and when you finish with *this* atlas ..........2006-07-16
This engaging school 'geography' reference is worth its weight in at least copper, and you can pick one up used for under a dollar. The DK Geography of the World is that rare book that delivers more than it promises.
The book opens with excellent introductions for school and family levels on the physical world, moving continents, climate and vegetation, world population, and the political world before launching into region by region and country by country brief surveys.
Each one contains just enough information to whet a young or inexperienced appetite and - let's just keep this our little secret, shall we? - to toss a quick briefing in the direction of the seasoned traveler headed for parts unknown.
The book aims for accessibility with a certain breezy tone: more than one country is 'tucked just inside the northwest(ern) corner of' its respective region (see the UK and Belorussia).
The DK pays nice interest in the history of each country, frequently noting what a given country was 'part of' before its emergence as a modern nation-state.
About the only bad thing you can say about this quasi-atlas is that it's not the Oxford Atlas of the World. But for 74¢ used + postage, what's the harm in that?
Excellent Edition to Classroom Reference Section.......2000-03-25
As a contained classroom teacher, I am always searching for good reference material for my classroom. This geography would be an excellent edition to my class library. The text is readable for 4th through 6th graders. The illustrations are beautiful, and the maps are accurate. This volume contains a "world" of information that would interest students and be useful for their research.

The publication of this book in 1994 was a milestone in the field of publishing for children and young adults. Working with an international team of historians, the renowned nonfiction publisher Dorling Kindersley used their extensive image library to create a visual chronology of world history, laden with photographs of real artifacts, tools, and art from around the globe, as well as illustrations and photographs of the people who lived in each era.
Summarizing the entire history of civilization seems a daunting task, but the organizational work here is exemplary. Each chapter covers a historical period from several centuries in the earliest times to a 25-year span in recent times. Beginning with a world map, each chapter offers a time line and a double-page spread identifying the major events and developments within five geographic areas: Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania. More specific discussions for these geographic areas follow, along with additional illustrations, maps, and small, specific time lines. Because of the organizational scheme using five world divisions, all areas of the world receive equal treatment. An additional 115-page reference section includes a glossary of terms and a comprehensive index. The Dorling Kindersley History of the World is a welcome addition to the family reference shelf for students from fourth grade through high school. (Ages 9 and older)

fantastic.......2005-03-24
I absolutely love this book. Every page is packed with fascinating information and color photos of real artifacts. I really like the way he ties it all together, giving an overview of the history of the entire world and which events occurred at the same time period. I bought it so I could teach my kids world history. I do think the reading level would be appropriate for a 3rd grader, but unfortunately the print is so small it makes it intimidating for younger kids.
IS THERE A BETTER BOOK THAN THIS ?!.......2003-08-13
Absolutely beautiful, comprehensive world history book - should be in EVERY classroom and home! A record of conflict of course, but chock full of the best that people have done on this planet(art, architecture, science, etc.)- inspiring and exciting. If anyone knows of a better illustrated world history book, please write me! Thank you DK - once again an incredible book.
Absolutely superb........1999-10-13
This is a simply marvelous book, good for all ages. (After all, I am a single adult with no children!) DK publishes a lot of "children's" books which I, as a mature, educated adult, find very useful and fascinating. This one, though, is probably the best of the lot.
DK has done it again!.......1999-09-25
DK Publishing never ceases to hold my interest with colorful and imagiantive formats, and this book is a perfect example. The full color pictures combined with intesting facts make this a great tool for any student of history. As a future teacher and history major, I highly recommend this book to students of all ages!
If you ever wondered "when was that?" you need this book!.......1999-01-08
DK has mastered the art of presenting facts in a way that mesmerizes both young and old. This book is a resource you will return to time and again. This book goes beyond most school texts by giving a side by side timeline of the entire globe on one page. Not just for kids; this book would be valuable to anyone wanting an easy to read timeline of world history. The illustrations and photographs are perfect compliments to the text. It could easily double as a coffee table book, and would make a great gift for youth and teens.

