Book Description
Planet earth, home sweet home
In the year 2000, world-renowned wildlife photographer Frans Lanting set out on a personal journey to photograph the evolution of life on earth. He made pilgrimages to true time capsules like a remote lagoon in Western Australia, spent time in research collections photographing forms of microscopic life, and even found ways to create visual parallels between the growth of organs in the human body and the patterns seen on the surface of the earth. The resulting volume is a glorious picture book of planet earth depicting the amazing biodiversity that surrounds us all. Lanting's true gift lies beyond his technical mastery: it is his eye for geometry in the beautiful chaos of nature that allows him to show us the world as it has never been seen before. From crabs to jellyfish, diatoms to vast geological formations, jungles to flowers, monkeys to human embryos, LIFE is a testament to the magical beauty of life in all its forms and is Lanting's most remarkable achievement to date.

An amazing book!.......2007-06-08
If you are not familiar with Franz Lanting's work this is an amazing first book to buy. It is full of stunning photos of a close approximation of the earth as it once was.
As has been said it makes a great coffee table book but is also a great addition to any library. For all the nature and photography enthusiasts out there, here is a great intro!
Lanting impresses again!.......2007-05-17
This is a wonderful book! The photographs are simply stunning and the layout of the book is great. This is an excellent sample of Lanting's work.
High impact book, but..........2007-05-13
Definately an impressive volume. Big, bold and generally with superb pictures. Also a nice concept book- the pursuit of time and change through photos of life and its diversity. However, for a book of this production quality (and it's very high), I was surprised with the number and degree of colour enhanced images and the lack of interpretation - either of the subjects (and their relationship to the theme of time) or of the technical aspects of the photography and the story behind the photographs (for the photo nerds amongst us!). To be fair, Lanting does provide single paragraph descriptions for each photo, but these seem like an after thought enforced by the publisher. Maybe writing is not Lanting's thing, pity, because his photography is impressive. Alternatively, I might have bought the wrong type of book: If you want something visually stunning to leave open on the coffee table, then buy it- it was a better deal than that offered by shops here in NZ!

LIFE: A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME by Frans Lanting.......2007-02-26
Having followed Lanting's photo career since the origin of Nature Photographers of North America, we anxiously awaited his Life book and were not disappointed. Here is represented the beginnings of earth, after the Big Bang, and the geological results.
Life: A journey Through Time.......2007-01-16
This book is very interesting. The pictures offer a very special vision of our planet.

Excellent resource.......2007-01-07
This is a great book with a huge content of poems, verses, rhymes, songs and prayer. There is a little something for every occasion, some old favourites and some never heard before. The reason this book has received only 4 stars is due to the number of entries with a Christian tone, it is however, nothing that could not be remedied with the changing of a word or two. All in all a great buy.
I Use It All the Time.......2006-11-04
This book is very helpful to me as a Waldorf teacher for finding verses to use in Circle, as "graces" before meals, opening and closing verses, poems for recitation, and to practice letter sounds, to name a few. And this is only in first grade. I foresee using it all eight years. My only complaint is that I can't use some of the verses or have to alter them for use in a public charter school because of the references to God or angels, etc.
an indispensable Waldorf resource.......2005-11-16
I'm surprised that I'm the first person to review this item!

Each section is arranged roughly by age, so that the verses and poems toward the end of the book are suitable for high school use, where earlier sections like Fables (2nd grade) and Farming and Building (3rd grade) work well for elementary school. In short, this is a book you will turn to time and time again.
Don't hesitate to purchase this one! It's a treasure.
Book Description
A century ago, outsiders saw China as a place where nothing ever changes. Today the country has become one of the most dynamic regions on earth. In Oracle Bones, Peter Hessler explores the human side of China's transformation, viewing modern-day China and its growing links to the Western world through the lives of a handful of ordinary people. In a narrative that gracefully moves between the ancient and the present, the East and the West, Hessler captures the soul of a country that is undergoing a momentous change before our eyes.

