Book Description

As the first of its kind for this course, THE SPEAKER'S HANDBOOK has established itself as both a reference for the individual speaker and an excellent textbook for use in the public speaking course. The new edition of the THE SPEAKER'S HANDBOOK continues to distinguish itself by providing another innovation -- a new spiral bound, tabbed format. Each of the chapters can stand alone, enabling the speaker to consult only those parts of the book covering the aspects of public speaking with which they need guidance. The new edition also offers expanded and updated research and presentation coverage, a new text-specific CD-ROM with interactivity that guides students through the speech-making process, and links to the Web-based Speech Builder Express speech-outlining program.

Book Description

In America today college professors cringe at the lack of writing skills displayed by their students, business leaders bemoan poor communicative skills among their employees, and people themselves recognize that they (and their children) have a problem and want to do something about it.
This inviting book introduces readers anew to the eight parts of speech and common grammatical problems -- such as the case of pronouns depicted in the book's title, the tension between nouns and verbs, the controversy of the active vs. passive voice, and the power of a verb-based style. Then equipped with a knowledge of the parts of speech and the power of the verb form, Good presents his theory of style and the craft of sentences -- including those important marks of punctuation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-10

The title alone will sell you. I must hear people misusing "I and me" 100 times a week. I wish I'd had this book in high school. It lays out usage in a clear and understandable manner and doesn't bog you down with information that you don't care about.
Terrific reference book for non-English majors.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, Buy This Book!!!.......2007-07-08

The fact that you are reading this review indicates that you are interested in grammar. That means you should buy this book, as it is certainly one of the better books on this topic. What I especially like is that it does not treat you as a grammarian and it reviews many basics of sentence structure - and it is an enjoyable read. Yes, you still should have a copy of "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and White if you're serious about good writing, but this book is a clear, single source, winner to me. I write articles, books and websites. I routinely seek good reference advice. That includes this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Grammar.......2007-05-13

Mr. Good laments the fact that grammar is no longer taught in schools and he has taken the effort to introduce novices to it in a fun way. I am truly enjoying his book and I am learning much along the way! Thank you, Mr. Good!

5 out of 5 stars Finally - a grammar book written for the rest of us!.......2007-04-11

I am always trying to ensure my grammar is correct (a habit I picked up from my father.) I've not been able to find a book that explains common grammar problems in a way I would remember. This one is easy to use and I will always keep it with my dictionary and other reference books.

5 out of 5 stars Our Most Important Subject.......2006-08-28

This is an excellent book for learning or renewing our knowledge of English Grammar. There is a conspiracy in this country to dumb down the attendees of public schools, and it began in the early part of the last century with some wealthy industrialists and government officials. Leaving Children behind began before Bush and he is a prime example of it. Let's all fight back by speaking English properly, as well as reading and writing excellently. This book is a good place to start! Then, on to Phonics!

4 out of 5 stars A Speaker's Guidebook.......2001-08-21

An excellent text for novice public speakers. I've found it particularly helpful for students who are unfamiliar with public speaking. The tabs make it an easy reference guide to tailor a speech to your personal topic. For people who are experienced, or who have never given a public speech, there is invaulable information about audience analysis, presentation, and the basic construction of a good speech. This is the kind of text that public speakers will keep in their library as a personal reference guide to aid them in the construction of any speech.

5 out of 5 stars The truth about the speaking business.......2007-05-21

A friend of mine loaned me this book and I started reading it. By the time I got to the 3rd chapter, I went ahead and ordered it of off Amazon!

No B.S., no sugar-coating it. Just the facts about how to make serious money in the speaking business. What you should do and what you should NOT do (sometime even more important).

The yin and yang of the speaking world would be Speak & Grow Rich by Dottie Walters and Money Talks by Alan Weiss. Both coming from different directions, but both equally as important.

Get it!

5 out of 5 stars Concepts As Good Now as Then.......2007-04-18

Alan Weiss knows his stuff, and delivers it in an accessible and straightforward package. Never one to sugarcoat, his advice to speakers centers on marketing more than delivery. If you are looking into the business of speaking, this book is for you. If you want to become a better speaker, this book is only 'sort of' good for you. But its definitely good for your audiences.

