1 out of 5 stars Turns my stomach.......2007-09-24

I'm very sorry I purchased this book. At the time I didn't realize it was written by Lynn Cheney. The entire time I read the book all I could think about was that I'd put more of my hard earned money into Dick Cheney's pocket and supported his propaganda. It makes me sick to have made such a purchase.

Teachers will love this book! It puts facts into a child's perspective
instead of just memorizing facts.

4 out of 5 stars Our 50 States: A Family Adventure Across Amreica.......2007-07-27

This is a great book to learn many interesting things about America and all the pages are done in colored drawing form which is great for children. I have gone through the book several times and my 7 year old grandson has viewed and read it more. A very good format to learn many of the facts you never knew about America's states.

5 out of 5 stars Our 50 States.......2007-05-23

What a great way to teach young children about US Geography. My daughter loves the map in the front of the book to trace out routes to new and exciting adventures. When she gets to the state her adventure ends, we read that page together. At 4, she really loves to learn about the states.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book of the Fifty States.......2007-05-13

I bought the book for my grandchildren and they love it. It is both entertaining and informative. Recommended it to several friends and now they have also purchased the book for their grandchildren. I am am planning to order another one of these books to keep in our home. Not only for when the grandchildren or other children visit but also for our own adult pleasure.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars fun but not comprehensive.......2007-06-02

Our family recently returned from a visit to Manhattan. We used 5 or 6 texts as well as this boxed set of walking tours. The set consists of 50 3-3/4 by 5-1/2 inch heavy stock cards and a folding master card that shows all the walks in the context of a five bouroughs map.

There are 5 walks in Central Park, 8 Midtown, 3 north of the park and 19 south of the Flatiron Building. Two walks cover The Bronx, two are in Queens, 5 in Brooklyn. Each walk card shows a map on one side, of about a square mile, complete with Metro stops and a trail marked out; on the other side the text (which is smallish, but I'm glad for that because there's such a wealth of information one could fit on each card!) that points out historic buildings and architectural features and tells a few stories about the character of the area as well as its characters.

It was very convenient to grab a few cards as we went out the door. Also, after we got back and looked at pictures, it was easy to find that tour and get some information about it.

The only complaint is predictable. Each walking tour could handle a booklet, so a few hundred words is, of course, inadequate. There is no information about restaurants; again, that's understandable, but maybe more information could be included on the maps?

I would buy them again.

3 out of 5 stars Heads Up When Considering This.......2006-12-14

I bought this to give as a Christmas gift. It arrived in used condition although it was sold as new. There was no wrapper so when I removed it from the shipping box, the contents spilled. There was a barcode sticker placed over the original barcode on the bottom of the box. As far as I can tell the contents are intact. This is the first time I have received anything from Amazon that was less than expected. I hope you don't have any similar experiences.

3 out of 5 stars Should have been titled City Walks: Manhatten.......2005-05-06

We've spent a lot of time in NYC, and I can attest from experience that each walk is well worth taking. The format is easy to use, with a master card showing the location of all the walks, and clear directions in the cards.

Each card has red circled numbers and letters on the maps, and NO explanation of what the numbers and letters signify. Are they bus and subway numbers? Are they points of interest? I'll figure it out when I'm there next week, but it would be nice to know ahead of time.

The boroughs are an important omission. We've been to Manhatten three times, and intend to concentrate on Brooklyn (the 4th most populous city in America, if it was a city unto itself) this trip. Many of the 50 Manhatten walks could be consolidated, to allow 10 walks for Brooklyn, and 5 each for Queens and the Bronx. Brooklyn has Prospect Park and Park Slope, Coney Island, and so much more I'm unfamiliar with.

