2 out of 5 stars Outdated book with some trading wisdom.......2007-01-11

This book started out interesting but soon into reading it, became dated. Some interesting comments here and there but not enough to spend hours of your important life reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Studies in tape reading.......2006-09-20

The book is illustrative, it will give a good sense about what to check in the tape and how to use the information obtained from it.
It is amazing how many of these principles survived the test of time, in fact you can pin-point when "the experts" are saying what the book say almost literally.
It is a great information specially specially for very short trades (daily or swing). It is a good read to any one involved in the trading arena.

4 out of 5 stars Simplicity At Its Best.......2002-11-13

What Mr Tape (aka Richard Wychoff) writes is a simple way of looking at the market. He tape reads the market, looking at the size of transactions, and the number of transactions within spaces of time to determine turning points in the market place. Some writers may lead you to believe that Mr Wychoff was a chartist but in this work, and his others you truly see the difference between chart reading, and tape reading. If you want a book that explains the lost art of tape reading here it is. And for heavens sake, understand that tape reading and chart reading are totally different in terms of time, and real time analysis.

One cannot become a Tape Reader by giving the ticker absent treatment; nor by running into his broker's office after lunch, or seeing "how the market closed" from his evening newspaper.... He should spend twenty-seven hours a week at the ticker, and many more hours away from it studying his mistakes and finding the "why" of his losses. -from "Introductory" A 1910 classic of technical stock-market analysis, this is considered the most important work of one of the great market watchers of the early 20th century. It covers: . stop orders and trading rules . volumes and their significance . market technique . "dull markets" and their opportunities . and more. Nearly a century later, this primer on the basic laws of the market is still an invaluable resource for the broker or serious individual trader. RICHARD D. WYCKOFF (A.K.A. 4 out of 5 stars listening to NT Greek does help.......2007-03-31

Anyone serious about learning NT Greek should be reciting it and hearing it often. These c.d.'s get the job done. I have focused on listening to and reading 1 John over and over again to really drill the material, so it starts seeping in better. Pennington's voice and emphasis are fine, though in my opinion he speaks a little fast. I have noticed what apppears to be an occasional stress on the wrong syllable (e.g. theLEma sou in the Lord's prayer in Matthew) but this is no big deal. Learning to read Greek is very hard and Pennington has done a good job and speaks it pretty much the way any American would. Penny for penny this is a fine investment in learning Greek.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool to help learn pronunciation.......2004-09-28

"Readings in the Greek New Testament" is a welcome addition to the library of anyone studying New Testament Greek. While there are several excellent books on learning to read New Testament Greek (Koine Greek) but they all have the limitation inherent in any book about learning another language. No matter how well the author describes how to pronounce a word, where to put emphasis, or how to deal with diphthongs it is not the same a hearing it. On these two audio CDs Jonathan T. Pennington reads various passages in Koine Greek including the Sermon on the Mount, and the entire book of 1 John. If you have William Mounce's book "A Graded Reader of Biblical Greek" you will find all the passages mentioned there read aloud on this CD. While nobody is sure exactly how Koine Greek was pronounced, Dr. Pennington uses the most commonly accepted Erasmian pronunciation, which keeps the student in line with the majority of scholars. "Readings in the Greek New Testament" is highly recommended for anyone desiring to learn New Testament Greek and a great companion for anybody using William Mounce's book.

4 out of 5 stars My son loves the cassette and pictures........2006-08-19

My son is 2 1/2. My husband is fluent in italian and we are always looking for italian books, music, and toys. I fully recommend these books. My son likes having his own music to play and he loves finding things in the pictures. Using an italian dictionary with the book to play " I spy" is a wonderful part of story time.

The book is also easy enough for the non fluent relatives. Having the english version of the story right there is extremely helpful. My only reservation is that the book is in paperback. I would have given 5 stars if it was a hardback with thicker more kid resistant pages. But this book is definately worth buying even at full price!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great value -- easy and enjoyable way for kids to learn!.......2003-04-05

The Nicholas stories on tape are very easy to learn from because they are read slowly and clearly. They also keep the sentence structures pretty simple and repeat words and phrases a lot, which might be annoying for a book in your native language, but is very helpful to children learning a second language. My children don't like to listen to regular Spanish books on tape (often spoken quickly and the words seem to run together, more complex vocabulary, verb conjugations, etc.). However, they enjoy all the tapes in this series, even after we've heard them 50 times each.