5 out of 5 stars It's Great, You'll Love It.......2007-01-14

Alan is the real deal. He tells it straight. He's really interesting (just like his talks). Read the other reviews--as they capture my experience that this is a great book for those who want to improve every facit of their professional speaking experience. If you're serious, buy the book. If you're not, re-read the other reviews again....until you 'get it'.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for speakers.......2006-03-21

As a new speaker I purchased this book to add to my collection and it's one of the top books. Weiss holds no punches and just gets real. Not alot of fluff and some wonderful recommendations to continue to help me to think like a speaker. I read the book in one night. I recommend buying this book and Speak and Grow Rich by Dottie Walkters and Lilly Walters to read together. The both give excellent insight into the world of speaking.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful suggestions about publicity for speaking engagements.......2006-03-19

This book had many helpful suggestions about publicity for speaking engagements. Weiss seems to have made high dollar lifestyle from speaking, and leading workshops. He comes across as arrogant and opinionated, but the book is full of good ideas of where to look for speaking engagements, and make top dollars in the business.

1 out of 5 stars Out of date.......2007-09-09

This book should be updated or taken off the market. All examples are way out of date - from technology to marketing to today's audience. Very little value. Ironically the aurhors encourage you to keep current and they are over a decade behind. A fluff piece that promotes their speaker's bureau.

4 out of 5 stars Abundant Options to Profit at the Podium.......2007-04-02

Anyone who's ready to share their expertise on the plateform in small and large settings will find a wealth of resources in this book.

If you're just getting started, Speak and Grow Rich will overwhelm you with revenue opportunities. What I suggest, as a veteran speaker, is that you have pad and paper by your side to list the numerous products you can realistically create to start your speaking career and boost sales.

Every product mentioned in the book won't be beneficial for you, but the ones that link you with your audience will create untold revenue.

I found myself skimming some of the chapters, and that's only because I've been speaking for more than 10 years, so I know and practice much of what the authors suggest. However, I poured over the details in chapters 3 and 9.

The information on learning to craft contracts so that you make money from recordings and don't give away this intellectual property is priceless whether you're just starting or a long-time speaker. This tutorial was eloquently explained and not to be overlooked.

Speak and Grow Rich will help you to trade in your stage fright for bountiful checks you can bank on.

5 out of 5 stars Blah, blah, blah!.......2006-08-25

I'm sure Walters is on to something, but I'm having trouble squaring the idea of my wife's constant chatter with this nagging sense that I'm the poorer for it.

5 out of 5 stars I bought it twice ..........2006-06-06

... but the second time was in error!

As a professional speaker and consultant I am always on the lookout for ways to gather material to help my clients improve themselves (corporate and individuals).

To do this, I need to keep my presentation skills well honed. This book, although to some it may seem like "teaching grandma to suck eggs", it does contain many nuggets of invaluable information for speakers of various levels.

Also, I don't necessarily use all the suggestions and advice given however, the information is particularly good if you're just starting out our are a mid-level speaker.

Remember to have fun as you seek to be all you can be!

PS: I bought the book twice in error and could've returned one but decided to hang on to it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Resource to learn the ins and outs of public speaking.......2006-05-26

If you're contemplating public speaking as a career choice or to enhance your book sales Speak and Grow Rich by the mother and daughter team of Dottie and Lilly Walters is a must for your Writer's Bookshelf.

Speak and Grow Rich is considered the bible of the public speaking world. Between the covers you'll discover all the foundation material you need to begin building and growing your public speaking career. The topics include deciding what to speak about, getting those first bookings, spinning those early bookings into more engagements, designing and filling your PR kit and promotional materials, expanding into back of room sales, growing your home office and knowing when to seek the services of speaker bureaus. The text is also filled with helpful groups, organizations, and sites to find additional information.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on business communication.......2006-10-24

This book covers it all -- speaking, writing, email, briefing and web pages. Best book I've seen on these subjects. Bailey walks the talk. His book is easy to read, and the principles are illustrated clearly. What I like best are the examples.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2000-03-13

Edward Bailey commands the field of "plain English" applied to business writing. This is a complete, modern--and highly readable--summary of everything you need to know about writing memo's letters and resumes and doing oral presentations. It lacks a section on e-mail. The resume and cover letter sections use examples which may not match for all industries, and the letter format (showing "Writer/typist") is outdated in the Internet Age.

