage to go on.

5 out of 5 stars Nature Loves to Hide.......2002-03-29

Patricia Hermes' account of this dangerous exploration needs quiet time to listen. The young boy's relationship with his grandfather becomes my chief reason for buying and recommending this book to grandparents who often care for children's needs more diligently than birth parents.
The author manifests a unique sense of humor when she creates the name for "ME-TOO". Capturing the surf and the breeze the story, WESTWARD TO HOME renders the journey as nature's spiritual turf. Mary Kelly,Toms River, NJ.

Purchased as a gift. If you want a book on hiking trails in Oregon, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book--Great Research.......2007-06-08

I really enjoyed this book. I own all of his hiking books and have done about 50-60 different hikes (some many times) because of him. I have lived in Oregon all of my life and did not know many of these stories that William tells in this book. My favorite part is about Silver Creek Falls State Park and how they use to float cars over the South Falls for tourists to view for ten cents. I also like the story about the building of the lighthouse on an island of off Tillamook.
I highly recomend this book and I hope William Sullivan writes more history books, because he is very well researched and is a very good author with an easy to follow writing style.

5 out of 5 stars What a Great Book!.......2000-12-31

My husband bought me this book because we're moving to Oregon; I'm thrilled with it, both the book and the move. Mr. Sullivan's writing style is wonderful. It is amazing what this guy knows about every nook and cranny of the state. I am eager to explore the terrain the author describes and look forward to reading his other books on hiking in Oregon. Every travel or hiking book should strive to be as informative and interesting as this one. Alas, its rarely the case. This is a special book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2000-01-26

After moving to Oregon a few months ago, I discovered this gem of a book. While most hiking books will have plenty of information about where to go and what to see, I've never seen one that's just plain fun to read before. The book is full of interesting and amusing stories that will keep you turning pages late into the night. And, even better, the places that are described--you can hike them! One "hike" described is through downtown Portland that describes the flood of 1894 (among other things). Sullivan writes, "Chinese locals staged a gala boat race from the New Market Theater up Second Street to Stark and back on First. Winning time for the eight-block course was five minutes flat, a record that is likely to stand for some time." Last weekend I did the Tillamook Head hike (#11). If you haven't heard the story behind Tillamook Lighthouse located a mile offshore, pick up this book and read about it. You won't be disappointed! It's the best darned hiking book I've ever read in my life!

Book Description

Wind-powered wagons; the $100 drink of water; mysterious empty graves; a cow that started a war. Read all about these fantastic facts--and dozens of others--in this fun-to-read book.

Did you know that some pioneers took a "shortcut" to Oregon that took them perilously close to Antarctica? Or that ferryboat operators on the Oregon Trail could earn nearly $2,000 per day? Or that many pioneers found ice in the middle of the blazing hot desert? It's all true! An entertaining read for young people or anyone interested in the great western journey.

1 out of 5 stars A booklet not a book.......2007-06-27

This $3 booklet is the size of a greeting card. There are 24 "fantastic facts" on 43 pages. The postage is $3.99. Buyer beware.

5 out of 5 stars Good for all ages.......2007-05-07

I purchased this book for my daughter who is 9. It is a really good book for children and for adults. There were quite a few interesting things listed in the book that I did not already know. A real fun book, but dont expect a doctoral thesis.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth reading.......2005-10-22

Although this book is not intended to (and won't) gove you a comprehensive overview of the history of the Oregon Trail, this is still a very good book to read if you are interested in the era. I learned quite a bit about it, and found it fascinating. Some great facts. Definitely worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Quick facts.......2001-08-11

This is a quaint little book that is full of interesting facts. My fifth graders have enjoyed listening to the unusual stories. The entries are quick and easy and great for filling those 5 minute gaps or introducing a lesson.

5 out of 5 stars Critique of the Review by Ms Debbie Keefer.......2001-03-09

Ms. Keefer needs to improve her spelling, especially if she is a 4th grade teacher (see her review). I live "on" the Oregon Trail, in Pocatello, Idaho. My wife and I visit Oregon Trail sites (especially visual "ruts") whenever we can. Michael Trinklein is a well-respected historian; this book is a keeper!