My son is in kindergarten in a Spanish immersion school, so we always keep these tapes playing in the car to give him extra practice listening to Spanish. The tape has a dictionary portion with 50 words from the story, spoken first in English and then twice in Spanish. This might sound dry, but our kids really like this portion of the tape. Even our 20-month-old repeats both the English and the Spanish words during the dictionary section.

The story is read only in Spanish on the tape -- this has worked fine for us. However, the book is written in both Spanish and English, so if you wanted to enhance your child's understanding of what they were hearing, you could read them the story occasionally in English.

I would recommend first buying The Missing Cat and then A Visit to Grandma before buying The Five Crayons. (The music on The Five Crayons, while perhaps more culturally authentic, has some fast songs and is sung in a style that makes it a little more difficult to understand the words). In general, I've found that for my children to understand the songs, it helped a lot if I sat down with the book and read the English translations of the lyrics to them.

Overall, I'd say all that this series of books and tapes are a very good value -- lots of learning to be gained for a very small amount of money. If they made more tapes in this series, we would certainly buy them!

5 out of 5 stars This is a great way to learn........2000-03-19

We have both the German and Italian. Even my 4-year-old is learning. The story in each language is the same, it's nice to compare the different languages. After the story there are many useful words are said on the cassette (of course you can follow in the book too) followed by songs.

5 out of 5 stars A super book that's fun to read and teaches the language........1999-05-20

I like the format of the book with the repetition of phrases that are frequently used. Also liked the variations on the verbs which helps to teach grammer. In addition, the story is pleasant. I listen to the tape and read the book frequently to enrich my vocabulary and it doesn't get "stale". Also let my grandchildren listen and they are picking up words and phrases. I also have the "five crayons" and "visit to grandmom" which I will start on after I have mastered this book. (I also take an adult language course, this is just fun.)

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for handling every aspect of dyslexia.......2007-10-05

This book is a wonderful way to learn what dyslexia is scientifically, the symptoms associated with it, and how to handle the disability. It is very straight forward, gives realistic suggestions and links to wonderful websites. Above all, it stresses the positive aspects of dyslexia and all a person with dyslexia CAN accomplish; which is everything! With this book I now consider myself an expert on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars The book for people with Dyslexia.......2007-10-05

This is the best book for anyone that does not know about Dyslexia. Our son has been diagnosed with Dyslexia and we have given copies of this book out to all of his teachers every year. Just last year, his teacher said that after 20 years of teaching she didn't know of any children with Dyslexia in her class but after reading the book she can pick out at least 4.

    5 out of 5 stars Must-Have Resource.......2007-10-03

Dr. Shaywitz provides so much information that you won't want to just check this one out from the library--you'll want it for your bookshelf. It will be a well-used resource for many years!

4 out of 5 stars Overcoming dyslexia requires a structured program..........2007-09-30

...because, as the author asserts, dyslexia does not remit spontaneously. That is, once you have it, it is yours, more or less, for life.

This assertion holds true only if dyslexic children do not receive a structured reading-phonics program, such as the one offered by Kumon centers across North America. (BTW, Kumon instructors never refer to "learning disability" or "dyslexia," but instead, to "struggling readers.") This program is one of daily practice for about 20 minutes, and has embedded the three components of successful anti-dyslexia programs: practice, sight vocabulary, and phonics/phonemic awareness.

Curiously, Dr. Shaywitz mentions U. of Oregon DIEBELS programs, but is not acquainted with Kumon, which has an equally broad reach across the country.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Parents, Educators and Rdg Teachers! .......2007-09-27

This was an amazing book. There IS hope if you or someone you know is dyslexic! This is an encouraging book that empowers you to take charge and help your child, student, yourself... become a stronger reader!
Dispells many myths about dyslexia and what it is.
Focuses on strategies and curriculum based on strong research.
Describes how the brain works when it comes to language... and how brain scans have shown "improvement" in areas of the brain (left lobes) that have been activated after effective reading strategies and programs have been implemented.
It is filled with lots and lots of specific, practical ideas, resources and information about how readers learn to read and how we can help children (and adults) who have difficulty reading. Although the title refers to dyslexia, it is a great book if you want to understand how the reading process works and what you can do as a parent/teacher/caregiver to help your child overcome dyslexia,to solidify your child's reading skills if they don't have dyslexia, or to get them off to a great start reading in the early years. There are also specific descriptions of which signs to look for EARLY ON to detect any reading difficulties or dyslexia and address them then.

