There is little sugar but lots of spice in journalist Rachel Simmons's brave and brilliant book that skewers the stereotype of girls as the kinder, gentler gender. Odd Girl Out begins with the premise that girls are socialized to be sweet with a double bind: they must value friendships; but they must not express the anger that might destroy them. Lacking cultural permission to acknowledge conflict, girls develop what Simmons calls "a hidden culture of silent and indirect aggression."

The author, who visited 30 schools and talked to 300 girls, catalogues chilling and heartbreaking acts of aggression, including the silent treatment, note-passing, glaring, gossiping, ganging up, fashion police, and being nice in private/mean in public. She decodes the vocabulary of these sneak attacks, explaining, for example, three ways to parse the meaning of "I'm fat."

Simmons is a gifted writer who is skilled at describing destructive patterns and prescribing clear-cut strategies for parents, teachers, and girls to resist them. "The heart of resistance is truth telling," advises Simmons. She guides readers to nurture emotional honesty in girls and to discover a language for public discussions of bullying. She offers innovative ideas for changing the dynamics of the classroom, sample dialogues for talking to daughters, and exercises for girls and their friends to explore and resolve messy feelings and conflicts head-on.

One intriguing chapter contrasts truth telling in white middle class, African-American, Latino, and working-class communities. Odd Girl Out is that rare book with the power to touch individual lives and transform the culture that constrains girls--and boys--from speaking the truth. --Barbara Mackoff

Book Description

Dirty looks and taunting notes are just a few examples of girl bullying that girls and women have long suffered through silently and painfully. With this book Rachel Simmons elevated the nation's consciousness and has shown millions of girls, parents, counselors, and teachers how to deal with this devastating problem. Poised to reach a wider audience in paperback, including the teenagers who are its subject, Odd Girl Out puts the spotlight on this issue, using real-life examples from both the perspective of the victim and of the bully.

5 out of 5 stars On the upside..........2007-06-09

What an incredible walk through our nation's schools--though only eye-opening because I didn't realize how prevalent my own experiences were among others. How sad that girlhood aggression has been labeled a "culture". On the upside, that ought to give it the attention that such destructive behavior is due. I know, I know, it's been said before: EVERY girl and her mother needs to read this.

4 out of 5 stars Good to get it out there.......2007-05-02

I think the value in this book is its ablility to open up discussions about this subject. For generations, nothing has been said about it. Parents, teachers, school administrators, nobody wanted to talk about it. Without that discussion, nothing will ever change.

Odd Girl Out is beautifully written, sometimes heart-breaking, often maddening. I would have liked to have seen the author offer more solutions to the problem, but overall, I think it is a very valuable book and would recommend it to anyone with daughters.

5 out of 5 stars Odd Girl Out---the book.......2007-04-15

Great book, very easy to read. Parents and girls should read this.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting interviews, but feels repetitive and incomplete........2007-04-10

In Rachel Simmons' book, "Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls," she introduces us to three hundred girls from thirty schools across the country. Blasting the stereotype that girls are the kinder, gentler sex, Simmons' premise is that girls are taught to "be nice" and to "make friends," and, as a result, are unable to express anger that might destroy the façade of friendship. Because our culture does not grant girls "permission" to confront conflict directly, Simmons asserts, there exists a "hidden culture of silent and indirect aggression" consisting of "backbiting, exclusion, rumors, name-calling, and manipulation to inflict psychological pain on targeted victims." Simmons remembers how she felt when a third grader named Abby told the other girls not to play with her; she remembers her own responsibility in giving another girl the silent treatment. It is from that base of personal experience that Simmons conducted her interviews.

The book consists of Simmons interviews...many, many interviews. Over time, the interviews begin to seem mind-numbingly similar. Natalie's story, Lisa's story, Molly's story, Dina's story...each story becomes repetitive. At one point, I set the book aside for a week and found that I had lost my place. I attempted to find the exact page where I had stopped reading, but I found that it was impossible to do so. Since none of the stories stood out distinctly in my mind, I gave up my search for the "right" page; I picked a random early chapter that I knew I must have read already and resumed my reading.

I enjoyed reading the book, even given its repetitiveness problems, and with a lifetime of experience being the "odd girl out," I found it somewhat cathartic to read stories of young women who had experienced similar trauma. Simmons does some things well. Her explanation of the devastating impact of girls' aggression is compelling, and she does an excellent job of describing the dynamics of the hidden aggression. In addition, Simmons relates the various interviews in a compassionate and thoughtful manner.

