Book Description

By the #1 New York Times bestselling author Kevin Trudeau comes the last diet you will ever need. Imagine, you will lose at least 30 pounds in 30 days...with no hunger...no exercise...and no surgery!

An absolute cure for obesity was discovered almost fifty years ago by a British medical doctor. Tens of thousands of people used this simple, inexpensive, safe medical treatment and achieved miraculous, fast, and permanent weight loss. Stubborn area fat deposits melted away. Body reshaping of the hips, thighs, buttocks, and waist was so dramatic it appeared as if the patients received liposuction! Amazingly, this medical breakthrough has been debunked, discredited, and suppressed by the American Medical Association, the Food and Drug Administration, and other medical establishments throughout the world. Now, for the first time in fifty years, this revolutionary breakthrough discovery, which permanently cures the condition of obesity, is being released to the public.

The main problems that overweight people deal with are massive, intense, constant physical hunger; food cravings and uncontrollable urges to eat when not hungry; low metabolism; and an abnormally high amount of fat stored in stubborn secure problem areas such as the hips, thighs, buttocks, and waist. This "weight loss cure protocol" has been proven to be virtually 100% successful in correcting these conditions, thus curing the individual of obesity for life! Read the fascinating true story of how this discovery was made and, more importantly, how this miracle weight loss breakthrough has been hidden from the public so that drug companies can make billions of dollars selling their expensive drug treatments and surgical procedures for obesity. You'll be amazed to read how the food manufacturers actually have a financial incentive to make you fat! This is the book that answers all the questions about why people today are continually getting fatter and fatter. The good news is this book gives you the cure that can solve your overweight condition once and for all.

1 out of 5 stars Loose weight by loosing money in your wallet.......2007-10-18

I was very disappointed to discover a book I had watched discussed on TV and had high hopes for was really full of unrealistic things to do to loose weight. There are many really great books and diets out there. This is not one to waiste your money on.

1 out of 5 stars This book was written with other intentions.......2007-10-18

When first starting to read this book I thought that something was wrong with the writer and why someone did not catch the fact that he kept repeating himself just a few sentences or paragraphs apart. It seems like he was trying to brainwash you and make certain words and phrases stick in your mind. Then as I and others I know who have read the book believe that this book was written and is being used for a political point of view on several sectors of business rather than try to help or offer help in ones weight loss struggle.

Very disappointed and will never buy another book by this author

2 out of 5 stars Weight Loss Cure not really obtainable.......2007-10-18

I guess I took my chances in buying a book entitled "The Weight Loss Cure", but I have to say I was quite disappointed. Even before I made it to the "cure" part. It was very redundant. It seemed like there wasn't much to say so the author just kept repeating the same thing over and over. The "Cure", is not really obtainable for anyone I know. You would have to either be a doctor, or work for a doctor to do what you are suppose to do the obtain the cure. A little unrealistic for the average overweight American just looking for some help. I definately will not be pursuing this "cure".

1 out of 5 stars The Weight Loss Cure.......2007-10-17

The Weight Loss Cure They Don't Want You to Know About

The author is a nut case with no medical credentials whatsoever. He says to take NO prescription drugs: NONE. He says that all prescription drugs are proven 100% to cause illness. (p. 90)

The list of idiotic suggestions/commands goes on and on.

1 out of 5 stars Thank you reviewers...........2007-10-17

This is not a review, this is a thank you to the reviewers... Saturday morning with coffee in hand, I watched this infomercial. My friend swears by one of this other books... but I never buy off infomericals, but I decided instead to go online and check it out... Everyone has saved me cash. I will not purchase this book.

Anytime an infomercial witholds key information to entice a purchase is a warning flag to me, which is why I came to Amazon (which I LOVE) and saw the two stars and 300+ reviews.

Its no consolation to the people who spent the money, but my thanks anyway for saving me from the misery of this book.