4 out of 5 stars Love the idea - Wish there was more detail.......2005-01-24

What a great idea. 50 adventures that you can stick in your pocket and enjoy without looking like you are a tourist. I pulled out a few cards written about parts of the City I know and love to see if the author knows her stuff. Take card 15 - the Ms. Fay touches the high spots: Abingdon Square, Ottomanelli's, Zito's, Murry's Cheese, Rocco's Pastry and more. Walk these streets led by her map and prose and you'll have a wonderful visit. Flipping through the cards, I think every significant neighborhood has been captured. I know in warmer weather, I'll use a couple of her cards to explore Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens - boroughs that are a lot more of a mystery to me than Manhattan. Naturally, with a map on one side of a 4X5 card, there isn't much room left for text. Having said that, I wish we had more detail about each area - a small complaint. Maybe in V.2.0 some folded cards?

I collect anything NYC oriented and I am happy to add this pack of cards to my library but I wondered what the market is for these cards. My guess is that locals will use them to learn about streets outside their sphere. Out of towners will be able to stick one or two in a pocket and stroll through one of the most fascinating cities in the world. If you are a NYC fan, you need to get your copy of City Walks New York.

Do you "give a lot of importance to helping other people and bringing out their unique gifts?" Do you "dislike all the emphasis in modern culture on success and 'making it,' on getting and spending, on wealth and luxury goods?" Do you "want to be involved in creating a new and better way of life for our country?" If you answered yes to all three of these questions--and at least seven more of the remaining 15 in Paul Ray and Sherry Anderson's questionnaire--then you are probably a Cultural Creative.

Cultural Creative is a term coined by Ray and Anderson to describe people whose values embrace a curiosity and concern for the world, its ecosystem, and its peoples; an awareness of and activism for peace and social justice; and an openness to self-actualization through spirituality, psychotherapy, and holistic practices. Cultural Creatives do not just take the money and run; they don't want to defund the National Endowment for the Arts; and they do want women to get a fairer shake--not only in the United States, but around the globe.

On the basis of Ray and Anderson's research, about 50 million Americans are Cultural Creatives, a group that includes people of all races, ages, and classes. This subculture could have enormous social and political clout, the authors argue, if only it had any consciousness of itself as a cohesive unit, a society of fellow travelers. The husband and wife team wrote the book "to hold up a mirror" to the members of this vast but diffuse group, to show them they are not alone and that they can reshape society to make it more authentic, compassionate, and engaged. It is an idealistic call for a new agenda for a new millennium. --I. Crane

Book Description

Are You a Cultural Creative?

Do you dislike all the emphasis in modern culture on success and "making it," on getting and spending, on wealth and luxury goods? Do you care deeply about the destruction of the environment and would pay higher taxes or prices to clean it up and to stop global warming? Are you unhappy with both the left and the right in politics and want to find a new way that does not simply steer a middle course?

In this landmark book, sociologist Paul H. Ray and psychologist Sherry Ruth Anderson draw upon thirteen years of survey research studies on more than 100,000 Americans, plus more than 100 focus groups and dozens of in-depth interviews. They reveal who the Cultural Creatives are and the fascinating story of their emergence over the last generation, using vivid examples and engaging personal stories to describe their distinctive values and lifestyles.

The Cultural Creatives care deeply about ecology and saving the planet, about relationships, peace, and social justice, about self-actualization, spirituality, and self-expression. Surprisingly, they are both inner-directed and socially concerned; they're activists, volunteers, and contributors to good causes more often than other Americans. But because they've been so invisible, they are astonished to find out how many others share both their values and their way of life. Once they realize their numbers, their impact on America promises to be enormous, shaping a new agenda for the twenty-first century.

What makes the appearance of the Cultural Creatives especially timely is that our civilization is in the midst of an epochal change, caught between globalization, accelerating technologies, and a deteriorating planetary ecology. A creative minority can have enormous leverage to carry us into a new renaissance instead of a disastrous fall. The book ends with a number of maps for the remarkable journey that our civilization is embarked upon: initiations, evolutionary models, scenarios, and the elements of a new mythos for our time. The Cultural Creatives offers a more hopeful future and prepares us all for a transition to a new, saner, and wiser culture.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring but Not Useful a Marketing Guide.......2007-03-13

This book was read in a women's book circle, which was the seed for a business network designed especially for Cultural Creatives -- business people who cared about more than just the bottom line.

