Nigella Bites--the title is taken from Nigella Lawson's Style Network cooking show of the same name--is the third book from British Vogue food editor and New York Times food columnist Nigella Lawson, a force of nature all her own. Her other books include How to Eat and How to Be a Domestic Goddess. Fans of the TV show will find all these easy-to-follow recipes familiar, and the book is even designed with pages for note taking at the end of each section.
Nigella Bites is divided into chapters that include "All-Day Breakfast," "Comfort Food," "TV Dinners," "Party Girl," "Rainy Days," "Trashy," "Legacy," "Suppertime," "Slow-Cooked Weekend," and "Templefood." "Templefood" refers to the "body as a temple," and Lawson shares what she calls "restorative" recipes, like the raw egg and brandy hangover cure called Prairie Oyster. Hot and Sour Soup and Gingery Hot Duck Salad are also present and accounted for.
It's all self-referential. Lawson (her chapter introductions are printed in 26-point type for the hard of seeing) holds nothing back about what she likes, how she overindulges, how she works her lifestyle into the kitchen and onto the table. It's encouragement by example, with a practical twist. You aren't going to spend hours in the kitchen midweek. That's a reward you save for the weekend. But there's plenty of deliciousness to be had midweek as well, and Lawson's there to help you along your way. --Schuyler Ingle

In Nigella Bites, Nigella shares her favorite recipes that are easy to make after a busy day at the office, perfect to linger over during a lazy weekend, or fun to make with kids on a rainy afternoon. All the recipes are delectable to read, dreamy to look at, and, of course, delicious to eat. Whether cooking Pasta E Fagioli or baking Orange Breakfast Muffins, Nigella knows just how to achieve maximum flavor with minimum effort.
Customer Reviews:
Some great recipes, some poor ones.......2007-05-24
I own several of Nigella's cookbooks and this one has some great recipes, like the chocolate cloud cake, ham and coca-cola and chocolate-lime cheesecake. But I have had really bad luck with some too. The Southern Style Fried Chicken recipe calls for you to poach the chicken first, which I found overcooks it and leaves you with soggy not crispy chicken in the end. A lot of the desserts are overly sweetened with sugar and I had to cut back on it. Some of the cakes are dry too. I am happy that there are so many gorgeous pics of the dishes so I know what the end result should be. Icould live without the multiple pics of her, though I know that helps the books sell. I also enjoyed reading her short little introductions to almost each recipe. I'd recommend this, but only as a used item to save some $ for more consistently good cookbooks.
she does it again.......2007-05-18
what can i say, i love nigella!! to be honest her books are like a novel to me, she is an excellent writter who likes to entertaing in every second, i own this book and forever summer and i am looking forward to get the other ones , i love the illustrations and the simplicity , if you love to cook i recomend it!
Love Nigella but..........2007-05-12
I own almost every one of her books, all have decent recipes, some more than others. You either love her writing style or you don't. I do. Much is left to your own interpretations. If I were to recommend a Nigella must have it would be Feast and Domestic Goddess. I cannot count the times I have made the granola and fairy cakes recipes from those volumes.
Fun recipes to share with friends & family, esp if you love Nigella.......2006-12-15
If you're a fan of Nigella's show, either the British version, or the American import, you will love this cookbook. A lot of the recipes come directly from the tv episodes. The cookbook is lined with great chapter intros that share a bit more about what makes Nigella tick.
I think I speak for all Nigella fans when I say we are 50% drawn to her recipes, and 50% drawn to Nigella herself, the way she cooks effortlessly, without worry or want, or her perspectives in life, which remind us to cherish time with friends and family, and not to sweat it in the kitchen.
I've purchased a number of Nigella cookbooks, and this one has the most post-it sticky notes coming out of it!
I know you'll enjoy this cookbook as much as me!
Comfort Cooking........2006-10-20
I love to cook and I have an absolute fetish for cookbooks. This one satisfied those loves perfectly. I've tried about five of the recipes so far and they are wonderful, probably because her recipes make no attempts at being low-fat or healthy. I love her writing about the food--it's down-to-earth, sexy, and practical. The photography is gorgeous and the layout of the book into categories like "Party Girl," "Comfort Food", etc give the book added character instead of the regular divisions like "Starters," "Desserts," etc. This book isn't for the constant health food fiend, or even for the beginning cook (though the recipes really aren't difficult, some are quite involved).