I used many of the ideas in the text with my own daughter who is learning to read... and also with a few students I've worked with who struggle with reading. I was surprised to find that many of the descriptions in the book, of the kinds of errors that children with reading difficulties or dyslexia make, exactly described some of the things I was seeing with the children I worked with.

This is a book I borrowed from the library first, then knew, without a doubt, I had to buy and have for a reference again and again!

    Book Description

Of all the books that have been written about the personal relationships of women and what to do about them, this is the most sound. It contains an inspirational message for all women, regardless of their age, background, or life experience. Like a family heirloom, it can be passed from generation to generation, as it is based on profound and lasting truths.  --Peggy Papp, M.S.W., The Ackerman Institute for Family Therapy
The Perennial Audio Bestseller from Harriet Lerner, Ph.D.

"Anger is a signal and one worth listening to" writes Dr. Harriet Lerner, in her renowned classic that has transformed the lives of millions. While anger deserves our attention and respect, women still learn to silence our anger, to deny it entirely, or to vent it in a way that leaves us feeling helpless and powerless.

In this vivid, engaging and eminently wise work, Dr. Lerner teaches women to identify the true sources of anger and to use anger as a powerful vehicle for creating meaningful and lasting change. The challenge of anger is at the heart of our struggle with intimacy, self-esteem, and joy. The Dance of Anger has inspired more "You changed my life" stories from both women and men than perhaps any other bestseller on the American scene today.

Read by the author on two cassettes.

5 out of 5 stars Put More 'I' in Your Life.......2007-10-08

When I read a book that inspires me, I mark the pages that I want to go back and study again. Of the 232 pages in 'The Dance of Anger', I turned down over 50 corners.
My first reading was in 1989, and I still go back and find reasons why this book made such an impact on my life. The biggest lesson was to put more 'I' in my life. Then, to remember, that I have a right to my thoughts and feelings; that no one else will take responsibility for me; that I cannot change other people; and, that the only person I have power over is myself.
The 'Dance' has to do with becoming your own person without losing others. 'Anger' is a tool for managing our relationships and helping us become our best.
I have recommended this book to many friends who are angry - at themselves, at their partners, at their families, at their employers - and, who have expressed a desire to improve their lives.
The book offers many excellent suggestions such as 'The Plan for Reshaping': think about your problem; seek temporary distance from it; don't place blame, be vague, or tell others how to feel; appreciate everyone's differences; speak up for yourself; and, use 'I'.
Take the challenge. Read the book. Become your own person.

    5 out of 5 stars For Once a Useful Self-Help Book!.......2007-10-07

I bought this book on a recommendation by a psychologist I was going to for help in my marriage. After I bought it I read it so throughly that I used a yellow highlighter to mark pertinent parts that really applied to the status quo of not only my husband, but my parents and the ways the under-functioning / over-functioning dynamics worked in various relationships.

In fact, after having this book as a tool to apply to my life, I didn't need to see the therapist anymore- the book gave me more direction than therapy did!

I told my fellow co-workers (mostly female) about this amazing book, and lent it to one, who then passed it on to another, and so on and so forth. When I got the book back afterwards, I was interested to find out that each one had used their own highlighter (in a different color). The book was a rainbow of colors from all the different passages that stood out as they pertained to each one.

I always point people I know to this book. No matter that everyone has different issues, this book can help clarify those persistent problems that never seem to get resolved no matter how hard you try.

I have read Ms. Lerner's other books, and although they are good, they don't really hit the nail on the head like this one did.

5 out of 5 stars positive, understanding guidance.......2007-09-09

A book for everyone, those hurt by their own anger or struggling with someone else's.

    5 out of 5 stars This is a classic for a reason!.......2007-08-15

There is so much sense in this book. It is good advice for men too.

4 out of 5 stars Very Insightful and Provocative.......2007-07-03

My counselor recommended this book to me when I was going through a separation and divorce. I recently bought this book as a gift for a friend who is going through a difficult time. Lerner's experience and insights are very helpful. The concepts presented are provocative in that it will make the reader think about how their family of origin's relationship dynamic can often be seen reflected in the present. A must read for anyone wondering why they keep making the same choices in partners and how to break the cycle.

