Anyone who was captivated by the first three books in Bantock's imaginative Griffin & Sabine series--whether for the quality of the storytelling, the imagery, or even just for their creative design--owes it to themselves to check out these three followup volumes, which are every bit their equal on all counts. Even readers who are entirely unfamiliar with the Griffin & Sabine saga will, I think, find this trio a real treat and well worth the purchase price.

City girl and I recently read the six books. It was a delightful, warm, fun time, drinking wine and reading a book a night by the fire. I read aloud the male parts and she the female. We would laugh and wonder and hypothesize and puzzle over the meanings. They were wonderful memorable evenings.
My opinion of The Books:
He should have stopped at the first one!!
Like a movie company that sees dollar signs after a successful first run, Nick wrote a sequel that was a shadow of the original. The subsequent books prove to be good evidence that he had very little in mind as far as a story line goes and with the judicious application of vague, confusing and nonsensical teasings, he told us nothing. Just as "Jaws XXI" and "Halloween XVI" still brought the teenagers to the box office, so will "Sabine Becomes Cleopatra" and "Griffin Returns to Pleades" bring bring the Bantok herds stampeding into Barnes and Nobels. The cash registers will ring, Nick will smile, and the faithful will say, "May I please have some more?"

storyline doesn't quite live up to the artwork.......2006-11-18
About ten years passed for me between the time I first discovered the Griffin & Sabine trilogy and this Morning Star box set. It's hard to judge this work without comparing it to the merits of the first trilogy. The lovers in Morning Star are far less interesting and their passion seems to be more about physical tension rather than the loneliness and searching that brought Griffin and Sabine together from their vastly different worlds. The villan from the 3rd G&S story is back, but why he's interested in this new couple and how they relate to G&S is only vaguely hinted at.
You still get the guilty pleasure of reading someone else's mail, but because the two lovers already know each other, there isn't a sense of the story tensely unwinding as they are trying to figure out who they are in relation to each other. This trilogy seems to sacrifice the romantic tension and suspense of the first trilogy for a more philosophical statement about the connections between people. Nick Bantock's artwork is still amazing, but the story and characters in this series aren't as compelling as the images in the book.
Resistant to change.......2006-06-01
I was a huge fan of the first 3 books. I even got a tattoo based on one of the drawings but these last 3 somehow didn't have the same magic. I fell in love with Griffin and Sabine and their relationship but could never embrace the 2 new characters we meet in the later 3 books. The artwork is just as wonderful as the original 3 but to me some of the magic of the love story was lost in the last 3. They are still fun to read and worth owning, especially if you enjoyed the original 3.