Where she does not succeed, however, is in giving her readers tangible suggestions about ways to address the problems she emphasizes.
Odd Girl Out contains two hundred and seventy pages, but it is only during the last thirty of those pages that Simmons addresses possible solutions to the problems she outlines. In those thirty pages, Simmons tells readers to talk to their daughters, to tell teachers about what is happening, and to make sure that teachers take the problems seriously. Those are reasonable suggestions, but I wanted more. I did not find a plan to keep these things from happening to my young adult daughter in the first place, nor did I find a plan of action in the event these things happen to my daughter. It is not enough to recommend we talk to our daughters and to their teachers - my friends and I could suggest that plan to one another over a cup of coffee at Starbucks. Simmons has made a good first step in raising awareness of the problem. She needed to work harder, though, to provide parents and teachers with skills and with plans for action when facing these issues.

5 out of 5 stars Now I understand why some girls are suddenly so mean!.......2007-03-14

I read this book in preparation for my daughter's middle school years. I can honestly say it helped prepare me the first time she came home in distress over a friendship that had taken a negative turn. It gives insight into what might be going on in a girl's mind when she suddenly starts displaying RA tactics, and the devastating effects it has on both the aggressor and the victim.

My daughter took great comfort from this book as well as the companion book, Odd Girl Speaks Out - they helped her understand her friend's possible motives and gave her some tools to use to turn the situation around. It also helped me open up a dialogue with her school, who were very responsive. RA can be overcome, but you have to educate yourself and your community. Sometimes this has to start with the parent, not the teachers. This book is a fantastic first step.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, Wrong Age Range.......2007-02-10

I think the I Spy Series is Wonderful and Treasure Hunt has great pictures. My only negative is that the age range listed in Amazon is wrong, and even the 4-8 age range usually listed for this book should be a little higher, like 6-8. I have to admit that I have a hard time finding the pictures, so my 4 year old gets frustrated with this one.

I think the Picture Riddles is a great one for 4 year olds to start with.

The I Spy Treasure Hunt book is one of the many 'I Spy' books enjoyed by our family. We have the 'I Spy Extreme Challenger', 'I Spy School Days', 'I Spy Christmas' and 'I Spy Super Challenger' to name just a few of our books. They will entertain no matter what your age. Our children and now our grandchildren have pulled these books out many times. They are like magnets and will draw in whoever is around to your side to help find the hidden I Spy items. Here's a hint. If, no - when, you have trouble finding any of the objects turn the book upside down and that just might help. ~ The Boss

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous book for all ages!!!.......2007-10-03

My mother purchased this book for my son at the National Gallery in Washington and he loved it! Soon after, his pre-school class visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the museum educator shared the book with the children while discussing the museum's Calder mobiles. The kids and the teachers loved it so this past Christmas, I purchased the book for all of the pre-K teachers in his program. They were so pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed it themselves, with their classes and with their own children!

It is a delicate but wonderfully crafted book. The hunt for the little red dot is an added bonus!

Couldn't resist purchasing this book for my daughter's 3rd birthday. She is fascinated with pop-ups. This one is a work of art. Could be used as children's book or coffee table book. My daughter and 80 year old Grandmother were both enchanted. I would recommend this book to anyone young or old. Just as a sidenote I also purchased the Blue 2 book by the same author "creator". It is much easier to find the red dots than the blue 2s. This is much more fun for my daughter, but I preferred the challange of finding the blue 2s. Overall, beautiful books. Thanks.

The pop-ups in this book are extremely well done. I am impressed by their intricacy. It is not a challenge to find the dot, but that's hardly the fun of this book. I would not let any child near it though.

I purchased this book for my 5 year old granddaughter. Not only did she insist on finding all of the dots, but it had several of the adults intrigued as well. What fun we all had! This book will be a favorite for years to come!

    Book Description

A powerful and groundbreaking revelation of the secret history of the 1.5 million women who surrendered children for adoption in the several decades before Roe v. Wade

In this deeply moving work, Ann Fessler brings to light the lives of hundreds of thousands of young single American women forced to give up their newborn children in the years following World War II and before Roe v. Wade. The Girls Who Went Away tells a story not of wild and carefree sexual liberation, but rather of a devastating double standard that has had punishing long-term effects on these women and on the children they gave up for adoption. Based on Fessler's groundbreaking interviews, it brings to brilliant life these women's voices and the spirit of the time, allowing each to share her own experience in gripping and intimate detail. Today, when the future of the Roe decision and women's reproductive rights stand squarely at the front of a divisive national debate, Fessler brings to the fore a long-overlooked history of single women in the fifties, sixties, and early seventies.