The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Picked this book up with an interest in increasing my reading speed, but was disappointed when the book turned out to be one big ad for the Evelyn Wood Speed Reading Courses. Most of the book was devoted to informing the reader how fast and efficiently they could study, and how successful their courses are. There was very little instruction and what was there was vague. The book ended up being of negligible help to my reading speed.

Reading this book feels like talking to a used car salesman. Stanley Frank spends as much time in this (very thin) volume giving anecdotes on how wonderful Evelyn Wood speed reading is as he does giving any useful information about how to read faster. The book does give some rapid reading techniques, but fails to link them into a curriculum for actually training oneself to increase reading speed.

By contrast, I found Peter Kump's "Breakthrough Rapid Reading" (recommended by another Amazon Reviewer) to be quite helpful. Kump's book mixes the theory of Evelyn wood with comprehensive exercises to put these ideas into practice. Kump also gives the reader a way to record and track progress through the course.

The concepts of rapid reading are not difficult, the challenge lies in putting them into practice. Save your $7, skip Frank, and buy a book that will actually help you learn to read faster.

From reading the description for the one about it being adapted from "Remember Everything You Read", I thought I was getting two different books.

Author Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book's categorization to be sure that The Devil in the White City is not, in fact, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor. Burnham's challenge was immense. In a short period of time, he was forced to overcome the death of his partner and numerous other obstacles to construct the famous "White City" around which the fair was built. His efforts to complete the project, and the fair's incredible success, are skillfully related along with entertaining appearances by such notables as Buffalo Bill Cody, Susan B. Anthony, and Thomas Edison. The activities of the sinister Dr. Holmes, who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time of the fair, are equally remarkable. He devised and erected the World's Fair Hotel, complete with crematorium and gas chamber, near the fairgrounds and used the event as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims. Combining the stories of an architect and a killer in one book, mostly in alternating chapters, seems like an odd choice but it works. The magical appeal and horrifying dark side of 19th-century Chicago are both revealed through Larson's skillful writing. --John Moe

    Book Description

Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds—a torture palace complete with dissection table, gas chamber, and 3,000-degree crematorium. Burnham overcame tremendous obstacles and tragedies as he organized the talents of Frederick Law Olmsted, Charles McKim, Louis Sullivan, and others to transform swampy Jackson Park into the White City, while Holmes used the attraction of the great fair and his own satanic charms to lure scores of young women to their deaths. What makes the story all the more chilling is that Holmes really lived, walking the grounds of that dream city by the lake.

The Devil in the White City draws the reader into a time of magic and majesty, made all the more appealing by a supporting cast of real-life characters, including Buffalo Bill, Theodore Dreiser, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and others. In this book the smoke, romance, and mystery of the Gilded Age come alive as never before.

Erik Larson’s gifts as a storyteller are magnificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder, the killer, and the great fair that obsessed them both.

In The Devil in the White City, Erik Larson, author of Isaac's Storm, tells the spellbinding true story of two men, an architect and a serial killer, whose fates were linked by the greatest fair in American history: the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, nicknamed "The White City."

1 out of 5 stars Intriguing but Very Poorly Written.......2007-10-15

I couldn't wait to read this book because it had been recommended by so many people. But until I started reading it myself and talking about it, I didn't realize how many people started it and couldn't finish it.
Yes, I was one of those who finished it - because I like murder mysteries and I wanted to know what happened, but the other parts were so bad that I ended up using the book as my nighttime reading to put me to sleep.
The subject matter is intriguing, not only for the geography of the story, especially since I live in Chicago, but also for the fact that someone so gruesome lived here and murdered untold numbers of people, mostly women and children.
But the writer jumps all over the place - he consistently doesn't finish thoughts before he moves on to the next thing, little "asides" are inserted without any context, and the timeline jumps around in many places.
And there are unanswered questions, not the least of which is whatever happened to Holmes' 2nd wife and his child?
I'm guess I need to go back to all of those people who recommmended it to me to find out if they really liked it as much as they said they did, or were they just interested in the murder mystery. And how many just skipped to those parts to find out what happened.

4 out of 5 stars A method to his madness.......2007-10-12

The title of this review pertains not only to Dr. H.H. Holmes, the notorious serial murderer who is the focus of Eric Larsen's attention, but to the author himself. This is my second Larson book (after the wonderful "Thunderstruck") and it's not hard to see Larsen's M.O.. Take a historical event that by itself might not generate mass interest, and graft onto it a grisly story of murder -- plural murders if possible. Keep the tension constantly at the boiling point, and voila! A blockbuster.