Book Description

Lots of people enjoy making or buying treats for their pets, but wouldn't it be wonderful to cook a real meal for the four-legged member of the household? Quirky yet practical, these cookbooks provide recipes that are nutritionally balanced and veterinarian-approved. They even include sections on "tandem" recipes - recipes for humans that, with slight modifications, can also be served to pets.

REAL FOOD FOR DOGS is written by Arden Moore, the first non-veterinarian to write the pet column for Prevention magazine.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Vital information missing.......2007-10-15

To feed your pet healthy food you need to know the calories and the portions. To cook a sufficient amount, you need to know the number of sized servings per recipe. This book gives none of this vital information.

4 out of 5 stars Great recipes.......2007-10-01

Good alternative meals for dogs, with ingredients that you already probably have in the fridge. Also has great treat ideas that I didn't have in another treat cookbook.

4 out of 5 stars Fun book.......2007-09-26

This book has great dog treat ideas and a fun format. The recipes are unusual and very simple. I was disappointed that there weren't more recipes for everyday dog food, though. This book is more for special-occasion food.

3 out of 5 stars Good beginner's book. Not for the long haul.......2007-09-18

I picked this up on a whim just after I adopted my dog. I've been feeding my cats a homemade diet using Feline Future for years now. This is a very cute book. A very fun book. But it is NOT a very healthy book. It advocates a lot of highly processed ingredients. Refined white rice and refined white bread. Corn meal. These are not good for your dog.

It says nothing about whole, fresh, organic ingredients. Vitamins. Nutrients.

If you're looking to get started, this book is a good one for beginners. Although some of the recipes are far too ingredient heavy.

2 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT MY VET RECOMMENDS.......2007-07-13

I bought this book because I was scared to death to buy any more dog food from the stores after the poisoned stuff showed up from CHINA...which is a bad place to get ANY food from.
I showed it to my vet. He confirmed what I already felt after reading it...it is NOT a good book to feed your dog from on a regular basis. It is ok for an occasional cooked meal; but not for regular consumption. The recipes do not contain wholesome ingredients, and do contain salt and other things not good, and are too fattening. The treat section is good. I made some treats from the book and my dogs loved them. I made one of the meal recipes and only one of my dogs spit it on the floor...but she spits EVERYTHING on the floor if it isn't to her liking, and being a Shih-Tzu, NOTHING is to her liking, lol.
Anyway, it is an OK book for an occasional cooked meal treat or for making your own treats, but not healthy to give your dog on a regular basis....according to a Vet with degrees lining his walls.

Book Description

The bestselling author of The Botany of Desire explores the ecology of eating to unveil why we consume what we consume in the twenty-first century

"What should we have for dinner?" To one degree or another this simple question assails any creature faced with a wide choice of things to eat. Anthropologists call it the omnivore's dilemma. Choosing from among the countless potential foods nature offers, humans have had to learn what is safe, and what isn't-which mushrooms should be avoided, for example, and which berries we can enjoy. Today, as America confronts what can only be described as a national eating disorder, the omnivore's dilemma has returned with an atavistic vengeance. The cornucopia of the modern American supermarket and fast-food outlet has thrown us back on a bewildering landscape where we once again have to worry about which of those tasty-looking morsels might kill us. At the same time we're realizing that our food choices also have profound implications for the health of our environment. The Omnivore's Dilemma is bestselling author Michael Pollan's brilliant and eye-opening exploration of these little-known but vitally important dimensions of eating in America.

Pollan has divided The Omnivore's Dilemma into three parts, one for each of the food chains that sustain us: industrialized food, alternative or "organic" food, and food people obtain by dint of their own hunting, gathering, or gardening. Pollan follows each food chain literally from the ground up to the table, emphasizing our dynamic coevolutionary relationship with the species we depend on. He concludes each section by sitting down to a meal--at McDonald's, at home with his family sharing a dinner from Whole Foods, and in a revolutionary "beyond organic" farm in Virginia. For each meal he traces the provenance of everything consumed, revealing the hidden components we unwittingly ingest and explaining how our taste for particular foods reflects our environmental and biological inheritance.

