Not bad, but "incomplete".......2007-08-24
I received the product in a reasonably timely manner and gave it to my wife to prepare for her TOEIC test. All was going well, until she got to the practice tests. I don't recall seeing anywhere that you had to buy the audio CDs separately. It comes with one, but that only covers the pre-practice test, or whatever its called. On top of that, I have been unable to find any retailer that sells the Complete Audio kit from within the US. My wife said its a good book, but should really include the audio for ALL of the practice tests. Yeah, I could read the audioscript to her, but we thought the whole point of having an audio CD included was so that she could listen to that, and not me.
Overall, not a bad book, but again, should include all of the audio on the CD(s).
No comple audio CD.......2007-08-01
This book includes an audio CD of Listening Comprehension Review
which is a part of the Listening practice.
But NO CD is included for other part of Listening practice
and the two complete practice tests in the book.
I was a little disappointed since I expected I can go through
the complete practice tests twice before I take an actual TOEIC test.
It seemd we have to buy other CD, Complete Adio Progran (0-13-199308-9),
which I couldn't find at amazon.com.
This is not bad book but,
you should understnd before you decide to buy this book.

Was expecting a little more........2007-09-25
Although it's a great intro with lively discussions and a great deal of vocabulary is introduced and incorporated, it's not all toghether "the" best primer available, especially since it lacks heavily in regards to verbs, conjugations, and other aspects. It's GREAT for complete beginners, but a speaker with some working knowledge may find it a tad bit unchallenging.
if you're a complete newbie, i recommed getting this fair-quality book, but just know its not great.......2006-06-17
ok, this is a good book. by studying from this, you'll develop a knowledge of basic hindi grammar backed by a couple hundred words. it is broken into 2 parts. the first 10 lessons is about speaking and the second last six is about writing. i'm now on lesson 9 of the first part and spending a little reviewing the previous lessons.
i have 1 major complaint about this book. WAY TOO MUCH VOCAB IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE FIRST TEN LESSONS. by this, i mean that if u want 2 learn how to count, say colors, illnesses, and common everyday foods, u must look at the glossary.most aren't included in the dialogues. hindi #'s are very, very irregular compared 2 english and trying to look it up in the glossary and memorize like that makes things harder. (i can only count up 2 twenty so far and i'm on the 9th lesson!). the same goes for the other things i mentioned.
and 2 add a little more, the author likes to explain things clearly. but explain things clearly by using linguistic or language jargon. i had to find out on my own wat transitive and intransitive verbs were on own 4 example.
but other than these, everything seems fine to me. but i havent tried the writing lessons. and do get the cd's. but if u can't u'll survive with the cassettes(although that'll be a little harder with those)
BUT BEWARE! SUM INDIAN PEOPLE ARE RUDE AND UNFRIENDLY!(NOT EVERYONE IS LIKE THAT THANK GOODNESS). i know this personally. they might think u to be a criminally insane freak 4 ur interest in the language.
but pakistanese on the other hand are people u won't have to worry about. the ones i've met are very impressed by my limited knowledge of hindi.
good luck!
Suitable For Whetting Your Curiosity And More.......2006-05-23
I purchased both the book and the audio CD, and so far I've read maybe 8 or so pages, but have played the CDs quite a bit as a companion to my daily commute. Bhatia is my first exposure to Hindi langauge instruction. So far the experience has been enjoyable, though a lot of Hindi letters sound alike to my tin ear.
Compared to products I've used for other langauges (mostly Berlitz tapes), the Hindi CD is a vast improvement, moving beyond "set piece conversation" into more general usage.
Obviously, I'm not in a position to critique Bhatia's style of instruction or other technical details.
The CDs I received are "burned" (CD-Rs) with one-color silk screening, and not pressed. That's OK, but for extra safety, ripping a copy for general use is recommended. Keeping CD-Rs in hot cars is an express ticket to data oblivion.
My only minor gripe is that I wish that those who write about Hindi or Indian culture would stop apologizing for India's social problems. Remember, the USA broke away from Great Britain in 1776 with a population of about 3 million. India started her own path in 1947 with a population hundreds of times greater. It took the USA roughly 70-80 years to achieve social and economic milestones comparable to Europe. So just chill and remember that respect comes to those with lots of money and power (such as one gains by splitting the atom.)