Method writing aside, DWC was terrific to listen to. Larsen illuminates a little-known corner of American history, shining a light on fascinating people and different ways of looking at things. We experience Chicago, built on train traffic and malodorous slaughter yards. We learn about the architects, like Burnham and Root, who gave us the 1893 Columbian Exposition, also know as the Chicago World's Fair, and their dreams to outdo the Parisian fair of a few years earlier. We also meet Frederick Olmsted, in his early seventies, the designer of New York's Central Park, obsessed with and protective of his vision for the landscaped walks and peaceful lagoons that he imagined for the fair. We also learn of the desperation of the America architects and engineers associated with the fair to somehow outdo the French engineering achievement that was the Eiffel Tower. He learn about life in Chicago, loud, dangerous and exhilarating. What can you say about a town in which you can step off a sidewalk and get clobbered by a speeding train?

But there is a devil in the White City, as the fair was known. Dr H.H. Holmes, ever calm and with personality magnetic to young women, is also busy building. But his construction has an entirely different end than that of Burnham and Olmsted. For while the fair's designers want to bring pleasure to their customers and glory to their city and professions, Holmes wants pleasure and glory for himself. And no law or threatening angel will stop him from committing the most dastardly of crimes against the most innocent and unsuspecting of victims.

For those who know a little about American history, Larsen's constant cloaking of details might be maddening. I happen to know how the search for the engineering marvel came out. But for the rest of us, Larsen's unending teasers and cliffhangers propel us from chapter to chapter and disk to disk. Not to mention the promise of more lurid exposes in his Holmes sections. Larsen does a pretty good job of sticking to the facts, and he states that any material in quotes (not readily discernible in the audio book) is factual, and taken from extant sources. But he is not above a fair amount of creative license outside of the boundaries of the quotation marks. His description of the killer's thoughts and movements and of the death throes of his victims may owe more than a little to Larsen's imagination and informed speculation. But no matter. His suppositions are usually plausible and always gripping.

I don't know enough about the Chicago fair to know how close Larsen gets to its essence. He does tend to overemphasize conflicts, frustrations and setbacks. But one can't ignore the fact that the fair made some mad, some fabulously rich, some well-known and some prematurely dead. An age in which a forty-year-old can succumb to pneumonia -- a disease we now respect but hardly fear -- is one in which day-to-day stakes are high indeed. I have to confess to a bit of a thrill as I anticipated Larsen's recounting of tale after juicy tale of seduction, betrayal and destruction. And Larsen pleases from the first paragraph.

Lurid but not particularly gory, "Devil in the White City" is perfect for readers like me who love their history basted with real-life mystery, spiced with drama and just a pinch of mayhem.

5 out of 5 stars History and Mystery in a non-fiction page turner.......2007-10-11

Larsen deftly weaves an intriguing tale of the building of the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 with a story about a psychopath who commits several murders without detection during the same period. The book is chock full of information about prominent personages and inventions that changed the way we live today. It is a real page turner.

3 out of 5 stars Fact and Speculation.......2007-10-10

The Devil In the White City raises troublesome questions about what is factual and what is pure authorial speculation. At times the Larson even privaledges his own imagination as being closer to the truth than statements provided by key players in the book. (See the first three paragraphs on page 39 for an example.) Stronger documentation and clear indications of when the text was meandering into the imaginative realm would have helped this book tremendously.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, though leaves a bit to be desired...........2007-10-09

I am not a huge reader (too busy with college) but this book really caught my eye and, let me tell you, I made time for it once I realized how good it was. The book is incredibly informative and it is immediately apparent that the author did an ENORMOUS amount of research. As one of the reviewers says on a page at the front of the book, you will be left wondering how you DIDN'T know these stories already (for example, you learn about the first Ferris wheel.)

All of that said, I was hoping for much more information about the serial killer aspect... the author would devote maybe 4 pages worth of Holmes for every 10 pages worth of the Chicago Fair. I was mistakenly led to believe that the ratio was about equal and throughout the book, kept hoping that the Fair's historical accounts would become less frequent and instead would be replaced with more of the true crime aspect. At the end of the book, I came to find out that there simply wasn't enough information about the crimes to fill the book as most readers might have liked.

In short, this book is excellent and I highly recommend it. Just be forewarned, it is much more about the Chicago World Fair (and in more detail than most people probably prefer) and less about the serial killer and his