We are indeed what we eat-and what we eat remakes the world. A society of voracious and increasingly confused omnivores, we are just beginning to recognize the profound consequences of the simplest everyday food choices, both for ourselves and for the natural world. The Omnivore's Dilemma is a long-overdue book and one that will become known for bringing a completely fresh perspective to a question as ordinary and yet momentous as What shall we have for dinner?

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Important, but needed more editing.......2007-10-18

The Omnivore's Dilemma is an often-quoted book, and for good reason. Pollan does a very impressive job gathering mountains of information about the American (and to an extent, world) food chain. He divides the book into three sections, devoted to the "industrial" chain, the products of which you'll see in your average supermarket; the "organic" food chain, represented on one end by WholeFoods, and Joel Salatin's Polyface farm in Virginia on the other; the "hunted-gathered" chain is the last one. The surprise here is that WholeFoods fare is "industrial organic" which is at the moment only slightly better than "industrial". The ideal is seen in the Polyface farm, an enlightened place where nature's cycles are respected and harnessed. The last section shows Pollan trying to hunt, gather and cultivate his own food, and seems separate from the previous two sections, more a philosophical exploration of eating than an investigation of an industry.

The book is at its best when Pollan shows that "organic" does not necessarily mean eco-friendly, sustainable or humane, and has become just another label. His description of Salatin and his farm is wonderful. The description of the US's dependence on, and subsidizing of corn, and how this corn is used to "grow beef", is concerning and repulsive. You realize the extent to which a well-intended policy can create a monster.

Now for the flaws, which are important. In a book that is clearly ambitious and seems to attempt comprehensiveness, Pollan allows himself freedom to introduce arguments at face value.
You'll see him quote reams of articles and statistics to back up some statement, and right next to that he'll criticize an establishment because "the animals look unhappy" or "the smell is nauseous". Those arguments would be fine in many types of books, but here it seems the author just stopped digging. Is "bad smell" necessarily a bad thing? Can he better describe what he understands by an unhappy animal, and how that unhappiness affects its own life, and our health?
Pollan describes four meals, representing industrial, organic, local-organic and hunted-gathered. The industrial meal is represented by getting take-out from McDonald's and eating it in his car. Point taken, but I'm sure plenty of healthy and tasty industrial meals can be had. I would have liked to hear, say, a chef defending some industrial product - I'm sure one could have been found.
Another problem is that Pollan settles into arguments, and particular words, that he then repeats to exhaustion. Often, his personal thoughts seem out of place, and not that original anyway - there is a brief foray into vegetarianism that left me unimpressed, for instance.

I have the impression the book tries to be too many things - an indictment on an industry, a travelogue, a philosophical treatise, a literary work and an impartial documentary. I would have liked it much better if it had focused more clearly and consistently on one of its aims.

5 out of 5 stars A need to read for sure!.......2007-10-18

If you don't know the history and significance of corn in the U.S., you need to read this book! Very informative.

5 out of 5 stars Warning! This book may change the way you eat!.......2007-10-13

This book will change the way you think about what you eat. And not just in terms of your own individual health/nutrition/monetary cost but also in an increased awareness of the larger ramifications of those choices. Pollan gets the reader really thinking about where our food - animal, vegetable and "other" comes from. Did you know how amazingly pervasive corn is? Do we really need to be eating bread that's loaded with high fructose corn syrup? I'm not a vegetarian and don't plan to become one, but do animals really need to be subjected to nightmarish conditions and given food they were never intended by nature to consume? Why should you care how a steer lives before it ends up on your plate? Because how an animal lives, how it is slaughtered and how it goes through the process to end up in that neat plastic package in the meat department has a direct effect on your health, that's why. You'll never look at the products lining the aisles of your local supermarket the same way again.

1 out of 5 stars Food is highly processed, o rlly??.......2007-10-13

Thanks for nothing. Tell me something that everyone on the planet doesn't know. The only point in this book worth mentioning is that lots of the food we eat comes from corn. I could have done 5 minutes of research online and learned every single fact in this book. Get a brain, moran.