Like a visit to a single museum that happens to house all the major works from all the major movements in art, architecture, and visual and decorative arts, this hefty tome lives up to its title. From pre-history to present day, cave paintings to computer art, it delivers on its promise to bring together "art from every age and from every corner of the world." In 720 pages and more than 2,200 color illustrations, this includes, in addition to the traditional disciplines, fashion, advertisement, performance art and theater, and computer-generated virtual art. Readers can research, peruse, study, or simply flip through the history of art, arranged geographically and chronologically and placed in social and historical context. Call-out boxes focus on particularly important features of the period, culture, or environment under examination, and summary timelines highlight whole chapters in a few pages and break up running text on each page. This makes for busy pages, chock-full of textual and visual information, but if anyone can successfully present too much information, it's Dorling Kindersley. There's even a section on the aesthetic importance of nouvelle cuisine, a late 20th century style of preparing and presenting food. You can't get that in Gardner's.
Book Description
One of the most comprehensive art reference works ever produced - an absorbing, definitive, and up-to-the-minute account of the history of world art from prehistory to the dawn of the 21st century.
Customer Reviews:
If you only own one book about art . . ........2006-02-19
If you could only own one book about art, this book should be it. The reproductions are true, the writing insightful, and the coverage extensive. All significant periods in art history are covered, including non-western, and the book is more than just about art, but about history, as well. I found some fascinating tidbits that I didn't know before: the Emporer Claudius proposed to the Roman Senate that Christianity be officially recognized (the Senate refused); the Chinese practiced a form of Cubism centuries before Picasso and Braque; archeologists date the arrival of Christianity in areas by how the dead were buried (all pretty cool stuff). This is one of those books that is worth rereading with the expectation of greater enjoyment the second time around.
A Definitive & Intriguing Guide.......2003-01-13
Art attracts us only by what it reveals of our most secret self.
- Jean-Luc Godard
If you are interested in following the evolution of art through the ages, you will find this to be lavish and comprehensive. The book begins with a question. "What is Art Today?"
Erich Steingraber explains how we can no longer answer this question unequivocally. Art has undergone a radical change from art in the past. This guide explores all these aspects and shows the changes, page by page.
Features Include:
2,200 Color Illustrations, photographs and drawings
World History of Art
Everything from Prehistoric cave paintings to Post-Modernism and Present-Day computer art
A Chronological Overview in each chapter
Significant Movements in Art
Analyses of key works
Insight into artist techniques
Contents:
1. Prehistoric and Ancient Art
In this section there is a chart of old world Neolithic ceramic forms. Then you can find pictures of Egyptian jewelry and discussions about famous tombart. In the Hellenic and Italic Civilizations you will find page after page of Greek and Italic Art. The elongated figures in some pictures look like modern art and strangely do look similar to figures sculpted by the 20th century Italian sculptor Giacometti. The authors explain why temple architecture in Italy developed differently from Greek architecture. I was fascinated by the "Nile Landscape" on page 92 because I love mosaics. If you have been to the Louvre, Paris, you will recognize "The Victory of Samothrace."
2. The Ancient World from the Roman Empire to the Fourth Crusade