[...]

This he book been an incentive for self-identified Cultural Creatives to find like-minded people; however, it has not been useful in understanding the demographic for realistic niche marketing purposes. Unfortunately, Cultural Creatives themselves tend to be very diverse in income, sex, age, etc. -- as the study results in the book show. This makes the Cultural Creatives very difficult to treat as a target market as the defining characteristics of Cultural Creatives are nearly completely invisible. I've learned that the best way to find out if someone is a Cultural Creative is to have a conversation with them versus trying to pin them down using any kind of marketing database.

Anyone interested in serving the Cultural Creative marketplace can use this book to get a general idea of what this demographic looks like, but should look elsewhere for useful, more targeted marketing advice.

The book is, if nothing else, inspirational for those of us looking for other Cultural Creatives. It can be further inspiring to Cultural Creatives in business accompanied with the documentary "The Corporation.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-06-06

This book is not really about creative people. Instead, it's about a host of left-wing causes such as environmentalism, new age consciousness and feminism. So, it's really a book about left-wing politics.

Also, to talk about this phenomenon as "new" is a bit of a misnomer. For 100 years, intellectuals such as Djilas have talked about the "new class" and its excessive influence over public life. Perhaps the current dominance of the political left over culture industries is inadequate for the authors, such that they would prefer a one-party dictatorship.

However, this would be hard for them to do. If there is in fact a new development in recent years, it is the rise of new media such as the internet which have (in part) broken the one-party monopoly of the left-wing media.

Incidentally, at 370 pages the book is way too long and tedious. Also, the research is typically poor--e.g. the unsupported chart on p. 211 that claims convergence of social and consciousness movements over the last 40 years--whereas the same converged left-wing bunch has been lobbying for this whole panoply of issues for decades. Another example is the facile comparison between biological evolution and the life cycle of civilizations on p. 248.

1 out of 5 stars Good to prop up the short leg of a table or as a hot plate.......2005-09-10

Beside the fact that time has long passed this book by, it is utterly unreadable given the tedious writing. The term "Cultural Creative" is so self-congratulatory and pretentious as to be nauseating. This is strictly for San Franciscans lost in a time warp.

4 out of 5 stars becoming obvious.......2005-06-07

If you dislike modern society, read this book to find out why.
You'll also learn that there are millions who think similarly. You'll read about the three main segments of the population: Traditionals, Moderns, and Cultural Creatives.
We all begin as Traditionals, grow up and become Moderns, and then mature to become Cultural Creatives. When we're Traditionals, we agree with whatever authority figures tell us. When we're Moderns, we agree with whatever society tells us. When we're Cultural Creatives, we rely on our conscience.
American society went through these developmental stages in the 20th century. Americans began the 20th century as Traditionals. After two world wars, Americans became Moderns. The protest movement of the 1960's began the process of creating the Cultural Creatives.
Most Americans remain Moderns, living their lives without concern for the global problems that their lifestyles contribute to. Some Americans remain Traditionals, believing most of what their religion and government tells them. A growing segment of Americans are Cultural Creatives, realizing that wasteful lifestyles contribute to global problems and corrective actions are needed.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of data; probably worth 3.5 stars.......2004-11-15

This book provides a model of the US adult population with extremists at two ends and the term "cultural creatives" (CCs)introduced. The authors also provide a short "test" to see if you qualify as a CC. This is not really a new idea. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs has as the apex of his pyramid, "Self-Actualization." This corresponds to Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory where seeking the positive is considered qualitatively different from seeking to avoid the negative. In addition, the Normal distribution indicates that there will be declining numbers of persons in groups deviating from the Mean (average) in a non-linear way (i.e. in accordance with the standard deviation of the distribution). However, the authors do provide lots of backup material and some interesting observations on the nature of the CCs. Some of them seem a bit far out to me--too left wing rather than balanced. I think a reader's reaction to this book will primarily lie in his or her psychological and political positions on the human spectrum. Thus, there are liable to be highly divergent ratings of this book from various people. It is, by the way, a rather heavy tome (literally). My favorite quote from it is: "The media have announced a hundred of the last ten medical breakthroughs" on page 223.

