Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

As a glass collecting enthusiast I have read my share of collecting books through the years, and I have to say that this is the most visually appealing and informative books I have ever read. Viking made beatiful and colorful pieces of glass, and Dean Six's book captures the beauty of the glass while putting the pieces in a logical and historical context.

I highly recommend this book not only for the serious Viking collector, but for anyone who collect glass, is interested in history or enjoys a beautiful decorative arts book.

Book Description

Viking longships evolved from one-man canoes of the Scandinavian Stone Age, through wood-built-ships of c. 200 BC into the recognisable longboats of the 4th century AD. From this point, the Viking Longship developed into the pre-eminent raider and trader in the North Sea and Baltic, venturing as far afield as the Mediterranean, North Atlantic and modern-day Russia. Keith Durham uses reconstructions, original sources, translations and archaeological evidence to render a vivid picture of the vessels that dominated the seaways of Scandinavia, founded colonies on Iceland, Greenland and the New World and terrorised the coastlines of northern Europe. Also covered are Norman vessels, including the invasion fleet of William the Conqueror.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know the construction of Viking ships.......2007-08-22

This is a great little book about the details of how Viking ships were constructed. It goes through the history of the development of Viking longships and describes (in great detail) how they were constructed. Thankfully, there is a glossary in the back for us landlubbers. Mr. Durham does a great job of conveying how magnificant these vessels were. The craftsmanship and lore that went into building these longships was, quite simply, amazing. There are numerous detailed drawings and the paintings are quite good (something you can't say for all the books in this series). After reading how these boats were constructed, it is easy to understand how the Vikings were able to be the force that they were. The best indication of this is the Peacock that was discovered in the ship-burial from 1000 AD. Imagine what that Peacock went through to end up in Norway! This book is strictly about how Viking longships were built and does get a bit technical. It is worth reading if you are curious about Vikings and their seafaring ways!

A little guide to understanding the ancient rune letters. Each letter is explained with the help of a runic verse dating from the Viking Age.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nice primer, but disappointing for research........2002-10-30

I found this while searching Amazon for historic reference books on runes. As a primer on Norse runes, itýs OK. As a historic research book, itýs disappointing. Nice art, though.

Most of the book is taken up by a primer on Norse FUTHARK runes, similar to a childýs ABC book. Each of the 24 runes gets a two-page spread with a large illustration of the rune, itýs name in Old Norse and equivalent in modern English, phonetic values, and alternate versions of the rune. On the facing page is some undated, generically Viking-style art and a three-line stanza from an Icelandic rune poem. Example: The rune Is=Ice. Ice is the bark of rivers, the waveýs roof, and the doomed manýs undoing.

In addition to the primer, there are about 14 pages of text, with very little in the way of dated references or material that could be used as a reference for other research. Continental and Anglo-Frisian runes are clearly labeled as beyond the scope of this work. There are some very good line art illustrations of rune stones, although the stones are undated. The book is published in Iceland, and about half of the bibliography is in Icelandic or Swedish. If you are looking for a nice, simple introductory work on Norse runes, this will do. If you are looking for a research/reference book, skip this one, and start with R. I. Page.

3 out of 5 stars Done better elsewhere.......2002-08-29

Mildly amusing and educational, but falls short of the much funnier (and much more informative) "Viking Invader" by Paul Dowswell, a book with the same newspaper concept.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Children.......2000-05-23

Children in the fifth through eighth grades who are studying Vikings would find this book very entertaining. The readings are short, illustrations are plenty and colorful, and the "voice" is usually first person.

The author took great pains to present Viking history, social customs, and every day life in a manner with which children could readily identify. For instance, there are "newspaper ads" for common household needs that are written in "today's" format. News snippets are linked together by general topics.

As a historian and former Norwegian achaeologist, I was delighted to see that historical accuracy was upheld when writing this book.

This book does not intended to make anyone a scholar, but for children first encountering the Vikings, the book cleverly spoons much history into young brains. Furthermore, the newpaper format makes parental reading enjoyable.

This book belongs on any social studies shelf.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but short stories.......2000-04-29

The Viking News is a good book to give to people who don't know anything, or know very little about the vikings, since each story is short, and with out much detail and besides that, it is fun to read.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Illustrations.......2003-04-20

Within a day after getting this book I had finished reading it. The book's strongest point is its illustrations: paintings of what artists thought the Vikings looked like; maps; and photos of Viking artifacts, ruins and habitats.