Then you can delve into the rather serious art of the Roman Empire. Barbarian Art? Yes, but it is only loosely describing a broad range of people and art styles that existed alongside the "civilized" cultures of the Mediterranean, China and the Near East.
Byzantine Art, Persian & Islamic Art, India and the Far East and the Classical Art of sub-Saharan Africa complete this section. I enjoyed seeing the intricacy of the "rock crystal jug with bird decoration and inscription" from AD992. The transparent and colorless quartz was one of the most sought-after semiprecious materials and you will realize why.
3. From the Great Cities of Europe to the Four Corners of the World
This section really brought back memories. The Notre-Dame Cathedral is probably the most beautiful cathedral I've ever visited. They have a full-color picture on more than half a page. It is truly even more magnificent when you see it in person.
In the Early Renaissance and High Renaissance they feature:
Andrea Mantegna: "Oculus of the Camera Picta" - 1473; fresco. Detailed analyses is included with a variety of close-up "shots."
Michelangelo: "Creation of Adam" from the vault of the Sistine Chapel
In the 17th Century: The Age of Spectacle we find pictures of Giuseppe Arcimboldo's art. This section really focuses more on sculpture and architecture.
The Splendors of the 18th Century includes a delightful array of tapestry from the Palace of Versailles and Musee du Louvre, Paris.
The art of Asia is in such contrast with zen gardens and painted scrolls depicting fierce deities.
Pre-Columbian Art has a small section and focuses more on vases, temples, goldwork. and pyramids.
4. Art, Commerce & Industry
Neoclassicism - inspired by the excavations of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Romanticism - You have to see the exquisite piece called "Morning" by German artist Philipp Otto Runge who took refuge in the myth of childhood.
Orientalism - After the British expansion in India, curiosity about these lands influenced European taste and we see elements of the exotic permeating trends in literature, music and the visual arts throughout the 19th century.
Official Art
This was the name given to a style of paintings that flourished in Europe in the second half of the 19th century. They feature:
The Birth of Venus, 1862
Flaming June
The Death of Cleopatra, 1874
The Creation of the Metropolis
This chapter will make you want to go traveling just to see this architecture in person. Pleasure Gardens, castles and bridges are featured.
Art, Technology & Industry - focuses on printing and photographic techniques.
Furnishings & Fashions - One of my favorite chapters as they include pictures of the interior of castles and a picture of Neuschwanstein Castle.
The European Influence - Artistic styles were imitated and adapted in the colonies. Explanations of Theatre design, architecture, American Classicism and Tiffany Glass.
5. A Crisis of Tradition & The Birthplace of Contemporary Art
The Birth of Realism - Sunlight streams into some of these pictures and yet some show the contrast in the harsh realities of life.
The Impressionists - Claude Monet and Renoir. Art reaches a delicate beauty.
Post-Impressionism - Exquisite paintings by Gustave Moreau
The Modern Style - Detailed information about Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss"
Edvard Munch really worries me, but who could forget "The Scream."
Artistic Cultures of sub-Saharan Africa - Statues
Artistic Cultures of the Pacific - Statues
6. Art of the 20th Century
Expressionism & Fauvism
The Great Avant-garde Movements
The New Architecture
Art & Politics
Art in the Postwar Period
The New Avant-garde & Postmodernism
Architecture in the Second Half of the 20th Century
Toward a New Century - Computer art, fashion, consumer goods, publicity, architecture and movies
"This is not a cold, scholarly history of art. What we are trying to do is to share with the reader our love of art, to reflect on its past splendor, its present vitality, and its future potential." -Art, A World History
I think they succeeded. I was mesmerized for hours!