Kit created to collect the 50 states quarters

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars It never holds your quarter.......2007-08-09

I ordered more than one 50 States Quarter Folders and thought they would hold the quarters collected. When they were finally delivered to me, I found the dented holder could hold nothing and threw them away.

1 out of 5 stars Quarters won't stay in - buy a different product.......2007-08-04

Ditto what others have said. My son has this folder and the quarters will not stay in the plastic slots. As a result most of his collection has disappeared. There are other folders available that are much better. The best seem to be ones where you just press the coin tightly into a cardboard cutout.

4 out of 5 stars Statehood Quarter Folder.......2007-07-29

I like the folder very much as I am collecting the statehood quarters for my grandchildren. The booklet inside gives them lots of information on our United States. The only drawback I have seen is sometimes the quarters pop out. Other than that, it is easier to use than the traditional folders for coins.

4 out of 5 stars keep glue handy.......2007-06-13

The folder itself is nice with a booklet that gives information about all states but inserting the quarters just doesn't work. They don't just "press in" - they pop right out and you have to glue them in if you want them to stay in. We even tried hammering them in. I bought it for my grandson but there was no way he was getting the quarters to stay in.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless - coins all fall out.......2007-05-16

This coin folder is a ripoff. The coins will not stay in the spaces and fall all over the place. This is a basic specification for a coin holder and this one is so bad that it should not have been placed on the market. Amazon should not sell this product.

1 out of 5 stars The Official U.S. Mint 50 State Quarters: Complete 100 Hole.......2007-09-28

I was disappointed in this product. The cover lillustration is nice but the book itself was a quite thin and flimsy cardboard. In addition, our son has trouble getting the quarters into the holes. After putting only about half of the quarters in, the book looks battered and worn. I would suggest looking for something better made.

5 out of 5 stars Good for casual collectors to have........2007-06-08

I collected coins for awhile in high school but fell out of the habit. Getting one of these complete collection booklets is an easy way for the casual coin collecter to have an easy formal way to collect the State Quarters....

2 out of 5 stars Looks great, works so-so.......2007-03-10

I just purchased three different 50 State Quarters books to try as the quarters fall out of the one I have. The other reviewers who weren't happy with this item are spot on. This is the worst of the three.

It looks great and has a lot of useful information about each state and the order of release. But the holes are too small though I didn't need a hammer to push the quarters in. It's clear given the tight holes and the force needed to get the quarters in that it would only be a matter of time before I ripped through the paper thin cover.

This is personal taste, but I don't like that the P and D are in totally separate groups rather than having both coins for each state together.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Coin Folder.......2006-11-13

My son really enjoys looking at his state quarters in this folder. I do need to help him put in the quarters, but that is no problem. Once the quarters go in, it doesn't fall out.

1 out of 5 stars I HATE this thing!.......2006-06-10

This album is extremely attractive and informative and has storage space for a complete set of 100 quarters (both P and D mint marks for each state). Unfortunately, it's a nightmare to use.

You'd think the U.S. mint would know what size their own coins are and be able to make an album they would actually fit in, wouldn't you? Well, guess again! It's just about bloody impossible to get quarters all the way into these slots so that they're firmly lodged and don't fall right back out again. I have only found two ways to accomplish this: 1) pound on the coins with a heavy object (obviously a disaster for preserving either them OR the album in good condition) or 2) painstakingly shave away a little bit of the cardboard around the edge of each slot (extremely tedious and time-consuming, as well as very hard to do without puncturing the flimsily thin backing material).

