The Best You Should Know..........2001-12-16
I was introduced to this text a number of years ago when teaching in a community college in California. Every other English textbook I have seen since has dissatisfied me. Glazier's text can be used for classroom teaching or for self-paced instruction and can be adapted for any level from middle school through college. My students have commented after the first few lessons, "Wow -- nobody ever taught it to me this way!" Whether your student is advanced or needs extra help, this text can provide it all. I'll never use anything else for teaching grammar and mechanics. Denise Stickel
The Least you NEED to know about English.......2001-04-18
As an English teacher, I often find it difficult attaining grammar books that are accessable to all students. The Least You Should Know About English provides comprehensive lessons that students can understand, and also gives a wealth of exercises. The book deals with all grammar errors-fragments, usage, parallel structure, shifts in time, apostrophe-as well as proofreading exercies. For times you struggle with the correct answer, an answer key is provided. I found this book ideal in my high school classroom, since so many students lack the grammar background needed to be successful in writing.

WONDERFUL BOOK!.......2006-05-02
I have taught with this book many times. It has clear explanations of grammar basics, lots of exercises all through, and ALL the answers in the back, so students can self-educate to a certain extent. One of the finest books for college developmental English courses. It also has a superb bank of exercise and progress tests - available for instructors.

No need to buy Forms A, B, and C.......2006-06-22
I love this series -- it's straightforward and easy to teach in portions rather than having to go sequentially through the book as you do with other workbooks. However, I was ding-dong enough to buy all three forms -- A, B, and C. If you read the footnotes at the beginning of B and C, you'll note the instructions/content/topics are the same in all three Forms -- the only thing that changes are the exercises. For my purposes in a high school English classroom, only one Form would have been fine since I could have created my own additional exercises as needed.
The information covers basic parts of speech through essay writing and includes remedial through advanced types of exercises and topics. I particularly like the possessives and contractions as well as the doubling-before-suffix lessons. I can't say the information is rare, but it's nice to have it all in one handy reference that's genuinely full of practical instruction and lacks unnecessary narrative.

The Least You Should Know About This Book.......2007-07-26
Overall, this book gives a good review of the basics of English. It has many test examples. The only problem is, that many of the example answers in the back of the book are incorrect. I would think by the ninth edition, that they would have these problems corrected.
No-Nosense Guide to the Fundamentals.......2006-11-10
I'm using this textbook in a college level fundamentals of writing course, where its graphics-free, jargon-free approach is proving to be very helpful. Wilson and Glazier tackle the fundamentals of Standard Written English as writing problems that are common for intermediate-beginning writers of English. Each chapter covers a common writing problem and includes a clear, plain-spoken definition, examples, solution, and practice exercises. Basically, each chapter helps students to build a tool-kit that they can students use to repair their writing errors--the chapters also work as good reminders of "the basics" in other writing classrooms. The exercises are varied and interesting and tests appear every few chapters for review. Most of the book covers sentence and paragraph level issues. The last few chapters cover writing short essays.

Excellent choice for review of problems in written English.......1999-04-30
This text has aided me in setting up a variety of exercises for my own high school students. Although it is geared for college students, many of the concepts can be helpful on the high school level as well. The author's organization gave me a way to approach some core problems most English teachers meet. I shortened a few sections that met my special needs, taught them with my own examples, then had students create their own sentences. I checked their work for appropriateness, then used them for group work. Involvement made the students pay attention; and seeing their own sentences on the practice sheets and quizzes encouraged the young people to create better sentences. I have advised several of my former students in college to look for the book as an aid when they write about having writing problems that deal with usage and grammar on college papers. Also, I've shared the text with many of my teacher friends as an excellent review source. It's one of my most used reference books. I am forever grateful to finding this text in a college bookstore that I roamed through checking what was being used by college English classes back in the 80's. So happy to see it is still in print.

Simple and Effective for you or your students.......2007-03-31
I'm a nerd. My wife will agree, my friends will agree, and most of my Advanced Placement English students will agree. I had a pretty incomplete high school education as a result of attending a school that placed basketball success above academics at almost every turn. With no opportunities to study a foreign language in high school, it wasn't until I stumbled into a study skills class at TCU that I realized that I could increase my own vocabulary dramatically by studying Greek and Latin roots and stems. The reading I do for pleasure and for my profession is much more enjoyable and efficient if I don't have to constantly stop and flip through my dictionary to find out what the author is trying to convey.
While I've purchased dozens of vocabulary books over the years (many of them dealing specifically with roots and stems), this is one of the most direct and least pedantic volumes I own. Working your way through this slim book won't make you an expert on Greek or Latin (in fact, you may not even know which word parts are from which language), but I can assure you that you will have a thorough understanding of the way much of our English vocabulary "works". My students probably wish I wouldn't have discovered this book.
The Least You Should Know About This Book.......2001-03-10
This slim (150 page) reference is a good choice for high school students who wish to build their vocabularies for the SAT or other exams without having to learn any classical languages or use the dictionary too often. "Roots" refers to both prefixes and suffixes, and the languages of origin are not indicated, but each root is cross-referenced, exercises are provided on opposing pages, and there are pre and post study tests. The roots are listed alphabetically for easy reference on the left side page. Pronunciation guidance is given, there are synonyms and definitions, and words with multiple roots are cross-referenced. On the right side, facing page, fill-in-the-blank sentences provide opportunities to distinguish between the words presented on the left. Answers for all exercises are included in the back of the book. The pretests are all multiple-choice, the alphabetically ordered exercises are fill-in-the-blank, and the post-study tests have three parts: multiple choice, root and individual word definition, and correct/incorrect. Answers are provided for all tests. Other features include a guide to understanding etymological listings in dictionaries, notes on changes in root spellings, and a word index. Despite its ponderous title, I would recommend this for students or teachers who are looking for a well-organized guide to vocabulary development.
Fast and profoundly effective way to improve your vocabulary.......2000-04-10
An excellent resource on many of the root words that are found within the English language. Glazier offers a easy systematic approach that will allow you to continue learning words after you've conquered the basic meaning of word roots found in the text. An essential tool for both the teacher and student of English.

THE ONE, THE ONLY, THE REAL AUNT TERESA.......2000-10-22
Don't be fooled by pretty pictures and a plethora of pedagogy - this is the real deal if you want to teach English skills - from vocabulary through mini-essay assignments, and all the simple, useful grammar explanations and exercises in between. The Least You Should Know About English Form A (6th Edition) can't be beat - certainly not by Form A 7th Edition, which is an overblown, expensive imitation of those giant workbooks we all know and hate. Glazer's own intelligence, acerbic wit, style, and simple desire to help students shine through every word of instruction, every exercise in FORM A EDITION SIX, but are sadly compromised as she collaborates with another author in FORM A EDITION SEVEN. Get the real deal; don't settle for an imitation.
The Most You Need to Know About English.......1999-06-04
After being tracked into honors English in high school and upper level English in college, I knew nothing about writing a correct sentence. During a career change, I was assigned to edit technical manuals. I could no longer limp along on my poor grammar skills. This book was assigned to me in conjunction with a community college class in English.
Wow! This book made so clear all those sentence diagrams. I could write a sentence with a sense of confidence in my grammar skills. I am purchasing this book for my son, who is just entering Middle School, to give him the confidence in writing I lacked for so many years.