Great summary for beginning art lovers.......1998-12-21
I was given this book as a gift by a friend who knew I was interested in learning more about art. It is a wonderful, overall introduction to the subject. It is easy and interesting reading with 1000's of pictures. I enjoy it in short segments when I wish to be taken to another place.

Great Atlas, Poor Binding.......2006-01-06
I bought this atlas for my husband. He's really into geography and such, and he really likes the atlas. My only complaint is that they are poorly bound. I bought it for him for Christmas and by the end of Christmas day the whole back cover had separated from the main binding. I sent it back and got another one, and when I first opened it and looked at it, the same thing was already happening to it, and we hadn't even used it! We decided to keep it anyway since it wasn't hurting anything really and he really enjoys reading it. Just watch out for that problem as it seems unlikely that we would get the only two books that were falling apart in that manner. Also, he said that in the first one we got, some of the maps were right across the center of two pages, so you couldn't see the part that was down in the center where it goes into the binding. In the second one we got it wasn't as severe.
History Written from the Anglo-American Perspective.......2005-12-03
I was actually anticipating something better. There are, of course, some minor flaws and discrepancies, I'm sure they'll all be rectified in the next edition. But there are also many great flops and extremely biased historical expositions, mostly about 20th century issues -whitewashing U.S. and the West, denigrating Cold War opponents, partiality about certain southeastern Europe factions, omitting some of the most important historical carnages(namely, the Armenian genocide and other many atrocious events which took place around world. Prepared by a majorty English team and a general editor, this book will fall short of your expectations and not satisfy you, especially about the the European history part of which I consider the number of maps insufficient and not too detailed as it should be.
Rue the day I bought this atlas. They used to do better than this. Don't spend your precious money on this one if you're really searching out for something good.
Superb integration of pics, timelines, data and maps all in one book!.......2005-10-01
To understand the histories of separate countries, one has to put it in the context of the whole world. And this book is really good by having two parts: Part 1 (over 100 pages) is devoted to the holistic presentation of the evolution of the history of the whole world, whereby the reader can understand the interaction between countries and conduct interesting comparisons and contrasts between them on the same timeline. Part 2 is devoted to the evolution of the histories of separate regions. When one combines the two parts in one's mind, one's interpretation of the world history can never be the same!
History of humankind is full of politics, arts, science, achievements and frailty here and there, now and then. This book, with its superb combination of different data formats, can really give one the primal sense of wonder generated from the history made by human beings.
If you think history is fun and exiting, your view will be confirmed by this book. If you think history is no fun and no excitement, you will have a second thought after reading this gigantic book!
Awesome book!.......2005-08-09
This book is absolutely fabulous. It contains a lot of great information and does a great job of integrating history and geography.

James Bond fans, take note: this is a revised edition of a best-seller on the superspy created in colalboration with EON Productions, producer of his films, and has been updated to add his most recent movies. Newcomers as well as avid fans receive an oversized presentation which covers all his exciting missions, pairing plot with color photos throughout and offering new narrative scenes from his newest adventures. An updated James Bond filmography adds to the information. Just a book on James Bond, not behind the scenes.......2006-12-23
DK Publishing is a great source for studying up on new topics and collectors items, so it treats James Bond just like that. Its almost like, "Here is James Bond dressed in a tux. Notice how he carries a Walther PPK. He drinks vodka martinis." This is great if you want to know about the character of Bond, but I find that only scratching the surface. If you want to know anything about the making of the films from writing the script and casting to how they did the stunts and special effects, this book is not the book for you.
Great Christmas Gift via James Bond 007.......2006-11-25
The Minute I saw this book I thought that this would make a great Christmas gift for some James Bond fan out there. You really have to see the insides of this book to see what I am talking about. Every page is filled with color photographs, drawings and diagrams from all 21 James Bond film. It is a beautiful looking book from cover to cover. I thought they covered enough on CASINO ROYALE without giving too much away. In fact they do a very good job with CASINO ROYALE. Some kid or a really big kid is going to love this book.
GORGEOUS EXPANDED EDITION.......2006-11-06
DK books has made the great even better with their revised edition of "James Bond: The Secret World of 007". Previously released in 2000, this latest edition expands to include the two most recent Bond Thrillers "Die Another Day" and the upcoming "Casino Royale". As with all of DK's books, it is highlighted by fantastic photography from beginning to end and presented in an over-sized hardcover format with dust jacket, perfectly suited for the coffee table.
The book start out with the perfunctory introduction to the character and his rich history including that distinctive "Bond look" , a section on "Q" the master gadget maker, as well as a look at the various bond women such as May Day, Elektra King, and Domino.
Next the book gets into each of the Bond missions, i.e, the films, beginning with Dr. No. You'll go inside the plot of each film and the lair of each villain to meet the evil masterminds as well as their various henchman and attractive women. You'll relive the most harrowing moments of each film and see the tools that Bond applied to save the day. These sections feature numerous photos from each film as well as artistic renderings of things such as Dr. No's Crab Key lair which takes the reader through a step-by-step replay of Bond's ingenious escape.
The Goldfinger section gets you up close and personal inside Bond's ride, the Aston Martin DB5 with it's pop-out machine guns, smoke emitting exhaust pipes, and ejector seat. Diamonds are Forever introduces us to the deadly assassins Wint & Kidd as well as a pair of gorgeous ladies Plenty O'Toole and Tiffany Case as the arch-villain Blofeld returns. The Spy Who Loved Me introduces us to one of the most popular Bond villains the giant, steel-toothed Jaws who gets a sizeable section in the book.
While Bond enthusiasts will know all the details already, casual fans will really eat up this book and it's a simply gorgeous collectible. There are a couple of problems, though. One, is that you barely see Sean Connery, Roger Moore, or even Timothy Dalton anywhere in the book. The only Bond you really see is Pierce Brosnan up until the back section that lists each films credits. The other slight is that there isn't much coverage on Casino Royale but DK has that solved with their new book "Bond on Set" devoted to the latest Bond Film. Two minor things and not enough for me not to highly recommend this book.
Reviewed by Tim Janson
Unessential Edition for the Twenty first Century.......2006-10-25
This edition of "James Bond: The Secret World of 007" is rather superfluous. The produces of CASINO ROYALE have indicated that this film is going to be a new beginning for James Bond. If so, the 20 James Bond films in the series that preceded CASINO ROYALE really have no continuity in relation to this film. Therefore an edition dedicated solely to this film would have been more appropriate. Just end it with the sections in addendum to DIE ANOTHER DAY. The James Bond based in the Twentieth Century had a good run.