I am now in the process of shopping for an album that doesn't require me to risk damaging my quarters in order to get them into it. When I get one, this thing will go straight into the recycling bin. I couldn't bring myself to inflict it on some other unsuspecting person.

P.S. No offense to Burton W. Ostrower, but I think he MUST have been reviewing a different album. Mine does not have a "top plastic cover," and the coins are NOT viewable from both sides as he said. (I wish!) I would report the inaccuracy to Amazon if I knew how, because I hate to see people be misled. But the report form only allows reporting of "inappropriate" material, and there's no place to write comments there.

I ordered Official Whitman Statehood Quarters Folder: Complete 50 State Set 1999-2008 to my friend as a gift. She said this is a junk and cheating product. This is because its design is ugly and inside has only 40 slots which is 1999-2006. And I agree with her.

4 out of 5 stars Good lay-out, but hard to use.......2005-09-21

Since I'm not a hard-core coin collector, I like the fact that this folder only has one space per state (i.e., not one space for each mint). However, I found it very difficult to insert the quarters into the slots so that they would stay put.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this item whenever possible.......2005-09-04

The holes are way to difficult to fit in quarters. The booklet looks very cheap. The cover design is different from what you see here. The interior looks boring and ugly.

Very, very disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Too difficult.......2004-07-21

The quarters are very difficult to fit in the folder. I would look for a different one to use.

Book Description

A half-century of Wall Street history as seen through the lives of its most illustrious family
This compelling new narrative from bestselling author John Rothchild tells the story of three generations of the legendary Davis family, who rank among the most successful investors in the history of the Street. With a novelist's wit and eye for telling detail, Rothchild chronicles the financial escapades of this eccentric, pioneering clan, providing a vivid portrait of fifty years of Wall Street history along the way. Rothchild shadows the Davis family's holdings through two lengthy bull markets, two savage and seven mild bear markets, one crash, and twenty-five corrections and, in the process, reveals the strategies behind the family's uncanny ability to consistently beat the markets.
The Davis Dynasty begins in 1947, the year Shelby Davis quit his job as a state bureaucrat and, armed with $50,000 of his wife's money, took the plunge into stock investing. By the time he died in 1994, he had multiplied his wife's original stake 8,000 times! The story continues with his son, Shelby, who established one of the most successful funds of the past thirty years. The final characters in this enthralling family saga are grandsons Chris and Andrew. Both surrendered to the Davis family passion for investing and both went on to earn reputations as investment luminaries in their own right.
John Rothchild (Miami Beach, FL) co-wrote the blockbusters One Up on Wall Street, Beating the Street, and Learn to Earn with Peter Lynch. He is the author of Survive and Profit in Ferocious Markets (Wiley: 0-471-34882-1), A Fool and His Money (Wiley: 0-471-25138-0), and Going for Broke. He has written for Harper's, Rolling Stone, Esquire, and other leading magazines and he has appeared on the Today Show, the Nightly Business Report, and CNBC.

5 out of 5 stars Family history and market history in one.......2007-02-15

This is one of the better investment books on the history of post-WWII stock investing. While there are a number of absolute classic books on the 1920s and earlier periods (Lefevre's "Remininscenses of a Stock Operator", Galbraith's "The Great Crash", Brooks's "Once in Golconda", to name just a few), there aren't as many great books on recent history. This is one of them, however.

The Davis family, starting with Shelby Collum, is used by the author as a vehicle to traverse the history of the stock market from WWII through the late 1990s. Followers of mutual fund investing in the past 25-30 years are probably more familiar with Shelby Davis the younger, than with his father Shelby Collum. But it was the elder Shelby that made the family fortune. His is one of the great fortunes ever created strictly through long term investment and is a story of buying extreme value and holding for very long time periods. It's also about venturing into uncharted waters -- like being one of the first to invest in Japan.