4 out of 5 stars A Detective's Take on The Food We Eaty.......2007-10-12

This is certainly not your Mother's cookbood. In fact, it's not a cookbook at all, nor is it intended to be. It examines, in very fine detail, the way we used to eat, and what exactly constututes the primary food we eat today. Just what is this stuff called food? It fills American supermarket shelves...seemingly from floor to ceiling. Much of it is based on one crop - including the packaging. Is it a healthy diet? It's certainly not what our bodies were designed to consume. A dilemma, to be sure, but also a facinating examination of our nation's food business. The key word is business, not to be confused with nourshment. It's a good read. If you're really interested in learning where our staple food originated, and the many ways it is being used today, you won't regret learning about "The Omnivore's Dilemma".

Book Description

Parents will do almost anything to get their kids to eat healthier, but unfortunately, they've found that begging, pleading, threatening, and bribing don't work. With their patience wearing thin, parents will "give in" for the sake of family peace, and reach for "kiddie" favorites--often nutritionally inferior choices such as fried fish sticks, mac n' cheese, Pop-sicles, and cookies.

Missy Chase Lapine, former publisher of Eating Well magazine, faced the same challenges with her two young daughters, and she sought a solution. Now in The Sneaky Chef, Lapine presents over 75 recipes that ingeniously disguise the most important superfoods inside kids' favorite meals. With the addition of a few simple make-ahead purees or clever replacements, (some may surprise you!) parents can pack more fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants in their kids' foods. Examples of "Sneaky" recipes include:

-No Harm Chicken Parm
-Power Pizza
-Incognito Burritos
-Guerilla Grilled Cheese
-Brainy Brownies
-Health-by-Chocolate Cookies
-Quick fixes for Jell-O(R)

It's a book chock-full of strategies that will help any parent incorporate better health for the whole family.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars pleased mother of picky toddler.......2007-10-19

I am very happy with this purchase and have already recommended this to many of my friends who battle toddlers everyday regarding healthy eating. I like the book because it is written succinctly and entertainingly. As a full time working mom with a 32 month old and an 8 month old I have very little time to read. But I managed to read this in a weekend and have already implemented some of the tips. I have modified some of the recipes since I live in a rather rural area with grocery stores that do not offer a lot of the items mentioned in the book. But I did what I could with what I had on hand. So far so good! I pureed carrots for my infant the other day and thought I would throw some in that night's spaghetti sauce. My daughter (and my husband) gobbled it up, no questions asked and no idea they were eating something a bit healthier! It tasted great and I felt great knowing I had added a boost! My toddler refused to eat her oatmeal the other day which is unusual as this is one food she is almost always guaranteed to eat. I typically buy the packets of oatmeal and make it with water but I opted to give her quick oats made with milk instead. I mixed in a half cup of no-sugar added blueberry applesauce for flavor but she still didn't care for it. Today I gave her the same oatmeal and topped it with rainbow sprinkles and not only did she eat every bite she said "Thank you mommy for making my oatmeal pretty." This is a great book that offers a variety of ideas that I find very user friendly and easily modified. Strongly recommended! I LOVE BEING A SNEAKY CHEF!!!

3 out of 5 stars novel ways to get veggies into kids.......2007-10-18

Would love to have seen some pictures in this book of the food the author created. I have tried a few of these ideas, some work, some don't. For the kids who are " picky 2 yr. olds," many have not been exposed to the fast foods she speaks of , so the recipes she comes up with don't apply.
Lots of them are good for older kids who don't see any differences in their food. Nothing in this book addresses kids who hate the texture of ground meat like my 2 yr. old granddaughter does. (Or will not touch eggs, mashed potatoes, etc.)The book should address that it is about vegetables and fruits only. Most kids love to eat fruit but need other nutrients and protein more. Book has good ideas and does makes one try to experiment and be creative.

3 out of 5 stars Good idea for more veggies, not crazy about the delivery system.......2007-10-16

I looked through this book at a bookstore and thought it was very good in spirit, but a bit poor in execution. I am not down on the book because I think any effort to increase veggies in a diet is commendable, but I wanted to supply an alternative to being sneaky with your children about their daily diet.

