Shame orders can't come complete.......2007-05-17
The set of books will be beautiful, if I ever get the complete set. The set I was shipped was incomplete. Packed Incomplete from the publisher I assume. It is a seven book set and I was sent six. I was told another set was being sent to me, and I hope I live to see them. It has been over a month since this all started.
There is no excuse that I can think of for a set to be plastic wrapped from a source, and for the set to be incomplete.
I'm sure that this will not be posted.
THE book to teach reading.......2007-04-16
I just bought these books for my four year old neighbor's granddaughter.
I used them with my son and he was reading and writing (albiet phonetically) by the time he was 3 1/2. Unless a child is dyslexic or has an auditory learning disability, McGuffey is The Way. This is how children learned to read before everyone got 'so smart'. The school systems would be be smarter if they went back to this.
Beautiful words.......2007-02-14
I love the stories and poems. They warm the hearts of my children as well as my own. They are tender, thoughtful, wholesome, without any glut or glitter. But they do sparkle with beauty and they fill the mind with goodness.
Other reviewers have brought to light that there is an anti-semetic theme in some of the stories for older children. So far, I have not found even a hint of this type of sentiment. Even if there was, and if it was a minor allusion to such sentiment, rather than an overiding theme, I would teach my children that it's wrong.
Back to basics.......2007-01-17
I bought these for a friend who teaches an intro to teaching course. He uses them to emphasize a back to basics approach to reading and values. The binding is sturdy but a bit cheaper and flashier than I anticipated.
Absolutely wonderful.......2007-01-03
You can't go wrong with these books! I thought after receiveing them that my son might not like them because they don't have that "new" look of more modern books. No bright pages or colorful illustrations. But I was very wrong. My kids love these books and they help with struggling readers in a way you can't even imagine. The pages are sequenced in such a manner that they make sense to little ones beginning to read. I love them and will teach all four of my children to read using these books!

Lovely series for the Christian Homeschool.......2000-04-05
I have been using this series as I teach my six chidren at home. The authors have done an excellent job of bringing us the best of the original McGuffy Readers, returning to the contents of the first series, not those later published under his name. My children are discovering a nobler time and way of life as they learn the basics with these fine readers. The study guide is simple to use with many practical exercises and examples. The only reason for less than five stars seems to be the quality of the paper and binding. In the noble effort to keep costs down, the durability of the product suffers. I am hoping for a hard bound edition. Should one appear, the publishers should be prepared for greater sales than the previous edition. Such excellent content deserves an equally excellent binding with the ability withstand being read again and again.
Outstanding, Demanding Lessons for Young People and Adults........1998-07-28
These are the original 1837 McGuffey Readers before the secular revisions, with slight revisions of archaic grammar. Four Readers and a Study Guide show you how to teach your children to reason cogently, speak persuasively, write clearly--all in a Christian framework. Each lesson has moral and intellectual content, and offers an impressive vocabulary. Words progress from 'learn,' 'keep,' in the early grades to 'assiduity, profligate, efficacious, calcaneous, penury, communition, execrated' in high school. Lessons are followed by spell/define exercises, and thoughtful questions. Ex.: "Is it not better to be industrious and possess a good name than to possess many riches?" "What is the effect of making public opinion the rule of life?" "Have we not reason to rejoice that we live where we may hear the glad tidings of salvation?" Each lesson begins with a basic rule of reading and elocution. Study Guide ties each original lesson to a biblica! l theme. There are 10 years of 36 weekly lessons (grades 1-10). Instructions on teaching reading aloud, public speaking, good writing habits, memorization, logic, love for language as one of God's gifts. Many famous authors like Blackthorn, Shakespeare, Bacon, Irving figure prominently. By the time a child begins the third reader he will have surpassed most of today's high schoolers. Mastery of the fourth reader puts him beyond most college students. Any adult can read the selections with profit. You'll be awed at what was once accomplished in American schools, and resolved that your children grow up with the same advantages. The lessons cover a broad range of worthy topics including history, geography, poetry, and virtue. These are just reading selections, however, and do not as such offer instruction in phonics or grammar. Some of the 19th-century perspecitves are quaint, even funny. These lessons are intended for Christian parents who homeschool their children. ! I'm happy to learn from them myself. I see the sublime ed! ucational value of these lessons, and see the great need for moral and spiritual training for young people. These lessons will provide those in spades.