Deeper understanding of China.......2007-10-18
This is a great read for anyone but especially those who have lived or spent a significant period of time in China. Hessler gives the story behind the story to several parts of China. He's got a keen understanding of China that I really appreciated and learned from.
Great read...at once both epic and personal. .......2007-10-16
I really enjoyed this book from every angle. The individual chapter length makes for great bedtime reading - one chapter a night. It blends epic Chinese history with wonderful personal accounts of the present. Very informative of the subtleties of modern day Chinese culture and how the events of the past have affected the present.
I am currently reading Hessler's other book, River Town, which he wrote prior to Oracle Bones. It is amazing to see how his narrative storytelling has improved. Oracle Bones is very cleverly crafted and he writes with a confident, mature voice (but River Town is still quite good).
Oracle Bones combines all the best elements of history, personal accounts, travel writing and social analysis in one book. I believe there is something enjoyable for everyone in this book, and his self-deprecating humor as a stranger in a strange land keeps the mood light.
Don't miss this book........2007-08-06
Having read and enjoyed Hessler's first book, and because I am an ESOL teacher, I looked forward to receiving this one. Since I am not a history buff, the book provided me a good overview of the past of an emerging world power without ever becoming tedious with names and dates. The ancient past is covered, and the major eras of the twentieth century are presented from different points of view, so that a feel for the lives of modern Chinese people emerges without "studying" the main events which shaped their lives. The description (above, by the publisher) of the book is totally apt; it weaves past and present with stories of interesting, ordinary people, including one who emigrates to the U.S. I read many books and have a high literary standard. Hessler meets it. He is an informed, well-researched story-teller with a true artist's eye and ear. His attention to detail delights. While he does not aim for poetry, he writes with a graceful precision that is almost poetic. I found every part of this book fascinating. One caveat: nothing here is wasted, so pay attention to each character; the reappearances of many characters give the book rare depth and fullness. You may be disappointed only if you have already studied China extensively; I am fairly well-informed in general but wanted to learn more about this country. Oracle Bones provided both information and insight. I found it to be one of the most satisfying books I have ever read in any category.
excellent insight into China's journey.......2007-06-26
This work of narrative non-fiction is a wonderful followup to Hessler's last book "River Town." His maturation as a writer is evident in a book that covers a wide range of topics in Chinese culture, history, and politics. This book kept me glued through its use of personal story lines to shed light on each topic. This was a perfect read to prepare me for my recent trip to China. 5 stars!

Colin Fletcher is a self-described "compulsive walker." It is not unusual for him to pick up a map, drive to an area that intrigues him, and then start walking. It should come as no surprise then that a detour from U.S. 66 to visit the Grand Canyon on a June morning in 1963 inspired Fletcher to walk the length of the Canyon below the rim. In The Man Who Walked Through Time Fletcher recounts his amazing journey. For two months Fletcher struggled against heat and cold, lack of water and dwindling supplies. The terrain was, at times, nearly impassible, yet despite the physical hardships, Fletcher came away from his experience with a new awareness of how humans fit into the vast scheme of things. He writes, for example, of meeting a rattlesnake on Beaver Sand Bar: "Now I am no rattlesnake aficionado. The first rattler I met scared me purple, and killing it seemed a human duty.... Yet by the end of that California summer I no longer felt an unreasoning fear of rattlers.... Instead, I accepted them as organisms with a niche in the web of life. Accepted them, that is, as fellow creatures."
The Man Who Walked Through Time is a remarkable account of a journey both physical and spiritual. It is also a record of the Grand Canyon as it was before the massive influx of tourism. Fletcher's descriptions of the spectacular geography, the wildlife, and the remnants of much older cultures serve to remind us that the Grand Canyon has been around longer than humankind and may well outlast us.
Book Description
The remarkable classic of nature writing by the first man ever to have walked the entire length of the Grand Canyon.