I only offer the following as advice for those who are interested, I do not pose an expert or anything like that. It is also not a knock on anyone's parenting skills or anything like that...

I have to say that growing up I was never tricked into eating veggies or anything else. My brother and I grew up loving veggies because my mom took 2-4 extra minutes to make them look extra appealing to a child's imagination. I think if you have time to puree veggies, maybe you could use the time to just make the veggies look better. My mom would stand our broccoli on end like tiny trees in a small bit of mashed potatoes and sprinkle a bit of parm on top for snow and call it the "tasty forest" She'd do the same thing with cauliflower and say it was winter time. She'd sometimes make a salad using a small cookie cutter for the bell pepper to make stars, which looked awesome. (I've done this too and it is really fast) If my brother and I were reading a book that had veggies in it, she'd make those veggies -- like jack and the bean stalk -- we happily ate green beans for a week! We had a TINY garden and were asked to go pick out what we wanted for dinner, she'd usually find us out there a few minutes later just eating the raw carrots or radishes. I know very few parents have the luxury of huge amounts of time or a garden, but maybe try to just get a little more creative to get the kids to like the actual veggies themselves. Japanese mothers make adorable bento boxes for their kid's lunches filled with veggies in all kinds of appealing ways. Who wouldn't love to have a 4 year old who loves bok choy?

All that said, I didn't like mushrooms until I was in college and I still hate sprouts -- tastes are tastes. But I attribute my love of a lot of other veggies to my mom's creative ways of introducing them to me as a tiny kid. For some parents, that kind of approach may work well with their kids too -- it definitely couldn't hurt :)

4 out of 5 stars very strategic...........2007-10-16

This is a great way to give your kids the vitamins and nutrients they need until they realize that fruits and vegetables actually DO taste good.

4 out of 5 stars Good for moms.......2007-10-16

This idea is very good as it gets veggies into our children's diet. Americans still eat far too little in terms of fruits and veggies than most of the world, which is why I started Healthy Habits, Healthy Kids www.hhhkids.com. We offer FREE weekly quick tips to parents dealing with finicky eaters. This book is right up our alley as it is similiar to our Cooking Incognito recipes we showcase in our tips and monthly newsletter.

Book Description

This photo of Escherichia coli being attacked by bacteriophages highlights rapidly developing technologies for using phages to treat antibiotic resistant infections without destroying normal resident bacteria, and without side effects. Phages are also being used to detect and remove pathogens from our food supplies, both plant and animal. Also exciting is the use of phages as vehicles to delivery DNA vaccines, often directly to mammalian immune system cells. Recent work also suggests possible antitumor effects of phages. We stand on the edge of a whole new world of exploration and applications of microbiology.

For over 20 years, and through five editions, Black's Microbiology: Principles and Explorations has captured students' imaginations. Her enthusiasm, passion, and knack for memorable stories and anecdotes bring the study of microbiology to life in a way few other texts can match.

Now updated to reflect the latest topics in the field (e.g., SARS, bioterrorism, GMO's, geomicrobiology) and accompanied by state-of-the-art animations of key concepts, this new edition is sure to help inspire a new generation of enthusiasts for the dynamic science of microbiology.

Critical Acclaim
"I continue to find Black's text an excellent contribution to undergraduate Microbiology education." --Karen Messley, Rock Valley College

"I like the conversational and informal style Black adopts throughout the book. This is a book, which could very well engage even the most reluctant student. It is comprehensive, nicely detailed, and incorporates many aids to teaching and learning..."--Iris Cook, Westchester CC

3 out of 5 stars It's ok.......2006-02-19

It's an okay book. I needed it for a class. There are several mistakes on the diagrams (our professor noted which ones).