User-friendly intro to an extremely important world language.......2005-06-20
Bohut acche! Tej K. Bhatia's book is an outstanding, gentle, yet comprehensive introduction to the Hindi language for a beginner. It's difficult to cite the numerous reasons why this book is so valuable for the apprehensive beginning language-learner, but I'll make an attempt to summarize the high points:
(1) Bhatia is careful not to overwhelm the beginning learner with the complexities of the Devanagari script too early. He has the perfect instructor's touch here, rendering most of the early dialogues in Roman characters while gradually easing the learner into Devanagari as he/she gains more confidence in the basics of speaking and comprehending.
(2) Bhatia's book has just enough grammar to give any Hindi learner a handy mental framework for organizing the rules of sentence construction, without being too intimidating. Happily, Hindi grammar resembles that of Mandarin Chinese in some respects, though not quite as simple as Mandarin-- it's fairly consistent, broad-brushed enough to allow sophisticated emotional and logical expression yet accessible enough that even beginning students can basically vocalize their thoughts after just a couple weeks of study. Bhatia does a fine job of really organizing this grammar in the right sequence, explaining the niceties of Hindi syntax while taking some of the language's trickier aspects (e.g. postpositions, as in Japanese, participles, causatives, the oblique) and making them seem eminently manageable.
(3) Pronunciation, often neglected in self-teaching language books, gets more than a cursory treatment here, an asset not to be downplayed!
(4) The tape/CDs have a wealth of spoken material and can be conveniently played at home, on the road or on the plane or train or bus.
(5) Bhatia's book, as the series title suggests, really focuses on Hindi as a colloquial idiom. While this may at first seem trivial, it's a very important asset to his book! In India, there are in effect two forms of Hindi-- the formalized literary version used in ceremonial and official circumstances, and the popular "Bollywood" Hindi that's used on the street and in the markets throughout India and, indeed, much of the world (including in quite a few South Asian shops in New York City, where this "common Hindi" is a sort of lingua franca). It's this colloquial Hindi (very closely resembling Urdu), essentially, that's so rapidly become a world language and taken much of the world by storm as Bollywood movies and music, among other Indian exports, become so popular.
In practice, this "colloquial Hindi" isn't even entirely Hindi, but a hybrid spoken tongue with a Hindi foundation plus plenty of contributions from Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and other Indian as well as European languages tossed in to spice the mix, popular throughout the Subcontinent in its varieties. While Bhatia doesn't delve too much into the varied vocabulary of this "dialectical Hindi(ish)" language, his dialogues and idiomatic expressions do a fine job of conveying true conversational Hindi to the learner and thus providing a nice basis for communicating in the popular Hindi that's actually used between native speakers.
In its dialectical varieties, Hindi-Urdu has close to a billion speakers worldwide, may soon become a UN official language and-- along with Spanish and Mandarin Chinese-- may well be one of the "essential languages" of the 21st century as India continues its ascent. Moreover, since Hindi is a fellow Indo-European language, it has enough similarities to intrigue and delight a native European-language speaker and smooth the learning process. In fact, if you've already learned an important European language like French, German or Spanish-- or Farsi Persian or Dari, which Hindi-Urdu in many ways resembles-- you'll have a headstart in mastering the quirks and structures of Hindi, especially as Bhatia presents it.
Besides which, Hindi is a beautiful and poetic language that sings as much as it speaks, equally at home conveying complicated scientific concepts as in expressing the deepest emotions of the heart. Bhatia is an experienced and talented teacher of this wonderful language, and after just a couple months of studying you'll find yourself able to communicate at a decent level, maybe even humming some Hindi music during your lunch break.
Barhaiya! Really excellent.......2005-01-22
This is a fantastic resource. I have just received my copy and already I am in love with it. It is very well-written, and strikes a nice balance between the structure of the langauge and usability. I especially like that the author is no fan of prescriptivists, and so presents "Hindi as she is spoke". I would not say that it is "better" than Snell's TYH, but it takes a slightly different approach, and is, in my opinion a great complement to the other work.
My only gripes are the way that all the devanagari is stuck at the back (grr!) and that I had to buy the book and CD separately. Even with those minuses, it is absolutely worth it, and I would rate it a must have.