A wonderful adventure story about a solo hiker/thinker........2007-04-03
Colon Fletcher is a well known backpacker who has written the bible on backpacking (The Complete Walker IV; Alfred A Knopf, New York). On this trip he talks about the planning and preparation for the trip and all the details of the execution of the adventure. He explains the natural history and the geological history of The Grand Canyon at length as he walks the length of it. He may be the first non-native man to do so. Mostly, Fletcher has a honest, smooth, enjoyable style of writing that I find enchanting.
The appendix contains a list of everything he took.
With a little philosophy, a little geology and a story of personal struggle with the task at hand Fletcher conveys something of a understanding of humankind's place in the world. One can ask for nothing more than that!
Had a deep effect on me.......2007-02-19
I read this book in my early 20s, about 40 years ago. I had recently discovered the study of geology, and had camped on the rim of the Grand Canyon several times and hiked the Bright Angel Trail twice. The book had a profound effect on me then, and moved me again when I re-read it recently. This is the record of a man's journey -- physical, psychological and spiritual -- vividly and poetically written. He not only traces his trail through the canyon, but the personal challenges he meets and overcomes on the way, and perhaps more importantly, his gradually deepening experience of the canyon itself, of feeling himself an integral part of it, at one with its immense mystery. In that way, it is a deeply mystical story, as well.
For people who read this book and enjoy it, I'd also recommend Colin Fletcher's more recent book, RIVER, his account of a much more recent trip floating the Colorado River from its source to the sea. Particularly more mature readers will find his identification with the river in its various stages, and the stages of his own life, engrossing.
A VERY INTERESTING AND INSPIRATIONAL READ.......2006-01-05
This well written volume is the story of one man and one trip. I suppose if I took the same journey, my motivation might be quite different and my story, I am sure, would be different. I think you kind of have to take this book as just that, i.e. one mans quest, one mans vision and one mans interpretation of what he saw and what he expierenced. I personally felt inspired by this work and felt as if I were reading the words of a kindred spirit. On the other hand, according to my friends and family, I am a bit of a flake, so take this review for what it is worth. Granted, Fletcher did have good support, but then I don't think he had a particular death wish either. If I could afford it, I would do the same. I do regrete that, as one reviewer pointed out, that the hype for the book could be a bit misleading to the reader. I suppose those that like living on the very edge might find this work a bit prosaic in that no death defying feats were performed, yet I really don't feel that is what this work was all about. I suggest just reading and enjoying it.
Amazing True Adventure.......2005-01-01
This book suceeds on every level and is one of the best adventure books I've read. Much more than a hiking guide, it is an amazingly well-written of a journey more mental than physical, as Colin shares deep insights into life, geology and the history of the Earth as revealed by the Grand Canyon.
Backpackers will appreciate his accurate portrayals of hiking: the mixed emotions before setting of on a long and possible perilous journey, the still moments feeling at one with Nature, the way everyday minutia and worry eventually recedes into the background. If you have friends who want to know what backcountry hiking is all about (without actually going on one), this is the book to read.
Also, for Canyon afficionados (such as myself), Fletcher's book captures the majesty, awe, and grandeur of America's (or at least Arizona's) crown jewel.
Although written in the 1960's, this account does not feel dated. It is very much more than a 'been-there, done-that' journal of a record-setting performance, but instead has much to offer to any reader. Highly recommended.
The Man Who Walked Through Time.......2003-12-18
The Man Who Walked Through Time, Colin Fletcher, United States: Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., January 15, 1968. 247pg.
The book, "The Man Who Walked Through time" by Colin Fletcher is an amazing book about how Colin Fletcher himself attempts to be the first person to walk the length of the canyon. Colin Fletcher really goes into detail about what he was thinking and feeling along the way. Not to say that he never talks about what he actually does, he just includes more about what his mindset was. You would think that a book about a man and his journey's would start out as the boring day 1, day 2, day 3 and day 4, then day 5, but Colin Fletcher throws away this idea and beautify pieces together a flowing natural story. He never bores you with every single detail, but instead talks about the most exiting things. The book "The Man Who Walked Though Time" is meant for any reader interested in the canyon or anyone that would want to follow in Colin's footsteps.
I myself live at the canyon, and when reading about how Colin Fletcher walked the length of the canyons National Park I was awe struck. Later I was relieved to find out that the Grand Canyon National Park boundary was a lot shorter. It was also nerve racking to thinks of how he is going to lug his food around for 3 months, but I was soon to read that he was going to have airplanes drop his food off at certain locations. "That's crazy" I though, "you would have to spend millions of dollars to be able to do that". That is when I learned that Colin Fletcher had walked that canyon in the 60's and back then it must have been inexpensive to have an airplane drop off your food or you had connections.
While I was reading the book, Colin Fletcher was talking about the Rhythm of the rocks and how he needed to connect with the beaver, and "be the beaver" and be one with all of the animals. I literally thought that he was going crazy, that he has been in the canyon way to long and has gone nuts, but then I started to realize what type of mindset he is in. He has been alone for so long in such a beautiful and amazing place. When I start to think about what Colin Fletcher was saying about the rhythm of the rocks and how our time and the canyons time is way different I really admired the way Colin put his thoughts together. It was just beautiful writing, that is all there is to it.
I personally thought that the book was amazingly well written, and like I had said before, the way Colin doesn't use the writing format of what he did every single day. He just points out the main facts about his journey.
The book really inspired me to just go out and walk the Grand Canyons length myself. Since Colin explained that he wasn't the fittest guy in the world it really showed that if you worked hard enough you yourself could walk the Grand Canyon. I can't think of anything that Colin Fletcher left out in his book. I mean sure he left out all the little details, which is good otherwise it would have been horribly slow and dreadful. I have never really read any other books about the canyon so I don't have anything to compare this book to. Don't worry though; I still thought that the book was great.
I have walked in and around the canyon a lot but not for very long periods of time. Colin Fletcher, in the book was talking about how Beaver Sandbar (a place in the canyon) really affected him and moved him. I thought that to be a little odd, but since I wasn't walking in his shoes I pass to much judgment. Other that that little oddity the book "The Man Who Walked Through Time" was brilliant. Go read it!