This theme is carried forward to the story of his son, the well-known former portfolio manager of New York Venture Fund. Shelby the younger came of age in the go-go sixties and picked up some bad habits. The savage bear markets that followed chastened him and forced him to revert to a style of investing closer to his father's in the mid 1970s. The tensions between them created a sort of competition with the son posting a tremendous record with his mutual fund vehicle, New York Venture.

The relationship between father and son would be best described as "semi-estrangement." It took Shelby's sons, Andrew and, particularly, Chris to reconcile their father and grandfather's differences. The human story is interesting, and the elder Shelby was quite a character. I found the chapter on Chris's "apprenticeship" with his grandfather fascinating -- perhaps the best part of the book. In short, Shelby the elder is getting old and wants to retire and turn his portfolio over to a younger generation for management, but because of the bad feelings he doesn't know how to approach his son. And it's clear that he greatly admires the record his son has build with NY Venture. So he talks grandson Chris Davis (now the co-manager of NY Venture and Selected American Shares) into inventorying his portfolio. Chris then brings his father into the picture and the two of them work long hours reading through the 5 decades of trades and holdings. The portfolio at that time was close to $1 billion.

The story ends with the younger Shelby's semi-retirement and turning the reins over to sons Andrew and Chris, and Ken Feinberg, who continue with this style of investing. The mutual funds and separate accounts run by the Davises typically have portfolio turnover rates less than 20%, often less than 5%. This means they buy and hold, and hold, and hold. However, it's the price they pay for stocks that really juices their returns. The pigeonhole mentality at mutual fund rating agencies like Morningstar don't adequately describe Davis funds because of this. The Davises buy deep value, but after a stock recovers from whatever temporary trauma caused the bargain price, they continue to hold as long as the company meets their growth expectations. So Morningstar, for example, will call them a "blend" fund, which seems to say absolutely nothing about such a distinctive methodology as the one the Davises follow. This book is an elucidation of the emotional discipline and intellectual process behind this style of investment. Both the book and the investment style are highly recommended by this reader.

5 out of 5 stars Combination biography and investment ideas.......2002-02-27

I personally don't care for dry investment books. I read for entertainment. This book provides a great combination as it is a biography of a family steeped in money management and also gives tips of how they were able to grow their fortune.

The book traces the investment history of Shelby Davis to his son to his grandsons. Shelby had family money through his wife and starts investing shortly after the crash in '29. Like many people, I assumed the market has been a somewhat continual climb with some setbacks. This books traces the history showing the many periods of lackluster stock value growth and how most Americans shunned the stock market for bonds. Quite a difference from today.

The original Shelby was a miserly value investor who never spent an extra dime. His investment hits were insurance stocks when no one liked that industry and some prudent investments in Japan, also mainly in the insurance industry. By leaving these investments to compound for years, Shelby built a great fortune. But the hidden engine behind this vast growth was the use of margin to leverage his returns. The original Shelby eventually grew his fortune to over a billion dollars in value.

Shelby's son Shelby did not work with his father until late in his life but eventually became a money manager of some renown also. His philosophy was similar but different and his large money winners tended to be from other industries. The book ends with the sons of Shelby Jr. taking over their father's money management firm and establishing their own identity.

Along this 70 year history, you will learn about the markets and the different stages of development over the years. A significant amount of time is spent in the 60s and 70s as both of the Shelby's were investing at that time. I strongly recommend this book if you have interest in the market and its history.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2002-01-30

John Rothchild has written a fascinating biography of one of Wall Street's most successful and least-known investors, Shelby Davis, who turned a $50,000 initial investment in 1947 into $900 million, almost exclusively by buying and selling insurance stocks. Part character study, part Wall Street history, Rothchild's book reads like a novel, with an accessible and witty narrative. Of special note is the concise summary of Davis' investment strategy, which rivals Buffettology in its simplicity and common sense. In Rothchild's hands, Davis' life becomes a fun read, no matter what your business interests, and we from (..)recommend this book to all curious readers.