An outstanding collection of Rachael Ray's best 30-Minute Meals, now in one volume. Features over 150 meals selected from 8 of Rachael's best-selling titles.
Customer Reviews:
RACH MAKES SOME YUM-O DISHES.......2007-09-17
Includes some of Rach's best recipes. I love 30 Minute Meals because I do not have the time to be in the kitchen all day. Rachael has some really creative ideas (I love the everything chicken) and tips. She also isn't uptight like most of today's celebrity chefs are. I met Rach last year and she behaves exactly the same way off camera; always smiling and warm. I hope in the future she will release some DVD / Book sets together because it would make my life so much more easer. Some of the recipes do take more than 30 minutes to prepare but it's still quicker and easier than going out. I no longer go out to dine (at least not in casual restaurants) because the service is always abominable and the quality is always lousy. Because of Rach I am able to stay at home with my loved ones and cook great dishes, just like her!
Yummo!.......2007-09-12
The recipes that I've tried so far have all been super delicious and easy. I like how some ingredients have a couple alternates listed, like using tabasco if you don't have chili powder. However, most recipes require me to purchase at least one ingredient that I don't have on hand. Also, another title for this book could be 30-dishes-to-clean-meals...thank goodness my husband does most of the washing!
love it!.......2007-07-05
i mark all the good ones with post it notes and it's pretty much full of them!!
Not quite 30 minutes, but still great. .......2007-06-27
I have to agree with some of the other reviewers that a lot of these recipes (unless you're a pro, which I am not) take longer than 30 minutes. However, they definately take less than 60 minutes, which I'm still very pleased with. Plus, everything I have cooked so far is just DELICIOUS! I started getting sick of making things out of cookbooks for just "so-so" meals. This cookbook, however, has restored my faith and I always look forward to trying a new recipe out of it.
Great as always.......2007-05-29
Love this book as always it is an easy read so I can follow it, now if my daughter will just leave it where I can find it as she love to see anything with Rachael Ray
Book Description
This book provides groups with 1,001 engaging and thought-provoking icebreaker questions to start and sustain meaningful conversations.
Customer Reviews:
Great transaction!.......2007-10-15
Book was delivered promptly and in good condition. Some questions were helpful. Not all were appropriate to ask however unless you really know the person.
Good Choice !.......2007-09-23
This is a great book for just about any type of gathering. The questions are provocative and entertaining.
This is a great conversation starter..........2007-06-27
I love this little book of questions! We have used it several times with friends and let them choose the category of question, which range from light and easy to deep spiritual matters (or something like that) and then randomly pick a number within that category. There are 100 questions in each. That way, no one gets to pick their question. Others often chime in and answer the question after the primary person has answered, so it becomes kind of a conversation 'game' and lets you also get to know the other people in ways you might not otherwise have done. I would highly recommend the book!
Not really cocktail party talk.......2007-06-19
It really IS a complete list of conversation starters, but most are not ones one would use at a cocktail party. Many are excellent for engaged couples or other relationships where deeper intimacy is desired. I guess the name is correct that it covers all kinds of occasions, but they certainly aren't questions one could use at "any" occasion! The more intimate ones probably should be required of any couple who are getting serious!
A really helpful little book.......2007-03-08
This is a great book. I use it during the ESOL classes as questions to get people sharing verbally and then writing their responses. We don't use it every season rather as a way to break up the sameness of text book teaching.
Book Description
A feast for the eyes as well as the palate, this collection from media favorite Toba Garrett is available again.
