Decent book but needs more pictures.......2006-04-11

I had this as my main text for a class at Foothill college and it was a relatively easy read if you use the glossary. Their could have been more pictures of the items discussed and I would recommend to any teacher thinking of using this book to gather some more higher quality pictures of the items discussed for the student to look at.

Not like most college textbooks.......2000-05-16

I'm currently a student and i'm taking an Introducion to Archaeology course because I've always been interested in learning a little bit about archaeology. This is the book that I have to use for my class and most of the time I dread having to read the books in any of my classes, but this book is an exception. Even if I wasn't taking the course in college, I would enjoy reading this book.

It gives you an overview of what archaeologists do for a living and tells of many excavations and other archaeological discoveries. Unlike most textbooks, it not only gives definitions and gives information about the subject, but it tells stories that will interest you and actually make you want to read the book for a change.

If you want to read about what archaeology is about, I recommend reading this book. It has a lot of good information and it's interesting.

A Primary Source History Book.......2000-09-09

Most history books are dull. Not this one!

I came across this book at a garage sale. I thought it might be useful to get ideas for History Day topics for my kids. I found it so interesting and well written that I read it cover to cover.

The reader learns history the way historians do-using primary sources. The book shows how to analyze letters, speeches, newspaper articles, maps, advertisements, statistical data, court records, and first person accounts. This is not a comprehensive history book, but rather a historical sampling of 15 topics. Some of the topics are "Conceptualizing the Modern World (1500s)", "The Confucian Family (1600-1800)", Islamic Fundamentalism and Renewal in West Africa (ca.1775-1820)", and "Globalism and Tribalism: Challenges to the Contemporary Nation-State (1980's-1990s)".

The Authors give a brief background, questions to consider, and suggestions to help the reader analyze the primary sources. I would strongly recommend this book to advanced placement high school or college level history teachers. It teaches critical thinking in a way rarely found in history texts.

This book provided a detailed account of their journey to each state and what God revealed to them. I found it encouraging and thought provoking as this took place a couple years ago...
Each state received an impartation of what God wants from his people. I am passing the book along to others to read.

This book is for the serious,mature Christian who wants to see revival and significant change in this country.The amount of research that went into the production of this book is incredible. Dutch Sheets and Chuck Pierce base their book on solid biblical knowledge,wisdom and have combined it with incredible revelation on what the Holy Spirit is saying to the people of this country This book has really helped me go to the next level in God and has also stirred in me a desire to see this country turn back to God.

The `Mythic Path' provides readers and seekers the ability throughout 12 weeks to contact their mythic path, to heal their childhood wounds, to create a personal creation myth and connect with their inner selves. "Personal mythology is but the flower on the bush" and it is this flower that one is asked to explore. The book is composed of five stages where the reader is asked to identify their personal myth using elements of the Socratic thesis, the second stage where they identify their opposing conflicting myth, a third stage of synthesis, the fourth stage of testing the `hypothesis' and the fifth stage where the myth is woven into everyday life and action.

The stages and the program provides all the necessary tools to discover these inner personal myths through dreams and inner images, and through careful instructions on how to cultivate these myths and understand them. The incredible degree to which the book walks one through the process, the insight into ancient Greek mythmaking is a real value for anyone searching for meaning in life and hoping to discover themselves. This is an immensely successful and all encompassing program and it should be embarked upon with care and after a period of reflection of what commitments it entails, but surely it provides many answers for people feeling lost or empty, and even for those who feel they have all the answers.

This book contends that we all have an inner mythology working. It tells us that we might benefit from a quiet and sacred appraisal of outdated notions we feed ourselves, perhaps unknowingly. This concept is a welcomed relief in our daily lives amid loud debates and fistfights, murder in the streets, standardized testing, high oil prices, racism, too much trash in our dumps (literally and figuratively), harsh rap music, and a hundred other tragedies and annoyances.

Other authors have called this notion of self-inflicted mythology manifesting as "self talk" that can be positive or negative. The negative includes such ideas as -- "Real men don't wear pink," "Women can't be leaders," and "I'll never be able to find a good job that I like." Most people seem to live according to a pattern developed over the years of their lives and experiences, often tagged as a unique personal behavior set, or overall personality in psychological terms. Some believe that this set cannot be changed after a certain age, if ever. Many people state, "That's just me," or "I'm set in my ways," and feel that they cannot change their personal patterns of living. In fact, many are not even aware of their behavior patterns. These people live a rather unexamined life. They do not live on purpose; they live at random. The authors of this book demonstrate that such randomness may not be random and does not need to be true. In fact, it is not true in anyone's case.