In 2002, Fessler, an adoptee herself, traveled the country interviewing women willing to speak publicly about why they relinquished their children. Researching archival records and the political and social climate of the time, she uncovered a story of three decades of women who, under enormous social and family pressure, were coerced or outright forced to give their babies up for adoption. Fessler deftly describes the impossible position in which these women found themselves: as a sexual revolution heated up in the postwar years, birth control was tightly restricted, and abortion proved prohibitively expensive or life endangering. At the same time, a postwar economic boom brought millions of American families into the middle class, exerting its own pressures to conform to a model of family perfection. Caught in the middle, single pregnant women were shunned by family and friends, evicted from schools, sent away to maternity homes to have their children alone, and often treated with cold contempt by doctors, nurses, and clergy.

The majority of the women Fessler interviewed have never spoken of their experiences, and most have been haunted by grief and shame their entire adult lives. A searing and important look into a long-overlooked social history, The Girls Who Went Away is their story.

5 out of 5 stars shocked and saddened.......2007-10-10

i'm currently reading this book. it's taking me a while because although it's a fascinating and compelling read, i get so angry while reading it I slam the book shut, point my finger at whoever is nearest me and start shouting about these poor women who had their babies taken from them without any consideration for their mental, physical, emotional health or well being. anyone who says roe v. wade isn't the best ruling the supreme court ever made should be dope-slapped repeatedly. and anyone who isn't absolutely enraged or brought to tears by this book is not human. I knew people born in the 50's & 60's who were adopted and said they really had no desire to meet their biological mother because they were "given up," and i used to agree with them. i suggest you read this book, it will make you see things from a different angle.

    5 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking.......2007-10-10

I cried throughout - this is a heartbreaking book and a reminder of how greatful we should all be for a change in the times. I gave it to my mother in England, whose roommate had given up for baby for adoption and it was the most emotional that I had ever seen her (and that is saying something for an English person!) I have given this book to many friends as it is simply the best book I have read in years.

5 out of 5 stars The true story of "birthmothers".......2007-08-11

This book is a powerful explanation of the pain that so many women experienced after being convinced or coerced to place their out-of-wedlock children in adoptive homes. The case histories are told by the individual women and illuminate the shame and guilt that so many women experienced. It is important social history and will be very empowering reading for women who "went away" to have a baby.

5 out of 5 stars Elizabeth Counts, Where Are You?.......2007-07-28

Between the end of World War II in 1945 and the 1973 United States Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, many unwed girls and women were forced by society to "go away" during unplanned pregnancies - < to "hide" the physical evidence of their perceived moral turpitude, while the fathers, blameless and shameless, were free to roam about their usual lives and wild oat sowing> - and surrender the baby to "good homes" (2 parent households.) Then, adding insult to past psychological injuries, the Men in power continue to refuse to allow adequate access to birth and adoption records such that the members of the "adoption triad" (birth parents, adoptive parents and adoptee) can't find each other. Thus is created a large segment of the "Baby Boom" generation without medical/genetic history.

Ann Fessler found her history and has written an excellent, empathetic, anecdotal and well -researched history of her mother and other mothers who "gave up" their babies and the confluence of forces in the age of Ozzie and Harriet, McCarthy, and beyond. As this reviewer has cautioned in other reviews, a lot of younger women take for granted the great strides made in the brief period between the 1960's and now. This book and In Our Time: Memoir of A Revolution will remind those of us who lived through this period of the progress we've made - and teach the younger generations that they must be eternally vigilant, lest those rights be taken away. Rosie the Riveter, paragon of "We Can Do It!" womanhood in the 1940s, was shuffled off to June Cleaver's kitchen in the 1950s. As Santayana said: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Elizabeth Counts, your past is calling. Please contact me. Your daughter, my client, is looking for you. /TundraVision, Amazon Reviewer

5 out of 5 stars Riveting and heartbreaking. .......2007-07-23

I am an adult adoptee who has been reunited with my birth mother, birth grandparents and birth uncle. I found this book to be an eye opening look into the world my birth mother was living in at the time of her pregnancy and my birth. I've always been grateful to my birth mom for giving me my family, but this book shows that I didn't really understand what she was up against in 1967. I've spoken at high schools regarding my experience as an adoptee, and some people seem surprised that I'm 'normal'. Surprised that I have nothing but praise for my birth mother, the woman who 'gave' me away. As a mother myself, I cannot imagine a pain worse than giving your child away. I believe my birth mother did it as a selfless act, but reading this book has made me wonder exactly how much society influenced her decision. The stories in this book seem straight out of another world in terms of how pregnant girls were treated.

