Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great resource.......2007-09-19

Appreciate getting this product so fast and contiue to use it as a resource in my classroom for teaching reading.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource!.......2003-09-25

This book is an outstanding resource for all teachers of reading. It addresses a wide range of aspects of reading instruction, including phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and comprehension, to name just a few. For each area, the book includes several key sections: WHAT is ...?; WHY is ... important?; and HOW do you teach ...?

The layout is simple to follow, and it is packed with excellent activities. It is truly amazing how much information is included in this one book. Most importantly, the content of the book is soundly based in current research that is presented in a very accessible way. The activities are well-designed and realistic, and all the necessary information is included to be able to implement the activity in your classroom. Every teacher should have a copy of this book!

5 out of 5 stars CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook.......2000-10-02

CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook is a superior book to use as a reference in the classroom. It supports all areas of reading in grades K-8. Also it has wonderful advice about ELL students. Not only does this book have information about teaching reading, but it has hands on teaching methods that are proven practices. Some of the larger areas of the book are word structure, sound/print connection, decoding, spelling, vocabulary development, comprehension, reading and responding, and differentiated instruction. CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook greatly compliments Words Their Way, another must have book. One downfall about this book is the page numbering system, but as you work from the book it becomes less difficult.

My first book was given to me from the California Reading and Literature Project and I'm buying another copy for my son, who is also a teacher. I would recommend this book to any teacher interested in improving their knowledge of teaching reading. I often review my teaching strategies with this book before finalizing my lesson plans.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Kindergarten Resource.......2000-03-30

As a Kindergarten teacher, I have found the Starting Out Right book to be one of the best resources that I have ever used in my classroom. The text is very easy to read and very user friendly. The activities are great for any teacher making the changes in education. I only wish that I had found this book years ago. I would recommend this book for any teacher who is teaching reading strategies. In fact, my district is purchasing this book for ALL kindergarten teachers for our personal resource library.

          Book Description

Taking professionals and students step by step through conceptualizing, planning, and implementing an effective early literacy program, this book focuses on preventing reading difficulties and promoting success in at-risk 3- to 5-year-olds. The authors draw on extensive research and many years of influential work in real classrooms. A comprehensive framework is delineated for helping young children construct meaning from different kinds of texts, develop key oral language skills, and learn concepts about print and the alphabet. Ideas for tailoring instruction to the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse learners are accompanied by clear assessment guidelines. The book also offers practical, how-to-do-it suggestions for setting up literacy activities and arranging the classroom environment. Concluding chapters bring the authors' approach to life with vivid depictions of a preschool and a kindergarten classroom in action. Two invaluable appendices provide additional useful resources: reproducible sheets for conducting literacy assessments and a primer on phonics for teachers.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Very good........2007-06-26

I thought this book provided a lot of useful information for someone who is beginning work in this field. I do feel like a great deal of it is targeted more towards preschool than kindergarten, but definitely addresses the needs of "at-risk" students. The assessment suggestions were weak in my opinion, but a good starting point.

5 out of 5 stars Great Kindergarten information.......2007-08-25

A very practical source for new Kindergarten teachers. Absolutely easy to use and tailor to your own classroom needs. I used many of these ideas the first week of school and will continue to tap this source throughout the school year.

2 out of 5 stars Regurgitation of well-known facts and college textbooks factoids.......2007-08-05

This book may have been written by a real teacher, but you will learn absolutely nothing new about working with kindergarten kids from her. The authors regurgitate well-learned ideas and praise themselves for the "novelty" of incorporation of these in practice. This book may be somewhat well suited for new-graduates, that yearn for examples of how things work. But even new graduates eventually develop an aversion to the patronizing self-praising style of these authors. Dont waist your money, buy something else!

5 out of 5 stars good book, great tips.......2006-07-29

the book is well written, the authors know what they are talking about and the content is worth reading.

          4 out of 5 stars I give it a 4.......2006-07-17

The book had many wonderful ideas for kindergarten.....not so many for preschool age. I wish I had bought a used copy $$$$$.

          4 out of 5 stars Pretty nice.......2006-04-29

Great ideas, especially for getting to know your students and getting them prepared for coming to class on the first day.

The only thing I don't like is the layout. The pages are those cheap, off-white type sheets, which makes it slightly tougher to read. The pictures would have also been more helpful if they were in color.

Overall, an okay read and worth the $12.00

I would also recommend: Early Learning Environments that work, and Designs for Living and Learning.

          Book Description

Based on a parent book that is the best-selling literacy read on the market, this new volume addresses strategies for teaching reading and writing to children from Preschool to Grade 4. The author provides a solid foundation in the content of literacy instruction—phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—liberally spiced with her trademark “minilessons” and replete with children's writing samples. Included are a wealth of age-appropriate assessment tools, authentic classroom activities, and illustrative examples of how effective teachers engage children in preschool through primary grades in the captivating act of reading and writing. For practicing elementary school teachers seeking to improve their techniques for providing individual attention, assessment, and evaluation of student reading skills.