A must have!.......2006-11-13
I have purchased this book and the others in the series because of the timeless teaching tool that it is. I wish schools would go back to this book. I myself learned from these books because I was in a private school and I remembered this fact in the attempts to find a good teaching tool for my own son.
The next best thing is Abeka books if you can get your hands on them. My grandmother taught 3 year olds for years and she would start children every year with the tools in this book. I am so glad I found them in stock at Amazon. Every parent should buy them for their children. There is no better textbook available and the method is tried and true.
The way to teach reading - if it isn't broken, don't fix it.......2002-09-09
I work in a public high school where many of the middle school students enter freshman year incapable of reading a simple sentence!! This is the legacy of whole language, untested reading theories, radical education ideas, and an environment that is more concerned (out of necessity because no one is disciplining) with behavior problems than with actually educating students. After trying out a number of materials provided by the school district which didn't do the job, I have been secretly using these readers with good success. What they don't know won't hurt them (the district) and will help the students (who are finally learning to read at age 15 and 16!).
Think about it: when these readers were used, we had one of the highest literacy rates in the world. Now (with all of the crazy reading approaches out there) we have one of the lowest in the Western world.
Some complain that these readers are not "multi-cultural" enough. Excuse me? Since when are the fables of Aesop, nursery rhymes, and classic poetry considered bad for our children? I have found that my students thoroughly enjoy these and I have yet to hear my students complain that they are boring or "mono-cultural". It is always the nuts in the school system who ruin everything.
A Must Have - Do they still make them??.......2001-07-13
My dad taught me to read using this book well before I ever started school. By the time I did get to Kindergarten I was already reading and writing and was always several skill levels ahead of my classmates. My reading comprehension was also very advanced. Now that I am expecting my own child I hope that by using this book he/she will have the same early appreciation for school and learning and reading that I did!
Success Through McGuffy.......2000-10-14
I was first introduced to these astounding books by accident. While browsing through the campus bookstore I noticed this wonderful book and purchased it for my newborn son's later use. When he turned three I started reading to him from this book and in a very short time he was beginning to pick up the pronounciation, and could follow the story lines. This was sixteen years ago. My son is now in college, doing quite well, and using a partial scholarsip he recieved for achademic excellence. Throughout his school career he was lauded for his outstanding reading ability. His ability can be traced directly back to McGuffy. I strongly recommend this book and the others in this set to any parent who wants to take part in opening the world of reading to their children.
Phonics before they were hip.......2000-10-05
My dad taught me to read with this book when I was six. He took this step when he found out that the public schools were not getting the job done. As a result of McGuffey's Reader and that early intervention, I was reading 3-4 grades ahead of my school mates all through school. A really splendid resource for anyone concerned with their child's education.

Book Description
Since 1836, children have been delighted by the McGuffey Readers' exotic adventures, exciting stories, beautiful poems, and funny fables. This companion volume was revised in 1879 to conform in orthography, pronunciation, and spelling to the latest edition of Webster's Unabridged Dictionary. The Eclectic Spelling-Book was designed to teach students the English language not by appealing merely to memory, but by associating each lesson with some principle of sound, meaning, or accent.

McGuffey's Eclectic Spelling Book.......2007-03-19
The McGuffey's Eclectic Spelling Book is an excellent, educational tool that one can use to strengthen spelling/language skills, both independently or with the assistance of a teacher/tutor. This is a great book!

Homeschool Review.......2000-08-14
Last year we used the Spalding method of spelling, and I think it is a geat way to learn spelling. The biggest hurdle to implementing that program for my son was the randomness of the words with no connection to what he is reading or learning in his daily life. This was a difficult hurdle for an intuitive learner like him to overcome. The McGuffy Speller lists words with common sounds. Thus you will have words like fair, and fare together on one list, teaching the child the different ways one sound can be spelled. I think this is easier for a child to deal with than having to decide as in Spalding which spelling goes with the same sound. In McGuffy the sounds are introduced with the words and this is less frustrating than a child having to feel he should somehow know which spelling to use: are, or air. If you tried Spalding, and liked the phonetic approach, but don't think you will continue in it, and are looking for a similar but more conventional approach, this may be a good choice for you. I think it takes the best of phonics, memorization, and word patterns, and combines them into a great word list that can be used for weekly spelling tests. Personally, I am not using even this method this year as I believe the memorization and detachment from hands on learning just won't stick with my son. If your child doesn't balk at weekly spelling tests, learning the words in this book will prepare him for college level reading and writing.