Book Description
Asante Twi is the most widely spoken of the dialects of the Akan language, and Akan is spoken by about forty four percent of Ghana's population as a first language. It is also used as a second language by many others. The author, Professor of Linguistics at the University of Ghana, has written the bookto introduce a non-Twi beginner to the spoken language, which forms themain focus. Dialogues are as natural and as close to current every day usage as possible. "...another book that should be very helpful to students and examiners in the Twi (Asante) language." (West Africa)

Don't bother buying this book.......2007-09-20
Don't waste your time buying this book. They promise a cd or audio tape with the book, but didn't send it. So we returned it, and they sent it a second time, also without the cd. It is virtually impossible to learn this tonal language without a cd or tape.
I can't believe this.......2007-01-12
I was not happy because I never received the cd that came with the book. Someone I knew bought the same thing and they let me listen to the cd that I never received and It was not clear they did not explain anythnig just started reading and paused a lot in the cd. The moral of this story is I was very unhappy
A comprehensive course in Twi Asante for the non-Twi learner.......2006-09-18
I am trying to learn basic Twi, as I will be working in Ghana later this year. By ordering the book, I had hoped to acquire basic language skills to increase my communication skills while in Ghana.
To this end, I found the 146 page book to be worthless. How can a "comprehensive" course be so short?
It is accompanied by a disk that is difficult to hear, as it seems to be recorded from a simple tape recorder. The content is not repeated so that I had to "reverse" the disk constantly, and still was unable to comprehend what was being said.
In conclusion, this book is a thorough disappointment. While I tend to have an affinity for foreign language, I did not even come close to mastering basic greetings.
I would advise anyone looking to learn Twi to find an alternative resource.
good intro to Twi language.......2002-08-04
I have used this text for two classes. Overall, it has been very helpful. The notes on culture are also very helpful. Initially, the audio CD and Cassette which accompany the book were of low quality; however, I received a better audio (I believe the stock was replenished with better audio) from the CD and the cassette.
The audio supplement could be improved by additing specific pronunciation examples.
I recommend it for indivivdual and group classes in Twi.

Start with something else, then buy this........2001-06-26
In its two parts and appendices, Comprehensive Course packs in the information. Part 1 (17 chapters in 80 pages) concentrates on the spoken language, with an appropriate amount of grammatical instruction interwoven with oral and written exercises. Part 2 (19 chapters in 40 pages) focuses in greater detail on technical grammar points. Finally, in the appendices, a variety of common idiomatic expressions, proverbs and Akan names are explained. There is also a 15 page list of vocabulary (in English-Twi, but not in Twi-English) at the back of the book.
The chapters in Part 1 cover a broad spread of subjects: greetings; finding out where someone lives and what they do; travelling and directions; telling the time; clothes; the body; and buying things, to name a few. The structure of these chapters is not uniform, but typically each contains: a dialogue section (with the Twi and the English translation side-by-side); a list of relevant vocabulary; notes on basic grammar; an excellent explanation of relevant cultural points; and a short written exercise, say, a translation or word substitution exercise (for which no answers are given).
By separating out the detailed grammar study into Part 2, Professor Dolphyne allows you to concentrate on the spoken language first, where you only encounter essential grammar as the need arises, and to leave the more technical stuff for later (or ignore it altogether). I do not find it disruptive that most of the grammar appears separately, and this may be a pleasant approach if you are not really interested in the rules of grammar, but the risk, I suppose, is that you will then use the Part 1 chapters more like a phrasebook where you are just learning to memorise selected phrases, rather than learning to use the language.
The main problem I find with Comprehensive Course is that one of its strengths - the sheer volume of instruction that it contains - is also its principal weakness. I find that in working through the book, it does not give me enough opportunity to really digest new material and that, having finished a chapter, I am then moving on to a new area without feeling as though I have had the chance to consolidate what I have just learned.
The book comes with a 60 minute cassette tape which contains the Twi from all of the dialogue sections from each chapter (each one lasts about 2 minutes), and some of the vocabulary, although seemingly selected at random. There is no polite way of saying it, the quality of the recording is absolutely dreadful. There is an enormous amount of background "hiss" on the tape and the speakers are either too quiet or too muffled to be heard with real clarity. To simulate the experience, you should put your head next to a roaring air conditioner and then try to listen in on a quiet conversation on the other side of the room.