Promising beginning to Nine Kingdoms romantic Fantasy Saga leaves the reader wanting more.......2007-09-18
Lynn Kurland shows her versatility as a writer with this foray into the realm of romantic fantasy. This book is very different from her humorous time travel and historical romances, a lot more intense but totally fascinating.
The kingdom of Tor Neroche is in peril. King Adhémar's magical sword has lost its power and his brother Miach, the archmage of the realm, has discovered holes in his protection spells on their borders as well. Now their only hope is to find the wielder of the "queen's sword", the Sword of Angesand, in order to stem the tide of the dark magic encroaching on the kingdom.
Adhémar departs in search of the wielder, but the king is soon waylaid. When too much time has passed, Miach takes the form of a hawk and sets out to find him. Just when he is about to give up he sites the blaze of magic from the king's sword. Hence he finds Adhémar and so much more.
Morgan of Melksham has been charged with a mission by Nicholas of Lismòr, a man who had been like a father to her. She is to take a knife laced with magic and deliver it to the King of Tor Neroche. Morgan, a mercenary/shieldswoman hates magic but agrees to take on the task out a strong sense of duty. Ironically she nearly kills Adhémar for sneaking up behind her, but she is momentarily blinded by his handsome visage. His boastful demeanor soon has her wishing she had finished him off however, and since he is not inclined to reveal his identity, she assumes he is just one of the many sons named after the king of the realm.
Nicholas sends a band of Morgan's friends to meet her and protect her on her quest. Glines recognizes both the king and his brother Miach, but is asked to keep his knowledge to himself. Miach suspect that it was Morgan who had wrung magic from his brother's sword in battle and that she might well be the one that they seek. Since Morgan is quite vocal about her disapproval of magic, Miach tells her that he is a farmer who knows only small spells that might aid him in his work. While Adhémar merely annoys her, Morgan soon comes to trust Miach and eventually decides she might actually become fond of him. As Miach's feelings for the brave and capable warrior become stronger with each moment and more attacks begin to mount on their band, he begins to wonder if he might be able spare her the dubious duty of becoming the wielder of the magical sword.
It is not to be, his own duty dictates that he put the welfare of the kingdom before his heart and the woman he's come to love.
The magic of the dagger has been singing to Morgan and bringing strange dreams of a long forgotten past. By the time she reaches the Tor Neroche its song has become so deafening that she can barely focus on anything else. She longs to deliver her burden to the king and be done with it, but the castle has more than one surprise in store for her, and what she finds there might well destroy her. Certainly nothing in her world will ever be the same.
A happily ever after is not realized in this particular episode. The dark powers that the pair face are strong, but where there is life there is hope. Will Morgan find it in her heart to forgive Miach for his deception? What will the discovery of her heritage mean to them all? Together will they manage to save the kingdom from the darkness? Will Adhémar ever learn humility and cease being pompous? Will we learn more about the other five brothers? (Cathar is definitely intriguing.) We will have to wait and see.
While SF & F lovers are used to sagas of epic proportions Ms. Kurland's romance readers may lament having to wait for their happy ending, but with a storyline this intriguing I have a feeling it will be well worth a little patience. I highly recommend this promising beginning to the tales of the Nine Kingdoms.

I have everything Lynn Kurland has written on my keeper shelf. I know some were disappointed that this book wasn't her usual but I enjoyed it start to finish. I like the world she created and the people in it. It was also nice to see that she didn't veer from her own unique writing style. There was no HEA ending because the story continues. I'm looking forward to the next one. This is an author that never lets me down.

I have been a fan of Lynn Kurland for years, I have read EVERYTHING she has published, and have never been disappointed. This book was a departure from most of her books, however she stayed true to her basic plot line--strong, self relient girl has something to do, boy tries to help, and falls for girl, girl must stil finish what she started, but after some hardship, life is much better with boy. Ok I LOVE that, I also must say that I loved the fantasy background. (New and Different) I cant wait to read the next book, beacause as all true Kurland fans know, the plot will continue. Maybe with new characters, maybe with current ones, but the story goes on. I for one will be first in line to buy the next one. So, Lynn, if you read this--THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for your books, sharing your story telling with us mere mortals.

Not what I expected.......2007-06-12
While I have always been a devoted Kurland fan, I found this book had more flaws than positives. As I admire this author, I do not intend this to belittle her work, so I will try to keep needless criticisms out of my review.
First, the story was so simplistically written that at times it seemed to be almost a young adult book. The sentences and paragraphs were short and choppy and long periods of time in the book were simply skipped. (This might work in some stories, but in this case I felt it caused the story line to lag.)
Secondly and related to this, I felt as if she could have told the story in half the time it took her as well. It seems that all the characters do is travel, get attacked, and travel some more (with repetitions of the same). (Again, this may work in some stories, but it seemed that there was so much more that could have been done to round things out.)
Third, the characters personalities are described as one way in the beginning and seem to have competely changed by the middle of the book. For example, the female main character is described as dangerous, fearless, and strong, yet at one point in the book she is so scared she can hardly sit on her horse? A monster does not scare her, but a big building does? Unfortunately, I saw this as a weak tool to make the female lead seem more vulnerable and more in need of the rather weak male lead (who could have displayed more backbone during most of the story while not taking anything away from his "big secret"). I have a hard time reconciling such poor character building with a writer who has done such a fantastic job of it in the past. The main characters seemed shallow and what romance there was seemed forced and rather childish. In fact, if I didn't know better, the difference in the quality of her characters, writing style, and plot techs is so glaring, it almost seems as if this was an entirely different writer.
Fourth, as mentioned by another reviewer, the story does literally stop cold, which is quite annoying considering I wanted to put the book down, but fought through to get some closure in the story.
Finally, while this is rather minor, some of the names of locations and people were so hard to spell and pronounce that without a glossary (a useful tool esp. in fantasy writing), the reader spends more time than needed trying to muddle them out while not forgetting what is going on in the story.
In summary, while Kurland has had admitted success with her historical romance series, I believe that her attempt at fantasy is only marginally entertaining and not to be considered a romance in any sense. Seasoned readers will probably not enjoy this one nearly as much as her past work. I agree with the other reviewer who suggested and hoped that Kurland would return to and stick with what she does best.