In response to another reviewer, this book really has nothing to do with abortion. I don't even recall it being mentioned more than a few times and even then it was just in a brief mention regarding society at the time or as part of a personal story. This book certainly does not condone abortion or suggest it as a better option than adoption. I'm sure that most, if not all, of the women in the book would say they are glad they had their children, whether reunited with them or not.

Luke is one of the shadow children, a third child forbidden by the Population Police. He's lived his entire life in hiding, and now, with a new housing development replacing the woods next to his family's farm, he is no longer even allowed to go outside.

Then, one day Luke sees a girl's face in the window of a house where he knows two other children already live. Finally, he's met a shadow child like himself. Jen is willing to risk everything to come out of the shadows -- does Luke dare to become involved in her dangerous plan? Can he afford not to?

    4 out of 5 stars Must Read.......2007-05-31

Among the Hidden, by Margaret Haddix, was a non-stop exciting book. Luke, a third child, has to hide from the Population Police because he is illegal. Now he has neighbors that took out the woods so he stays in his room and eats on the stairs. Then one day he looks out the vents in his room and sees a girl at the window of the house next door that he knew that there was already two children living there, so he goes over and meets Jen who is risking her life to free the "shadows" and tries to earn the right to be equal! Luke admires her but doesn't think he's brave enough to help her.

Margaret Haddix wrote this book to teach people that everyone should be equal even if they are the odd one out. Readers that read mysterious and intelligent novels should pick p this book and start flipping the pages of excitement! This book is for all ages that like to read. Don't hesitate; go to the library or book store now!

    4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-14

I have recently started to read this series. I think that the first book is awesome. It is about an illegal third child, Luke Garner, and his struggles to be free. I would recommend it for grades 5-7.

    4 out of 5 stars Great series!.......2007-05-10

Luke lives in a futuristic society where the government has decided that each family may have only two children. Unfortunately, Luke is a thrid child and must remain hidden all the time. Then one day, he meets another third child, Jen. She is organizing a rally to have the two child law repealed. Will Luke participate? Will Jen be successful? My 7th graders who read this book in their lit circle loved it and went on to read the rest of the series. What more could a teacher ask for?

5 out of 5 stars This book is very great!.......2007-04-26

This book is really a pleasure to read. It really changes your mood back and forth. Like one moment you are sad because Luke has to stay in his house and does not want to change his mind. But the other chapter you feel excited and tricked because he did change his mind and is out at the "sport families" house. Then you get alittle scared because they are thinking of doing a "shadow kid rally" and it really worried Luke and now my mood is a confused mood Luke and I dont know if he is going to be in the "shadow kid rally." But the book is awesome, read and enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars you will LOVE this book!.......2007-04-18

The name of the book I read is Among The Hidden and the author is Margaret Peterson Haddix. It is about a kid named Luke who is a third child, and back then third children weren't allowed. Luke was a kid who usually obeyed his parents so another family wouldn't catch him and turn him in. He had two older brothers named Mark and Mathew. His family loved him and they only wanted to protect him so they wouldn't loose him, but Luke wanted an adventure, or at least be able to go out and play. Finally, while everybody was gone Luke sees a child in the house window next door. To make sure he wasn't wrong he waited a couple days. He was right, there was someone else in the other house. So he decided to be daring and run to the house. Luke ends up meeting a third child that needs to be hidden like him. Her name is Jen. Her dad works for the population police, but he would never turn her in. Jen wants to have a rally for all the third children, which she has met most of them online. She tried to convince Luke, but Luke has a really bad feeling that something bad is going to happen. After a couple days from Jen leaving for the rally Luke runs over to her house to see her, but Jen and the other third children that had gone, had been shot. Luke was devastated. Luke needed to leave because now the population police are looking carefully. So Jen's father buys Luke a fake I.D. and he is now leaving to a private boarding school. It took place in about year 2000.
I LOVED the book Among The Hidden. It kept me entertained through the whole story. I think that you should read this book too. It has adventure, surprise, and will keep you wondering what might happen to Luke next.