great book for kids.......2002-08-20
This is an excellent book for children to learn more about firefighting--both about the history and modern techniques and equipment. It's detailed without being overly graphic. And as with all DK books, it's chockful of beautiful photographs that clearly show what words cannot describe.
Of particular interest are the case studies of various famous fires (mostly in the U.S.) throughout history, their causes, the destruction wreaked, and effects on firefighting efforts. This is especially interesting in the context of the development of firefighting techniques as we get to see just how much has had to happen to get to where we are today--and in some cases, how much further we have to go.

Great Intro to WWII for Kids!.......2004-04-27
Another good book in the Eyewitness Series. This book does a good job of condensing the vast amount of information available on WWII and, as usual, the pictures tell the story in an interesting way for children. We collect Eyewitness Books and my kids were so glad to see this book and the others on WWI, the Civil War and the American Revolution.

Customer Reviews:
Great idea, poor execution.......2006-01-23
This was a wondeful idea -- a day-by-day chronicle of historical events. Unfortunately, the book is does not live up to the promise, in two ways.
First, there are numerous places where the entries are misleading or just plain WRONG. For instance, the USS NEW JERSEY was **not** "the largest battleship ever built." [Dec. 7] French "general" -- by which they mean emperor -- Napoleon Bonaparte did **not* occupy "Berlin, Germany," as there was no Germany at the time. Berlin was the capital of Prussia. [Oct. 27] In addition to a bunch of howlers like these, there are numerous other places where the information is incomplete or misleading as well.
Second, the book is riddled with typos, missing words, inconsistencies, weird phrasings, etc.. Ex: Is it "von Beethoven" or "van Beethoven"? "Two British divisions, half of them composed of Indian troops" means one Indian division, right? Or does it mean two divisions, each of which were half-Indian?
I'm forced to conclude that the book wasn't proofread.
Overall, it's an interesting effort, but it's a real shame it wasn't done competently.

The Beatles: 10 Years that Shook the World is an unrivalled day-by-day account of the band that changed the face of music, by the world's greatest rock writers and key personalities of the era. The book chronicles the private and public events that revolutionized the music world, led to Beatlemania, and culminated in the Beatles' dramatic split. The foreword is written by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.