5 out of 5 stars The communication doctor.......1999-12-03

Want to improve your writing? Want to improve your presentation skills? There's not a better book on the shelves! A must if your serious about your career. In only hours, your writing will improve -- colleagues will notice.

Book Description

The Deliberative Democracy Handbook is a terrific resource for democratic practitioners and theorists alike. It combines rich case material from many cities and types of institutional settings with careful reflection on core principles. It generates hope for a renewed democracy, tempered with critical scholarship and political realism. Most important, this handbook opens a spacious window on the innovativeness of citizens in the U.S. (and around the world) and shows how the varied practices of deliberative democracy are part of a larger civic renewal movement.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of case studies of public deliberation in the aim of influencing government decision-making........2007-04-19

John Gastil and Peter Levine have done important service for the academics and practitioners in the field of public participation in government decision-making. This 300 page text book provides 19 chapters of research into diverse contemporary demonstrations of deliberative democracy mostly within the U.S.A. but also some in-depth reviews of important European, Australian and Brazilian systems. An excellent variety of models are discussed including all levels of government decision-making from city planing to national policies. The research is presented by diverse authors with first hand experience. The writing is a good balance of academic rigour and perspective as well as practitioner friendly explanations and observations.

The only problem with this text is the use of "handbook" in the title. While the clearly written case studies are insightful for practitioners and the various practical suggestions found through out the book could help inform a processes plan, they do not constitute the definition of handbook, which is supposed to be an easily referenced manual of instructions. For a real handbook in deliberative democracy try "The Community Planning Handbook: How People Can Shape Their Cities, Towns and Villages in Any Part of the World" by Nick Wates which is clearly written and structured to guide people in the practical implementation of community deliberation to direct local decision-making. You may also be interested in handbooks for specific participatory democracy systems such as the classic "Preferred Futuring", the popular "Open Space Technology", the proven "Consensus Conference" or the new and ultra-simple "Advanced Dotmocracy".

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what it promises, in an engaging style........2006-09-22

I read this book on assignment, and was surprised at how enjoyable it was. Gastil and Levine pull together experiences from across the country, all through the 20th Century, distilling them into clear lessons and practical advice. And they write well! While it could have been a dry tome of lists and statistics, instead they bring it alive with insight and lively writing.

The review below calling it a 'puff piece' implies an expectation of step-by-step instructions; totally off base. The sub-title is spot on: Strategies for Effective Civic Engagement. I read this book to learn how -and how not- to create and participate in civic debate and education (it's a much bigger field than I realized), which is exactly what I learned. And, while they don't give you a numbered checklist, there ARE enough details and caveats to effectively structure your own town hall meeting. (That reviewer should read the last chapter again.)

What Gastil and Levine do, the importance of which becomes increasingly apparent as one reads the book, is provide a general framework for creating, understanding, and evaluating various forms of deliberation WITHOUT boxing the reader into a one-size-fits-all structure. We're in the middle of exciting (ahem...) political times, and the value of this handbook exists in both the clarity and timing of the authors.

5 out of 5 stars This book was great!.......2005-11-04

I just finished "The Deliberative Democracy Handbook" and recommend it as a welcome addition to interdisciplinary studies of researchers, policy-makers,students, and practitioners. In explaining the course of national deliberation and its history, Gastil and Levine present a well-argued history of civic engagement that includes transnational, grass-roots, and bureaucratic dialogues. Noting that the resurgence of deliberation in the 1990's might be short-lived, the authors present case studies of what has and hasn't worked,
such as deliberative polls, on-line dialogues, and town meetings. Perhaps most useful is the handbook's application to other types of discourse; for instance,an analysis of how NGOs may benefit civic culture is relevant to efforts in
international relief and development, particularly if you want to use the Participatory Rural Appraisal or similar methods
of measuring realities. I think the authors shine a much-needed spotlight on the promise of public deliberation in encouraging and restoring multiple citizen voices.