I am a product of these books..........2005-06-21
My father started me out on these books at the age of 4 years old. I managed to be one of the top students all throughout elementary and junior high...(I rebelled a bit in high school) Either way I was always 2-3 years ahead in my reading and writing abilities. I highly suggest these books to ANY parent who wishes to enrich the education of their children.
Why spend so much money for Hooked on Phonics?.......2004-02-26
Last fall, we borrowed the Hooked on Phonics from a neighbor, and saw limited results with my 5 yr old son. BUT, I thought, some progress is better than none, so I begged my mother to buy Hooked on Phonics for Christmas. She didn't. I thought she was just being cheap by giving him a McGuffey Primer, but I have seen my son FLY through the lessons. He is reading with comprehension and retaining the words better than I ever could have imagined. Hooked on Phonics was just too colorful, included too much media (little books, big books, stickers, CDRoms, videotapes, etc.) and was, I don't know, just so HECTIC feeling. With these readers, we sit together on the couch, my son is able to go at his own pace, and have a real sense of accomplishment in just a 5-10 minute lesson. And he has an interest in reading *outside* of the lessons, also, which he didn't have before. I ENCOURAGE YOU to purchase this reader, as well as the entire set, since when you have one, you'll want them all.
BTW- *My son* asked Grandma for the next McGuffey reader for his birthday. Pretty cool, huh?
A great early reader!.......2003-02-07
I bought this book for my 6 year old who is having some trouble learning to read. I love the book for its simplicity. The first couple of pages show the alphabet letters with the uppercase letters on one page and the lowercase letters on the other. My son has really enjoyed using those two pages to learn letter recognition. Then come the reading pages, and each page gets progressively more difficult as you go along. The black and white illustrations are simple and enjoyable but not distracting. Each page has a short lesson with letters and short words shown at the top of the page and sentences using the letters and words down below. My son has enjoyed trying to find the letters/short words from above in the sentences below. The earlier lessons use simple words such as cat and rat, but the lessons do get more complex as you continue along. I have enjoyed teaching my son some new vocabulary words with this book also as some of the older words are used such as lad instead of boy and nag instead of horse. The book is small and easy for a child to hold. This book is well worth the small investment, and I look forward to moving on to the other McGuffy's Readers as my son progresses.
Learning to Read the Old-Fashioned Way.......2001-05-09
Originally Attracted to the McGuffey readers for the novelty of it, I bought the Primer shortly after my first child was born. I read it myself, thought the pedagogy sound--particularly the writers' decision to avoid allowing children to use pictures to "guess" the words--and I came to appreciate the simplicity and clarity of the short lessons. While I use many other beginning reader books to help teach my five-year-old daughter to read, we have been working through the McGuffey Primer and loving it, primarily because the lessons are short enough to keep my daughter's attention and to allow her to feel at the end of each lesson that she has accomplished something.
I particularly appreciate the "Reviews" that come after each set of four or five lessons. No pictures means that the child must entirely depend on her/his memory of the words from previous lessons and on phonetics in order to make her/his way through the review.
One slight drawback would be that for some of the lessons, the story line is not clear enough to catch the child's attention. On some occassions, my daughter reads all the words, but she fails to comprehend the lesson's meaning. This is rare, but more modern readers do a better job of making their stories engaging enough that the child forgets how "hard" it is to read, and instead races through the book to find out what happens.
Nonetheless, I think that parents who are serious about teaching their children to read and who understand the value of supplementing their child's school curriculum, will appreciate the Primer and subsequent titles in the McGuffey series. At the same time, they will expose themselves and their children to a bit of Americana!