The last portion of the book consists of excerpts from writings by or about the Norsemen.

The text suffers slightly by being a translation. It implies that Weland the Smith was a real person. I doubt that the author originally intended to give that impression.

I noticed a slight error at one point in the book. The number of doors in Valhalla magically grew from 540 to 550 in just a few pages!

The Vikings are a fascinating subject, and this book does them justice. So if you are interested in the Vikings you will enjoy it and learn much as well.

4 out of 5 stars Vikings: the Colonizers of Europe........2000-08-23

I found this book to throughly enjoyable. I had no idea how much the Vikings impacted European civilization until I read this book. I knew that they came from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark but I did not realise to the extent that they traveled and settled. This book is a must for anyone seeking knowledge of the Vikings Religion, Daily Life, Colonies, and various other aspects. You will find out that these people were not just warriors but people just like you and I.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Review of the Viking American Explorations.......2006-08-04

Many historians continue to claim the Leif Ericson's Vinland wasn't Cape Cod, but the Viking sagas seem to clearly contradict those skepticisms. A cape "that projected northward from the land itself" and the "peninsula's sharp elbow" sound very much like Cape Cod. And it was here that wild grapes grew which has always been the clearest thorn in the attempts to place Vinland farther north.

Cahill details the Norse sagas many references to Vinland. Perhaps most telling is when Bishop Bardson arrived in Greenland, found the Vikings missing and declared they had "turned to the people of Vinland." The author goes on to describe how Giovanni Verrazano would later meet "fair-skinned" Indians. Verrazano would also tell his king of a Norman Villla discovered in what is now Newport, Rhode Island (known as the "Newport Tower"). Described as "round with eight pillars supporting eight arches" it had a lookout tower facing the sea.

The author continues with many intriguing finds that Vikings left along the coast. There is no debate that the Vikings explored and settled America long before Columbus and did so for many years. The details of these travels deserve more careful research and field work.

      Book Description

Though infamous for their violent marauding, Vikings were but one part of the complex Scandinavian culture from which they emerged. This excellent and intimate study goes beyond the rumors of "the fury of the Northmen," into the prosaic realities of the greater Scandinavian community, and is ideal for readers who want to discover the everyday details of living in this dynamic time and place. What were Viking families like? How were slaves treated? Were older people treated well, or regarded with contempt? Exactly how did they manage to travel from Baghdad to Greenland? Author Kirsten Wolf answers all of these questions and many more in this highly readable and informative resource volume, which will be a benefit and pleasure to the student and the general reader alike. For the reader's convenience, the work is organized into chapters covering all aspects life: domestic, economic, intellectual, material, political, recreational, and religious. It includes a historical timeline of Viking history, complementary pictures, illustrations, and maps, and a bibliography.

2 out of 5 stars This is a very biased book........2007-01-18

While I enjoyed reading this book for my research, I was disgusted by the author's constant references to Christianity as a better religon than the pagan traditions of the Vikings. When I engage in historical research, I expect to be presented with facts, not the author's opinions as to which religon is better. The author constantly makes comments such as, "The viking raids were caused by the poor resources of the region, but eventually ceased when Christianity was introduced and the Vikings became more satisfied with their lot in life."

I intend to write a long letter to the publisher about the editor's inability to remove religious commentary from a book concerning the history of a people. I advise serious researchers to locate other sources, as this book is excessively biased.

4 out of 5 stars needs more photos of artifacts.......2006-11-04

The author writes to educate a general audience about Viking society. While the Vikings are certainly remembered, few histories that mention them go into much details about the actual culture. Wolf gives a broad sweep through what is known to specialist historians. We see the cultural affinities between the Vikings in Scandinavia and the societies in Germany and eastern Europe.

The book also describes the visual art. Most of which appears on functional items as decorative emblems. Very applied, as Wolf puts it. The book has several photos of Viking artifacts. Nice, but perhaps some of these should have been in colour. And more of them.

The role of slavery is also examined. Not race-based, as it was in America. But the thrall or chattel slavery practised by the Vikings was arguably just as brutal. The book also points out much that still remains unknown, like their legal system. Little has survived in writing to attest to this.