1 out of 5 stars Puff pieces - a real disapointment.......2005-08-04

I ordered this book hoping that it would indeed be a handbook that would be appropriate for teaching college undergraduates about this exciting approach to problem-solving and capacity-building. With gathering dismay I leafed through the chapters, finding one after another to be merely a collection of breezy comments, written principally by the originator of one or another slightly varying technique, that uncritically promoted the value of that technique. The material appears plucked from a foundation grant proposal. Surprisingly, considering the deep familiarity of the authors with these techniques, the book contains little in the way of actual operational advice. Rather, most of the chapters are unsupported and grandious claims for the utility of each approach, presumably designed to entice the reader to sign a lucrative consulting contract with the author. Folks, this is why we have academic research - to avoid empty and meaningless self-promoting efforts like this one.

Fortunately for me, this book saved the day and I had a great presentation thanks to the content of it. It was so helpful that it was passed around the class for help. It is easy to follow and understand, and even easier to impliment. I highly recommend it for anyone who may need to speak in front of anyone else for practical or professional reasons.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars From the Author.......2007-04-05

"Pizzazz" isn't about the presenter. And it's not about "the show," that is, entertaining audiences with a snazzy presentation where all the attention focused on the presenter. It's about turning audiences of passive listeners into audiences of active learners - big difference. When a presenter involves his/her audience in the learning, then the presentation is filled with pizzazz. And, which is even better, learners can remember and use what they heard afterwards - something that doesn't happen when the audience is simply listening to the presenter, no matter how entertaining the presenter may be.

While not all books are for everyone, there are many folks who have learned a great deal from this book (as evidenced by emails I receive and book sales - over 20,000 copies to date). These people are using what they have learned in effective ways to add lots of pizzazz to their presentations.

    Carry on! Sharon Bowman

2 out of 5 stars Very basic stuff and NO PIZAZZ at all..........2005-08-16

I was very disappointed with this book. I am a speaker and this book will not help me much. The basic message of the book: the audience must be involved so it learns. No kidding!?
This book was "presenting with pizazz" and NOT "tricks to become a better trainer"!!! The title is completely misleading, since I didn't learn how to add any creativity, showbiz or "pizazz" to my presentations!
In fact, being known for my surprising presentations, I will really think about writing this book myself, as it was meant to be.
I do not recommend this book since it contains only minimal content.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Tips!.......2003-07-29

Almost every book on presentation commanded at least a few hundred pages of text, so you could imagine my sceptism when I bought this book.

I am glad to say that I have not regretted this purchase. :)

You realise that this book is a no-nonsense, straight to the point tip book, the moment you flip to the content page. The elaborations are concise and punchy. You don't have to mull through numerous pages of boring academia but you get very useful tips. Sharon Bowman is quite obviously an old hand at training.

What I also loved were the punchy and witty little words of wisdom that Sharon Bowman boxed up in various parts of the book. It made lots of common sense when you read them, and of course, served to tickle your funny bones.

My only reservation about this book is that while the tips are great, its suggested games/pair shares do not seem very useful for most situations - to some extent, these pair shares can seem rather common and boring.

Nevertheless, I would take this with a pinch of salt, and rather use these suggested games/pair shares not as the hard and fast model answers, nor as templates, but more as suggested examples. Ultimately any game can become boring and mundane if too many people keep repeating it in different trainings. Your job as a trainer is to make sure this doesn't happen, and that creativitiy is always maintained.

    5 out of 5 stars A Superb Resource!.......2002-01-21

The first time I read Presenting With Pizzazz, I applied two ideas to a Negotiation Skills workshop. I plan to go back and use additional ideas for my other sessions. This has a wealth of unique ideas for active learning!

5 out of 5 stars I hope my kids' teachers read this book!.......2002-01-06

This book makes involving students easy, quick, and fun. It makes sense to teach this way. I wish more teachers for both kids and adults would use these ideas.