Beautifully Presented!.......2007-04-30
This book is gorgeous in it's lay out and presentation. The articles are arranged in a magazine style format with a very imaginative what?,where?.when?, tag at the top of each article. I must say that some of these articles were written by some of the best Beatles writers and authorities in the world like,Hunter Davies,Barry Miles, Mark Lewisohn, and Ian Macdonald, to name but a few. However, some seem to be written by MOJO staff writers who's knowledge of the Beatles would fit in a thimble. These particular authors had to relie on previously written books to assimilate their info.,so for the M.B.E. ceremony you get that stupid story about the boys smoking a joint in the palace bathroom before meeting the queen. (probably taken from Lennon Remembers which should have been retitled,Lennon is Angry this Week and Wants to Make Up a Bunch of Shock Stories.) A few of these ridiculous Beatles folk lore tales are retold in this book because the young staff writers at MOJO simply didn't know better. Seriously, with the drug penalties of 1965, would the boys have risked their entire career and reputation for a spliff in the QUEEN'S bathroom?
I did love the record reviews of each album, complete with vintage music reviews and commentary from Beatle fans in the music biz. Unfortunately the reviews of the earlier albums were given to those young staff writters again,(and they wouldn't know a Beatles album from a Cowsills album apparently.) It would have been nice if the reviewer for Beatles for Sale had taken the time to find out who is singing on Kansas City, instead of saying, "And WHOEVER is singing on Kansas City sounds great." Why were people like this allowed to write in the first place?
Also some of the picture captions are wrong. One of John and Paul is off by 3 years! (ouch) If I sound annoyingly anal,it's because I am anal when it comes to the Beatles. I've studied and read everything about them and because of this,I'm finding that I seem to know more than a lot of people who are making money writing about them. I always want to fix the many mistakes I find, and they are in every book except the ones by real experts like the fine writers I mentioned before.
Don't misunderstand, the wonderful things in this book far outweigh the anoying mistakes. In fact Ten Years... reminds me of the Beatles Anthology so it is definetly one of those must haves for the library. The pictures are absolutely gorgeous and almost all of them rare. The articles are facinating because they don't just retell the same story but they dig deeper, revealing unknown facts. They are written in a way that makes them seem fresh.
Also I really enjoyed the contributions from famous Beatles photographers with some of their most beautiful photos of the boys, and interesting anecdotes about working with them. You'll find everything here; the music, the mania, the private lives, and the personalities of the four who did indeed shake the world and changed our culture forever.
10 minutes that shook my life........2007-03-22
once youve read one story you have got to read them all, they go into detail about john and paul and its just great. theres stories for just about everything.
the pictures are clear and amazing, most, if not all of them you cannot find on the internet, this book is gigantic, almost the size of text books, which makes the pictures even more amazing.
you are not a beatles fan unless you have this book.
Top Mops.......2007-02-15
Yes you have heard the stories before, and you have even seen most of the picutres, but the way they have been put together still makes it worth while. It's like having all MOJO articles on the fabs in one book, and hey! maybe it's exactly what it is? They should have called it Chronology!
It's just dazzling!.......2007-01-19
This book is simply a delight that will hopefully introduce the nowadays young generation to the Beatles' unparalleled social and musical impact they have had on the world. I have always believed that the Beatles have set new standards in music as they imposed themselves as cultural icons in the sixties. I bet any Beatles fan would be joyful over the arrival of this book. I spent hours reading it, watching its photos, lovingly turning each page, smiling, laughing or weeping over so many previously unseen fantastic photos and background information to some of their songs and albums. I have many Beatle books at home but this one beats all of them in the detailed information provided, style and text. Some of the photos have never been released before. Besides, the material is extensive and professionally ellaborated. This book is a great work and I recommend it especially for the Beatle fans and connaisseurs. I'm sure everyone will love this book. The minute this book has been published, the timeless and greatest band of all times - The Beatles - are shocking the world, again!
Gave as a gift but..........2007-01-10
Went back and bought one for myself. DK always publishes excellent material, and their treatment of the Fab Four is up to their usual high standards. There are many, many books on the Beatles, but this is one of the ones you really should own.

Excellent reference!.......2004-01-16
This book really brought World War I to life. I was surprised at how little I really knew about this war. This may be billed as a kid's book, but people of all ages will enjoy it. It's a great source for learning a lot about the war in a short period of time. The entire Eyewitness series is worth checking out.