It is easier to follow the tape when played through headphones at full volume. As you do begin to get more accustomed to the poor sound quality, it is helpful that a number of male and female speakers were used to make the recording, so you are not in danger of copying any one individual's particular speech traits. But, when you are beginning to learn a language, and particularly a tone language, you need to hear it spoken slowly first of all, with the words broken down into their component parts and repeated, before you hear the same passage at conversational speed. Aside from the quality of the recording, with Comprehensive Course you get it once and quickly. Most of the vocabulary lists and other exercises are not covered on the tape. None of the English is recorded either so, at least until you are familiar with a particular dialogue, you have to have the book in front of you when listening to the tape.
Although this is intended to be a beginner's course for non-Twi speakers, it is not a good source for an absolute beginner, especially given the limitations of the accompanying recording. If you are determined to learn Twi, this is well worth buying because there is a lot of very good teaching here, but I think you will get much more out of Comprehensive Course if you start off with something else to begin to get the hang of Twi pronunciation, and then use this course in conjunction with some of the other materials that are available. I didn't start learning Twi with Comprehensive Course (but I do not yet consider myself to be an accomplished speaker) and this is definitely a case where a little bit of knowledge goes a long way.

Best book ever written for the TOEFL test.......2005-04-09
This book is definitely the best book for the preparation for the TOEFL test in the market. That's why most (if not all!) the colleges in the US teach from this book in the TOEFL classes. I personally have used this book for preparation for the test. Before reading the tips and doing the sample TOEFL exams in the book, I barely could get more than 200(out of 300) on the sample TOEFL tests, however, after reading this book for only 3 weeks I earned a sweet 274(out of 300) in the TOEFL computer based.
(BTW, I have a brand NEW version of this book for selling. You can reach me at pmrazavi@gmail.com)
Good Structure and Reading, not so good Listening.......2004-12-13
This book is good in Structure and Reading. In Listening strategies are well explained, but the tests in CD are not. People speak very clearly, and in real exam they don't. So, practice this part with Powerprep software (downloadlable from toefl.com) and you'll see the difference. However, this book helped me a lot to prepare the exam in 50 hours and got a score of 217/270.
Simply the WORST !!!.......2004-07-28
Such a waste of money! This book sucks! There are so many mistakes in it that I sometimes think that Deborah Phillips had barely graduated from high school. The strategies given in the book explain only the tip of the iceberg, they are all common sense. They explain only the basics, which are not enough to get a good TOEFL score. I don't usually write reviews, but for this one - it was a must. In case I didn't make it clear -
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK !
The best book for TOEFL test........2004-03-07
The best book for TOEFL test. Software is very well organized. It is possible to analyze statistics of your mistakes and to find out the grammar problems that should be revised.
For preparation for TOEFL test I used three books: Longman, Cambridge and Thomson. Longman is the best book. Cambridge is very good too, but not as good as Longman. Thomson is very bad.
I scored 267 on computer based test.
Lots of mistakes in software and book itself.......2004-02-26
I would not recommend buying the book
there is tons of mistakes in actual text and the software is extremely buggy.
horrible waste of $66 dollars!

A GREAT help in my Multi-Level Classroom.......2002-09-23
I have never seen the older editions mentioned by other reviewers, so I was not at all disappointed with this one. I have about 3 or 4 groups going at once in my adult classroom (NOT MY IDEA). My principle text for my level 1 group is Side-by-Side One. The students buy the Side-by-Side text and Workbook. I keep a class set of Grammar-in-Action in the room, so the students do the exercises on their own paper. After I introduce a chapter in Side-by-Side, I can easily find a chapter in Grammar-in-Action-One that reinforces the vocabulary or grammar topic of choice; the table of contents helps me quickly find a topic. But what I love most about the book is the variety of exercises that my students can work on while I am busy with my other groups. The exercises cover listening (GET THE TAPES, they are great and really help in a multi-level class), speaking (terrific pair exercises: interviews and info-gaps), and plenty of writing (truly reinforces the grammar and vocab). There's just a little bit of reading, but I like using the True Stories series for reading practice, anyway. The exercises in this book teach! Of course, I go over the exercises beforehand and after, but the students really enjoy helping each other and working together. The students who apply themselves really learn a lot, and with relatively little effort on my part.
Trusted old friend is gone.......2000-04-05
I must agree with another reviewer in that I am very disappointed with the 'NEW' Grammar in Action. The wonderful simplicity of the series which made it unique is gone. It appears that in an attempt to hve the book mesh with their other titles, the publisher wanted make it look like every other textbook. And that is what they have done. My trusted old friend of a beginner ESL/EFL book is gone.