I could not resist getting the 2nd trilogy by Bantock but found it somewhat perplexing and or underwhelming. Maybe a book discussion group would help me understand this 2nd pairing better.

As always, the artistic value is great, but what happened to the story? Although I did not find The Gryphon & Alexandria as compelling as the original trilogy, it still had a decent story line to follow.
I have to say that I was deeply disappointed with how the story concluded. There was no real closure, and it seemed that the ending was rushed and not really well planned out. I basically felt like this book was strictly to showcase the art rather than the text content. Such a sad thing.
It had the making of being something so classical and great, but fell flat on its face. I would recommend that readers stick with the original Griffin & Sabine trilogy and stop there.
Illuminated?? I'm still in the dark..........2004-07-12
...either that or Bantock just forgot to hit the light switch. I must admit, despite the enigmatic characters, intriguing plot twists and refreshingly exotic artwork I've come to love from this series, what I was really holding my breath for with this final installment was clarification. Alas, it didn't deliver.
I have no gripes with the story, or the whole second series for that matter, up until the final two postcards. After six books and twelve years, did Bantock just write himself into a trap? Could it be that he lost direction in the end and saw no way out but to flash-cook up a conclusion in the guise of another puzzle for us to figure out? I doubt it, but I can't help feeling shortchanged. What exactly was Frolatti, and why was he so intent on keeping Griffin and Sabine subdued (wherever the heck they were)? After so much time, why was Matthew and Isabella's reunion so vague?
I love cliffhangers as much as the next person, but not when there's nothing more to look forward to. Disappointing.
The un-story.......2004-05-17
Frankly, I'm disappointed. The original Griffin and Sabine series had a wonderful spark of originality. This series is just too derivative.
I wanted to like this new trilogy. I like Bantock's art. There is so much in each picture that I can barely pull myself away for the text. I like the new plot elements that Bantock introduced. The cat with a name, Isabella's roar - these could have been rich new elements in the G&S mythology. They never went anywhere though, and left us re-reading the G&S story in somewhat different words.
If you're new to Bantock, the first G&S trilogy is your best bet. It's fresh, mysterious, and exciting. I just wish that this series could have deepened the mystery or sustained the excitement.