Excellent Resource.......2007-01-11
Miller's book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in learning more about sailors' valentines. She thoroughly covers the history of valentines, in an engaging manner that imparts a good deal of information. She has compiled a large collection of full page photographs of valentines from across the years - just beautiful! We found a wonderful artist who makes sailors valentines, and chose several to give as gifts, with this book accompanying them. A great read and a visual treat!
A kaleidoscope of beautiful shells.......2007-01-09
A Fantastic book to take to the beach. You will never look at shells the same way after studying these "sailor's valentines." I just wonder what the recipients thought when they were presented with these incredible works of art.
Intricate Beauty.......2006-11-12
This book is a pictorial feast for the eyes. The folk art of Sailors' Valentines has been captured in all its historical beauty. The intricate detail of each of the pictured works is simply amazing, and as an artist and craftsperson, I truly appreciate the skill and beautiful symmetry as documented in this book. The colors and photography are superb and the historical background and information are clearly detailed.
SAILOR'S VALENTINE'S ~ Their Journey Through Time.......2006-11-03
I found this to be a beautiful book. The photography and skill of the artists featured is remarkable. It is an inspiration for all artists (whether just beginning or established) who lovingly work on or collect sailor's valentines.

Delusions in Eden.......2006-08-19
"Dinosaurs of Eden" along with "D is for Dinosaur" (reviewed separately) are both attempts to popularize and promote a fundamentalist Christian worldview based on a literal misreading of the Bible. The book depicts a rather "Dinotopia" like place and time where humans and dinosaurs live together in harmony, survive a global flood courtesy of an ark, and then encounter a changed post-flood environment which causes the dinosaurs to go extinct.
Nice story, now what genre do we file it under? The author would suggest religion and history, but the statements made in this book only qualify for tragedy, fantasy, farce, or comedy.
The earliest dinosaurs enter the fossil record about 225 million years ago in the early Triassic. They finally died out at the end of the Cretaceous approximately 65 MYA. These are scientific facts that can be tested and verified by any competent geologist, paleontologist, or interested layperson.
Hominid fossils make a late entrance into the history of life on earth between 7 and 6.5 million years ago. Anatomically modern humans appear 100,000 years ago and behaviorally modern humans follow at 50,000 years ago. Multiple lines of evidence ranging from molecular and evolutionary biology to paleontology, geology, anthropology, and archaeology are available to support these scientific facts. The accuracy of these claims can also be objectively verified.
Every credible scientist and researcher concludes that some 220 million years separate the origin of dinosaurs and humans (birds happily excepted).
This book claims that dinosaurs and man were created about 6,500 years ago. No facts are presented to support this assertion. None, nada, zero, zilch. Astonishingly the author states that none are needed - and that science, as we know it, is a vast conspiracy and a lie, sustained by evil "secular humanists" who worship "Darwinism."
To back up these assertions the author claims to possess an eyewitness account of creation itself that is perfect and inerrant in every detail - a book known as the Bible, specifically the Book of Genesis - twisted, perverted, and rewritten by Ken Ham.
In this alternate reality dinosaurs are beasts of burden, seemingly domesticated; complete with saddles, harnesses, and wagons. They are all vegetarians, at least until a snake with legs comes along and ruins everything by charming Eve into eating some fruit. Triceratops would be right at home in a petting zoo, and Tyrannosaurs and Velociraptors frolic with children in a veritable Garden of Eden!
Even P.T. Barnum would blush selling this bill of goods. Charles Ponzi as well. Kenneth Alfred Ham glories in it. Ken's elastic and contrived fundamentalist "newspeak" cunningly substitutes lies for facts and cynically encourages readers to exchange reason for blind dogmatic faith. Just check your brains at the door brother and sister and drink the Kool-Aid. Its cold and sweet.
Is Genesis a science textbook or an allegorical myth? On this point the facts are in and the answer is unequivocal. Genesis is myth. And so is this book. Reality-based dinosaur books for children include Extreme Dinosaurs by Luis Rey or How to Keep Dinosaurs by Robert Mash.