3 out of 5 stars Lots of typos and missing info........2006-01-07

Good study guide when the answers were in the back. Sometimes the answers were off by one or non existent. If you can get past that, it does help, but jeez don't they employ a proofreader? For thirty bucks, I was kind of disappointed. The textbook is great.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Informative Book!!!.......2005-12-12

WOW! I love this book. Every time I read part of it I learn so much stuff that I never knew before. It is fairly advanced information but it is written in a very understandable way. I am in high school and I like it because it teaches in the same format as my school's biology text books. I use this book because I like to read about this stuff. It is so facinating. If you are in a high school biology class, read this and you will be light years ahead of every one else!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for teachers and students.......2005-09-17

This text explains some very complex information in a very reader-friendly way. The photos, charts and practical examples of how microbiology impacts everyone's life make it very readable. I would recommend it for teachers and students!

5 out of 5 stars Micro Made Easy.......2005-09-14

This is one of the best text books I have ever used. The information is clear, concise, and interesting. It gives examples throughout the book of how microbiology is being used now to help us.

Pan-fried Shrimp with Green Curry Cashew Sauce

Serves 4
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total time: 15 minutes

You can purchase bottled Thai green curry sauce in most supermarkets, but this recipe proves how quick and easy it is to make your own. Refrigerate any leftover sauce, covered, for up to 3 days.

1 slice (1/4 inch thick) peeled fresh ginger
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons roasted unsalted cashews
1/3 cup plain low-fat yogurt
1/4 cup packed cilantro leaves
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon curry powder
Coarse salt and fresh ground pepper
1 1/2 pounds peeled and deveined large shrimp
2 tablespoons olive oil

1 In a food processor, pulse the ginger until finely chopped. Add the 3/4 cup cashews; process until smooth, 2 to 3 minutes.
2 Add the yogurt, cilantro, sugar, and curry powder; season with salt. Process until incorporated, 1 to 2 minutes, scraping down the sides as needed. Transfer to a serving bowl; sprinkle with the remaining cashews.
3 Season the shrimp with salt and pepper. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add half the shrimp; cook until opaque throughout, 2 to 3 minutes. Repeat with the remaining tablespoon oil and remaining shrimp. Serve the shrimp with the sauce.

4 out of 5 stars Everyday Food Review.......2007-10-17

Everyday Food:Great Food Fast is a wonderfully illustrated book. Every illustration makes your mouth water and entices you to try the recipe. The recipes are easy to follow and are not time consuming to make. I

4 out of 5 stars nice variety.......2007-10-11

I enjoy how the book is sectioned by season, and also the variety of recipes included. I have found several things to try from the book, however I seem to find more in the Everyday Food Magazines than from the book. If I had it to do over I would have skipped on the book and bought a subscription to the magazine instead.

5 out of 5 stars Best Cookbook I've ever used!!!.......2007-10-10

First of all let me just say, I LOVE this cookbook! All of the recipes are easy to make and use common ingredients. It's also great that every recipe has an accompanying picture so you can see what it's supposed to turn out like. And, it's broken up by season so that you're using the freshest ingredients available. I've made about 1/3 of the recipes so far in the book and only came across 1 I didn't like. I'm buying this book for everyone in my family as a holiday gift- it's perfect!!

5 out of 5 stars perfect title.......2007-09-24

This is precisely as billed...great food fast. Clear directions, and lovely pictures of the finished product. Healthy menus that are easily prepared. Love this book, and am giving it as gifts this Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! Exceeded My Expectations.......2007-09-23

Maybe not everyone would love the book for the reasons I do, but I really appreciate the vast number of interesting, tasty vegetable dishes using very common market items. There are beef and pork dishes, of course, but those didn't interest me nearly as much as the vegetables, soups, seafood and chicken--which have all been excellent and easy, as promised.

There's a lot in this book--along with some helpful tips at the end, and gorgeous photographs. I was really happy that its not all updated "classic American comfort food" or some variation therein that overwhelms good flavor combinations with too much butter, cream, and salt. These meals have a freshness and flavor that will give them wide appeal, and the preparations are straightforward and easy to make all year long. A very pleasant surprise.