A Fantastic Read.......2007-06-22
Evan S. Connell doesn't care about preconceptions about what happened at Little Big Horn. Instead he weaves a narrative that explores and explodes every myth and legend surrounding the battle and everything leading up to it. The writing is absorbing and magnificent, and Mr. Connell takes his time to explore the lives of not only the leading participants, Custer and Sitting Bull, Gall and Sherman, but digs down in the dirt of the geography and even the lives of what most would consider secondary characters. He even lays down a fascinating side story about the fate of Custer's horse.
One of the best books I've ever read.......2007-05-22
I didn't find this book hard to follow at all. Even when I was sleepy I knew what I was reading about. It is the characters in this book and the back drop that brings this story alive. Connell does a great job of bringing unknown and well known characters to life and giving them more than just a name and place of death. What a story this is when you add up all the sum parts. And, I was able to get a bigger picture than just the death of Custard from reading this great book.
History with the eye of the fiction author.......2007-05-16
This is not a traditional history book and it seems that those who object seem to do so primarally on those grounds. There is no question that this book does not read or even flow as a typical history which in my view is a tribute to the creative author and a a risk taking publisher both of whom deserve high praise.
It is the reader rather than a historian who benefit from this treatment. The myriad of detail adds color and depth to the men's characters in a way that no regular history book has ever done. Yes the detail slows the narative and yes the author is all over the place, retrospection, current event, future writing all withing a page or two and yet somehow the whole thing holds together and the information is assimilated in a lasting and meaningful way.
The reasonings are so logical and fresh given the years and speculation and outright lies that they shine from the page. One example - why was Custer not scalped. Reasons given over the years run from Indian admiration for his courage to contempt. The author's take, Custer's hair was cut short for the campain, he was also going bald. In short his scalp was so unatractive as a trophy, that no one bothered.
The author engages in speculation and unlike regular historians, he readily admits when he is doing so. For example he openly shared his puzzlement as to why certain versions of Custer's death are rejected by one generation only to be viewed as the most credible by furture generations.
All and all this is a wonderful read and anyone with an interest in this history would benefit even if some of the facts shared conflict with previous ideas.
Custer remains an inegma but this book comes as close as we are ever likely to get to understanding him and the men who served with him.
Politics disguised as history.......2007-01-23
A morose and spiritless rendition of the plains Indian Wars, told from the perspective of a late 20th Century San Francisco mentality that sees nothing good in America, past or present. Contains a total of four or five pages worth of vivid and memorable prose - the "funnel of a tornado" image is unforgettable - nearly half of which is repeated on the jacket blurbs and photo captions. The bulk of the book consists of endless excerpts from hundreds of primary sources, most of which are not cited. (The bibliography is the most rewarding aspect of the book.) Clearly a fan of the Kurosawa-Rashomon school of epistemology, Connell repeatedly wastes the reader's time with hypothetical scenarios concerning facts and events of little importance, only to inform the reader in the end that we can't know for certain, and anyway it doesn't really matter. One assumes that had Connell been born a 19th Century Sioux, he would have spent his time castigating the tribe for having stolen the lands of whatever tribes claimed it before them. The one thing Connell is certain of, it seems, is that anything, even the savage inter-tribal warfare that went on for tens of millennia before the "wasichus" came on the scene, was preferable to the way of life that replaced it. This reviewer guesses that more than a few Native Americans past and present would take issue with such a conclusion, but what do they know.
huge disappointment........2006-10-21
i have had this book in my library for a long time and very much looked forward to reading it. a book that got rave reviews by critics, an outstanding novelist (evan s connell) writing about the legendary downfall of custer at little bighorn, how could i go wrong with this one. well, i guess that there is no such thing as a sure thing, because i found this book way too long & way too tedious. the author digresses all throughout the book, dropping the narrative and taking off on dull useless sidetracks that should never have been included. dozens and dozens of characters are introduced that you will never rememeber (and will never need to remember). strange and poor organization make this book a real dud. too bad.

Seller was quick and efficient. However, this quilt pattern is also in Quilt Through the Seasons, also by Eleanor Burns, which gives you many patterns for not much more money.
Beautiful & simple.......2003-02-08
This is one of the first few quilts I attempted. Ms. Burns has a knack for clear, concise instructions. One of the nice things for a beginner is that she includes pressing information - no dilemas as to what direction to press seams. Easy enough for a beginner, a more advanced quilter can play with fabric selection, fussy cutting, etc. The results are lovely.

I recommend this book for students ages 10-13 who are studying Martin Luther and the Reformation. (I actually read it with my 9 year old, who is pretty bright. But I don't think it will hold the attention of most 9 year olds.) The book gives you a real good feel for how it was for the clergy in this time period and the tension that existed, and continued to be a problem, in a revolutionary time period for Christianity. I did not really understand the historical difference between Protestantism and Catholicism until I read this book, which is historical fiction. It is a great supplement to your textbook reading, which doesn't really give you a feel for how things were for individuals entering the clergy and sympathetic to the reformers' cause. I give it 3 stars because it took a little while to get into the story, but it is worth it, and it isn't too long to get through it. It will also explain the important role John Wycliffe played in this time period.