"The mouth-watering photos are enough to send you running to the store for baking equipment and ingredients...[these are] gorgeous works of art. A wealth of photographs and illustrations ensures that even novices will have success with their cookie-making marathons."--New York Daily News
"Marvelous book...Superb photography shows the excellence of Ms. Garrett's work...A must for the cookie aficionado."--American Cake Decoration

The simple recipes range from gingerbread to shortbread, from sugar cookies to chocolate. But what really makes these extra special are Garrett's clever techniques for turning the cookies into works of art that delight the eye as much as they please the palate. There are ruffled bibs in soft pastel hues for a baby shower, a white chocolate rose with eight petals, and a 3D bride and groom for wedding and anniversary celebrations. Anyone can create these effects with confidence thanks to the author's clarity and creativity.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful cookies!.......2007-08-04
I've made several recipes from this book, and so far, everything has been delicious. The cookies look great, too. This book has inspired several ideas, and I've learned a few new decorating techniques. I wouldn't recommend this book to someone looking for some quick decorating ideas to do with the kids, because most of these cookies are pretty time consuming, and I imagine would be difficult for kids.
Creative Cookies.......2007-07-13
Gorgeous cookies. Not sure if they are the type I would make for day-by-day but surely great ideas for that special occasion. Toba explains very well the techniques used in the book. His ideas can also be used in the decoration of cakes and petitfours. For a cookie fanatic it is an inspiration.
Creative Cookies.......2007-05-12
Not quite what I was expecting, but all and all a good book.
Creative Cookies.......2007-04-05
Amazing book! Beautifully photographed, unique cookie designs inspires one to delve into the art of cookie creation. Excellent professional tips on how to be successful regardless of your skill level.
Not Your Grandmother's Cookie Book.......2007-01-19
This book is not for a beginner. Could have been written clearer with more explicit step by step directions. I wanted something a little more everyday with simple but quaint cookies that could be easily made by the busy novice with a job and children. The high end cookies in this book are more suited for decoration than they are for noshing on.
Book Description
With designers constantly working for clients and having a limited amount of freedom in much of their work, the chance to strike out on their own and do something truly original and personal is a real luxury. The cards included represent some of the most creative design available so are a wonderful source of inspiration for all types of projects. All designers and design firms, whether in-house or freelance, create their own greeting cards which serve not only as a greeting card, but as an opportunity to show off their work in a totally unique and uninhibited light. In addition, they are the perfect project because they are small enough so they are not incredibly time consuming nor are they very expensive to produce -- even with unique materials or treatments.
Customer Reviews:
A full color collection of thumbnail images - Umm... Yay?.......2007-08-04
I have a lot of problems with this book.
The first being that while the designs are split into categories such as "brand identity", "invitations" and "self branding" (among others) the individual pieces have virtually no information given on their purpose or use. It would be very helpful to know standard information like the target audience or main goals attributed to the selected works shown. It isn't enough to simply lump sum all this work into a category and offer no explanation on demographics or psychographics. A directory at the end of the book lists who designed the work, but that's really all you get.
The second thing that irked me is that the pictures are very small. Each page may have half a dozen or more pieces shown but no detail shots of any. This further adds to my first complaint. The viewer can't even deduce for themselves what most of the work was intended for since the images are so small. Some of the photography is very lovely and truly works to show off the best qualities of the selected pieces but without detailed shots or full page displays the viewer is left unsatisfied.
While all the designs shown are very good, many are based off of common ideas. Lots of Pseudo-Asian, lots of decomposed and grunge. While they're attractive, they're not particularly inspiring.
Over all I think this book would do more good in the hands of a craft minded individual and not a designer. I can see many of the invitations lending themselves well to home projects and offering some inspiration for personal correspondence stationery.
An acceptable coffee table book, but not a design tool.
Great Resource.......2007-03-09
Love this book. It's jam-packed with inspirational greetings that can be applied to all types of graphic design projects. I plan on buying their other 1000 series in the near future.
My favorite book ever.......2007-02-22
I bought this book and used it everyday until I lost it. I felt completely off base without it for several months until I couldn't take it anymore and purchased it AGAIN! I absolutely love 1000 greetings and recommend it to everyone.
Who is this for?.......2007-01-31
Not enough details for inspiration. They say a picture is worth 1,000 words, not in this case. Maybe if they would have given us a quick paragraph about the piece, (how, who, what, . . .etc). I'm sure the designers would've loved this. Were they even asked?