UPON READING THIS BOOK I MUST SAY THAT IT IS THE MOST INFORMATIVE AND LOGICAL BOOK ON OUR PETS NUTRITION. WITH MANY RECIPES FOR EVERY PETS PARTICULAR NEEDS. NOT TO MENTION THE INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT IS IN THE PET FOODS THAT WE ARE FEEDING OUR PETS. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO WANTS THE BEST NUTRITION FOR THEIR ANIMALS. FIVE STARS IS NOT ENOUGH TO SAY HOW GOOD THIS INFORMATIVE BOOK IS. LINDA JONES

4 out of 5 stars Owner of a 20 year old Shih Tzu.......2007-10-15

NOTE: The only part of this book that I use is the dog food recipes. I haven't tried any of the home remedies, nor do I want to. That's why I'm only giving the book 4 stars.

I have been feeding my small dog the Doggie Oats recipe (substituting rice for the oats per Dr. Pitcairn's instructions) for the past 10 years. When I first started making her food, my vet and everyone else I knew were very skeptical. Now that my dog is 20 years old (no kidding), I no longer get raised eyebrows about the food. If I ever have another dog she will definitely get a home-made diet. Of course, if you have a large dog you might go broke, but Dr. Pitcairn even has recipes for top-dressing regular dog food if you can't afford to feed all homemade.

I've been doing this so long that it's just part of my routine. Every 2 weeks I make a large batch of dog food and store it in small reusable containers. I keep one in the fridge and freeze the rest. It's easy, my dog loves it, and it's good for her. It's not cheap, but neither is vet care and my dog has needed very little of that.

If you are in to homeopathy and want to use such toxins as Poison ivy and belladonna on your beloved pet, then this book is for you. Mine is in the trash can.

5 out of 5 stars I am delighted to have this book!.......2007-10-14

I have 2 dogs and I am not ready to make all of their meals from scratch ...I still need to do more research and read more Whole dog Journals ... but this book is wonderful because it tells me ways I can enhance their lives, what vegetables and grains I can and should not add, wonderful advice to add kelp and bone meal and other healthy things my dogs benefit from ... I also have taken advice from the herbal preparations when my dogs have had problems. This is an interesting and enjoyable book to read and a terrific safe basic written by a vet. I keep this book out all the time and use it often. If you have a cat or dog whom you love, and you want to help him or her live a healthier life, I would highly reccomend reading this book. You can follow the easy recipes or you can just give healthy additions and healthy snacks.

5 out of 5 stars Dr Pitcairns natural health.......2007-10-05

This is absolutely a must book. Giving dogs prescribed medications often involves side affects which shorten their lives. Being able to find out about natural products that can help them is great. It can not only lenghten their lives, but also cost less in the long run. I highly reccomend this book to all dog owners.

REAL FOOD FOR CATS is The Cat Lover's Cookbook, completely revised with new recipes, new information, and all-new illustrations.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Useless.......2007-10-15

There are no serving sizes per recipe of by weight of cat. Calories are missing. How can I feed my cats a healthy diet without this vital information?

5 out of 5 stars Are we all rating the same book?.......2007-05-12

I bought a copy of this book and haven't seen any recipes that call for onions. Granted, I've only made about half the recipes so far, but I've seen nothing that will harm our cats. Two of the recipes I've made did call for garlic but the amount was so small that it wouldn't have any adverse effect.

I've made the Tuna Cakes and the recipe did not call for onions. The fish chowder recipe makes 5 servings - no mention of onion, and only one clove of garlic was needed.

I'm also pleased about the various safety tips throughout the book. I recommend this book to all.

I got a copy of this book, looked at the Tuna Cakes recipe and it did not list onions. Also in the back of the book with the human recipes it informs to leave onions out of the cat's meal. Not sure why there is a difference but just wanted to inform that I didn't find onions in the recipes. ????