Confusing for Young Christians and Dinosaur Enthusiasts.......2006-05-27
I do not claim to be a biblical scholar or a paleontologist, but my beliefs and interests in both subjects differ greatly with the theory presented in this book. This book is included with our Christian homeschool curriculum, and if I even choose to present this to my daughter at all it will be prefaced with a discussion about theories. I don't feel that any person (creationist, evolutionist, etc.) can prove 100% of anything with blatant assumptions and conjectures. This book contradicts many accepted beliefs by scientists (Christian and otherwise) and I feel this would do nothing but confuse my young daughter who has deep love and respect for God and a great interest in dinosaurs. The Bible may offer a person much of the most important things one needs to know, but you shouldn't manipulate the words to "create" information to prove or disprove every theory out there. I could respect the author's opinion and find the book more palatable if it wasn't basically saying that his belief is 100% accurate and any differing theories are lies. It is okay that we don't fully understand every detail in God's world, and not many people are arrogant enough to claim they know it all. While it is commendable that he wants to bring children to Christ, using bad science to do so seems unnecessary.
Later...I did decide to read this to my children and I used this opportunity to discuss theories and the limits of man's knowledge. We made sure to look up the scripture quoted in 3 different translations of the Bible (there were incidents which they didn't gel). I did my best to present it in an open-minded way (unlike the author) and let my daughters decide what they thought of the author's ideas. I then chose to donate the book to a friend who is much more conservative than I and who appreciates Ken Ham.
Awesome Book for kids and Adults!!!.......2006-02-26
This is truely a wonderfull book for those who beleive the bible as the literal word of God and a literal creation. if you dont belive that then dont bother with the book. For the rest of us... It is well done and is enjoyed by all of our children ages 12, 7, 5, and 2 year old. But I think we as parents enjoyed the book even more. A great family book. Also it would be great for a church or school library.
don't be mad, be glad!!!.......2005-09-06
This book is awesome!!! Makes total sense if you believe in the Bible!!
Highly entertaining.......2005-06-13
I am a sort of collector of crank literature and recently ordered Ham's "Dinosaurs of Eden." I could not be more delighted.
For anyone interested in this sort of literature for either social study of the boundaries of human belief, or simply for humor, I highly recommend it. The illustrations of dinosaurs and humans playfully interacting are absolutely hilarious and the standard young earth creationist arguments are almost as entertaining. While I share with genuine scientists the concern over the wild distortions of creationists of various stripes, anyone who can step back and enjoy the entertainment value of the their most absurd literature will want to own this book and to show it your friends.
Book Description
Frank Conroy first visited Nantucket with a gang of college friends in 1955. They came on a whim, and for Conroy it was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with this "small, relaxed oasis in the ocean." This book, part travel diary, part memoir, is a hauntingly evocative and personal journey through Nantucket: its sweeping dunes, rugged moors, remote beaches, secret fishing spots, and hidden forests and cranberry bogs. Admirers of Conroy’s classic and acclaimed memoir
Stop-Time will again delight in what James Atlas, writing in the New York Times, called his "genius for close observation."
In
Time and Tide, Conroy recounts the island’s history from the glory days of the whaling boom to the present, when tourism dominates. He vividly evokes the clash of cultures between the working class and the super-rich, with the fragile ecology of the island always in the balance. But most fascinating of all, he tells his own story--of playing jazz piano in the island’s bars; of raising a barn in the early '60s with the help of a bunch of hippie carpenters; of leasing an old, failed bar with two island pals and turning it into the Roadhouse, a club "that was to be ours, the year-rounders, and to hell with the summer people." There’s a marvelous story of his first golf game, played on an ancient nine-hole course with two friends, a part-time sommelier and a builder from the South who invented the one-handed pepper mill.
This is a book that revels in friendship, music, history, and the gorgeous landscape of a unique American place, and is a wonderful work by one of our greatest contemporary writers.