I grew up reading books like the Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, The Three Investigators and the Danny Dunn series. I loved these stories and now my children read these old favorites in addition to many of the new offerings. It was my love for these stories that shaped my own children's book.John Fastramp and the Dakota 3000 Challenge

This set of books has caused quite a stir in our home! My boys (8 and 6) love to hear us read to them so much that bedtime has often been delayed because of "just one more chapter!"

4 out of 5 stars Classic young peoples novels.......2007-07-06

For a wonder, I never read a Hardy boys novel when I was growing up, probably because they weren't on the shelves at the librarywhere I got most of my books. Of course I saw the Disney versions and the tv series, but I never read one of the books until I was sixty one years old. Then while shopping online I found this boxed set and decided to buy it and read what the books were like.
The first thing I found was that these are not the original versions of the stories written in the late twenties and early thirties. The giveaway was when some of the villains stole a case of transister radios, which were not even invented til long after the forties. So this is the series rewritten in the sixties.
That said, the stories were ingenious and well written. Also, I liked the group of friends that were always ready to help the heroes with their adventures. Television lost out on a good thing when they did not mention these guys and girls on the shows.
After reading through the books, I passed them on to some of my friends, who are eagerly reading them, too.
These books are a good read and a fine memento of a time when it was considered possible for a pair of teenagers to take on a gang of criminals and not get killed out of hands.

Lost books from my childhood. The writing is very clever and witty, with that old 1950's charm.

4 out of 5 stars Revisit the best of the 50's........2007-08-26

If you like the simplicity and good manners of the 1950's with a bit of fashion thrown in for good measure then these fun and gentle mysteries are a treat waiting for you. They are quick and easy to read and will make you smile at the innocence of the characters. Get your teens to read them, if only so they can roll their eyes in disbelief at the sweet, well mannered girls. Enjoy.

    4 out of 5 stars classic!.......2007-07-10

I enjoyed these books. I am re-reading them as an adult and I find them entertaining. In today's "entertainment-age" these books don't hold up in comparison to what else is out there (i.e.Harry Potter (which I don't like), and others....) but they were written in a simplier time and with a trusting mind-set. (I think?) Either way, I recommend these books to any pre-teen and teen reader, they are worth it!

I loved reading these as a kid so much so that I could not wait to give the boxed sets as gifts to my granddaughters. The girls just started a reading club with them. Being that they are the first five in the series, it is a great way to collect them.

Like "One Red Dot," this is a marvelous book. The three-dimensional creations are a wonder and the book is a fantastic gift for people of all ages.. children learning to love books, artists, teachers and adults who have an appreciation for detail. Last but not last, the book is great fun!

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Red Dot...but still cool.......2007-08-31

I think my title says it all. I bought this book because my kids and I absolutely loved the Red Dot book. We certainly enjoyed the Blue 2, but it was a bit harder for the kids (5 & 7) and they lost interest early. If you are buying this book for an adult - I think you shouldn't hesitate. You will love the ingenuity of the pop-ups.

Who would have thought that One Red Dot could be equalled? Well, guess what? This is, once again, adorable and fanciful and mesmerizing. Even if we had to labor a long time to find the 2 on the very first page.

I love this book! All of my kids, aged 5 - 11 enjoyed trying to find the "Blue 2" they make it just challenging enough, but not too hard. The pages were really interesting. Great purchase

I find these books great mind stretchers, even for us older folks. This book especially is a learning tool because there is a page with all the letters of the alphabet surrounded by little objects that start with each letter. Another page groups things by category with overlapping categories. Really well done.

    5 out of 5 stars A lot of fun!.......2004-07-15

My ten year old son introduced me to this fun little book (OK, it's big, but thin.), which he has been looking at for several years now. It has fourteen, two-page sized pictures of a collection of odds and ends connected with school. At the bottom of each of them is a list of things that you can look for (sort of like, Where is Waldo). But, read through to the end, there is a riddle about someone you'll find in each of the pictures.

This is a fun book. It challenges the young reader to concentrate on what is actually on the page, and pick out certain select items. I like that my son reads it for fun, even as the book is teaching him to concentrate and search systematically. He loves this book, and so do I. We both highly recommend this book to you.