1 out of 5 stars Vet approved???.......2007-04-23

Onions can cause Heinz's Anemia in cats. I would not take my cat to any vet that approved feeding onions to a cat. This book has dangerous recipes. Spend your money on better book.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer beware and ABBEY is wrong.......2007-04-17

UPDATE 5/14/07: Because there is a mystifying dispute between those readers who see onions (harmful to cats) in these recipes and those who don't, here's an easy way to see for yourself and make an informed decision. Use the excellent Amazon feature "Search Inside This Book." Either key in the word "onion" and click "Go" to see how many pages list onions in the recipes (I find 22) or choose the "Surprise me" option and click it repeatedly -- it took only 4-5 clicks for me to find "Kitty Tacos" with 1/2 cup onion listed as the second ingredient.

Original April 2007 review:
WARNING: Onions are toxic to cats, and these recipes are full of onions.

While a few recipes in this book may be safe, it's hard to trust that because many recipes specifically for cats contain onion -- and ABBEY, whose review 32 people found helpful, is dead wrong that this is only the "people recipes at the end of the book." (Sorry, ABBEY, but I did read and comprehend the information.)

Don't be swayed by my saying so -- please judge for yourself. With the pet food recall, we all need to watch out for each other and, more importantly, for our precious cats. Below, I have copied page 23 verbatim, and it is NOT one of the "people recipes" at the end of the book:

"Tuna Cakes
Cats will race even faster to the sound of a whirring can opener if they think you're about to prepare this tasty and nutritious dish.
2 eggs
1 6-ounce can tuna, drained, and flaked
1 small ONION, finely chopped
4 slices bread, cubed into kitty size bits
1/2 teaspoon iodized salt
1 teaspoon brewer's yeast
1 teaspoon bonemeal
2 tablespoons margarine

1. Beat the eggs lightly in a bowl. Add the tuna, ONION, bread cubes, salt, brewer's yeast, and bonemeal. Mix thoroughly until moistened.
2. Form into small patties. Melt the margarine in a skillet and fry the patties until golden brown. When cool, crumble each patty and serve.
Makes 3 to 5 servings."

On page 25, the Fish Chowder specifically for cats calls for 1 glove garlic, minced and 2 tablespoons finely chopped ONION. On page 27, the Boogaloo Shrimp, again, in a recipe supposedly specifically for cats, the first ingredient is 1/2 chopped ONION. Page 32, the recipe for Chicken with Greens, there is a warning about introducing cats gradually to greens because they can be sensitive to it, but no warning about the 1 clove garlic in the recipe or on page 33, the Chicken Salad that calls for 1 tablespoon finely chopped ONION. The "people" recipes ABBEY refers to, called "Tandem Cooking" by the author, do not begin until page 81.

I am extremely disappointed I bought this potentially dangerous book and applaud the reviewer Cordelia Wright who is researching the vet who wrote the preface.

This is not a time to stand on ceremony when pet health is at stake from commercial food -- we need reliable sources of information about safe food, and this book is not it for the reasons previous reviewers have stated. Buyer, please beware.

I have complained to Amazon about continuing to promote and sell this book in the face of the pet food scare (a sick irony that people avoiding tainted commercial food turn to a so-called "vet-approved" recipe book containing recipes that will harm their cats!), and I have written a complaint to the book's publisher. I'm also pursuing getting a journalist involved to warn the public and find out how this book's author can claim these recipes are "vet-approved" when no vet would say giving onions to cats is safe.

5 out of 5 stars food my husband will actually eat.......2007-10-11

If you are tired of buying a cookbook only to find 1 or 2 items that you will actually make, then Quick Fix Meals is for you. I was delighted to find lots of recipes that my husband and I enjoy that do not require a lot of specialty ingredients which can be difficult to find living in a rural area. I am really pleased with this cookbook and look forward to buying more Robin Miller titles in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Delicious.......2007-09-09

I bought this book for my mom, read the recipes and had to buy it for myself. I love the recipes that begin with a big item that can be used for different meals over the following 3 days. As a working mom, these recipes have made meals so much easier!

Finally, real food for real people. Nothing fancy-smancy. Recipes I can actually cook and want to eat. Also enjoyed Robin's pantry list and organization tips.

Love the time saving recipes when you can take a base ingredient and transform it into several different dishes.