Everyone lives by some pattern and system of beliefs, learned and developed with varying degrees of accuracy and truth in each belief or myth. Myths can be true or false. A personal mythology is a set of beliefs and motives that operate under the surface of the mind, like the wizard behind the curtain in Oz. The set actually guides one's choices throughout life. If unknown and/or unexamined or if an individual is not even aware of the existence of belief systems, then their choices are far fewer in any circumstance. Feinstein and Krippner show that the underlying belief system (mythology) should be a guiding tool for our conscious use and not a secret mastermind. Moreover, the tool should be the most up to date and effective as possible for each one of us. Fairy tales and horror stories learned in childhood can be left behind for a new, effective truth.

First, one must discover the specific mythology that one is using as a guidance system. "The Mythic Path" offers a systematic approach for effectively doing so in well-organized and very easy exercises. The authors call this a treasure hunt. Even if the treasure turns out to be full of negative messages, there is treasure in the discovery of the myths imposed on one by one's family of origin and culture, because once discovered, the negatives can be replaced with more- effective beliefs. This includes working toward emotional healing and cognitive reframing for a better-working belief system.

This Third Edition of "The Mythic Path" is an update of about 30-years of wok, providing a five-step, twelve-week workbook for ritual observations that is pleasant, freeing, and uplifting. It also contains a set of energy exercises, or energy psychology activities, set on a more spiritual level - even a kind of religious level; these can be either added or ignored. The energy exercises include such simple techniques as acupressure paired with thinking activities. The work overall is not Hindu, although there are elements of that system included. It is not Christian, although there are some concepts included that are familiar to Christians. There are elements of the work of psychologist Carl Jung and mythologist Joseph Campbell as well. There are concepts and wisdom from global systems of many kinds. Therefore, this book can be useful to anyone of any faith, or none. The book seems to have a wide application, because it combines professional experience in many specialties of psychology, reframing, healing, philosophy, shamanism, Chinese medicine, and mythology. In reading the book, I found that I could gather what I needed, leave out what I did not, and have an effective program for my unique self.

what DO we think and believe about ourselves, our place in the world, and the world around us? we have the beliefs, they influence us in more ways every day than we probably realize, but rarely take a look at what they really are. this book is an exploration into the mythology of individuals, complete with exercises and methodologies. if you really want to know and are ready to look, and as a result change and free yourself from old unconscious beliefs, this book might well be a great place to start.

I have been fossil hunting for a number of years, and there is nothing quite like the feeling of being the first person to lay your eyes on something that has been buried for millions of years. Being out in the field, with the sun on your back, and dirt under your fingernails, digging away at the rock where just a few feet down maybe a new species of trilobite unknown to science is an exhilarating sensation; it is a true adventure that is still accessible to most people young and old. This is a great book that will show you where you can go out and have these types of experiences for yourself. In Discovering Fossils authors Frank Garcia and Donald Miller teach you how to look for fossils, where to go to search for yourself, and the background information about what types of things you might find. This is a great book for those willing to get down and dirty in their search for fossil treasures.

This book has very accurate illustrations. It is very helpful for people who are interested in fossils, and everything that has to do with collecting them. It is easy to understand, and interesting to read over and over.

Frank Garcia pierces the veil of paleontology and brings you right down to the surface of your own dig.

This book is the best fossil reference book for the casual collector as well as a great addition to any science or teacher's library where geology and-or paleontology are included.

Written in a very down-to-earth style, the book walks you step-by-step through the basics of why fossils exist, where you will find them, how to properly (and safely) collect them and what to do when you get them home or back to the classroom.

Any family that includes fossil-hunting in their vacation, home-school or travel plans should pack this book along for the added benefit of the wide range of fossils identified within.

Any teacher who brings students to potential fossil or geology sites on field trips should include readings from this book BEFORE heading out as well as keeping it handy while in the field.

There's enough packed into this book that every school library science section should include this volume if budgets restrict purchases.

It's a great gift for the budding fossil collector and an excellent addition to a serious collector's library.

The soft, but protected cover, makes it safe to handle in the field.

Take my advice - purchase two: one for the field and one for the desk or prep table.

A very good guide book to get started in collecting fossils. Great advice on equipment, locations and methods for collecting. The illustrations of typical specimens are extremely helpful in identifying finds. Mr Garcia writes with a great wit and a genuine love of science. His matter of fact story telling coupled with the excitement of discovery makes it obvious that to him, science is a verb.

Teaching Critical Thinking? Not........2002-10-03

In my opinion, the authors should introduce evidence in The Evidence rather than making bold, uncorroborated statements in Questions to Consider (thus tainting the evidence with bias); however the authors are prone to guiding the reader to a pre-chosen conclusion. This, to me, is unconscionable in a book purported to help students become critical thinkers. The authors apparently use a different definition for "critical thinker" than I am familiar with. In truth, the book intends to be censor morum, teaching the student to become a politically-correct thinker.

I loved reading The Evidence but I can really do without the editorializing in the other sections of each chapter. Allow the student to come to his own conclusions, I say. Unfortunately (or fortunately, rather) not all textbooks are equal.