4 out of 5 stars More Than a Dynasty.......2001-10-28

While this is not a "how to" book it certainly is "why to" book. It's a look at remarkable family that gives anyone who has never invested in the stock market a perfectly good reason why they should! Patience and long term results are a philosophy that has worked well for them over the years. It's a look at a concept and philosophy handed down by the patriarch of the family that wealth should not be handed down, but earned. Spanning 4 generations, Rothchild gives the reader a remarkable insight into a family that works hard and plays hard. Even with this success the family has given back through many philanthropic endeavers including millions to the United World College. The college, with 10 campus' world-wide endeavers to bring students of different cultures and backgrounds together to foster understanding of each other in a world that desperately needs it.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2007-05-07

I bought this book because I was looking for short hikes for our family with elementary-aged children in all the titled Utah Nat'l parks. It does do a good job of describing the hikes in very great detail, how to get to the trail head, etc. Each hike is rated according to it's difficulty and child-friendliness and length of time to complete. This is all very good and helpful. However, I discovered after the fact that most of this same information is available on the National Park Service website and the brochure available for free at the visitor center, including some that aren't in the book.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Hiking Guide.......2007-03-13

I purchased this book prior to a trip to Zion and Bryce National Parks. I've read a number of hiking guides before and found this one particularly helpful. The author gives excellent details both on the difficulty of the hike and what you can expect to see. After hiking most of the trails in both parks, I can vouch for the accuracy of the guide and found the information very useful.

The sole drawback is the lack of color photos which would add far more impact to these descriptions. This is a common failing of this type of book but it a shortcoming even so.

Award-winning photographer Michael Cunningham collaborated with New York Times bestselling novelist Connie Brisco to bring us a beautiful photo essay book about women over 50.

Jewels profiles 50 women who are African-American. Cunningham's photos, as in his fabulous Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats, captures their strength and spirit, their energy and enthusiasm, and their pride and confidence.

Connie Briscoe adds her crisp prose from interviewing the women to show why each one is a "jewel."

Some names I recognized--people in the public eye like actors, poets, public leaders such as actress Ruby Dee, S. Epatha Merkerson (the detective on Law and Order), Hattie Winston (the snappy nurse on TV's Becker) and of course, Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of Children's Defense Fund. Some others are company presidents and leaders in business, education and the community.

Most of the women gave a lot of credit for their upbringing for making them who they are. They received love and stability--and were made to believe they could shoot for the stars. These women seized opportunity, while others created it.

Many overcame humble beginnings, early death of parent, divorce, and disability. The key for many seemed to be the unwavering expectation that they do well--regardless.

"My life is proof that you never know what you have inside you until it's called upon. I know I didn't." -- Patricia Banks, age 71.

Just imagine the changes someone like Billie Allen, 81, actor and director, has experienced as a black person--and as a black woman in her years.

One of the 50 is Faith Childs, 55, a literary agent who deemed that much of what is written does not represent her African-American experience--and plays more on the negative stereotypes. She represents authors, not just black writers--and looks for more good writers to tell good and accurate stories.

This is a wonderful book for black families to encourage their children and understand what others have done who have gone before. This is a stunning book for its photographs complemented by heartfelt stories. This is an important read for all women over 50. It's a book you can learn from -- I did.

Armchair Interview says: Winners of hard-won battles, these 50 women tell stories of achievement on all levels.

Honestly, for under $10 you only need to get one bargain to make this book worthwhile. You should have no trouble doing that. This book has a lot of hits in it. That is especially helpful in Maui, where you can spend a lot on very mediocre food sometimes. This is easily the best guide to eating on a budget in Maui.