Island Memories.......2004-04-16
I just started this book this morning and am almost done. It made me nostalgic for my old home, the way it used to be, yes, but for those of us who have had to leave Nantucket for one reason or another, it will always be a wonderful place. Reading it I feel like I am on a wonderful visit home. It's one of those books you don't want to end but at the same time can't put down!
A great read.......2004-04-12
Frank Conroy speaks from the heart. Nantucket Island has gone through some dramatic changes in
the last 30 years, most not for the better. For some of us that still live here, it`s wonderful to be able to read and remember those times when the Island felt like a place of sanctuary from all else. The stories give the reader the felling that the Grey Lady`s Skirt has been torn but her sole has not been touched.
Thank you Mr. Conroy
A Chef from the Rock
Long live the Roadhouse!.......2004-04-08
I'm one of the author's three sons, so I won't pretend to be unbiased. But listen, this book is great, empirically speaking. Dad light-heartedly provides a fun and fascinating window into the small island so many of us love.
Book Description
Readers of Kali's Odiyya will be thrilled to see Shambu, Sandhya, and Aunt Preema return in this new memoir in which we encounter the dark odiyyas, predatory sorcerers from realms below the conscious human realm. Aunt Preema and the agorhi (mystics) prepare Shambu (the author's name in his native land) and his mystical companion Sandhya for a descent into the underworld to rescue a disciple of their group. We learn with them about assimilating logical awareness into dream awareness in order to travel into the astral realm, working with herb awareness, and the miraculous healing that can be achieved in the astral realm and manifested in the physical one.
This exciting story contains information about incarnation, karma, the subtle body and the "cosmology" of consciousness. More than a New Age novel, Medicine of Light will make you want to read it in one sitting and come back again and again for its valuable teachings in consciousness.

With all Modesty - a True Master in an Ancient Matrilinear Tradtition.......2007-05-28
This book ("by popular request" really) contains the teachings in response to the kind of questions one asks only after one stops being afraid of the answers.
Amarananda Bhairavan is the conduit for his aunt Preema's unadulterated wisdom. There is no fashionable or slick feel-good stuff, nothing one could tweak into a foundation for a (pseudo-) spiritual empire.
I guess, when you read this review/opinion, you must have been led here and probably are ready to receive the gifts and blessings offered in this rare source of knowledge and inspiration.
Beyond Expectations.......2007-04-28
Being an avid lover of Kali's Odiyya by Amarananda Bhairavan, the bar was held high as I dove into his second book Medicine of Light. It was beyond my expectations. For the second time, I have found incredible engagement and excitement from the story line and heart-opening gratitude for the body of knowledge embedded in this story. This is the kind of knowledge that is not offered in seminars or weekend courses. Even if you set out to look for it, it is a rare find. This book along with Kali's Odiyya will be my most turned to for reference on Karma, herb medicine, Goddess worship and devotion. But beyond all that, it carries the medicine we all need. Deep humility and Love.

Astonishing facts, amazing truths, incredible calclations, and mind-bending theories about the biggest subject of all: the past. present, and future Universe.
When the Universe began, it was smaller than a grain of sand, smaller than the point of a needle, smaller than a cell of your body. Nothing in our daily experience prepares us for such an astronishing fact, yet physicists readily accept this concept as part of the Big Bang theory of the origins of the Universe.
Book Description