A lot of fluff, not a lot of detail.......2007-01-19
While this book is filled with 1000 different images, you don't get any details. What does the card look like when opened? What type of client was this project done for? Also, the images are incredibly small so you can't read any of the copy, which for some of the designs, is critical to their success. I wouldn't have bought this book had I been browsing in a store and been able to see it first.

Customer Reviews:
wow.......2005-05-13
I thought my cat loved the seafood salad with feta and olives until I fed her the salmon ravioli with squash, oregano, and catnip. Even though she's always in my heart, I think she gets sad that I'm off working all day, and these recipes really do it for her. See also the delicious mango cat lassi and the tuna quiche with cilantro and artichokes. Three billion thumbs up.
Totally charming!.......2003-11-30
In addition to the recipies, which are great fun, practically every page of this book is a feast for the soul with adorable, whimsical illustrations and quotes about famous cat lovers. My favorite is about Winston Churchill and his cat - I would love to quote it here but can't let the cat out of the bag!
I read this book aloud, in front of a cozy fire with my kitty Annie curled up on my chest - she purred through the entire book - it was a wonderful experience of the serenity of hearth and home enriched by a cat.
This book is about much more than recipies - it's about attitude and fun, and gave me permission to totally spoil my cats. I think any cat lover would find it irresistible.
LOVED IT.......2003-11-13
I actually bought this book as a gag .. to give to a friend whom is a fanatical cat lover. Boy was I wrong, the recepies are good, but so are others in this genre. What really caught me was the illustrations and the small stories in betwen, a tru feast for the eye .. and mind. It is worth every penny for any true cat lover out there.
An absolute must for every cat lover out there!.......2003-10-09
I've been looking for this book since it was first in The Mail-Order Cat and am so happy to have found it! the recipes DO brighten my cat's life and MINE TOO!!!
I have friends who will be happy this book is found too! One of them has a gift store in Colorado and used to order this book all the time!"

The Simple Art of Napkin Folding.......2007-01-26
Helpful book has many ideas for those who still like to set a nice table and actually use cloth napkins.
Great book.......2007-01-13
I like this book. It has a lot of cute folds, it is easy to follow and the book is laid out well. It even has a section on some folds for children. The only thing that could possibly make this book better would be if it was in color.
easy to follow.......2006-11-03
I bought this book after considering several others on line, and now I won't need to buy another. I wanted something that was easy to understand and follow to make the dinner table a little something special for my wife after she comes home from work. Having dinner ready was just not enough for me, and thought about the napkin presentation. This book has more than you will ever need, and each one is clearly drawn out and easy to understand. Money well worth spent.
Love it!.......2005-09-27
This book has easy to follow instructions and is very informative about the history of the napkin folds. My husband smiles when he sits down to eat. It's fun decorating the table now.
Somewhat palatable.......2003-06-20
Being a napkin enthusiast, naturally I'm quite an avid fan of Linda Hetzer, however, I find it immensely unnerving that she inexcusably has omitted several key napkin folding solutions. Apparently, she just wouldn't make the effort to list 100 Fancy Folds, just only 94 - how revolting.

Great for beginners and fun to do with kids.......2007-04-04
This book is GREAT, AWESOME, FABULOUS, FANTASTIC!!! I just can't say enough!!
I am a stay at home mom always looking for some new activities to do. I have never baked anything but choclate chip cookies and cupcakes from a box, and I wanted to try something new even though I am a bit challenged in the kitchen. :-)
This book outlines everything you need to get started and even tells you where you can find your "equipment". At no time did I feel overwhelmed in getting started.
My 4 year old son and I, plus my neighbor and her kids (6yrs & 14yrs) had the best time decorating our Easter cookies. The kids especially enjoyed eating the last of the icing from the icing bags!! This is a great activity to pass a rainy day or cold afternoon stuck inside. My cookies didn't look like the author's, but I could see I was getting better at decorating with each cookie I did. I can't wait to bake some more!!