I am disappointed.......2000-03-08
I have used the orginal Grammar in Action books, and I am very disappointed in this one. The wonderful, clear simple pictures are missing and have been replaced with tiny crowded ones, or worse, no pictures at all!
excellent grammar supplement for high school learners.......1999-05-15
We found this book to be an excellent compliment to Heinle and Heinle's Voices in Literature and Making Connections. We are using book 1 and book 2 to review grammar and focus on problem areas such as prepositions and personal pronouns. I would recommend these two volumes as supplementary text for use at the high school level for any teacher who feels that students need more focused and concentrated practice in English grammar. Ferdinand De Saussure = Father Of The Modern Sausage.......2005-11-23
Ferdinand De Saussure was well known as the father of modern literary structuralism, but he was also an avid lover of the modern sausage! De Saussure, "the sausage" (as his good friends called him) was a fun loving linguist.
The Essential De Saussure ..........2005-11-08
The thirties of the last century cradled the birth and growth of structuralist Linguistcs in many horizons like phonology ,grammar , etc ... and if we were about to ask who embraced that stream , we would - undebatably - find the name of Ferdinand De Saussure.
This fine book of his explained his structural approach to language and established a series of theoretical distinctions that have become basic to the study of linguistics.
Saussure made a differentiation between the (actual speech) or what we call a spoken language ,and the knowledge underlying speech that speakers share about (what is) grammatical.
For Saussure speech represents instances of grammar and the mission of the linguist is to find the underlying rules of a particular language from examples found in speech.
this is different than the descriptivist's p.o.v ,since the structuralist sees grammar as a set of relationships that account for speech ,rather than a set of instances of speech.
Once you grasp the main concepts of this oeuvre you can go further by reading Bloomfield's works on Structuralism.
The central concepts of linguistics.......2005-07-13
This book comprised from lecture notes of Saussure to his students in Geneva (compiled posthumously by his students) is a work which changed the course of lingustics since its publication. In this book he makes distinctions which have later become central to discussions of linguistics like:
1. Sign as the unity of signifier (letters, sounds, image) and signified (meaning implied by the signifier)
2. Language (langage) as the unity of langue (code - language as a system) and parole (usage)
3. Syncrhonic (language as static system) and diachronic lingustics (langauge as an ever changing, evolving system)
4. Retrospective (language evolution so far) and prospective linguistics (future evolution of a language).
Many linguists have added a cloud of debate over these concepts, but non explains as lucidly as the master who propounded these. For those confused bout semiotics, semiology etc., this work is a reference point for the original meaning of the term 'semiology' as intended by Saussure. Many of Saussure's binary distinctions became the central to an approach to social sciences called structuralism which still holds sway in social sciences.
A must for any English Major!!!.......2005-02-13
If you need to know the foundation of structuralism then you need to read this book. This is where it all begins and the translation of this edition flows well and is perfect for the beginner and novice alike.
One problem with this translation that potential readers should be aware of: If you are reading this to get a better understanding of the terms used by structuralists (signifier and signified) then you need to get the other version. This edition uses the words signification and signal.
Although the rest of text is fine, the exclusion of signifier and signified is, I believe, the only major drawback to the book since these were the terms adopted by structuralist and post-structuralist.
The Foundation of Structuralism and Post-Structuralism.......2003-04-14
Saussure is important as a linguist (although many of his theories have since been put out to pasture) ... but he is most important for his contributions to the theory of Structuralism (and, later, Poststructuralism). His idea that you could not study language as individual units, but rather had to examine it as a structure and study how the units interacted within the structure, was enormously influential in modern and postmodern philosophy.
This book is not particularly difficult; it's a bit dry, but what can you expect from a linguistics class? If you read it carefully, you'll have no problem grasping what he is saying... and, when you are done, you will be well on your way to understanding what people like Lacan, Derrida and Foucault are trying to say. (You'll also be well along your way to understanding Claude Levi-Strauss, who attempted to do for anthropology what Saussure did for linguistics). If you want to understand modern philosophy, Saussure is as indispensible as Marx or Freud. Combine this with *Saussure for Beginners* and you'll pick up Saussure's train of thought in no time.