150 years of parents can't be wrong!.......2007-05-07
At the end of my daughter's kindergarten class (she was 5) I was told by her school that she would probably start reading in first grade. Half way through first grade, I was told she was a little slow and not picking up things as fast as she could. At this point, I stepped in and taught my daughter to read using "Noah Websters' Blue Backed Speller" and "McGuffey's Readers."
"McGuffey's Readers" are a delight. I read the books cover to cover and loved every single story contained therein. These two literary tools [the Readers and the BB Speller] were how America learned to read for 150 years. And after *wasting* 18 months listening to reading "specialists" in public schools, *I* taught my daughter to read in under 6 weeks.
She is now a sophomore in college (honor student!) and remains a prolific reader.
I *highly* recommend McGuffey's Readers for any parent who wants to teach their child to read. It is a book you will keep forever, and it is something to be handed down to your children and their children and on and on.
Speaking as an architectural historian, these wonderful books also provide a fascinating keyhole peak into an earlier time!
Not just reading lessons!.......1999-06-14
The McGuffey's Revised Second and Third Eclectic Readers combine a number of lessons into one. They can be used for reading comprehension or as copybooks for improving handwriting skills. The numerous poems can be used to improve memory skills. Furthermore, many of the lessons are focused on nature subjects such as birds, insects, farm animals, etc., and will supplement a natural history text for teaching early scientific observation. Most importantly, all the lessons are moral and help to preserve childhood innocence, something that is sorely needed in today's world. Filled with beautiful illustrations, these hardcover textbooks are an outstanding value.

i purchased my first mcguffey reader at knotts berry farm in so. cal. After reading several of the stories i was very pleased with the characters who often show valuable lessons to young readers {good character building lessons}. The vocabulary with definitions at the end of each story are essential and a plus. There are also lots of wonderful poems...these readers are well worth the investment. barbara vassar.

A Must-Have for Kids in Today's Society.......2006-06-26
I can't believe that this book was used in this country's public schools once upon a time! (It actually mentions God, although it doesn't ascribe to any one particular religion). It's values and lessons like these that once helped this nation become great. What else do you expect when its citizens are taught as young students to obey/respect adults, help the weak, speak gently, be honest, not backbite, not show-off, etc.? I feel that today's books are afraid to teach morals to our children, and the vocabulary and sentence structure in today's readers are too simplistic. I am thrilled with this find and am recommending it to everyone. I love the discussions that each passage sparks in my household and it's safe to say that my 8 yr old and 6 yr old sons are enjoying it as much as I am.

Product Description
Mott Media has Republished the 1830's Version of the McGuffey Readers with the Original Christian Content! How would McGuffey teach reading if he were here today? His first concern would be that the content should promote moral growth and excellence of mind in habits, attitudes, and literary tastes. And Bible selections would be at the top of his reading list. McGuffey also believed in phonics for beginning reading. Methods and timing should be adapted to the individuality of each child. Parents should not send their dearest treasure off to school too early in life, but should proceed at the child's own pace. This preserves the vigor of his mental action. McGuffey believed in memorizing as a way to develop habits of attention that promote understanding and mastery of ALL learning, even those studies which are not memorized. McGuffey believed that an obvious result of a cultivated mind is a wide vocabulary. And the best way to cultivate a wide vocabulary is to learn words in their context, as in studying the important ideas and noble thoughts presented in the Readers. These principles produce the education that shaped American character, particularly in the West, for over one hundred years. It's the kind of education the majority of Americans want and need today.

WONDERFUL Parent-Teacher Manual for the ORIGINAL McGuffey Eclectic Readers.......2006-06-06
This is a wonderful parent-teacher manual that correlates beautifully with the Original McGuffey Eclectic Readers Series (the one re-published by MOTT MEDIA in 1982). A MUST-HAVE for homeschoolers! I love readers - so even though we use My Father's World homeschool curriculum, I supplement with these and other readers (although I must admit that these McGuffey readers and this teacher manual is all one REALLY would need). HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Possibly a great resource..........2006-02-25
...but not for me. I own the Eclectic McGuffey Readers, and thought this would work for me. I liked the suggestions that were offered, but I couldn't relate them to our books, because they didn't correlate correctly. I believe the suggestions would only work with the Original Readers, because they in no way matched up with the lessons I have in the Eclectic Readers. If you have the Original Readers, you may be very happy with these--just be certain you do have the correct books!