Looking for a cookie book? You MUST get this one..........2007-02-28
I have never experienced a cookbook such as this. Incredible, informative, and ingenious.
BEST instructional cookie book EVER.......2007-02-12
This is the best instructional baking/decorating book that I have ever read. It is interesting and helpful, and the pictures are beautiful! I would recommend this book for anyone from beginner to pro.
Cookie Sensations lives up to its name........2007-02-08
This is a great book about decorated cookies. It is easily read and understood and the technique can be completed by a beginner to intermediate cake/cookie decorator. The book includes a nice history of cookies and cutters and includes alot of illustrations through out. She lists a nice selection of suppliers and several delicious receipes for cookies and icings. There is a full page listing of color combinations, helping even a beginner decorator make lots of lovely shades of icings. She also includes a graduated color guide to help newbies and has a color chart page that gives you an idea of which colors look best together including a break down of when using a certain color for the outlines, what colors work best for the fill-in. The book also includes many cookie styles for birthdays to wedding, holidays to baby showers along with detailed instructions, photos and templates in case you don't have the cutter used or don't want to purchase one. The fill in method is not the color flow method as you can still see the lines where the icing was piped in, but if you chose to using the color flow method it would work well with these designs. I usually use the flow method myself but after seeing this more textured look, I have been incorporating it into my decorating and am finding the customers really like the look of them. It adds alot of visual interest to the cookie instead of it being just flat. I have also mixed the flow method and the textured method of this book together and it really works well together (ie.. flow method face and textured method clothing). All in all a great book for lot of fun ideas and a great deal for the price. I recommend this to any cake/cookie decorating library.
Cookies . . . not just for breakfast anymore!.......2007-01-22
I've ordered cookies from the author and they were absolutely amazing! I've already started to purchase the necessary supplies as explained in the book. I can't wait to get into the kitchen! A great book even for someone who can't bake!!

Be Inspired.......2007-09-03
This book is small, but mighty! It is amazingly simplistic yet provides a wealth of inspiration for creative inspiration. The photography is breathtakking.
I think that with practice you can master the cookies, marzipan, gumpaste and fondant decorations in this book. Piping royal icing flowers is a bit more daunting. I would suggest a class or video for royal and butter cream icing flowers Wilton How to Make Icing Flowers DVD because they can be a bit tricky (at least for me.)
This book provides six basic recipes for cookies, cakes and frostings. My hope is that you are purchasing the book for decorating ideas and instruction, not for the recipes. The author's decorating syle is clean, but very elegant. The book provides a strong decorating foundation -- you can use this as a springboard for your imagination.
This is the perfect book if you want to make your first decorated cookies or petit fours. If you are making your first tiered cake this book will provide inspiration, but you may need to supplement it with other sources for complete instruction.
Artistic.......2007-06-08
This is another of those step-by-step cake guides that was very well worth the money. This particular book kept selling out at Michaels so I had to go online and purchase. Definitely not disappointed
Great resource!.......2007-05-20
I just got into cake making and sugar craft and this book is the first I ordered. It is great and I've had a lot of success following Porschens' advice. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that not all temperatures and cake pan times needed are included. For example, I made a cake from two square 8x8 pans and the only baking directions I could find were for either cupcakes or a sheetcake. Instead of baking at 400 degrees as suggested I lowered the temp to 350 and just kept checking until done. Still came out great, thank goodness. The basic cake recipe tastes wonderful with the soaking syrup (I'd never tried that before)but the sugar cookie recipe was a little bland. Beautiful cookies though! I REALLY like this book and will be happy to take credit for Porschens beautiful dessert designs for years to come!
Really pretty party cakes.......2007-05-08
One of the best. I own a lot of cake decorating books and this is one of my bibles. As somebody said, it's looks as good inside as looks outside. Porshen work is so fresh, clean and neat that you can not stop checking it over and over. I do not like make recommendations, but either if you are a beginner or a professional, you will love this book
recycled ideas.......2007-03-31
I flipped through this book at our local library. I started out being pretty impressed because the book is nicely done, but then I started seeing a lot of recycled ideas from various American cake and cookie artists. That was rather disappointing.
